Hang in there until the next "mailman-owner" is emailed to you - and don't
delete it as it is your file info that has your unsubcribe info in it. No one,
can do it for you - although some claime the Craft-O-Matic usually works.

[Chevelle-list] Ladder bars

2010-03-27 Thread Don Holloway

Thinking about installing ladder bars on my 65 El Camino. Has 383 stroker (
about 450 hp), 12 bolt read end, beefed up powerglide, 3/4 ton coil springs on
front and rear, 10 " wide BF Goodrich on the rear and 8" on the front. Need

I need a new passenger side bracket for my radiator support but can't
find one for a 1968 anywhere. I didn't see anything on the Year-One or
Goodmark website but NPD sells a pair that fits 1964-1967 models. I

Has anyone had any luck finding these?

I have an all black 1968 Chevelle with an SS hood. I've been thinking
about painting some dark grey/charcoal Camaro-type stripes on it but
have not been able to find a decent picture to see what this might
look like. Has anyone done this to their 68-69 Chevelle? I'd love to
see some pictures if anyone has. Or stop me now if this is a really
bad idea!

Thanks for the help...

2009-01-30 Thread Don Holloway

I hope someone can give me some advice. I am finishing up on my 1965 El Camino.
Going to drop my fresh 450 HP 383 stroker in it. The engine block is a 1976.
High performance World Product heads. What spark plugs would be the best. I
hear that AC Delco are but with headers they are saying two plugs are going to
badly burned. And using shorty plugs on these two isn't that good because of
the performance of shorty's. Any suggestions.

What do you suppose this collection is worth? This collection belongs to
Dennis Albaugh in Ankeny, Iowa, just north of Des Moines.

The personal and private collection consists of 110 + Chevrolet convertibles

all years from 1912 to 1975 and Corvette convertibles from 1953 to 1975.
That is a Chevy convertible from every year of manufacture EXCEPT 1939.. !
- the reason? -

Chevy didn't make a convertible in '39 -- and ended its convertible line in
'75 !

His 'boy toys' include his own 18 hole golf course, copied somewhat after
Augusta National.

He is what you call a REAL Chevy guy, but his passion seems to be
convertibles !

Check out the pictures here;

Sail panels are an ongoing battle for me. I did cut darts in the back. It

Anyway, the glue is another story. With any kind of contact cement it's
important to spray both sides and let it dry a few minutes until it's tacky
rather than wet (the Super 77 can says to bond when it is "aggressively
tacky"). Hold the can 6 to 8 inches away, keep it moving and don't spray too
much. If your headliner material is porous it can ooze out the other side and
it is hard to get off.

Maybe it's a symptom of the fact that I park outdoors in all kinds of weather,
but mine fall down at least once a year, meaning that the material separates
from the boards. I have tried 3M Headliner Adhesive as well as Super 77. Maybe
some day I'll just buy the pre-done ones and get it over with.

Going through stuff in my "car room" today, I came across a 2003 OPG
poster-size calendar w/red 1967 SS Convertible that I had framed in a
2'x3' poster frame years ago.

To make room for some 2009 R/T posters that my brothers got me for
Christmas, I'm going to be unframing this guy and I'm not sure if anyone
would be interested in it and I have no idea it's worth. I'll let it go
for a reasonable offer, as it belongs hanging up in some Chevelle guy's
garage!!!

I can send a photo of it!

P.S. Most of the other 68/69 Chevelle stuff I hd has been cleared out but
I still have a few odds & ends left:

- a few 1/64 diecasts (unopened)
- a couple of frameable prints
- a 1/24 scale (unopened) AMT model
- a couple of Chevelle cloth patches

I guess I'll farm out that stuff to ebay in the next few weeks when I
have time!

There is no such thing as a good chemical rust
remover. Sandblast it or cut it out and replace it. Naval Jelly
works to a point but will not remove deep pitted rust. Should you decide
to try Naval Jelly, you will need some 000 or steel wool and some warm
soapy water to neutralize it. Make sure you prime and paint it if it's in
an inconspicuos area. Don't try to apply one of those self claimed rust
converter coatings on it, they don't work.

brake pedal rod and it has been adjusted all the way out which I'm pretty sure

This is well worth the watch.

