He's a great DJ (although he hardly plays out in Chicago) and also performs an excellent live P.A (with MPC 3000, Juno et al). I guess you could describe his music as House... but it really has an overall modern club sound (much like alot of the current Planet E 'sound'), that takes in alot of electronic music's influences (both recent and distant). If you're into Detroit flavoured music... I'd definitely recommend tracking down some of his releases. fwd: UR and NYE
Cornelius @UR asked me to forward this message to the list. Hopefully it will put a few sleeping dogs to rest. Cornelius himself, is having a few probs with the list, so if you can't reach him via the list... try his hotmail address: [EMAIL PROTECTED] peace ~Askew Well, I've been pretty absent (3 million new messages since I last checked), but you know what they say, better late... I'm fascinated by all these folks with inside info who seem to know more about UR's plans than UR. Where to start...? Number one, I was unaware of how far all this miscommunication had spread. If I had known, UR would've responded earlier. Two, the reality is that UR had not made a decision about the extent of its involvement in the event until recently (this afternoon?). But, and this is to help explain some of the confusion, UR *had* made a commitment to participate *in some way*. This was misinterpreted as confirmation of the entire ISF crew. Not the case. I'm going to apologize for any fan confusion on the behalf of UR. As for the lineup from UR...James Pennington was discussed as a live performer along with Agent Chaos. I say discussed because we had not confirmed this with him. As for the other members of UR/ISF/Red Planet, etc...believe it or not, UR has *never* completely issued a list of all its members or affiliates, and even moreso, Red Planet (trust me, 313 gossip aside, there are more Martians than even Mr. Pennington is aware of, I *know* this). Has anyone noticed that some tracks may be listed as Andre Holland, or Mad Mike, or Drexciya, but there are others listed as Underground Resistance? There are reasons. There are members of UR who have been working on tracks, creating hits, who, truthfully, have not really done much publicly. Hell, Andre Holland may NEVER perform live...or he might next time around, we'll see. What I'm saying is, Clandestine has been with UR for a long time, he has spun for UR in the past (under a different name), and, for reasons which are his own, he *WANTS* to be Clandestine. Is a group like UR going to argue with that? I'll also clue you in that one of the musicians going over is another long time UR member who, while unbilled, has produced tracks and will, no question, perform one or two of them. The bottom line on all this is, while there *were* issues with the promoter, simply because you don't readily know the names UR mentions doesn't mean they are folks we picked up off the street for show. Truthfully, folks didn't know who the Interstellar Fugitives were when we went over last time. So. They were, and still are, members of UR. And they represented properly, if I don't say so myself (if you thought our show was f*cked up, please email me privately and tell me why!). Is anyone familiar with Hipnotech? Another UR affiliated label. No producers are listed, only tracks, but I can tell you, it's the same deal. UR members and others have participated without label credits. One guy is...working...with the Roots. But he's managing to do many things at once. Still, if other folks want to have their name out, they may do something on a label like Upstart/Urban Slang, yet another UR affiliate. Mark Flash was doing work with UR for a long time, but his first label credit came on UR's remix for E-Dancer's Bango (released on PIAS in Europe only, I believe). He is no less a member of the UR family because he has never had a titled release on UR proper (truth be told, I think Mike knew him *before* he met up with DJ Rolando). Hell, Agent Chaos had a track out on Metroplex *BEFORE* his UR ep came out. Is that significant? What this goes back to is the music. The music comes first. If this was a scam, we'd be saying so, but again, UR *will* be present, and we *will* give you a great night out. If you're looking for Drexciya, I'm sorry, but they're somewhere underwater doing whatever Drexciyans do. Again, sorry for the confusion. Cornelius PS-Mad Mike Banks is a producer, NOT a DJ. He is also an exceptional MUSICIAN, having played a number of instruments with a number of individuals in a number of styles, but a turntable was never one of them! Other folks might do well to follow his lead... _ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com

