Re: Film Day 3

2013-02-23 Thread knarftheria...@gmail.com
I take my Leica CL (1973) out several times a year just to exercise it. The
Yashica Mat EL (1958) sees action about once a year. Sadly, it's been almost
three years since my Spotmatics have seen the light of day - haven't unpacked
them since I moved three years ago. Must find them and take them out for a
walk...

Old cameras are so much fun! Quite liberating, actually. Digital becomes
oppressive after a while. The simplicity of a mechanical film camera is
refreshing.

frank

Thanks Frank. Had a good time shooting film. And I gave the old Leica a bit of
exercise. I have an equally old Agfa folder that is also in need of a workout.

Damn, I attended a free studio workshop today, we had a three flash
setup with two models and I had set the k5 to manual according to the
flash setup. I had the grip on and hit the green button instead of the
AF button which by default reset my settings to the accommodate the
ambient light conditions. As there were a lot of people there it was
fast paced (about 2-3 mins shooting time) I missed the change until it
was too late so a lot of shots are quite blown out. Suffice to say
I've now disabled the green button in manual mode which until this
particular session had never been a real issue.

Cargo bikes are amazing!

Brad is a "lone wolf", one of the few in Toronto. Has a manageable list of
clients who require large boxes to be delivered on a regular basis. Because he
can charge so much more for delivering big boxes he does okay with fewer
deliveries (but obviously works harder for each delivery).

He zips along pretty well on his big old cargo bike:

Cranbrook Manor, an Albert Kahn creation, built in 1908.

Again, the Leica iiif RD and Summicron 2.0. This lens is not as contrasty as
contemporary glass, and the colors are not as saturated. While I adjust the
levels, I resist plussing the midrange contrast extensively or increasing
saturation. It's a fifties film look.

Thanks to all for the kind wishes.

Went back to the fracture clinic yesterday to have it looked at by the
orthopaedic surgeon. Ankle was dislocated in addition to the break. He
therefore had to reduce it (major ouch!) and I am now in a non-walking cast and
we'll wait two weeks, take more xrays and if the reduction sticks I get a
walking cast for a month. If the reduction didn't work we're under the knife.

Fingers crossed!

Today my pusher got the 560mm in house. Since I had the time, I popped by
for a drool'n'fondle. First impressions are that it's mechanically well
built and quite reasonable to handle considering the focal length. It is a
lot lighter than the FA*600/4, but a bit heavier than the Sigma 500/4.5. I
took a picture of the two together with my crappy cellphone, which Stig
Vidar has put online before I even got back to my computer...:-)

GESO - Icycle 2013, Part III

2013-02-21 Thread knarftheria...@gmail.com
Okay. I lied. I found a few more photos that I decided to put on the blog,
mostly to share with those who were at the ice race:

http://knarfdummyblog.blogspot.ca/2013/02/icycle-2013-part-iii-last-i-think.html?m=1

For those of you who didn't see the first two galleries and might be
interested, here they are:

 http://knarfdummyblog.blogspot.ca/2013/02/icycle-2013-pt-1.html?m=1

 http://knarfdummyblog.blogspot.ca/2013/02/icycle-2013-pt-ii.html?m=1

Hope you enjoy the fun and mayhem (yes, they are racing bicycles on ~ice~ with
home made screw studded tires!). Don't expect many comments as these photos are
similar to the first two GESOs but feel free if you have the urge.

;-)

Cheers,
frank

OT - Frequent Fracture Card

2013-02-20 Thread knarftheria...@gmail.com
That's what they're giving me at St. Joe's Hospital here in Toronto. Third
visit in two years, second since September.

We had a flash freeze yesterday after a thaw that covered the gutters and bike
lanes with standing water. The sudden drop in temps, of course, turned it to
ice. Worse was the gusting forty-to-sixty kilometre an hour winds. Got smacked
with a sudden sidewind while on black ice. Down I go.

Broken ankle. But, "a good break" which should allow a walking cast/boot and
heal without complications.

On my way to fracture clinic as we speak to be looked at by orthopaedic surgeon
and get fitted for aforementioned cast.

If I am a walking/metropassing messenger for a while I will have more photo
ops! ;-)

As always, could have been worse.

More on this later. Just wanted to share with friends (that's you guys!). ;-)

cheers,
frank

Re: Kid pictures (was Re: PESO: Concentration)

2013-02-19 Thread knarftheria...@gmail.com
If parents don't want their kids photographed in public places they could dress
them in little burkas.

They could make "Western burkas": like Spiderman or Star Wars for boys, Barbie
or My Little Pony for the girls.

