Once that load menu is open its all accessible! :)

Re: elastic audio

2014-01-19 Thread CHUCK REICHEL
Hi chad,

Heres a excerpt from my post last year.
 Elastic audio is usable! :)
Long explanation Read the PT manual! ;)
 Short story!
Import a drum loop in to PT.
Click on the Elastic Audio Plug-in selector button in the edit window.
Select ✓ Rhythmic from the list, because it's a Drum loop.
Next click on the Timebase selector and choose (ticks) allowing the audio to
dynamically change along with the tempo as if it were midi.
 OK thats it! :)
 Now the fun!!!
Go to Regions menu and select Conform to Tempo and bang the drum loop is
now playing back in time with your pt session tempo!
If you want to transpose say a melodic elastic audio loop just go to
transpose window and bang it up or down to taste!
Also quantization of the elastic audio is available if you want.
Just a note I accomplished this using a PT HD3 system running pt 9.3..

 Chuck's USA proverb!
Never Listen to People that say it can't be done LOL
That's it for now have fun.
 GUFFAWING :) :) :)

Re: Editing with a virtual instrument track

2013-12-23 Thread CHUCK REICHEL
Hi John,
You can use your f keys 1 2 3 or 4 to select edit modes.
Also when holding down shift and then hitting your f keys you can select both
grid and slip or shuffle.
This is a fast way to combine edit modes! :)
This is what probably happened to you the other day.
If grid gets stuck in a selected state, use your mouse and command click on it
and select the other grid mode this should clear the selection.
If that don't work try selecting the Zoomer toolthen repeat the other
steps.
This was rather quirky but its all doable!

Re: Editing with a virtual instrument track

2013-12-22 Thread CHUCK REICHEL
Hi guys,
This is not a bug!
I don't have the exact key command but grid is often used in conjunction with
slip or shuffle to save time in editing.
When using tic based tracks like MIDI and instrument tracks, it keeps
things on the grid so to speak! LOL
I'll look for the Key command when I get some time.
If memory serves me right shift is used when using both of the modes together.

Hi Poppa,

Look in your Session File Backups folder in your session folder for that
session you spoke about.
theres probably 20 or 30 saves that were automatically generated just sitting
there.
Heres my method for tracking;;
only have the tracks your recording showing!
This keeps you out of hot water! :)
I also save as and rename every big step of the project like my first session
would be m1 then vocal tracking would be m2 then m3 then m4 and so on.
At any point in the project I could go back to m1 or m2 or m3 of the pt
sessions that I chose Save as and and grab what got misplaced by importing
session data

Hi List,

success yet?
If so How does voiceOver work with it?
I heard a demo of it being used and I am taking a deeper Look at using it. :)
Short snip from the Audio Plug-Ins Guide.pdf.
Audio Plug-Ins Guide.pdf (page 95.
Chapter 18: Time Compression/Expansion
Time Compression/Expansion is a time-process- ing plug-in that comes in
AudioSuite format only.
The Time Compression/Expansion plug-in adjusts the duration of selected

Re: Setting selection points and deselecting tracks

2013-07-08 Thread CHUCK REICHEL
Hi Cara,
For track selection and deselection at least in pt 9.3 on an HD 3 system, with
Snow Leopard while in the mix window, the tracks table must be resized to the
right about 30% for the tracks to behave normally.
Thats why I operate from a template most of the time.
After getting sighted assistance the first time, to resize the tracks table
for the template track selection is consistent from session to session Un till
you get over 45 to 50 tracks then it gets a bit weird!

If you look in the archives you will see the tracks table resizing thing come
up periodically.
As for the showing tracks that are selected this becomes a habit just like
practicing scales! ;)

set amount as well, so things are going well there. :)

 Two concerns are coming up for me;

1 When I select a track, I'd like to make a selection at the start and end
of the session. This should really be easy, but if I select all, I'll be
selecting all tracks, which is not what I want. I want to make the selection
 on one track only.

