Inserting page break into a PDF from HTML

2018-05-28 Thread David Noel
Over the years, I've put together a large website of scientific articles,
at AOI.com.au. It's been reasonably successful for a science site, clocking
up half a million visitors.

I write each article (eg Article2491.pages) directly in html, using Pages.
To make a Pages article into a web article, I just export it to plain text
(Article2491.txt) and change the .txt to .htm (Article2481.htm). I test by
dragging the .htm over to a browser, which shows me how it will look on the
Web, and when satisfied I upload the .htm and any associated graphics onto
the live AOI site.

Now I'm working on converting 6 of the website articles into a
print-on-demand book with KDL, Kindle Direct Publishing (part of Amazon),
to be called "How the Universe Works". KDL accepts the PDF of a book text
to make the book layout, and a PDF can be made simply from an HTML article
or book text by Printing to PDF.

I'd like to find a way to put a marker into the HTML version of a
book/article collection, so that when it's converted to a PDF, it will
create a page break in the PDF. Page breaks are needed in the PDF to make
new pages at the start of chapters and book preliminaries such as title
page, contents page, etc.

Can anyone suggest a simple way of doing this, please?

Cheers, David Noel.

Re: opening appleworks docs

2018-05-25 Thread David Noel
Hi Gary, you may be able to open Appleworks text and spreadsheet files with
Pages and Numbers, respectively. Appleworks database files are more
difficult. Let me know if you need to open database files, but probably you
have text files.

Just a thought, if you use more than one language, Command-blank will move
you down your language list, and it's easy to accidentally press
Command-blank.

(If you mouse to the language in your menu bar, just left of the date, it
will tick whatever the system thinks is your current input language.)

Re: Security

2017-05-19 Thread David Noel
Hi Brian

The message was mostly in Simplified Chinese Mandarin characters, but there
were many invalid characters, and the message was not in Mandarin. You are
probably right that it was a wrong font setting. I received the message in
English, it was as following:

"Hi Bill

Just in with client, which is why quick replies (as just wanting for some
software to install and quickly checking email between installs).
After you double click the DMG and then it opens a Finder window. Before
you click anything else, that is where you need to hold down the Option key.
eg. You double click the DMG file. It opens to a “white disk looking icon”
on the desktop. Then before you click whatever icon or installer is there,
you hold down the Control key before you click on it. You’ll then get a pop
up window that you choose “Open” from. the list.
It will ask if you want to approve the Application, and you then choose
“open”. It should then open as normal.

If you want to keep it all the time, and it’s not an installer, but an icon
of the Application itself, you drag it into your Applications folder.
Then go to Applications folder and before doubling clicking it, you then
use the Control key method. Then the same steps to open it.

It should then open after that."

Cheers, David Noel.

PS. On a computer, Chinese characters use the equivalent of two English
letters for one Chinese Character.

Re: Optical drive problem

2017-02-04 Thread David Noel
Hi John --

-- I don't know whether there are any problems with attaching an
external DVD drive to the Mac Mini, but doing this with my iMac was a
cheaper and quicker solution than going into the computer box. And
when I upgraded my iMac, I switched the DVD drive to the new model
without problems.

Adding a graphic to an existing page in html

2017-02-02 Thread David Noel
I'm trying to work out if it is possible, in a displayed html page, to
add a button or link which if clicked will dynamically add a graphic
below the click point.

Is this possible? Using Javascript maybe? Or would it require use of a
more powerful language?

Any ideas welcomed --

Desktop suddenly expands

2017-01-24 Thread David Noel
I have been having a problem where my desktop suddenly expands, adding
some centimetres of margin all round, and pushing windows to one
margin of the expanded desktop.

Mousing down to one margin of the desktop scrolls that margin into
view. If accessing the bottom of the desktop image, menus etc at the
top of windows may disappear. Similarly, mousing to a side edge will
cause the contents of the opposite edge to slide out of view.

The problem disappears if I restart, and can be coped with without
restart, but I'd like to know what's happening -- I assume something
in the System Preferences get reset. Any ideas, folks?

Cheers, David Noel

Problem with Magic Mouse

2017-01-05 Thread David Noel
With my new iMac (Sierra 10.12.2), when I opened up this morning, the
behaviour of the (wireless) Magic Mouse was strange. Moving the mouse
would only move the on-screen arrow jerkily, and only a short
distance.

I disconnected it, and plugged in the mouse from my older iMac. This
worked normally, and I'm writing this message with it.

Going to System Preferences/Mouse with the old mouse was also normal.
When I disconnected the wired mouse and switched on the new wireless
mouse, the message "wait for a Bluetooth mouse to be discovered" came
up' followed by "Found Magic Mouse 2" and then, almost immediately,
"No mouse found". Turning the wireless mouse off and on again at first
repeated this sequence, but afterwards showed no recognition.

Is there anything further I can do to check the wireless mouse, or
should I seek help from Apple?

