[expert] distorted sound for user only
I just got my sound working (thanks to who ever posted their modules.conf file for me) Now the problem I have is only root has clean sound. If I logout and in as user the sound is terribly distorted. I have the same options checked in KDE 2.0 on this clean install of MDK 7.2. The computer is a laptop. Toshiba 2805. As root all sounds are fine. CD audio, KDE events, even win wav's from 2k partition. As user none of these play cleanly. I also have an issue now that since I installed lilo, the machine won't boot. Actually that may not be entirely correct, as I can't tell. The system has no video at all upon bootup, unless I use my boot floppy. I really wanted to install GRUB but it wouldn't install for me for some reason. I used linuxconf to make lilo entries then ran lilo from console. How can I restore the 2k mbr so I can try again This will be a good learning experience for future installs. Any help appreciated, Brian D. [expert] 7.2, alsa, and yamaha DS-XG
I currently bought a Toshiba S301 laptop. I have win2k on one partition and 7.2 on the other. I have most everything working great with the exception of sound and modem. I figure the Xircom modem in it is a winmodem of type. I am not so worried about that as I have ordered a 3Com pcmcia modem. My problem is getting the sound to work. It is a Yamaha DS-XG, mandrake chose to use Alsa, and that is fine. However all I get for sound is a continuous noise. What do I need to look at to get this card working? I have been to a great page on linuxnewbie.org, followed all the steps and ended with this. Before this I got some module dep. fail on bootup. Also, I chose not to install a bootloader since I didn't know if win 2k and linux would be happy with grub (preference) or lilo. If anyone could tell me if it will work if I install either one of these, that would be great too! Any help greatly appreciated, Brian D. This link explains how to install lilo after you have had grub installed: http://www.gnu.org/software/grub/grub-faq.html#q11 In short it states: For example, if you want to install the boot loader for Windows, just run FDISK /MBR on Windows. RE: [expert] 3Com US Robotics 56K faxmodem problems
Sounds like the new modem is acting just fine, and the problem may be within your lines. 115000 is what your modem will show provided you set it for max connection rate of 115000. Certain modems require in the init string W2 (for my Supra) to show the correct speed, and not the max set by your dialer. -Original Message- From: Jeff Malka [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Wednesday, December 06, 2000 7:03 AM To: expert mandrake Subject: [expert] 3Com US Robotics 56K faxmodem problems I just purchased a 3Com US Robotics 56K Faxmodem (V.90 and x2). My Mandrake 7.2 installation finds the modem and connects with it but connection is at 26400 baud. It is not the phone lines because my old 33K modem (that it is supposed to replace) connects at 115000. Could it be that the v.90 and x2 protocols need to be installed under linux and have not? [expert] linksys pcmcia 10/100 card probs
I just purchased a Sony Vaio notebook. Mandrake 7.2 works well with it. I do have a couple of problems with it though. I can't get sound to work. It is a ESS Maestro that doesn't work with my current kernel 2.2.17. Harddrake lists it as ES1987S. My main problem is the linksys 10/100 card. I purchased this due to the box stating it works well with linux (pcmpc100). However, if I set the Vaio up for a static ip address, I can not ping even my main Mandrake box this is cabled to. I am borrowing my gf's cable from her computer so I know the cable is good. And if I set the card for dhcp, and reboot, it gets an IP from somewhere. I am not running a dhcp server, and my gf's machine is statically set. my main box is 192.168.1.100, gf's is 192.168.1.110. I have tried to use her ip since I am using her cable right now, and it won't work. If I reboot my machine to win98, and set my Vaio to a static ip, I can ping the win box no probs. Any idea what is happening in linux, this is a first for me, and any help appreciated Brian D. No, I have not tried command line burning. I will attempt that this even- ing. The CD-RW is a Sony 24x4x2 (cd, cdr, cdrw) I burn all at 2x to ensure no problems with data write errors, and this used to work flaw lessly in 7.1 and older.. Brian -Original Message- From: Joseph S. When using the updater in Mandrake, at that time none of the Normal update sites had any items. [expert] WinTV card in 7.2
I have installed the 2 CD set of Mandrake 7.2. The installation was flawless on my system with one exception, when I chose Microsoft Intellimouse, the mouse shot off the screen. So I just chose standard for installation, then let mouseconfig change it to Intellimouse and all was fine. My question is that I have a Hauppauge WinTV/Radio. In previous versions of Mandrake I loaded the needed modules through rc.local. Mandrake now detects the TV cards and sets them up. I think I need to pass a bttv variable as my video is not right. How do I do this is 7.2 since modules.conf loads the module, and states that everything after the module name will be ignored? Thanks, Brian D. Most definitely not recent, or final. Hell they are using kde2rc2 (which is some of my problem). I bought it last Saturday at Walmart. I have never purchased a Mandrake, this was a first, and maybe a last. I have never heard of anyone releasing to the public (for sale) beta version without stating it was such. You should be able to load up fstab and get rid of the supermounting if you want to. Personally, I haven't had problems with it. > This is a MacMillan packaging I'm sure glad to see you stating this clearly as they seem to be denying the possiblity that this was the case. [expert] kde2 sound event sounds