This aircraft runs on four chainsaw engines. You can just imagine how
much time, effort, skill and money these guys put into this thing. Just
remarkable! Pay close attention to landing gear retraction and

[Chevelle-list] Re: Gas Prices

2005-08-30 Thread Don
There's the same amount of gas whether the companies charge $2 a gallon or
$4 a gallon. The only thing that really changes is the profit margin. The
oil companies, oil producing countries & the politicians all talk a lot
about supply & demand & crude oil productivity & refinery productivity all
causing the prices to go up & down. But that's not necessarily true. If the
oil producing countries cut down on their crude production or the refineries
cut down on their production, there would be less product to sell but that
doesn't mean it cost them any more or less to make each gallon of gas or
oil. The big companies & oil producing countries are all making record
profits. They charge more money because they can, not because they have too.
The American consumer is being raped by the oil & gas companies. It is
simple greed. If everyone in the oil food chain cut their profits by say
1/3, everyone would still be making a good profit but the price of gas would
go down considerably. They won't do this of course because they don't have
too. I'm all for people & businesses making money, it's what we work for &
what keeps the economy going. But when is it enough? Especially when you're
talking about a necessary commodity such as gas, oil & natural gas. In our
society it is a necessity. Why can't they be happy with making millions
instead of billions? or at least a few billion instead of many billion?
Don't you realize that even if we all gave up our performance cars &
everyone in the country drove cars that got 50mpg, the oil companies would
then charge $6 a gallon so they could keep their profits up. It's not the
oil, it's the greed that's the problem. I remember back many years ago when
they use to tell us to keep your car running when stopped for a train or a
red light because it used more gas to start it than to keep it running. But
many years later they admitted that wasn't really true. They just wanted to
sell more gas. Remember the gas shortages of 1973? Long lines at the pumps,
etc? But once the price jumped up from 40 cents a gallon to over a dollar,
all of a sudden there was no more shortage. There hasn't been a shortage in
the last 30 years. Oil isn't the problem friends, greed is the problem.
Unfortunately it isn't going to change. Of course this is a very simplified
opinion of these problems. This could be discussed for
hours/days/weeks/years on end but I really just wanted to vent some. Sorry
for the long winded tirade.
Don
 -
I agree, our nation has not been conservative when it comes to our
petroleum resources, perhaps even flaunted or wasted them in the past and
present. On the other hand there have been a lot of innovations over the
years that would have provided much better gas mileage, or even taken the
place of some of the gas usage only to have the companies bought out by the
large petroleum companies and put out of business. I have experienced this
with what used to be two different customers I had prior to their being
bought out and closed down. I remember because I had to take back a lot of
product back from them and had to pay back the commissions.

The petroleum companies are going to do everything they can to slow the
introduction of anything that will reduce the gas usage in this country and
their profits. Big money wants even more money and we can do very little
about it by ourselves.

"Mallory HEI" - Plug Wires
Here's some good ones:

If you can believe these stats, they are incredible and among the best
stats I have seen.

http://store.summitracing.com/default.asp?target=partdetail.asp&autofilter=1&Ntt=msd+super+conductor&N=301082&part=MSD%2D31359&autoview=sku&Ntk=KeywordSearch

These look fantastic as well in the ohms per foot category and also have a
good center conductor wire.
http://store.summitracing.com/default.asp?target=partdetail.asp&autofilter=1&Ntt=spark+plug+wires&N=4294864973&part=MOR%2D73800&autoview=sku&Ntk=KeywordSearch

These have 500 ohms per foot, which isn't fantastic, but probably better
than most. Notice the silver plated copper wire conductor
http://store.summitracing.com/default.asp?target=partdetail.asp&autofilter=1&Ntt=copper+wire&N=0&part=ACC%2D8848&autoview=sku&Ntk=KeywordSearch

These don't look bad, but I couldn't find the ohms per foot stat even on
their web site::
http://store.summitracing.com/default.asp?target=partdetail.asp&autofilter=1&Ntt=taylor+wires&N=301881&Nao=20&part=TAY%2D70654&autoview=sku&Ntk=KeywordSearch

I am sure there are more if you research it.
While those Mallory MAA-938 look excellent in the ohms per foot category, I
don't see what material they use for a conductor. The carbon coated
fiberglass conductors are pretty fragile and can't take much abuse. So I'd
do more research there if it were me.

Things to look for when ordering wires:

HEI sets do not have a coil wire so if you don't have HEI make sure
you are buying a set that includes a coil wire.

Boot angles are critical in some cases. Make sure you know what works for
your engine-exhaust combination. You don't want a wire to rest on headers or
exhaust manifolds.

I like buying a set made to length for the engine to save time and trouble,
but if you take the time with a universal kit you could probably save some
length and therefore resistance in the wire by making it as short as
possible.

