Re: External mere applications allowed in versions?

2009-08-27 Thread Dirk Stoop

Hi Rob,

See this page:
http://versionsapp.com/viewdocpage/versions_wf_comp_customscripts.html

And the files section of this google group for an idea on how to
integrate another app for comparisons.

If what you're planning on using is at least modestly popular, chances
are someone else already created a script for it and uploaded it here.

Cheers,

Hi Arnold,

I just resent your license, if you don't see it in your inbox, please

If you ever lose it again, you can always enter your email address in

Re: Disable auto syncing with repo

2009-06-25 Thread Dirk Stoop

The way to do this right now, is to group several bookmarks in a
folder and collapse it in the bookmarks list.

Any indicators that aren't visible will not be updated.

This may seem convoluted, since many people will want to organize
their bookmarks by category (like e.g. applications, frameworks and
websites) and not by groups of repositories that belong to one catgory
of work they do.

A major drawback of offering an active/inactive-toggle per bookmark is
that it adds an additional layer of administrative work to dealing
with bookmarks that (I think) most Versions users don't need. It's
easy to forget that which bookmarks are active, so we would have to
indicate their active/inactive status in the bookmarks list itself
(one idea: by graying out the icons when inactive. another one: do
something similar to what Mail.app does to indicate an account is
offline, but that's way too much clutter imho.). Regardless of what
kind of indication we go for, this feature will require us to add some
extra visual clutter to the bookmarks list.

All that being said, we'll look into this. :)

Re: FileMerge not found

Hi Jean-Christophe,

Can you check in a terminal window if the "opendiff" command can be
found?

running:

Versions looks for opendiff in "/usr/bin/opendiff" and uses that
command to launch FileMerge.

If you have it installed in a different location (maybe because you
only have the iPhone SDK installed and not the Mac toolchain as well?
just guessing), please let me know so we can address that in a future
update to Versions.

Re: Ask for informations before buying Versions

2009-06-21 Thread Dirk Stoop

Hi Franck,

To answer your questions:

1:
It is possible to use Versions without an internet connection, to do
so, go to the "View" menu and make sure that the option "Show Updates
from Repository" is unchecked. You'll then be able to browse working
copies normally, as well as compare the current version of a file
against the BASE revision, using the "Local Changes" toolbar item.

2:
You can use a Versions license either on one computer used by multiple
people, or on (a reasonable amount of) multiple computers used by one
person. Two computers per person won't be a problem.

I'll take this rare opportunity to quote myself:

Without delittling your opinion, I do think I have:

- given some insight in a key reason for why you may have had a bad
support experience,
- expressed my public apologies for the whole bad experience,
- indicated that we acknowledge there's a bigger problem than just us
all being at WWDC,

There's a default button in the toolbar, labeled "Local Changes", it
compares the current version of a file in the working copy against the
HEAD revision of that file. You can also find it under the "Action"
menu, under "Show Local Changes". This feature is described in the
Versions Help documentation, when you search the help for "compare"
it's in the very first page that comes up in the results. Also
mirrored here: http://versionsapp.com/viewdocpage/versions_wf_comp_basics.html

We have an open plugin architecture for that, although 'plugin' and
'architecture' are both overly big words to describe what it entails
(used here for lack of better terms coming to mind right now). See the
page at http://groups.google.com/group/versions/files for several
examples contributed by various people, a script (there's that word)
for Delta Walker, contributed by Lukas, another member of this group,
is in there.

This feature is also documented in the "Versions Help", along with a
how-to on using these scripts. Also mirrored here:

I'm sorry you've had issues using Paypal. There are definitely
drawbacks to Paypal, but it works very well for most of our sales, not
just for us, but for our customers as well. For people who can't or
prefer not to pay with Paypal we can offer alternative payment options
when they email us with their request.

Overall, I get the impression you are pretty unhappy about your
experiences with us so far, which makes me unhappy in turn. We put as
much attention as we do in our software because we care about how
people experience it, and good, timely support is a part of that
experience. I am sorry we let you down. I do hope you'll give us a
chance to do better in the future, and if not, I understand.

However, some of our best people are answering support emails right
now, therefore I'm changing the 'Discussion subject' of this thread

Re: bbedit 8 support?

2009-06-01 Thread Dirk Stoop

Hi Mark,

If you download the BBEdit.py script from over here:

http://groups.google.com/group/versions/files

And copy it to the the following location in your home folder:
Library/Application Support/Versions/Compare Scripts/

You should be able to select it in the preferences instead of the
built-in BBEdit support.

This script works properly with BBEdit 8.7.2 (only on Leopard though),
but not with the latest releases of BBEdit.

Re: Export Bookmarks

2009-05-29 Thread Dirk Stoop

Nope, the Bookmarks.plist does not contain passwords. Those are stored
– securely – in the Keychain exclusively.

It does however contain the username you set up for each bookmark (and
details like whether bookmark folders were collapsed or expanded the
last time you ran Versions), so the easiest scenario would be:

• Create repository bookmarks exclusively
• Optionally file them in groups
• Set them up with a bug tracker URL if you have one (als stored in
Bookmarks.plist)
• Copy the Bookmarks.plist file over
• Instruct your peers to double-click every individual bookmark to
change the username and enter their password.

If you want to know more, have a peek at the file with Apple's
Property List Editor (part of the Xcode developer tools), you'll see
that the file's structured exactly like the bookmarks list in
Versions, you'll likely be able to guess what most things are for.

Cheers,
- Dirk

Re: Export Bookmarks

2009-05-28 Thread Dirk Stoop

Hi Matthew,

There's no 'export' option in Versions yet, we're hoping to add that
some time in the future.

But, you can export your Bookmarks manually. There's a file called
"Bookmarks.plist", which is stored under your home folder, in Library/
Application Support/Versions. If you copy that file over to other
computers and launch Versions on them, they'll get the exact same
bookmarks you have.

Oh yeah, forgot to mention,

The folder I checked out/exported is 1.4 GB in size. (bunch of PSDs,
TIFFs, a bunch plain text (source code) files and some other binaries)

Re: Export takes too long

2009-05-26 Thread Dirk Stoop

I just did some tests with a direct Gigabit ethernet connection to our
development server, with our largest repository.

