They SHOULDN'T be able to steal your name if you can prove you were using it
first.

It's happened in hip hop a few times. Common had to drop the Sense from
his name because of some obscure band named Common Sense who had been
using it before him. The Notorious B.I.G. was originally Biggie Smalls, but
another rapper had already been using the name, so he couldn't.

i haven't read simon reynolds book yet but planning to when it's

you can also hear it in 'technodelic' by ymo and even in 'sands of time'

hello mark,
after doing a bit of searching at The Black Dog Towers website i've

12 of the The Black Dog - Live int Toronto 1997 demo cassette.
Both files are still available for download at The Black Dog Towers as

demo link for the files two 'department of dogma files.'
also check out the two other tbd tracks there as well as the bttb mix
(Back to the Basics)? enjoy! http://techno.dogsquad.co.uk/tbd/

a proper tracklisting still would be nice! ; )

Hey Greg!

You'd be surprised. There's a BEF track that Shake used to play out
that I can never remember the name of - I think it's Uptown Apocalypse
off

thats it I think!

although I should have explained myself a little better. I'm deffo not
surprised in any way that heaven 17 could make a track like that, I'm more
leaning towards the fact that mr reynolds lends so much weight to this
genre being a blueprint (or this particular record) for detroit techno.

Yeah, of course they must have listened to some of these records by
whichever means, radio/club dj etc, but, whenever you read an interview
with say, derrick may (aint that many interviews with juan discussing this
sort of stuff?), its all about mojo, ron hardy in particular, wbmx too, and
I must have listened to nearly 50 different ron hardy tapes, read almost
everything I beleieve I can read about him and I don't see that much
evidence of him in particular playing THAT much of this sort of music
(yeah, sure the odd track, but it wasn't the norm).

and then of course, with mojo, well, I just don't know anything about mojo.
there's nothing about him anywhere, and no one ever seems to want to talk
about him and I never heard a tape. maybe he used to cane this sort of
stuff. dunno.

Stowaways = Walkmans

there was all about that in the book too!
and the concept albums made around the stowaway!

good book! although maybe you could pick tons of holes in it though greg
having been around and that. maybe give it a try though!

 Where's Unsel Brown?

I wanna see the Luke Monteiro vs. Steve what's-his-face deathmatch. ;)

Good to see lots of old faces back on here!

OB313: Los Hermanos Live @ Panorama Bar last weekend were excellent for the two
tracks I caught of them (unfortunately we got there too late to see the whole
thing). Gerald Mitchell was baaad on the live keys. From what I saw, I'd
say it blew the Timeline show out of the water. Much more live at any rate. But
I'm not exactly Mr. UR so take that with a grain of salt.

Also on my Popkomm expedition I caught Fat Freddys Drop for the third time, who
were utterly fantastic. Possibly the best I've seen them. We almost caused a
riot calling for a second encore. That was bloody intense. Saw A Guy Called
Gerald and Sleep Archive at WMF, both of whom were not quite as good as when
I've seen them previously. Zip and Soulphiction (I'm pretty sure that's who
they were) were OK at Watergate. They played some really nice tracks but some
the set didn't have much flow. Also caught Lindstromm (I think) at Panorama Bar
(amazing venue BTW) and he was purty damn good. Berlin was great in general,
although as you can tell I didn't really go all-out on the clubbing. I just
really enjoyed the city though. Almost as much as London. ;) Thanks everyone
who helped me find the good stuff!

Hey

A while back when I was debating experimenting with filesharing (and can we
please miss discussing the morality of this this one time - we've done it
before and the points have been made, I use it for one thing only: checking
out records I have an inclination to buy before doing so, usually older
pieces which are only available second hand and so don't have mp3s up on
shop sites) everybody recommended Soulseek.
I've been using it for a while now but to be honest I'm not finding it as
useful for listening to rarities as I hoped.
For example right now I'm searching for Aquarian Project, t'n' i (I'm after
tracks by these 2 I was tipped off about by posts on this list!) and
Instant House and coming up with zero results and for Insync and only
getting 3 results (but that does prove my setup is actually working in some
fusion). At the time someone recommended leaving the search going for a
little while, these have been going for days.
I remember at the time someone saying you can get anything you want -
Bulgarian folk bands etc., obviously this isn't what I'm finding, what is
other people's experience?

