They say: System 7.6.1 Any Macintosh model that has 16Mb of memory or more. If with any version of System 7.5.3 or higher, you should update to at least 7.6.1 (or higher) because for you, this system amounts to bug fixes. If you are considering an upgrade to 7.6.1 from 7.5.1 or earlier then moving to 7.6.1 will definitely impact performance in a very noticible way, yet there may not be any features in the new OS that you require. The exceptions being those connected to Ethernet networks can take advantage of the higher transfer speeds of OpenTransport built in to 7.6.1 and higher. Memory requirements for System 7.5.1 can be as low as 2Mb, where 7.6.1 is going to require around triple that. Comments: If you decide to upgrade to System 7.6 from any MacOS version prior to System 7.5.2 be absolutely certain that you update the SCSI drivers on your hard drive. You will be given an option to do this when you run the System software installer. NOTES: Powertalk is not compatible with 7.6. OpenDOC and Cyberdog will not work on 68030 or 68040 based modes. If you do not know what these things are then this warning does not effect you. Don Pruitt Actually, OpenDoc can be made to work on 68K Macs with 7.6.x, however not by using the installers included with the system. What you need to do is download OpenDoc 1.2 from Apple's older software downloads site if you want OpenDoc with 7.6.x. At the time of 7.6, there was a fairly serious problem with an extension called the CFM-68K Runtime Enabler. Due to this Apple decided not to include the extension, or any Apple software that relied on it in the 7.6 release. This problem has scince been fixed, and software that uses this extension (including OpenDoc, CyberDog, LaserWriter 8.4.x 8.5.x from Apple, and Internet Explorer from that other company)can now work on 680x0 Macs. However, there is one extra hurdle to getting OpenDoc, Cyberdog and LW 8.4 on a 7.6 68K system, the included installers only work on Power Macs. Newer installers for OpenDoc and LaserWriter 8.4.x (or 8.5.1)that do work can be downloaded from Apple's Older Software Downloads Page (Thes products include a newer version of the CFM-68K Runtime Enabler). I do not know if or where a version of Cyberdog that would work could be gotten from. Note that the 7.6.1 update included version 4.0 of the CFM-68K Runtime Enabler, which corrected the problems, but did not include any of the Apple software that relied on this extension. WARNING!!! Anyone using System Software 7.1.x or 7.5.x on a 68020, 68030 or 68040 Mac with a version of the CFM-68K Runtime Enabler prior to 4.0 should seriously install version 4.0 to avoid potential system crashes! The extension is also avalible seperatly on the Older Software Downloads Page. P.S. When deciding which OS to run on a LC III, remember that 7.6 takes about twice the RAM and twice the Hard Drive space as 7.5.5. Whilst 7.6's performance would likely be OK, you had better be prepared for the disk space and RAm it would consume. (7.6.1 takes about 70MB of hard drive space and 6-8MB RAM on my Centris 650, whilst 7.5.5 takes about 40MB of disk space, and 4-5MB RAM on either the 650 or a LC II. 7.1.1 on the LC II takes up even less-and is probbly the best choice for performance on '030 Macs, but is a bit light on features. 7.5.5 is, in my opinion, the best compromise between features, space and performance for a 68030 Mac) -- Vintage Macs is sponsored by http://lowendmac.com/ and... the old tandy color computer series was based off of the 6809 chip and had a nice operating system specifically for that chip: OS-9. it was a unix based system with networking capabilities (however, limited). not sure if this helps. well, it mounted and i formated it and all seemed well-- until i did a cold boot. apparantly i have to remount it after each boot. any ideas? Partioning the drive would have wrote a new partion table so the mac would have asked if you wish to initalize rather than format which is much quicker. i just decided the heck with the hub for now and wired a crossover cable direct from the mac to the pc, and then limited the pc to 10mbps. the link light for each card is now lit, but i am still having no luck communication-wise. darren gave me the following settings for the mac: Mactpc = 192.168.0.x, subnet 255.255.255.0, gateway 192.168.0.1, dns 192.168.0.1, domain gotocrystal.net. x = a number between 2 and 254, with alittle room left. That seems to work. (I don't know why the list server refuses to acknowledge emails with attachments or styled text, but we have no control over that.) The ICshare nic will have the default address of 192.168.0.1, the only protocol used is tpc and since the mac doesn't do netbios or smb, by default it ignores workgroup settings. also, is there a way to make sure the mac is broadcasting-- if windows you can look in network neighborhood and see the computer you are on Ping? Unless you have a program like Basilisk, pcmaclan or some whiz bang version of windows that does client and server duties you will not see the mac with the pc, pcmaclan will allow you to see the mac in the network neighborhood if installed. You can use Dave on the mac, in which case you'd need the workgroup name for the mac. ICS shares the internet connection, not files. The two machines are invisable to each other without other software. Setting the mac to recieve the address via dhcp will show you in two ways whether the mac recieves a address or not. Once the mac reboots it should have a 192.168.0.x address in the tcp/ip control panel, a different address means somethings not right (something like a 169.x.x.x) and also means a really long