Re: PDFs, Preview, file size & numbering, Oh My!

2012-01-01 Thread Mike Fuller
I'm running Mac OS 10.6.8.

I was intrigued by your file sizes Neil so I tried saving a PDF book (52 pp)
from Preview.

Original size - 5.1MB - quality good
Saved size - 4.9MB using no quartz filter - quality equally good
Saved size - 1.9MB using reduce file size in quartz filter - quality relatively
poor.

Another scanned magazine (192 pp)

Original size 83.3MB - quality good
Saved size - 83.3MB using no quartz filter - same quality
Saved size - 10.1MB using reduce file size - quality very poor

So what was happening with your file sizes? (which I realise is what you were
asking originally). I haven't tried swapping pages between copies yet - maybe
later tonight and I'll let you know the results. I probably won't explore the
numbering dilemma at this stage.

Curiouser and curiouser

Car charger for MacBook

2011-11-24 Thread Mike Fuller
I will be travelling around Tasmania in a camper van this summer and need to
charge my MacBook at the times I won't be in a caravan park.. Rather than a
heavyish inverter I was wondering if a dedicated car charger would be OK -
something like this:
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Car-DC-Power-Charger-Adapter-Apple-MacBook-Pro-85W-/250815715621?pt=AU_Computers_Apple_Parts_Accessories&hash=item3a65c81925#ht_3420wt_907

Has anyone had experience with this or similar and could assure me, or not, as
to its effectiveness and suitability.

Cheers

Re: Users home account change

Hi Jon

He is the method Apple suggests - http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1428

Another way is to re-install the OS from scratch - that way will delete
everything that is already there.

Thanks for that Pat.

Considering I live in Kelmscott it could have saved me running around today to
Subiaco. I'll certainly look at them in future.

I must admit I'm very pleased with the results from Mirage in Subi - the A3
prints look superb and only cost $15 each. It really adds a new dimension to my
photography when I can look at good prints.

Thanks Graeme. Although they may be OK my experience of outlets such as this is
that they don't produce a very wide colour gamut and the dynamic range is also
reduced compared to a good inkjet print. While they're OK for family photos
they don't quite make it with fine art stuff.

Thanks Tony

I have used Churchill's once, back in 1978!. I had my wedding transparencies
done (then printed the pictures myself) and I did find them very good. I had
forgotten about them but will look at them in the future.

Because of the deadline I ended up using Mirage in Subiaco. I thought their
prices were very reasonable and the examples on display were very good. The
proof will be when I pick up my photos today.

I actually think the best solution would be for me to buy a large format
printer but my wife or my bank would not react well to that one :-(

Hopefully I will be able to contribute also in the near future.

I want some prints of photos I have for a local competition, sized around A3 or
the nearest framing equivalent. I want reasonable quality paper prints,
certainly something better than the Harvey Norman type printing, but don't want
to have to pay a fortune for them. Because of the competition deadline it would

Re: Fed up

2010-12-14 Thread Mike Fuller

I have been with Exetel for 9 months now and, after varying periods with
Telstra, Optus, AAPT and TPG, Exetel has been far above any of those others for
what I want from a phone and broadband provider.

Their rates are very good (they have just raised the cost of phone calls
unfortunately) but what impresses me the most is that everything works and
there are no hassles. I have never had a dropped line on my ADSL2+ and the line
speed increased markedly (currently 1.09 MB/s), at least 30% more than I was
getting with Optus on the same line. They notify me weekly of the current total
cost for phone calls accumulating for the month and notify me of anything of
relevance - again so different from the big providers. They also provide a
forum for their users and management regularly respond to questions or concerns
on that forum.

A happy camper.

Re: Printing from iPad

2010-12-06 Thread Mike Fuller
Hi Diana

Printopia is another program you could look at. I use it to print from my
iPhone (it works equally well on the iPad) and it seems flawless.

I can print to any one of my four printers, none of which are WIFI, as well as
sending the file directly to my Mac.

There's a seven day trial period you can take advantage of also.

Re: Air Print

2010-11-25 Thread Mike Fuller
I can't find it in the iTunes store because it's not an app (imagine a little
emoticon slapping it's forehead and saying 'doh')

I did download the demo from the developer's web site
http://ecamm.com/mac/printopia/
and it worked like a charm. I downloaded direct to my iMac and I also printed
direct on my Fuji Xerox laser seamlessly.