Re: Blocked from Google

2016-12-31 Thread David Noel
I'm having a problem again with connecting to popular sites on my new iMac
running Sierra 10.12.2. I'm writing this on my old iMac running 10.6.8,
which does not have these problems.

On attempting to connect to Google, I get:

This site can't provide a secure connection
www.google.com.au doesn't adhere to security
ERR_SSL_SERVER_CERT_BAD_FORMAT

I get similar results with other https sites like Youtube, iTunes, Chrome
etc. Last time I had this problem (as below), I went through my Keychain
(which showed no expired certificates) and through DigiCert High to check
the certificates. After checking, the services worked OK again.

This time I got through to SSL Server Test (https://www.ssllabs.com/ssltest/)
and checked the certificates for Google, Chrome, Apple, etc, which all came
up "A" or "A-". But the new iMac still cannot connect to these sites.

Other non-https sites can be accessed with Chrome, Safari, and Firefox,
also some https sites like Unibank (Australian).

I've also searched (on this old iMac) for people having similar problems.
At

https://community.rapid7.com/thread/9213, titled "Open Nexpose by use
Chrome". it said:

"We've seen this issue with Mac OS X Sierra in particular. It seems they
have made an update to the system keychain that affects Chrome, Safari,
curl, and any other applications that use the system for SSL/TLS
connections. Firefox is not affected since it uses its own implementation.

We are currently working on a fix in Nexpose to get around this issue,
though."

So it seems the problem may be in Keychain, rather than with the
certificates themselves. And Firefox did not work for me. Can anyone throw
any light on this, please?

Re: Magic mouse

2016-12-19 Thread David Noel
It might be of interest here, I have the current wireless Apple mouse
with a new iMac, the mouse has a fixed internal battery with a USB
port for recharging, like a phone. It's quite handy to not have to
worry about batteries, and the system tells you when the battery level
is low.

Blocked from Google

2016-12-18 Thread David Noel
I have a new iMac which I use for most purposes, running 10.12.1 El
Capitan. Since I upgraded from 10.11, I've had occasional problems
where my browsers can't access Google and Apple's own sites.

Error message from Chrome on accessing gmail:

"this site can't provide a secure connection, mail.google.com doesn't
adhere to security standards".

Error message from Firefox on accessing Apple:

The owner of support.apple.com has configured their website improperly
to protect your information from being stolen, Firefox has not
connected to this website".

Safari did not produce an error message, but seemed unable to load
certain sites.

In the past, I've been able to clear this problem by Restarting, but
this hasn't worked today. Has anyone any ideas on this matter?

It's inconceivable that Google and Apple have the faults indicated. As
I'm unable to access gmail, I'm sending this from my older machine
still on 10.6.8 -- this does not have the above problem.

Thanks and Merry Christmas --

Re: CD not working

2016-10-31 Thread David Noel
Hi Walter, don't know how to tell if the drive is defective, but if it
is, you're better off getting an external CD drive (eg Samsung, $80?)
rather than getting the internal drive replaced ($300??). And the
external drive Apple sell won't work with older iMacs, only with the
newer iMacs which were supplied without an internal drive. Cheers --

Re: iMac won't switch on

2016-09-08 Thread David Noel
-- Thanks very much for that, Ronni. It looks as if the problem is
just in the Power switch itself -- it has no spring feel.

-- I find that my trusty iMac is now classed as 'obsolete' by Apple,
so authorized Apple repairers won't take it on. I'm asking Daniel by
CC about somebody who might fix it, the machine was working well up to
the moment I powered it down, so it should be recoverable.

-- I've ordered a new iMac, the old one was apparently eight years or
so old, so I think I got my value from it.

-- I have a 1.5 TB external drive attached to the old iMac, it is
bootable with a 10.6.8 system. On the new iMac, would I be able to
boot it from this external drive?

Cheers, David

Re: Problems recording SBS with EyeTV 250

2016-07-29 Thread David Noel
I'm delighted to report that by following Alan Smith's
recommendations, I've managed to get all the EyeTV tuner channels good
again. The important steps appeared to be cleaning or re-seating all
the links between the aerial and the tuner -- not only at the tuner
itself, but also at a booster/splitter in the line (TV reception in
Shenton Park is "shadowed", a booster is needed for an acceptable
signal). Thanks again, Alan.

Problems recording SBS with EyeTV 250

2016-07-17 Thread David Noel
I have an Elgato EyeTV 250 tuner on my iMac (10.6.8) with which I
record TV programs on at a time I can't watch. Results are generally
quite satisfactory on all channels except for SBS. SBS broadcasts at
184.50 MHz, and recordings on any of the SBS/NITV channels at this
frequency suffer from missing and broken frames, especially for the
first few minutes of a recording (the problem slowly diminishes, but
doesn't disappear, after 5-10 minutes).

