I don't think file size is necessarily the problem if the problem is the same one I'm seeing. I've had a file open in one session and read perfectly, then in a different session have the file open and only say "PDF static text" and not read anything. I'm not sure how to replicate this, however.

Press CMD-Shift-A to open the Applications folder. then press U to go to Utilities, and open that. There you'll find an app called Disk Utility, launch it. In the app, you'll see an option that says repair disk emissions. Press Enter, and you're golden. It did solve my lag problem, too, so