It worked so well I can't wait for Apple to loosen the reins, I will buy this
program this week.

Re: Air Print

2010-11-25 Thread Mike Fuller

Airprint will not work with your Epson, at least not in it's current version.

However there are a couple of new apps that will do this, and Printopia in
particular looks good. See the Macworld review here:
http://www.macworld.com/reviews/product/727273/review/printopia_102.html?lsrc=top_3

Two drawbacks - it costs $10 USD and it doesn't look like its available on the
Australian iTunes store yet.

Re: Epson Authorised Service Agents

2010-05-19 Thread Mike Fuller

Hi Ronni

I have two Epson inkjet printers (R230 and R2400) that at different times
required ink pad replacement and resetting.

Rather than do that, which is an inconvenience and an ongoing expense, I
re-routed the overflow ink tubes (1 on the R230, 2 on the R2400) out the back
of the printers and into containers I could seal. I used freely available reset
software (Windows only) to reset the overflow counter and now I don't ever have
to worry about ink pads again. I just empty the container when it gets too full
(hasn't happened yet) and reset the counter when it next reaches its limit.

It was a relatively simple process and although I did have to drill a small
hole in the printer for the tubing, it took only a short time to complete. What
I find puzzling is why this isn't built into each new printer.

Cheers

Phone technician required - slightly OT

2010-04-08 Thread Mike Fuller

Brian Scott, a WAMUG list subscriber, has a real problem with his phone line
and has not been able to get online since the storm that passed through Perth
recently.

He lives in a block of flats in Subiaco and has been given a run-around by
Optus, the flats manager and the owner, so he is looking to getting the job
fixed himself. To do that he wants a private phone technician and is not sure
who to use.

Do any WAMUG members know of a good phone tech who could help Brian?

Re: Losing my connection

2010-04-06 Thread Mike Fuller

There is an Apple Discussion about the topic I raised yesterday : Internet
connection lost after sleep - Ethernet (although it seems to affect wireless
connections also)

Link is here:
http://discussions.info.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2258749&start=45&tstart=0

My iMac surprisingly didn't lose connection last night so I couldn't test your
recommendations Neil. But a couple of others that are mentioned in the Apple
discussion, and which worked for some, are:

Turn off the Wake for network access in the Energy Saver preference
Delete these two pref files:
Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/preferences.plist
Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.airport.preferences.plist

I've just done the energy saver one and I'll see how that goes before trying
anything else.

Re: Losing my connection

2010-04-04 Thread Mike Fuller

Thanks for your considered reply Neil

I think you're right in that it may not be every night - and I had to do it one
night when I was awake, then again in the morning.

I have been through the network assistance wizard (whatever it's called) and
each time the suggested solution is to switch the modem off and on again -
which does work.

I'll try your other suggestions and report back, probably tomorrow if it
follows it's mostly usual pattern.

I wonder if this is particular to the latest iMacs?

Losing my connection

2010-04-04 Thread Mike Fuller

I have a 27" iMac i5 running OS 10.6.3. It is hardwired to a Belkin
modem/router as well as a wireless connection to an Airport Extreme.
I have a MacBook also running 10.6.3 and connected wirelessly.
I have a Power Mac Dual G5 running 10.4.11 that is hardwired to the
modem/router.

Lately the iMac has had the annoying habit of losing the connection to the net
when asleep overnight and I have to reconnect by restarting either the modem or
the computer. It doesn't lose the connection when sleeping at other times.
The other two Macs don't have this problem.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Re: Inkjet cheap ink

2010-03-08 Thread Mike Fuller

Thanks Graeme

I'm not sure which printer you have (possibly Canon) but my experience with the
RIHAC CISS with my Epson Photo R230 has been very easy and almost flawless over
the last 15 months. No drama with having to insert chips (they're in the
supplied continuous cartridges) and the fitting took about 5 minutes. I have
refilled once in the time I've had the system - a less than 5 minute process.

The quality of the prints, to my untrained eye, were at least as good as the
Epson carts. I had a problem with fading at one stage and this was due to
using lower quality Kodak paper. On the couple of times I've contacted RIHAC
for technical issues I was impressed by their commitment and expertise.