Checking out the trunk took:
213 seconds with Versions (SVN 1.6.1 libraries)
200 seconds with the command line client (SVN 1.6.2 command-line
tools)

Exporting the trunk took:
147 seconds with Versions
153 seconds with the command line client

(No other network activity)

The small variations between Versions and CLI are pretty likely to
dissappear when averaging multiple test runs, but I didn't have the
patience to run each test several times.

It seems to me that there's something about your svnserve process
that's making the exports take longer. I can't see any significant
diferences between Versions and the command line client.

Cheers,
- Dirk

Re: Problems with Versions 1.0.4 over HTTP

2009-05-26 Thread Dirk Stoop

Hi Casper,

I have no clue (yet) what might be causing this, but we'll try to
reproduce the problem over here right away.

If we need any more details regarding your setup, I'll let you know.

Since I don't know how long it will take us to reproduce and then fix
the problem, it might be best for you to revert to using Versions
1.0.3 in the meanwhile:

Re: Export takes too long

2009-05-23 Thread Dirk Stoop

So, time does go by faster when watching videos, or slower actually..

While watching youtube is not necessarily the worst workaround, we'll
try to figure out what might be causing this.

I'll try to reproduce the problem at our offices – possibly with and
without youtube, and definitely using Versions vs. the command line.
If there's anything weird going on in Versions while exporting I
should be able to notice similar differences.

My first guess is that somehow, Spotlight feels the urge to start
indexing your export during the export, severely getting in the way of
disk I/O, and somehow doesn't feel this way during a checkout. But
that's just a hunch. One thing we could try is to checkout and export
to a location that's inside a folder that's marked as private in
Spotlight's preferences..

Have you tried doing an export with the svn command-line client?

Thanks for reporting this, I'll let you know if we are able to figure
out anything more.

Re: Registration problems with Versions

2009-05-22 Thread Dirk Stoop

Hi Adian,

Sorry for taking a while to get back to you.

Is it possible that your internet connection is firewalled or that
your computer is set up to use a proxy for https traffic?

Please see if you can, using Safari, open the purchase page on
versionsapp.com by following the "Buy Now" link. (Firefox and –as far
as I know– Chromium aren't affected by proxies set up in the Mac OS X
System Preferences, but Safari and Versions both are). If you can
view the Versions purchase page just fine in Safari, the problem
you're running into is not network related.

If you know of any further details that might be relevant, but don't
want to post in public, please send me a personal email at
d...@madebysofa.com and we'll figure this out together.

Thanks,

Re: Versions freezing mac, possible problem with encrypted disk images

2009-05-07 Thread Dirk Stoop

Hi Jim,

I, and several other people here at Sofa, use Knox to keep all of my
working copies in encrypted disk images. None of us have run into
this problem yet.

Are you using any third party application to mount and unmount the
disk image, or is it just a disk image you created with Disk Utility
and mount yourself by double-clicking it in the Finder?

Thanks,
- Dirk

Re: Versions crashing now several seconds after launch

2009-05-04 Thread Dirk Stoop

Hi Baron,

You can try to remove your Versions preferences file, and if that
fails, your Bookmarks.plist file.

The preferences file is called "com.picodev.Versions.plist" and is
stored in your home folder under Library/Preferences

The Bookmarks.plist file is stored in your home folder under Library/
Application Support/Versions.

I'd recommend moving both of these files out of the way (e.g. to your
Desktop) instead of directly deleting them, it would be a shame to
lose those settings if it turns out that the problem wasn't caused by
them.

If this fixes the problem, please send those two files to me by email
off-list so I can take a look at the cause of the problem.

Thanks!
- Dirk

Re: HTML instead of the bookmarks file (on first load)

2009-04-30 Thread Dirk Stoop

This sounds like a problem with WebKit, which is the framework we use
to render HTML in Versions. A lot of Mac apps use this same framework
for similar purposes, so it wouldn't surprise me if Skype also needs
it to render chat messages.

When you use the Safari browser to view web pages, does that work
normally?

If it doesn't, this definitely is a problem with WebKit. I'm not sure
what the best way to fix this would be, besides reinstalling OS X.
One thing you could try is to get the latest Mac OS X Combo update
from Apple and run that.

http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/macosx_updates/

Make sure you get a "Combo" update and not a regular one.

There's a decent chance that installing that will replace the defunct
version of WebKit. If that doesn't help, my best suggestion would be
to reinstall OS X and choosing the "Archive and Install" option during
installation — that should leave all of your own stuff and installed
applications in the right place.

Good luck :)

Cheers,
- Dirk

http://svn.collab.net/viewvc/svn/trunk/subversion/libsvn_ra_svn/client.c?r1=35533&r2=35532&pathrev=35533

The bug was that Subversion bluntly killed off any ssh processes it
was done with, while conceptually there should be no reason to do so.

Sadly, the versions of SSH that are included with all recent Mac OS X
releases apparently has a bug that causes the ssh processes to not
properly terminate themselves when they're done with their work. The
following bug has been filed by people in the Subversion community
with Apple:
http://openradar.appspot.com/6810722

Judging from the conversation on the Subversion bug tracker, I get the
impression that the concensus there is that Apple should fix their
problem with SSH on OS X, and that no changes need to be made to
Subversion. (If anyone who's actively involved in the conversation
reads this, please correct me if I'm getting it wrong).

We are currently considering to compile SVN 1.6.1 with the changes
from the above-mentioned 'fix' reverted and ship a new 1.0.4 beta of
Versions with that custom-built SVN 1.6 plugin. I don't think that
waiting for Apple to fix ssh in Mac OS X is the best thing we can do
for Versions users. Firstly, the word 'waiting' is in there, and we
don't know about Apple's schedule. Secondly: Some Versions users are
still running Tiger; I consider it unlikely that a small fix to SSH
will prompt Apple to release another 10.4.x update right away.

