Actually, you should be able to use drives up to 4 GB in SCSI Target Mode
just fine on these 'Books. And that's 4 REAL gigabytes, or 4,294,967,296
bytes. Which means that a drive *advertised* as 4.3 GB might well be just
fine.
YMMV, of course.
It seems to vary indeed, from the thread from Thurs
separate platter of its own within the hard drive, is my date safe in
the event of a bad crash? In other words, does a hard disk crash
affect ALL the platters in a hard drive, and if not, then it's safe
to use a hard drive as its own backup to forgo buying a separate CD
or Zip drive?

matter what, not as RAM. It's either a PC drive or a Mac drive on the

I'd like to reinstall OS 8.1 but can't get the PB to see the external
drive. I'm using a SCSI dock for the connection, but all I see the the
SCSI symbol (a floating square with the number 2 inside it). The drive

Well, I finally got my memory module so I can take this computer up to 64MB.
Now I want to install it along with the Enet/Video card. However, I see that
the Focus card came with no instructions about how to install, other
than--have this board installed by your Apple authorized dealer. Does

Easier to find CD-Sunrise (freeware) which works with most non-Apple SCSI
in the expansion chasis.
The IORegistryExplorer application identifies the cards in
the expansion chasis correctly, Apple System Profiler does
not list them.

Even if the drivers aren't working you should get a link light when you
first hook the cables up, I think. It would then go OUT perhaps but at
first connect to a powered up it should work.
Sounds like the card is dead to me, or you still have wrong cables. You
were going to try and see if you
the problem... turn if off! :) and the
problem should go away.
Do make the change with everything powered off.

It seems you have a dock that is either switchable, or you have a
dedicated SCSI dock adapter, not a regular powerbook SCSI adapter.
The switchable adapter, when in dock mode, turns your powerbook into
just a disk drive, with a icon marching on the screen to tell you
what the SCSI ID is,

You can get the same card with native Mac drivers and a big endian
(well big anyway) dongle for $30 or so if you buy a Farallon Mac
PCMCIA card, for a lot more money.

You can try, but I don't know why you'd want to.
I findthe interface enhancements in 7.5.5 make up for the fact that
the 68k CPUs run a bit slower using it instead of 7.1.3.

After turning of WEP, and restarting my base station, it all worked...and
with version 7.2 of the drivers...then turned of WEP on my 2400 with the
skyline and that worked...NOW...my next question is, by disabling WEP, what

Despite Jobs' death bell for anything lower than 10.2, 8.6 is still a
current system. Most software available today requires it as a minimum.
I ran 8.0, then 8.5/6 on 48 MB for years. Even with a processor upgrade (now
cheaper on eBay than they used to be), you take a significant speed and RAM
8.6 has weird Quicktime issues though; only workaround is to go back
to 8.1 or up to 9.x.
What do you mean? I've been running 8.6 on several machines since
it's release... QT works great. I've used QT4 and QT5 w/ no problems.

You should be able to take the external floppy case apart; and then the
internal mechanism is the same for many powerbook floppies, just the case
holding them is different. It might be that is the case for pb100's. I
recall that it is, but don't think

came with a floppy drive cartridge but no CDROM cartridge. It's running OS
8.0 which I'd like to update to 8.1 and install some other software but I

I am wondering if this is a replacement logic board or if Apple simply made
a hap-hazard attempt to repair the joint when it previously went through the
REA.

logic Board and the one they used to replace with in the REA?

Thanks, but I do have File Exchange installed on the Laptop. But, perhaps
it is not working correctly.
The laptop HANGS when I try to format it for DOS, and as I said when I put
the camera formatted card into the laptop.
I do install the card into the adaptor and then both into the PC slot.

But a printer with a sheet feeder of some sort would be... handy. I have
been known to cut diagonal lines even with a paper cutter, never mind
feeding every single sheet straight :)
And of course a mac serial port would be even better, so I would not have
to pack around the Printpack cable...
I just put 8.6 on a 5300cs with a rather anemic 24 megs RAM (1 meg VM, no
ramdoubler or speeddoubler, but I may try them later); System takes up 9
megs, which is better than I thought it would- and that's the initial
install, I can still pare extensions down.

A shop here has a whole bunch of powerbook adapters, likely that I could
resell, but I've had difficulty figuring out which goes with what
powerbook- based only on the M#.

system/preferences folder and trashed finder prefs, general prefs, etc.

Maybe try something similar with your setup... In your case, I'd start by
trashing the startup disk prefs :)

External CDs should work...but I agree for whatever reason my 540c is
pickier than any other mac or powerbook I've used about its external
If you don't have Stuffit, you'll need to format a Mac disk on your Mac,
then use a program such as HFV Explorer or TransMac or the like to copy it
to the Mac floppy. While copying it will decode the file.
This is, of course, assuming the file will fit on a floppy.
And then you will find out

not, you'll have to get them, best solution is likely from a network boot
disk that you can find from Apple or jagshouse.com.

be annoying, I could end up formatting data or disks that
only work on my machine :) (could be handy for work related stuff,
sometimes, I guess- I gave you the data on floppy...)