I know where the edit fields for start and end of a selection are but when I
try to edit them I can only edit the bar and not the beat. I'm using a
standard Macbook Air keyboard and when I click the trackpad on the edit
field to type numeric data into it, only the measure changes. I've tried
routing the mouse to the beat and tick fields but no dice. So this would
seem to me to be an accessibility issue. Yes?

I'm planning on getting a keyboard with a numeric keypad in a couple of days
so perhaps this will take care of this but as I mention above, the fact that
I can actually edit this text but only one part of it seems like an issue
 with accessibility to me. thoughts?…

Is there a way I'm missing which will allow me to select between two
specific times in a single track regardless of what type of keyboard I'm
 using?

 So now on to my next question;

2 I can easily select tracks but how can I deselect them? I've read many,
many different answers on the web as it seems many people have this question
and pretty much none of the answers work here. :) So I'm wondering what
y'all do to deselect tracks which may have gotten selected?

thanks so much and I wish y'all a lovely day!

We did speak about QuicKeys as a work around possibly though.

mike is using sound replacer that PT has and with good results.
I tried SR with a kick replacement the other day and it was tight!
For now I just need some cool samples! :)
It would be nice to have multi level samples being triggered though!

OK, I just had to turn down a client from recording in my studio which I
never like doing. Especially not after they make an evening to come to my
place and record, only then to have to turn all the way and go back home.
Fortunately, they live on this side of town, and yes, I did give them a
complete 100% refund, but this is still humilliating that I didn't have gear
to support them when I thought I did.

Basically, here is the situation. If any of you have any clue for going
forward of anything I could try in the future, let me know as this wound up
 being a disaster.

First of all, it was two really little children. One is in Preschool, and
the other in the first grade. They had some karaoke tracks of little nurcery
rhymes like Old McDonnald, the Farmer and the Dell, Bingo, etc. which they
were given on a CD, and just for fun their parents had given them a surprise
to go to a studio and record them singing on top of the disc, and my studio
wound up being the one they chose here locally. I was thrilled, until they
got here. for one thing, the little girl, cute as a button! as she was, who
was the pre-schooler had some major issues. For one thing, even at its
lowest setting, she couldn't get right up on the mike in the stand. I
practically had the thing where it wasn't raised at all! It was literally as
low as it would go. The little kneck thing you pull up to raise the stand
then tighten the little screw thingy was literally touching the bottom half
of the stem up of the stand. Yet, it was too short. Not by much, but just
enough to be a problem. So, I just handed her the mike, and said here
sweety, just hold the thing. Well, that didn't work really well, as she was
constantly moving the thing around, so it was booming all over the place in
the recording horrendously. The other kid had an issue where I tried about 2
or 3 different styles, but no matter what I did, the earphones would not fit.
They were too big. When I got them small enough to fit his little head, he
complained it was squeezing him too tightly, and was hurting. I tried
loosening the things by one notch, but then they kind a sagged on him. These
are mainly AKG's that I use in the studio. I got a pare of MK2's, and not
totally sure what the other models are. I even let him try a pair of just
little el cheapo walkman style headphones which I put a stereo quarter inch

OK, I just had to turn down a client from recording in my studio which I

Fortunately, they live on this side of town, and yes, I did give them a
complete 100% refund, but this is still humilliating that I didn't have gear
to support them when I thought I did.

Basically, here is the situation. If any of you have any clue for going
forward of anything I could try in the future, let me know as this wound up
 being a disaster.

