NPNY: Planet Earth

2007-07-25 Thread april snow
Well I dont think its the greatest album & I do think lyrically its pretty
damn cheesy...but 4 the time being I am really digging Mr. Goodnight
(despite the rap), Chelsea Rogers & Somewhere Here on Earth. The rest will
have to grow on me. I don't always expect perfection from Prince. At least
its something new to listen to.U all ain't never satisfied!! BTW - I
don't think the 3121 perfume smells like an old lady but its a damn weak
scent.

2007-07-26 Thread afroTsiac
I agree with you, April, regarding people never being satisfied, PE not
being the greatest, and the lyrical cheese factor. The rap in "Mr.
Goodnight" makes me chuckle. A lot. A whole lot. Will this album be in my
Prince Top 5 Albums of All Time? No way, Jose. However, I am diggin' the
following:

Planet Earth - (I REALLY like this song)
Guitar - (Poppy and fun)
Somewhere Here on Earth (Perfection)
Chelsea Rodgers (Fun and funky, corny lyrics aside)
Future Baby Mama (But why the title? whyyy??)

He's given a lot of excellent music over an extensive career and I don't
expect perfection every time, either. Every artist hits a creative wall,
roadblock, or whatever, sometimes for years. PE is what it is, take it or
leave it. I won't get all up in arms. I'll save that ire for glitches in
the NPGMC matrix and questionable ticketing practices. ;)

According to Hits Daily Double, it debuted at #3 with 92,000 units sold. #1
was UTV's Now 25; #2 was the Hairspray soundtrack.

Not bad for an album with very little US promotion other than reviews & news
about the UK giveaway.

Re: NPNY: Planet Earth

2007-07-31 Thread Lockhart, Daryle [GSM]
The US promotion for this album was quite a lot, actually. Besides that
little Super Bowl performance this year, There was the Verizon download,
which was supported with TV, print, and radio spots, then Sony took out
consumer and trade ads for the release. "Guitar" was also "Song of the Day"
at Salon.com, and let's not forget, the news about the UK giveaway was that
they gave away 1 million full length CDs. Any artist would kill for this
kind of promotion.

There hasn't been this kind of set up for an album release in the US since
the 80s. 92,000 CDs sold after all of THIS? I agree with Derek (again), I
think Prince's fan base, us, have spoken.

I also want to mention that this album is not available on iTunes. This is
mainly because of Sony's refusal to play ball with Apple, I'm sure, but on
Prince's part, it's frustrating to fans, and silly. Give away 1 million CDs
but don't have the album available to BUY as a download? Less than a month
after the iPhone comes out? There's no elaborate booklet or packaging on the
CD, it's not really a collector's item. For 12 years he's been going on
about the future of music "being able to download files in2 your fam's
computers"--I wonder what happened?

NPNY: Planet Earth and the Perfume

2007-07-17 Thread Andrew Stanger
You can listen to planet earth right now on MSN radio:

http://music.msn.com/music

Also, does anyone want the box set from the 3121 perfume. Comes with two
bottles of perfume and a body creme.
It comes in a nice purple box with a gold "metal" 3121 logo. Was 77 + 5
shipping and handling. I like the box but really don't need the perfume.
Must
live in NY though so we can meet up somewhere.

Just curious by a show of hands if anyone purchased "Planet Earth" today.

I heard they were fly off the shevles and falling swiftly into the cut-out

I will probably purchase it before the end of the week so I can get it at
the lower $9.99 price. Definitely not worth 14.99 to 16.99 to me...

Re: NPNY: Planet Earth...Listen to it.

2007-07-17 Thread NPS
Dayum, D!

I think that's pretty harsh. I wouldn't say it's a masterpiece but I do
think the music on it is a lot more interesting (in terms of bridges, key
changes, solos, and orchestration) than Musicology and 3121, especially on
tracks like "Planet Earth" and "Somewhere Here On Earth"--two of my favorite
tracks on the album. My other favorites are "Future Baby Mama" and "Chelsea
Rodgers"--one a classic and classy slow jam (even if it has a ghetto title)
and the other a great dance track, something Prince hasn't successfully done
in ages.

I do think the lyrics on most of the album are pretty clumsy, heavy handed,
and lack the kind of double entendre, creative word play, and poetry that
Prince mastered early in his craft.

All in all, it meets my 3-song minimum.

Re: NPNY: Planet Earth...Listen to it.