Three or so years ago, the general search results in slsk were always
amazing. I think that over the years slsk users have closed up their
collections and only offer downloads to folks on their user list. I have to
agree with Fab. You are much better off getting' to know people in the chat
rooms... a friendly exchange will almost always lead to an invite to check
out mp3's. By the way, my slsk user name is faceless_corporation. Feel

I find that the 'wishlist' feature works much better than the regular
search. Go to wishlist, add a search string and leave it running all
day or more. Try leaving the same search runnign in wishlist and normal
search and you'll see a huge difference sometimes.

Definitely people aren't sharing as much. For some people their
collection maybe is too big, for others maybe they want to give
bandwidth to their buddies over random strangers but I've almost
never gotten a cold shoulder from someone I talked to online.

Re: (313) Juan Maclean tracks

2005-09-21 Thread Dan Bean

I agree that most of it is pretty average, certainly not groundbreaking!

But there are a few tracks in amongst the average ones that are
actually rather good. DFA,s remix of The Juan Maclean's 'Dance With Me'
is a great piece of slowed down tripped out mesmeric house music, and
Luomo has just done a good job of remixing Black Dice's 'Smiling Off'.

Unlike for Tom, Trance is very much a feature of my life, I hear it on
the radio, see coverage of it in the press and get blasts of it pumping
out of people's cars all the time. It fills the clubs and generally
pollutes my musical life, so I'd actually be very glad if someone came
along to kill it off. Unfortunately, if this were to happen, it would
just be replaced by another genre created with the exclusive aim of
making piles of cash, which is the root of the problem really. Maybe
I'll join Tom and bury my head in the sand after all...

(313) New music vs. New old music (was Juan Maclean)

2005-09-21 Thread lr2
Perhaps some folks play the tracks 'cuz they weren't around during the first
wave of that sort of music. If they haven't heard anything like it before
it's not hard to believe that this new output could excite them.

It's always interesting to me that there are people I meet who are really
into something they think is new but they are completely unaware of a
previous artist who did something similar. It happened to me when I first
got into the Orb...I was excitingly playing it for a crusty-hippie-co-worker
I had and I was enthusing on how different and fresh it sounded to me. He
suggested (with a slightly pained look of a parent trying to correct a
child's bad behavior) that I check out some dub. Up until that part I never
even knew dub existed. The Orb's rehashing of something that had already
been done (albeit combined creatively with new elements) set me on a
delightful path of rediscovery. That's actually one of my favorite elements
of listening to music and why I appreciate labels like Soul Jazz Records so
much...they help me unearth stuff I missed the first time.

On a related note I get grumpy when artists actually cover a track and don't
bother to acknowledge the original performer...I always see that as a missed
opportunity to educate people on music they're into...granted most of the
bigger acts will at least acknowledge the writing credits or sample credits
but I'd love it if they used some of their booklet space to expound on who
the artist was and why they covered it...imagine if Missy had done something
like the with Clear.

Though they're not techno, some of you might know BR54-9 or Squirrel Nut
Zippers...they're two acts that rose to some degree of fame by clever
incorporation of OLD material. When I first heard them I thought they were
so fresh and interesting never realizing that they were trawling through the
back catalogues of obscure country and jazz tunes respectively. It would
have been nice if they'd worn their influences a little more openly on their
sleeves so I could have had a better context to place their music in.

Whew...sorry, that kind of went on a bit eh?

these are all very good reasons why you should:
not listen to the radio

im not joking when i say that nothing makes me more irritated than

well yeah.
like music played at the Paradise Garage becoming vocal house and not Van

so when Derrick May plays a wicked jazz tune as a downtempo break towards
the end of his set you get people b*tching about how it sucks

There was an old Alex Kid tune that did it on fcomm back in about 98, think
it was on the castlesmadeofsand EP .
Really nice, but it started more deep-house than techno/electro.
So this probably doesn't help to much either!

couple of the tracks start with electro moods and then
work in the edited breaks.

