The other thing to keep in mind, while many are discovering LMS, most of "us" are experienced users. (To me) it seems like "Radio" was targeted to the "I bought a sb radio, plugged it in, lets listen to the internet". If you are to change "radio" I would think it makes sense to target power over convenience for functionality. Remember, allot of the wonderful powerful plugin and functions of LMS are not "plug and play" for those new to LMS (example DSTM, You Tube plugin, etc). If a new user wants plug and play they choose sonos these days. my 2 cents to stimulate thoughts, or, just dismiss it as another rambling ;) Jim Redrum's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=33806 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=116094 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Radio stations
I've just disabled the default "Radio" plugin and enabled bpa's "Radio.Net" plugin instead. Countries -> All -> France results in over 60 pages of radio stations, which is much more like what I was expecting. At the moment I'm getting used to the change of interface, but my initial feeling is that I'm going to miss the original "Radio" plugin's additional region/city selector - it gave less intimidating lists of stations! But overall, I'm just really happy to see international radio stations again :) Paul Webster wrote: > This is why I suggested a few months ago that It would help if LMS > allowed more than one provider of radio stations search/browse function. If you mean allow Radio.Net, TuneIn (and others) to all feed a common "Radio" plugin, that would be a nice solution. If done well it would turn our LMS instances into feed aggregators. The wrinkle is likely to be whether there is enough common metadata in all the feed providers to allow a usable common UI. For example, the region/city "field" that TuneIn used to further filter in-country browsing may not be available in Radio.Net etc. SixedUp's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=13452 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=116094 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

The Radio plugin is an interface to the Tune-in service which is a commercial service and not something run by Logitech. It is fully maintained but Tune-in may be losing out to other directory sites. The content on a internet directory is driven by commercial reason(i.e. ad revenues) and some degree of exclusivity (i.e.some stations may only appear on one directory/aggregator site). For French station why not add the 3rd party RadioFrance plugin. Another alternative, you could install the 3rd party Radio.net plugin and then do a select country "France" or whatever Francophone country (e.g. Algeria) . I've not used the radio plugin in a long time, but I'm currently learning French, and I remembered that it used to provide a huge number of radio stations from all over the world. But when I looked today there was almost nothing; just a handful of stations in 3 or 4 English speaking countries. Since that "radio" plugin was originally provided by Logitech, I'm guessing that the data sources are no longer being maintained and have faded away with time. So what are the options to obtain a good selection of radio feeds both here in the UK, and from around the rest of the world? It would be nice to be able to filter by location, genre, and language if possible. I have to repost this question. Please let me know if I should start a new thread somewhere else to get attention from some developers. The LMS material skin app and my Touch player display the information and cover art of the previous track, not the current one. I did a few experiements and found it happens when shuffle is turned on and right after the first song, which means after the first song finishes, the display repeats the same info and art work again and then proceed to the second track when the third one is already playing. THe problem is always there regardless the playlist consists of just one album (folder) or multiple albums (folder with subfolders). If shuffle is unchecked, the display will show the info of the current track. verycd's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=49940 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=114874 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

I was just offering my observations of a 3b+ (1GB) and 4 (2GB). I don't notice the difference, but because I don't pay attention, probably because a 3b+ has worked fine for me. I just checked and I have about 16,000 tracks, 1,300 albums in my library. The last rescan (update, not wipe and rescan) took about 7 minutes. My server is a pi 3b+ with a 2TB USB HDD (not solid state). I have it setup with the LMS data and cache on a third partition on the SD card (helps in recovery from power failures). Explaining a bit more (since you are new to picore). I have my library "master" on my PC's. I use SAMBA on picore (allows access to the pi HDD) and freefilesync (free PC software) to sync my library on the PC to the Pi HDD. So, I rip an new album to the PC, fix the tags, run ffs, then rescan. One nice benefit is I also use Samba/ffs to backup my critical PC files (photos, documents, etc) to the pi HDD. I also have a cabin with an identical setup, so I have "off site" backup/redundancy. All of that for $100 (pi and HDD) per location - thank you pcp team and this community!! :D Back to your post. I don't know the mechanisms of a scan (maybe someone in the know can explain), but i image that scan data is paged back and forth between the RAM and SD (cache). Could this be a dynamic page size (based on available RAM) and occur faster with more RAM? I don't know. Like I said, it doesn't matter how long a scan takes for me. I'm not 100% clear on what you are trying to do, what you are building, perhaps you could clarify. Post your goal here and we will help you get there Finally, $50 CAD is about $40 USD, sounds like a nice deal! Yes, I checked the "community firmware" under advanced. Can't wait to experience the newest firmware. Yes, the LMS switch is under my music, which I didn't know. Thank you. I checked the music folder under player>extra settings and interface>extra settings last night but the music folder option disappeared this morning. Under player, it was still checked, under interface, it was unchecked. There is no save option so I set it with everything else as default setting for the interface. Hope it will remain there. I have never spent time studing how to tag so the library is not well-organized. :o verycd's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=49940 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=114874 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