This issue is probably not as big of a deal for command-line SVN 1.6
usage, since normally when an update/commit/whatever is done, the svn
process terminates, taking any sibling ssh processes along for the one-
way ride. Any other SVN apps on Mac OS X that don't wrap the command-
line tools but use the SVN libraries directly, will probably run into
the same issue.

I'll let you all know as soon as we have things figured out more.

Thanks :)

Re: 1.0.4b/1.6 - mysterious "remote differences" ?

2009-04-29 Thread Dirk Stoop

Hi Gary,

You are indeed experiencing the very same problem.

This issue with SVN 1.6 also came up on the Cocoa mailing list when
people over there started asking whether Xcode SVN integration could
be used with 1.6:
http://lists.apple.com/archives/Xcode-users/2009/Mar/msg00443.html

For the same reason that we haven't shipped 1.6 support in a regular
update yet, Apple apparently has stated they don't recommend using SVN
1.6 with Xcode.

Right now, Subversion 1.6.1 is provided in Versions 1.0.4b as an
immediate solution for people who for whatever reason *need* to use
1.6, but we don't recommend switching to yet if it's possible to hold
off a little longer.

Strangely enough we cannot reproduce the problem on every computer
here, so for some people using 1.6 with svn+ssh connections might
actually work normally.

I'm sorry for the hassle these problems have caused you.

Hopefully we, or someone else, will find a solution to the problem
soon.

Cheers,
- Dirk

Re: 1.0.4b/1.6 - mysterious "remote differences" ?

2009-04-28 Thread Dirk Stoop

Hi Anton,

If you're accessing your repository over svn+ssh, this could possibly
be related to the problems with SVN 1.6 on Mac OS X with zombie ssh
processes. If quitting and relaunching Versions fixes the remote
changes counter, that could actually be the cause.

Refreshing the change counters of svn+ssh working copies using SVN
1.6.1 can leave zombie processes behind. When those keep adding up,
at some point your machine won't be able spawn *any* more new
processes until you quit Versions, which will also prevents any new
refreshes on svn+ssh working copies from taking place. If this is
actually what's going on here, launching any other process before you
quit Versions (which also takes out all of the stray ssh processes)
will probably also not do anything.

If the quit/relaunch thing doesn't take care of the 27 changes, could
you maybe take a look whether you get the same results when you use
Versions 1.0.4b with SVN 1.5.6?

Thanks!
- Dirk

Re: How can I set the CFBundleVersion according to subversion/Versions revision number?

2009-04-28 Thread Dirk Stoop

This one-liner will return the current BASE revision of your working
copy:

svn info | grep Revision | sed s/'Revision: '//

We use this snippet in Checkout to set the CFBundleVersion value in
the Info.plist at build time. We don't use Xcode to build the app,
and there might be a more efficient way to manipulate your Info.plist
than this when you're not running a Python interpreter anyways
already, but adding a custom script like the one below as a build
phase for your target should work (if you're developing on Leopard
that is, if I remember correctly, plistlib was not included with the
Python distribution that shipped with Tiger, but you could install
it):

(set shell to: /usr/bin/python, add your Info.plist to the list of
input files in the "Run Script Phase" window)
# --- begin of script

import plistlib
import os
from sys import argv

plistPath = argv[len(argv) - 1]
plistDict = plistlib.readPlist(plistPath)

currentSVNRevision = os.popen("svn info | grep Revision | sed
s/'Revision: '//").read().strip()
plistDict['CFBundleVersion'] = currentSVNRevision

# working with strings is easy in Python, something like what's below
should help with the short version
shortVersionString = u'MyApp v.1.0, build number %s' %
(currentSVNRevision)
plistDict['CFBundleShortVersionString'] = shortVersionString

# finally, overwrite the old plist file with the modified dictionary
plistlib.writePlist(plistDict, plistPath)

# --- end of script

Written mostly from memory, so fingers crossed that it actually works.

Re: FileMerge not found?

2009-04-28 Thread Dirk Stoop

Hi Chris,

Short version: run "sudo xcode-select -switch /Developer" in a
Terminal. That should fix it. (fingers crossed)

Long version:

Versions uses the "opendiff" command-line tool – also part of a
default Developer tools installation – to launch FileMerge.

Normally when you install the developer tools, a shell script, also
aptly named "opendiff" is installed at "/usr/bin/opendiff". The sole
purpose of that shell script is to somehow figure out where the real
opendiff command-line tool is located (normally at /Developer/usr/bin/
opendiff). The opendiff shell script uses yet another command-line
utility that's included with Xcode, "xcode-select" (also used to
switch between different Xcode installations on one Mac) to do this.
This opendiff script is the thing Versions tries to execute when you
use FileMerge, if it does not exist, Versions looks in the most likely
spot for the real opendiff command.

I bet that if you open up a Terminal window on your Mac and run "xcode-
select -print-path", it will print out "/Developer3.0".

If that's indeed what you get, run "sudo xcode-select -switch /
Developer" and everything should be fine, including the functionality
of any other parts of the Developer tools or third-party apps that
depend on this xcode-path to be set correctly.

If I'm wrong, let me know, and we'll keep on looking. :)

Cheers,
- Dirk

Re: Versions 1.0.4 Beta (Subversion 1.6 support)

2009-04-28 Thread Dirk Stoop

Hey Robert,

We'd love to blog about stuff like that; there are plenty of good
reasons to do so: it satisfies people's curiosity, it sends out a
clear signal that you care about your products and the people who use
them, and on top of that, it's good marketing by doing both the above
and driving traffic to your product website.

The only downside is that it takes a lot of time to author good
content. I'd love to publish more, and we probably should. We've had
good intentions to do so ever since we started Sofa, but somehow
there's almost always something on the to-do list that seems more
important. We've been pushing ourselves recently to write more on the
Sofa blog, and I'm sure Versions-related stuff will come up every now
and then over there.

