I just made the decision to replace the stuffing in my existing box (original)
rather than to get a dripless box. The surveyor I used when I bought the boat
told me not to use a dripless box due to vibration in my shaft. I have an 18" 2

Hello Listers,
I need to address a leaking stuffing box on my 30-2.
Recently, I found this product - Duramax Ultra.

The brochure sounds like what I need. Anyone using this stuff?
That was me who suggested air in the racor. I had similar problems and
continue to. My solution was to simply make venting the filter easier and
more effective. If I vent every month or two then not enough air ever
accumulates to cause problems.

RE: packing - you may have too much in the stuffing box. Our 34 has a 1
inch shaft. We use 3/16 Teflon packing (much better than flax). 3 strands
cut at 45 degrees with joints staggered. Works just fine. Takes a few
adjustments to get the correct drip - none when at rest a few drops per

Racor 500 fuel filter tops can warp over time allowing air to leak in. If
the T-handle is over-tightened, it can cause the top to become concave.
Lay a flat across the underside of the top and see if the center is

Someone with more knowledge than I should help you with this but you should
understand that traditional stuffing boxes are designed to leak. The water
keeps the unit lubricated and cool. I now have what they call a dripless
stuffing box which is a completely different design to accomplish the sa

Good luck. My shaft was radially warped, so not fixable. Plus the strut was
not oriented correctly to the shaft log, which is why I really had the
vibration. Nothing that $5k wouldn't fix.

Pete,
I’ve used it — good stuff. I’ve never packed the box myself, but the mechanics
I’ve used use that.
There’s no way to determine the life span of the material — too many factors
like the amount of engine use, RPMs, etc. You should make it a habit to check
for drips on a regular basis.