I've searched the Net for a possible fix for this problem, so far I've
only found the item below from "EyeTV signal problems" at
http://forums.whirlpool.net.au/archive/1184566, which suggest coating
the "the inner conductor of the antenna plug with sticky tape". I've
had a try at this, with no improvement, but I may not be understanding
what's actually recommended -- the antenna lead terminates in a very
thin solid bar in the centre, this goes into a thin cylinder in the
centre of the tuner socket. Either is only about 1.5 mm across, and
it's very difficult to wind a tiny piece of sticky tape round either.

Has anyone any idea what's going on here? Would it be possible to put
some sort of joiner in the line which might alleviate the problem at
the SBS frequency? I imagine it is tied up with the SBS frequency,
Channel 7 next below at 177.50 MHz and Channel 9 next above at 191.50
MHz have no problem. I'm really baffled here.

David Noel

Since I moved house, EyeTV (with an EyeTV DTT) reported signal
strength 100% but signal quality 0%, rendering it unable to tune to
any channel. I replaced much of the antenna cabling with no effect.
Eventually I discovered that if I made *loose* contact on the antenna
plug, the signal quality jumped up. We used it like this for months
but it was very difficult to get it right. Eventually I carefully
coated the inner conductor of the plug with sticky tape (scotch magic
tape to be precise), and it now gives signal quality 100% with the
plug firmly pressed in. I'm pretty comfortable that it will work
reliably in this state.
/
You sir, are a genuis. I registered with this forum to say thank for
your advice above. It worked a treat on my Netstream DTT. I was
literally minutes from putting it in the bin when I decided to try
your trick.
I put a small piece of sticky tape in the inner conductor rod of the
antenna connection and instantly I had a massive improvement. Who
woulda thought that would make such a difference. Crazy.

Anyway, thanks. And to those having similar problems, please try this
for VAST improvement on quality of picture and signal.

Gmail putting wanted daily item in Spam

2015-11-10 Thread David Noel
Has anyone any suggestions on getting Gmail not to put a regular item
in Spam? On most days I receive an update on science news items from
Science Daily, and Gmail insists on putting it into Spam (their spam
detector is pretty good, this particular item is the only one giving
trouble).

The item comes from:
All Top News -- ScienceDaily<noreply+feedpr...@google.com>
reply-to:All Top News -- ScienceDaily <newslett...@sciencedaily.com>

I have tried putting all combinations of the above into my address
book, but with no effect. Each day I open my Spam list, mark the
Science Daily item "Not Spam", and clear the rest. Every couple of
weeks, when I have marked the item "Not Spam", a message comes up from
the Gmail Spam Team asking if they should take account of this. I
always reply "Yes", and it makes no difference.

I don't suppose there is anywhere I can contact the Gmail Spam Team
directly to get a specific item like this not spammed out?

Re: Gmail putting wanted daily item in Spam

2015-11-10 Thread David Noel
Hi Stephen, thanks for the suggestion. Gmail does a good job for me,
just this one annoyance.

I can understand how others prefer to store their emails on their own
computer(s), but for me, the advantages of storing everything in the
Cloud, permanently available at any time anywhere in the world, and
not having to worry at all about backups, work very well. For example,
I have scans of my passport stored as attachments -- if I was
unfortunate enough to have my passport stolen in Azerbaijan, I could
quickly print out a copy as ID.

Unless you upgrade to a newer OS X you will continue to have problems using
Safari no matter which version of Safari you have installed.

 For your Flash Player issue:

 1. Completely uninstall and reinstall Flash Player.

Uninstall Flash Player | Mac OS

2 Then download and run the installer again.

For your Gmail security issue, the only thing I can suggest is use Google's

DVD burn gives blank disc

2014-10-24 Thread David Noel
I am wondering if anyone can give me a suggestion as to why burning a
DVD with Toast sometime gives me a blank disc.

I'm using both Toast 8 and Toast 10, and burning a disc image created
previously by Toast. The burn appears to go normally, and Toast 10
even says Disc XXX burned successfully, but on inserting the disc
into a reader (OS X 10.6.8, 2 GHz Intel Core Duo iMac), the system
says You have inserted a blank disc.

I actually have 2 disc burners, the internal one (now not always
reliable), and an external Samsung one which I use routinely. I have
wondered if the system gets confused which drive it is writing to,
though I do check the Recorder Settings carefully.

The problem happens quite a lot, but not always, sometimes the burn
goes straightforwardly. Any ideas?

Re: IceTV widget

2014-09-26 Thread David Noel
I have used the IceTV widget in the past, but for many months now,
when I open the Dashboard, this widget has This feature is currently
unavailable. Our team is working hard to improve the quality of our
Recommendations and a new methodology will be in place shortly.

I downloaded the IceTV Dashboard Widget as suggested by Ronni and
followed the procedure to install it (replacing the existing copy),
but the result is just as before.

 Hi Neil,

Have you tried downloading and installing a fresh copy of the IceTV Widget?

Download our IceTV Dashboard Widget here. It will be downloaded to your
desktop, or the location you've chosen in your browser's preferences.
Double click the .ZIP file to unarchive it (this may happen automatically
for you, depending on your settings).
Double click the widget's icon to install it in Dashboard.
You will be asked if you wish to install the widget. Click Install.
Click keep to keep the widget.
Follow instructions below to authorise the widget.