One could do a Christian motif: cover it in crucifixes or maybe a beard and
crown of thorns. Different religions could use their own symbology. Cover up
your child and indoctrinate all at once!

And think of the sports team licensing opportunities here!

Your kid will look cool ~and~ be protected from photographers and other pesky
predators.

With the right marketing this could take off...

I don't photograph kids until I have a signed contract and the parents
pay me a lot of money.

But if I am in a public location, going about my own business, it is
parents responsibility to keep their kids out of my way. It is *not*
their right to tell me I can't engage in my lawful occupation because
they cannot or will not control their spawn.

I've had problems before where I was working, somebody's kid intruded
into my frame & the parents hassled me about it.

I really don't like that.

GESO - Icycle 2013, Pt. II

2013-02-18 Thread knarftheria...@gmail.com
Last installment here (I think) of this weekend's ice race:

 http://knarfdummyblog.blogspot.ca/2013/02/icycle-2013-pt-ii.html?m=1

Top photo is Alberto the Ice Emperor at the starting line. As you can see, the
racers were having lots of fun.

The fellow in the red sweater is Derek the race organizer.

That's Shawn in the black helmet. One of my faves of the weekend it was taken a
few minutes before the first heat and he's definitely got his "race face" on.
He won the last few years and did it again this year. You can see him in the
last photo, in the lead looking back to see where the competition is.

Hope you enjoy. Comments always welcome.

Make the shutter speed any faster & you then run the risk of being
outside of the cameras sync. speed.

All the comments are interesting & all seem to assume that I was
specifically shooting a hair toss, when in actual fact it was the
result of alcohol induced shenanigans.

GESO - Icycle 2013, Pt. 1

2013-02-17 Thread knarftheria...@gmail.com
Yesterday was Icycle 2013, Toronto's annual ice race. Many of the participants
are messengers or ex-messengers but anyone who pays the $15 entry fee can race.

The money (along with proceeds from beer sales at the afterparty) went to a
cyclist who was seriously injured as an innocent bystander (byrider?) when a
car involved in a high speed police chase crashed and pinned her against a lamp
post. About $1,000 was raised.

Anyway, the race is a fun thing as you can see by some of the outfits. The top
photo is Alberto "the Ice Emperor" de Cicco, four-time champ. Leaning into the
corner with the bushy beard is Jim "the Ice Bear" Kuz, another past winner.

The close up of the lovely young lady wearing the helmet is Linda who ended up
winning the women's race this year.

As you can see there was heavy snow during the early heats which made things
look rather seasonal:

Hope you enjoy. Comments welcome.

Thanks, Frank. I appreciate your comments.

Actually, I was using .7 compensation, but it wasn't enough. Had I
used more, however,I probably would have blown out the background
completely. She was in the open shade, and the bright tropical
sunshine in the background at midday was almost blinding. But, hey,
that is one of the things one must suffer here in paradise. When I
have more time, I try to improve the image in PS. Too much to do here
right now, with the whales cavorting off shore and the consistently
great weather i the rain shadow of a 10,000 foot volcano.

By the way, here is South Maui I am surrounded by Canadians, Mostly
from BC and Alberta, but also from Manitoba, Saskatchewan, the Yukon
and even New Brunswick. Air Canada, Alaskan and Hawaiian airlines all
have reasonable direct flight from the major cities of Western Canada,
the Canadian (particularly in the Western Provinces) economy appears
stronger now that that of the US, and of course the weather in Western
Canada is a bit chilly that time of year. As a result, in the area
where we stay, Canadians far outnumber those from the US.

RE: PESO x 2 - Morgan

2013-02-17 Thread knarftheria...@gmail.com
I really like Severance! Intense and moody (in a good way).

Morgan shows lots of personality and warm energy but I find that his his body
dominates his head just a bit. Maybe it's distortion thing caused by the low
angle but I think I might like this a bit more if there were either a bit of
room over his head or if hospital body were cropped a bit.

Still, a very nice photo with that wonderful smile!

Two portraits of local independent filmmaker Morgan Muscat as part of
my wife's interview series.

Morgan

Severance
http://www.flickr.com/bruce_m_walker/8474616310/lightbox

The first was taken during a taped interview; room lighting augmented
by an LED panel camera-right. (Turns out that these older-gen LED
panels have a green spike in their spectrum that is impossible to
fully remove in Lightroom. I need to get a minus 1/2 green gel filter
for it.)

The second is by way of editorial to illustrate the article. It's 99%
"real" but I was ended up creating a composite of two shots where the
projected movie title was in focus in one and Morgan was in focus in
the other. Morgan is simply lit with a halogen reading lamp.

