Thank you for your reply. I have downloaded and read the Setup Guide and
followed the "Multi-user install". However trivial it may be, each user must
still go through a 4 step license agreement and registration process. It is
minor to you and I but not to a new or relatively new computer user. I, as the
administrator, have already gone through this process and made these decisions
for my users. They should not have to go through it again. Of even greater
importance is the fact that the Configuration Options are reset back to the
default for each user. Is there a way to get the Configuration Options to
remain the same for each user?

Thank you.

A little better explanation of my last post. I have TWO printers attached to
my network. One is a HP LaserJet 4si the other is a Brother MFC 5440cn.
Neither printer is connected to a computer.

As this is a new install in took me some time to get around to setting up
printing. I set the HP up some time before the Brother because drivers are
included in the distro (Debian testing) for the HP. I printed a test page
and everything seamed fine.

Some days later, after downloading the drivers from Brother I set that one up.
I was not surprised when it wouldn't print because I have had problems with
it before (buggy version of cups). Part of the drivers are converted to 64
and part are not.

I was doing some experimenting, saving the OOo on another box and trying to
print it from there to see if the file was corrupted. On a wim I sent it to
the non working Brother and it printed. Both the native OOo and the exported
pdf will print.

So what I thought was an OOo problem has turned out to be something much more
bizzar. I am not sure where the problem is. Any Ideas?

Thanks

I am using version 2.2 OpenOffice.org.

No matter what document I open it will not print out in automatic black. The

black cartridges.

So far this problem happens in writer and calc. Please help me resolve this.

It is anything to do with the details in Tools, Options, User Data

I'm a (very) new user of Open Office; I downloaded 2.2 in order to read .wps

use it to open the files. When I 'insert file' I get directed to the choice of
filters, but when I try to use the filter WPS 2000 I get a 'General Error'
message. There is no filter for MS Works. Any helpful suggestions?

Open Office version 2.2.0

When entering text into a cell, the first letter is always
capitalized. This did not happen in the previous version. When
keeping a list of passwords that are case sensitive this is a
nusiance. Is this anomaly by design or happenstance?

Every time I change a cell and proceed to next change, Calc refreshes

As you stated that the problem also exists when you attempt to print from other
programs ("from the Internet"), this is a problem with your printer or printer
driver, and nothing to do directly with OpenOffice at all.

You may need to reinstall or reconfigure your printer driver, or perhaps your
printer has a hardware problem, which can range from something as simple as a
loose printer cable to more serious issues.

The word processing portion of OpenOffice is called "Writer".

It should all be there as OpenOffice is a monolithic program that includes
everything in the download.

Free can mean one of two things:
 * Libre:
 * Gratis;

 1: Libre

The Free Software Foundation has defined "Libre Software"
as that which meets the Four Freedoms.
 * The freedom to run the program, for any purpose (freedom 0).
 * The freedom to study how the program works, and adapt it
to your needs (freedom 1). Access to the source code is a
precondition for this.
 * The freedom to redistribute copies so you can help your
neighbour (freedom 2).
 * The freedom to improve the program, and release your
improvements to the public, so that the whole community
benefits (freedom 3). Access to the source code is a
precondition for this.

Debian-Legal, to determine whether or not software meets
_The Debian Free Software Guidelines_, has devised the
following tests:

 * "The Desert Island Test". Imagine a castaway on a desert
island with a solar-powered computer with an Internet
connection that can't upload. This would make it impossible
to fulfil any requirement to make changes publicly available
or to send patches to some particular place. This holds even
if such requirements are only upon request, as the castaway
might be able to receive messages but be unable to send
them. To be free, software must be modifiable by this
unfortunate castaway, who must also be able to legally share
modifications with friends on the island.

 * "The Dissident Test". Consider a dissident in a
totalitarian state who wishes to share a modified bit of
software with fellow dissidents, but does not wish to reveal
the identity of the modifier, or directly reveal the
modifications themselves, or even possession of the program,
to the government. Any requirement for sending source
modifications to anyone other than the recipient of the
modified binary in fact, any forced distribution at all,
beyond giving source to those who receive a copy of the
binary would put the dissident in danger. For Debian to
consider software Free it must not require any such excess
distribution.