In other words, I have all the program details and times, split into

Anybody having the same problem or know how to fix it?

I tried raising an IceTV customer support request but, three days later, I'm

I also tried raising it on the IceTV forums:

Re: Screen dump from video

2014-09-01 Thread David Noel
Many thanks to Ronni for all that explanation. However, the actual instance
where I had the failure of Command-Shift-4 to capture a screen shot appears
to have some other origin than being 'protected'.

The video I was accessing was that referenced by

http://www.alexanderslostworld.com/episode-guide/episode-5-the-land-of-the-golden-fleece/

and was recorded via EyeTV.

It seems that when viewed with DVD Player, Command-Shift-4 on a paused
frame of ANY video does not work, it only gives a checkerboard image.

However when the video is viewed with VLC, as suggested by Peter
Hinchcliffe, then a paused frame can be captured with Command-Shift-4 as
expected. Thanks again to all helping here!

Screen dump from video

2014-08-30 Thread David Noel
I use the Command-Shift-4 sequence to select part of the Desktop for a
number of purposes -- the image is saved (by default to Desktop) as a
'Screen shot ...date/time...png' file. It's a good way to quickly capture a
web-usable image from a web source or a graphics-handling app without
having to Save it from the app.

However, when I recently tried this on a paused frame of a video clip, the
sequence just produces a grey-white chequerboard pattern of the same size
as the selection. Can anyone tell why this is, and maybe how to save a
video frame?

You have used the correct method to capture a paused video frame
screenshot... as long as the video is NOT DRM protected.

Just a grey/white checkered pattern indicates you may have encountered a
copyright / fair use issue with the protected content from which you want
to make a screen capture. The laws and standards for fair use vary by
country and the content owners and software implementers of course must try
 to account for all that.

If this turns out to be the issue and you have done the legal research to
prove what you want to do is allowed under the principle of fair use then
you may want to investigate using software with a different implementation
of the protection schemes that will allow you to make the screen capture.

One piece of software which may work from a technical standpoint would be
 the VLC Player. http://videolan.org/

Re: WAMUG 30th - Memories

2014-07-28 Thread David Noel
There's some anecdotal stuff about early work with computers in my MT article:

A Complicated Recipe : Diversity and Infocap Content [MT105]
http://www.aoi.com.au/MTSite/MT105.htm

You can google
Dissolving the Device-Handler Code
for the section.

At the time, I was programming a PDP-8 computer to run the fall-back
system for the UWA Library (the full system was run on the WARCC
PDP-10, but that was months late in getting to the running stage).

It's amazing in today's terms, that an extra 4K of computer memory
cost enough that we clubbed together to buy the PDP-8 a lottery ticket
to finance the purchase.

Another memory, not in the article, is that the operating system for
the PDP-8 was tailored in a lengthy process after selecting the bits
of the system you needed. I would start the assembly process at the
end of Friday afternoon before going home, it was still running on
Monday morning after the weekend, taking almost 3 days to complete.

 Severin Crips’ Email

My introduction to computing was on a Bendix G15 at National Research
Council of Canada in Ottawa where I was a PostDoctoral fellow from 1960. It
was a single user machine on which you booked time and it had paper tape
input and typewriter output and had a regular maintenance outage for one
hour every morning! Shortly before we left Canada in 1964 (plus two sons
who had materialised in our time there) the division acquired a new machine,
still paper tape input but which ran Fortran, to which then I was
introduced. Back in Physics at UWA an IBM 1620 card machine had been
acquired and was a huge advance. Still single user for which you could
book time but many jobs run by the Computing Centre staff as batches. I
remember almost wheelbarrow loads of boxes of cards! Then a DEC10 time
sharing machine appeared, a huge step forward in speed and capability
including direct talk to the computer from a terminal! and the announcement
that this would satisfy the University’s computing needs for at least the
next 5 years. In 6 months it was up to saturation and the CDC Cyber
machines, extensive mainframes with card readers, magtape drives, line
printers and the works all running principally batch more or less took
over. A later DEC machine ran as an adjunct, usable from remote terminals
around campus for direct input/output, a foreshadowing of desktop machines.

The PCs started to appear, both IBM and others and Physics elected to go
Mac, a brilliant choice as far as I was concerned! Machines proliferated
through teaching and research, I had a DEC PDP-8(?) controlling my X-ray
spectrometer and collecting data and communication directly with a Mac in my
office. For home I bought one of the first 128K bundles, with a dot matrix
printer and a carrying case, around $2000 from memory. It was subsequently
upgraded to a MacPlus with a massive 4MB of memory and used as office
computer in my wife’s art gallery. On my desk at work I had stepped up to an
SE 30, a real speed machine, and progressed through a series of upgradings
until my retirement in mid 1964 at which time we moved to Albany and I
purchased a PowerMac which since then has progressed though a series of
necessary(??!) indulgences to my current 21.5inch iMac, which cost a similar
amount to that first 128k Mac.