The easiest way I've found to do it is by incorporating some ghettotech in

A good transition track is Hoes Take Off Your Clothes by DJ Assault.

Re: (313) New music vs. New old music (was Juan Maclean)

2005-09-21 Thread dave cronin
i have to say that i'm generally in the grumpy old man
camp: i've heard this before-- can't you kids play
something new?

but one positive side effect of the New Old Music
phenomena right now is the reintroduction of grit into
some of the music. even though most of the neo-acid
and neo-punk funk are waaay to clean for my taste, the
revival has had the effect of dirtying up a lot of
stuff. here in san francisco, the ubiquitous disco
house sound has become a lot less sterile and is (can
be) more distorted and dischordant.

another good side effect is that as much as i love my
80's punk funk, LCD Soundsystem sounds much better on
a modern sound system than A Certain Ratio.

I remember at the time someone saying you can get anything you want -
Bulgarian folk bands etc., obviously this isn't what I'm finding, what is
other people's experience?

artist info

Granny'Ark is the music project of nomadic media artist Michelle Irving.
Although officially a resident of Vancouver, Granny'Ark spends the other
part of her time at Zora Lanson Label's home base in Berlin. Her first
release Resurgo (2004) garnered praise from The Wire, XLR8R, De-Bug, and
was featured on the late John Peel's legendary Radio One show.
Granny'Ark's music can be described as a blend of explorations in
electroacoustic sampling, and musical structures of rhythm and melody.
Generally, Granny'Ark attempts to transform sounds into a progressive
soundscape that evokes a sense of mood or place in the listener.
Sometimes this might mean enticing them to dance. Her music is featured
in the internationally acclaimed documentary The Corporation and
another award winning Canadian documentary Scared Sacred. In the fall
Granny'Ark will be releasing her follow-up EP on Zora Lanson Label as
well as a collaborative project with Si Cut.db on Biphop. Granny'Ark's
Three Seas and One Bottle EP is available for download at
http://www.interdisco.net

Neil Wiernik (aka naw) has been extremely busy over the 12 months. The
last year has seen the release of two naw albums; “Green Nights, Orange
Days” on Noise Factory and “Terrain Vague” on Pertin_nce, as well as an
extensive European tour. Neil's production was recently described by The
Wire as having the kind of sharpness and clarity usually lost amid the
murk and decay of clicks and cuts and digital delays. Neil recently
moved back to Toronto and began working with long-time collaborator Greg
Smith in the creation of Vague Terrain, an entity which will promote a
series of eclectic electronic music showcases and the website of which
will act as a digital arts journal. More information on naw is available
at http:/www.noisefactoryrecordings.com

Akumu is Toronto’s Deane Hughes, composer of atmospheric ambiance,
shadowy beats and minimal manipulations. Formed as a solo project in
2000, Akumu has released three full-length albums on his own Spider
Records imprint. His newest CD, Magmas (2005) was conceived and written
in Guatemala, Honduras and Mexico; it is the follow-up to 2004’s Fluxes,
an ambient, zero-BPM recording of unflinching minimalism that The Wire
says “raises neat hackles across the skin.” For six months, Deane
traveled throughout remote locations, making binaural recordings from
which he created the drone- and loop-based instruments that form the
spine of material on both CDs. Akumu has performed live across Ontario
and Quebec, including 2005’s Mutek festival in Montréal, featuring visual
projections of original photography, animated collages and 2D/3D digital
experiments. His live sets highlight and improvise on Magmas and Fluxes
to create an immersive, flowing soundscape of micro-sonics, ambient
drones and low-frequency pulses. More information is available on Akumu
at http://spiderrecords.com/

Keeping with our mandate of integrating electronic music with digital
art, Vague Terrain will be welcoming back one of our earliest
collaborators, video artist Patricia Rodriguez. Formally trained in the
visual arts, Patricia is a multidisciplinary specialist, integrating
analog and digital technologies. She delights in playing with perception
and problem-solving. A keen synaesthete, Patricia enjoys the
neurological mixing of the senses. Her love for improvisation translates
into performances using movement, sound and light (including video and
film), as well as real-time collaborations with musicians and other
artists. She has shown her work alongside Richie Hawtin, Monolake, Kit
Clayton, Derrick May, Steve Bug, and Damo Suzuki of Can to name a few.
She has worked with several collectives including Clonk, Eight, Wabi,
Whipit, Die Lux, and Geekend. Patricia is currently the Art Director for
Substance Communications.