wait before you reach the desktop. I guessed your isp's domain was gotocrystal.net from your return address which may be wrong, if so fixing it may help. Using Winipcfg the domain name you need on the mac is whats in the Hostname box minus the name of the pc you ran Winipcfg on. The client side of pcmaclan is looking for a appleshare server which is different to a normal mac with filesharing enabled. Also check any firewall you may have Pcmaclan should find the mac if file sharing is enabled and you have selected a share and given permissions in the user and groups control panel. I got the card in and the mac acknowledges that i now have an ethernet card. However, on my 10/100 hub there is nothing lit up to acknowledge that the mac is there. Someone sent settings for MacTCP. I don't seem to have this. I do, however, have TCP/IP in the control panel. Is this the same? is that the only place i put in these settings? For instance, if a computer has 2 MB on the motherboard and accepts two 4 MB SIMMs (but nothing larger), there's no reason in the world to create ROMs that can support more than 10 MB. There's a huge reason *not* to make a ROM that only supports 10 MB when it's clear that larger SIMMs are going to come into play within a few months... If this limitation is the the ROM thanks to our friends at Apple, and if it is patchable by someone with the necessary skills, why wouldn't Connectix or someone come out with such a patch. ABS glue backed up with a piece of flat ABS sheet for strength. The glue actually partially dissolves the plastic so it makes a very strong bond. You'll need to remove any paint or other coating from the inside surface where the backing sheet will be. I was considering using a metal backing sheet, possibly using screws. (FWIW, It's the frame the supports the trackpad click button that's broken.) I think I like your suggestion of ABS plastic better, and I should get a better bond glueing plastic/plastic than metal/plastic. That and most metal sheets tend to flex. Unfortunately, I had a slip of the fingers whilst doing the disassembly and managed to smash one of those damn little connectors that the keyboard plugs into. Since I'm not going to brave surface mount soldering on the scale required to replace the thing in such cramped confines, this will entail messy repair with my chosen glue, possibly without the benefit of a backing sheet (given the size of the thing.) If I was to do this, could I safely consider the repair to be permanent? Once I stick it all back together, I plan on selling the 3400, and I don't plan on taking someone's money only to have the thing break on them a few weeks or months down the track. New face here. Just picked up a couple of IIci's for play learning. Adam, have you considered something like QuickKeys (haven't used it) or Tempo II Plus? The latter was more a scripter than macro recorder. Thanks for the suggestions :) I haven't used either before, but I'll start scouring abandonware sites for them and see what they can do. Now for something else... If you had to glue some Mac plastics back together (minor interior damage in my 3400) what type would you use? I tried superglue, but it didn't hold (probaby due to the tiny contact area). I was thinking of Araldyte or something similar??? AppleScripting
I not sure that this belongs here, but can anyone recommend a decent (free? online?) guide to AppleScript and/or give me an idea of what it's capable of - particularly in terms of automating 68k web browsers. I use my IIfx to hook up into the http front-end of my employer's server farm and hope to automate the process of clicking a half dozen links and filling in a stupid form every time I do so. Apple must have done something seriously stupid in the ROM and/or the memory map, because that's not the kind of number you're likely to get from a hardware limitation. I made a Word document into a diary w/a password that I have been trying to figure out since 1990! Would be a KICK to go back and read what mind-blowing stuff was troubling me back when i was 20! ;-) You could probably find something to crack those files open. I had a tool like that for PC WordPerfect files, and it saved my butt on more than one occasion. Hmmm... I think anything else would probably fall into the category of worthless %*@: - like the little freeware app that turned the apple in the Menu Item into a revolving globe ...etc, etc, snip I can't imagine anyone compiling a list of silly applications with out at least a passing reference to the Talking Moose. Gosh, no one has any suggestions regarding my original question? If you went back in time to the System 6 days, what utilities, system software, applications, and other cool stuff would you set your machine up with? What stuff would you guys consider essential, or really useful, or at least really cool? Well, on my Plus(es) I used MS Works 2.0a for most productivity stuff. (read: calling BBSes using the Comms component, cause doing so on the Plus was just so cool...). Anyway, you get WP, SpreadSheet, Comms and a flat-file Database. Basic, useful, rather slick, and it all fits on an 800K diskette with room for your files. Well, that may have been true earlier, but the newer versions of PC-DOS were (IMHO) far superior to Microsoft's offerings, especially since MS-DOS 7 was never a full product (Version of DOS Win95 is run on top of, missing most utilities included in MS-DOS 6.22) I know this is getting way OT, but wasn't Digital Research's DR-DOS the best DOS of it's type. IIRC it was the first with memory optimisation, protected mode and the only DOS to reallyy exploit the extra features of the 286 processor. Unsurprisingly, MS-DOS was actually Seattle Computer Products 86-DOS acquired and rebranded by Microsoft, which was also called QDOS (Quick Dirty DOS.) Geez, at least the old viruses were clever. NVIR A (I had it for a while, didn't know it) caused the computer to bong twice on bootup, and would sometimes take hold of the speech synthesizer and say something to the effect of Don't Worry or Be Calm. I think it said Don't Panic, though only if you had MacinTalk installed. My Macs were heavily infested with nVir B, from when I bought my first Plus in 1996 until earlier this year when I got an SE/30 with SAM on the hard disk and cleaned out all my floppies. Re: serial connection between an old Mac and a Sun IPX