In my time at NRC in Ottawa and in Physics at UWA there was always expert
advice and comment for problems immediately to hand, usually from someone
just a door or two down the corridor or at the help desk in the Computing
Centre, a vital thing when unravelling Fortran puzzles! In Albany that was
not similarly available and at some stage I discovered WAMUG on who/which I
have relied heavily every since. So many times a seemingly hopeless
impasse has been resolved by an exert input, I know my experience mirrors
that of many others. Notably Ronni and Daniel have pointed me in the right
direction many, many times as have so many other members. Much information
sits in the archives to be unearthed; I admit to laziness and just reask the
question. I cannot speak too highly of the benefits I have had from my
WAMUG membership, my $30 annual fee is trivial for the return I get, not
only from direct answers and speedy resolution with no time wasted when
problems arise, but from general learning from seeing solutions emerge from

Adverts on browsers

2014-06-27 Thread David Noel
I use 3 browsers regularly, Safari, Firefox, and Chrome. Lately the
last two have been plagued with adverts and extra ad pages opening up.
These are not only very irritating, sometimes they halt showing a page
for long periods while the ads or ad pages try to load up.

I've apparently managed to suppress ads on Chrome by loading the ABP

I'd like to know if others have had these problems, and what's the
best approach to dealing with them?

Re: Eye tv

2014-05-28 Thread David Noel
Hi Julie --

-- Are you trying to burn something to DVD directly from an eyeTV
recording compacted after editing?

-- If so, it's best to always follow these stages:
1. Edit the original item(s) with the eyeTV editor.
2. Open Toast and (on video setting) write the items to Disc Image.
3. Double-click on the disc image, double-click each item in turn (it
will open in DVD Player), and quickly drag right through each item
using the bar.
4. If all the items play successfully, only then double-click the disc
image (brings up Toast), command-W to get the image list (you can
check here at options to see how compressed the result will be), then
click on the orange ball at bottom right, and insert blank DVD when
requested.

-- If any items don't play successfully from the disc image, Export
those items to Documents using Elementary Streams option, then later
try to make a new disc image using the item from Documents instead of
the the eyeTV edited version.

-- There's more complications if you need details, but a Sense key
Error usually means that Toast has found a problem with reading the
eyeTV file. Proceeding as above means you don't waste a DVD on a file
which gives Toast problems.

Hi Denise --

-- As Stephen says, you can set up a password in System Preferences.

for the same reasons as you, I find:

1. If there is a power outage etc or unexpected shutdown, the system

the system goes down at night.
2. It's quite easy to forget your password, so if you take your

Hi Ronni --

-- Thanks for blast from the past. I worked at UWA for 24 years, starting
in 1964, and was one of the early users of the PDP-6 -- in those days users
came in with their punch cards, mag tapes, or paper tapes and sat at the
console themselves to operate the beast. It was a huge step up from the IBM
1620 accounting machine, which did run on punched cards, but was programmed
by plugging wires into a logic frame. I actually did the Macro course at Mt
Lawley Tech -- by then it may have been to use on the PDP-10, the language
was the same.

Since Ronni has answered question 1 for you, I'll try to help with 2 3.

 2) With Bento 4 on the iPad, the synchronisation between desktop and iPad
is quite complete. You will see a record-for-record, layout-for-layout copy
of your desktop libararies on your iPad.

 3) Easy. First go to Settings on your iPad, then go to General
Keyboard. You will see a setting labelled Keyboards . Choose this
then tap Add New Keyboard. You will then see a comprehensive list of
alternative keyboards. At about position 8 on this list you will see
Chinese - Simplfied (Pinyan). Select this adn it wil lbe added to your
 list of available keyboards.

Exit out of Settings. Now, whenever the keyboard appears at the bottom of
the screen, you will see a new button, at the left of the spacebar,
containing a World icon. Tap this and the keyboard will change to the
Chinese one. Note that if you have more than two keyboards assigned this
button cycles between all of them.

As for using the Chinese keyboard - I'm afraid I'll have to leave that up
to you. My Chinese language powers are somewhat underdeveloped. Rest
assured, however, that it works fine in Bento.

Storing DVDs in paper envelopes

2013-03-16 Thread David Noel
Hi Everyone --

-- I've accumulated a couple of thousand burnt DVDs, which I number
and keep in the square paper envelopes. Can anyone recommend a
reasonable cheap storage solution, probably with drawers which can be
pulled out to check the numbers? At the moment, I keep many of them in
old library catalogue card drawers, spread out on a table (I have the
drawer cases, but these only take the drawers when holding 3 x 5
cards).

First off, this is not meant to in any way to cause offence, or be seen to
be having a go, especially to you Pete and I apologise up front if it seems
that way. I also apologise if it gets taken the wrong way as well,…as it's
 meant in the sincerest way.

