Not sure why you wouldn't use dBp for this -- has an excellent batch
function, first class conversion routines and a pretty easy interface.
The reference version (you have to pay a modest amount) will convert
very quickly using multiple processors.

the files, and then recopying the files to the SS file location, it does
seem as if the small thumbnail in folder view is being picked up only
from the mp3 or flac file, but this makes little sense.

BluRay, and you can get ripping software specifically for capturing
audio from DVD/BR. You might be best served by going the route of
buying an internal drive along with an enclosure, as suggested above.
