[LegacyUG] Christening Baptism
Surely others may have the same problem... Some of my ancestors were of a church that only Christened shortly after the birth of a child. Baptism didn't take place until perhaps years later. [LegacyUG] GEDCOM in wrong extension
Thanks all for the suggestions; however I had already done just as Dale had suggested. I did it again making certain that I had completed every step Dale suggested and then ran a new GEDCOM but still got the FTM extension. I went to My Computer, down to Legacy folder and to the GEDCOM folder to look at the new GEDCOM. Wish I could copy and paste something into this message but this is what it looks like and says, the icon is a treetrunk with branches, William Marshall.ged, under Type is says FTW GEDCOM File, then today's date. In reply to Dennis, I do have FTM on my computer but haven't used it for months; however, looking at the previous GEDCOMS in the Legacy file going back for nearly a year, they all say FTW GEDCOM File, so FTM must capture and hold Legacy hostage unless the whole FTM program is deleted Legacy User Group guidelines: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Etiquette.asp Archived messages: http://www.mail-archive.com/legacyusergroup@legacyfamilytree.com/ Online technical support: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/Help.asp To unsubscribe: http://www.LegacyFamilyTree.com/LegacyLists.asp

Re: [LegacyUG] missing ibid
In this example, my source citation is identical throughout; consequently, if I have 10 uses of in my report, when I preview it before printing, the Sources in the back of my report repeats that source 10 times. When I had the option to use the ibid, the full source would print out once and then the other 9 times it would print ibid. To me, it was a much cleaner and clearer presentation of the sources. How do you get the Legacy report referencing the earlier footnote number (for identical sources)? Is that something happens only when the report is sent out to a printer or to a website rather than just previewed before printing? - Original Message - From: Ward Walker To: LegacyUserGroup@legacyfamilytree.com Cc: Legacy Support, Brian Sent: Friday, June 12, 2009 2:00 PM Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] missing ibid But... Isn't your source listing even more compact, when a Legacy report references the earlier footnote number (for identical sources)? Not even a line is required for printing ibid and using a new footnote number. If your repeated sources have differences in the source detail, then that's where the 'subsequent citation' comes in. Yes, it is not as compact as ibid, p.31, but it is more compact than the original citation at least, and it has the advantage of also being applicable when the repeated citations are not consecutive in the footnote list. Let's throw our energy behind getting this system to work properly. Then implementing something like the 'ibid, p.31' example would be a minor variant on 'subsequent citations' in the special case where the footnotes are adjacent. IMHO. Thanks to Ron for the answer to the 1/2 siblings question. I hadn't realized that it wasn't printing out showing all the little 1/2s until you mentioned it. Question 2: I have lots of people in my database that appear as singles because I don't know if they ever married or who they married. When I did a preview of the descendant narrative, I find all the people who have no marriage partner listed not have a not saying, John married someone. [LegacyUG] Stumpted regarding how to set up the 1/2 sibling properly
A man was married 3 times. He and his 1st wife had 6 children. He and his 2nd wife had 3 more. He and his 3rd wife had no children. Wouldn't he and his 1st wife only show the first 6 children; then he and his 2nd wife would show the 1st six children as 1/2 children with the name of the first wife in parens. Finally, he and his 3rd wife would show all 9 children (the census shows them all still living with the man and his 3rd wife) with 1/2s for all the children, the 1st 6 with then name of the 1st wife in parens and the last 3 children with the name of the 2nd wife in parens. [LegacyUG] Dropbox questions
I've really fallen in love with this program but have only used it to automatically transfer my Legacy data from one computer to another (both mine and both running the same version of Legacy updates and I'm located in California). Questions: What happens if Legacy has another update and I install it on my main computer but NOT on the other one? Will that confuse the Dropbox program? My cousin in Florida does NOT have Legacy on her computer, nor does she have any other genealogy program. I want to send her the family tree so that she can add informtion about her part of the family. Does she have to have the paid version of Legacy on her computer or will the transfer work on the free version? Then she will send it to Dropbox and I get it on my computer My other cousin lives far away from me as well and uses FTM. I want to send him the family tree so that he can add his part. How does he go about doing this? Would he download the free Legacy, make a GEDCOM with his FTM, move it over to the Legacy and then use Dropbox to send it back to me? Re: [LegacyUG] Using Dropbox to sync Legacy