Though I understand that wanting to grab the domains before someone else
did, this is a lot more difficult for .org.au's to do. Sure, if this was a
.com then I'd tend to agree.
A .com.au and .org.au hold a bit more weight to them when aiming to be
purchased. A .com.au can only be purchased with an ABN and has to have some
close resemblance to the Business Name or organisation.
A.org.au can only be purchased by a non-profit of charity organisation. And
normally those parties have to have a Certificate of Incorporation before
they can purchase it. (And perhaps a constitution as well, I'm not 100% sure
on that one). But it's certainly a lot harder for someone to sit on them for
the sake of sitting on them,….if that makes sense. i fully understand about
aiming to get them before someone else did and as long as a regulated
business is used to check domain names the risk of this happening is a lot
less (I've never been overtaken on checking a name for clients I've set
them up for and looked up, but I always use a well known and trusted domain
checker. And I can understand about worry about the use of a name in a
public forum where it may get taken, but realistically I feel this is quite
low for .org.au. The work involved to try and get it versus the reward from
it would be almost negligible. (if possible as well). The AuDA is very
strict on these sort of things, and even if someone did without the right
paper trail I have a feeling it would be overwritten if the wrong party
did it for that sole practice.
A .com is a completely different story of course,…lol. You see those go for
 silly sums sometimes! lol.
I know the cost is minimal, and I guess it's not like we had 4 or 5 to
 choose from,…lol :)) (or had been purchased,…lol).

Again, Pete this is not to meant to seem like an attack on you or anything
like that,.. I just really wanted to partially clarify that information for
interests sake. (if people were looking at domains later, it's not too
 scary). ;o))

I, like others have mentioned, are a bit concerned at the AUWA acronym, as I
feel it could be associated to do with UWA. That's why my first thought is
when I see it, as others have mentioned to me as well. So we could get
ourselves into some hot water with UWA as well. Hey, I could be wrong,..but
that's my first thought with it as well. The same, as Ronni mentioned, with
using Apple in the name. More so now that Apple are really pushing into
everything themselves with the Apple branded stores, and everything
associated with it. We certainly wouldn't want to get in trouble with them,
or assumed that we're something to do with Apple direct. That's a whole lot
of hot water to get into,…lol.
So, I could see, like Vlad mentioned (which Shane bought up), if it was to
be changed (at all) to be WA Apple Users Group. (WAAU or WAAUG - however
you'd' pronounce them) it's less in your face Apple.
Either way, whichever is used, WAMUG, AUWA, WAAU, WAAUG etc etc et), you'll
always need to explain it. I think that goes without saying. Even if
advertising WA Macintosh User Group, Apple Users WA, WA Apple Users, WA
Apple Users Group,..etc etc it can be seen as long,..or shorted to the
acronym, which will still need to be explained. So either way, I don't think
that's an issue (not a major one anyway I feel. Besides, any type of
 explanation

Re: Stubborn items in sidebar

2012-07-28 Thread David Noel
Hi Carlo --

-- Thanks for that, the problem has been fixed. I can't understand why
I couldn't find the sidebarlists in my user account before, I was
certain that I had looked in the correct place.

-- However, it has occurred to me that a double-check I had done of
searching for all files containing 'sidebarlists' might not have been
effective if these were 'hidden' files. Is this so, and if so, how do
you broaden a search to include 'hidden' files?

 Hi Noel,

When you say the usual sidebar removal procedure, do you mean pressing the

Are you certain your com.apple.sidebarlists.plist is missing? I hope I am not
stating something that is already clear to you but in the path below you must
substitute the name of your personal user account for yourname.

 /Users/yourname/Library/Preferences/com.apple.sidebarlists.plist

 It might be something like

 /Users/noel/Library/Preferences/com.apple.sidebarlists.plist.

If none of the above works post back as there are sterner measures you can
 try. :-)

Re: Writing to PDF

2012-06-26 Thread David Noel
Hi Peter, I'm not sure exactly what you mean by to write to/on a
PDF. You can make pretty well any file into a PDF version by going to
Print and then choosing PDF in the bottom left corner. You can write
on an existing PDF file by opening it with Preview, choosing Annotate
in the top menu, and then using the Annotate Tools which appear in the
menu at the bottom. Maybe you want something more complicated than
this?

Escaping from hung EyeTV edit

2012-04-08 Thread David Noel
-- I use the edit function to clean up EyeTV recorded items, usually
this works fine, but occasionally it hangs for no obvious reason, and
never recovers.

-- Up till now, I've had to go to 'Force Quit'
(Command-Option-Escape), which will show Eye TV not responding', in
red, and click on 'Force Quit'. Of course you lose the edits that you
had put in, but the original recording is OK and you can again try an
edit.

-- I've found (more or less by accident) that if you open Activity
Monitor, this will also also tell you that EyeTV is not responding.
But, if you click twice on EyeTV in the Process Name list, it restores
EyeTV to life, and you haven't lost your edits!