2007-07-17 Thread Lockhart, Daryle [GSM]
Agreed. My review of Planet Earth is: "what IS this?" These are definitely
the rehearsal sessions from Rainbow Children and Musicology. I'm happy to
hear him playing interesting guitar a little more, but I wish he'd play more
guitar on less hokey songs.

Couldn't he have sold Sony that C-Note album or something? Rainbow Children?
Then maybe people would actually HEAR that album? This Sony/Motown stuff is
hard to listen to. I am clearly an indie label Prince fan, I guess, because
this is two of these crappy albums in a ROW. I hope he has some bootleg
something planned.

That being said, I think it would take "Sign O The Times Part 2" to please
some of us fans. We're really hard on him. I know I am. But that's what
happens.

Honestly, I think this entire album probably sounds better live. Think about
it. How many of you were feeling the 3121.com version of "Guitar"? I was
happier with the Planet Earth version personally. Maybe that is a part of his
design (doubtful), but theres a good chance this sounded better when he
performed them live than in studio.

Oh well, now if we could just get a concert that isn't halfway across the
country (or globe for that matter).

I think when you listen to something over and over again, It's not any
better than the first time around. You just warm up to it because you
become accustomed to listening to it.

Imo, a great song is something that moves you on your first listen. If I
have to listen to over and over again and then decide how i feel about it,
then the song isn't doing it's job.

I've listened to it about 3 times already and I'm not feeling it.

It's often hard to digest a new Prince album because you know what he's
capable of and we get these half-baked efforts in 3121 and PE.

I agree, too. It boggles the mind how he keeps shooting himself in the
foot like this. 3121 was wonderful. Musicology was a good album too, both
critically acclaimed. Now, after all these exclusive (read: expensive)
shows and a lot of wonderful press, this album arrives to mediocre reviews
(in the press) at best.

I'll buy it too, maniac that I am. Hopefully one or two of the songs have
the potential to grow on me. Still, sometimes, don't you wonder what this

Well Derek,,, Sadly I must say I agree with you. I heard it and will buy it
when it comes out but probably won't put it back in cd player anytime soon. And
that sucks because I LOVED 3121 and thought I had the "old" Prince back.

I don't know if that's true. If you listen to the radio (which sadly I do
periodically), the same songs are played over and over and over again. Not
ONE of them that I hated did I grow to like. Accustomed to, maybe, but
like, let alone appreciate? No. For example, anything at all by AKON. :)
Even some of Prince's music has never grown into anything I enjoy. Rainbow
Children in its entirety, "Jughead", You Got the Look..to name a few.

But sometimes, a new listen, a new time in your life, a new moodthat
can change everything about how you hear something. Or read something.
There have been books I could NOT get through. But later, for a variety of
reasons, I'm picking it up again and getting into it.

I do think that musically it is much more interesting than Musicology and
3121, in terms of production, arrangements, and composition. But yeah the

roots reggae, you don't invoke the "Lion of Judah" for some trivial shit

Gotta disagree with you Derek, the album actually doesn't suck except
for that annoying "Mr Good Night" song. :) There were two song I really
hated on 3121 and there probably 1 1/2 songs I can do without on PE.

As for the Chaos & Disorder comparison..Chaos & Disorder is actually a
good album IMHO. Of course I prefer my Prince being his own eclectic
self rather than Prince trying to imitate the crappy popular music
that's "hip" with the kids today.

Prince DOES need to forget about what might be popular with the rest of
the world and get back to doing HIS music though. Sit down with Wendy &
Lisa (or alone since we know he can do it) and produce a quirky Prince
album. And NO I don't mean another Purple Rain. I'm thinking more
"Lovesexy" or "Come".

I've always said that listening to a new Prince album for the first time is
like an adventure. You're never sure exactly what you're in for, and Planet
Earth is no exception. Unfortunately this is one adventure that isn't worth
the trip. It has it's moments, but it also has more than its share of duds
which weighs it down.

Sometimes I really have to wonder what's going through Prince's head.
Between the whole British newspaper thing and the album itself, it's as if
he's trying to deliberately jeopardize distribution deals. What major label
will want to distribute future releases?

Sure, I'll by the CD when it's released and maybe I'll hear something
different then, but for now I'm really disappointed.

P.S. What's all this nonsense lately about Prince and Beyonce?

I felt the same way about Parade. In fact it took me about 10 years before
I could appreciate Parade. At the time of its release, I was looking for
something else (more along the lines of Kiss--a very misleading single in
terms of representativeness of the album) and was disappointed by Parade.
Only years later have I come to appreciate that album in all its
intricacies.