 * "The Tentacles of Evil Test". Imagine that the author is
hired by a large evil corporation and, now in their thrall,
attempts to do the worst to the users of the program: to
make their lives miserable, to make them stop using the
program, to expose them to legal liability, to make the
program non-free, to discover their secrets, etc. The same
can happen to a corporation bought out by a larger
corporation bent on destroying free software in order to
maintain its monopoly and extend its evil empire. The
license cannot allow even the author to take away the
required freedoms.

Some people who work with content have added the following
test:
 * DRM Dave's Hardware Platform:
Can Bob & Alice upload non-DRM content?
Can Bob & Alice download non-DRM content?
Can Bob & Alice download DRM content?
Can Bob & Alice upload third party DRM content?
Can Bob & Alice download third party non-DRM content?
Can Bob & Alice play first party non-DRM content?
Can Bob & Alice play third party non-DRM content?
Can Bob & Alice play third party DRM content?

If all of those conditions are met, then it is Libre.

 2: Gratis

Whilst software that is Libre can be distributed Gratis,
there is no requirement to do so. A major issue with FLOSS
is the creation of a viable revenue stream through product
sales. The person you sell FLOSS to, can turn around and
burn a million CDs, either selling them for whatever price
they so desire, or just giving them away.

OOo is distributed under the GNU LESSER GENERAL PUBLIC
LICENSE Version 2.1, February 1999.
As such, it meets the requirement of Libre.

You can download OOo from
http://download.openoffice.org/index.html.
* There are vendors who will charge for downloading the
program from their website;
* There are vendors who will charge for the CD or DVD;
* There are vendors who will charge a per seat license fee;

How much you pay has no bearing on the amount, or type of
support you receive. I've seen CD vendors charge $0.99 and
provide one hour telephone support. I've seen CD vendors
charge $500.00 and provide no support at all.

TANSTAAFL: There is the implication with FLOSS that one will
support the community. The Debian Social Contract is the
best known of the formally defined "contracts".

Hello Ricardo,

The actual stable version of OpenOffice.org is 2.2.1. 2.3 is still in
development, but the one I have (with X11) functions quite good.

You don't say whether you installed the OOo version that uses the X11
windowing program, or the -experimental- Aqua version. Where did you
go for the download (Good-day?), did the installation run smoothly,
what kind of Mac do you have (Intel or PPC).
See http://porting.openoffice.org for FAQ and How-To's

Success!

[users] How to activate spell check

2007-08-21 Thread Deena van Niekerk

Good morning.

I started using Open Office 1.1.4 (on Window XP). I then upgraded to
Open Office 2.2.1 and suddenly the spell facility was lost. I tried
re-loading it, but to no avail, yet when loading onto another computer
there was no problem. I have since upgraded to Open Office 2.2.2 and
still no spell check facility.

Please advise me as to what I should do. I am running other programs -
could they be interfering?

A friend loaded the program onto his computer off the same download and
he has spell check available.

Could it be because I have South African English activated?

Hello Deena,

I think we have to look in the direction of your last suggestion.
The default language choice is made at Tools > Options > Language
Settings > Language under Western. Your choice should have the check
sign (V) and ABC.
If you go to Format > Character > Lettertype, what do you have in the
Language window? The name oif the language you have ther eshould be
preceded by a check sign (V) and ABC. This means that the
corresponding word list is installed. Maybe the new version of
OpenOffice.org has US English as default, and you use SA English?
Also check the styles and templates you use for the language selection.

If the dictionary for your language choice is missing, you can install
it again through Fila > Wizard/Assistant > Install new dictionary from
the web (or from your hard disk).

[users] XP Home multi user problems

I am running an XP Home system with an admin user, and a number of
limited users set up. The problem I am having is that if the admin user
creates and edits, for example, an excel file, then saves it into a

You would expect this to happen - wouldn't you? - if you use the
Format Paintbrush to copy formatting from one part of a document to
another. When you copy the formatting of a piece of text, all
aspects of formatting are included.

But this doesn't happen if you copy just the character format. To do
this, create a character style with the appropriate qualities (or use
an existing one) and then use Fill Format Mode from the Styles and
Formatting window. Use Format | Styles and Formatting, or F11, or
the button at the left of the Formatting toolbar to open the Styles
and Formatting window, select the Character Styles button, select the
required character style, and then select the Fill Format Mode
button. This appears to paint just the character style.

I trust this helps.

