It seems that on the pages with the OOoPageStyle style, which is most of each chapter, the footer should have the chapter title (entered with a Chapter field, which gets its value from the paragraph with the OOoHeading 0 paragraph style) and the page number, separated with a |. Page numbers go on the outside margin. On the pages with the OOoFrontMatter page style, the footer has a Title field and page number, again separated with |. A glossary, especially of terms (e.g., from pages 11 and 12, odbc; jdbc, GNU, kernel, and glibc; page 114: regular expression; page 158: Bezler curves; page 185: database normalization) with which a lot of people might be unfamiliar, would make *Getting Started* even more useful. 1. Greater consistency in the presentation of internal links (for instance, some Figures being shown in the text *before**,* rather than after, the link to them – such as, on page 273, the reference to Figure 244, which occurs *after* the Figure itself) would improve workability. 1. Some more “colloquial” wording might also serve to make less skilled users more comfortable. Tell me how you'd like to proceed. And thanks again for the opportunity … Michele; Thank you for all your good work on your review of the Getting Started Guide Is this Glossary intended to be included as part of the Back Matter of the full book, or as Francis addressed below in his reply as a stand-alone document that could be inclusive of the complete set of User Guides. How we proceed in the long run depends on a number of factors. For the Glossary it depends on its ultimate use. If it is meant as a stand-alone document for one guide or as an integrated part of the book it would be handled one way, if as a stand-alone document for the entire set of guides it would be another way entirely. I will start a [Discuss] thread so that all the members can give their opinions on the best way to do it. For the consistency of Figure placement I agree with Francis that it would be best addressed in the Calc Guide as the placement has to be addressed in the chapter documents. The full book is simply the chapter docs merged into one doc along with any Front Matter and/or Back Matter if it is required. For the more colloquial wording, that can start to be addressed as I work through the Writer Guide, and followed up in the rest of the guides as they are started. If you could write up your suggestions and post them here all of the team members can have access to them. Hello Francis, I will comment on your suggestion in-line F Campos Costero wrote: Hi Michele, I think a standalone glossary could be very useful. There is a lot of jargon and it would not be practical to give an adequate explanation of terms within the flow of the text.I also suspect that there would be a lot of overlap in the terms among the various guides, making a standalone glossary more practical. Although a stand-alone Glossary would be an excellent addition, remember we also publish the individual chapters. It may be helpful to have a glossary specific to each chapter. What do you think? You make a good point about the location of figures. I'm inclined to make those changes in the next guide to get a major revision, which would be the Calc Guide. I think Keith is about ready to publish the Writer Guide. Actually I am not ready to publish it, With all the time spent on getting to Getting started book right, as well as things in my personal life, I am behind on reviewing the chapters. Chapter one is ready, but in Chpater 2 I found a number of corrections that need to be made. I will be starting Chapter 3 today and spending most of my time the next few weeks reviewing the rest of the chapters. You are right about some passages being less friendly than they could be. All of the guides suffer from uneven tone. There have been many authors and I think some spoke English as a second language. It's probably not practical, or even desirable, to completely even out the style, but introducing a bias towards less formal writing is a good idea. I wholeheartedly agree with the above. Some of it could also be from repeated us of the same phrasing or word. This is more a style issue and would need to be addressed on an individual basis. Some of these style issues may be a result of my own bias, for which I apologize profusely. What would you think of working with me to complete the revision of the Calc guide? The version in the Git repository has been substantially revised from the version on the web page but it could use improvements like the ones you suggest. In relatively little time we could have something to replace the very old version on the web page. I think that would bring the biggest improvement to the published documentation for the least effort on our part. We could then come back to implement your specific suggestions for the Getting Started guide having acquired some experience on the Calc guide. I think this would a good idea as well. It would give Michele an opportunity to get familiar with GitHub and be able to more interactively rather than having to wait wait until a guide or it's chapters are published to he mwiki. Regards Keith Thanks for all your effort so far. If you would rather concentrate on the glossary exclusively or work on any other aspect of the documentation, just say so! Regards Keith Hi Keith I'll try to compile the whole text and see how it goes. Francis Keith, I compiled all of the AOO41GS#.odt files into a file named AllChapters.odt. I had to reinsert a figure or two in most of the chapters. After saving it and taking a break, I scrolled through the whole document looking for missing figures both among the numbered figures in frames and the in-line images that show individual toolbar icons. That was very tedious, so I'm not highly confident I didn't miss anything. However, I didn't see any missing figures. There is a comment on page 251 that needs to be resolved. I'm not sure what you would like for the next step. I could just push the AllChapters file (with a different name?) to the top level folder of the repository, or I can make it available separately. Regards, Francis Francis; For now, since there are questions to be resolved, push it to the Review folder as AOO41GS.odt. Again thank you for helping to get this straightened out. Apologies for lack of work latel;y
