Touching the title "Now Playing 1 of 12" will show you the context menu
where one item is the year.

I don't think it's possible to show it directly on the standard "Now
Playing" screen. With the third party Custom Clock applet you can
design your own Now Playing screen that contains year, but be prepared
that the Custom Clock applet could be pretty advanced to setup.

It is frustrating but you need to understand that there are (at least)
2 seperate problems, both of which only impact certain people based on
THEIR specific combination of platform and music files. As such these
bugs can be very hard to prevent (and quite hard to fix).

They certainly weren't hit during beta AFAIK.

However, Andy has fixed the faad memory exception bug that was
occasionally causing faad to crash on alac playback. The "Can't open
file..." problem is different...

I've been trying to help with this but I can never recreate this error
on XP SP3 with 7.6. I've used example files sent by people with the
problem and they all work fine on my system.

At one point it looked like the alac files were possibly being
misinterpreted as AAC (or MPEG-4 as SBS refers to them) and hence faad
was not being invoked - the native AAC decoder was being invoked
instead.

This won't work, hence the advice to check your file types to ensure
that MPEG-4 is set to stream as FLAC via faad (same as "Apple
Lossless".

If you turn on player.source logging you can see exactly what SBS is
trying to do when you play a track...

This is NOT the default.

However, this is only a workaraound (if I'm correct about the alac
files being wrongly identified as AAC).

There may also be a problem with the tags generated via iTunes, but I
can't comment on that...I think Copperstate has been looking at that.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Any manual control over screen dimming?

2010-04-17 Thread JJZolx

You can also switch from automatic brightness control to manual
brightness. Then you set a single brightness level (it also dims very
slightly after 10 seconds). Not real convenient if you have to dig
through the menus to change it, and there's no brightness button on the
remote any more.

It's for connecting to Squeezebox Servers that aren't on the local
network. The server/player discovery won't work across subnets, so
you'd have to explicitly enter an IP address of the remote server.
They really buried it in the settings, though.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Squeezebox and Musepack

2010-04-17 Thread Andy Grundman
The short answer is that we currently support SV7 (and I think
earlier) versions.

The long answer is that for whatever reason the MPC team wanted to
make their format even harder to adopt by completely changing
everything for SV8. In doing so they also rewrote the decoder (now
mpcdec instead of mppdec) and the new decoder does not have the right
command-line options for us to use it as a drop-in upgrade. I have
talked to them about this but they weren't really interested in adding
the missing features. I think there are probably literally only a
handful of people who care about MPC so it's not really worth our time
to try to patch their decoder. So if you have new material you want to
encode in a lossy format and are considering SV8 I would request that
you think again and use another format.

Did you find this one yet? I seem to have forgotten to respond so if you
haven't getten it yet its:

settings>brightness>minimum brightness

Just move the slider to where you want the minimum brightness to be.
This is the brightness of the screen when its dark in the room. It can
go all the way down to completely black.

[SlimDevices: Touch] Squeezebox and Musepack

2010-04-17 Thread bhobba

Last night I was mucking around with various players that claim to
playback musepack files and found a few interesting things. Some
player's that claimed to playback musepack didn't,some played back a
few but failed on others, and the only one that didn't have any
problems was Foobar. The nearest I can figure is although they did
have the musepack codec it was not the latest version. I haven't got a
squeezebox yet but am looking to get a touch a bit down the line. But
since I have a lot of musepack files it is a bit of a worry if the
touch has similar problems. Does anyone know if the touch will play
back all musepack files? I know it requires trans-coding through
slim-server - I am not worried about that - my concern is will it
actually play.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] But... It sounds soooo good

Small world!

I bought the Gamma 2 pre-built from Mister-X. I'm a DIYer normally, but
I didn't want to fuss with the surface mount chips in the Gamma 2. I
figured it was worth the extra cost to just buy it assembled and
tested.

Anyhoo, I got the Touch on Thursday and the Gamma 2 today. I've had a
fun day playing with everything. I'm very happy with both products.
I'll have to connect the analog outs of the Touch to my preamp so that
I can compare them to the output through the Gamma 2.

No, it's the other way around. The Touch can share an attached USB
drive over the network so that it can be accessed from a computer, i.e.
the Touch itself would be acting as a NAS.