Please email me at kin-hunte...@cox.net so I can keep this offline. - Original Message - From: Kathy Cardoza To: LegacyUserGroup@legacyfamilytree.com Sent: Wednesday, February 04, 2009 11:29 AM Subject: [LegacyUG] Using Dropbox to sync Legacy Hi Everyone I apologize in advance for the length of this post but I wanted to share with everyone how I am keeping my Legacy files synced and current between my two computers as I think this is a concern to many of us that use more than one computer. I routinely work on both my computers in Legacy, adding and changing the data. I try to keep it all sorted in my little brain as to which one was the most up-to-date copy, but it isn't always easy to do that and sometimes I'm just not 100% sure which one I used last. I fear I was overwriting newly created data on occasion. Enter Dropbox. I have been using this for a while now to keep various files in sync between my two computers and it works beautifully. I had even been backing up my Legacy files to Dropbox so that each computer had access to backups in the same (synced) location, but now I'm actually storing my Legacy Data files in Dropbox and it works great! To explain . First, to learn more about Dropbox, go to http://www.getdropbox.com/. Basically, it is a FREE little program that you download and install on each of your computers that you'd like to keep in sync. On each computer, it creates a Dropbox folder. Whatever you put into that folder, gets synced to your Dropbox account on the Internet and then to your other computer(s) with the same setup. It happens very quickly, usually within seconds, depending on the size of the file. The beauty of this, is that it only depends on the Internet to do the syncing, so your data sits in the Dropbox folder on your computer, always available to you. You don't have to access it on the Internet. AND, that same data now sits on the Dropbox server as an off-site backup to you AND available to you from any computer, anywhere through the web interface! It can't get any better than this! This was recently written about by Dick Eastman in a recent Plus version of his newsletter and he sings its praises highly. I had used it before but his newsletter gave me the idea to use it to store and sync my Legacy data files. I'm so glad I did. Dropbox only syncs changes when you close a file. So, in Legacy, when I am through working in my file, I close it (you don't have to quit the program) and it immediately syncs to my Dropbox folder, then to the Internet, then to the Dropbox folder on my other computer. No more wondering if I am using the most current version of my data! This is free and works on both Macs and Windows. You are allowed 2GB of storage space and you can pay for more if you need it. Oh, and by the way, it works beautifully if you are a Mac user like I am, using Legacy from within Parallels or one of the other virtualization programs. Legacy knows to look for my data in the Dropbox folder and all my images and documents I link to from my Mac folders. I hope this may provide a solution to some of you. If you've been thinking or wondering about Dropbox, give it a try. You won't be sorry! Mary, You see the same flaw I see with Gene's method and no, unfortunately the table fix was not included in version 7; however, I am told that it's been proposed, at least, to the programmers. Brian, I'm running Version 7 fully updated on an XP machine, also fully updated. I went to the Include Main Entries For and ticked the Standard Format as you requested. I also have Show line back to starting person and Show spouses for children who will have a main entry ticked. Then I ran the Preview of the report with the error and the error is still there. The first person (Sarah McKaig) is married and her husband died in 1911; that is correct. The following person (Margaret McKaig) was not married but she adopted a child. It is the entry for Margaret on the report tht shows the incorrect d. 1911. Could it have something to do with me going to the Marriage Information, then Wording Options screen for Margaret and doing an override for the wifes' first marriage, She never married. Howard Duff was adopted. Of course the icon for the spouses on the basic information page lights up and if clicked on the Husbands of Margaret McKaig it shows unknown. Can you suggest a more correct way to do all of this if it will clear up all the problem and still show the adopted child? Or does some change need to be made to the program to accomodate relationships like this? Hi all, I'm am stumped! I have a female relative who never married but adopted a child. By going into tne Marriage Events for my aunt and changing the wording under the Wording Options from married someone that was in the box for whatever reason (I didn't put it there) to She never married; child was thought to be adopted. I managed to change the sentence on a report to something more correct. HOWEVER, there is a lingering d. 1911 that must have been part of the original thought that Legacy picked up somewhere. I'd like to eliminate it and have searched all the notes and everywhere else for it w/o success. Can someone help? Also, in the Family screen for her, it shows the icon for a husband lighted. When I click on it, the Husbands of .. screen comes up and shows Unknown for her husband. Has anyone figured out a way to make that go away? I can't unlink or delete it w/o losing the adopted child. If there is no way to do this, Sherry (Support), how about a fix; perhaps a default to a marriage/relationship but a way to click that off on that screen only if there was no marriage/relationship. [LegacyUG] Addendum to my relative who never married but adopted a child problem
