Jeez, I feel sorry for those viewers. I had a job 10+ years ago
where the advertising log at MTV broke down. They sat me in front of
a screen and made me fast forward through MTV to the commercials,
then note down what the commercials were for and how long they were.
Then I had to fast forward to the next commercials. So all I saw all

[videoblogging] Clipser.com

2007-03-22 Thread amumuaam
Hi Folks

There went another new video portal online over the last weekend
called Clipser.

You can can surf on the homepage using the www.clipser.com URL.

And additionally, I want to quote some of the Clipser Bonus program,
to provide you a little info about how Clipser wants to share success
with the Clipser Community.

What we really want is to let you participate in our success. Upload
new, funny, exciting, rare or simply cool clips onto our platform. For
each uploaded clip, you get Clipser Dollars™. But not only for
uploading clips but every time a third person watches your clips you
get more Clipser Dollars™. So keep in mind – the more popular and
cooler your clips are, the richer you become!

In the case, clipser.com is successfull, the company will be sold and
all the Clipser Dollars will be changed in real cash.

Hopefully I'll meet you there.

I love a bit of friendly spamming from people announcing useful

What do you think a Clipser Dollar TM will be worth when Clipser is
bought? Flashing Pumpkin already has 1800 Clipser Dollars TM.
Are there any cool social aspects to the site that compensate for the
spiritual pain and loneliness of not becoming very rich?
Do you think people will actually believe that they'll get any real

[videoblogging] Feedburner spike?

2007-03-22 Thread Rupert
Has everyone else had an increase in Feedburner stats?

They changed their algorithms last week.

I don't look at stats very much, and Feedburner stats almost never,
but I saw an announcement from them about changing their algorithms,
checked my feed and indeed there had been at least a 50% increase in
subscribers in just the last few days.

There's no other reason for this for me, since I haven't posted
anything and I have no more links listed in Technorati.

They say they've retired their Maximum algorithm in favour of their
more complex Cluster algorithm, which has shown itself to be a more
accurate way to count subscriptions, taking into account elusive feed
aliases and better reflecting the reality of how many subscribers are
accessing your media. To clarify, any increases in subscription
numbers aren't new subscribers, rather it reflects an improvement
to how we calculate data for your feed.

But how much trust can one put in the new figures, given that the old
figures were so wrong??

It doesn't really affect me, but I thought it might be of interest to
some here whose stats are tied into their revenue.

Well. Honest answer: We don't know exactly. It all depends on how
successfull Clipser will be and how much traffic the community
produces. If I look at some clips elsewhere in the internet with more

There are all the cool aspects you also find on other clip sharing

Greetings,

Your privacy statement seems to be blank and I can find no information

Th idea is interesting, it certainly takes the sting out of the tail
of users watching a site they helped build get sold for lots of money
and then they get nothing.

On the otherhand it sounds awfully similar to dotcom era companies
that gave 'free shares' to users, which only had any real value if
they ever floated.

Re: [videoblogging] NBC researching brain activity

2007-03-22 Thread Adam Quirk, Wreck Salvage
I had a very similar job. We stuck new spots in old shows, showed them to a
group of respondents, and administered surveys afterwards to test the
effectiveness of the commercial. One of my duties was to paste the new
commercials in over the top of last week's batch. So I would fast-forward
through 10 minutes or so of a discarded ABC pilot from 1987 about a female
mayor's office in a big city, cut in a commercial for Axe body spray (not
that, but something similar), then fast-forward to the next commercial
break.

When I would leave for lunch, I would get a headache as soon as I stepped
out the front door from all the natural light and non-fast-forwarded
reality. That lasted about 6 months.

Interesting thing I learned from that job is that almost every big brand
commercial you see has gone through similarly rigorous testing for several
months before they actually air it. They test the first draft, make
changes, test again, make changes, on and on until they get they're desired
% of positive responses from the testing groups.

Think about that next time you're forced to sit through a shitty commercial.

Long live TiVo.

It never occurred to me until I read your survivor story that maybe I
was sick because my brain was rejecting reality. I always assumed
that it was a delayed rejection of the relentless fast-forwarded MTV,
which only kicked in once it stopped. But actually, maybe you're
right - I'd become conditioned to hell, and suddenly seeing all the
real people on Oxford Street at rush hour was like stepping onto the
dock after a month at sea. That's *more* depressing.