And John, if you're concerned about quality my suggestion is to be more mindful
of getting good paper with a resin coating such as Ilford or perhaps the Epson.

Magic Mouse hiccup

2010-02-16 Thread Mike Fuller

I'm using an Apple magic mouse on my new iMac i5, Mac OS 10.6.2 and
when it is functioning well it is wonderful.

Unfortunately it has this awkward habit of invoking the Exposé Show
Desktop with left mouse clicks. This is intermittent and appears to
be increasing in frequency, sometimes two or three in a row and often
every 3rd or 4th click. If I don't physically hold the mouse and just
click with one finger press it seems to work normally but I'd have
RSI in 5 minutes if I had to do that.

Considering Apple doesn't even include the Exposé function natively
with the mighty mouse I'm not sure what's happening.

I did install MagicPrefs to see f that could help - it does help me
get back from the Exposé status (not always so easy otherwise) but
has no effect on the initial problem.

I have turned off all Exposé settings and trashed the mouse
preference plists, to no avail.

Can anyone help with this one?

Thanks

Re: UPS advice requested

2010-02-07 Thread Mike Fuller

Thank you to James, Ronni, Daniel and Rob for your considered advice.

The ideal would be for me to get a Belkin UPS with sufficient oomph
to keep my computer powered until it can shut down gracefully.
My budget, stretched to the limit because of the iMac purchase, would
suggest a Dick Smith surge board with $75,000 warranty, priced on
special at $40.

=PRS0006383

The likely result would be the Dick Smith board initially and
upgrading to a Belkin UPS when finances permit. I can then use the DS
board for peripherals, such as the laser printer. I'll contact you
then Daniel.

Thanks James

My intention for a UPS is purely so I can shut down the Mac in a
reasonable way - I'm not interested in running it for long during a
blackout. My primary intent is to protect the Mac from sudden power
fluctuations.

And my laser printer would certainly not be on the circuit.

if you intend to connect the printer as well then you have to
provide for surge power if its a laser printer

i'm using a 1600w unit & my powerbook, modem, phones can run for 3h

sometimes an inverter 12 to 240v, large battery pack (carbatteries)

Re: Continuous Ink Supply Systems (CISS)

2010-02-02 Thread Mike Fuller

I wasn't at the meeting yesterday but the mention of the CISS from
RIHAC prompted me to mention my experiences.

I have had a CISS from RIHAC for my Epson Photo R230 for over a year
now and it has served me wonderfully. The quality of the ink is on a
par with the Epson inks but the main benefit is the financial saving.
From factoring the ink as the major cost in a print run I now don't
consider it at all.

The service I've had from RIHAC is the best I've ever experienced
from any computer-related company. With any technical issues they
have replied promptly, personally and in detail (reminds me a bit of
Ronni in their approach).

I will be buying a CISS for my Epson Photo R2400 soon and save a heap
more. Considering a set of 8 Epson Cartridges is about $170, and the
RIHAC CISS filled with ink is $140 plus postage, it wasn't a hard
decision.

I have no affiliation with RIHAC, apart from being a very satisfied
customer.

You are not able to select any other printer, as no other printers

Mike try this:
1. Open Acrobat Pro first
2. Then go to File > Open to open the PDF in Acrobat

Then can you now see your Printers in the Page Setup?

Re: Acrobat Pro 9 print problem

2010-01-14 Thread Mike Fuller

Thanks for the replies Ronni and Dave and sorry for the confusion -
I'm trying to physically print a PDF file from Acrobat Pro to a non-
postscript printer so a little more data:

I'm using Tiger and attempting to print to an Epson R230, although it
doesn't matter which printer I use - it is the Page Setup that
doesn't allow me to choose any printer because none of them are
listed in the "Format For" selector.

On my wife's MacBook, using Snow Leopard, the Page Setup shows all
printers so it is just this version of Acrobat on this computer that
is the problem. I could get around it by moving the files and
printing from the MacBook but I was hoping there might be a simpler
solution, such as trashing a preference or something.

Hi Mike,

Are you using Snow Leopard?

In Snow Leopard, the Acrobat team replaced the functionality of the
Adobe PDF printer with an Automator function in the Print dialog
called Save as Adobe PDF.

It appears in the PDF menu at the bottom of the Print dialog.