First of all, it was two really little children. One is in Preschool, and
the other in the first grade. They had some karaoke tracks of little
nurcery rhymes like Old McDonnald, the Farmer and the Dell, Bingo, etc.
which they were given on a CD, and just for fun their parents had given them
a surprise to go to a studio and record them singing on top of the disc, and
my studio wound up being the one they chose here locally. I was thrilled,
until they got here. for one thing, the little girl, cute as a button! as
she was, who was the pre-schooler had some major issues. For one thing,
even at its lowest setting, she couldn't get right up on the mike in the
stand. I practically had the thing where it wasn't raised at all! It was
literally as low as it would go. The little kneck thing you pull up to
raise the stand then tighten the little screw thingy was literally touching
the bottom half of the stem up of the stand. Yet, it was too short. Not by
much, but just enough to be a problem. So, I just handed her the mike, and
said here sweety, just hold the thing. Well, that didn't work really well,
as she was constantly moving the thing around, so it was booming all over
the place in the recording horrendously. The other kid had an issue where I
tried about 2 or 3 different styles, but no matter what I did, the earphones
would not fit. They were too big. When I got them small enough to fit his
little head, he complained it was squeezing him too tightly, and was
hurting. I tried loosening the things by one notch, but then they kind a
sagged on him. These are mainly AKG's that I use in the studio. I got a
pare of MK2's, and not totally sure what the other models are. I even let
him try a pair of just little el cheapo walkman style headphones which I put
a stereo quarter inch adapter on the end of, but it didn't really work very
well. they fit, but he didn't seem to like the way they felt on him. I
couldn't really say to hell with the head phones as that would have
produced a lot of loopback had I used the speakers I have in here. So,

Any of the current Gen mac book pros or mac book pros retina should be fine.
When you Boot Camp, apple provides you with all the windows drivers for the
internal hardware of that speciffic computer so everything will work well
under windows. If you get a current gen mac book pro with 8 or 16gb of ram
it will handle sonar and etc fine. The advantage to a macbook pro over a
mac book retina is you can remove the cd rom drive and put in a second HD f
you want anduse the CD rom drive as an external drive. If you travel alot
this allows you to have two internal drives and not have to worry abut an
external HD. As far as the second drive or external HD you want that one to
be a 7200 rpm drive or higher, not a solid state drive as those aren't made
to handle being constantly written to like they would be when recording. It
can handle it fine but it will shorten the life of solid state drives the
more you constatntly write to them as in a recording session. Solid state
drives are fine for the main boot drives and I highly recommend them for
 that.

I use a macbook in my studio, and though its not anywhere near

On the boot camp side, I rub that too, and it seems to do fine, although I

Simply put you need a firewire 6 pin to firewire 9 PIN cable. The
firewire 9 pin slot is the one just after the 4 USB ports on the back
of the 2011 iMac. Read on for a more detailed explanation. Mac
Proprietary is a bit misleading here. There are three firewire size
plugs and two firewire standards. The original firewire spec also
referred to as Firewire 400 or firewire 1 (or (IEEE 1394 on the PC
side) has a 4 pin and a 6pin plug. 6 pin is the standard firewire plug
for the original spec. The 4 PIN ones are usually found on laptops
and don't have the extra two PIN's for sending power down the cable so
anything using firewire 400 with a 4 PIN connector on one or both
ends will need to have a separate power supply. However when firewire
2 came out also known as firewire 800 Apple was the only one that
really made it standard on all their machines. Firewire 2 or firewire
800 has a 9 pin connector and this is the one found on modern macs
now. The good thing is firewire is completely backwards compatible so
though most audio gear never moved above firewire 400 a simple
firewire 6 pin to 9 pin cable will allow you to connect any audio
interface to any current mac. Personally I prefer www.monoprice.com
for all my cable needs as they have a lifetime warranty and decently
low prices. So Hope this helps let me know if any further
clarification is needed or if any other questions relating to this you
 want answered.

 Hello folks.
I have a little problem here. I'm trying to hook up my M-Audio project mix
to my Pro tools with a Firewire cable, since i figure that's how it's
done. I have a 21 inch Imac from around 2011 and i wonder where to hook up
the Project mix since it looks like the project mix can't communicate with
the Protools i have. I get a warning that it can not communicate with HUI
which i understand is the protocol to be used.
Could anyone please explain to me what i need to do and what cable to use?
I got a cable with the interface, but i don't understand how to hook it
up. It looks like it has a Usb Micro or a mini usb connection in one end
and a firewire connection in the other. It may be, however, that there's a
firewire mini connection, i don't know and if so it doesn't fit anywhere
on the computer and i don't see a mini firewire connection on the Project
 mix itself.
Also are there some setting in the pro tools that should be changed in any
 way and if so, how?
Please help i've gone from confused, (my usual state of mind) to feeling
 utterly bewildered and stupid.