First of all, why would you want to use the Admin user for working on
files? That should be done only as a limited user. Most likely, any files
created as the admin user will have its permissions set so that only the
admin user can change them. That is the purpose of the admin user in the
first place.
Suggestion: stop using the admin user for anything other than modifying
system files when necessary.

Re: [users] Using CTL

2007-08-21 Thread ccornell - OpenOffice.org

I am using OpenOffice v2.04 for Linux, and am very new with it.

Most of what I want to use it for will be in English, but occasionally I need
to write a document in Hebrew; I have Hebrew set up as the CTL language. I am
using the fonts that came with openSuSE v10.2; i am assuming that these are
Unicode fonts, and that they support a Hebrew character set, but I have no real
basis for believing this. "Enabled for complex text layout" is checked, but is
greyed out, which looks suspicious to me.

In Tools > Options > LanguageSettings > Languages I see no way to toggle
explicitly between Western and CTL languages. Simply setting alignment to the
Right margin does not switch to CTL, but I didn't really expect it to do so.

What have I overlooked? Or what have the writers of the documentation failed to
make sufficiently explicit to penetrate my consciousness?

Hi Stan. I've looked into this a little. In the regular OpenOffice.org
2.2.1 release the CTL checkbox is working (ie not greyed out) and I can
select a language for CTL.

I am guessing you are using the Novell build of OpenOffice.org that came
with openSUSE 10.2. Have you asked this question on the openSUSE
mailing list yet?

You could try adding in the OpenOffice.org repositories and installing
the latest Novell build (which will bring you up to 2.2.1).

http://en.opensuse.org/Additional_YaST_Package_Repositories#OpenOffice.org_STABLE
This may fix your problem.

Re: [users] Re: Question: Download the OpenOffice Writer only?

2007-08-21 Thread ccornell - OpenOffice.org

VERY confusing - especially for someone new to computers or at least to
non-Microsoft programmes ! A real reorganisation is called for here

Yes, and reorganization is in the works.

Consider the Wiki FAQ as leading. The WebFAQs which are incredibly old
in places (some refer to solutions for StarOffice v5.1 for example) are
no longer current. If you to http://documentation.openoffice.org/ and
click the FAQ link it will take you to the Wiki (currently to a Wiki
redirect page... I will request that to be fixed). The main page FAQ
(and other) links should also be redirected to the Wiki FAQ.

Hang in there... a lot is being done to open things up so that the
community can help keep it up to date - such as moving things like the
FAQs over to the Wiki. There is a lot to do, but we're getting there. :-)

Use Google and search using FTP.

Hello Aderet,

Here you'll find almost all you may want to know (and some...)
Wikipedia on File Transfer protocol:

I'd choose a free ftp program (GPL licence).

So in answer to your question as to how I normally publish my webpages

First, OpenOffice.org is free (as in free source and no cost when
downloaded) so you should not have had to buy it, unless don't normally
have access to the web and so had to obtain a CD with OpenOffice.org on
it. But since you "searched the internet", that does not seem to be the
case. You can download the newest version of OpenOffice.org at
http://download.openoffice.org/2.2.1/index.html

You don't need Frontpage to publish ANY web pages, unless the person you
use to publish your pages is too ignorant to use anything else. All you
need are files in some form of HTML which you place on a web server with
a URL. It is that simple. There are a number of companies offering free
web space such a Geocities and Google Page Creator along with many others.

While you can use the HTML facilities in OpenOffice.org (or the HTML
facilities in MS Word for that matter) the HTML used in either is not
very good. OpenOffice.org HTML is only a subset of HTML-3 with no
cascading style-sheets while MS Windows HTML is loaded with bulky
comments intended to allow everything to retained when loaded back into
Word, but these comments are useless for web publishing.

However if you do want to use OpenOffice.org as an HTML editor, then
open OpenOffice.org Writer and select File -> New -> HTML document. You
can create your web in here just as you would a word processing document
and save it in ".HTML" format. Use the View menu to turn HTML Source
view on or off and edit in either mode. That HTML file should be
suitable for web publishing if you are not at all fussing about recent
advances in HTML, XHTML, and XML>

But as already mentioned, you can also use NVU (at
http://www.nvu.com/index.php ) to produce web pages instead. NVU is a
dedicated web page editor and producer and so, in my opinion, better
than OpenOffice.org for this.

If you are using Windows, a more powerful free (as in no-cost) HTML/XML
editor is Microsoft Visual Web Developer at
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/express/aa974185.aspx and
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/express/aa700797.aspx I've used this to
develop a professional corporate website.