[SlimDevices: Touch] Loss of clock - standalone, no internet

2010-04-17 Thread R Johnson

My SB Touch arrived at the office yesterday. It fired up nicely with a
wired connection to my router and downloaded the current firmware. I
inserted an 8GB SDHC card with music content. Worked very nicely.
Then I removed the ethernet connection and ran it standalone with an
analog connection to my office mini-system. I liked the nice digital
clock in "off" mode. It was automatically set to the right time! I
pulled the SD card to see what new cache files had been created. Then
put the SD card back.

I unplugged the Touch and brought it to my apartment, where I have no
internet service (apart from possibly sponging from a neighbor's
wireless network). Surprisingly, it took a little fooling around to
get the Touch going. But there's no more digital clock. I tried
selecting the various clock "screen-savers" for the "stopped" or "off"
cases. No joy. Sometime a "sample" clock would come up, but not
showing the correct time or date.

Very curious. User error or system/hardware design?

[SlimDevices: Touch] Misc. Touch questions

2010-04-17 Thread MadCityGeoff

Forgive me if this is obvious, but is there any way to add an item to
the Favorites list on the Touch? SBS on the host computer has various
options, like the heart button for individual tracks and the "New
Favorite" button in the Favorites list, but I don't see anything for
the Touch internal server. I'd really like to add a URL for the KEXP
live stream. (Aside: does anybody know if it's possible to play the
KEXP uncompressed stream on the Touch?)

Second: After playing back some tracks from the music library on an
external USB hard drive, I've noticed that the Touch seems to use
"gapless playback" so that one track starts right after another with no
dead air. I don't recall this happening with earlier Squeezebox models.
Is there a way to defeat this feature?

Thanks!

[SlimDevices: Touch] Touch tagging issues

2010-04-17 Thread MadCityGeoff

Here are a couple of issues that have arisen in two days of playing with
the Touch. I have my Touch connected to an external hard drive via USB.
I'm also running SBS on my Mac with OS X Snow Leopard. I have identical
libraries on the Mac and the USB drive on the Touch. Most of the files
are in Apple Lossless (ALAC) format.

The first issue has to do with accessing files via multiple entries in
the artist list. The list shows names from both the Artist and Album
Artist tag. For example, tracks on a classical album might have "JS
Bach" in the Artist field and "Yo-Yo Ma" in the Album Artist field. The
album shows up in the artist list twice, once for Bach and once for
Yo-Yo. If I try to select a track from this album on the external USB
drive from the Yo-Yo Ma entry on the artist list, I get a spinning icon
and no music. However, if I select the same item from the Bach entry,
the track plays.

That's on the external USB drive. If I switch libraries so that the
Touch accesses the files on my Mac over wi-fi, the problem goes away. I
can access the track through Bach or Yo-Yo.

The second issue is also related to tagging. The internal Touch server
seems to throw a bunch of tags into the Artist list. Not just Album
Artist--which I see on my Mac too--but the WRT tag on ALAC files too. I
don't see those on the Mac.

For instance, I've got a bunch of Velvet Underground albums. I ripped
them using iTunes and they've all got "Lou Reed" in the WRT tag. When I
run SBS on my Mac and click Lou Reed, I just see his solo albums.
However, on the Touch with the external USB drive, clicking Lou Reed
shows his solo records and all the albums with the Velvets. If I select
one of these Velvet tracks, I get the spinning icon and no music as
described above. However, I can access the music via the artist entry
for Velvet Underground.

It really would be nice if the two versions of the server were more
consistent. Someone on the tagging forum said that there's no way to
turn off display of Album Artist tags in Apple Lossless files. If
that's the case, you should at least be able to use them to play music.

You can ignore them by swiping left to right. Then you won't get
another prompt for (I believe) 12 hours. I don't think there's any
easy way to avoid them, but you could probably figure something out if
you know how it works.

On startup Squeezebox Server goes out to update.slimdevices.com and
downloads a firmware version file for connected players. If the
version is newer than that installed on the player then it downloads
it. The server repeats the check for new firmware every 12 hours that
it's running.

http://update.slimdevices.com/update/firmware/7.5.1/fab4.version

http://update.slimdevices.com/update/firmware/7.5.1/fab4_7.5.1_r8714.bin

The firmware is downloaded into the server's cache/updates folder. SbS
then notifies the player. I suppose you could try making the updates
folder read-only, but if you're running beta software it's probably in
your best interest to keep abreast of the firmware updates and the bug
fixes that they contain.