Sherry and all, I think the part of my problem about the lingering d. 1911 may be some sort of bug. I've been playing around with trying different things after noticing that the sister preceding my relative had married someone who died in 1911 and show that in the descendant report printout of all the family. So I removed the death date for that party and then tried the descendant report again - and the d. 1911 that was the wording I wanted to get rid off disappeared for my relative. Of course, it is also missing as the death date for the husband of my relatives next oldest sibling as well. When I put the death date back in for that husband it reappears as the lingering d. 1911 in my relatives report. [LegacyUG] The new Invisible in Legacy 7
Has anyone used the invisible option for some people in their database yet? If so, is everything about the person including the name, etc., just missing in a printout or is everythng except the name missing? Curious why you used it as well rather than just marking them living. [LegacyUG] Curious why: difference between contains and equal to
I set up my search equation to find all parties in the database that (1) do not have a birth date OR (2) do not have a death date and in the How to look I first chose contains and in the What to look for I left blank, but that didn't accomplish what I wanted. I went back to the search equation and chose Equal to leaving everything else the same and that worked. Now I'm curious why; it would seem that, at least in this case, both mean the same. Re: [LegacyUG] saving file, etc
Bill, You were right on. I received a message from our Sherry Support stating virtually the same thing. So the problem wasn't in how I was trying to save a family file but was in not saving the various setups of the customized columns. Hadn't thought of that just taking it for granted that once a file was saved, everything about that file had been saved. Something new learned! Thanks to all for your suggestions. And yes, there would have been several different ways to set up the demo but this one really shows some of the more unknown capabilities of Legacy. If this is the case then here's how... 1. In index view right mouse click on the column heading above the names. 2. Click on customize. In the pop-up, select the colums you want displayed and then on the right side of the pop-up click save. In the next pop-up give it a file name and save it. 3.Modify the colums again then save to a different name. 4.Do this for as many views as you need. Then the next time you right click on the header above the names in the list it will let you select one of the saved views. [LegacyUG] Error 6145
Thanks to all for your suggestions. I'd like to explain what I was doing and what apparently triggered the 6145 error. I wanted to do the descendant report (not the descendant book) setting it for 3 generation and wanted to include columns for descensants, sex, birth date, birth place, 1st marriage, place of marriage, 2nd marriage, place of marriage, death, place of death, general notes and research notes. I could do this type of report under chronology without a problem but could only include one individual and wanted to do the repoort for 3 generations. Apparently the descendant report can't handle that OR perhaps it's Microsoft that can't handle that since Kay found an error 6145 under Microsoft windows errors. PLEASE NOTE: Legacy/Microsoft Windows COULD handle the request for the multiple generation report giving all of the information I had requested EXCEPT when I tried to add all the notes - then I got the error 6145 - apparently just more than their little brains could handle. Thanks Ron. I'd like to post my database on Ancestry (it's been on Rootsweb for years). After I submit a complete GEDCOM (not privatized), Rootsweb allows me to control what will and will not be shown and I don't show anyone who was born in 1910 or after unless there is a death date for them. Unfortunately Ancestry doesn't give me that kind of control so I've never sent them a GEDCOM Legacy will let me fix the database so that I can outwit Ancestry (I hope). Re: [LegacyUG] Attached Files
Don, and any other interested parties, Not to be hard-nosed, but there is a difference between included within a message and an attachment to a message. I was able to cut and paste a picture of the EVENTS screen INSIDE the message (not as an attachment to). In fact, if you take a good hard look at my message, you can see the gap where the picture was. There was NO attachment. Somehow, the software on the LUG interpreted the inserted picture as an attachment. I'll let you computer geniuses figure that one out. Re: [LegacyUG] Using EVENTS for census info WAS Linda Altman's census templates ;