-- Apologies to those who already knew this, it was new to me -- maybe
it will help others deal with app hangs.

Don't waste your money on insurance if you think it will protect you against
theft. My daughter's iPhone 4s was stolen along with her handbag at a public
swimming pool a few weeks ago. She had taken the precaution of insuring
it, but upon making a claim she was told she was not covered because (and I

Changing video dimensions with Toast

2012-02-14 Thread David Noel
-- Hi, I'm wondering if anyone has advice about handling non-720x576
EyeTV video items when burning to disc with Toast.

-- Standard items broadcast from all the local TV stations are at
720x576 pixels. These can be recorded with EyeTV and burnt to DVD
quickly and routinely using Toast. I prefer to have everything on disc
at 720x576 because then the disc can be played on any Australian DVD
player.

-- Some broadcast items are HD, High Density, at 1440x810 pixels. If I
need a copy of these, at the moment I use the Export facility in EyeTV
to convert them to PAL 720 x 576 4:3 QuickTime movies, writing them to
a folder. Then I use Toast to write them to a disc image on my hard
disc, and after checking the disc image plays OK, I burn this to a
blank DVD.

-- This procedure usually works OK, but there are problems. First,
each conversion stage, to or from a QuickTime movie, takes a long time
(hours). I am wondering if there is a quicker way to resize these HD
items. Second, in the conversion to QT, there is usually some
distortion of the movie clip, with scenes pixellated, sometimes the
sound track gets out of phase with the video. Sometimes the corruption
is bad enough so that the later disc image stops halfway or will not
play. Sometimes Toast reports that it has copied a clip correctly, but
on playing the clip, it stops after 10 or 20 minutes as if it has
found the end marker, rather than showing the 60 or 90 minutes of the
original. Sometimes, not always, the pixellation and false end can be
reduced by again re-editing the original with EyeTV and again
compressing to a QT movie.

-- I'm just feeling my way and don't necessarily understand what is
happening, so if there are ways to cut out or shorten the conversion
stages I'd be grateful for suggestions. Or for reducing the corruption
on compression to 720x576.

-- Some broadcast items are at a third size, 720 x 404 pixels. These
can often be written to a disc image together with normal 720x576
items directly, but sometimes this doesn't work. Then I need to
convert to a PAL 720 x 576 4:3 QuickTime movie as for HD, a very slow
process. Any comments very welcome.

Cheers --

Try force quit from under the Apple menu (Apple icon)

 If that doesn't work:

 1. Open the  Activity Monitor  /Applications/Utilities

 2. Select ‘My Processes’ from the pop up menu on the right.

 3. Then click on ‘Process Name’ (so everything stays still so you can select

 4. Select Safari.

 5. Click the Red Force Quit button.

 Does Safari Quit?
See if they can now correctly shut down the Mac … Apple Menu Shut Down.

Try scanning from Preview: launch Preview, and choose File : Import from
Scanner. Do you see the MP 600 listed as a choice? If so, choose it, which
will cause the built-in Image Capture app to start. Click the Show Details
button and the scanner should start. If that works, try scanning with your

Re: TV antennas

2011-12-01 Thread David Noel
OK, I stand corrected. But I was not suggesting that a poorer antenna
was as good, only that the wide bars on the old antennas were not
needed -- I was under the impression that the bar lengths were a
reflection of the signal wavelengths to be collected, and that if you
were using only digital TV (broadcast on higher frequency, shorter
wavelength) and no longer needed analogue (longer wavelength), you did
not still need a wide-bar antenna. But I'm pretty ignorant in this
area, I only wanted to comment that a user should check if they still
needed analogue (some parts of WA are still without a digital signal).

 this statement is wrond!
you need a better antenna then for analog quite often with booster, reason:
 1) less power on transmitter
 2) digital tv is more sensitive to interferences
 3) digital tv is within the same frequency range as the old analog (180 to
 700 mhz)

i normally suggest the second or largest antenna, in many cases in the metro
the houses are on a down hill side pointing to the beach thus less
reception.. your antenna should point toward kalamunda morley areas,
eg in the Girrawheen area i had to fit the largest available antenna (vhf
uhf combo) plus a 30db booster, since that installation the customer has now
perfact dtv reception on 3 tvs in the house

if you move house then check if there is a optical cable connection, you may
 have dtv on that one.
in the Clarkson area i found a dtv connection within the optical box for the
phone internet, the signal was strong enough to feed 3 tvs through a passiv
 4way splitter

-- When you are happy with the image file, open Toast again and choose
Copy. Drag the image file over to the Toast panel, insert a blank DVD,
and click on the red burn button on the bottom right. You may first
need to close a menu panel which comes up showing the items to be
burnt.

-- With this approach, you will hardly ever burn a dud DVD. Also, with
this setup, Toast will automatically compress movies etc, so you can
get about 4 hours of play from multiple items on the DVD. When you
have the image over in Toast Copy mode, you can click on 'Options' to
check the quality after any compression. Hope this helps!

