Very surprising but unmistakeable. The bird was feeding on the now scarce

Island on Lake Victoria this morning.

Lake Victoria is in the middle of Stratford. From Ontario Street (Hwy 7,8) head
north on Waterloo Street. Just before the first bridge turn right on Lakeside
The Little Blue Heron was still present this evening at the same location in
the containment pond near Harrington.
It moved around and wasn't in view all the time but it did eventually come
fairly close to the berm and gave everyone good looks.

There was a single Ross's Goose flying with 5 mallards along the Avon River
beside Devon Park this morning. At a distance it looked like a domestic duck,
being the same size as the mallards. As the flock moved closer I saw the black
wingtips and then the short stubby bill.

The Smith's Longspur was back in its usual place on Concession A at Long Point
at 11:30 AM this morning. It was feeding alone beside the road about 200m west
of Hwy 59.

The Stratford wastewater plant is at the west end of West Gore Street in SW
Stratford. From the Perth County Health Unit parking lot walk up the hill
through the conifers and you can look over the active treatment ponds.

A Merlin dropped in, picked up a peep and continued on its way. Within a

morning, moving among the conifers. They have been seen seen in the area for

There was a single Lesser Black-backed Gull in with a couple of hundred Herring
Gulls at 'Lake Downie' in Stratford this morning. Lake Downie is the local name
for the new storm water pond on the south side of Lorne Avenue. From Ontario

I met Eric Jeffrey at WPWL this morning. He had scoped out lots of good
shorebirds. There was a Hudsonian Godwit that showed then disappeared twice, 2
Long-billed Dowitchers, 4 White-rumped Sandpipers, at least a dozen
Black-bellied Plover along with American Golden Plover, Dunlin, both

Harald Scholz and I spent a productive morning at West Perth Wetlands. When we
arrived there were lots of shorebirds in the first cell next to the parking
lot. Most numerous were Lesser Yellowlegs and Killdeer along with lower
numbers of Greater Yellowlegs, Least Sandpiper, Pectoral Sandpi
Harald Scholz and I spent a couple of hours at West Perth Wetlands this
afternoon. The vegetation around the cells is lush and tall this year, and the
cells have plenty of water in them with only a small amount of beach. There was
a single Short-billed Dowitcher, about 10 Lesser Yellowlegs,
ut it was huge with a 2+
foot wingspan, long tail, big head and a reddy-brown top side. At first I
thought Whipporwill but this bird was too large, was distinctly red-brown and
had very little white anywhere. My heart was beating fast as I realised this
was a Chuck-will's widow.

This morning there was a single Merlin, likely a female, on the north side of
Lake Victoria in Stratford. The bird was sitting in the top of a willow tree
attracting the ire of local nuthatches and chickadees. Hopefully it will stick

This morning I heard and SAW a Yellow-billed Cuckoo at Wildwood. It was in a
wet thicket area beside a trail along the north side of Wildwood Lake. Ken
Clarke had seen and heard one about 0.5 km away yesterday morning, so there may
be a few yellow-bills in the area.

I saw a single Fox Sparrow in the TJ Dolan Area near the feeders on the north
side of the Avon River. Through the frequent flurries I also found Brown
Creeper, Hooded Merganser, siskins, redpolls, and over 50 robins.

About noon today there were 3 Glaucous and 1 Great Black-backed Gulls among the
scores of Herring Gulls in the fields near the mink farm(?) on Road 125 north
of St Mary's. Along with the gulls were 2 Rough-legged Hawks and 1 Red-tailed
Hawk.

The dark gull that I had identified as a California Gull is still on Lake
Victoria. I have seen it each day since Thursday. It is however a Lesser
Black-backed Gull. It has a light eye and looks similar to the drawing in
Sibley 2000 on page 225.