Use the grease when sliding on boots and inside of boots for sliding on
plugs so you don't pull the wire apart when removing it from the plug.

Also, use a small amount of anti-sieze compound (available at most auto
parts stores and hardware stores) on the spark plug threads and don't over
torque.

   Steve

Thanks for posting that,Steve. I think I'm going to buy that first set of
MSD wires for $68.

My name is Don, I live in the Cincinnati Ohio area & I'm 50 years old. I
make my living as a police sergeant for a suburban city police dept. I've
been a cop for over 21 years. Before that I was an auto mechanic. I
currently own a 1968 Malibu that was originally an L79 (325hp 327) 4 speed
car. It is now a 400hp .. 355"... 4 speed.
My first chevelle was a 67 SS 396 4spd I bought around 1973. Then I had a 69
SS a couple of years later. I've also owned several Mopars & even a couple
of F**d muscle cars. I got my current Chevelle about 3 years ago but I think
that I'm going to put it up for sale so I can buy another house. But not to
worry, I'll buy another muscle car (probably another Chevelle) in the next
year or so.
This is a great list & I've always enjoyed reading about everyone's cars &
how they meet all of the challenges of owning these cars.
Don

Just sitting here thinking about the average age of the Chevelle guy

wondered what the ages are and when they got their fist Chevelle.

Ok, it's not the best picture, but there it is.  My new Covan's dash, and Black faced TPI Gauges.  I think it has a nice Old School feel to it.
Hopefully before the weekend is up, I can get my car wired.

I have one question though.  Will the Big Block springs from another year fit my car?  Autozone does not have a 65 listed as offered with a big block.  I was thinking of getting some '66 or '67 Big block springs, and motor mount from Autozone.  They are local, and fairly cheap (i.e. No shipping charges).

Thanks

Re: [Chevelle-list] The Best Web Site I Have Ever Seen! > Chevelles

2003-11-13 Thread don

This was pretty good in my opinion!
Don

  Well
I am not sure if I figured it out the same as you did, but I do believe I
found what it has to do with Chevelles in my mind.

  I
think it has everything to do with Chevelles. And a whole lot more! This
country was founded on and holds dear freedom above almost everything else. We
have even been known to spread a little around and fight for other's freedom
while making sure we maintained our own.

  For
those of us growing up in the 60's the muscle car epitomized freedom.
Especially for the teen and returning serviceman from places like Viet Nam. It
gave us mobility and freedom to get around where we wanted and when. And did
so in style and a whole lot more.

  It
also incorporated some of the best of American engineering and brought the
most powerful cars on earth to customers that couldn't get enough of
them. For a change they were being made because of what the customer
wanted instead of whatever the corporate board members liked themselves. Men
like Delorean, Iacocca, Duntov, and more had to fight to get the American
Muscle Car into production, only to be proven right by us and our free
  choices.

Yesterday, Veteran's day,  we thanked and remembered the military
person that helped to defend that freedom that made the Chevelle possible.
Today we are thankful for the military person that defends our freedom to
remain a free society and not allow others to impose their "religion" and
ways upon us. Surely, the freedom to do what we do with our Chevelles
would be in jeopardy at the very least without the American serviceman and
  woman.

  May
we always have enough volunteers to defend our way of life. I served
my time and I know others here have as well. I know the tradition will
continue. I hope my great grandchildren inherit a life of freedom defended and
maintained by our ability to use our technology and power when necessary
to defend our freedoms and those of others. I hope to pass my Chevelle on down
  for generations.

Don,
Take the top pad off, there are some screws under the front edge and clips
toward the windshield. After the pad is removed, you can reach in from the
top and change the bulbs. If all of them are out, check the fuse first.

Title: HEI tune-up kits

I put an Accel "Billetproof" electronic distributor in my chevelle small
block over a year ago & haven't had any problems with it.  ($192 plus
coil at Jeg's )
I just installed a Mallory HEI distributor in a friend's small block
chevelle ($159 at Summit with coil, cap, etc) I haven't started the engine yet
so I can't advise on performance but it is a bolt in replacement & on
initial inspection seems to be high quality.
Don

  Looking to upgrade my
HEI distributor and was looking at summit and jegs. All of the
  kits I was looking at
have the cap, rotor, module, coil,
adjustable vacuum advance, advance weights & springs,
and  bushings. There seems to be a bit of difference in prices.