But maybe not as depressing as the idea of all those ads being tested
so much.

Long live Tivo indeed, but I dread to think what subliminal horror
they will unleash upon us when we all stop watching regular commercials.

Hi Rupert

Do you have file type restrictions or server problems?

File type restrictions. Try it with mpg/flv files. But I'm not
satisfied with this issue, so there will be some updates in the near
future.

Could you make an Uploading message which was more reassuring that
 something is actually happening.

I'll put in a request for that.

Hi, Me to I tried a Wav file and got this error

And then it wiped out all the data I entered, so I would have to have

to try a different file type, no way I am no techie, Amu I wish you luck but
this is all over my head. Ed.

2007-03-22 Thread Rupert
Cool. You need to make really clear on your upload page which file
types you accept - you say mpg - presumably mp4? It's my experience
that your competitors take all sorts of files. Also, if people only
have a mov or wmv or avi file to upload to you and you're only
accepting mp4 and flv, you need to tell them how to get them
converted to your files, with a clearly linked help section. There
are many ways to do this - I guess you need to work out which route
to recommend to your users.
Best,

[videoblogging] Research into Videoblogging and Videoblogs - call for help

2007-03-22 Thread trine bjørkmann berry
Hello,

Some of you might know (of) me already, but for those of you who
don't, I am a researcher in Media Film at the University of Sussex,
UK, and am currently writing my thesis on Videoblogging.

Part of my study is conducting interviews with videobloggers, and I am

spare a little of your time to tell me about your site. If you agree
to help, I'll mail you a few questions off list. Your answers can be
as long or short as you like. You could really help me by spending as
little as 10 minutes telling me about your experiences. In anything I

your identity.

I hope you will help. Sorry to have wasted your time if you're not interested.

This will be interesting to watch, of course.

A couple of comments:

1) US only? They only mentioned US. As we all know, online video is
a lot more than just the US.
2) They are calling this a strategic alliance rather than a joint
venture, probably to try to avoid being labeled the next Movielink,
but they will have to prove to everyone that they can operate
differently.
3) ubiquitous distribution? - also followed by Post-launch, sites
affiliated with founding companies, including iVillage and IGN, will
also have the opportunity to become distribution partners. I'm just
not seeing it as ubiquitous - will all video feeds be available
via MediaRSS with enclousures? Will I be able to download to my iPod?

Just my initial thoughts... still lots of question marks, obviously.

Agree with your observations. Its hard to tell from the press release
but I assume they may well lmit some or all of it to US only due to
the complexities of international media rights, for example that many
of these US series are shown on UK TV much later, and the UK companies
that pay a lot for the broadcast rightss arent likely to be chuffed if
the stuff was already available to watch online first.

This international angle is one area where forward-thinking new media
could have the upper hand for ages, if traditional media cant escape
the shackles of the international broadcast rights marketplace.

Re: [videoblogging] Feedburner spike?

2007-03-22 Thread Andrew
I noticed a spike too. My blog at http://puppetvision.blogspot.com gets
a minimum of 500 unique visitors each day and yet for the longest time
Feedburner claimed I only had 20-30 RSS subscribers which seemed low. I
know not everyone uses RSS, but since they changed the algorithm I'm now
at about 130 RSS subscribers which seems more in line with my traffic stats.

To be fair, I don't think the problem is Feedburner's fault. Until
recently they were not able to pull accurate numbers from many of the
popular RSS services like My Yahoo!

- Andrew

Rupert wrote:

[videoblogging] Re: Dirty Diaper Diaries experiment on Ning

2007-03-22 Thread Andy Carvin
So it looks like we might try a compromise. We're now thinking about
keeping dirty diaper diaries where it is, at
www.dirtydiaperdiaries.com, and linking heavily from it to
http://diaries.ning.com, so vlog visitors can post their own videos
and discussion threads. Neither of us were satisfied with Ning's blog
functionalities - they don't allow categories, for one thing. So
hopefully this will work; I'll start embedding relevant links in both
sites and adjust the CSS so they're seamless, and we'll see how it goes...

post video comments. I was experimenting with
kickapps.com to do this but wasn't happy with the
results. So now I'm playing around with Ning instead.
It's a hosted social network rather than widget-based,
so I can't incorporate it into our MT blog, but its
social networking tools are so user-friendly I'm now
thinking of dropping MT entirely and using Ning to
 drive the whole site.

