FA spokesman Adrian Bevington revealed: "When any player is selected for an England
squad, we arrange insurance cover for their clubs. This covers a player's weekly
salary for up to 104 weeks should they remain injured after incurring an injury on
England duty."

Manchester Utd

Alex Ferguson has doubts over Phil Neville (back) and Nicky Butt
(knee), both of whom pulled out of England's midweek defeat against
Holland. Roy Keane completes a suspension carried over from last
season, but Juan Sebastian Veron is included, despite only returning
from international duty in Argentina on Friday.

Fulham

The Cottagers approach their first Premiership game with no injury
worries, but manager Jean Tigana will be without Portuguese livewire
Luis Boa Morte and defender Rufus Brevett through suspension. New
signings Edwin van der Sar, steed Malbranque, Jon Harley, and
Abdeslam Ouaddou all make the squad.

[17] Mirror on Stam and Fergie meeting
---------------------------------
Posted Friday, August 17, 2001 by bar-knee:
>From the Mirror

'FURIOUS Sir Alex Ferguson read the riot act to Jaap Stam yesterday over his explosive
autobiography. He ordered the giant Dutch defender in for showdown talks before
allowing him to rejoin his Manchester United team-mates for training. Ferguson
demanded that Stam explain his actions after his controversial new book was serialised
in The Mirror. Now he has been forced to scrap a` glitzy book launch next week because
of the furore surrounding his autobiography which has got the whole game talking. Stam
was supposed to officially launch the book, Head to Head, at a special VIP party at
Old Trafford next week.'

well if we were going, hardly VIP...

'But a spokesman for publishers Harper Collins said: "We have had so much publicity
from it already it has been decided a launch wasn't really necessary." In truth,
however, Ferguson warned Stam that the launch would merely inflame the situation
further and has effectively gagged him.

Stam accused Ferguson of "tapping him up," called the Nevillebrothers "busy c***s" and
claimed the manager had told his players to dive in Europe. He also cast doubt over
Dwight Yorke's showbiz lifestyle, blamed the United board for bullying the players out
of competing in the FA Cup and claimed England's No.1 striker Michael Owen was
over-rated.

Fergie was furious to read Stam's comments and gave him a rollickingover the phone
while he was at the Dutch training camp, butyesterday was the first time the pair had
come face-to-face sincethe book was serialised in The Mirror. Stam was given an icy
reception by his teammates when he finally arrived at Carrington fortraining.

The United players have been stunned by The Mirror's serialisationalthough Stam tried
to limit the damage by phoning Gary Neville to warn him about his comments. However,
it is his relationship with Ferguson that has suffered the most after he claimed his
manager broke the rules when he signed him from PSV by "tapping him up".

While many people accept that such contact is often made in football it is extremely
rare for a player to make such an admission -especially while still at the club
involved. With Ferguson due to retire in May the slur is the last thing he needed -
especially after recent claims that the United boss made similar contact with Patrick
Vieira and Bixente Lizarazu in the summer.

He will let his star defender off with a severe slap on the wrist and a warning that
the publicising of his book must stop now.'

Strange no mention of apparent anger over the book being serialised in that
anti-United rag...

expected to do a job and I wouldn't have left United if I was not confident of

[13] More from Greening

Posted Friday, August 17, 2001 by bar-knee:
"Sir Alex was not very happy when I said I wanted to leave, buteventually he realised
that at 22 years old I was getting on andneeded to play regularly. United's squad is
so packed full of superstars it became too difficult to get in. Being at Boro with
Steve is pretty similar to life under Sir Alex. The gaffer is going to set out certain
rules for the Boro squad. I don't know what they are yet, but that's the way Sir Alex
runs things. I've come to Boro because of the ambition Steve has for the club. The
biggest change is calling him gaffer rather than Steve. Bringing a trophy here is
definitely a possibility now, but it will take time. The fans have got to be patient
with us, but we need a winning start.

Greening and fellow Boro new boy Mark Wilson say they quit Fergie's regime because
big- money signings like Veron and van Nistelrooy had ruined their prospect of making
a first team breakthrough. Greening said: "Sir Alex was not very happy when I said I
wanted to leave, but eventually he realised that at 22 years old I was getting on and
needed to play regularly.

Jonathon :

"People don't realise how much Steve contributed to United's success. Since I joined
United he took every training session every day. That was the scale of his role. A
lot of the success was down to him because he sorted everything out. Steve will be
badly missed at Old Trafford. He's the best coach I've worked with and it's his
communication skills on the training ground that will be sorely missed. Jim Ryan has
stepped up at United and he's a good coach, but Steve has so many ideas and
techniques. It's quite a turnaround from the day we heard Steve was joining us at
United. A few of the lads were asking 'who's he?' But after a couple of weeks everyone
was thinking 'bloody hell, this guy's a good coach'. Steve's a great talker and
motivator

Only time will tell if he does better than Brian Robson, but he is a more ruthless and
perhaps a stronger person and can come through it. He's definitely got the ability."

[11] More from Fergie on Yorke
---------------------------------
Posted Friday, August 17, 2001 by bar-knee:
"The pressure eventually got to him to the point where he wasn't delivering on the
pitch. So I had a word with him. I'm pleased to say that I've been delighted with him
in pre-season. Only the other day I took him aside to tell him so. Dwight has
addressed one of his problems by being prepared to sacrifice playing for his country.
That's one part of it. The second part is how he looks after himself from here on in.
At our first-day fitness test he was the best. He beat David Beckham - and that's
saying something. He's two yards faster already than he was at any time last season.
Dwight is
training harder than I've ever seen him. Absolutely superb. I can't fault him. Let's
see how Dwight goes from here. He's playing for a new contract. Who would want to
leave?"

---------------------------------
[10] Fergie on the new and improved Dwight Yorke
---------------------------------
Posted Friday, August 17, 2001 by bar-knee:
"I told Dwight at the end of the season that either he had to change
or he had to go. He had had a phenomenal first season and everyone expected him to go
from there. So he has to put last season behind him - and I will, too - simply because
he never gave himself a chance. All the trips to play for Trinidad and Tobago
handicapped him and, on his own admission, he wasn't living the right way. It's not
that Dwight's such a terrible night-lifer. It's more a case of when
he does go out he attracts a lot of attention. And the attention is the worst aspect.
It gets him into the newspapers for the wrong reasons and that creates a lot of
pressure for an individual. There were a lot of times last season when Dwight would
come in and say 'Honest, gaffer, I did nothing wrong' or 'I was never there, gaffer'."

The cancellation of the Stam launch at Old Trafford (and any signings) might have
something to do with a meeting between Fergie and Stam that apparently took place

that the book was allowed to be serialised in THAT paper.

You may also be aware that we have produced a very special - and limited - Fergie

unique memories and stories. We will be selling this Fergie special at the Fulham
game, but to be sure of your copy (stocks are low) you can send a cheque for £2.50 to
cover postage and packing to the above. We do however plan a re-print of this special
if you can't get to the Fulham game. Sportspages (Manchester & London) also have
