to partition the hard drive do you have to make sure that the first
partition is no larger than 8g. I think that's right!

not much. SO far it has been quite as stable as 8.6
and my apps seem to load just as quickly as they did
in 8.6. Most importantly for me, my INternet Browsing
speed is now what I would expect it to be from a cable

You might check to make sure the 3400's Ethernet driver is installed. I don't
recall the name of it (somebody help me out), but it's an extension that
allows the ethernet to run.
Check your TCP/IP to see the IP Address. If it's showing a 169.xxx.xxx.xx
number, then your machine

places. Using location manager, I set up the choices.
If you have the free PPP lurking somewhere, make sure
your modem selection is set to generic. Make sure
AppleTalk is off. Have you pressed the reset button?

This is not true. The battery that comes with the 3500
(Li-Ion) is not a higher voltage than the Li-Ion

First, are you completely certain that it doesn't have one already? Most
3400s do. The port is in the back. Mine showed up without the right software
to find or use the modem, but once I got the software right the modem works
beautifully.

The 8.6 CD I have has got both an updater and a full installer on it. Running Norton
and TechTools is a good idea though as it's always nice to install on a HD that is
known good.

My CD does indeed have a full restore option as well
as a patch option as Tom pointed out earlier.
It was also definately a bad hard drive... I hadn't
taken it out until now. I knew the drive was bad as
soon as I removed it from the case. In all my years
of working with laptop hard drives

disassemble-reassemble instructions for the 3400 for those with the
courage to undertake it. I can't recall what the URL is, but if you