So, aside from saying that you're completely right and that we'll try
to write more about what's going on: no promises. ;)

Re: Versions 1.0.4 Beta (Subversion 1.6 support)

2009-04-28 Thread Dirk Stoop

Dear Ganesh,

I understand that we might send out mixed signals by engaging in some
conversations, but not openly discussing all of our plans. The below
is not meant as an attack on what you just posted, but as a
clarification of our point of view to whomever is interested in it.
I've tried to keep this concise, sorry in advance for failing at
that. ;)

The purpose of this google group, from our perspective, is to provide
a forum for people who use Versions to have an open dialogue with each
other and with us.

People in our development team will primarily post to this group when
they feel they are most suited to address a question or concern posted
here. The community of Versions users is immensely important to us,
but Versions is not an open source project. Our primary
responsibility – one we take very seriously – is to provide you all
with an application that is *and continues to be* a pleasure to use.
Listening to concerns, engaging in dialogue about where Versions is
headed, and continuously improving the app are all part of that
responsibility. Providing a detailed account of what we are working
on and when exactly we plan to ship the fruits of our labor is not.

It is understandable when someone mistakes our silence about what
exactly we are working on for an indication that we are not working on
anything, but it is kind of a stretch. Remember Versions 1.0? We
added a bunch of new features in that release (Auto-refresh, change
badges, Info pane, etc.) that we had not discussed anywhere in public
before. That's more or less indicative of how we, and a bunch of
other commercial software companies work: We listen to feedback,
engage in conversation, then lock ourselves up in our offices to come
up with the best way to mix a variety of feature requests with the
direction we want to take the application into, and when we have
something to show for that work, we show it.

Work on SVN 1.6 support started as soon as 1.6 was – in our opinion –
stable enough to actually start work on integrating it, quite a while
before people started asking about it over here. There was no
reluctancy in working out how to integrate 1.6 in Versions, only
reluctancy in knowingly releasing a new build of Versions that
introduced significant new problems – the ones Koen described in his
post that started this thread – all of which are directly due to
issues in SVN 1.6. Releasing an update to Versions that includes SVN
1.6 will result in a lot of people who don't necessarily need 1.6
right now to switch from 1.5 to 1.6, simply because it's the "latest
and greatest" and it's just a click away.

We prefer not to release broken things, hence the reluctancy to just
ship it and the 'solution' of posting a beta here. There's no such
thing as "for people to use at their own risk" when your business
relies to a large extent on people recommending your products to
others, but by only posting the build here, at least people who get it
will know where to come to learn more about any problems they might
run into.

I don't agree with, but respect your opinion that the changes in
1.0.4b are underwhelming. It's a 1.0.x update, not a 1.x update, so
yes, it is intended as a maintenance release, one that focusses on
fixing bugs. Like we mentioned before on several occasions in this
group, we are working on new features and bigger improvements too.
For this release, taking care of a bunch of annoying bugs was more
important to us, because those prevent people from using the
application for its advertised purpose and feature set. Of the two
ways we could make Versions more useful, we chose to prioritize on
reliability first, new features are great too, but they had to wait.

Please keep telling us what you expect from us, especially when you
feel that we're not living up to it.

I hope I've given a bit more insight in how we work.

Thanks and sorry again for the rant :)

Re: New Versions with SVN 1.6 support when ?

2009-04-24 Thread Dirk Stoop

Hello Cristobal,

We will post a beta of Versions 1.0.4 – with Subversion 1.6 support –
to the list before we release the update through the main website and
as an in-app update shortly thereafter.

You'll be able to get your hands on it somewhere next week.

Kind regards,

Re: New Version

2009-04-24 Thread Dirk Stoop

Hi Ruluk,

You just beat me to it :)

We're aware of this problem. Andrew's post at the bottom of that
thread accurately describes what's going on. The best way to solve
this would to change something in HFS+, the second-best to handle the
differences in subversion. Since we're not in control of either,
we're stuck with providing a workaround for it in Versions. We are
looking into what the best/least disruptive workaround could be.

Re: New to Versions; basic usage help?

2009-04-18 Thread Dirk Stoop

Hi Karl,

Welcome to the Versions google group. :)

A good place to start might be the "About Subversion" -> "Key
Concepts" section in Versions Help (under the in-app Help menu). Once
you've skimmed through the sections there, the "Getting Started"
section of the Help gets into some Versions-specific topics. It's all
pretty brief, so shouldn't take too much of your time.

Please let me know if that helps,

Cheers!

Re: Feature Request: SSH Tunnels

2009-04-08 Thread Dirk Stoop

Hi Logan,

I've filed a ticket for us to investigate offering SSH tunnels.

To make performance acceptable using SSHFS, you can try to deselect
the "Show badges with working copy changes" and "Refresh when local
changes are made" options in Versions' preferences. With those
options off, you'll have to manually refresh your working copy every
time you want to see if anything changed or not, but it should prevent
Versions from causing a bunch of network traffic —and making you wait
for it— whenever it thinks something inside your remote working copy
changed.

One problem, also in the long term, is that I'm concerned that
offering SSH tunnels to setup working copy bookmarks from within
Versions is not going to do very much for performance. That's just a —
slightly— educated guess, we'll have to investigate a bit further
before we really know.

Two other things that don't help are:
- Adding SSH tunnel support in Versions would require some drastic
changes to the way the Browse view works, meaning a lot of engineering
time is needed for this feature.
- This is a very uncommon feature request compared to some other
requests we have received. (You're not the first or only person to ask
for ssh tunnels, but there are several orders of magnitude more
request for, for example, merging support)

Summarizing: We'll definitely investigate, but I can't promise when we
will get around to that, or if the investigation will lead to anything
fruitful.

I'm sorry if my answer –for now– is disappointing.

All the best,
- Dirk

Re: Export/Import Repository Bookmarks

2009-04-08 Thread Dirk Stoop

Hi Alex,

Thanks for the nice words :)

There's no import/export feature in Versions itself yet, but you can
copy your entire Bookmarks.plist file over to another Mac and Versions
will pick it up.

The Bookmarks file is stores in ~/Library/Application Support/
Versions, before you copy it over quit Versions on your new Mac. When
you relaunch it, all of your bookmarks will be there. You'll get a
bunch of password prompts as you click around them, unless of course
you also migrated your Keychains from ~/Library/Keychains to the new
computer.