K20D, DA* 16-50/2.8 SDM.

Enjoy!

PESO - Snow Day (messenger content)

2013-02-12 Thread knarftheria...@gmail.com
Another photo from last Friday's storm. Three o'clock on a Friday afternoon at
a major downtown intersection and almost no cars. Usually Yonge and Queen would
have a bit more traffic. Lots of people stayed home and lots of businesses
closed early.

There were a few messengers still out, though:

 http://mondociclismo.blogspot.ca/2013/02/snow-day.html?m=1

With the bright background I set the exposure compensation for +1.7 EV and that
gave good results, I think.

Hope you enjoy. Comments always welcome.

Hi all,

The past few days have provided a nice break in the usual action
around here. I took the camera out yesterday, along with my shovel,
thinking I'd get a few neighborhood scenes... Well, it was harder than
I thought it would be, just getting out of my own yard... though I did
consider strapping some tennis rackets to my boots as snowshoes...

Anyway, a few shots here:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/23028562@N04/sets/72157632736739251/with/8464137448/

Now for my question...
I learned long ago that it's a good idea, after being out in the cold
with your camera, to bag it up in a ziploc & then let it come to room
temp for a couple of hours before using/retrieving sd card, etc. All
in the name of preventing condensation/moisture from getting into the
camera & messing with the electronics, etc.. Here's what I wonder:
1) How many of you do this?
2) For a weatherproof camera, like the k-5, is this "less necessary"?
Especially when combined with a WR lens...?

Thanks for your thoughts...
:)

Thanks Don, and everyone else who commented.

It wasn't really that cold but Jason hates cold so wears the neoprene mask.

Christine, a lot of messengers wear shorts over their winter tights. An extra
layer of warmth but more than that they are cheaper to replace than tights.

Going down on a snowy day won't rip anything but on bare dry pavement spandex
doesn't stand a chance. The shorts are for protection. Also for some reason
most messengers don't like spandex so will cover it up when possible.

Ken, those fat tire bikes are cool! They would be great in snow, that's for
sure.

Thanks to all who looked and commented.

So, my latest favorite subject returned tonight for a visit. I asked her
about whether or not she'd be interested in posing for me -- perhaps in
some motorcycle (ahem, Larry!) shots. Let's just say, after discussing
the last photo I took of her, she's amenable; I daresay enthusiastic.

I couldn't let her get away without taking another shot tonight.
Unfortunately, the light was crappy, so I used flash. Here are the results:

http://www.flickriver.com/photos/walt_gilbert/8463612961/
K-5, FA 50/1.4, 1/100 sec, ISO 3200

I didn't think to pull back the ISO before the shot, but it turned out
remarkably well in spite of my oversight, I think.

I think I'm really going to enjoy working with this girl (and the K-5).

Re: PESO -- Major Snow Event?

2013-02-10 Thread knarftheria...@gmail.com
Blizzards are characterized by high winds. Traditionally sustained winds of 50
km/h (30 mph) were required along with heavy snow.

Now the measure is visibility - a combination of winds and snow that limits
visibility to 400 metres or yards is a blizzard.

I guess my problem with the whole "snow event " nomenclature is that we had a
perfectly useful and universally understood name for what eastern North America
just experienced: a "winter storm". "Snow event " seems like more of the
CNN-ization of our culture.

Silly, but I'm not going to lose a lot of sleep over it.

meet the definition of a blizzard, yet "snow fall" falls short.

RE: Why would you buy a Pentax FF camera?

2013-02-10 Thread knarftheria...@gmail.com
I suppose I don't count because I am not a gear head. Other than the low ISO I
am so happy with my K10d...

But there is one reason I would want full frame: wide angle would be wide
again. My Zenitar semi-fisheye would be a "real" 16mm lens again.

That would be cool...

Cheers,
frank

--- Original Message ---

From: Steve Cottrell
Sent: February 7, 2013 2/7/13
To: pentax list
Subject: Why would you buy a Pentax FF camera?

I mean, aside from the obvious reasons like, bigger sensor, better image
quality, better use with lenses designed to work with a 36X24mm frame,
better lighting, better heating, better sewer systems, the roads (yes we
can't forget the roads)

Back in 2000, this camera came onto the scene:

and at the time, I was toting both the LX and the MX along with various
lenses and stuff. It was the first really 'affordable' DSLR and had I
not prevaricated for many months, I would have had one there and then.
Instead I waited to see what might be coming from Pentax - and so I
waited and waited. And nothing came.