I really don't use mysb.com, but, if for some reason LMS wasn't available, which caused say a touch to auto switch to mysb.com, once I resolved why LMS was off line, I just choose "my music" to switch back to LMS, then home, then Favorites, Radio, Apps, etc. It's just easy for me. "My Music" is basically a switch to LMS for me. Re: [slim] Radio stations don't get updated
Thank you, kidstypike, startibartfast, d6jg and redrum! Now I can see "music folder" which is the only way I can navigate through my library. Not sure why but "album" shows one track as an album. Folder groups items together. This app could move the Touch from mysqueezebox.com back to LMS, which is very helpful. On the Touch itself, I can shift from LMS to mysqueezebox.com if I reboot the unit but once it is shifted to mysqueezebox.com, the LMS option disappeared. It is not under network, not under other libraries. Nowhere to be found unless I move it to LMS with the online interface and the material app. The touch firmware is 7.8.0-r16754. I installed the "community firmware for touch/radio/controller 0.0.6" two days ago, hoping soon the newest firmware would show up in the software update option on the Touch but so far I haven't seen it yet. Maybe the new firmware will give the option locally on the Touch to shift back from mysqueezebox.com to LMS. Also, the screen does not show the music playing but rather the menu after shifting back to LMS with material skin app. The screen and remote of the touch becomes irrelevant to what is playing. I am interested in classical and jazz. The music and artist app has been installed. verycd's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=49940 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=114874 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Just to report on WOL. After trying all possible combinations of settings, suspected it was router ports not open but couldn't open them on the loggon page. Got 9 and 9000 opened by calling internet service provider. Both work on different Android WOL apps but not on the Squeezer app somehow. Don't know why but don't mind making one extra click. :D:D verycd's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=49940 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=114874 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

But as a cheap bastard, I think it is also over-priced... You need to use what works for you. Whatever you are most comfortable with. It seems your preference is toward your solution, so that's great! I think we just offered you an alternative that allot of us use. I am not a pi hardware expert, I just use 'em, but many here are. If you look around at a few threads, many feel the heat concern is overblown. I have a 3b+ and a 4 running LMS and I can't tell the difference. I also can't tell the difference on performance/response, but perhaps that's just because I am not paying attention. Like I said, a 3b+ is fine for me. I have a 4 because I gave my other 3b+ to setup a friend, and he bought me a 4 in return. I think others are using 2's and even zero W's (but I prefer a LAN connection for my server). It's funny you mention the power consumption of vintage electronics, as I have a couple old rotel integrated amps that are always on (because you can't remotely turn them off). At my cabin I have an old arcam A65, and a schitt dac that I use with a touch, that are always on (when I'm there) for the same reason. I guess when I mentioned the low power consumption of the pi, it was more of a "bonus". I guess I am find spending a little $ to use the old analog gear I've owned forever. Not to take this thread totally off the rails, but the "smart switch" you recommended, I have been looking all over for something similar that could be controlled with *IR* so I could power the vintage stuff along with everything else with a Harmony remote. You would think that someone would make it but it seems that they all use the 300MHz (US) intermittent band to solve "line of sight". I have not found one other than X10 which is alot of hardware for a simple task. I have been thinking of buying a smart switch and putting an IR front end on it. Re: [slim] Radio stations don't get updated
I figured out it was not the LMS that prevented the notebook from going to sleep. It is spooler. Not sure how the service got started because I didn't print anything from the notebook for months. After stopping the service and deleted all the "unfinished print job files" in a file folder, The notebook can go to sleep when LMS is running. I set the "prevent LMS from standby" to 3 minutes and Windows to sleep at 10 minutes. I usually force the system to sleep with the dedicated button on the external keyboard if I am using it for other tasks. The sleep setting will kick in when the computer is only used as LMS in case I am too lazy or forget. I can't see why it is much less convenient than a dedicated constantly-running server since one doesn't have to worry about putting the notebook to sleep. To wake it up, if Wake-on-Lan works (a shame I haven't figured it out), it only takes one click in the squeezer app. If someone uses squeezer app to control the players, the app has to be opened anyway. Some online reviews on the Pi 4 say it has heat management problem too while the Pi 400 is better in that because there is a large piece of aluminum plate covering the entire bottom of the keyboard case and it is 15% faster. But as a cheap bastard, I think it is also over-priced, especially when I already have two reppurposed laptops set up. Letting one multi-tasking actually saves space and energy. I think we should be more concerned about old receivers, for 35 watts at standby is what a modern 55' 4K LED TV uses at work (about 1/3 brightness). verycd's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=49940 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=114874 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