I hope this helps .

Re: svn 1.6 support?

2009-04-04 Thread Dirk Stoop

Hi All,

We're working on an update to Versions.

That update will likely not yet include SVN 1.6 support though, we are
working on it, but need more time to test.

Unlike some other Subversion clients, Versions does not use the SVN
command-line tool internally, instead we compile the Subversion
library code and include it in the binary. One of the advantages of
our approach is better performance, the clearest disadvantage is that
we can't make Versions work with any release of Subversion that it
finds on the computer it's running on.

Sorry for the wait. We'll get SVN 1.6 support in your hands as soon
as we can.

Cheers,
- Dirk

Re: Feature Request: SSH Tunnels

2009-03-22 Thread Dirk Stoop

Hi Logan,

SSHFS seems like the best way to access the working copy on your
development server 'locally'.

I don't see a big advantage in offering SSH tunnels to access working
copies over ssh from within Versions, because it does not seem very
useful to only be able to access the working copy from within the SVN
client, but not from other tools you use locally on your working
machine, like your text editor of choice, etc.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding what exactly you're looking for, if so,
please enlighten me.

Thanks!

Re: BEWARE: Versions only permits one or two installs!

2009-03-22 Thread Dirk Stoop

Hi Brian and welcome to the Versions Google Group,

I'm sorry you had such a bad experience with registering Versions on
multiple computers.

Currently, our registration server allows up to 5 installations on
different computers within a single month. Re-registering from a
computer that has already registered before does not have any
influence on that number. When you exceed the 5 machines a month
limit, the license key will automatically be blocked for the rest of
the month. There are a couple of other, similar limitations in place,
their goal is mutual: to catch unreasonable amounts of registrations,
not to prevent legitimate users from registering and using Versions.
Sadly, sometimes a legimitate user does run into a limitation, like
you just have.

These limitiations (as in 5 per month, etc.) are not set in stone.
The registration process is built in such a way that if we find
patterns in which legitimate Versions users run into limitations, we
can change the exact logic that's used to validate a key. That's why
the license agreement mentions "a reasonable amount" of computers
etc., instead of an exact number and exact rules. We did not assume
we'd correctly guess the best logic for this the first time around.

After the launch of 1.0 we received several emails critiquing the
language used in the license agreement (before the "reasonable amount
of computers" was in there) and the exact limitations used by the
registration server. So we made tweaks to both the license agreement
and the registration server to clarify our intentions and make the
process less likely to cause any hassle.

Since those changes were made a couple of months ago, complaints about
the registration process have been extremely rare, indicating that
most people never run into the set limitations anymore. Clearly, you
did run into them. Not to justify the hassle you had to deal with,
but to clarify why: Since we're giving an automated process the
responsibility to assess 'fairness', not really something computers
are very good at, the accuracy of that decision is by definition
limited by the scenarios we could come up with while desiging the
system. So the process is hopefully very close to —but by definition
never completely— perfect.

Therefore, we'll gladly issue a new license key along with an apology
to anyone who runs into some limitations while registering Versions.

Please send me an email off-list from (or mentioning) the email-
address you used to purchase Versions, so I can get a new license key
to you right away. We will also take a close look at what happened
exactly, to figure out why the registration server got in your way and
make sure that doesn't happen again in a similar situation.

Sorry again for the hassle. We all dislike running into over-zealous
copy protection ourselves and really try to make our registration
server's criteria as easygoing as possible.

Thanks,
- Dirk

Re: Icon decoder ring

2009-03-20 Thread Dirk Stoop

Hi David,

A missing folder in a working copy is a folder that's present in the
repositoty, but not in the working copy.

Given that you mention changes inside the folder, that implies
something else might be going on. If the 'missing' folder contains
any characters with accents, you've run into a problem in Versions
that's caused by the way Mac OS X stores file names with special
characters.

If that's not the case, please open your working copy up in the
Finder, or look at its contents in the Terminal. You should see that
the 'missing' folder is indeed missing in your working copy. To get
it back, all you have to do is select the folder above it (the one
that used to contain the missing folder) in the Versions Browse view
and hit 'Update'. This will update everything inside that folder,
which also re-fetches any missing items below it from the repository.

You cannot update the missing folder itself (by selecting it in the
Browse view), because right now it doesn't exist in your working
copy. So trying to do that will result in a more or less cryptic
error. Basically, whenever you run into those kinds of things in
Subversion, it's helpful to keep in mind that every file and folder is
always 'managed' or 'controlled' by the folder that contains it.

If somehow this doesn't out work for you, please drop me an email with
a screenshot of the Browse view off-list and we'll figure it out
together.

Cheers!

Re: Icon decoder ring

2009-03-19 Thread Dirk Stoop

Hi Mike,

There's not a single reference on the icons, but the only ones that
appear in the interface without a label (afaik) are the icons in the
status columns in the "Browse" view. You can resize each of those
columns by the handles in their table headers to reveal a textual
label for them.

Hope that helps :)

Cheers!

Re: Current state of the application

2009-03-13 Thread Dirk Stoop

Hi everyone,

Thanks for voicing your concerns and support :)

We're still here, and we're not planning to go anywhere or shift our
focus away from Versions.

I'm sorry for the lack of communications from our side.

Directly after the 1.0 launch, we focussed on fixing bugs that we
introduced in some of 1.0's new features and on making sure that
everyone who bought Versions could actually register the application.
The work there varied from making sure registration would not choke on
weird hardware configurations, to implementing support for volume
licenses and making sure that registration data is stored correctly in
a managed networked environment. Not the most glamorous problems to
solve, but very important to some Versions customers who would
otherwise not be able to actually use the application.

After 1.0.3's release we now have most of the above mentioned issues
behind us. Right now we are now trying to solve some of the more
complicated things that we never quite got around to during the
frantic public beta and launch periods. These things range from
rethinking parts of Versions' interface, to dealing with limitations
of Subversion itself (One neat example for the technically inclined:
The root cause of the by now infamous bug, where non-ascii file-names
show up twice in working copies from repositories that had those files
commited from other platforms, lies in a combination of how HFS+
stores file names with special characters and how SVN does not take
that peculiarity —which is unique to HFS+— into account. We're still
trying to work out the best way to work around this problem).

