The Pathfinder (VW) diesel is a single overhead cam design, so it needs a
belt or chain to drive the camshaft off the crankshaft.
Most diesels use pushrods and the camshaft is in the block, not in the
cylinder head.

My Universal is a Kubota diesel that has been marinized, Like a Beta. I’ve
discovered that almost anything that is not a specific part of the conversion
(like the raw water pump or the heat exchanger) is pretty much available from a
Kubota tractor dealer – and there are a lot of them.