I have recently purchased 7.2 complete. The installation went alright, there are a lot of things do be desired in my opinion though. However, I can not get kde2 sound events to work on this machine. I ran harddrake, and heard all the sounds. My card is a SB AWE64 value, however mandrake wants to set it up with no midi support, and windows sets it up for midi. The IRQ's and IO's are the same as in windows from harddrake detection. However after running harddrake, I get no sound at all, and linux complains about failure to initialize sound. The card is ISA. Any help appreciated! P.S. - with complete I could find no way to not install without supermount support, and the installation guide states that it was written for power pack, so not all things are the same, boy is that an understatement. RE: [expert] Is there ANYONE who installed KDE2 without any glitch on a MDK7.1?!
I upgraded a few packages, removed all kde1.x packages, and installed the tar files with no problems. KDE2 works fine --- all aspects of it. Mandrake RPM's were causing so many hassles. I don't know why they had to compile against 7.2 beta, and I still think they should have had a better README than what they put out stating upgrade these packages, and then probably others too. [...] Hello, I DID have problems installing and running KDE 2 on 7.1, but as it turns out it is not BECAUSE it was 7.1. I actually am running a bit of a hybrid 7.1/7.2/Cooker system. I upgraded a few packages too far (I know there was a reason at the time but cannot think of it now)...for instance, it appears that the version of libstdc++ you have is very important in regards to the menu rpm. I had a mismatch in the preferrred version (no warning messages, etc) for menu such that it was impossible to properly install qt2 or kde 2 rpms. Making menu and libstdc++ match by installing the rpms from 7.1 for each instead of 7.2 or Cooker corrected that problem. If you try to upgrade to menu and libstdc++ from Cooker or 7.2 you will have to upgrade a host of other rpms too - and it isn't worth it. After this, kde 2 and qt2 installed fine and run MOSTLY OK. There are problems with kde 2 itself...bugs. praedor Keep in touch with http://mandrakeforum.com: Subscribe the "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" mailing list.

You can get pretty much whatever rpms you want/need from the ftp site for rpmfind rather than the website. After the installation, kde and kdm were REAL squirrelly. Kdm would let me start kde but nothing else. The panel in kde was blank and nothing in the menus worked. During my troubleshooting, I did an "rpm -qa | grep kde" and found that ALL the kde-1.1.2 rpms had been replaced except for kdebase-1.1.2. In that one instance, I had both kdebase-1.1.2 AND kdebase-2.0-1 installed. Oops. I manually removed the kdebase-1.1.2 rpm and reinstalled kde-2.0 (all rpms) again. This time, kdm was better behaved, though it wouldn't start "failsafe". Kde was better, with proper icons, though the panel was, again, nearly useless. About half the items I tried in the kde menus did not work. That was my experience. The ONE kdebase-1.1.2 rpm did not get replaced when I did it. I had to remove it myself. As a result of this, I suggest that it would be better to FIRST remove ALL the kde-1.1.2 rpms and then install all the kde-2.0 rpms rather than depend upon them to properly replace your old kde rpms. As for the other problems I've had, I am still trouble- shooting. Hopefully, by the end of the day I will have it fixed and running. My qt IS updated. The latest qt2 packages were the first I upgraded since KDE is absolutely dependent upon it. Few questions. What version of libstdc++ do you have? What version of menu? What version of rpm? I believe these packages are the only logical possible problems, at least in my case. During rpm install of most of the KDE packages and the install of qt2, my /usr/bin/update-menus crashes/core dumps. This binary is supplied by menu. Menu requires the appropriate libstdc++ (I believe). It also, obviously, ties into the rpm install process. I am HOPING it is merely something simple like libstdc++, that all I need to do is install the proper version. During an attempt to build qt2 source several days ago, the build would fail because the configure script couldn't find libstdc++. Bizarre, because libstdc++ is right there in /usr/lib, which is in my /etc/ld.so.conf file, and I have run ldconfig in an attempt to make sure it is "known" about. praedor Keep in touch with http://mandrakeforum.com: Subscribe the "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" mailing list.