We aren't planning to wait with the next update until we have every
'big' ticket in our bug-tracker resolved, but I thought this would
give you all some insight into why we haven't shipped any updates for
a while.

Besides these bigger problems, there are also some smaller nuisances
and bugs that we've been working on. An update that addresses a bunch
of these will be out soon, so please stay tuned...

We're extremely proud that so many people use Versions everyday and
that some of you care so much about the app that you raise questions/
start discussions about its future overe here, and we're not taking
any of that for granted. :)

Cheers,
- Dirk

Re: using BBedit for local file comparisons

2009-03-08 Thread Dirk Stoop

Hi Kevin,

This is a known problem, the reason it's not working is because we
directly try to launch the bbedit command-line tool from their
uninstalled location inside the BBEdit application, which has changed
in BBEdit 9.1.1.

The guys at Bare Bones Software have been very helpful in explaining
us the 'right way' to integrate with BBEdit and we'll have a release
of Versions out that will fix this pretty soon.

Hi Florian,

The folder you are trying to check out is empty, see:
http://code.google.com/p/bossprefs/source/browse/#svn/trunk

So there's nothing wrong with the URL, there's just nothing in the
trunk of that project yet.

Re: Problem creating a bookmark to Google Code repositories

2009-02-12 Thread Dirk Stoop

Hi Craig,

It seems that you're bookmarking the URL to the visual SVN browser
that's shown when you navigate to that exact url in your webbrowser.

When you navigate to the "Source" tab in the google code project, use
the URL that's listed under the Command-Line Access section, then "Use
this command to anonymously check out the latest project source
code:".

I'm guessing it will be:
http://quake3-iphone.googlecode.com/svn/trunk/

Re: Update on Commit window feature requests?

2009-01-02 Thread Dirk Stoop

Hi Lucinda,

We are considering to add this functionality in a future release.

Regarding 1. Diffing from the commit window: I think that would be a
nice feature to have, something I'd find quite handy myself too.

Re. 2. 'Enabling/disabling' items in the commit dialog: I'm
personally less certain about that, since I'm worried it would make
the commit dialog a bit busy. The current way of committing
selectively is to use multiple selection in the browser; adding this
feature would blur the line somewhat between what the browser's for
and what the commit dialog is for, but that's true for both topics.

There's something to say for a more powerful commit dialog, my main
concern is losing some of the clarity of Versions' interface by
providing too much overlap between browser and commit dialog. Once we
have disabling/enabling of items, it'd be just one step further to
allow adding unversioned files from the commit dialog, and so on with
the next extra feature.

These are just some of my personal off-the-bat opinions on where we
could/should take the commit dialog. We will have to work out some
prototypes of a more powerful commit dialog and see how they work and
feel. And maybe if we're lucky, we'll come up with an even better way
to make pre-commit reviews more fluid.

So definitely under consideration, but not yet decided exactly what,
how and when.

I hope I've answered your question a bit. I'd love to say "Yes, we're
building that", but until we have a prototype that 'feels right' we're
not ready to commit – pun not intended – on shipping an update with
these features.

Thanks,
- Dirk

Dear all,

We could add [Versions] to the beginning of every mail.

Upside: Easier filtering
Downside: Extra subject-clutter in your mailbox

I personally don't like having every email subject start with a tag if
I don't need it to filter them, but I can see why some people might
prefer it.

Please reply with +1, -1 – or whatever you feel like ;) – and we'll go

Re: BBEdit 9.1 update + show diff

2008-12-22 Thread Dirk Stoop

Yes, that would absolutely make sense.

But using the AppleEvent interface in BBEdit makes even more sense,
for the following two reasons:

1. The location of the bbdiff command line tool inside the application
bundle might change again in a later release (the location of this
file inside the app is not a way to interact with it that's endorsed
or recommended by BareBones Software)
2. We prefer not to require people to install the command line tools
for an application we integrate with if it's not strictly necessary.

Using the supported AppleEvent interface to show a diff in BBEdit
makes integration completely independent from the command line tools.
Plus, it should work with current, previous and future releases of
BBEdit.

Re: BBEdit 9.1 update + show diff

2008-12-21 Thread Dirk Stoop

Hi Haikuti,

We're planning to remain compatible with older versions too. Versions
currently uses the BBEdit bbdiff command line tool from it's
uninstalled location in the application bundle, which changed in 9.1.
We're investigating using BBEdit's AppleEvent interface in the next
release which should also work with older releases.

Which release of BBEdit do you want to use with Versions?

Re: Support for change lists?

2008-12-16 Thread Dirk Stoop

Hi Larry,

This seems like a great feature to manage a bunch of changes from the
command line.

I see some merit in supporting changelists from Versions – we want it
to play nice with other svn clients and support a broad feature set,
but I don't yet see a clear way to add the functionality without
making Versions harder to understand.

Currently the commit command and dialog are contextual to the
selection in the browser, just like every other command listed in the
'Action' menu and shown in the toolbar (including the optional items
in the 'Customize Toolbar...' sheet). Every way I can come up to add
support for changelists involves deviating from that one basic rule,
which has a pretty key role in making Versions' interface easy to
learn and consistent.

I don't think I understand changelists well enough yet to say it's
impossible to come up with The Right Way™ though, so I've filed a
ticket for this feature request as a task; for our team to sit down,
make sure we really understand it and see if we can come up with a
good design for the feature. We can't give it the highest priority,
but will discuss it when we can.

Thanks for the feature request! — and merry X-mas regardless of santa
prolly not delivering on this one ;)

Cheers,
- Dirk

Re: Quirky License Issue

2008-12-12 Thread Dirk Stoop

Hi Alexia,

I'm sorry for the trouble.

It looks like Versions does get valid activation data back from the
server, but somehow is unable to store it.

Could you take a look if a file named "License" is created in the ~/
Library/Application Support/Versions folder after you register? If it
doesn't show up, please take a look in the Console for any exceptions
that might have been logged by Versions.