Another excellent free (as in no cost) product is Matrix Y2K Website
Studio at http://www.crystalfibers.com/index.php?topicid=146 I haven't
used much at all much as I'd already gotten used to NVU and Miscrosoft
Visual Web Developer but it seems to be very good.

Don't let anyone talk you into buying any Website creation product
unless you know that product has a feature you really need. There's
sufficient free material on the web for most web page creation. Why does
someone claim you now NEED FrontPage 2003?

The only thing probably worth buying is a good book on HTML for reference.

Under the OpenOffice.org license, it is legal for anyone to sell
OpenOffice.org for a price. Some suppliers to so on a CD as a benefit
for those who don't have adequate web facilities to download
OpenOffice.org or they bundle it with other free software. Similarly it
sometimes appears on a CD with a computer magazine.

However this site seems like a scam, providing no extra value or no

If A, B, and C seem OK now, they probably are. If there is any
information missing from a file after a restore, it is normally only the
information most recently entered but not yet saved or not yet stored
for autorecovery.

You can also check Tools -> Options... -> Load/Save -> General and see
if "Always create backup copy is checked". If it is, then you should
find your most recent backup copies in whatever Backups file path is
listed in Tools -> Options... -> OpenOffice.org -> Paths. You can copy
these to another folder, rename them, and then check them against your
current copies.

(Note, this is usually an invisible folder in Windows, so you may have
to use Tools -> Folder Options ... in a MS Windows folder option to make
it visible if you have not already set invisible folders as visible.)

If "Always create backup copy is checked" is not checked, I advise
checking it now for future needs.

The backups directory also contains BAK files which you can often rename
to to .odt or .ods or so forth and they will then show at least part of
the document in proper format. (These files are created as part of
AutoRecovery information concerning and usually don't contain the entire
text of a document, unless you have changed everything.) Make sure that
the "Save AutoRecovery information every [__] minutes" is checked with a
reasonable amount, say 15 minutes, in the minutes box.)

Dan

Im not, its just the way the person ive set the system up for wants it.
Some of the documents had been created historically anyway, when the
system was running as an admin only default windows install.

Im not sure that the purpose of the admin user is specifically to create
files that cant be edited by limited users?

Are you saying that there is no way for a file saved by an admin, even
if saved to a shared directory, to be fully accessed by a limited user?
Is this a feature of windows or openoffice?

Thank you for your suggestions, which I will investigate. You are correct -- I
am using the OOo that came with openSuSE 10.2.

Curiously, although the CTL checkbox is greyed out, it is also checked, so that
it is difficult to interpret what being greyed out means.

But now i have discovered that the problem seems not to be confined to OOo at
all: In visiting an Israeli online telephone directory, I have found that I am
unable to write Hebrew into the entry fields. This means to me that it is
system-wide in the OS. Another user has pointed me to the need of installing
"language packs" for each of the languages I am apt to use -- clumsy, but not
unusual. I'll get to that in the next few days. I would not be surprised if it
fixes the original problem as well. It may even un-grey the CTL checkbox.

But I noticed a problem when I downloaded a file from Income tax department & I
was not able to work.

This year on wards Income tax department, Govt of India has started e-filing of
Income tax returns of the assessee. They have prepared a software for the
benefit of the assessee. Each assessee who wish to file under e-filing has to
download this software - which works in M.S.Excel & Acrobat Reader 8.1 versions

Now I downloaded this software from http://incometaxindiaefiling.gov.in/ web
site. It works in excel. But I was not able to open the same in open office org
calc. The system is hanging & Intel Active Monitor starts blinking because the
Processor Zone heat increases above the tolerance limit. I was no other option
than closing the system by using control+alt+del keys.

I have not attached the file as the file size is more than 23 MB you can down
load this from the above mentioned website (please down load ITR-4).

I request you to find is there any BUGS in the software developers by the

The native version of OOo does not currently have a filter for opening these
types of files. There will be in the future, but not at the moment.

Some other flavours of OOo offered by other vendors (eg, Novell), I believe
do have that functionality.

The native version of OOo (from www.openoffice.org) does not natively
support the new Office 2007 file formats. It will, undoubtedly, in the
future but not currently.

