[Elecraft] K3: 200Hz filter and manual notching oddity
All, I purchased 200 Hz 5-pole filters for my K3. They work fine except for one oddity: If I set a manual notch at exactly 700 Hz, then sweep the bandwidth control from the maximum of 2.5 KHz to a minimum 0.05 KHz, I would expect the audio to disappear at whatever the notch width is, (Passband = NOTCH), and stay that way. It does not. My findings: Between bandwidth settings 2.8 and 0.30 full audio. (FL3 and FL4, 2.8K and 500Hz transitioning at 0.5) Bandwidth 0.25 abrupt total silence, FL4 (500Hz filter) (might have expected this at 0.20 instead) Bandwidth 0.20 total silence, FL5(new 200Hz filter) Bandwidth 0.15 total silence, FL5 Bandwidth 0.10 full audio abruptly returns, FL5 (unexpected) Bandwidth 0.05 full audio, FL5 (unexpected) I would have expected audio suppression at 0.2 KHz and continuing down to 0.05 KHz, when the 200 Hz filter was switched in. The fact the audio resumed when the DSP setting was at 100 and 50 Hz was unexpected. Granted, I would not normally use a notch to separate signals but would tune either high or low of the interfering signal, so this is not really a big deal. I do seem to find the most pleasing CW copy right at DSP bandwidth of 200 Hz but not less. Parameters: Band 10 MHz CW main receiver, K3 F/W MCU v04.51. 73, Dan W6DAS __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] 2m Transverter
Realize the XV144 (external transverter) is spec'd for 144 to 146MHz. Also running FM it is recommended you run at lower power than the max 20W. Most FM repeaters in the US are 145-147.999. May be different elsewhere. The internal transverter K144XV also works in 2MHz bands and switches the LO to move between 144 and 146 segments. -- View this message in context: http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/2m-Transverter-tp7564410p756.html Sent from the Elecraft mailing list archive at Nabble.com. __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Re: [Elecraft] K2: with KPA500, experience anyone?
Hello Andrew, My set up is similar to Johhny, but with the cables connected from the KPA100. I am using relatively resonant antennas, so have tuned the KPA100/KAT100 combination into a dummy load on these bands and set the KAT100 in the locked mode (sorry can't remember the correct designation) so that there is no mismatch between the output of the KPA100/KAT100 and the KPA500. Re: [Elecraft] K2: Modulation on CW signal
Hello Calvin, Welcome to the Elecraft List. Were you using a dummy load or your antenna when looking at your K2's output with an Oscilloscope? Is the frequency of the modulation/ ripple which you see equal to the sidetone frequency, or a harmonic of the sidetone's frequency, which you are using when transmitting CW? Also, if you transmit CW on another frequency in the 40m band, say 7.030 MHz, using the same power 10 watts, is the ripple still the same, any weaker, or not there at all? And lastly, do you see the ripple on all bands, or on some bands but not others, or only on 40m? Sorry for asking these many questions, but there are several possible resons why the ripple is there. 73, Geoff LX2AO On October 22, 2012 at 5:04 AM, Calvin Jones wrote: Hello, First time posting to the list. Re: [Elecraft] [KX3] Batteries - rechargeable AA's
Thanks for the info on the batteries. I went through some of the ones I have and the last batch I got are Sanyos (ordered online) and they say Japan on them. I may just charge these up and see how they work, I think they are around 2 years old (I used them in my camera and HT before). On a side note, Instead of making an external battery case... I was thinking of using the ones inside the rig. Has anyone tapped in to the wires for these and run an external plug for a charger? Is there anything I have to be careful with? I have a Micro M+ solar charge controller that I use with my SLA and was thinking of running a wire from the batter cases, through the 2m antenna port (plug right now), and put a Power Pole on the end. The controller has diodes in it so the current only goes one way. Another thought is my panel is made out of some Powerfilm panels (10 5omA strips). Last time I was out on the trials I strapped the panel to my pack. It wasn't in direct sunlight, but it was working while I was hiking. Now, how about one of those gyroscope mounts that tracks the sun? That might make my solar charging more efficient on the go HI. [Elecraft] [KPA500] Peculiar behavior : no power output on Operate