A possible workaround is to manually copy the "License" file over from
the same spot in the other account, but I'd of course prefer to figure
out what's going wrong in the first place.

Trying to stop spam in the group

2008-12-12 Thread Dirk Stoop

Hi everybody,

A quick FYI:

We've been seeing more and more spam messages and while we can delete
those from the group, we can't delete them from everybody's inboxes.

So in an attempt to stop spam, I've just changed the settings for the
Versions group to require moderation for messages of new members.

This means we probably won't be seeing all that spam anymore, but –
especially since all our team members live in western european
timezones and a lot of group members live in the US– it also implies
that if someone posts to the group for the first time, it might take a
while for the message to appear. We'll do our best to moderate as
quickly as possible.

Thanks,
- Dirk

Everything except for passwords are stored in a file called
"Bookmarks.plist".

You'll find it at: ~/Library/Application Support/Versions/

It's pretty readable if you open it up in e.g. Property List Editor.

Refunds for students who bought before EDU pricing was announced

Re: Non-blocking SVN Commits

2008-12-11 Thread Dirk Stoop

Sadly that won't work when you're trying to keep working on the same
working copy during a commit..

Making commits non-blocking could be a pretty tough nut to crack, both
from a UI and a 'making sure nothing breaks' perspective. A couple of
our repositories also have pretty lengthy post-commit hooks, so I see
how this can get annoying.

It's very hard (and rarely smart) to make promises about future
functionality, so I won't about this particular topic :) -- but I
think we should look into the possibility at some point.

Cheers,

I do this myself all the time, and it works well for me. Could you
maybe walk me step by step through what you do exactly, so we can
figure out what's going wrong?

@Thinsoldier:

Good idea, we're collecting some things for a FAQ/hints page in the
documentation, I've put this topic on the shortlist.

Re: quick look disabled?

2008-12-09 Thread Dirk Stoop

Hi Elmar,

My best guess is that you're working in the Repository browser,
instead of in not the Working Copy browser.

The files in the Repository browser aren't actually on your Mac, so
offering QuickLook support for those is quite tricky. The FTP client
Flow has an intersting implementation, where they pre-load everything
you select in the application's main window, Quicklook then becomes
available on a file-by-file basis when the pre-loading is ready.

While it makes a lot of sense for an FTP client, overal we feel that's
not quite as elegant an implementation as we would like to offer from
Versions. So for now it's only possible to use Quicklook when
browsing a working copy. I'm secretly hoping Apple will publish a
public API to Quicklook, that should make it a lot easier for us to
offer a more extensive feature set and a (relatively) seemless
experience from the Repository browser.

Cheers,
- Dirk

PS: If my hunch was wrong, and you actually have a working copy
selected in the Bookmarks-list, I have no idea what's going wrong...
If so, please contact us through the now-working contact form on the
Versions website (or me directly by email and I'll get your message to
the right person) and we'll get to the bottom of this.

Re: HOWTO - syncing bookmarks between computers using DropBox

2008-12-09 Thread Dirk Stoop

Hi coolfactor,

The license file is indeed bound to the computer it is stored on.
Without this limitation, making an infinite amount illegal copies of
Versions would be as simple as copying a "License" file, so this is
not something we will change in the foreseeable future.

Now for a solution to the problem at hand:

1. Quit Versions
2. Create a 'Versions2" folder in the "/Library/Application Support"
folder.
3. Drag the "License" file from the Versions folder to the Versions2
folder.
4. Open a Terminal.app window and type the following two commands:

cd /Library/Application\ Support/Versions
ln -s ../Versions2/License ./License

You now have the actual License file stored outside of the "Versions"
folder, but thanks to the symlink Versions can still find it and will
run normally.

If you repeat this process on every computer, you can sync the
"Versions" folder with Dropbox, the file that's different on each
machine now resides in the Versions2 folder.

Whenever you register a computer again, Versions will replace the
symlink in the "Versions" folder with an actual License file, so
you'll need to move it to the "Versions2" folder and create the
symlink again.

For clarity's sake: It is allowed under the terms of the EULA to
register multiple computers, but we cannot make the actual "License"
file, the proof to Versions that your machine was registered, generic.

We'll be looking into proper bookmark syncing ourselves some time
soon, so we can make the entire experience more seemless. :)

Cheers,
- Dirk

Re: Minor Nits w/ Versions 1.0.3

2008-12-02 Thread Dirk Stoop

Hi Robert,

Thanks for the bug report.

I've tried to reproduce the problems and found the following results:

Repository bookmarks can only be dragged to places within bookmark
folders on Tiger and never to the top-most level of the bookmarks
list. We'll dig into this problem as soon as we can, a workaround for
now is to put all your repository bookmarks in one shared folder, it
should be possible to organize them any way you want within the
folder.

I could consitently reproduce the problem with the window size and
location not being restored on Tiger, I filed a ticket for this bug
too.

Thanks again,
- Dirk

Re: 1.0.3 Popping authenication messages for CollabNet

2008-12-02 Thread Dirk Stoop

Hi underscore,

It sounds like there is a working copy in your bookmarks list that has
an external defined at collabnet. One way to figure out which one is
to make a backup of your 'Bookmarks.plist' file (it's in ~/Library/
Application Support/Versions) and remove working copy bookmarks from
Versions one by one until the dialog does not show anymore.

When you're done with that, simply quitting Versions and putting your
backup of Bookmarks.plist back in place will put all your bookmarks
back in place.

Just to be completely sure I've just searched through all of our code
and the only place with a collab.net URL in it is a help page about
Subversion's history that links to their website.

Did this problem just start popping up in 1.0.3 for you?

We'll get this sorted, sorry for the trouble. :)

Thanks,

Re: Problem with "Compare Diff"

2008-11-29 Thread Dirk Stoop

Hi Balu,

The amount of changes in the files shouldn't have any influence.