  Proform-79.99
  MSD-137.99
  Pertronix-119.99
Have any of you had any
experience with any of these? Proform good or bad? I was thinking on staying
away from Accel being that my
  current Accel
cap and rotor (stock module and
coil) which have only been on there 1 year, are all worn out and carboned up
  and carbon tracking. I
don’t know if it is just because of the rest of
the ignition needs better quality parts added or not.

I have the
same manual and I never noticed that before, but there it is!  Yes, this 5-digit code is the first 5
numbers of the VIN.  But it doesn’t
list a different number for a ’69 SS convertible, wonder why?  We all should keep in mind that
Chevrolet probably didn’t keep very good records back then.

Well,
it finally worked, I hope it shows up properly for ya'll.

To my
knowledge, this 5 digit code is the first 5 numbers of the VIN.  The
service manual also lists the 1969 model numbers for '69 Chevrolet, '69 Nova,
'69 Camaro, & '69 Corvette.  I highly recommend this manual for
everyone.  I have used the heck out of it.

I hope
this helps ya'll out.  Again, maybe I'm reading this wrong, if so, please
correct me.  I'm trusting in the Chevrolet Manual for now, but I'm still
open minded to any other inputs.

Scott,
Sorry to say that according to Chevy's manual, you car is the same as mine, a
Malibu 2 Door Sport Coupe.  Again, don't take this as the FINAL
answer.  If the guys/gals in here have further info, I'm sure they can add
to this.  As far as a theory to why it was sold as an SS, I'm
stumped.

Re: [Chevelle-list] OT: found a '63 Falcon squire wagon for sale

2003-07-29 Thread Don
The little Falcons seem to be getting popular recently. I've seen a few real
nice ones at car shows. I'm not sure how the aftermarket parts supply is for
these cars but they're simple cars & it seems that they'd be easy to restore
if you can get parts.
My very first car was a 62 Mercury Meteor which is a Mercury version of the
Falcon. It was a great little car that I drove for years.
Don
--

Ok guys/gals, I stumbled across a pretty neat looking '63 Falcon Squire
wagon for $850! It's admittedly rough, but looks to be about 95%
complete, and runs and drives! That little 170ci engine fired right up
and purred quietly.

All the glass and trim are present, and in surprisingly good
condition. It definately needs restored, but for the money, seems
like a pretty good deal.

We always wanted something unique and different, and this thing
certainly fits the bill. I've always thought the Falcons were pretty
neat.

This would be my 1st non GM car, and I don't know anything about them.

I've not decided I would keep it or not, but seems like it could be a
decent car to keep, and if I change my mind I don't think I should have
much problem getting my money back out of it, and probably even a
little more. I'm still weary from my Chevelle restoration, so for
sure it'll be a few years before I'd get to it.

Anyone have any comments or words of wisdom? :-)

Hi Tom,

I noticed there haven't been any replies to your question "Is vacuum advance
really necessary in a modified engine?" so I'm going to make an attempt...

For a street driven vehicle, yes the vacuum advance is necessary as well as
the centrifugal advance. Why? Because in a street driven vehicle, the
engine is placed under constantly varying loads. During most normal driving
speeds, the engine rpm isn't high enough for the centrifugal advance to
increase the timing when needed so the timing is advanced/retarded based on
the vacuum signal from the engine, depending of course on the load at the
time (high load = low vacuum, low load = high vacuum). Of course at higher
rpm when there isn't much vacuum signal the centrifugal advance takes over.

On a race only engine where peak power and performance is achieved in a very
narrow rpm band, vacuum advance isn't needed bacause the centrifugal advance
puts the timing at a specified postition within a small rpm window.

I'm sure I oversimplified it but hopefully it will help you understand it
better.

Subject: [Chevelle-List] Advance curve adjustment

I've been reading up on how to change the advance curve on my 71 350 Malibu
with stock distrubutor. I'm planning to replace the points with a Mallory
unit, and I thought I would also play with the weights and springs to see if
I can improve the performance, but I have a couple of questions.

I've measured the current advance curve using tape to degree the balancer
and my timing light. Total vacuum advance is 13 deg, and total mechanical
advance is 10 deg, and it is all engaged (23 deg total) by about 2800 rpm.
I've read that the optimum total timing advance is about 36 deg on a SBC, so
that is where the timing is currently set at 3000 rpm. Timing at idle works
out to be about 13 deg (BTDC).