And so in 2002, this came out:

and I could wait no longer. I jumped.

It was made of creaky plastic and it felt not a patch on the quality
metal construction of the MX and LX, but shooting with it was amazing.
No film! It was about £2000 GBP at the time and the premium paid over
and above a comparative film camera would have kept me in FP4 for years.
But it was digital and it was instant - I had a grin that lasted weeks.

I had the D60 for a while, but longed for better build quality and
features - exactly what I found in the 1D mark II (aps-h...1.3X crop).
That was a camera that fully met (and exceeded) all expectations. If I'd
stayed in the game of carrying a big system about with me, i would have
without doubt moved onto a 1Ds (full frame).

As it is, I sold up when times were hard, and in fact didn't really miss
it all.

My son has a 1DmIIn and some lenses, and good luck to him. Nice to play
with for a while, and I still mount a Pentax lens on it now and again if
I need to do some portraits, but I'm happier with my lil Fuji.

So what if Pentax brings out a FF camera - would I jump? i might...but why??

Well, the answer will probably surprise you and some will ridicule. It
has to do with a certain lens...

I still have my A*85/1.4 and I long for the time I can mount it to a
proper 36X24 Pentax body - simple as that. I'd be more than happy with
just that lens attached the whole time - and just for portraits. Daft innit!

But there you go - that's the way it is. So much for the photographic
tools theory. I keep a lens that waits for the right body to come along.
Who'da thought it.

that's very nice - the bird makes it outstanding - you could probably make

PESO - Prepared for Battle (messenger content)

2013-02-10 Thread knarftheria...@gmail.com
I didn't get nearly as many photos on Friday as I had hoped because (a) I was
working and spent much of my time underground on the subway, and, (b) there
were far fewer messengers on the road. Many clients were closed or closed early
so the messengers spent a lot of "standing by".

This is the only "environmental portrait" I got. Jason's attire reminded me of
armour, hence the title:

Subject: GESO - Snow Crystals Snaps (extreme macro)

We've had pretty steady lake effect snow this week and last night for a
few hours I was able to catch it while it was producing well formed
single crystals. I stated out playing with the Q but when I saw that
there were some good subjects I switched over to the tried and true K-5
setup.

You can see the keepers here:

http://www.markcassino.com/b2evolution/

Permalink:

http://www.markcassino.com/b2evolution/index.php/2013-snow-crystals

The setup was the K-5, ~200mm of tubes and extension (varies between
shots) and a reverse mounted Sigma 50mm EX macro. Lit with an AF360FGZ
in manual mode at 1/32 power. Exposure controlled via ISO on the camera
- these are mostly at ISO 100 with a couple at 80 and one at 200.

Thanks for looking!

Mark

PS: Regarding the Q... I found that the flash *can* be set to manual
mode provided that you set it to manual before mounting it on the
camera. Once mounted only P-TTL and SB are available. But if you turn on
the flash and set it to manual it will stay in manual until the flash is
powered off or the setting is changed.

You can blame Frank for this project. :-)

http://www.behance.net/gallery/Mannequins-when-theyre-at-home/6868595
or
http://goo.gl/P7nzw if the long one broke.

Back in September Frank posted a PESO of some broken mannequins at a
store in his neighborhood. I asked him the address as I'd been looking
for an inexpensive mannequin to use for lighting tests. Sure enough,
the store, "Then Again Vintage", had a small number of mannequins left
over from a sale, and I bought one. The clerk mentioned that they had
way more stuff at the main warehouse.

That turned out to be a significant understatement! As you'll see when
you look at the gallery.

All shots: K20D, DA* 16-50/2.8 SDM, Tav, 1/60th, ISO ranges 200 - 3200.
Lightroom 4.3, Photoshop CS5.
All ambient light, handheld.

* I hate to need to mention this, but better safe than sorry. Many
images depict flesh coloured, undraped female mannequin torsos. If
displaying plastic boobies on your screen might be a concern, don't
scroll down from the initial image. Yes, the 1st image is 100% safe. *

Comments welcome, of course.

Whatever connoisseurs might say, the large portion of people do enjoy
bright, saturated colors.

Every so often, PDMLers criticize examples of somebody's oversaturated
photos. But there must a be a reason why those things "sell".
I just looked over the first few pages of the most popular photos on
500px.com:
http://500px.com/popular
Almost all of them (if not all) have saturated colors (or high-contrast
B&W)

I am sure psychologists wrote papers and books on this topic, I didn't
even try to google it, but I suspect the reason is simple: bright colors
are easier for "consumption", the same way as sweet foods/drinks
attract attention of adults and especially kids. In a similar way,
many people start drinking wines by liking the sweet ones.

