I dowloaded OO 2.0 Beta for Linux, to install it onto my Gentoo...
I unpacked the tar.gz and tried to install the RPMS with
rpm -Uvih *rpm
but it failed giving me some errors such as these:

slides? The little pictures on the left are ok, but I like the tabs better.

You may have to explain a little further. When you say get the
incorrect ones out - what do you mean. In OOo speak references are
termed as bibliography stored in the bibliography database.
Have you inserted references into the text body which you now want to remove?

untar-zipped them and then ran dpkg -i *1.9.82*deb.
OOo-1.9.82 was installed alongsize the older 1.9.79 and seemed to work.
Afterwards I removed 1.9.79 and

I can't seem to replicate your issue. My table columns stay where they
are. You may have been advised of this in the past, but OOo isn't
really the best for creating web sites.
My recommendation has always been Nvu (www.nvu.com) for that type of thing.