Hi Krister,

These 4 tutorials from Groove 3 Inc. are a must for all new Pro Tools users.
I'v been ordering from there for several years have never been disappointed.
There are several people on this list that can testify to the importance of
these tutorials.
Contact 1-800-460-7509 Groove 3 Inc in the USA State of Texas.

Ask them for Kenny Gioia's pro tools parts 1234 tips tricks
They usually discount them by 50% do to the fact they are videos and some
visuals are missed but WOW you will bypass several years of PT guessing! :)
You can get them from there web site but navigation is a bit difficult!
also but the check out can be difficult thats why I called them up years ago
and established a relationship with them.
When I contacted Kenny Gioia, one of there contributors, and brought it to his

is working on a descriptive audio track to include for future PT tutorials!

As for the retune speed the only way currently is to use a controller fader to

You could save the re-tune for that section as a preset and then call it up

Re: Need help from an expert or two regarding Arturia Cs-80V under Pro tools for Mac v9

2013-02-04 Thread CHUCK REICHEL
Hi,
You should use a controller then using VoiceOver find the parameters you want
to change and mark a hotspot and have VoiceOver monitor the hot spot.
Now grab some faders on the controller and when strike Gold :) voiceover will
announce the parameter being changed.
Make sure to document the faders that work for your plug.

in keyboard in system preferences you need to remap the positions of cmd and
option. What we consider the ALT key on windows is the oPtion key on the
mac keyboard, and what we consider the windows key is the apple or cmd key on
the mac. So on the drop down menu for option, change it to command and the
one for command change it to option and it will work like a standard mac
keyboard. If you don't you will have to use control and ALT for your voice

Put it on the insert before the reverb insert your using and cut some lows down

better than using Numbers spreadsheets and entering a time when I start and
stop and doing all the formulas and stuff. I talked to the developer and he's
going to create a keyboard shortcut to start and stop the clock so we don't
have to go scrolling through all the buttons to do it.

The Home Recording Show is great. They come out with a new one every week
pretty much and it's always informative and educational. I learn so much from
it and they talk about recording in a more general sense, not specifically
Pro Tools or a specific DAW. One of the hosts uses PT and the other one uses
Reaper and they usually have a guest host on to talk about a specific area of
recording. One of the best tools I've gotten for learning more about the
craft of recording. Second only to Sessions with Slau. ; )

Well the DAW is simply the tool used to get the job done. The job is
recording and turning out a great mix. Now that you understand your way
around the tool, i think next you should work on enhancing what you do. Mic
placements and other recording techniques that help you get the sound you
want up front going into the DAW and then how to use the tools provided with
in that DAW to make the sound what you hear in your head. THis i providing
thats what you want to do, and given that you expressed an interest in it, i
Assume you want to do both. I'd suggest start with the recording side, and
once you feell confident about that with your current gear work on the mixing
 side a bit.

OK, I did mark this message with low importance, however it would be
interesting to hear what you all who've been doing this stuff now for a
while, like Kevin, Slau, Venni, etc. would have to say about this. Obviously
every one of you are welcome to answer. Please do. The more advice I get,
the better, but I'm especially! however aiming this mail at you all who have
been in the PT world for at least! a year now if not more.

Let's get a few facts straight up front. I never ever ever ever ever ever
ever!~ meant to, nor am! for that mind, purposefully trying to imply that I
know it all. I don't! Not even! cloce! This is why I'm reaching out to you
 all for suggestions here.

 So here's the thing.

I've not really been serious about PT nor had a copy I could use on a
regular basis until last March when I got my M-Audio Fast Track C400
interface, and the bundled PT MP9.