I think you can install the official 7.5.0 release if you don't want the
firmware upgrades. I don't think there is any way to avoid them if you
like to run the latest 7.5.1 nightly release.

I've had some idea to look if it's possible to patch it so it doesn't
show the notification unless there is at least 2 weeks since the last
upgrade.

You need to install it through Settings/Advanced/Applet Installer,
please note that you have to uncheck to "Recommended Only Applets"
checkbox for it to be visible.

If you tried to install it a few hours ago it might have failed because
I had some server problems on my download page.

After installation it's found in Settings/Screen/ScreenSavers/Custom
Clock Settings.

Please note that to do any configuration besides using the bundled
styles, you will need to also install Custom Clock Helper plugin in
your Squeezebox Server.

See the wiki page for more information:

paltomare;536725 Wrote:

I just tried a backward approach -- applying the ideas in 'this thread
about Radio IR' (http://forums.slimdevices.com/showthread.php?t=69634)
to update the /usr/share/jive/jive/irMap_default.lua file on my Touch
so that it would be hard-coded to accept JVC codes instead of Slim
(e.g. map arrow_down to the JVC code 0xf78b instead of the Slim
code 0x7689b04f). I didn't have any luck, but I have a pre-release
hardware build, I think at least two revisions older than the retail
units. So you might have better luck. The basic idea is to SSH into
Touch, cd to /usr/share/jive/jive and edit the irMap_default.lua file,
changing the hex values. Once you do that, you'll need to reboot Touch
for the changes to take effect (simply restarting the 'jive' user
interface app does not suffice). If you're comfortable with Linux and
vi, I'd suggest you try it. Save a copy of irMap_default.lua in case
you have to revert, and give it a shot. I'm pretty skeptical -- I think
it may be the case that the IR circuits on Touch have either been
programmed to ignore JVC codes (which would make sense -- the Touch UI
should be more responsive if the IR circuit doesn't bother it with
every silly IR signal that comes its way), or perhaps are even
physically incapable of recognizing both Squeezebox and JVC codes --
see 'this comment from Felix'
(http://forums.slimdevices.com/showpost.php?p=518771&postcount=5) which
isn't entirely clear about whether the IR limitation discussed in *that*
thread is an intrinsic hardware issue or design choice.

[SlimDevices: Touch] Now Playing Screen Update Issues

2010-04-17 Thread metalbob

I hooked up my Touch and all things seemed fine. I played a few tracks
on my Rhapsody account and tried to switch tracks. Track switched
fine, but the Now Playing screen did not. It remained the same on the
previous artist and song. I factory reset the unit with the little
button above the power supply and started again. I tested an internet
radio station, went back to Rhapsody and started playing tracks again.
The screen stays on the internet radio station. I am able to navigate
around the unit, but the Now Playing screen will not update.

Just before I typed this, I discovered the web-based remote control on
MySqueezebox. I tried that as well and it will not change.

triode,

network test can be read either way - test the network between this
device and server or test entire network - therefore some people,
especially without all the history, will make an interpretation which
doesn't match reality.

those of us that are natural english speakers are divided by a common
language, heaven help those who are using it as a second language.

I think 'connection test' may be less likely to be misinterpreted.

the tool is still useful but unfortunately not definitive when
trouble-shooting as I expected - identifying low CPU power could be
equally useful. In fact identifying that network+CPU is insufficient
would be a valid test to highlight that issues are not SBS/Squeeze but
'system' (nearly used 'network' there, damn)

[SlimDevices: Touch] Aarrg! SB Touch + SBS 7.5 = waste of money...

2010-04-17 Thread AudioFrog

Ok I am frustrated. I have an SB2 and 2 days ago purchased a SB Touch
which mandates SBS 7.5. I have installed SBS 7.5, 7.5.1 + 7.6 and NONE
of them will FIX the 'Cannot open D:\Itunes' issue. I have a large
Itunes library completely made up of ALAC files and I cannot listen to
any of them. This is such a huge bug for a product that supposedly had
been delayed to make sure everthing worked out of the box.