Do you consistently get the same problem with the same files? If so,
and the filenames contain any special characters (umlauts, accents,
etc.), this might be related to the encoding problems mentioned in
this thread:

http://groups.google.com/group/versions/t/a57e867ad35a12ec

There's also a good chance that an exception happens somewhere in our
code to fetch the two files, which should result in a log entry that
you can see with Console.app. Please let me know if anything gets
logged over there when comparing changes fails.

Thanks,

Re: Educational Pricing

2008-11-29 Thread Dirk Stoop

Hi all,

As we said earlier, we are working on EDU pricing. There is no
announcement yet because we want to get it right the first time
around, *because* we care.

However, we think it's more important that Versions works right for
people who already bought it and for people who are using the demo,
than it is for us to promote the software in additional ways. That's
why we are spending most of our time fixing bugs and improving
performance right now.

Versions 1.0.3 is around the corner, the third update since the
launch. We have sent a build out to a handful of people who ran into
authentication and performance problems before using beta-9 and 1.0,
and from their experience with it, we think it's almost ready for
general release. Once we get 1.0.3 out to everyone, EDU pricing can
move up a notch on our priority list.

@Jason: We do care about losing sales, we just think that making our
current customers happy is more important right now than working on
our pricing. That's our decision to make and it's your good right to
think that it is the wrong decision. If you really want to talk about
this, shoot me an email off-list and lets start a real conversation,
rather than assuming that we don't care about our business, sales or
the economy as a whole.

@Mikhail: I'm really sorry for the trouble you ran into with Versions
1.0.2. This is exactly the kind of thing we're working on right now
and the fact that you no longer enjoy using Versions is very important
to us. Like I said above: Fixing these kinds of problems is more
important to us than offering educational pricing, we want to do both,
but the issues with the software that you are running into have a
higher priority. The problems with the contact form have been fixed,
but if you don't feel like trying that again, please drop me an email
directly and we'll get on it.

Thanks,
Dirk

Re: Will not let me license..

2008-11-22 Thread Dirk Stoop

Hi Bruce,

Those two problems were not related. The contact form was hosted on
our main product website on appengine, the registration server is a
machine we rent elsewhere.

The contact form has been taken down for now and the problems with the
registration process have been fixed both on the server and in
Versions 1.0.2.

I'm glad you were able to register now, sorry for the trouble.

Re: 'Contact us' form broken - how do I contact you?

2008-11-22 Thread Dirk Stoop

Hi all,

Sorry about the problems with the contact form, we have replaced the
form with direct email links yesterday.

The contact form will be back later, when we're sure the problems it
had are gone.

If you are concerned about whether we're working on any of the
problems we ran into right after launch, please look at the volume of
posts to this group by members of our team and the two new releases of
Versions that shipped directly after 1.0.

All the best,

Re: Git support

2008-11-20 Thread Dirk Stoop

Hi Ketchapay, (and everyone else who asked about git support at some
point)

I understand the desire for a nice graphical git client, but Versions
isn't it.

Git is an entirely different beast than Subversion. For starters it's
decentralized, but I probably don't have to tell you that.

Adding git support to Versions would be like adding html and css
editing to iWork's Pages, it would feel like a kludge; the
application's interaction model doesn't fit with the model of that
particular task at all. Versions' aim is to keep as much of the
complexity of SVN out of your way as possible, but the way it works is
nonetheless modeled with that complexity in mind.

One thing I personally like about Versions, why I haven't switched
back to the command-line for my everyday work, is that it doesn't try
to replace the way Subversion works with some other vision of how
version control should work. Our goal is to make working with
Subversion at a whole easier, more pleasant, and more
straightforward. Part of that is educating people a bit about
Subversion —evidenced most concretely in the Versions help files, but
more importantly in how we stick as closely as possible to
Subversion's terminology for commands and all that, as well as bigger
design decisions like how Versions shows working copy bookmarks nested
in repository bookmarks—, ideally, a seasoned Versions user should be
much more comfortable with the SVN command line client than someone
who never used Versions.

That in itself is enough of a challenge without making Versions deal
transparently with the immense differences between SVN and git.

For these reasons and because we believe that really good apps do one
thing and do it extremely well, we won't be adding git support to
Versions any time soon. If we ever embark on creating a git client it
would most likely be an entirely different app. I sincerely doubt we
would be able to re-use any significant amount of code and designs
created for Versions in such an application.

Since we have our hands full with our current project and an
obligation to our customers to keep improving it, as much and as fast
as we can, I hope that while we keep making the best Mac Subversion
client even better, someone else will step up and create a really good
Mac git client.

Cheers,

- Dirk
the Versions team

Hi Nano,

Thanks for the additional info :)

With the info you gave it shouldn't be too hard for us to reproduce
and isolate the problem.

I'll get back to you when we know more.

Thanks again,

That should clear it up, Subversion alas has a couple of different
kinds of locks, see this page for a more detailed explanation:

http://svnbook.red-bean.com/en/1.2/svn.advanced.locking.html

(this is from an old revision of the svn book, the corresponding pages
in the latest edition no longer clearly mention the different kinds of
locks you can run into)

For a more concise explanation: open "Versions Help" from the help
menu in-app and see the section "Being busy" under "About Subversion -
> Key concepts -> Multiple clients" (also online over here:
http://www.versionsapp.com/viewdocpage/about_svn_kc_multiclient.html)

Basically all you'll need to remember is to hit the "Cleanup Working
Copy Locks" action menu item when you see those little clock icons in
the browser, or run 'svn cleanup' from the command-line.

Hi kapowaz, that's possible.

You can even register Versions on more than two computers.

Re: Umlaut problems

2008-11-19 Thread Dirk Stoop

Hi Nano,

The issues with special characters only happen in some isolated
situations. If you, for instance set up a free beanstalk repository,
it will work fine with files in any kind of character set. (I just
added a file named "ßûse ギズツせ" to one of my testing working copies
without problems).

We're aware of the problems and are trying to figure out the actual
regression of this bug.

Any information you can provide us about the server that's hosting
your repository would be helpful.

Sorry about the trouble with the contact form, it's been performing
intermittently and we'll be replacing it with plain email addresses
soon while we figure out what exactly is causing the problems.

All the best,