I honestly can say, the last 4, now going on 5 months have been amazing! I
have learned so much from you all, and Kevin, I have to publicly say about
you... if it wasn't for you, I am very humble at all you have especially
done to help me. Between you helping me with my composition and getting it
on ITunes, to our 3 lessons, with you working with me one on one, etc. I
could not have done this without your help. So, I really feel you publicly
deserve a major! thanks of gratitude. It's people like you, and Slau, etc.
who help me succeed. With this said, I kind a feel now a little stuck.
Here's the thing. I know Protools is extremely powerful, and, believe you
me: I do mean, pow? wer? ful! but I dont' know why, I feel though like I'm
kind of at a point, where I don't know what next to really learn.

I know I have a crap load to learn about audio mixing in general, you know,
more about setting good levels, e queueing, how compression works, how to
tweek certtain things, etc. but as far as more just the operation itself! of
ProTools, speaking more just on the navigation and usage side of it in more
a general since, I don't know where next to really go.

I know how to comp, and how to nudge, I'm gotten quite good at using my num
pad and doing edits, I am quite good at selecting and unselecting
tracks/data, I'm gotten pretty good at reading my meters, and resetting
them, and determining if parts are clipping, I've learned how in general
most plugins are laid out, I mean, yeah, ok, each plugin will have different
settings, fine, I'll grant that to ya, but I meant more in general, I know
they have a librarian menu, the settings button, your bypass, your compare,
etc. etc, then the different parameters themselves.

I've learned how to syncronize tempo in the constant tempo screen under
events. I'll admit I've not yet learned how to set a retard event, or such,
nor how to switch from 4/4 time to say, 3/4 time in the middle of a song, so
that is something I still need to work out, but in general, I can over all
set the time sig, and the tempo. I know how to set my metronome, and change
 the sounds

Re: moving tracks

2012-06-30 Thread CHUCK REICHEL
Hi Kevin,
Unless I'm missing something all you half to do is to do a mouse down on the
track and then navigate to where you want to drop it to in the tracks table and
then do a Mouse UP and bang its moved! :)
As I always say the tracks table must be resized to the right 30% for this to
work.
Also the track must be selected to!
Unfortunately Avid has not fixed the fact that we can't see the move bar for
the tracks table to move.
This has all been covered in many past emails of course!
I have my num pad set up for 1 of the keys to be mouse down and another num pad
key to be mouse up which makes it very easy and rapid!
Kevin why don't your reply emails contain the original text that your
responding to?
Just curious? ;)

Re: Deselecting All

2012-06-23 Thread CHUCK REICHEL
Hi Jon,
The short answer is to resize the tracks table to the right by 30%.
unfortunately Avid has not made the resize bar visible to VoiceOver so you
should get some sighted assistance for this.
Some people have had good results by using the VoiceOver command to resize the
tracks table though! :)
What I do is to make up a pt template with the tracks table large enough for
the normal track selection to be accomplished.
Once this is done everything is just BOB!! ;)
You could also scrub the tracks to get the first 2 of them selected then hide
the rest and deal with those 2 tracks remaining!
There are several other ways that the list could chime in on I'm sure!
If you get stuck give me a call!

 Hi,

It is the new plugin format. Some plugins are still in the old RTAS
 Format

and others are in the new Aax Format. If you want to use only the old
plugins, go to applications / Avid/ pro tools. There, you will find an
alias called AAX plugins. Click this. Then you are in the folder,
 where

the AAx plugins are. Select all and delete them. If you then launch
 pro
tools, you will find the old plugins and nothing else.

If you want to update your pro tools, make sure, that in the
 installation

program the checkbox called Avid Effects or so is unchecked. This is
 the

only workaround, we have at the moment.

If Pro tools 11 is out, we could have a possibility to control plugin
parameters; use a control surface. For IOS devices, an app called pro
remote is available. I wonder, if there isn't verbal feedback from
 the
device. I can't test it, because I don't have an IOS device. But, if
 it
works, there will be another possibility, we have.