Thanks to all for the replies on this particularly Giannis, Fab, Martijn,
Jamil, Briggs, O, you're all on my user list (where you've priovided a name,
O you already were - we've talked before!).

Here's a reply I made to Giannis earlier today:

As far as the slsk thing goes what your answer indicates is
that really I should find another filesharing utility as I
really don't have the time to follow your advice! This isn't
meant in any snobby way: I'd really love to be able to do so
but in any given week on top of using my PC for it's
legitimate work purposes I usually manage to read my 313
mail, deal with any mail pertaining to my night and check
Piccadilly's mailout. If I have anytime left I may hunt on
Gemm for older stuff I'm after.
On top of this I'd love to watch Little Detroit, check out
other online shops (particularly Vinyl Underground here in
the UK and Submerge and Big50 stateside), buy records off
e-bay, look for books I'm after, visit yet more sites that
sound brilliant (Technotourist?) but I've never been to.
The reason I don't do all these things is because I just
don't have time. For me to be able to I'd have to find a way
to give up either eating, sleeping or working. The first 2
seem impossible to get round (and I'm not sure I'd really
want to!). Now where's that lottery ticket..

 Francis

 hey francis :)
i dont know if u know this, but most ppl in slsk who have intresting
files are on strict user list sharing only. So when u distribute a
global search , this function cannot access their files. So as u
understand it's all about getting to know the right ppl. A way to do
this is by entering intresting rooms and getting to know ppl who share
same intrest in music. One room i recommend is this- 313 .And believe
me, some real diamonds float in the slsk network

Giannis gave me a reply with a few good tips and thanks to the rest of you
I've got others to try too - particularly the Wishlist.

To answer some of the other points I do already donate to get privileges
but this doesn't help.
There seems to be 3 things:
Some people have moved on from slsk.
Many only share with others on their list.
Some new versions of Soulseek are incompatible with older ones or
themselves!

Question: any other p-2-p programm that u find good besides Soulseek?

No I haven't tried others, I'm a greenhorn with little time for
experimentation - I need you lot to do the hard work for me : )
Recommendations anyone?

really don't have the time to follow your advice! This isn't
meant in any snobby way: I'd really love to be able to do so
but in any given week on top of using my PC for it's
legitimate work purposes I usually manage to read my 313
mail, deal with any mail pertaining to my night and check
Piccadilly's mailout. If I have anytime left I may hunt on
Gemm for older stuff I'm after.
On top of this I'd love to watch Little Detroit, check out
other online shops (particularly Vinyl Underground here in
the UK and Submerge and Big50 stateside), buy records off
e-bay, look for books I'm after, visit yet more sites that
sound brilliant (Technotourist?) but I've never been to.
The reason I don't do all these things is because I just
don't have time. For me to be able to I'd have to find a way
to give up either eating, sleeping or working. The first 2
seem impossible to get round (and I'm not sure I'd really
want to!). Now where's that lottery ticket..

 hey francis :)
i dont know if u know this, but most ppl in slsk who have intresting
files are on strict user list sharing only.

Giannis gave me a reply with a few good tips and thanks to the rest of
you I've got others to try too - particularly the Wishlist.

To answer some of the other points I do already donate to get
privileges but this doesn't help. There seems to be 3 things: Some
people have moved on from slsk. Many only share with others on their
list.