My question is, is vacuum advance really necessary in a modified engine?
>From what I've read, the vacuum advance is designed advanced the timing
between 1000 and 3000 rpm, but retard the advance when you go to WOT to
compensate for a leaner mixture. But on a properly tuned carb (I'm currently
using an Edelbrock 1405 with vacuum advance on the ported opening), the
mixture doesn't go lean, in fact, it goes rich. A rich mixture takes longer
to burn, so timing should stay advanced. With the current setup, at WOT the
vacuum will go away, so the timing advance will be 13 degrees retarded, for
a total advance of 36-13=23 deg, not the optimum 36 deg.

Would I be better off to remove the vacuum advance and adjust the mechanical
advance to provide the total advanced from 13 deg (idle) to 36 deg (3000
rpm)?

Hope this makes sense.

make it a "Secret" link from my primary web page. See, the story goes
something like this: My Dad had a '69 SS when I was about 3. He ended up
selling it (regrets it to this day.) Since I'm in the military, he hasn't
had the chance to see mine yet. I'm keeping it a surprise for when he comes
up to Alaska to visit next summer. I'm gonna toss him the keys and tell him
to go out to the garage and take her for a spin. I figure it will take him
back to his glory days for a spell. If I have it posted on the web, he'll
see it, and then the surprise is wrecked.

  This is only an
educated guess based on the program and the inputs you gave.  I could not

dropped the lift a fraction and opened up the separation from 110 to 112,
neither of which made a big difference.

  You should have
a really wide power band with a terrific torque curve, with over 90% of peak

which sounds more like what you are describing- You

I installed offset crosshafts on my 72 sbc to correct an alignment issue.
After the shafts and front bushings, it aligned just fine.
Got the offset shafts down at the local Checker auto parts.
They actually had them in stock.

I think what he really meant to say was "offset a-arm crossshaft". I
haven't personally dealt with these, but where the upper arm bolts to the
frame, that shaft is replaceable with an offset shaft that will cure some
alignment issues, like those your mechanic is having with your car. Hope
this sheds some light..

Well, here's my issue for the day 8^]

I got the car back to the shop today after rebuilding
the front end over the weekend, and the mechanic just
called with the following updates..

He asked if I'd changed the springs on the car, and I
told him yep all the way around. I used hi-lift
springs from JC Whitney to give it that 60's jacked
look all the way around, and he claims that b/c of the
new springs I should now look into replacing the stock
A-arms with offset ones. He said that he can get the
camber ajustment to be OK, but the caster is still
going to be in the negative b/c of the springs. He
said that the tires should be OK though b/c he is
adjusting the front end to compensate as best as he
can.

Anyone heard of this before? Does this sound normal?
I was actually kind of shocked to hear that the
factory arms would be difficult to adjust w/new
springs. All part of the learning process I guess!

I think those screws adjust air and not fuel and therefore counterclockwise
= more air = leaner.

  IDLE MIXTURE

The Edelbrock Performer Series carburetor has
conventional Idle Mixture Screws (IMS) that provide a leaner A/F when turned clockwise
and richer A/F when turned counter clockwise. The idle air flow is controlled
by a conventional screw that opens the Primary Throttles. The following
procedure should be used to set the idle mixture and speeds.

I don't think so. When you turn counter-clockwise, you
  create more space

Correct...counter-clockwise is leaner. Your only adjusting the air flow into
the idle circuit.

Actually, I thought they were the idle air mixture screws for the idle

RE: [Chevelle-List] question about center links

2003-05-27 Thread Don Fields
I have replaced front suspension parts on several cars.
I would crawl under and squeeze the joints ( top to bottom ) with a channel
lock.
If I saw more than a RCH of play I would consider replacing it.
It depends on how tight u want the front end .
If I was doing the in and out tie rods I would probably do the center link
and the idler.
It seems that most of those parts wear at the same rate.
Can't understand a pitman arm going bad ?

Roger on the price. I've found them (for a 67) anywhere from $85 to
$150. I don't know how often they really go bad, but I can see the
mechanics point of if you're doing it, do it all and do it right. I
think Autozone was one of the higher priced ones too. Pittman arms
don't usually go bad unless they're broken. There are no joints to wear
out and about the only thing that can go wrong is the hole getting
reamed over time - but it's not common. Sleeves are the same, nothing
to wear out unless the bolts are stripped. Tell him you'll get a front
end kit from P-S-T or someone similar and a Moog or TRW centerlink and
bring him the parts. Labor may cost a bit more since he's not making a
profit on the parts but the parts should cost a bunch less in the long
run.

Sincerely and with all due respect, individually
we can effect a change, however small.  I can't think of a time
when a civilized nation (or the nations of the world as a whole)
sanctioned shooting its own citizens because they wanted to leave a combat
