PhilNYC seems to think his Dodson DAC is better than the Transporter's
DAC.
Sleestack doesn't think it's total waste to use the TP as a transport.

things sound vary tremendously, which means they are an extremely

The sound is definitely one of personal preference but if my experience
is anything to go by I would suggest that the Transporter will be much
more reliable and better built than the Arcam.
Having replaced my Arcam with an SB3 at least I know that it will
actually play music when I want to

The Mac should spit out whatever it's playing, i.e. CD @ 44.1 and DVD
Video @ 48k. Can you not confirm this on the M-Audio? I have a couple
of M-Audio interfaces here. I'll check it myself.
On the Transporter settings page in the browser in the AUDIO tab,
there's a setting for DIGITAL CLOCK.

Am I better ripping at a lower rate? Does it even matter, so long as

If you're not experiencing dropouts when streaming other types of files,
then I would also suspect that the problem is with the transcoding from
AAC to (most likely) Flac. How is your server's CPU load when playing
these files?

As far as I know, it does. I sometimes and sometimes don't get drop
outs with the same stuff. Mind you, it is very rare...weeks or months
apart. It's just that tonight, and over the last two or three days, I
had a spate of them.
No plugins.
What should be the ideal conversion for aac?