Greetings All; I am sure people have noticed my lack of participation the last few weeks. I have been spending a lot of time at my girlfriends shuttling her between the VA hospital in Bedford MA, and Jamaica Plains, a part of Boston. This has required me to spend a large amount of time at her apartment and away from my computer. I still be spending time with her, but not as much as lately. With the Getting Started book in final review I will be splitting my time between preparing the Chapter files for Getting Started Ready for Publication to the mwiki, and reviewing the Chapter files for the Writer Guide to get that book moving along. As Jean says: "a bug in AOO means that a book created using a master doc (ODM) and the chapter files (containing hidden sections) will have some incorrect internal cross-references to figure captions." I've created Dutch odms in the past and never came across this. For now I've tried several times and ultimately gave up on it. Importing all chapters into one .odt works for me Dick; It is not so much that I have given up on ODM's, but that I am frustrated that they are not working properly. They should be the easiest way to compile multi-chapter books, yet with bugs like this they are useless. I am trying to resolve this list of errors below, especially the 4th one listed as on page 154 of the PDF in the ForWiki folder. It does appear to be due the the frame of the Figure above it being to large. Everything I have tried to reduce the space has only proved to move one or both figures out of sequence. The problem is in AOO41GS7.odt, which is Chapter 6 on Draw. Any help that can be provided would be gretly appreciated. But it is another good example of why one needs to carefully check a compiled book for errors. Jean Jean; Yes the PDF was created from the ODT, but one that deleted the Table of Contents. That Could account for a lot of the problems with x-refs as page numbers definitely would be off. I will recreate the PDF from the complete ODT and see what that yields, and then start tearing the chapter files apart again if it does not help the other problems. Jean; The problem I see with being able to do this is the owner of the account. Because ASF is a US 501(C)(3)Tax Exempt charity, neither it nor AOO can be the owner of the account as it would likely violate the terms of that status. Jean Weber wrote: Keith, POD (print on demand) is perfect for a group publishing project, because there is no inventory and no one has to take orders or fulfill sales, mail out books, etc. Once the book is uploaded to the POD service, that service takes orders, processes payments, prints and mails out the book, and (at specified intervals) sends any profit to the account holder. There is no upfront cost for using the service; the service provider takes a cut of sales. There are two common ways to publish POD books: 1) through Amazon Kindle Direct (AKD - which now does paperback books as well as ebooks) or 2) through Lulu. Some other services exist, but I'm unfamiliar with them. When I started doing this about 15 years ago, the only practical way to publish was through Lulu, and I've seen no reason to change. Lulu has its own online bookstore, and one can optionally choose "global distribution" to get a book into other online retailers such as Amazon. Some considerations regarding global distribution: 1) Global distribution from Lulu requires the book to have an ISBN, which may cost money to obtain (the amount varies greatly depending on several factors). If selling only through the Lulu bookstore, an ISBN is optional. I am not sure if an ISBN is required by AKD. 2) The requirements for the quality of the content in submitted PDFs are higher for global distribution. For example, the line weights in some screenshots may be too light to be acceptable, and all transparency needs to be removed. These requirements have become more strict in recent years. I assume they are the same for AKD. 3) The price to buyers is higher for books in global distribution, even for the copies sold through the Lulu bookstore. For these reasons, I have not used global distribution for several years although I did for awhile. I found that I got very few sales through Amazon compared to the sales directly through Lulu. Most people apparently weren't finding the books by searching; they were following links from relevant websites (OOo, LO, or my own sites). So, the first things to decide are: 1) Do you want to sell through Amazon and other online retailers? Or would Lulu Bookstore be enough? 2) Who will be the account holder with whatever service is selected? Once an account is set up, one can publish a book. 3) Who will prepare the files for uploading? 4) Who will create the cover art? 5) Who will do the various publishing steps? PLEASE NOTE that most of these problems are in the full book, but NOT in the chapter files. There are many inconsistent uses of numbered and/or bulletted lists throughout the book, probably due to incorrect/inconsistent style use. I am not going to itemize all of them, but here are some examples from Chapter 1. Page 19, at the top is a paragraph numbered 1), but the paragraph just before Figure 15 on page 18 should be 1) and this paragraph 2). Further down, there is another paragraph numbered 1), as it should be, but the next paragraph does not have a number, even though it is part of the same procedure; it should be 2). Further down, under Saving a Document Automatically, the two final paragraphs are a procedure and should be numbered 1) and 2). Page 20, the use (or not) of bullet points is inconsistent, and the final paragraph is centered but should not be. A few random examples from other chapters, after which I gave up looking. Page 72 (in Chapter 3), under Adding a Movie or Sound, there is an un-numbered procedure. Further down is an item in a different procedure numbered 3), but the other items in that procedure have no numbers. Under Using Mail Merge, several items should have bullet points. Page 81 (in Chapter 4), there is an item numbered 4), but the other items in the procedure have no numbers. Page 115, list begins with 4) but the actual first list item is not numbered. Some lists use numbers followed by a closing parenthesis; some use numbers followed by a period (full stop). How to handle design of Guides Updated from version 3.3
The first thing I saw as I started reviewing the chapters of the writer guide was Francis' not around the handling of the Title page and other front matter. My first inclination is to remove most of it and treat it as we did the Getting Started Guide and put all that information in the ODM file. What do others think? I will start reviewing the content changes only as we continue this discussion.