I think there would be too much information and it would either overflow the little box/area used for description when printing a FAMILY Group Record or it might force the little box so far that it would corrupt the date field. I have had problems (see archives) with the date field when trying to print out the Family Group Report. Everything looks good on the computer screen but doesn't always dprint out that way. The problem involve trying to use a date like from 1884-Jan 1886 or between 1884-Jan 1886. The Report would print out okay if I changed it to read 1884-1886 but then to compensate for the now missing information I had to find another place to add the reason for the Jan 1886 date. Not a great problem. It appears that the boxes under the Family Group Report have a normal for the program setting and all BUT the Date column will expand to some degree if the information contained is longer than what the program is designed for. Hope you follow this, I can't find a better way to explain it. - Original Message - From: Randolph Clark To: LegacyUserGroup@legacyfamilytree.com Sent: Monday, July 30, 2007 1:25 PM Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] Linda Altman's census templates Why not use the (empty) description field for the Roll, Page Image info? On 7/30/07, Pat Jones [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: I followed the advice of a very active and knowledgable local Legacy user (and member of this group) when I first started using Legacy about a year ago. She suggested that she used the notes section under EVENTS for displaying the census information, i.e. She added the full information for all parties shown in the census for the Head of Household, continuing that way for each census year the main party was found (in the case above, Robert Marshall). As the children broke off and were found elsewhere, they then became the head of their own household (even if single) and had the full information listed under their name. If you could look at my database, you would see that after I have entered all this information under the Head of Household, under the EVENTS notes for each individual in the census information (in this case, Mary and all the children), I have listed ONLY the information found for that individual. PROs to this method: I have the full information at my fingertips when I do research and don't have to look under the scattered SOURCES. My database if designed for my optimal research capabilities, NOT for conciseness. It also enables anyone looking at my database to see the information at a glance. This method had enabled me to find several pieces of information that I was missing and couldn't find until I set the database up this way. The census information prints out in chronological order immediately below the name and general information for the individual in the Family Group Record which I use most often. CONs you have a lot of sources, which I don't mind at all; I use the ibid feature to cut down on some of them. Not all Legacy reports will set up this way; I wish I could get the Descendant Report to set up like the Family Group Report, for instance. It doesn't even allow Sources unfortunately - bad mistake in MHO. [LegacyUG] Help with box size for Family Group Record report
Is there a way to change the size of the various boxes for events when printing a Family Group Record repot? I have, in the date column, 1883-Jan 1884. It looks fine on the screen under the persons page; however, when I try to print it, I get 1883-Jan 1~. I am assuming the ~ means there is information that can't print within the box size. Re: [LegacyUG] run-time error 429
Sherry (and all others using Spybot Search Destroy) After I had sent the help message, I did try running the Check/Repair but that did nothing ; then, before I got your message this morning, I tried running Microsoft's System Restore and moving back to a time prior to the weekly clean-up of my computer. Then I tried running Legacy and it worked perfectly. So my gut level feeling was that something had happened when I ran one of the cleanup programs on my computer (Spybot, AVG, AdAware, CCleaner and Registry Mechanic). So I looked to see what each program had removed starting (fortunately) with Spybot. It was ICQ-SpyMonitor. Then I went to the internet and looked that up. The first site up happened to be ICQ-Spymonitor - Safer Networking Forums on which I found a post from you. Apparently by removing the supposed spyware program, for which Spybot appears to have thrown a false positive, it removed some coding that Legacy needs to run. After making certain Legacy was running properly and that I had a clean backup, I next tried cleaning up the computer with AVG and AdAware, neither of which caused any problems; however, I am still left with the supposed spyware ICQ-SpyMonitor on my computer which does bother me. So now the question is should I go ahead and run the check/repair again and then, if that does nothing, follow through with the other instructions on that help? How about the Spybot issue? Since you responded on the Safer Newworking Forum, I presume you also use Spybot? Re: [LegacyUG] need help in fixing this problem
