Can you tell use what version you were trying to install? If you can
provide the complete URL (location and complete name of the install file)
this would help. And more about your specific Mac platform.

Really, it would also be VERY helpful if you could file an "issue" on this
through BugZilla, the bug reporting system.

The link for this is:

https://issues.apache.org/ooo/enter_bug.cgi

You will need to register for an account first, however. Once you do this,
please choose the "installation" category, choose the version you were
trying to install (otherwise just leave the default), change the platform
to Mac, then fill out the rest and submit.

Can this be done and if yes, how?

It was easy with XP.

Go into the Control Panel and look for "Default Programs". You can use
that to set the default application for various file types.

It should. However, you may have to emulate XP. Give it a try and see

Bcc Mick personally as well.

OpenOffice.org is designed to work only with laptops, towers, and
desktops; but I can not be for sure about an iPad. Safari will download
programs, but it does not install them. Were you able to download the
DMG file for OOo, is this what you were not able to do?
I have a MacBook, so I am acquainted with Safari and installing on
the Mac O/S in MacBook.

Unless you needed a CD, there's no need to buy OpenOffice. It's a

You don't need to purchase OpenOffice - it is available for free. Have a
look at http://fr.openoffice.org/ - I think the version downloaded from

Hi Verna,

I do not see how as the list is build on the go from a database, thus it
would change based on the requirements. If you have addresses that you

Yes, or better there was.
It was called StarOffice while it was still Sun, Oracle later renamed it
to Oracle Open Office. But since the time Oracle donated OOo to Apache,
the commercial version was cancelled and doesn't exist any longer.

Does the computer that OOo installed on still have the directory that
was created when it was installed? If so copy the whole directory to a

How large is the downloaded file, and what is its name?

I thought the "Open Office Installation File folder on the Desktop"
contained something like 129MB of files, one of which is
openofficeorg1.cab of 129MB. Do you have that file?

Is there plenty of spare room on the hard drive?

Perhaps if the OP can provide information regarding the AV/AM product

There is NO CASE of a "virus" here and the chances of there being an real
malware are
extremely low.

What you provided is NOT good advice.

The anti malware solution that is declaring the trojan "Gen:Variant.Kazy.7792"
(which is
NOT a virus declaration) has to be identified.

The specific file(s) being declared to be containg the trojan
"Gen:Variant.Kazy.7792" need
to be identified.

The declaration needs to be verified. I am well able to do that.

If the presumption of a False Positive is true, the un-identified anti malware
solution
needs to be contacted to negate the False Positive declaration. I am well able
to do that
well.

Good evening Rita !

I haven't by now any answer about the existence of virus in the official
site of Oo.

Anyway, this matter will be good experience especially to you and to others
so that to present good advice to the future users of Oo.

concerning to finding a solution to your problem with the virus, I propose
that you do the following stapes :

1- cut all files of Oo which include the virus from your computer.

2- Then past them in a USB.

3- Pass your antivirus to define the file of the virus.

4- Let the antivirus delete it.

5- If it will come back, delete it manually.

6- If it will come back again, delete all files of Oo.

7- Download another copy of Oo from another site.

8- When you cut all files of Oo from the disk, and so as to be sure that no
copy of the virus exists on your disk, write the name of

the virus file in the "START". If it is found, you will see it. In this
case, click on it and cut it. Then, past it in the USB.

If it is not found, that will be a good step to delete it totally.

9- It seems to me that your antivirus isn't so strong. To don't delete all
files of Oo, I propose to you to change the antivirus.

Rita... Have happy night! beautiful life!

Gen:Variant.Kazy.7792 is NOT a virus. The term "virus" is overused an abused.
All
viruses are malware but not all malware are viruses.

A variant of Generic Kazy is a heuristic detection for a trojan and in all
probabilities
is a False Positive declaration by your un-named anti malware solution.

There is NOTHING OpenOffice can do to fix a False Positive declaration by an
un-named anti
malware solution. It is that un-named anti malware solution that has to
correct its
signatutes to negate the False Positive declaration.

I have POCs at many anti malware vendors. To correct this you need to identify
EXACTLY
what files are being detected (or send me copies of said files) and indicate
who is the
vendor of the un-named anti malware solution that declared this False Positive
of
"Gen:Variant.Kazy.7792".

Hello,

I don't know what your native language is, but probably there is a
page at the OOo website in that language where you can find
documentation on how to use OpenOffice.org.
See: http://projects.openoffice.org/native-lang.html
For documentation in general see: http://documentation.openoffice.org/

You sent your request to a list where users of OpenOffice.org try to
help one another. This is no helpline and you won't easily find
somebody here that will help you through the phone.