 Best wishes

Hi Eric,

Heres the short story!
Make sure your midi track is displaying notes! :)
Tab to get your midi track selection.
Now go to the event menu.
open up event operations.
vo space on change velocity.
Hit tab 1 time to hi light velocity field.
Now punch in the new velocity on the num pad.
Hit enter bang! the midi selection is changed to what you entered on the num
pad! :)
Jason reminded myself the other day that the velocity is also displayed in the
edit window beside the counters also just like pt 5.1! ;)

The problem is, avid moves to a proprietary plug-in format called AA X.
We've all noticed that these AA X plug-ins are now broken. I'm not quite
sure what to do about this, but that is the reason that I'm not
upgrading to 10 yet. Because I had a demo of 10, and noticed that half
of the plug-ins didn't work that were a a x Hence why I'm sticking with

vo+shift+space. Then, I can't reach any of the perametors to make fine

God aweful right out of the box, as it literally cut automatically so
much of the low end that not only did it just naturally with no

are ear bleeding piercing! I thought with the e q 3/7 band plugin, I
could maybe notch up the lows around 200hz a bit, but nope? I can't
get to a single one of the controls in the plugin. If I press vo+space
on a plugin window, it doesn't seem to close. Instead it just shits
there and does nothing. Routing the mouse pointer then doing
vo+shift+space isn't working either. If I hit command W, it closes the
window behind it, which generally is the mix window, instead of
closing the plugin. Pressing shift+R, shift+S, or shift+M on any
selected tracks isn't working. Within a plugin the plugin combo box
window is reported the incorrect plugin that is loaded. It's saying
something about plugin package A A something or another native. The
truth! is I actually! have the 3/7 band e Q window up instead.

This guy just wants to dump his stuff on you. If you think you are willing to

As for the HD question, I would consider what kind of projects you plan on

If you make a selection within a range, playing back will lose your

we need more resources including having them pointed out in the documentation
that avid writes. I did mention this list to them in my survey I got about a
month after I bought and registerd my pro tools system. We do need to be
nice about the accessibility when we point out issues as well as appear at

Elastic audio is usable! :)

2012-03-27 Thread CHUCK REICHEL
Elastic audio is usable! :)
Long explanation Read the PT manual! ;)
Short story!
Import a drum loop in to PT.
Click on the Elastic Audio Plug-in selector button in the edit window.
Select ✓ Rhythmic from the list, because it's a Drum loop.
Next click on the Timebase selector and choose (ticks) allowing the audio to
dynamically change along with the tempo as if it were midi.
OK thats it! :)
Now the fun!!!
Go to Regions menu and select Conform to Tempo and bang the drum loop is now
playing back in time with your pt session tempo!
If you want to transpose say a melodic elastic audio loop just go to transpose
window and bang it up or down to taste!
Also quantization of the elastic audio is available if you want.
Just a note I accomplished this using a PT HD3 system running pt 9.3..

Re: Automation snap shots

2012-03-18 Thread CHUCK REICHEL
Hi Steve,

First thing to do is to only show that track you want to work on to avoid
confusion.

Next find the Track View selector button in the edit window for that track.
VO space bar on the Track View selector button and choose Volume
Next Hit command 4 on the num pad to get in to the automation window and make
sure that Volume automation is checked.

Next scrub in the track and then hit command A to select the Volume for the
entire track.
Now hit Write to Current the key command is command slash
This will write the currently displayed volume setting across the whole track
so when you write automation to that track it will return to the original
volume you set.
Now find the section of your track you want to change the volume and set edit
in and edit out points or in other words make a selection!
Change the volume fader for that track but do not hit play Un till you do this
next step.

Hit the key command Trim to Current by hitting command shift slash this
will set the track to that new volume change you chose only for the selected
section of your track.