Hi, this is IW0HQE, Alessandro, from Italy, a very happy owner of the superb K-line. I would like to report what I consider a minor issue/behavior of my KPA500 power amplifier. The amplifier is working flawlessly, and I am definately very satisfied with it. Only a very peculiar event happened a couple of times during the last week : when I turned on the amplifier and put it on Oper mode, when I begun my transmission the PTT triggered correctly (the * symbol appeared as well in the leftmost part of the display) but there was no power output at all. This was solved by simpli turning the amp OFF and then back online. I will now describe the event with further details : 1) I have owned the amplifier since 18/09/2012 (one month) and the event happened only two times during the last week. 2) The first time the event happened was right after my last K3 and P3 firmware upgrades. After upgrading both the devices, I then turned on the KPA500 to work a DX station and there was no power output; turning OFF and then back ON the amp solved it. 3) The second time the event happened was a couple of days later : I was listening to some DX stations and pileups for fun, then I needed the amplifier to make a few calls, I turned ON the rear panel switch, put the amp on OPER and then begun transmitting, but still no power output. Turning the amp OFF and then ON solved it. 4) Both times the event happened, the rear panel switch was turned ON from the OFF position. 5) Power drive 20 watts. CW mode. 6) Temperature reading at the moment of the event : 22-23 °C. 7) SWR of my antenna on the band (15 meters the first time and 10 meters the second time) 1,3:1 or better. 8) HV : 74,3 9) Both the events happened after installation of Firmware Revision 04.51 and DSP 2.76. 10) I tried to turn off the amplifier after the second event without switching the real panel button in the OFF position, and the event never happened again. I cannot figure out if this is just a coincidence, but maybe it could be of some use to report it. I have seen this event, or some that have a strong resemblance have already been reported : http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/KPA-500-no-RF-until-power-cycle-td7017734.html http://elecraft.365791.n2.nabble.com/KPA500-No-power-out-in-quot-OPER-quot-mode-td7472228.html I have reported mine also, as suggested by W6FB, Jack Brindle, so that Elecraft could add this to the feedbacks already received, evaluate and (I hope) find out and solve this minor issue. Re: [Elecraft] K2: Modulation on CW signal
Calvin, Do you have anything with a transformer within 2 feet of the K2? If so, isolate the K2 by moving it away from everything and see if the ripple goes away. If the problem disappears with the isolation, you can install the optional VCOSHLDKT which shields the VFO inductor. 73, Don W3FPR On 10/21/2012 11:04 PM, Calvin Jones wrote: Hello, First time posting to the list. Re: [Elecraft] K2 Question
Christophe, That header is to select the input to the internal K2 voltmeter. If you are using that sincle wire probe that the manual instructs you to build, you will put the jumper on the two pins marked EXT, but normally you will place it on the pins marked INT Note, if you have th ejumper on EXT and do not connect a voltage to the probe, you will see an occasional LO BAT display flashed. 73, Don W3FPR On 10/22/2012 6:26 AM, Christophe F8ACF-56 wrote: hello all, control board on K2, there P7 he must put the rider in a unique position to test or not to wear? there is nothing to indicate on this jumper, so I would ask. during assembly K2 # 7369 __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

Straight plug in, no hacking up of the connector needed. http://www.aircraftspruce.com/catalog/avpages/icomptt.php I strapped the velcro around my left hand so I could work the log with my right hand. Worked very well and no fumbling for the PTT. Made life very convenient and gave me space to spread out on the rock ledge to get comfortable. Aircraft Spruce has a number of other PTTs if you fancy something else btw. 73, Christian AK4VV __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
Re: [Elecraft] K2 SSB audio problem
My experience with the K2 and the much smaller transformer in an antenna rotor control lead me to believe that it is very likely that the big transformer in the KPA500 is FM-ing your K2. The VCO shield kit is likely to solve this problem. On 10/22/2012 3:53 AM, VK1OO, Mike Walkington wrote: Hi George, I have a similar set-up, having added the KPA500 two or so weeks ago. Re: [Elecraft] [KPA500] Peculiar behavior : no power output on Operate
Hi Alessandro: I've been using a KPA500 for over a year now with my K3 / P3 equipment and not experienced the problem you described. In my case, I leave the rear panel switch On anytime I'm in the ham shack and then if I need to use the KPA500, I turn On the front panel switch - wait about 5 to 10 sec and then flip it to operate and its ready to transmit. Perhaps, someone from Elecraft could comment on whether there is a mandatory wait time between turning On the rear panel switch and turning On the front panel switch (either in standby or operate) in order to allow the internal processor time to properly initialize. 73, Doug VE3MV - Original Message - From: iw0hqe alexme...@gmail.com To: elecraft@mailman.qth.net Sent: Monday, October 22, 2012 9:14 AM Subject: [Elecraft] [KPA500] Peculiar behavior : no power output on Operate Hi, this is IW0HQE, Alessandro, from Italy, a very happy owner of the superb K-line. I’ve experienced the exact same behavior with my KPA-500 and simply turned it to stby and back to oper. I dismissed it as something that I was doing wrong and went ahead with my operating. I usually turn on my KPA-500 with my K3 PF2 programed “KPA – on” message of MN019;MP001;MN255;MN019;MP000;MN255 from page 15 of the K3 Remote manual. Then I have to cycle the KPA 500 to stby and oper. Re: [Elecraft] K3 update?