Success!

2011-04-26 Thread Andrew Fisk
My guess would be that you downloaded the program and never installed it, you
just ran it from the download file (you had a .dmg file that you clicked on and
a disk icon with open office showed you om your desktop). You probably cleaned
out your downloads folder and threw the install file away. Download it again,
and this time drag the open office icon to the application folder then you can
throw out the installer.

Hi Karen,

it is not necessary to save your current document to another format in
order to get it mailed to some other user. Just use the menu command
File -> Send and then choose the format.

That will work if the OS is correctly set up /and/ the users mailer
supports the operation - some don't.

The format needed will depend on what the recipient can read. If they
have OOo, then send a .ods or whatever; if you don't know what they
have, a pdf is possibly readable by most people (and will also stop all
but the most determined changing the file and its layout).

(My wife had a document sent to her recently - actually an msword
document prepared with Word I believe. MS's Word reader program here
rendered the whole lot as musical symbols; although fortunately OOo came
to the rescue. Strange and unexpected things can happen when exchanging
documents. No, not an April Fool!)

I used Quattro-Pro for many years but had to give that up due to
frequent crashes of key files. The conversion is not a slick 10-second
process but it can be done.

For me the beginning was to Save AS (from Quattro-Pro) in Excel (.xls)
format. (I believe it was Microsoft Excel v5/v7 -- the other choice in
my version of QPro is Microsoft Excel 97, which I think is older.)

This can then be imported into OOo Calc and saved in .ods format.

Now the tedious part begins -- converting things that were not exported
well enough by QPro. The biggest challenge I faced was that my macros
didn't transfer to anything useful. I simply had to deal with the issue
involved in some entirely new way.

Good luck. Write again if you have specific questions I might address

That's one possibility, but there are others. My first recommendation is that you uninstall your
current version of OOo, then get and install the most recent one that is supported on your system --
there have been a great many changes over the course of "several years" that complicate the issue of
how to help you. If you do have a corrupted version, that will fix it, and also get you more
current. If you don't have broadband access, there are some CD sources listed on the
www.openoffice.org website (with no guarantees from OOo); in that case, you might try reinstalling
what you have while you wait for a newer version, and see if that helps. Or you could go to a
library or other location that has the access, and download onto a CD or USB drive, then install
from that. Just make sure that you get the right version for your system. The default is to download
the version for the system doing the downloading; you may have to follow the link for "other" to
select the right one for you.

OK -- now for some questions to you. What operating system and version are you using? What is the
extension for the documents you are sending -- .odt, .doc, ...? Are these documents that you are
originating, or are you editing things from somewhere else, and if so, what was the original format?
How are you sending the files -- using File > Send > Document as E-mail, saving the document and
explicitly attaching it to a message, ...? Is OOo Writer the program that tries to open the files
and fails? Do you see any error messages, and if so, what are they?

patna...@telkomsa.net
If 2.4 MB is the file-size in .ods format, it's actually much larger
in working format (.ods files are zipped for storage; their uncompressed
size when in memory can e much greater.) Here are some of the things
I've considered in trying to reduce the size and complexity, and hence
the frequent "bombing":
1. Am I trying to do too many loosely related things in one spreadsheet
file? If so maybe I should use separate spreadsheets for the different
tasks -- a Divide and Conquer strategy. The first step is to use Save
As to create a second version, say for Task B; if there are additional
tasks, say C and D, then repeat the Save As process to create additional
versions of the original. Then, with the last Saved-As version, delete
sheets not needed for that Task. Next reopen the original version,
which will now be used only for Task A, and delete sheets not needed for
Task A. Repeat this process as needed to pare each version down to just
what is needed for the corresponding task.
2. Are there pages (sheets) whose content will never change but which
contain many formulas? If so I convert those sheets to all values via
the following steps. On a page to be converted, press Ctrl+End, then
Shift+Ctrl+Home to select the entire sheet, then Ctrl+C to copy, then
Shift+Ctrl+V to invoke the Paste-Special dialog box. The first time you
do this you would probably need to uncheck the Paste all box; then
uncheck Formulas, Notes and Objects, and check Text, Numbers and Date &
Time; then click OK (or press Enter) to complete the conversion

I hope this helps

You may find these helpful:

Openoffice.org, like any major application is subject to security
vulnerabilities. Howerever, if you download only from the authorized
site: http://www.openoffice.org/ and
 it is highly unlikely that
you will pick up a virus... otherwise there would be 'literally'

Very little chance, especially if you also check the MD-5 checksum I think

| Just a thought, but is there a chance of picking up a virsu from downloading
| OpenOffice?

| Thanks and Regards,

I, and others, assume you mean "virus".