There are some flavours of OOo that do support the new format (eg, Novell

[users] Saving network-loaded images inside a document locally

2007-08-21 Thread Ioannis Vranos

OpenOffice.Org 2.0

Hi, I have pasted some text and images in an ODT from the browser and
saved it. When I open the document the images get loaded from the
Internet. How can I make them to be saved (embedded) in the document
locally, rather than having them loading from the Net each time?

Thanks,

Hi John,
Open the file and select 'edit / links'. Select all of the items in the list,
then click 'break links'. Save the file.

[users] Strange font encoding problem

2007-08-21 Thread Derek Croxton
I'm having a strange and very frustrating problem with font encoding in
OOo on Ubuntu Feisty. For some reason, certain fonts are rendering some
special characters wrong -- for instance, Times New Roman is rendering
a-umlaut as a special percent symbol. I opened a document I had been
using yesterday, and all a-umlaut characters were wrong. I can fix it
by changing fonts, but I really don't want to have to change the font on
 all my documents.

I have been trying all kinds of things to narrow down the problem. The
incorrect characters show up the wrong way in the Insert->Special
character table, and they are wrong at least in Writer and Calc.
However, the problematic fonts work fine in other applications, which is
why I think the problem must lie with OOo and not Ubuntu. I tried
re-installing all OOo packages, which actually fixed some problems, but
not all of them.

This seems like such a crazy problem, happening overnight the way it
did, for no apparent reason. I'm willing to try compiling OOo from
source if I have to, although I'd rather avoid it if possible. I'm
guessing there must be some component that is causing this issue, so if
someone could help me identify that component, perhaps I could just
download that particular shared library or whatever it is.

Thanks for any help.

Sincerely,
Derek

I'm not entirely sure of the situation regarding Windows, but in Unix/Linux
environments there is a command called "umask" that sets the default file
creation permissions for a user.

Perhaps there is something similar for Windows as well.

You might try a commercial package to help you manage this:

http://openofficetechnology.com/

I believe that some folks have written scripts to push a common profile
out to their network users. This is pretty easy in linux, but with
Windows I think that you'd have to deal with Windows registry etc.

The real answer to your question is that it depends on what's blocking it.

You could try compressing the file using zip or similar, or perhaps even just
renaming it (changing the file extension) and see what happens.

Check your fonts by opening Nautilus and typing this into the location bar:

fonts:

Don't forget the colon. Hit return and wait a moment.

Click on the problem font in the list shown and see what happens.

Instead of NVU, which is quite buggy, download Kompozer at
http://kompozer.sourceforge.net.

Kompozer is the unofficial much needed bug fix for NVU.

Also, most ISPs nowadays have wysiwyg HTML editors available through
their control panel.

Good luck - and don't forget to google HTML tutorials - there are tons
of good ones out there.

that little phrase "which you place" is what I can't make happen yet.
Hopefully with the ideas presented here, I can move my HTML pages to

The file mentioned in that bug report is the same file. As you'll see,
the file can be opened, it just takes a long time.

Further, since 2005 the government of India has been distributing
millions of OOo CD's:

The government of India is distributing millions of CDs with OOo in
local languages. 3,500,000 in Tamil, 3,500,000 in Hindi distributed in
2005. Other languages are coming: "The next stage of the project is to
distribute CDs containing applications in Punjabi, a popular Indian
language. This launch is due to happen in August and as Punjabi is also
spoken in Pakistan, the project hopes to hold launch events in both
countries."

This is a Windows issue and it is a permissions issue as Frank has
suggested. Just putting a file in a shared directory does not make
it accessable if you have not changed the permissions. The
permission in this case are probably set to allow only the
owner/author to access the files. In this case it is the admin. I
have never messed with XP home so I don't know how it is set up. I
do set up 2000 Pro, XP Pro for POS at work but, I am strictly Linux
at Home. I do not currently have access to Windows, I will at work.

Careful now. Unless you have some proof, they *could* come after you for
libel. They *do* offer a CD for $16.90.

I've no idea who they are (their domain registration is hidden behind
oneandone's private registration), but I'd be a bit more careful about
stating that a site is a scam unless you have some solid proof or

I can open all my openoffice.org files except for the one I now use
most frequently. Do you know why? It is in openoffice.calc. I really
NEED to recover this fle. Can you help? I am sending you the file FYI.

The file loaded fine for me (though it took longer than usual to open).

As Joe said, perhaps your problem has to do with the external files the
spreadsheet is trying to access.
