the collisions stopped,or really dropped off.
my throughput didnt really improve much :(

closed the tape position stays put. When using /dev/st0, the tape is

First off, why are you asking the same question, twice?
In any event, the nst0 is the non-rewind device. That allows you to
easily write multiple backup/tar files to the same tape.

It appears that your ISP has implemented a POP-before-SMTP strategy, to
keeep spammers from relaying mail through their servers. IMO your ISP
has taken a good step toward reducing the flow of spam in the world.
That having been said, you simply need to telnet to your ISP's mailserver