I have read the threads about this issue and have tried different SBS
builds, different FAAD.EXEs (even one that a none-Logitech person
modified to try and fix this issue) and none of them work.

SBS has always been the Achilles Heel of this product line and when it
works it works well but it has been plagued with bugs that somehow make
it thru 'QA'. I was hoping this would be plug and play but I am ready to
throw the Touch thru a window.

Sorry for the rant. This is just so unacceptable.

I too am very pleasantly suprised by the quality of the analogue
outputs on the Touch. I wasn't expecting this at all. It is miles
better than the Duet reciever that the touch is replacing in my system.
I have it feeding flacs from a USB drive into my primaluna valve amp
directly and it sounds wonderful. Taut bass, plenty of detail, clear
mids, realistic soundstage etc

The Touch's analogue outs are very, very close in quality to the
digital out from Touch into Lavry DAll actually. I'm going to do some
more testing but may no longer requrie the DA11 which would be an
unexpected bonus as I bought the Touch principally for it's improved
digital output.

And such good vaue too vis-a-vis normal hi-fi prices. Good work
Logitech!! If you could just fix the issue with the internal server not
connecting to mysqueezebox.com you may have just about made the perfect
audio streamer!!

Get at least a 2G so that you can use the volume keys (1G doesn't have
them)... OK, you probably won't find any 1Gs anymore
The big one (32GB) is a 3G which is a bit faster on scrolling and load
times but that's it.
All of them work fine with iPeng.

You are aware of Help->Quick Tutorials->Albums/Playlists?
If you only want to play single tracks you can set "Settings->iPeng
Settings->Play Single Tracks"

iPeng's general qualities are up to others to judge, but generally
speaking iPeng works as well with the touch as with other Squeezeboxes
and with the server on the Touch as well as with other incarnations of
Squeezebox Server. Relatively speaking it's even a bit faster since the

Puh. Yes, but. You need to use YOUR iTunes account to purchase the App.
You could do that by connecting your friend's iPod to your iTunes and
buying the App n your iTunes. This means all of your friends' music an
apps will be wiped off the iPod (he can restore them later).

App Store purchases are bound to the Account and you can install them
on several devices (5 I believe). You will of course lose one of these
devices while trying, no idea whether there's a way to reclaim that.

It doesn't support plugins, yet, but that's going to come.

I don't know HTC desire but having the Hero myself I can't acknowledge
that. My hero was new when I bought it, it's now 9 months old and four
(!!!) software generations behind on Android with no official way to
upgrade and half of the Apps in the Marketplace don't run on it anymore
(SqueezeCommander works). Get a newer generation Android phone. Plus
Google/HTC have to fix this if they don't want to kill off the Android
platform.

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] But... It sounds soooo good

2010-04-17 Thread eedork

Agreed. The analog output from the Touch definitely sounds better (in my
opinion, of course) than the SB3 it is replacing. Overall I'm very
impressed with the Touch. It looks and feels excellent, and the sound
quality is better than expected. I though the original SB3 was very
good, but the Touch is just better all-around.

I also just recently picked up an outboard DAC (my first ever) and will
give it a try with the Touch. The DAC is an AMB Gamma 2. Like the Touch,
the Gamma 2 seems to be very well built and looks nice as well.

[SlimDevices: Touch] Customizable 'Now Playing' screen?

Am I the only one who thinks the Touch needs a Customizable 'Now

Maybe automaticly switch different 'Now Playing' screens? Put
information on the cover art instead next to the cover art?
I really miss Music Information Screen with Title Switcher

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] SSH into my Touch, any nice things to explore?

2010-04-17 Thread Mnyb

It is an "easy" way to change network settings.
for example set static ip on the Touch

Btw for some reason the prompt is "outside" the files system "cd /"
fix that, if you want to learn some basic linux skills you can use it
for that.

get a good linux book (linux bible is ok) or google some shell
commands

like ls ( dir in dos)
cd is change directory

try ls -la for a more comprehensive list

Your network settings is in the file "interfaces"

/etc/network/interfaces

try this # cat /etc/network/interfaces

cat is a command that "prints" a file to the screen so now you can read
it

There is a text editor on-board the Touch "vi" it is horrible but very
light

just # vi file_name

example:
# vi /etc/network/interfaces

!! google some good instructions on vi before doing this, frustration
guarantee included.