Not saying Planet Earth is a Parade. But it IS interesting. There are
enough standout tracks for me, and the rest, I'll give them a spin every now
and then. I'll give it a chance to see if it's a grower.

Regardless of what musical style made the term iconic in music; we know
Prince is just using religious imagery in the same way he's done
countless time. I mean how is this any different than the song "7";
which is full of religious imagery. As for it being used for something
trivial; I don't know. I read the lyrics someone transcribed and while
I'm not exactly sure what he's singing about exactly; doesn't sound
trivial :)

It just seems maybe instead being innovative, its more routine. Used to
be a time where most of the songs on an album were good to great and
then he would have B side that would be killer, now its maybe two songs
and the rest are fillers.

Regardless of what musical style made the term iconic in music; we know
Prince is just using religious imagery in the same way he's done
countless time. I mean how is this any different than the song "7";
which is full of religious imagery. As for it being used for something
trivial; I don't know. I read the lyrics someone transcribed and while
I'm not exactly sure what he's singing about exactly; doesn't sound
trivial :)

Agreed. My review of Planet Earth is: "what IS this?" These are
definitely the rehearsal sessions from Rainbow Children and Musicology.
I'm happy to hear him playing interesting guitar a little more, but I
wish he'd play more guitar on less hokey songs.

Couldn't he have sold Sony that C-Note album or something? Rainbow
Children?
Then maybe people would actually HEAR that album? This Sony/Motown stuff
is hard to listen to. I am clearly an indie label Prince fan, I guess,
because this is two of these crappy albums in a ROW. I hope he has some
bootleg something planned.

That being said, I think it would take "Sign O The Times Part 2" to
please some of us fans. We're really hard on him. I know I am. But
that's what happens.

I agree, too. It boggles the mind how he keeps shooting himself in the
foot like this. 3121 was wonderful. Musicology was a good album too,
both critically acclaimed. Now, after all these exclusive (read:
expensive) shows and a lot of wonderful press, this album arrives to
mediocre reviews (in the press) at best.

I'll buy it too, maniac that I am. Hopefully one or two of the songs
have the potential to grow on me. Still, sometimes, don't you wonder
what this pretty little man is thinking?

I can't imagine the liner notes of this record being anything I can't live
without. When iTunes gets it, I'll get it.

No matter how many people buy it this week, he's got a million units
floating around England anyway, so it doesn't really matter this time, does
it? He's gonna tell us it's platinum, and justify charging us 321 dollars
for a general admission ticket to a show where he'll do all the songs he
said he wasn't going to do anymore.

I think the Kered disorder is catching. I just don't care this time. I WAS
really excited, then I heard the songs. I'm gonna sit this one out until
the Chelsea Rodgers show starts. Prince has become the David Beckham of R&B.
Over-exposed and under delivering. We shall SEE if he's still got it like he
did back in the day. What they BOTH need is some competition.

I agree... I consider Planet Earth, Somewhere Here on Earth, Future Baby
Mama, and Chelsea Rodgers among the best that he's done in the last decade.
The One You Wanna C is still growing on me and the other stuff I still have
to listen to more closely. As I have said before, to me musically it's a
much more engaging record than Musicology or 3121--a lot more interesting
musical ideas going on... it's going to be a slow grower that stays with me
for a while.

I DO have to admit, I liked "Everlasting Now". Lyrics were rubbish, but the
music really knocked me out. And everyone knows, "Rainbow Children" was not
a popular album. So I feel for you who say "Planet Earth ain't that bad".

But I stand by my review. There's nobody challenging Prince musically,
nobody telling him "that's horrible, P, come again", so he's phoning these
albums in. Although...maybe that's why he has a new band.

Well, I also bought it. I must say I do like it more than when I first heard
it online through MSN. Listening through proper audio equipment helps. It
still doesn't jump out at me though. And not including a booklet is one
thing but he could have at least included a track listing.

I believe Prince did phone this album in. the creativity and lyrics are
mediocre at best. Even Song of the Heart from the Happy Feet soundtrack
sounds like he got it from Wayne Brady making it up on Who's Line Is It
Anyway. D&P was an ok album if cut down to 8 tracks and banning all rap
from it. lol

For those of us who were alive when Prince started, we're all around the age
where this division of opinion is a good thing.