We're testing a field-test release of K3 firmware, 4.55. Release notes below. However, we have a few more changes to make before going to beta. 73, Wayne N6KR * * * MCU 4.55 / DSP 2.79, 10-10-2012 * AM TRANSMIT CAN USE THE FM FILTER: The wide (FM) crystal filter can now be assigned to AM transmit as well as FM. This can potentially free up a crystal filter slot for customers who were using the 6-kHz filter only for AM. * K3EXREF USERS MUST NOW ENABLE THE MODULE IN THE MENU: To do this, locate the CONFIG:REF CAL menu entry and tap 2 to change the setting; flashes XREF IN or XREFOUT. If you DO NOT have a K3EXREF module installed, use the XREFOUT setting (the default). If you use the XREF IN setting without a K3EXREF module installed, you may hear digital switching noise on the 6-meter band. * REMOTE-RIG (K3/0) BUG FIX: The SUB RF GAIN control now works correctly. * XVTR BAND DISPLAY FIXED FOR MICROWAVE BAND DISPLAYS: Previously, a band defined as 3400 MHz in CONFIG:XVn RF would not produce the correct display when the VFO was tuned below 3400 MHz. * PSK-D/FSK-D PROSIGN TRANSMIT FIXED: Was sending BB for BT, AA for AR, etc., always duplicating the characters. * VOX TRANSMIT TERMINATION VIA REMOTE CONTROL FIXED: The RX; remote control command will now properly terminate transmit when VOX is in use. Some customers who use VOX in audio data modes will find this useful. Previously the K3 would sometimes not exit transmit, requiring an additional RX; command. * VFO A/B REV AND SWAP DE-GLITCHED: In rare cases, swapping VFOs would generate a loud audio artifact. [Elecraft] Help choosing
Howdy K3' people: for several days I have gone over and over the fine details of accessories and must-haves on the K3 pages. The result is that I have a general idea of what I need. However, I'd like to have several users tell me what to keep on the list and what to toss-or-add. Primary concern here, usually, not always, is JT65 or CW on 10-10m. 6 meters a lot of weak signal and some EME using, again, JT65 .. meteor-scatter with FSK441 and tropo-dx with ISCAT. I want to get back onto EME on both 2m and 432 . The transverter selections actually confused me in that it's not obvious how an antenna gets connected to them. And, what's the advantage on 2m of the X-verter versus the built-into the K3? Filters ... and the TCXO ''' that seemed logical .. what filters then. Do I need a filter for each transverter as well as the second Rx and the main Rx? I like to run the CW-Skimmer. Is the K3 able to receive wider than my not-so-appropriate FT-950? Can I run JT65hf on one K3 receiver, say on 20m and the other Rx be running JT65HF-RX on 10m? Or CW-Skimmer on the other? If you here/copy someone on one RX, can youeasily/quickly switch the Tx portion to the respective receiver so as to make the call? Since the Digital modes take access to a soundcard, how are some of you using two different Bands Rx input from a soundcard to whatever program (JT6gHF, HRD, FLDigi) for example? Pardon the deeply detailed questions, I am able to do a moderate level with the old FT-950 but want more; want wider receiving sometimes; want true ability to simultaneously rx then transmit on two or more bands where xverter or main rig is listening Single-Op multi bands or whatever they call it. Thanks for the patience. If it's too complex for an Email list then just send to me direct email either way, I'd like the answer to order the right things. -- 73 KD7YZ Bob __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html
[Elecraft] Updated KX3 audio-Morse user interface (for blind operators and mobile use)
Hi all, The KX3, like the KX1, is usable by blind operators, thanks to an audio-Morse interface that can be turned on/off in the menu. Sighted operators may find the interface to be helpful, too, especially for mobile operation, since it allows eyes-free use of the radio. The KX3's implementation is not yet complete. But we just improved it by making the following changes: * Holding CWT switch on power-up turns on audio-Morse feedback and sets speed to 20 WPM. (The other way to do this is via the SW TONE menu entry, which allows you to set different code speeds. However, menu entries themselves are not yet supported by the audio-Morse interface.) * Switch activation truncates any audio-Morse output already in progress. * 'R' substituted for '.' and 'T' substituted for ‘0’ to speed up frequency reports, etc. * SWR reported after TUNE or ATU TUNE (SWRnn.n). * The receiver is now muted during all audio-Morse output. If you're interested in testing a field-test release of the KX3 firmware that includes the above changes, please contact me directly. 73, Wayne N6KR __ Elecraft mailing list Home: http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/elecraft Help: http://mailman.qth.net/mmfaq.htm Post: mailto:Elecraft@mailman.qth.net This list hosted by: http://www.qsl.net Please help support this email list: http://www.qsl.net/donate.html