Let's see if I can explain this better. I think I have multiple problems. Joseph married three times by his 1st wife Elen, he had only one child, Ann by his second wife Sarah, he had two more, David and Thomas I entered Ann as the daughter of Joseph and his first wife correctly. Then, somehow I also entered the two boys as sons of Joseph and his first wife. I need to remove them and only have the two boys show up under Joseph and his 2nd wife. The two boys are also doubled under the first wife - once as if they are natural sons of Joseph and Ann, once as if they are natural to Joseph, step to Elen. When I switch to the 2nd wife, Sarah, Ann shows as a 1/2 (correct), but I have one set of sons, Thomas and David as natural to both Joseph and the 2nd wife (correct) and a repeat set as natural to Joseph and 1/2 to Elen (incorrect). I'm not at all certain how to clean up this mess. - Original Message - From: Susan Daily [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Thursday, April 12, 2007 4:32 PM Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] need help in fixing this problem Pat, Go to the individual view for one of the duplicated children. Re: [LegacyUG] need help in fixing this problem
Hmmm. I just did that but the two boys are still connected to father and 1st wife (incorrect) as well as father and 2nd wife (correct). They show as 1/2s under father and 1st wife. When I right click on them under the father and 1st wife, neither show up on the Children's setting, just the daughter which should be there. I checked both boys to see if they each have duplicates. That problem is corrected. It is the same two individuals showing up as children for the father and 1st wife and the father and 2nd wife. They are children of the father and 2nd wife only (the 1st wife was dead). I don't think the program is supposed to be showing these two boys as 1/2s of the dead wife. But I can't make it stop doing that. - Original Message - From: Sandy [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Thursday, April 12, 2007 5:48 PM Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] need help in fixing this problem Hi Pat, Not sure if this will help. I believe the simplest way is to initially 'unlink' the incorrect mother/wife from the husband. i.e rightclick wife and click 'unlink' from husband - this is only temporary - the sons will stay with the husband, and hopefully still with their original mother. Then you will have the father only showing one named wife, but also showing the father with an 'unknown' person as mother of the first daughter. If you click on that 'unknown' wife/mother you should then be offered to 'add a new person or 'link to existing person' and the little box 'add this person to the currently displayed marriage needs to be checked. You should select Link to an existing person and then you can reattach wife #1 only to the husband and daughter #1. Hope that isnt' too complicated. Once you click on that, it will run through your entire data base and click the box so the detail now appears. This is like a toggle on/toggle off switch. [LegacyUG] Where to put Notes
All, need some help with Notes. I've looked through the manual and LUG archives but haven't found the answer. I have chunks of information from various sources (books, individuals, newspapers, etc) that I want to include when any of the reports are printed. It seems to me the logical place to put them would be under Notes. I see an icon on that entry page to click on to give sources, clicked on that and entered the sources, expecting to see it print out in a report - but it didn't - and I don't see any place to make it do so. So I went to the manual and archives for help but didn't find the answer in either. I did, however, see a suggestion to a note to the bottom of my information giving a short source which I have done and like the idea. So the question remains - why isn't the full source printing out in the reports? Have you unlocked the real power of Legacy? Legacy 6.0 Deluxe has 92 features not found in the Standard Edition. Re: [LegacyUG] quick genealogy question
I'm mostly working on the 1860 Illinois census, various places from farms to small towns. I find the word used somewhat sporadically through the various census. At first I thought it depended on the census taker but even within the work done by one census taker it was not always consistant. In reading The Source, 3rd Edition, I find that the census taker was to list the occupation of everyone over the age of 15. My guess now is that the word is domestic, meaning that they were over the age of 15 and did something, but not a specific job like farmer or blacksmith, etc. That would account for all of the cases I've found so far. Still, in the case of the male who was listed domestic but was the only one in the family with a value of real estate owned, it does seem odd as one would led to believe he was the one that owned the farm they were living on. Maybe he owned it but was letting his brother do the work?lol Thanks all for your input - Original Message - From: RICHARD SCHULTHIES [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: LegacyUserGroup@legacyfamilytree.com Sent: Saturday, March 10, 2007 1:03 AM Subject: RE: [LegacyUG] quick genealogy question I would also look around the neighboring pages for how many other domestics are listed, and if differentiated by types. Re: [LegacyUG] feeling really stupid-requesting offlist help