It's just like how there are still people who go to every Rolling Stones and
KISS show, knowing that the best days of those bands have long since passed.
They're going to relive the good old days. The difference with Prince, I
think, is that we all KNOW that he can do better, and there's the question
of all this genius unreleased stuff he has just sitting around. Do any of
you who say you like this album believe he can't do any better? This is a
dude who sold hundreds of thousands of copies of "Lovesexy", a one track
album. I think "Lovesexy" has more musical depth than Planet Earth, and if
the only reason why is because "he's older now", then perhaps he's done. I
personally hope not, because there isn't exactly any one else out here
challenging the musical (and corporate) status quo like him.

On the average, it looks like everyone has 3 or 4 songs that they like from
this album. Compared to entire ALBUMS we've liked from him in the past. I
think that says something about an artist of Prince's caliber. And what I
think it says is that he's trying to make hits, which is a bad move.

You mean baby knows? I like both of those songs but again my opinion.

We all have music styles we like. And styles of Prince music we like.
I really haven't liked his ballads on the last few albums - I want another
adore, insatiable, do me baby. I don't think Call My Name, Satisfied, Future
Baby Mamma really live up to it.

My favorite song of the last few albums is Black Sweat which some of you
probably hate - but I love the falsetto, straight funk groove Prince.

I don't think he is trying to make hits, we have been conditioned by the
industry to think that older artist with new music are trying to make
hits. True in some cases but not for Prince. It only takes 2 brain cells
to have a hit (example: this is why I'm hot, beautiful girls/suicidal) I
think that Prince is missing a muse, someone or something to inspire him
or spark him creatively. But we all know he has it in him to do better,
or even dust off some of the jams out of his vault that haven't been
released or bootlegged. Shoot, even do a whole cover album, I love to
hear his interpretations of EWF's I Write A Song For You or Stevies

See, I thought he was on to something with Black Sweat. When I heard it, I
thought "ahh Prince is back on track!" then the rest of the album left me
completely confused.

I think if "Planet Earth" was D'Angelo's comeback album, for example, people
would line up in the streets and throw stones at him. If any other artist
tried "Future Baby Mama" we'd be talking about how R&B is dead. But because
it's Prince, we're letting it go.

I like when Prince plays hard. Extended versions. Solos. Funk. But I also
like when he has something to say. Even when he was preaching to us, he had
more moments than 3 out of 10.

You know, this is a brilliant point. A Muse. A LOT of artists we love need
new muses. It's like when Stevie Wonder had Syreeta around, his work was
incredible! Nowadays, we get "What The Fuss".

I wonder, though, is Prince's best muse himself or us? His live shows are
hands down great, and that's been pretty consistent for 30 years. It's the
RECORDED work that seems to vary in quality. Maybe he needs to record all
of his future albums live?

Some great points have been made. Prince's music today is certainly
not the quality it was in the past, and he surely can use some creative
inspiration. The recent stuff is average. I still love him for his
outrageousness, and believe he'll find "the muse" he needs. Let's just
consider this era of his music a bit of down time for his Royal Badness.
His live appearances and performances still kick & have stood the test of
time. Peace.

I have to say that I wish Prince would have just wrote songs about what was
bothering him and spared us all the Graffiti Bridge era. "Elephants And
Flowers" is really just a step below "Future Baby Mama".

Seriously, I don't think anyone wants Prince to get all Mary J. Blige on us
and tell us all his business. We just want some advancement in the recorded
music. The concert prices are going up, but the experience we're getting for
the price remains consistent. Not so for the records.

Re: NPNY: Planet Earth Anyone Buy It?

2007-07-26 Thread Amil Dave

I really like the album. I'm on the side of it being one of Prince's
best in years. Better than 3121 and Musicology. In fact, I think it
will outsell 3121 and Musicology. One reason is that I think people
who haven't bought Prince albums in a long time, but know him from
the 80's and early 90's, will hear songs like "Future Baby Mama" and
want to buy it. I pretty much like it all and think this is a great
album. In my mind, the only recent album that trumps this is "Rainbow
Children".

And when you go back to that tour ("One Night Alone" 2001), it was
the last time he was really supporting an album by playing a large
share of the songs from it live. From 3121, for example, he's really
only doing 3 songs or something. I'm betting that if and when we see
Prince tour here next, he'll be playing at least half of this album
live - and it will kick ass. "Get On The Boat" didn't really hit me
until I saw him do it live - then it killed me. But with Planet
Earth, a song like "Chelsea Rodgers" is already doing it on record.

The packaging is very simple - no liner notes, just a few credits on
the back. No tracklisting. No "Prince". Not even the name of the
album on the spine. And what the hell is he wearing in those
pictures? - that black and red thing?? lol

Here's a very positive review of it from Entertainment Weekly. (Sorry
if it's already been posted.):
