Would it be possible to change AV com check to only alert if the definition is
more than one version old? I am thinking specifically of McAfee which uses
sequential dat versions.

I should have said to show down only when 2 versions old.

You may want to consider using a remote agent for monitoring the servers in
your DMZ that way you do not have to open NetBios.

You were commenting on Windows 7 and the console switch. Which would be
beneficial mostly for the desktop interaction which does not work on Windows 7.
I made an invalid assumption based on your FYI.

on the remote Windows NT or 2000 system. To do this,
you should specify a
user name and password for each of the checks.
If the host is part of a domain, you should include the domain name with the
user name as in:
domain_name\user_name.

I have installed the av com check on a computer running Mcafee AntiVirus Plus
2010. I have set the check to use McAfee in the com check. I get version on
web (5848) but no info on local version. Any idea how to get this working or
what file the com check is looking for.

The consumer version of Mcafee that I have installed puts the definition in
hklm\software\McAfee\AvEngine\AVDatVersion
It is a binary key. There is also an EngineVersionMajor and an
EngineVersionMinor key in that same path.

Their are MANY open source products that do not charge for the license at all
and charge a LARGE fee for support. I think anyone who needs 24/7 support
would understand that it does not come cheap. That being said I would not and
do not need 24/7 support.

issue often manifests itself in other checks. I would reboot the machine that
you are checking and see if the problem returns.