I am sure PI 4 would be much faster for the task. glad you didn't feel pushed :) when you hooked the USB drive to the touch, and were not happy two things were in play: 1) While previous sb devices had "out of the box" through mysb.com exclusively, the touch expanded the out of box by added a small version of LMS, referred to as "tiny LMS". It too is no longer supported and ironically, also suffers the http/https limitation. There is alot of discussion here on it, it is crash prone if you try to do too much (play, scan, and flip through menus at the same time). Seems like that is what you experienced. I setup a non tech friend with the touch running tiny LMS and a thumb drive of music and it did fine for him. I eventually got him a picoreplayer (server) for the https thing, and, because he enjoys the radio paradise streams, this gave him the FLAC streams. He still doesn't know why he needs the little box (pCP) hooked to his router, oh well... 2) If your USB drive did not have a separate power supply, perhaps the touch USB could not power it, but perhaps you checked that. IIRC Pi don't support WOL (maybe more to do with s/w rather than h/w) maybe because power usage is considered to be low. Often users who want to remotely turn/off Pi use wifi / Zigbee controlled socket and use on/off control from phone/tablet - suits users already with some HA. Power up delay is the downside. bpa's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1806 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=114874 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Your original post reflected disappointment that the touch stand alone operation (mysb.com) was not maintained like other devices, like phones. It would not update/play old radio station urls as radio urls migrate from http to https. Sometimes the old http streams are alive, sometimes not. This is due to the fact that mysb.com has not been maintained for years, however, logitech has kept it alive for legacy purposes. The suggested answer to fix the problem for your touch is to have something running LMS. You asked for a solution where you didn't have to keep the PC on, so many of us suggested the raspberry pi. Sorry if maybe we (I) pushed too hard, a lot of us adore the fact that you can run a extremely versatile and powerful music server on such an inexpensive platform, myself included. Of course a lot of other hardware, PC's, Phones, etc can have a more convenient and robust UI (like the podcast interface as you mentioned), but, if you try the material skin on your phone, PC, pad, it has a real nice UI, and fairly decent podcast management. In summary to your op,yes, maintenance of the sb devices as standalone devices was dropped when logitech discontinued the line, but maintenance and development of the product line and ecosystem/LMS lived on thanks to the members of this community and especially those that contribute their time in development (thank you, thank you, thank you!). The important thing is you found a solution that works for you. After all, it's all about the music, eh? :) Jim Redrum's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=33806 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=114874 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

About 10W while running LMS alone and 0.2W at sleep. I guess, based on my listening time (maxium 100Hs a month), if I don't run it 24/7 as a dedicated server, the cost of playing music is $0.5 CAN . Running a Pi 400 24/7 will probably costs more (2.5w while idling). Either way, not a big deal but not a must investment because I don't have other use for the Pi 400 and I have more than 50,000 tracks on an external hard drive. The $120 second-hand HP laptop has much power for indexing and easy to operate since it's already hooked with external monitor, mouse and keyboard for other tasks. Changing the name in the URLs from "secure" to "stream" does not make the "http" URLS playable for me. There is definitely another factor in play - maybe a CDN issue which can be region specific. The presence of ads indicates means a different delivery mechanism and more so if the ads inserted have been tailored to the listeners region. bpa's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1806 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=114874 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Re: [slim] Radio stations don't get updated
Thank you for all the valuable suggestions to take advantage of the squeezebox. I have been thinking about the raspberry pi. I emailed the radio station (vip-radios.fm) and asked if there was a http url link that I could use. It turns out simply dropping the "s" is the solution. I assume other radio stations probably also keep their older links alive while providing the https to TuneIn. I will certainly try if I face the same issue again. BTW. I clicked the "access your favorite streams as OPML" at the bottom of the "favorites" tab on mysqueezebox.com. Now I can only see the OPML links. I can still add new favorite http links but they will show as OPML below. Is there a way to go back and show all links as URLs? It will be easier to see the https links I put in previously and use "edit" to change them to "http" and see what will happen. verycd's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=49940 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=114874 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss

Indeed, for my use, a retired phone on a stand probably serves > better because it will play all stations. you have been given good advice from the senior "go to" :) members here, but perhaps I can fill a couple gaps. In my mind "mysqueezebox.com" was developed for "out of the box" operation of the sb devices. However, the functionality is dwarfed by LMS, even early on. When logitech dropped the line, mysqueezebox development was dropped, while it remains alive (as was mentioned) thanks to logitech for legacy functionality. So when stations started migrating to https, mysqueezebox got less and less useful. mysqueezebox has other deficiencies that have developed over time. I understand your "play music with the computer off", as I used to run LMS on a windows machine, and every time I turned the computer off, I said "hey! what happened to the music??!!" :) As @slarti mentioned, using a raspberry pi as an "always on", low cost (<$50USD), low power server gives you what you are looking for including ALOT more. I chose to go the picoreplayer route, which is popular here, but there are others. Your touch is still a nice piece of kit, throw $50 at it for a cute litte rpi server, and if you choose to, add storage (local, network, etc) to add your library. You won't regret it. Think of it as an "add on" for your touch to play https if you like. There are alot of "how to" threads here we can point you to... The "computer" required to run LMS is similar to a media streamer such as AppleTV, a FireTV or Roku and with a Touch will generally offer better experience (i.e. audio quality, program info such a track artist, bio, covers) than a modern internet radio or repurposed phone. The same LMS can be used to additionally play audio to other devices you may have such as Airplay or UPNP speakers. Unlike a contemporary iPhone / Android, the Touch has a good resale value so do not junk the Touch. bpa's Profile: http://forums.slimdevices.com/member.php?userid=1806 View this thread: http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=114874 ___ discuss mailing list discuss@lists.slimdevices.com http://lists.slimdevices.com/mailman/listinfo/discuss