It's his take on post-punk - PIL, Gang Of Four, Devo, Talking Heads etc - much
better than Energy Flash, less pretentious and much more thoughtful.
Mind you, I thought Reynolds was spot on about drugs and hardcore

Excuse me, but I didn't understand what this book is about. I'm a bit slow,
y'know. Is it a book about music? And is it the same Simon Reynolds who wrote
Energy Flash in which he keeps going on and on and on and on and on about drugs
and drugs and hardcore and other bad music and drugs and... :s

The Larry Heard night will take some beating, but with the usual electric atmosphere in place, and regular friendly crowd should make this one close contender. There's more to the legendary Cavern club than the Beatles.

I wouldn't say 'spot on'. He had a view and that view was open for discussion.
In the beginning of the book his remarks on drugs made sense, but were more
prominent then needed. But near the end it became too much. All that talk
about hardcore and whatever came after... it became boring... and made me stop
reading it. There are very good parts in the book and he made sense most of the
time, but it's just too long and too much.

Re: (313) track req - d'n'b techno hybrids

2005-09-21 Thread Lance @ Inaudible

'lo list,
I'm doing this mixed compilation for some friends and I'm looking
for a good techno/electro track that halfway through changes to
drum'n'bass. I have one from the Jacob's Optical Stairway album on
RS, but I'm looking for others. Any recs?

There are a few Jacobs Optical Stairway releases worth checking out.
JOS have quite a bit of detroit relavence as well. A few other JOS's
other guises include 4Hero, Tek9, and the very detroit-esque Nu Era
(check their amazing Beyond Gravity album if you can find it).

Ok back to the JOS info you were after...
* Jacob's Optical Stairway  - s/t cd/2xlp (RS) 1996 (including a
track co-produced by Juan Atkins)
* Jacob's Optical Stairway  - solar feelings cdep/12 (RS) 1996
(including two mixes by Claude Young)
* Jacob's Optical Stairway  - jacob's story cdep/12 (RS) 1997
(including Juan Atkins+Dave Angel mix)

Other tech-d'n'b-jazz tracks i might recommend...
* Innerzone Orchestra - bug in a bassbin rmxs cd, 3x12, 10 (MoWax)
(includes mixes by carl craig, claude young, 4hero [sound familiar],
future/past, and peshay) - the best mix is claude's 31st Century Jazz
Mix on the 10 all released in 1996

* Florence - the vinyard 12 (Eevolute) 1995 (with nice peter ford mix)
* Reload - autoreload vol 2 cdep (Infonet) 1993 (with amazing mixes
by Black Dog and Global Communications)
* Lamb - cottonwool rmxs (Fontana) 1996 (with nice fila brazilia
guy called gerald mixes)
* Sensorama - Zu Gast auf der Welcome Insel cd/2xlp (Ladomat) 1996
(claude mix is the d'n'b-ish track but highlights also include mixes
by Born Under a Rhyming Planet and Move D)

And last but hardly least...
* A Guy Called Gerald: black secret technology (Juice Box) (one of
the great d'n'b tech releases)
* A Guy Called Gerald: essence (Studio K7!) (a few highlights like
'humanity' and 'fever' - good rmxs by black dog, ashley beedle, too)
* A Guy Called Gerald: to all things what they need (Studio K7!) (new
one. nice spacy ambient moods and less vocals)

While on the topic of AGCG, anybody know if the Juice Box represses
of the back catalog ever came out? gerald mentioned on his website
last year that he was planning represses of them all but i have yet
to see them. i've always wanted copies of hot lemonade, 28 gun bad
boy, and all the other early Juice Box 12s i was never able to find.

Also any reviews on Gerald's new Sugoi Recordings label? supposedly
it will be more on the detroit-techno-acid tip. The first release on
the label 'Flo-Ride' was due out this month. Any details or reviwes
out there?

ok, class dismissed. back to work for me...

Not sure if anyone has mentioned Recloose but he has a few tracks that fit
this bill... notably a track Landscaping off the top of my head and a few
others worth looking into.

I just listened to cottonwool from their album 2 days ago and the original
still makes my hair stand on end when the choppy rhythms really get
going. No structure on the surface, yet somehow it all just syncopates in
the abstract... It's an ADHD dream come true!