Here's what I've set up so far:

Does this seem like a good way to go? For five bucks a

just relocate dirtydiaperdiaries.com to go here

How green is video-blogging itself?

Do personal computers and video cameras grow on trees? Or, are they
made out of petro-chemicals?

What is the carbon footprint of the equipment used to product a
videoblog? Does that include the internet infra-structure?

Where can I buy carbon credits to cover the electricity used in the
making and distribution of my video blog? What is the
carbon-unit-per-minute-of-videoblog rate? Could I win a prize on
Vlogging for Dollars to cover it?

What if, instead of video blogging, we made drawings on recycled paper
in flip-book format and handed the flip-books to our friends, or
left them laying around on the counter down at the diner? That sounds
really green. Lower distribution numbers surely, but with greater
impact on the viewer?

And what about digital-smoke-signal vlogging?

Well...

* There's a company offering wind-powered web hosting. We may transition
Greentime to them in the future, depeding on a few things.

This group tolerates plenty of open discussion but it is not the universal

It happens and thats ok. But my message was intended to discourage the back

Feel free to discuss the concept of 'redeeming virtual dollars earned if

[videoblogging] Re: Green Vlogging?

2007-03-22 Thread Steve Watkins
I applaud greentime and anything similar.

Computers, video cameras the net are not particularily green or
sustainable.

So they are part fo the problem, but they have a place in helping
massively with sustainability etc, if they can be used to eliminate
even more wasteful uses of fossil fuels.

For example I expect downloading music or video instead of it being
manufactured onto cd or dvd and then shipped physically across the
world, and then me driving to a shop to buy it.

Likewise if you can use video on the internet as an alternative to
driving or flying to meet someone, computers the net start to look
like they could be a good chunk of the solution.

The electrical energy use of your camera computer arent very high
compared to a large television or heating or cooking or cooling with
electric, but if its on for a lot of hours per day and isnt set to go
into standby, or better yet switched off at the wall, it will add up
to a significant amount. The electrical useage of servers and other
net infrastructure certainly adds up, one day we may have to move away
from this model somewhat and have far more 'not always available' peer
to peer stuff with mesh networks.

I wills struggle to calculate the carbon footprint created by the
manufacture of computers etc, but I know it will be pretty bad. Just
looking at the chips, rather a lot of energy is used to get silicon
pure enough for the job. Lifetime of the devices is a real important
thing here, the cycles are much to short at the moment, I do not
expect the current pace of pseudochange can be maintained for the next
50 years.

I do not take it foregranted that humans will be capable of mass
manufacture of computers in a hundred years time, for all I know they
may just end up being a temporary tool to make the slide away from
globalisation and mass production more palatable.

I have a cheap device that sits between the socket and the device, and
measures how much energy is used. My backup plan for vlogweek in the
event of not coming up with anything else, is to do some video
involving this and a few other things Ive been mucking with in the
name of sustainability.

Returning briefly to how much power your own part of the setup, the
computer and camera, use, it is feasible to run a laptop off a fairly
small solar or wind setup. Theoretically, human pedal power could also
provide enough watts. As a laptop typically uses less than 100W, this
could be compared to one old type 100W lightbulb, so if you have old
wasteful bulbs in your house you could start by changing them to cover
the energy consumption of your computers. Solid state hard drives and
LED-backlit screen promise some further computer energy efficiency
gains in future but Im fairly sure all these things are wiped out by
the explosion in cheap large televisions, where the screen size makes
the energy use for lighting rather high.

My biggest fear is that as talk of green sustainable issues reaches
fever pitch, there are going to be so mny things that sound good but
are actually bad. Many of the carbon offsetting programs are murky and
its hard to be sure how much genuine difference they are actually
making. Its no use getting a solar panel if the energy used to make it
is greater than all the energy the device will generate in a lifetime.
And dont even get me started on biofuels.

