Re: Adapter for cig lighter

2005-07-21 Thread Don and Jan Stowe

Any recommendations on an adapter to use my iBook in the car? I see
that Linksys has one that will actually allow you to plug a 2 or
3-prong plug into it, while others (APC was one that I saw) just
allows you to plug the ibook into the lighter. The APC one is $40
while the others were $80.

TIA,

Diane
I use a 100 watt inverter. It works both for charging my cell phone
and using my ibook.
I bought mine at Office Max. Make sure that the inverter wattage is
large enough for your computer.

issues with connecting directly via an ethernet cord on my laptop

2005-07-21 Thread J Schooster
Whoa is me! Long time mac user, first time powerbook
user ...

I recently purchased a shiny new 17" G4 powerbook.
It's fun and fast and I love it ... except, I am
clueless when it comes to networking stuff. I'm a
designer, not a network admin :(

I first got the laptop, opened it, started it up, and
it immediately recognized my wireless Verizon DSL and
connected to the internet asap. I was thrilled.

Well, I told the peeps at work, that I wanted to be
able to connect to the network and they told me I had
to setup a VPN (Virtual Private Network). They gave me
the info, showed me where to fill it in on my mac, and
told me to take it home and test it out.

I did, and nothing. It doesnt recognize it at all.
When I am at work, and they can essentially pretend
like it's not on our network (not sure how they do
this) and poof, it works. I get home, and I get the
error that the "Connection was terminated by the
communication device."

So, my network admin told me to take the computer
home, and plug the ethernet cable directly into the
powerbook and try. I went home, turned off my modem,
pulled the ethernet cable from my router, and put it
in my computer, started the modem back up, and my
Network preferences on my Mac say that the ethernet
cable is connected and so is the Internet.

BUT - it isnt. I cant access the web in any browser,
cant connect to AIM, etc. So I call Apple...

First, apple tells me to go into my Network
Preferences and enable PPPoE. I told him I didnt need
this when I originally setup the computer (in fact,
it's never been enabled), and he told me that was
impossible. After a 5 minute lecture on why this isnt
possible (as I sit browsing the internet with only
TCIP enabled), he then tells me to do the same thing
my IT guy at work said to do, and of course, it doesnt
work.

The tech then asks if I've purchased AppleCare. I told
him I did, and I've been waiting for a month now for
the information to come in the mail.

The Apple tech says that it must be a problem with my
DSL. I said we had other laptops previously, and had
no problems with them, and we have two desktops
connected to the router with no problem? He says he
cant help me unless I have my login stuff for the
PPPoE connection - which of course, I dont. I'm not
even sure what he's talking about.

THEN. I unplug the ethernet, and Airport picks back up
and my Internet Explorer is no longer working. Safari
picks up the connection, but not IE. He tells me that
IE is a "dangerous" program, and that Microsoft isnt
even supporting it anymore and that nobody is using it
anymore.

I laughed out loud. That was it.

Any guidance here? Anyone else have any issues with
connecting over a home network via Airport (TCIP) but
not being able to connect directly through an ethernet
connection?

Just for the record - I have a Verizon DSL. We have
two desktops (a mac and pc) hooked up to a router that
have no problems, and my husband had a PC laptop for
years that had a wireless card that worked fine.

Sorry if I'm ranting, but I'm just at a loss. The
Apple tech basically said that it "might" be a
hardware issue, or it "might" be my DSL / router. That
was about as much help as I got out of him.

I appreciate anyone's guidance.

Well Mike, you can always get a new LCD top half on eBay for pennies on
the dollar. I recently saw one for Wallstreet up for auction that sold
for $86.00. Just another idea. Also, have you checked the inverter?
The inverter is a slim board that fits below your LCD and usually sell

inverter was all that was wrong with the LCD.

Re: Pismo PowerBook display failing

get it for you.

The PowerBook Guy has a great selection, but he's a wee bit expensive;
I don't think I've ever bought anything from him, as I can usually find
better sources. In any case, I can get the bulb; see below.

Jeffrey Gaier wrote:

While I had my Pismo in being serviced for a logic board problem, my

logic board replacement. I honestly don't remember if it was the
screen or video card, but they (the local mac repair shop) replaced it
right away and just told me the problem occured and they fixed it.

From what I've read (see below) the pink/red color is mostly likely the
bulb growing old; of course replacing the whole display with one with a
good bulb would fix it.

I've owned my Pismo since new and I think I've spent at least 1500 in
additional repairs and upgrades to it. By far compared with my 17"
powerbook thePismo is still a great computer.

Indeed, I'm very fond of mine, but am thinking seriously of moving up
to a 17" G4, for added display space and power. I haven't tried 10.4
yet, but although a recent upgrade to 550MHz G4 considerably enhanced
the Pismo's ability to work with OS X, it's still frustratingly slow at
times. I'll certainly miss the Pismo's ergonomics, especially the
one-hand trackpad; the G4 PBs' design is very snazzy looking, but less
usable, requiring two hands for the trackpad, which is annoying.

Thanks for the responses to my query. I was wondering if there might be
any new information in the user community since the last time I
researched this. For any who might be interested, here's the
information I have:

Pismo LCD Lamp And Display Replacement, by Charles Moore
Information for do-it-yourself &

Bulb available from Digi-Key for $13 (search for part #289-1108-ND)

Wegener Media: bulb $70, replacement service $200

The Last Pismo Upgrade, by Norman Shutler
Reviews bulb replacement and further brightness enhancements by
IDParts, Inc.

IDParts quotes bulb replacement at $95

Not sure of the details yet, but at this price I'd rather pay to have
it done than try to do it myself; I've taken apart a lot of PowerBooks,
but dismantling display panel assemblies is more stress than I'd care
to deal with. Used to do my own auto tuneups, too, but now I pay a real
mechanic who can do in an hour what took me an afternoon.