Choosing this option opens a dialog where you can select an Adobe
PDF setting and choose to launch Acrobat or another PDF reader.
After making your choice, you’ll be prompted for a name for your
PDF file and a location to save the file.

Cheers,

Re: Airport Extreme - g vs n?

2009-08-05 Thread Mike Fuller

Thanks for that addition Stuart.

Yes, my broadband line speed is around 4.5 Mbps (although I can
increase throughput with iGetter or similar) so 802.11g speeds are
going to be plenty adequate for that.

I'm looking forward to finally using wireless after several Macs that
didn't have it.

Hi Mike,

Just wanted to throw my two bobs worth in.

Ronni's explanation is on the money. At the risk of losing you I
thought I'd

add a ramble too (apologies if you know all of this).

The issue with all network design is that it is not just about the
quoted
speed, especially when it comes to wireless. You need to take into
account
the whole network end to end. Speeds are quoted in Megabits per
second (not

bytes as is sometimes misunderstood). We deal in files that are bytes,
kilobytes, Megabytes and Gigabytes. There are overheads when
sending data
over the network to ensure it gets where it is supposed to go and
other
things such as encryption (generally 30%-40%). So if you have a
Gigabit
Ethernet connection you are not really getting 1000 bits per
second, more
like 600-700 bits per second (this varies). Similarly with
wireless. 802.11b
provides for wireless 'up to' 11Mb/s, and 802.11g 'up to' 54Mb/s.
These are
both delivered on the 2.4Ghz frequency, the same as most cordless
handsets,
microwaves and other wireless equipment. 'b' & 'g' are compatible
because
of this. There are products that boost the signal strength and
speed but

they are proprietary and not standard. 802.11a is also 54Mb/s but is
delivered on the 5GHz frequency range, meaning less conflict with
other
equipment. 802.11n is designed to provide faster speeds and better
range.
Where it comes into it's own is when you are doing video streaming
and other
multimedia applications, or have several devices that need higher
speeds.

Most people spend lots of money on network gear because it is the
latest and
fastest without considering the use. There is no point having a
140Mb/s
wireless connection so that you can access videos online, if you
have an
ADSL connection of 2Mb/s. No matter how hard you try, you'll only
get 2Mb/s
(minus overheads!). If you are sharing files across your own
network then
the faster speeds become worthwhile, as long as the network
adapters in the

computers can connect at those speeds.

I think for most people at home, the 802.11g modem/router/access
point(s)

are adequate, even with a number of computers, since most of them are
generally only sharing the Internet connection. I think you'll find
Ronni's

old base station will do the trick!

Cheers,
Stuart

The 1 thing not mentioned...what will you be doing with your wireless?
Web browsing? Printing? File sharing? Backups? Multi-player games? And
with how many other people using wireless in the house?

A lot of people are perfectly happy with 802.11g (except for the huge
software updates we endure these days), especially if there are only a
couple of machines and not too many neighbours competing for WiFi
spectrum.

If you're used to the reliability and capacity of Ethernet, you may be
disappointed by 802.11g, but in that case there's no harm having
802.11g on standby and using Ethernet most of the time.

As much as I'd like the latest Airport Extreme or even the Express,
with their 802.11n standard, money is a factor so I've been
considering the earlier Airport Extreme which uses 802.11g. These are
considerably cheaper on eBay.

My home setup will mean the computer will be within a 15m range of
the base pretty well all of the time.

I'd like to know whether the earlier Airport Extreme will be suitable
for my needs. Is there anything I'll be missing that I may not have
considered?

Sleeping again - but network preference problem

2008-11-23 Thread Mike Fuller
I'm not sure what did it but, after a long bout of insomnia, my G5
Dual 2.0 running OSX 10.4.11 is now automatically going to sleep.

Since it was discussed here we have had a security update and an
update to i-Tunes. I have also swapped some corrupt memory that
wasn't registering in the system with some that is working.

I'd be interested to hear if anyone else who had the problem has had
it resolved.

Another interesting item is that my network preference pane comes up
with a drop-down window that states "Your network settings have been
changed by another application." After clicking OK the window just
keeps reappearing, making it tricky to exit preferences without a
Force-Quit or some fast work with the return key and the mouse.

The general consensus is that the latest security update led to this
behaviour. Again, I'd be interested to know if anyone here has the
same problem.

