I use Microsoft Office Document Imaging to scan it onto my computer and it
saves as a .tif file. Is this possible to open with open office (all 5
pages) and convert it to a pdf?

I have not been able to open multiple page tif files in OpenOffice,
only single page tifs. So it would seem the answer is no.

You could however install PDFCreator and then use Microsoft Office
Document Imaging to print to the PDFCreator printer. Doing so would
create the PDF file. PDFCreator is free and open source and can be
found here...

You misread the requirements. They stated Windows Vista (enhanced Vista
integration from version 2.2). That means OO.o version 2.2 and newer
have enhanced Vista integration. OO.o is currently version 2.3.1 (2.4
due shortly, 2.4 RC6 is out).

2008-03-23 Thread Roland GARCIN
--- TRANSLATE PAR GOOGLE -

Good evening.
I started OOO downloaded on your site via eorezo. I did not at all
appreciate their own way of doing things.
First, personal information is requested in order to begin the download.
Then software is installed without our knowledge. I quickly put an end to
the installation by uninstalling software eorezo and third. I went on
OpenOffice.Org order to download OOO, what I have done, as I do usually. I
am now scalded by Framasoft and I do not go back.
It is regretable that such practices will do in the world of freedom. This
is not conducive to this result and all the work that has been done
upstream. I think we should remove the possibility given to eorezo to have a
link on the site Framasoft.
Sincerely yours.
Roland Garcin.

PS : Email tranmis also Framasoft.

Bonsoir.

Roland Garcin.

can do this with the PDF icon on the tool bar or by clicking on File

Hi

I downloaded Writer in Brazilian Portuguese in order to have word processing
that recognises their accents. My other computer which I bought in Brazil
has MS Word and it recognises their accents and auto corrects using them.

When I type in Writer it recognises none of them and when you right click it

as Portuguese. This is a cat chasing its own tail because without the accent
you can't add the word to the dictionary and am I supposed to add all their

a) Install the appropriate dictionaries, thesauri, and hyphenation dictionaries.
File Wizards Install new dictionaries should bring up the tool
for installing dictionaries.
* This tool will automatically check to see if it is the most current
version. If it is not, then it will ask if you want to update to the
current version.
* The user interface for version 1.7 is in 27 languages;
* It lists roughly 120 dictionaries for spell checking;
** There are some ---probably less than a dozen --- dictionaries for
OOo that are not listed in this tool. For the most part, the unlisted
dictionaries are very new, very specialized, or very large.
* Only install dictionaries etc that you use, and need. OOo
performance can be severely degraded if too many dictionaries, etc are
installed. [My experience is that performance degradation is
noticeable at around 5 dictionaries, and is complete at around 100
dictionaries. The amount of RAM, and your chip speed will affect the
performance degradation.]

b) Create and use language specific styles;
* For each language that is used, create a set of paragraph,
character, numbering, and page styles. Use those styles when creating,
or editing documents. This way spell checking will be correctly done.
Language specific styles also allow for transparent grammar checking
from within OOo.
* A template that contains the start of language specific styles can
be found at http://www.esnips.com/web/OOoRelatedThings.
* Uncheck Spell check in all languages unless you want your work to
contain spelling errors.

Build this and then watch Microsoft squirm ..

Microsoft is squirming, because their oxygen supply is being cut off.

Regardless of what your specific needs are, there is a Linux distro
that is customized for that specific niche, and just works.

Of course, if you object to figuring out what your real needs in a
computer are, this is a disaster area for you.

How can I get it working on OOo?

Oh yes, I have the need for it in version 1.1.3 (it is an embedded

Michelle, it is not clear to me what you are doing. Are you using
Writer or Calc? I will assume writer as you mention Winword.

You would like a table like this, with the numbers being added automatically:

| header | header | more.|
| 1 | .. | .|
| 2 | .. | .|
| 3 | .. | .|
| 4 | .. | .|

Let me know if this is what you mean.

OpenOffice can't read Works files directly. (In fact, per my
understanding, MS Office can't read Works files either.)

One solution is to open up MS Works, open the files that you're
interested in, and then save them as .doc files, which OpenOffice can
read. Then go into OpenOffice, open up the .doc files that you created,
and then export the file as a pdf file (File Export as pdf) from
within OpenOffice.

Use Writer to open your .DOC files. Then you can export to PDF. You
can do this with the PDF icon on the tool bar or by clicking on File

1) You didn't have to purchase OpenOffice. It's a free download from
www.openoffice.org.