I actually have two more 'Pismo' PowerBooks, in addition to my own
trusty companion (which has a 550MHz G4, 40GB HD, 640MB RAM), which I'm
preparing to sell; at least one will also need the bulb replaced. As
for take-apart, I have the Apple service manual, and excellent
instructions are provided online at, inter alia:

2005-07-21 Thread Francesco sciacca
thanks all for the suggestions and help, I'll pass them on to ensure she
gets on the right tracks from the outset.

My question about the registration was more not related to warranty, but
more to making a link from serial number to the actual owner of the machine.
I was warned in the past that it's useful in case the PB is lost or stolen.
I don't know it that link is autoamtically in place when you buy it (I doubt
it) or if it becomes affective with the registration or if else is needed.

Good to know that 3 months apple care are included after the online
registration. That might be a good place to ask.

thanks again and cheers,

However, I just tried the unsubscribe link (G-Books-

MCE has the best price I've seen. I've bought two from them and both
have worked fine.

I prefer the auto adapter as it's more compact than the power
inverter and AC adapter route. Especially as I use it with a portable
battery pack sometimes.

However you can buy an inverter for much less than $80. Drug,
department, auto part and other stores all carry them for $30-40 or
so.

Mike,

Are you using a Pismo? If so, you can simply plug in a USB mouse and
USB keyboard, and with the external monitor connected, boot the Pismo
using the USB devices with it closed. Hope this helps,

Re: New PB G4: questions

2005-07-21 Thread Amber

Hi there,

Congrats to your friend on her new purchase. I am sure she will be
very happy with it. I certainly have enjoyed my 15" Al PB since
purchasing it in 2003.

On 21-Jul-05, at 4:20 AM, Francesco sciacca wrote:

Registering the PB with Apple basically allows her access to her
complimentary 90 days of phone/tech support. After that, if she
chooses to purchase Applecare, she would have a total of 3 years of
phone support available to her in addition to having hardware
coverage for the same amount of time. However, she has a year in
which to purchase Applecare.

All I know of is the Applecare plan which is directly connected to
the serial number. When you call in for tech support of any kind,
they will normally always ask for the serial number before they
answer any questions.

the battery. Was it charging up for some time, or discharging it to

I have had my PB for over two years now and initially was instructed
to leave it unplugged and run the battery down to where you get the
reserve battery power warning. Then turn it off and plug in the
power, allowing it to charge until full (the color on the power
adapter will go from orange to green). Then I just started using
it. I am still impressed with the length of use I get on each charge.

I am not sure if anything has changed with the new PB's, but this
would be a good opportunity for her to call Applecare and ask
whatever questions she has about getting started. After all, It is
free for her for the first 3 months.

What I got from reading the manual and apple and other online stuff
re: new powerbook batteries was this:

Charge it up, then one deep discharge, to the point of laptop
shutdown, to calibrate the "time remaining" feature of the power
manager. Then don't deep discharge it again if you can help it,
you'll lose some capacity each time you do that. Although you may
have to do it again sometime in the future if the time remaining
estimate gets messed up somehow.

From reading of lithium battery tech in general, they really like to
be kept topped up all the time, unlike other battery types you won't
hurt them by having them plugged in always, you should actually get
better a lifespan out of them that way.

For long term storage, cooler, dry place (not a frig) at 40% charge
is best. Like a basement cupboard maybe.

They lose capacity whether in use or not so for lithium ion
batteries, a couple laptop battery places said that it doesn't make
sense usually to buy a "spare" unless you're really going to use it
actively and get the most out of it while it is freshest.

On my 1.5 month old 12" PB, I get 3.5 to 4 hrs work time on it,
depending on what I'm doing. Lots more system uptime really since
usually ends up asleep for a while until I come back to it. I still
can't believe that I can burn a couple CDs, DVDs, etc while on
battery and still have plenty of juice left to do other work. Nice!

HTH.

Not sure about the initial registration, e.g. If it's enough to register it.
If you have an Apple ID, then I would suggest you login into their support
section and you should have an option that will tell you how many days
remain on your warranty, if you have one. So, you'll know if you've been
registered or not. Not sure about the additional services, never heard
about it. As for the battery, read the user guide that comes with it. There
are instructions for the 1st charge so you might want to follow them...

You mean for warrantee coverage, proof of ownership and such? It
should, here in the states you don't need to register anything to get
such coverage, but I don't know about the UK. Hold onto the receipt;
that's the main thing of proof of purchase. If you got Applecare,
there should be instructions with it to ensure activation.

Well, they send you spam if you give them your e-mail address and if
you don't check the 'don't send me mail' box.

to maintain whwn not used for long times.

The best procedure, as I understand it is to put the battery through
several charge/recharge cycles right away. Charge it up, use it on
the battery until the system says to charge the battery, repeat.

If it's going to sit on the desk for a long time, only using the AC
adapter, take the battery out. If you're going to store it, store it
in a cool, dry place, preferably in a ziplock with a silicon dry
pack. You don't need to refrigerate it, barring that you live in the
tropics.

The current LiIon batteries do NOT like to be discharged to the bone

I just make sure it's unplugged before the car is turned on or off

I've actually had an external monitor hooked up this whole time for that
very reason. It ended up simulcasting on both.

I got it to work! But it won't work with the keyboard. If I hook one of the
three up it won't power on, without the keyboard hooked up it works fine.
This is driving the 14 LCD at 1024x768, haven't checked the VRAM tho.

I'm gonna try different top plastics and see if that fixes it. Got to tear
it down again though.

Hmmmwith the keyboard in, can you do a power manager reset (from
either keyboard ?).