BTW, a solution is to activate the "Require password to unlock each
secure system preference" checkbox within the Security preference pane.

iMac Problem - hardware?

2008-11-01 Thread Mike Fuller
I was asked to check a relative's Mac today - iMac 17" G5 running OSX
10.3.9 - because it wasn't working as they'd like.

I found:
Standard boot took at least 5 minutes most of which was on the grey
apple screen with the circular timer
It wouldn't recognise the internal optical drive - at least it said

Most interestingly, a safe boot holding the shift key always led to a
kernel panic and a hung computer, on the grey apple screen before it
reached the circular timer. This was with only the keyboard and mouse
attached.

Un "unsafe" boot just took a long time but reached the finder screen.

I checked the ram, swapping them out independently, but the same
symptoms occurred.

I did all the regular bits like refreshing PRAM, repairing
permissions etc. There was about 7GB free on a 74GB hard drive.

I couldn't boot up with a system DVD or CD because it wasn't
recognised, even when booting while holding the C key, so I couldn't

iPhone proximity sensor

2008-07-13 Thread Mike Fuller
One of the (many) neat things on the iphone is the proximity sensor
that turns off the screen and it's touch sensitivity when the phone
is close to an object, such as your ear or cheek.

When I bought my phone on Friday Optusworld had a special on fitted
leather cases for the phone and I believe many were sold, including
one to me. While the case was good there was one annoying feature -
the holes in the leather and the proximity and light sensors didn't
align correctly so that the screen would remain off after making a call.

If anyone bought this combination and is having trouble with the
screen remaining off at times the solution is to simply enlarge the
holes slightly. Look at the phone under a strong light, such as a
torch, to see the red sensors and cut the leather accordingly.

Like Mart I opted for the Optus $59 cap - it is the best bang for
your buck for a medium phone user but I'll just have to see how
much data I go through. I found I was spending more than that in
mobile calls from my landline so I could justify the cost as a
saving. Plus it was my birthday and that was an obvious sign I was
destined to get one.

As well as the $2 per month for the phone I've opted for insurance at
about $8 per month - the first 2 months free. Increase this to $11
for international insurance but this can be just for the time you're
overseas (my main reason for getting insurance).

I've found the gps mapping not too accurate but I've yet to play
properly with it.

I've downloaded the 150 page manual so I should have some idea about
what I;m doing soon :-) There's not a lot of detail in the docs that
come with the phone.

A 40D body only is around $1200-1300. eBay has body plus 18-55 lens

40D also has a full metal frame inside it's plastic cover where
as the xxxD models are only partially metal framed. Ergonomics
are also better on the 40D.
I've heard tales of woe from people having their xxD models die
premature and permanent deaths from being caught out in rain or
after a single splash of water - my D60 took 5 or 6 hours of
being in constant heavy monsoonal rain before it died... only
for it to resurrect it's self after a couple of days of being
left under a fan.

I've gone from the EOS D60 to the 20D to, just recently, the
40D... I was going to avoid the 40D because it looked like just
another minor upgrade like the 30D was... but my D60 died, 6
years old can't complain really - I haven't had time to get it
fixed (and given ebay prices for D60's are less than $350
probably cost more to fix than it's worth) and I didn't like
being without a second body and I got a good deal on the 40D.

Actually works out that the 40D is, at least for me, a major
upgrade and improvement in all ways except one from the 20D. (and
the 20D was a major upgrade in all ways but one from the D60)

while interface and image quality have improved significantly I
personally feel that the build quality (not quality control just
the material they use) has taken a small but noticable step
backwards ruggedness wise. Now this probably because consumers,
if the all the stuff in the forums is to be believed, didn't
like the hard tough plastic that covered the D60's metal frame
because it was "slippery" but my 6 year old D60 has less
scratches than my 3 year old 20D and my 2 week old 40D is already
starting to accumulate them as well.

Yeh rather peaved off about hearing Canon have moved their
camera repair business over east... the guys that were in
Osbourne park were great, very fast turn around if they had parts
in stock, first class service every time and now I've got a dead
D60 and a L series lens that the manual focus ring no longer
works on that I have to lose for a month or so.