Just dropping in to say thanks for all of the good wishes, both on
list and personally, following my recent stroke. It wasn't the way I
had planned to see in the New Year - I've still got a bottle or two of
champers to crack when I get the OK from my doctors.

I'm home again after 3 weeks in hospital. I don't know if the quality
of daytime TV is the same everywhere but in Sydney it was a choice of
endless tennis or re-runs of 1970/80/90 TV dramas and sitcoms. I
can't stand televised tennis so I chose the re-runs, but I think I'm
now MacGyvered out.

I'm now walking OK, but my style and speed wont win any prizes for
some time. The left arm is improving but keyboard operations are still
a bit of a problem so i won't be posting regularly for a while. I
expect to be having more therapy as an outpatient for 4-6 weeks.

A special thanks to Bill Robb and Igor for taking care of the PUG at
short notice. Bill, I hope you can continue for another month until I
see how my gallery compilation skills re-develop.

My biggest complaint is that i haven't taken a single photo in 2013!
The K-5 is still a bit beyond me but the Q should be useable - I'm
about to order the 5-15mm zoom for it.

Anyway, it's good to be back on the list and dealing with the daily
flood of mail!

My newest cast iron horse drawn fire wagon is here. It was as is
condition, one of the horses and the wagon were in two pieces each. A
quick google search for cast iron and super glue resulted in a super
glue repair. The smaller set is the newest, the bigger one i bought
Jan 2010. The new set had the two firemen i was missing from the
bigger one, so i put them, on the bigger one. I still need to find the
two hooks and ladders for the bigger one, then its a complete set.

I think i'll keep trying to find stuff like this.

I'm tempted to call this "Survivor" instead. I've had quite a hard day but
this finishers shirt was good payment :)

More details to come in a couple of days when I get back home.

Had some time this afternoon, so I rendered the Corvette pics on my calibrated
monitor and was able to coax more detail out of the red bloom. The young lady
in the first pic was guarding the front row for the GM prez and his entourage.
Shot her at 12,800 under the red light that was keeping bathing the stage
before the show began. A video is playing on a screen in the background, thus
the burned out corner. The other pics are all shot at ISO 3200, f4.5, with
shutter speeds ranging from 1/40th to 1/125th.

Re: OT - on gear, technique and inspiration

2013-01-20 Thread knarftheria...@gmail.com
I went into it thinking I would dislike it, but surprisingly I didn't.

I didn't hear him say not to look at other photographs, especially great ones.
What I heard was him saying that when he's shooting he's not specifically
thinking about other photos.

Just as he's not thinking about equipment, he's just shooting.

He didn't say that equipment isn't important, just that he doesn't obsess over
it.

I didn't hear him say he's a font of creativity, just that he wants to get his
creative ideas from within.

I thought he made some valid points.

Cheers,
frank

Yes, I tended to agree with Larry. He was very good as speaking in
metaphor (I tend to think that same way, so I appreciated that).

But I guess specifically, what I disliked about his attitude was that
he came across as presenting himself as font of creativity and he
can't contaminate that by looking at what others have done. Well, I
hate to break it to you, but that's how you learn. In fact, if he was
honest, that's how HE learned.

That's why cooking shows are so popular, for example. You see the
ingredients (and equipment) that they use and you get inspired to try
it yourself. Now an experienced cook is going to be able to get as
good (or better) results even if they don't use exactly the same
ingredients or equipment because they know what they are doing. A true
kitchen artist can just be thrown into a room with a set number of
ingredients and create something great. But they are fooling
themselves if they think they got to that point without "standing on
the shoulders" of other who came before them, learning their ways and
copying their recipes.

I think it is similar with learning anything, like portraiture. You
have to learn some basics with regards to flattering lighting for
different facial types, etc. You have to learn how/why setting
shoulders and slight head tilts towards either the lower or higher
shoulder makes one look masculine or rather feminine. You didn't
invent that. You didn't discover that. It just IS. But when you are
starting out you need to learn to see that.

In time, I think we tend to start taking what we have learned and
thinking that we always knew it (or worse, that we originated it) when
we did no such thing. This guy is just "further down the tunnel" than
most and so now he wants to establish that fact with his audience and
belittle the approach of learning from tear sheets? Please.

His basic point regarding how your success or creativity is not
completely dependent upon a particular piece of equipment? Yeah, I
think most of us already know that. But that doesn't mean that we
don't still accumulate equipment for whatever reason - if only out of
curiousity/experience with something we haven't worked with before.