My KPA500 operates wonderfully most of the time, but every once in while (perhaps one-in-ten Power-Ons), it has no Operate PA power even though the exciter asterick is normal and the Standby is normal. Parameters are as follows: KPA500, Serial 792 Exciter: Flex-3000 PWR Output: 50-Ohm Dummy Load or antenna (has no effect on PA function problem). PTT: manual switch (normal PWR asterick indicates exciter power regardless of whether PA is functioning or not). SWR LEDs Function normally except when no PA: no lights. Mode: SSB or AM HV= 74 in Standby, HV= 64 fwhen functioning normally with 100W carrier (I have not tested HV during the symptom yet, but will do so). PWR= 100W carrier (when functioning normally) Current= 5.5 (when functioning normally with 100W carrier) I hope this helps troubleshooting. 73 Hal KK6HY [Elecraft] [KPA500] Peculiar behavior : no power output on Operate To:elecraft@mailman.qth.net Hi, this is IW0HQE, Alessandro, from Italy, a very happy owner of the superb K-line. CW mode. 6) Temperature reading at the moment of the event : 22-23 ?C. [Elecraft] K3 firmware 4.55
Many of us thank you for allowing AM transmit thru the 13KHz filter. As someone who doesn't expect to use AM, except when the need suddenly arrives, having a filter slot for it was annoying. Now I can move the 2.7 filter next to the 13 and have 3 slots for SSB/CW/Digital. Are there any improvements in CW decode and CWT which was impacted by the improvements AGC in version 4.51? [Elecraft] [P3] quirk?
Playing with the P3 today I just noticed a bit of quirky behaviour. When I turn the RIT/XIT button on the K3, whether RIT/XIT is on or off, I get movement of the indicators on the P3. Split off, RIT/XIT off Marker A, marker B and cuursor B move together Split off RIT on Marker B (red), cursor B(magenta) and a very thin green line. If I rotate the knob on the P3 there are artifacts left from what appears to be the B marker. If I turn it very slowly, the artifact looks like a very broad cursor(but not the real one). David is THE MAN. He is incredible. Without his help I would have purchased way more stuff than my skill level will support. He told me exactly what I needed, and (more importantly) what I didn't. Really helped me a lot--and then he recommended I sign on the the Reflector and ask for additional input. His advice was spot-on as it turns out, and my kit shipped today... Re: [Elecraft] [P3] quirk?
Hi Mike, I'll take a stab at the first item you described. There is a configuration variable (CONFIG:VFO OFS) that you can turn ON to utilize the RIT/XIT knob to change VFO A frequency. You probably have that ON. Take a look at your K3 frequency as you turn the RIT/XIT knob to verify this. When either the RIT and/or XIT is activated the knob only controls the RIT/XIT frequency and not VFO A frequency. 73, Mike K2MK Mike-14-3 wrote Playing with the P3 today I just noticed a bit of quirky behaviour. [Elecraft] KX3
HI All I have a KX3, #262. I have an issue and I wonder if others have found the same, It's in relation to the ENCODER. There is a distinct noise as you turn the tuning knob and it is seems to be frequency sensitive. On the Bands from 1.8 to 10MHz there is No noise. On the Bands from 14 to 21MHz there is Light rasping noise. On the Bands 24MHz and 28MHz the noise Doubles to Medium. On the 50MHZ the rasping noise is double that on 28MHz and is Very annoying. The encoder I have in my KX3 is the one which is not soldered to the PC Board. Anyone else have these symptoms? Use VFO to change the setting from OFF to ON. Exit the menu. matt W6NIA On Tue, 23 Oct 2012 12:06:04 +1000, you wrote: HI All I have a KX3, #262. On the 50MHZ the rasping noise is double that on 28MHz and is Very annoying. The encoder I have in my KX3 is the one which is not soldered to the PC Board. Anyone else have these symptoms? Re: [Elecraft] KX3
Yes, everyone has these symptoms. You can help the situation some by turning on the VFO NR in the menu. You have to unlock the menu by holding the rate button for 3 seconds until it says Unlocked. This has to be done by band. Bob AF9W KX3# 1736 On Oct 22, 2012, at 7:06 PM, David Holton wrote: HI All I have a KX3, #262.