Poor show Canon very poor show

Hi Muggers

Slightly off topic here but Im interested in knowing if anyone
has suitable info or web site links on the differences between
the superseded 10D and the newer 400D and 40D canon EOS digital
SLR cameras as Im thinking of upgrading. Are they of equal value
at all in terms of their build and operation? For example I have
heard that the 400D has a lot more plastic in its construction
and is less 'rugged'.

I have been using 10 and 20D models for my whale research with
great results and reliability. I rang Canon today and to my big
surprise was told they no longer service or repair cameras and
lenses here now: they are sent to Sydney and may take from 4 to
6 weeks!!!

Kind regards and many thanks to Ronni for her great help with

Except now I'm worried - it doesn't seem likely that a SMH page would

Is it possible that I've unwittingly downloaded some malware

I'm aware of the usual phishing tatics like the "you must validate

this.

On the other hand, I didn't have any valid CBA windows/tabs open -
so there

banks like
ING DO use windows like this to advise you that you are now
transacting on
your "personal" or "business" accounts and Adelaide bank DID once

strange kind of script logon method, there is no way that CBA would
introduce any drastic changes without lots of prior warning/

heard of anything similar. Are there any special checks I can/

That is though the Web interface

If you want to configure router in MAC computers kindly follow the

Initial Setup of the router

The router will be having totally 5 ports out of which
4 ports (Lan ports) will be together and one port (WAN port) will be
isolated , you need to connect the modem to the isolated port and
connect the computer to any of the four ports .

Log in to the router configuration page.
Open Internet Explorer or any other browser and access the site :

user name and password.

   or
3) Static ip detected - click next and type in the ip address

Free laser printer - last chance

2007-08-26 Thread Mike Fuller
I still have an Apple LaserWriter 8500 waiting for the first person
to collect for free.

From memory it had a developing problem with the fuser which is
probably why I haven't used it for a long time. I suggest it would be
good for parts unless someone has a fuser handy.

It goes to the tip Wednesday unless there is a taker :-(

Re: Cost of printing

2007-08-26 Thread Mike Fuller
I know this isn't quite what you were asking but, in addition to the
answers already given, another aspect to cost of printing with laser
printers is the toner capacity of the cartridge.

For instance, for my Lexmark T632 a cartridge that will do 5000 pages
will cost around $150 new - 3 cents per page.
An extra high yield cartridge that will do 32,000 pages costs around
$450 new - 1.4 cents per page.

Also, I can get that high yield cartridge completely refurbished and
refilled for $225 - 0.7 cents per page.

On an ongoing basis, laser printers are far, far cheaper than any
alternative I can think of. And the fast declining cost of colour
lasers makes them now within reach of many more users. Add the speed
of output and lasers become very attractive - mine does 38 ppm.

Cheers,

Mike Fuller

What works well?

Low volume usage (say 5-10 / week). While we bought an A3 model

Memory price difference

2007-06-28 Thread Mike Fuller
Looking at memory sticks for my newly purchased G5 I am amazed at the
price difference between vendors.

Apple 2 x 1Gb - $649 (NECC) free delivery
Zytech2 x 1Gb - $188 not sure on shipping price but local and
should be low

eBay 2 x 1Gb - $68 + $23 shipping from USA

And Apple charge $1299 for the ECC equivalent! Would anyone ever get
ECC at this price?

I'd love to support local (and I'd certainly ask Daniel for his
price) but the sticks from the USA are very tempting at half the price.

Has anyone had experience with getting memory from the USA?

Thanks,

Mike

BTW my auction G5 had 2 x 512Mb memory installed.

The $1100 one had a nice 20" Apple monitor. It also had a dual core 2

I bought the only one without a monitor for $725 (with 11% -> $804).
It was the only other one that had a dual 2 GHz processor. I'm

These all came from Central Tafe and they had original cartons to

The one thing always that you need to be conscious of is the
Startup current of the drive you intend to use . Will the power

With a Tower you can expect the Power supply to handle more than

Re: Renewable Energy Questions

Tony, well done for venturing along this path.

I am a member of the SomerVille ecovillage being developed at

from a large central array of pv cells and supplemental cells on the

cheap printer CD printer that someone has used. My printer cannot
get beyond Insipid colours

tom samson

Tom,

I'm using an Epson Stylus Photo R230 which I bought primarily for
printing directly onto CDs. I think it does a pretty reasonable job:
the colours are bright enough and the sharpness is almost equivalent
to printing on plain paper. It will partly depend on the surface
quality of your CDs - not all brands are the same. The printer does a
good job of photos on appropriate paper also.