It turns out that you will have to upgrade almost everything. To install and use kde 2.0, you need to upgrade rpm and menu. These upgrades require glibc to be upgraded to THE latest (and by some accounts, broken) version. THIS breaks almost every app on your system so you also have to upgrade them (just download the latest glibc-2.96 or whatever it is and try to install it WITHOUT using the --nodeps or --force switch, you will get a LONG list of rpms that will be broken if you install it. These rpms are the same ones you would have to upgrade). I am debated breaking my stable 7.1 system just for the sake of using kde 2.0. You have to essentially make your system an unstable cooker or 7.2beta system to make all things right. praedor Keep in touch with http://mandrakeforum.com: Subscribe the "[EMAIL PROTECTED]" mailing list.

Yes it does take a lot of additional packages, like pam, bzip2, qt 2.2.1, menu, mandrake_desk, alsa (it seems), rpm 3.05 (for some packages), and the devel packages for a lot of the above and of course the kde2 files. -Original Message- From: Alexander Skwar [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Monday, October 16, 2000 6:26 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [expert] Is kde2 only for mkd 7.2? RE: [expert] Is kde2 only for mkd 7.2?
Dunno, but I am going to reinstall 7.1 on my system since trying to get kde2 to work seems impossible on my system too. Seemed odd yesterday though that kde.org had rc2 version and mandrake packages were there and they are all date stamped 10/13 however the packages wont install since I installed the ones from cooker (which are older in date) but the cooker files are claimed newer according to rpm. Cooker dates are 10/6 and 10/10 it seems. How could these files be a higher rev package when they are date stamped earlier ?? Maybe it is time to install RH on my primary machine, it is on my secondary machine with no probs then again, i dont install many things on it either cause I do like Mandrake -Original Message- From: Leopold Palomo [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Monday, October 16, 2000 6:11 PM To: Expert Subject: [expert] Is kde2 only for mkd 7.2? [expert] kdebase 1.99 still no good ?
I saw that there was a new kdebase 1.99 on cooker. I have the same problem with this one as I have since installing 1.94. It unpacks most of the way, and crashes on unpacking /users/pics/ something This is the same place as 1.94 crashed. I understand that kde2 is still in beta however if it is stamped as 1.99 should it not be ready for prime time with very few exceptions? I have removed my /opt/kde2 dir, and all the rpm's previous to 1.94. Currently I am using Helix-Gnome and due to kde not installing, getting to like Gnome. Mandrake is converting people not only from windows but from kde as well if the packages don't install. BTW My system is an Intel PII - 450, 128M Ram, 6.4G IDE HD, Sony CDRW (IDE), Zip 100, with a Matrox Millennium Video. Kde has worked fine for me up to the 8/10/2000 release. Brian D. RE: [expert] KDE 2 problems continue..