People have gotten into a bad habit and assume all malcious software are
"viruses". The
fact it all viruses are malware but not all malware are viruses.

So the real question should be...
"...is there a chance of picking up malware from downloading OpenOffice?"

The chance is EXTREMELY small IFF you you download it from official
distribution
sites/channels.
If you download OpenOffice from a torrent, a P2P or from Usenet then the
chances of
malware being inserted into the installer is EXTREMLY high.

  Thanks, Ketan!

Sadly, using either of those 2 settings made no difference.
With font size e.g. 12, when hitting the font size option, it still
showed '12' at the top.

(I had 'Select' as default, but even when then hitting 'Clear
Settings', it still showed '12' at the top of the sizes.)

Perhaps I didn't do something right...

The software named OpenOffice.org ("OOo") from www.openoffice.org is
completely free to download, to use and to distribute to others regardless
of context - business, personal, education etc.

Support is also free via the mail list users@openoffice.org to which you
should subscribe (also free). There are also at least two web forums,
details of which you will find in the OpenOffice.org web pages. Support
comes from *users* of the software who volunteer time to help others.

The openoffice.org web pages also incorporate extensive documentation which
you are free to browse and/or download.

Beware. Under the terms of the OOo licence people are allowed to sell the
software. In many cases this is legitimate, for example some people sell the
software on CD at a nominal price as a convenience to those with incompetent
internet connections. However, there are some scammers around who require
non trivial amounts of money and registration and who then point their
customers at the volunteer support "group". Don't pay for OOo unless you
know what you are buying, for example onsite support or additional
functionality and from whom you are buying it.

When you install OOo you will be asked to register. This is purely optional
and is designed to try to keep track of the number of copies in use by
location. There are no passwords involved (the OOo web forums, as most such
forums, require passwords but that's a different story).

Just figured out that the title bar is following the Win7 desktop theme.
If I change the theme to Windows 7 Basic, the title bar is no longer
translucent & looks the same as on WinXP. You might want to test on your

Thanks. On Win7 (I have Win7 Home Premium) 3.2.1 does show
OpenOffice.org when opened to the start menu screen. It also shows the
document file name when a document is opened. However, it seems that the
title bar is a translucent type of background design, so the information
is a little hard to see. Also, if I un-maximize the window & move the
smaller window around, I can see that it's a transparent title bar & can
see the desktop background through it.

Could be that on yours is actually there, but is so transparent that
it's being obscured. Do you get the Minimize, Maximize/Restore, Close
buttons in the right hand corner?

Checking Tools|Options|OpenOffice.org|View I see the theme type is
'Automatic (Galaxy (default)); changing to Crystal, etc., doesn't seem
to affect the title bar appearance. Perhaps someone with Win7 experience
can assist; I use linux & typically only open Win7 for testing & support.

Re: [users] Re: OPEN OFFICE WRITER TEXT BEST FIT

2010-08-02 Thread Jean Lear
Sorry to have not followed up on this matter to the members who tried
to assist.
At present I am trying to overcome a problem in that Windows 7 that I
have to change to on
a replacement computer is not accepting Open Office. At present it
has been narrowed down
to the copy of Windows 7 on the computer I am changing to. My Open
Office files are as they
should be on other computers with Windows 7 but are opening without
file names in the title bar
on the Windows 7 I have. People with more knowledge than I have are
trying to sort this out.
Please do not reply to this as it will be hijacking the original thread.
I will start this thread again when the Windows 7 problem is sorted out.
Thank you for the help so far.

Please bottom post on this list; meaning in gmail just move your cursor
to the bottom of this and then reply - thanks :-)

I'm not sure, but I _think_ you may be able to do this by using a frame
where the member name is inserted.

I know you can autosize the frame to the object, but do not know if you
can autosize the object/text to the frame in Writer (you can do this in
Impress).

If you can send the basic .odt template then I/we can experiment with
the mailmerge name section & possibly provide you with a solution. The
list will accept small .odt's, or you can send it to me directly.

In the top left hand corner of the (business size) card is a logo
which is approx two and a half cm wide by three cm high.
Below that in size 10 font are two lines of words -
'MEMBER
Membership Expires 2 April 2011'
This leaves the upper right hand part of the card where the mail merge
inserts the members first name on one line and second name on the next
line. With Publisher the text entered with 'Text Best Fit' would allow
the name to be entered to fill the space. The font size would vary
according to the number of letters in the name could be from 48 down
to 24. In OO Writer the font size depends on the longest name in the
merge which applies then to all cards.
Hope you can understand all that.