The enclosed Epson software was usable but not intuitive and had a
few deficiencies. I purchased Disc Cover and it has been great for
all CD and DVD related labels, not just the discs.

I think the Epson was about $180 at Austin Computers but that was a
few months ago.

Cheers,

Mike

Re: Mighty Mouse

Mine does that on occasions, Clive. A vigorous clean of the scroll ball
with cotton buds and some alcohol (surgical spirit, isopropyl alcohol)
does the trick for me.

Re: Firefox Problem

2006-03-13 Thread Mike Fuller
Using version 1.5 (not 1.5.0.1) I have no problem with the scroll
arrows which are both there (I use the Mighty Mouse scroll button
anyway) but I do have a problem with the map displacement. I'm using
a G5 iMac with 10.4.5.

Cheers,

Mike

I installed again from the new dmg file. The about Firefox window

Is this the case with other users or is it just me?

Re: Photo Scanning Service

2006-03-06 Thread Mike Fuller

Hi Rod,

I'm using the Epson 3490 scanner that Bob mentioned and can recommend
it highly for home use. It has good results in picture quality, the
Epson software is reasonably easy to use and the price isn't too bad
(I think it was about $230).

The only minor fault is that it can be a little slow scanning at high
res. I would have appreciated a faster scanner when I did hundreds of
slides recently but for that I would have had to fork out much more
money.

If you do go for an Epson I would suggest updating the software once
you've installed from the supplied disk.

Cheers,

Mike

Maybe I should get off my butt and buy scanner.
Is Paul's suggestion ok for basic stuff like scanning photos?

Thanks Bob.

I did follow the discussion on ADSL2 with VoIP but what I couldn't
find in that lot was anything about how well the actual routers
performed, particularly if there were any that had problems.

I'll check with Daniel Kerr because he has one of the iinet Belkin
routers, but if anyone has anything to add on their routers with adsl2
+ and VoIP I'd appreciate it.

Thanks,

Mike

I will be changing to iinet and iinetphone soon and want to get a
suitable router but have heard the Belkin one they offer may not be
as good as it should be. I don't necessarily need wireless but it
must handle adsl2+ and have socket(s) suitable for using normal
phones with VoIP.

The IPod is not on, just connected to the G4 via the usual lead.

On the Ipod it tells me videos are in the VIDEO folder but when I
play them they are audio files?!

Is there a procedure for connection that I'm not aware of?

Weird... any ideas?

Just yesterday I connected my 30 Gb, 6 week old iPod to d/l some
music and updated it when the update message appeared in iTunes. The
ipod screen immediately went to a faint apple logo (no backlighting)
then a corrupted picture as soon as I clicked the select button, then
nothing

After trying all the Apple recommended methods of resuscitation it
remained dead so its now flying over to NSW for repair.

I would be wary of the current iPod update.

Yes, Popcorn doesn't copy commercial DVDs that have Macrovision
encryption.

There is another program that will rip a DVD, removing the CSS
encryption and Macrovision protection, compress it and burn a copy -
Fast DVD Copy. Cost is around $100 USD. The link is:

Aussie phonebook widget missing?

2005-11-21 Thread Mike Fuller
I have used the Australian phonebook widget and found it excellent,
but now I simply can't find it!

For some unexplained reason it has simply disappeared from my
computer (iMac G5 OS 10.4.3) and I can't find it anywhere on the net
except for the references to it in the WAMUG archives.

Was there some timed self-destruct mechanism or are there still some
copies of it around?

Re: ITMS connection

2005-11-02 Thread Mike Fuller
I've since tried accessing ITMS on my TiPB running OS 10.3.9 and
iTunes 6.0.1 and on the same network, with success. I've looked at
all the network, iTunes and Safari preference settings on both
computers and, apart from the expected differences with the local IP
and IPv6 addresses, they appear to be the same.

I have no proxies selected (thanks for that suggestion, Duncan).

The only substantial difference I can see is between Tiger and Panther.

I'll try initiating a new account on my G5 and see if that makes a
difference, but I'm open to any more suggestions.