I just installed the 1.94 rpm's from cooker the night before last. I can not get kde2 to work hardly at all. However, kdebase would not install from the rpm. I d/l'ed it twice from different sites and the same error of some file being unable to be unpacked. kde2 will come up, but hardly anything works. Anyone know where to find a good rpm for kdebase? Also, I can not rpm -e any kde files. I was thinking of removing kde altogether and then try a fresh install of it. rpm -e file.rpm wont let me due to dependency probs. It even feels faster. You can get them at this page on the kde.org site. http://koffice.kde.org/install-binaries.html In general I was really happy with what I am seeing. I had the following problems on install. 1. openssl must be installed. It won't work without it. It needs certain libs. 2. It can never find /usr/bin/perl even if it exists. So when it balks just install the rpm --nodeps and it works fine. 3. The page above has links to pages that first give you an order to install kde2 and allow you to run kde2 in parallel with kde even sharing apps between the two. 4. It has the same bug in K(menu) > panel > Edit Menu as kde1 on 7.1 *sigh* otherwise it seems to be headed in the right direction. The interface is very smooth. Well, what I really look for is something with Tree-based file-system view (long filanes get to be a pain on text-based FTP), and a QUE functionality, wherby I can add a ton of files from anywhere to a QUE, then transfer them. For small stuff I still and probably always will just use the text-based ftp program. However, the industry (their are people out there who are GUI only that might want to use a little linux) still doesn't have a perfect GUI ftp client yet, although GFTP is 70% there, if not 90% there, all it really needs is a QUE functionality like Cute-FTP, and maybe a MP3 file search like Cute-FTP, and that would be 100% what the industry needs .02 Given Eric Aksomitis http://www.dlcwest.com/~jed/re_answer.shtml

Putting noauth in /etc/ppp/options worked for me without the above user error, however pppd just dies as soon as I login to ISP. Haven't figured out this one yet. Brian D. [expert] 3 probs with 7.0 left
I have three problems left to deal with on my 7.0 install. 1) No stereo sound, it is mono out of two speakers (sound card is a AWE64 Value) 2) How do I get my clock not to set hardware clock (accident hit during install, off by a lot, seems resetting upon reboot.) 3) CD-Rom was always hdd, but had to make it sr0since cd/rw. Zip drive was always hdb4. They are IDE. However now zip has to be sda4 (I think). Anyways the CD/RW wont work for nothing. I did install supermount Any Ideas? This is all the problems I have right now at least. Brian D. Klar - CVE OTS WPAFB (937)257-5773 937-973-3125 (Pager)

RE: [expert] mandrake 7 probs revisited
Thanks for the help on the pppd problem. As soon as I read the message, I did remember reading that a while back. Then I was running 6.1 and just brushed it off. pppd now connects, however, I cant surf at all. There is no errors given, just sets there twirling the N logo I couldn't get X to redo, so since I just installed 7.0 I decided to re-install it. I have the above pppd prob and also my cd-rw (/dev/sr0 /mnt/cdrom) will not operate My zip drive used to be (/dev/hdb4 /mnt/zip) and now is /dev/sda4 /mnt/zip. Why did this happen. I think if I can get it back to /hdb4 my cdrom will work. All of my drives in the system are IDE. I have a : /hda1 - Win98 /hda5 - Win /hdc1 - Win (data storage) / swap I chose to install supermount since it worked so well at the office. Although there I don't have but one hd and one cdrom (IDE) Is this a supermount prob (I know little about it) I see a reinstall coming since my inet won't let me surf Thanks all, Brian D. [expert] mandrake 7 probs revisited
I just installed Mandrake 7 yesterday. I cant get pppd to work. It states something like "The remote computer is requested to authenicate itself I however am unable to supply [secret] password to get an IP address" something like this. This does not change whether I am Root, or user. Actually if from a terminal window I type "pppd" I get the same response. I installed as low security, tried to change to medium security, no difference I setup ppp from within linuxconf, and entered a name and "secret" password to no avail I usually use kppp. I have changed permissions on pppd, no good. The modem dials out and makes a connection, then pppd died unexpectedly. Second, I have managed to crash my X. I get an errno 111, something about TransSocket error, cant find font "fixed". Is there a way to fix this?? I recieved the disc with my purchase of Maximum Linux magazine (Real good I might add) Brian D. Klar - CVE OTS WPAFB (937)257-5773 937-973-3125 (Pager)

RE: [expert] Use of Windows may be hazardous to your Linux
I have had problems with Win defrag on my dual boot system. 98 does something to my secondary drive. That drive is partitioned 2Gig for Win and 4Gig for linux. This drive was partitioned with linux fdisk. I had to turn off defragging my second drive altogether. RE: [expert] IP Masq problems (Resolved somewhat)
Well last night I double checked everything on the Win box. DNS, Gateway, IP. Everything is setup as before. This machine is my gf's. ftp to outside, great. Telnet to Linux machine, fine, print fine. Checked route on Linux, fine. Kept starting and closing IE. Nothing, the restarted IE and just went to some site like redhat.com, and it made it there. However now that it can surf, I cant telnet into my Linux machine from here at the office. Any Ideas why I gain one and lose another?? -Original Message- From: Alan Shoemaker [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Thursday, April 13, 2000 6:57 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [expert] IP Masq problems Brianhave you checked your settings in Win98 networking? Like the gateway ip address, is it still there? When a change in the network environment occurs Windows is famous for losing settings and losing links to drivers. A good idea might be to remove the tcp/ip bindings to your network card and then reinstalling them (you'll need your windows installation cd for that).