As far as I know, the feature you need does not exist in OOo. However,
I thought of a workaround.

You could create styles that differ only in the point size of the
font. For example, if the font needs to vary from 10 points (for the
long names) to 15 points (for the short names), and you want it to vary
by half-point increments, you could create ten styles.

OOo Writer allows setting styles to different fields during a merge.
However, getting it to understand the length of the text in the field
it is merging, and applying the correct style for text of that length,
might be possible, but the code to get it to work would take a lot of
effort.

Instead, I would let the merge finish, and then apply the styles with
Writer's Find and Replace function. This can be done globally for the
entire document, and can be recorded as a macro, so that all you have
to do is run the macro each time after the merge.

The problem still remains of how to get Writer to recognize the length
of the names so the Find and Replace function will apply the correct
style. Perhaps someone has a better solution, but I would do it by
inserting a number in front of the name in the database. You can
probably do this with an SQL statement in the database. For example, my
name (John Jordan) is relatively short, so you might want to use the
largest font style for my name. If you have defined ten styles, and
numbered them 0-9, then I would be a 9. In the database I would appear
as 9John and 9Jordan. After the merge your Writer macro would search
for "9" and, upon finding it, change the style to "9." At the end of
the macro you can do a global Find and Replace to delete all the
numbers.

As a point of curiosity, what do you do with people who have three or
more names? E.g., there are thousands of John Jordans, so I usually use
my middle name as well. There are also lots of married people who
append their spouse's name, sometimes with a hyphen. And there are
other cultures where naming systems are completely different from the
traditions of northern Europe.

I wonder, since Calc merged cells can offer to shrink text if the
entered typeface/text too big. can this feature be incorporated somehow
to adjust the size of the business card text?

Gene,

Firstly you need to retrieve the video file from the internet.

Next insert into the Impress as a Video. Select menu

Insert ->Movie&Sound

Start slide show to view the movie.

Good point; my Win7(64bit) install was jre-6u18-windows-i586-s.exe
That said; if he downloads the OOo version without java, then the

As mentioned; I have 3.2.0 installed w/o issues on Win7 Home Premium
64bit (US English versions). I also had a previous 3.2.rc1 installed &
didn't bother to remove when installing 3.2.0 final.

Questions/suggestions:
1. When you try to install 3.2.0 do you have the OOo quickstarter
running? If so kill it first. Use the Ctrl-Alt-Del to start the task
manager and check for any soffice entries.
2. Check to ensure that your most recent java is fully up to date
(http://java.com - "Do I have Java") - if not update it to the latest
version (version 6 update 18).. Then download the Win OOo version
*without* java:
http://download.openoffice.org/other.html
Make sure this box is _unchecked_:
Include the JRE to the download (this option is not available for Linux
32/64-bit Debian and Mac OS).
3. Are you logged in with admin privilages? If not, do so and try
installing. If it hangs, go back to the task manager and see if you can
tell which office processes are running. Note: it should not be
necessary to be admin to install, however this is how I installed mine
w/o issue, so just trying to 'replicate' my process.

If it was a ppt file she was trying to open in Impress; she may well have
had problems. Impress is the "least" compatible of an otherwise
fantastic suite as far as I'm concerned. I've had all kinds of problems
opening old powerpoint files in Impress. If you've got sound attached,
be prepared for less-than-sterling results. Lots of my presentations
from last year, developed in 2007, had problems too with keeping text box
placement. I also had problems with the fonts when I changed from MS
Office under XP to OOo under Ubuntu. I've got the ms core fonts loaded,
but even still the font conversion in Impress wasn't very pretty.

I just clicked on the link and Firefox opened a download and there it
was, no looking needed. I can send you a copy if you want.

Andreas, does that empty file (with no data source) illustrate anything?
Sorry to be dense, but I don't see how it answers André's question.

Not sure why you got an empty file. The one I got seem to have every
thing there.

That's good to know, Andy. Now I need to find out why we see different
files, so I'd like to try another approach: Do you know how that file
was found? - that is, if you go to the page

http://user.services.openoffice.org/en/forum/
where do you find (or drill down to find) that file?

Thanks,

Andreas, does that empty file (with no data source) illustrate anything?
Sorry to be dense, but I don't see how it answers André's question.

That's the long answer. The short answer is while you can, recommended
practice is usually to store the file name and path (either absolute or
relative) in a field, and then fetch that information for whatever form
you want to use.