2) You'll have to provide more information about your problem. Are
these Word documents you've opened before? Are they the new .DOCX
format? If so, OpenOffice can't open them. Are you getting any error

This error is generated by your Windows operating system, because it
cannot read/open one or more of the files contained in an installer
program. It is not exclusive to OOo (OpenOffice.org).

If you downloaded OOo on to your hard disk drive and you are are trying
to install it from there, check the MD5SUM of the installer file you
downloaded. The details of the MD5SUM and a link to instructions on how
to use it can be found here:

http://download.openoffice.org/2.3.1/md5sums.html
If the MD5SUM is wrong the installer file has been corrupted during the
download and you will need to download again.

If you are trying to install OOo from a CD, check out the possible
solutions suggested by Microsoft when this error occurs during the
installation of their Office program:

You're confusing file formats (ODF) with applications (OpenOffice).
There are many applications that work with ODF files, OpenOffice being
but one of them. There may very well be applications for those devices
that support ODF. For example, there will soon be AbiWord for the Nokia

the desktop version. ODT files are the ODF format for word processing.

Due to resource limitations, mobile applications tend to be light

such as OpenOffice.

I thought Works had the option of saving in .DOC format. If so, you
save in that format and then open with OpenOffice. While some specific
versions of OpenOffice can open Works files, generally it can't.
Another method is to download the free Microsoft viewers for the

have to reset the file associations back to OpenOffice.

[users] MS Office 2007 workaround

2008-03-23 Thread M.J. Grove
I just got an HP iPaq 210, which is listed as running Mobile Office 6.
But it offers to save in the new and dreaded four letter formats,
making it Mobile Office 6.1, the point one denoting Office 2007
compatibility. It also saves in the 2003 MS Office formats, as well as
Rich Text and Plain Text, serving as a translator from 2007 to something
actually readable. A nice little bonus from HP. Microsoft offers a
free download of Mobile Office 6.1 to users of older versions, in case
any of you with a handheld need an Office 2007 workaround.

One issue with the iPaq 210: it came with MS ActiveSync, which is just
TOO active. It wants to sync something, and I don't use Outlook, so it
seems to be having a virtual anxiety attack for lack of an honest job to
do. I've reset it, but, short of disconnecting the iPaq from my
computer, I can't turn it OFF! Does anyone know how to keep it from
popping up like the Energizer Bunny?

OpenOffice can't read Works files directly. (In fact, per my
understanding, MS Office can't read Works files either.)

One solution is to open up MS Works, open the files that you're
interested in, and then save them as .doc files, which OpenOffice
can read. Then go into OpenOffice, open up the .doc files that you
created, and then export the file as a pdf file (File Export as
   pdf) from within OpenOffice.

Another alternative is to download and install one of the PDF

[users] Calc: Reverse Arrays

2008-03-23 Thread Juergen Diel
Dear all,

I'm using OO V. 2.3. I'm experiencing the following:
When entering =SUMMENPRODUKT(A12:A14;A14:A12), [=SUMPRODUCT(A12:A14;A14:A12)]
OOCalc reverses the second term to A12:A14. Obviously, that gives a different
result than I need it. There are workarounds which return a reversed matrix,
but it would be easier if OOCalc wouldn't correct what I'm writing.

Why would you need it? For example the calculation of so called Schröder
numbers requires that you calculate the scalar product of a vector A(0) to A(n)
with the same vector reversed A(n) to A(0).

Is there a way to force OOCalc to observe the order given? Or is it a bug?
And, it seems to be not possible to do a sumproduct of a horizontal and
vertical error. =SUMPRODUCT(A12:A14;A1:C1) returns a #Value error.

Finally, thanks to all contributing to such a nice tool!

Kind regards,

Have you actually installed the software or only downloaded the installer

you haven't installed OpenOffice yet. Run the setup.exeand, after you

Did you actually install it? With Windows, you have to double click on

I know nothing of them or any other vendor. Your mistake
 was going to a

 Also, if
they're charging for 3 years of use, I'd say they're violating
 the
license that OpenOffice is issued under, which prohibits usage
 charges.
The only permissible charges are those for providing you with a

such as a nominal amount for sending a CD etc.

You're confusing file formats (ODF) with applications (OpenOffice).
There are many applications that work with ODF files, OpenOffice being
but one of them. There may very well be applications for those
devices that support ODF. For example, there will soon be AbiWord for
the Nokia N800 N810 Internet Tablet. AbiWord supports ODT files, at
least in the desktop version. ODT files are the ODF format for word
processing.