Elizabeth, I feel just like you do. I've brought a big datatbase into Legacy from another program and while it appeared to come over without too many glitches, I'm now finding strange couplings of sources and people who have absolutely no reason to have had that source coupled with them. Also, trying to figure out how to insert sources and events and all their associated windows have about driven me to the wall. The book has definintely NOT been of use but I did find the first set of CDs (borrowed from a friend) cleared up some of the problems with how to insert information into Sources and Events. I finally managed to get one Census looking the way that I wanted it and made my own cheat sheet so that I could redo all of the Census information the same way now and in the future. I'm still playing with the way I've entered them. Tonight I'd like to see what happens if I enter only the words US Federal Census for the Master Source List Name, then define which one it is in some other window, wondering if that would cut down on the number of entries in the Master Source List without causing problems elsewhere. Is there anyone out there who has tried this? What were the results? - Original Message - From: ewintr [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: LegacyUserGroup@legacyfamilytree.com Sent: Thursday, February 15, 2007 2:39 PM Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] feeling really stupid-requesting offlist help Thank you, that would be great. I just don't know what I am doing incorrectly, although I'm sure it must be something that I'm not understanding properly. My goal is to create an online dowloadable/printable 'book' for my family, but I am also having a very difficult time figuring out exactly where to enter information so that things show up where I want them. I sure wish there were lots of examples and SPECIFIC instructions somewhere for Legacy. I can follow directions if none of them are omitted. [LegacyUG] problems with searching in the Index Views
In the INDEX view, my first search column is USER ID while the first file column is headed RIN. I have a party with the # 14851 (don't know whether this is a User ID or RIN number for him). When I put this number in the search field (User ID), I can't find him although I seem to be able to find everyone else I try it with using their number. Re: [LegacyUG] problems with searching in the Index Views
Tried going to Options, Customize, View to see what was checked. Under Display RINS on names I have checks in On all Name Lists and On Family View and Pedigree View. Under Numbers to Add to Names I have RIN turned on. I have looked at this name under the various views and the RIN is always 1344. I can find him on the Index by sorting on the RIN. I can NOT access him by putting his number in the User ID box; I can find everyone else I have tried by putting their RIN number in the User ID box. I ran both File Maintenance options and that did't help. I shut down the program and brought it up again and that didn't help. I'm stumped as to a fix. I CAN always do a workaround by just using his name for the sort but just seems strange that just his doesn't seem to work when reying to locate him using User ID. - Original Message - From: Cathy [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: LegacyUserGroup@legacyfamilytree.com Sent: Thursday, February 15, 2007 6:17 PM Subject: Re: [LegacyUG] problems with searching in the Index Views Hi Pat, You can customise the columns in Index view so I suggest you add User ID. [LegacyUG] Fixing Imported Sources
I just imported a GEDCOM of my family tree from FTM. My sources look very different from how Legacy loads them. I'd like to clean them all and have them entered as Legacy does it (per the instructional CDs) and eliminate the FTM entries. [LegacyUG] Automatic sentences for events in reports
I see that the Deluxe Edition, which I have, automatically forms the events into sentences when printed. How about if I don't want to use them in sentences, is there a way to shut off that option? I had hoped the 'sentence override' would do it, but it doesn't. I really hate to just delete all the options under sentence override. Any suggestions? [LegacyUG] italics or other formatting in names and the data that goes with them
Hi all, Some time ago I imported a gedcom in which some of the names and their data were in italics while others were in bold. While I'm cleaning up all the data after transferring the database from FTM to Legacy, I'd like to get rid of all of the formatting I do not want. How do I go about it and is there a way to clean it up globally? I've tried individually deleting the name and unwanted data formatting then reentering it in normal text but that didn't work.