Heh, I thought I was the only one with a SparcStation IPX that I wanted to hook up to a Mac. I messed around with this a couple of months, and it is possible, but you need a serial cable that supports hardware-handshaking (IIRC). My standard Mac Serial Cable doesn't do this, bu I have a Mac to PC serial cable that does work. Give me a day or two to look it up, but IIRC, the IPX and Mac serial ports are for all intents and purposes, the same. I know I was able to hook my IPX up to my PC with a Mac-to-PC serial cable. That's my guess, either that or for a POS application. I remember seeing a compact Mac being used at a hotel check-in desk on some TV show, and alot of those things have special keyboards, but I can't really think of any real use for the mods you describe Maybe the blank keys had a special function when hooked to some mainframe...? Graphics program for LC2/CC
Hi, Can anyone recommend a decent (free/abandonware) program do display and perform basic manipulation of images on a LC II / Colour Classic-class machine. The formats I was hoping to view/edit are gif, jpeg and (very optionally) bmp. Also, does anyone have any experiences in converting gifs to PICTs on any platform? I tried to do that on my PC with PaintShop Pro, but the colours were _completely_ whacked out. (Like psychadellic ma.) Finally, I too would like to offer my sympathies over the New York/Washington attack. Even here in Australia, the event is receiving live, 24-hour coverage on the TV. Stupid email trick warning.
Hi all, Today I got an email from one Steven Pinette entitles Dialog letter june. The text of this letter reads: Hi! How are you? I send you this file in order to have your advice See you later. Thanks Rather lame English, huh? Examination of the attached letter reveals it to be a file entitled Dialog letter june.doc.pif. On a MSDOS/Windows PC, the .pif extension identifies a file as being a Program Information File, that is a file that provides Windows with instructions to run a given DOS program, and the parameters with which to do so. I'd be willing to bet that in this case, the PIF file instructs the PC to run, say format c: /q y. In another words this is undoubtably a trojan of some sort. The reason I'm mentioning this on the list, is because I use this email address exclusively for list correspondence and eBay sales, so there is a fair chance that a malicious user could be harvesting email addresses from these lists in some lame attempt to be some sort of cYb3r733r0r1s7 just like in the newspapers. This thing won't affect Macs, but I'm not the only one who uses a PC here so look out. Anyone who wants a forward of this email is welcome to it. P.S. Stripped down versions often came with answering machines for remote control, those were popular with hackers since with a little work they could do the same things as the more expensive DTMF dialers. :) These tone diallers were/are also popular with what alot of people call 'hackers' as some types (most notoriously the Radio Shack ones) can be re-crystalled and then used to defraud the coin tolling system used in American payphones. Such a modified device is called a red box. Unfortunately, the 'bot doesn't respond to DTMF tones, rather it responds to single and compund tones in the 1000-2800Hz range. If I can find a tone generation util, I'll try it, otherwise I'll just have to substitute my PC's Creative AWE-32. Also, IIRC, HyperCard 1.(something) could also be used to dial a phone number directly trough the modem. In this case you could hook up your rotary phone (Geez, I'm 18 and I remember these) and your Plus' modem in series and enjoy Mac controlled DTMF. Neat. Hi all, THE STORY: I recently got my hands on a decommisioned drain crawler which is a type of human controlled, robotic sled originally designed to travel up and down the stormwater/sewerage drainage system in search of cracks and what-not. Thinking this would be a cool thing to mess around with, I picked it up even though it lacks its controller unit. This isn't to much of a problem as it receives it's control instructions through a set of audio tones sent over a cable link, with each tone manipulating a certain function. In a week or so I'll be getting the chart that says what tones operate what so that's no problem. THE POINT: Where this becomes relevant to the list is that I'm planning on digging out my old PowerBook 100 and using it to generate the necessary tones and control the robot. I plan on hooking a cable to the audio-out jack and wiring this to the robot. The only problem is that the robot's control circuits have pretty tight tolerances on what tone quality is acceptable, so my question is: Just how clean a tone can the PB 100 or average Vintage Mac's sound system produce? For example, if I programmed the '100 to produce a 1500Hz tone, how likely is the result to be 1500Hz as opposed to something 200Hz or so around it?