Cheers

The fever pitch, in a lot of ways, is already here, and it has been for a

[videoblogging] Re: Green Vlogging?

2007-03-22 Thread Steve Watkins
Well I wasnt meaning to suggest that solar panels actually fail the
equation I gave them, jsut that we always need to probe a little
deeper to make sure the solutions arent more costly to the world than
the original problem.

Its a time when enthusiasm is needed to stir the masses into action,
and so some git like me pointing out that all that solar energy isnt
free, and it will take a certain number of years for the panel to pay
for itself in terms of carbon use, may be unwelcome. But on the
otherhand it may help those who are skeptical about the 100% happy joy
joy green hype greenwashing that you point out is already here.

I was born in 1975 and the energy/environmental crisis is at least
that old. Its funny how much it was talked about back then, spurred on
by events such as arab oil embargo's, and how it is even reflected in
popular culture such as movies of the time like 'Soyent Green' (sp?)

Anyway as a kid I remember TV adverts telling me to switch the lights
off when I left the room, although this was more for energy
cost/shortage reasons than the planet melting. Then there was the
'ozone layer' stuff in the 80's which finally got sorted, but again
when I search the net it turns out people had identified the problem
decades earlier. But somewhere along the way, the green energy stuff
had a decade or so long rest, althoug other green issues such as
organic foods and pollution reduction continued. Now in the last few
years the energy part of things has reached feverpitch, and here in te
UK most of the media and politicians are going on about this stuff
nearly every day. Personally I dont disbelieve the climate change
science but suspect it is energy considerations which are driving the
current race towards sustainability.

As I mentioned before, carbon offsetting is one of the areas I suspect
is not helping as much as advertised, and is proving far too easy an
option for carbon offenders to use to clain that 'they are carbon
neutral' (Al Gore is a topical example). The other day a tabloid
newspaper in the UK went through the bins of the leader of the
opposition political party in thsi country, David Cameron, who talks
green a lot, and discovered some stuff that was recyclable being
thrown out with the trash. When politicians appear on TV show where
the audience ask questions, they are getting attacked for their own
lifestyles which inevitably involve a lot of flying. So far the media
are doing an OK job of pointing out hipocracy, another DDavid Cameron
incident involved the fact he was cycling to work, but then it turned
out some large car was driving behind him carring his paperwork. He
talked a lot about getting a wind turbine on his house, but so far as
I know it hasnt happened, partly because they figured it would be a
security risk, his house would be easy to identify.

Still its easier to spot this sort of thing with individuals more than
with companies, there are all sorts of ways of doing something green
whilst carrying on making things bad in other areas.

Business certainly uses a lot of energy, Ive found that any of my
basic energy saving at home tactics are dwarfed by just gong round
turning various things off at work before the weekend.

Disposal of computers and other electronic devices is another part of
the jigsaw. Again its not good, certainly in the EU manufacturers are
now being made responsible for the cost of disposal of the goods they
manufacture, once they reach end of life. This is in part due to
llimits increased costs on landfill disposal. Recycling in general
is improving but I sometimes see disturbing pictures on the TV of
waste that has been sent from here to India or China, where poor
people melt it down and expose themselves to many harmful chemicals :(

Hi Edd66,

Well it seems that you have basic needs so you don't need the high
priced toys.

You could to quite well with the entry level Canon, Panasonic or JVC
DV tape camcorders. For the set up that you are describing they all
will do a bang up job for under $250-$450 depending on model and features.

Now if you need that external mic you might want to look at:

Panasonic GV500
Panasonic GV300
Canon ZR800

CNet has a list of camcorders with mic imputs. Read the specs
carefully to make sure it has an external jack and hopefully a
headphone jack.
http://reviews.cnet.com/4566-6500_7-0.html?sa=500871;

Cheap does not be bad but there may be trade offs you rather not make.
Take you time and take you are heart out of it. It is easy to be
seduced by a good looking camcorder. You want a high functional
camcorder at a price you can live with for the next two years.

This part I don't understand:

video will be converted to WAV files. You are going to convert .wav
files into an audio file? For a podcast? You're going to extract the
audio for another purpose?

Or did you mean .wmv?