 Hi Bill Juliet,

Welcome to the Mac world ;-) What version of OS are you running OS X 10.6.8
Snow Leopard or OS X 10.5.8 Leopard?
Did you burn the DVD using the instructions below?

Toast has a built in Media Browser.
Select Media -EyeTV, and drag items from the listing of EyeTV
 recordings to Toast.

To burn a disc from within EyeTV, using Toast:
 1.  Open the EyeTV Programs window, choose the Recordings section, and select
 the video
recording you wish to archive by clicking on it once to highlight it.

 2.  Drag it from the Recordings section of the EyeTV Programs window, to
 Toast’s Video section.
Then, select what format you want to use (VCD, SVCD,DVD) in Toast.

You can also highlight the recording, and then press the Toast button at the
top of the Programs window, or choose for Toast via the Export command.

Also, did you BURN the DVD at a slow speed 4X ?
Can you play other DVDs on the iMac?

 Cheers,
 Ronni

Excess drop-down menus

2011-06-28 Thread David Noel

Hi All --

-- My sister-in-law asked me to look at a problem on her fairly new
iMac, and although I was able to sort something out, use of the iMac
was greatly hindered by unwanted appearance of drop-down menus. For
example, trying to log into gmail, if you clicked on the box for
username, up would come a drop-down menu starting with Copy / Edit /
Paste. Clicking anywhere on a page in most applications also would
bring up these menus.

-- Mostly the menu would disappear on typing Return, and usually the
box could then be typed into. Sometimes, though, clicking on a blank
box would not select it. I tried to run Repair Permissions on her
machine, but although I could select her main drive, I was unable to
select the RP option.

-- Has anyone any ideas on this? The iMac does have a wireless
keyboard (which I'm unfamiliar with), but can't think that this would
be relevant. I couldn't find anything useful on Apple Help regarding
menus. TIA.

That sounds as though it has everything to do with the keyboard. Rather than

away it could be a stuck key or a hardware issue.

 Hi Daniel Peter,

 Excellent posts!

I’m tossing up whether to Install Lion on an external firewire drive  (as
Daniel is aware, I have heaps of spare drives ;-), OR “Install Dual-Boot

installations of Mac OS X,  (Lion Snow Leopard) on my MBP can boot into
 Lion for testing purposes.
If I find I don’t want to keep Lion, I can uninstall it without having to
do a system restore from a Snow Leopard backup.
i.e Create a 20GB partition for Mac OS X Lion (after of course BACKING UP
 my current Snow Leopard system).

I would then still use Snow Leopard as my primary daily working system, but
 boot into Lion for testing.

I will give this a lot more thought before I decide which way to go.
But I  would be very interested in your comments on which way I should go
(watch it Daniel … if you suggest “where I should go, instead of which :-)

One of the best investments I have ever made was the little NewerTech
Voyager hard drive dock which I bought from Daniel. This brilliant little
device allows me to have a virtually unlimited number of hard drives at my
disposal. The Voyager has a couple of Firewire 800 ports, in addition to a
Firewire 400 and a USB 2 port (with an eSATA port to boot), so I always have
access to the fastest backup technology available.

Shortly after taking delivery of my nice shiny new 27 i5 iMac last week,
the first thing I did was to take myself off to Austin Computers and pick a
couple of new bare 1Tb hard drives for about $65 each. One of these is for
my constant Time Machine backup, and the other is for a weekly clone using
Carbon Copy Cloner. All I have to do is remember to pop out the Time Machine
drive each Saturday night and drop in the clone drive, ready for the
scheduled clone which will happen on Sunday morning at 9:00am.

The point of all this is that upon the release of Lion, it will be an
extremely simple process to get another drive purely for the purpose of
testing Lion on a fresh clone of my hard drive AT THE TIME OF PURCHASE, and
not have to worry about upsetting any current apple carts.

Thanks Peter for your comments, I appreciate you taking the time.

I’m leaning towards a completely separate drive to test Lion on ( I have
plenty of spare external FW Drives ;-).
The only reason I was going to install it on a separate partition on my MBP
was to save having to carry another drive in my computer bag if clients ask
to see a demo of Lion.
My computer bag already has extra drives in it to backup computers before I
work on them (people that don’t heed my warning “BACKUP BACKUP”!)

 Thanks again.

 Cheers,
 Ronni

A Directory rebuild with DiskWarrior 4.3 found lots of problems that were

A 'Repair Disk Permissions' also has no effect.

Any suggestions about how can I get rid of these two items? Is there a
 plist I could try deleting?

 Hi Ray,

Try a “click and hold” (that is press but DO NOT RELEASE the mouth button),
and then drag the offending folder icon out of the Sidebar to the Desktop,
and release the mouse button. The item should then go “poof” and be gone.

If that doesn’t work you can delete the Sidebar preference plist to return
it to the default state. Remove this file:

 /Users/yourname/Library/Preferences/com.apple.sidebarlists.plist

Then log out and back in, restart, or relaunch the Finder.