Want to edit your wireless settings fast:

/etc/wpa_supplicant.conf

learn to use scp or get winscp so you can copy files

I have as an experiment changed to boot sound on my controller and the
boot screen.

There is an example in the wiki about changing highlight color, you now
that black bar under the menu text's

You can use scp to fetch the "messages" file if you want to read the
logs if you have a bug to track.

# reboot

reboots it

Or learn lua and do some awesome applets as Erland does

Yes, The Swiss like the bells so much that the national radio station
has an archive of church bells ringing where you can even pick which
church in which part of the country you want to hear:

http://www.drsmusikwelle.ch/www/de/drsmusikwelle/72657.glocken-der-heimat.html

Now if there were only a way to get the Touch to play these!

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] Analogue/digital VU

2010-04-17 Thread m1abrams

Cool I got the Patch Installer working and have jstraws wonderful VU
meter.

2 questions:
1. I noticed when switching to the VU meters during now playing that
the Song info and play scrobbler are overlapping above the meters.
NOTE: This is the same behaviour on the stock meter too. Anyone else
notice this?

2. Is it possible to get your Custom Clock applet to use jstraws
meters?

Re: [SlimDevices: Touch] No Access to My Apps with internal server

2010-04-17 Thread toby10

Yeah, it sure looks like the ongoing new player issues having trouble
logging on to (and staying connected to) the MySB EU servers.
Odd that the Touch as just a player seems to function fine with EU MySB
but has problems when using the inbuilt server.

It apears that the Logitech supply chain does not work that well here.

Not being in the EU probably is a slight complication, but I'm sure
that Logi has a guy who knows how to fill out the tax form.

Thet would be a reason to go to one of those countrys. I would then
have to find a shop that stocks it and pay full sticker price.

You can basically do pretty much exactly what you want, so the
questions are:
- Where do you see improvement potential ?
- Do you have something that you feel is frustrating now that you would
like a better solution to ?
- Is some functionality missing which you would like ?

If you have some graphics skills I suppose you could start with trying
to improve the graphics files stored in the various directories under:
/usr/share/jive/applets/WQVGAsmallSkin/images/

If some graphics skills you can also do your own clock style with the
third party Custom Clock applet and Custom Clock Helper plugin
combination, for some ideas see:
http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/Custom_Clock_styles
http://wiki.slimdevices.com/index.php/Custom_Clock_applet

If you have some development skills it's time to learn lua and
implement that "must have" applet which is going to make you famous.

If you just want to install third party stuff, you don't need ssh, then
it's enough to go to Settings/Advanced/Applet Installer and start
installing stuff. Uncheck the "Recommended Only Applets" checkbox and
you will see all applets and not just those Logitech and senior users
recommend.
Just exploring with no idea what you want to do won't work because as I
said initially, basically everything could be done within the
restrictions of the hardware.

If you have been following the Touchs' progress, you should know that
the devices were produced last year and have been waiting in some
warehouse for the last 6 or 7 months.

If they are discounting them in the US already I'm sure it would make
sense to sell a couple over here for a much higher price and make some
real money :)

[SlimDevices: Touch] Squeezebox Touch & Icon Amp

2010-04-17 Thread mdecorte

My Squeezebox Touch came in this week and I paired it with an Icon
Amp at 48W.

They are a perfect little pair. The Icon is the same width as the
Touch and acts as a small platform. Sounds great!

Regarding the touch, it's very very nice. The UI is intuitive and
responsive. Sound is great. Sync's perfectly with my three other
Squeezebox Booms.

I hope that Logitech makes a version of this that is just a battery
powered remote. That would be a very nice replacement for the duet.
Maybe they could put a small amp in the duet receiver?

It would be especially nice if the Touch Remote could replace the
Harmony remotes. Upgrade the IR Range Extender with Wi-Fi and now the
Touch Remote could control IR and Wi-Fi devices.

http://www.nuforce.com/hp/products/iconamp/index.php

P.S. no relationship with Icon or Logitech.
