What gcc version is shipped with LM 7.2? When I say gcc --version, it shows
me 2.95.3! while the latest stable is 2.95.2 (correct me if i am wrong)
also, if i check under /usr/bin, the actual gcc executable is gcc-2.95.2
What is all this?

I am having problems with correct memory detection on two machines. Both
machines have 1.5GB and LM8.0 on both of these detects 1.0GB. On one of the
machines, 7.2 was installed earlier and it detected 1.5GB correctly.
1. ASUS K7V (VIA) Motherboard
2. SGI Zx10 workstation

If I check permissions for audio, they are like this:

When I leave my machine for 7-8 hours, my monitor goes into power saving
and never comes back. When I looked at the log files, I saw a kernel panic!

Mandrake's web-site has a great tutorial on getting u're IDE CD to run
under 7.0.. follow that and things will be fine. (u need to set u're IDE cd
as a SCSI).
For buring, I find gtoaster and kisocd really good! kisocd is really good
to make quick copies and CDs.. use gtoaster for music CDs. I wis

I can burn CDs on my machine only as root. Thats very unconvenient. How to
let any user burn CDs? Maybe this should be default in the system.

do a "df -k" on the prompt... this usually happens when you run out of disk
space..
If you are unable to boot coz X crashes, say "linux 3" at LILO prompt.. if
u are using grub, press "e" to edit the command and add 3 in front of
vmlinuz.

this is really rediculous.. I hate mandrake for 7.1.. I had fallen in love
with Mandrake with their 7.0 release.. and 7.1 is really crappy when it
comes to installation.. there are things that don't work and machines that
run perfectly with 7.0 but don't install/run 7.1.. and there is that crappy
mandrake is my choice of Linux too.. and thats why I want to see it
growing.
I reason I am little bit pissed off with mandrake is that upgrade to 7.1
from 7.0 takes 12 hrs and installation takes 1-1&1/2 hrs .. whereas 7.0 was
done in 15-20 mints.. i dont' know the reasons..

Firstly look into your bios if you can set u're on-board sound card to SB..
if not, then go to www.alsa-project.org and download the sound drivers and
install them.. Read the README and INSTALL files carefully
use vorbis file format.. its the first open source audio format which also
supports streaming (final 1.0 will be released by the end of the month)

After rebooting my machine (had to move the machine at a diff place), I am
not able to mount my cdrom drive. I hda problems with supermount and so i
disabled it and then I played a lot with autofs.. I dont' know if that is
causing this problem..

Use alsa drivers from www.alsa-project.org.. they have a module for AC97

they work with AC97 fine.. also check if u're motherboard has SB
emulation.. in that case u're current SB drivers will work too!

this is the Nth time that someone is complaining that 7.0 detected a piece
of hardware and 7.1 didn't.. 7.0 installed flawlessly and 7.1 didn't... why
does this happen?

my amd, autofs and supermount never worked.. I had emailed this list about
my supermount problems.. came to know its not good.. so removed it.. later
tried autofs adn amd.. none of them worked.. so after that i was doing raw
mount so far.. and suddenly it stopped working too!

I installed a scroll mouse (logitech). For that I made modifications to
XF86Config file and started imwheel.. But my problem is that it jumps
(seems to emulate pgup-pgdn rather than up-dn) in all applications (other
than NS.. where it seems to work ok).

Yes.. I did it.. its very simple to install.. The drivers are basically
OpenGL library files.. so just replace your current ones with the new ones
(just take care of symlinks) and you are done!
The performance is ofcourse much better! Check this site :

You can configure LILO to not wait for prompt atall (unless you keep the
left shift key pressed) and that will act as a direct Linux boot!

this dosn't mean that GDB won't work.. it still works fine on ur'e code!
try the latest alsa drivers from www.alsa-project.org.. they'll most
certainly work!
just read the instructions and carefully follow them and u shld be able to
get u're card working!
