Check out 13-2007 or 2010 section 20.3 to see if any of the special retail protection schemes might fit.

Senior Engineer - FMO Special Projects Seattle Fire Department Ph 206 386 9865 Fax 206 615 1068 [email protected] -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Daniel Wilder Sent: Thursday, August 16, 2012 15:57 To: [email protected] Subject: RE: solid shelves in auto parts stores The NAPA configuration that I had the pleasure or taking on was 24" or 30" deep back to back shelves up to 16'(storage on the top shelf put me up to 18' total height) with an intermediate open grate mezzanine (essentially two 8' storage racks on top of each other) and no flue space. Aisles about 30" wide (5 or 6 aisles) and 50 or so feet deep with a steep stair in the back corner. Pre-engineered rack/mezzanine structure. Besides the obvious configuration issues, the shelving was setup so that any shelf could line up with the adjacent shelf giving you a 4'-5' wide by a minimum 8' long shelf. Final design (PE sealed, AHJ pre-approved, Owner and Tenant Insurance companies in the loop) included making the tenant install treated plywood over the open metal grating (separating the two storage heights, placing sprinkler lines down each aisle at a staggared 6-7' spacing (they advised us that the top shelf of the lower tier may not have product on it creating a cold solder issue). Lower design was to misc back-to-back shelf storage to 8', EH1 or 2 (I can't remember). Overhead system was designed with the higher storage height to 12' all with 286 heads. This was a strip mall (billards place and a pool store in the same building), luckily the suite was next to the riser room and allowed us to upsize only a little bit of main and all the BL. We did remove and reinstall the overhead BL for the tighter spacing and tied it all back into the existing OH2 grid at the common wall. A lot of extra work for such a small tenant space... -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of Greg McGahan Sent: Thursday, August 16, 2012 3:27 PM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: solid shelves in auto parts stores Nobody here with experience on the AHJ or Engineering side of the following stores: O-reilly's Auto Zone Advanced Auto Parts These are three very common retail outlets with similar arrangements.