Bang your done hit play! :)
If you don't like hit command z! ;)
and try it again until you reach the desired level! LOL
YMMV
Call me for fine details if you want.

you need a mouse and not VO spacebar for this. Chuck, the answer to
not needing sighted help for the gray bar is to use the VO resize
window command until you are sure the mouse is always where you need
it to be. In my case I've had to resize different ways for different

 Hi Jon,
I have a friend that does scratching this way.
Bounce the vocal rap track and burn a cd then put it into a DJ cd player
that can scratch and take audio out from dj box and bang it in to pt!
Now you can move it into position in pt if you don't scratch in time! :)
 Its quick but works fine.
May be someone has a better way but this will get er done! :)
 YMMV

 Hey all,

Does anyone know how to put the effect on vocals like a DJ is holding
the spinning record and stopping it to give it that scratching and
quick repeating effect? I'm doing an album for a hip hop artist and he
asked if I could do that to one section of the vocals and I have no
ideabut of course I said Sure!

 Thanks!

Re: How to select multiple tracks without a controller.

2012-03-07 Thread CHUCK REICHEL
Hi Sonar,

All you half to do is to Command Click the track with the mouse while in the
Track List Table

and bang discontiguous tracks will be selected! :)
Heres the Rub! ;)
You half to make sure the Track List Table
Is resized over to the right about 30% by having some one grab the gray bar at
top right of Track List Table.
Thats it!
No sweat?

YMMV
Give a call if you want.

Hi Kevin, I'm a big fan of your music, really awesome, especially the
metal stuff. :) I found 1 podcast from you explaining Pro Tools basics
 and 2 more
about editing. Are there any more around, please do more because you
explain things in a way that's more logical than reading through these
 messages. When
you say show only the tracks you're working with do you mean go
through every track and hide the others in order to select the tracks
 you want to edit?
That seems like it would take forever if you were working with 30 or
more tracks and wanted to edit say 2, 10, 17, 23 etc. Is this the main
 reason people
on here have control surfaces? I don't get why Pro Tools doesn't have
an easy way to select tracks that aren't right next to each other.
 Also, can you
please tell me where I have to be to use the command A option and
highlight all of the tracks? I've tried the mix and edit windows and
 the track table
but command A doesn't work for me yet.

One way to do it is to show only the tracks you are working with. Then, in
the track list, when you are using shift, control, P or Semi Colon, only the
tracks that are showing will be selected.

 Hope this helps.

Hello is that really the only way? With sonar it was so easy to just
move down and select any track you want in any order. Is there no way
in Pro Tools to shift click or anything like that? If I want to
highlight all tracks for editing with command A what section of Pro
Tools do I have to be in?

Hello how can I select tracks for editing that aren't next to each
other with the keyboard. It's a standard keyboard, not a laptop. I
read about selecting tracks with control p and semicolon but what if
they're not next to each other?

Hey all, thanks so much for the great replies. Slau, no, I can't use a
control surface in a live club situation. These are large venues 5000
+ people and usually 5 engineers. I'm required to be quick while bands
are setting up which is why my posts keep talking about doing things
in a fast way. I'm trying not to interact as much as I can so I can
quickly move through tracks and select them. Chuck's idea is the one
I'd love but it's not working for me. Chuck, I had my GF resize the
window many different ways but unfortunately VO is not catching your
selection idea. Again, it seems however the window is resized when I
press VO space on a track it just beeps. Slau, I'm not sure what you
mean about scrubbing through a track but I can't use a control surface
until I'm home and then I can use a motor mix which I hope someone out
there can let me know if that will do the job. It worked great in PT
 5. Gord and Chris, the Protools is busy message is totally nuts. It
doesn't stop until I actually force quit and restart the machine. I
did try turning VO on and off but nothing. I have 2 machines, 1 with
Lion 7.2 and 1 with SL 6.8. They are both new 8 and 12 core machines
and the same behavior with everything happens on both. I'm using PT
HD9 in case anyone thinks that could be giving me trouble. Lots of ppl
talk about making sure the mouse is routed correctly but when I have
someone look at where my cursor is many times it's nowhere near where
it should be. For example, when I'm in a track list VO is reading
stuff to me that the mouse is not even close to. I do rout the mouse
to VO and tried VO to mouse but it seems many locations don't move
together. I've tried multiple ways of cursor tracking on and off and
it's also not all of the time. Our ideas here seem to be that VO goes
out of a window sometimes while interacting and the mouse isn't able
 to get to it.