Due to resource limitations, mobile applications tend to be light
weight, which means they are stripped down, compared to full suites,
such as OpenOffice.
I don't know about you, but besides when I view it on Nokia's website, I
can't actually remember if I have actually seen the two phones you
mentioned above. When I talk about mobile devices, I mean that which the
average Joseph uses. My point is, I for one would like to see
OpenOffice Mobile (if there's going to be one). If mobile applications
such as Quick Office can do the job effectively, I don't see why
OpenOffice can't do the same.

2008-03-23 Thread ~d *{,-) - aka UNITE
Greetings James,

I went to the site you suggested (the one I tried before) and got the same
results. Here is the list of my results after clicking on the download.
http://download.openoffice.org/

http://download.openoffice.org/contribute.html?download=bouncerprod

http://openoffice.bouncer.osuosl.org/download.php

Next, I found a mirror (?) site in Utah and downloaded both the program and
the update. However, when installing, I got a message saying that it
required X11 and that could be had at the Mac download site, so I went
there. When it was downloaded, I tried to open and install it and was
greeted with the information that it couldn't be done because it was already
on the machine.

I'll admit, I'm pretty much at a loss. Ideas are very welcome.

Be well, David

As far as we know it is OpenOffice.

Under the terms of its licence it is legal to sell OpenOffice provided the
other terms of that licence are met, the main other term being that the
source code is made available to those that want it.

Some people sell OpenOffice on CD for just a small amount to cover the cost
of producing the CD plus PP. This frequently provides a useful service to
people with slow/unreliable/expensive internet connections who would have
problems downloading the software. Other people sell enhanced versions and/or
provide training and/or installation support and/or extra goodies like clip art
or templates. Useful? Depends; certainly not an out and out never.

Others are just rip-off merchants relying on the ignorance of the purchaser.
Opal Office? No comment.

Subject: [users] Calc: Reverse Arrays

Dear all,

I'm using OO V. 2.3. I'm experiencing the following:
When entering =SUMMENPRODUKT(A12:A14;A14:A12),
[=SUMPRODUCT(A12:A14;A14:A12)] OOCalc reverses the second term to A12:A14.
Obviously, that gives a different result than I need it. There are
workarounds which return a reversed matrix, but it would be easier if
OOCalc wouldn't correct what I'm writing.

Why would you need it? For example the calculation of so called Schröder
numbers requires that you calculate the scalar product of a vector A(0) to
A(n) with the same vector reversed A(n) to A(0).

[users] Using openoffice.org 2.3.1; trouble opening file

2008-03-23 Thread Tom and Sue
I have downloaded Openoffice.org 2.3.1 on my desktop (running Windows XP), and
on my laptop which is running Windows Vista Premium.
I created a file in Openoffice Calc on my desktop. I saved the file to a memory
stick so that I could work on the file on my laptop.
Initially, all worked well when working between my desktop and laptop.
The problem:
I can open and work on the file on my desktop without problems. If I move the
memory stick to my laptop, I am unable to open the file.
I uninstalled Openoffice from my laptop and reinstalled Openoffice.org
2.3.1--all worked well. Until I opened the file on my desktop. I tried again to
open the file on my laptop; no luck.
Any suggestions???

I have a new mac computer and am trying hard enough to get used to it
after using windows for so many years.

I have tried openoffice and I have decided I do not want it on my
computer anymore. Unlike windows where you can uninstall, Mac's, all
you need to do is drag and drop to trash.

Problem is every time I try to drag and drop it says that all these
little components are in use.

eg. images.zip
droplet.rsrc uriproc.uno.dylib...types.rdb and many
more. This is even after I have quit using application.

Any idea why I can not get rid of openoffice? It's just not for me.

Thank you

Hi James

I got a bit cross and frustrated as I love my Mac! Sorry for my
action. The program would not instal but after a little thought I
worked out that it was the version of X11 I was using. I installed
X11 2.1.1 and all was OK.

But this pops up in a window and and I get an OpenOffice warning that
Apple Event timed out. I click OK in the window and the program
loads. The first thing that opens is the Document Recovery window
below. I click 'Start Recovery' and the document opens. This is not
a worry for me and I do not need a reply to this email.

Best wishes Colin

It's hard to fix something, when you don't know what the problem is.