'Acid House' describes more of a musical movement, than a specific sound or genre. It was the soundtrack to the 'Summer of Love' in the UK (@ 1988) where techno/house/rave culture broke big time (e's are good, yellow smiley faces, the rave is on etc.) It's kind of an umbrella label that describes alot of music (Chicago producers like Joe Smooth plus artists like Joey Beltram, Guy Called Gerald, Slam, Leftfield, Derrick May...) some of it amazing, and some of it not so amazing. There's quite a few CD comps (Mastercuts have one) that cover the UK 'Acid House' sound. But, if you head over to the home of house, Chicago, it's a slightly different story. Where the 'acid' sound is derived from the signature sound of the Roland TB-303 bassline machine, and the mind bending atmosphere of clubs like the Music Box. Here's some of my fav Chicago acid tracks: Virgo - 'My Space' (Trax 1986) Mr Fingers - 'Washing Machine' (Trax 1986) Phuture - 'Acid Tracks' 'You're Only Friend' (Trax 1987) Joe Smooth - 'Perfect World' (DJ International 1987?) A few months back somebody on the list was asking about Lil Louis (something about booking details?). Anyways... one of my favourite records of the year so far would have to be Kimara Lovelace's 'Misery', which came out a few months back on King Street. The main track is produced and mixed by Lil Louis (club harmony mixes), and it's a killer piece of work. Similar to the Black Magic 'Freedom' 12 on Strictly Rhythm (also with live bass by Gene Perez), but not so straight ahead... and IMHO alot better. Lil Louis back in top form. And... for something a little different. Check the Isolee mix of Turner's 'Been Out' on Ladomat 2000. This mix is more in the vein of Beau Mot Plage than the (also excellent) 'Rest' 2xLP, with driving rhythms and some nice subtle songwriting twists that gradually emerge in the arrangement. You might want to play this one at minus 4 though! Just to finish... white labels of Sound Signature # 10 and 11 have been circulating for a little while now. Both are 2 track 12s. SS010 features 'Take It' (the track that Theo played at the DEMF)... which sounds a little like a recent Recloose track. hmmm :) Hopefully both these 12s should be out in the not too distant future. peace ~Askew now we can all get back to the ongoing yo momma's on smack/not black enough/a toneshifter thread... _ Get more from the Web. Stacey Pullen in Melbourne
I think Stacey Pullen left by far the greater impression in Melbourne a couple of weeks ago among a wider demographic!! He played for six hours in Melbourne at the Innovator party along with Derrick Carter - and he played 'til he was so tired he was kneeling at the decks, and it was sensational. It was an appreciative, sophisticated crowd and the night had a great vibe. People are still talking about it! *snip* Derrick played deep and slipped in a few quirky RB type records - like Mary Mary's Shackles (Praise You), which is a uptempo gospel/RB track and a top 2 hit here, and The Artful Dodger feat Craig David. I believe he played the Mayday mix of Jaguar, too. Derrick Carter played an excellent set, but wasn't quite in the peak over-the-top form that he can be. I think he plays better to a club/party crowd... rather than a sophisti-rave crowd. In the last hour he broke it down with a loose jazz-style track, and then played some hard Chicago funk (like Little Louis' 'Original Video Clash')... which was a highlight! Then Stacey played tech-house through to house and finished with a drum 'n' bass track by Goldie (we think) and Stevie Wonder during his encores. I am not sure if it's common practice elsewhere for DJs to do encores but in the clubs they often do them here due to crowd reception. Stacey received an ovation here - it was the bomb. For most of Stacey's set (first 4 1/2 hrs) he played straight ahead tech-house (Plastic City, The End-style etc.)... but his mixing and personality projection was amazing. He played on 3 decks with a Pioneer DJM 600 and what looked like a Pioneer EFX 500 (the multi-FX realtime box with the jog-wheel), and he was in razor-sharp form... dropping out frequencies, panning, filtering, cutting... dubbing out whole mixes for minutes at a time, and then slamming all the frequencies back in. ALL THIS PLUS... singing along to the tracks, clapping and busting out Kung-Fu moves with Derrick Carter (as Stacey cut the tracks up). He completely blew my mind! And then there was the (3+ !!!) encores... disco tracks, Stevie Wonder's 'All I Do' (i think it was the Roy Davis Jnr remake)... Stacey rocked down the house (and even that's an understatement). cheers ~Askew PS. 313 and Broadcast Media
How does the following post relate to 313? Well it shows that the future (and not too distant past) of Detroit techno belongs on the true community radio shows of the world, as well as the World Wide Web. What did that old 'has-been' say about pocket calculators and tv sets, remote controls and micro-cassettes...? Ms Cyclone wrote: And radio has a lot to do with it, too. Urban music is only just breaking in Australia now due to a latent racism that held it back for years. Universal has tried for years and years to break Mary J Blige but radio will not support her because she is too them too Black- which is a hideous situation. Radio only reluctantly got behind Lauryn Hill - after months of Sony campiagns and then the Grammy coup. I don't really think 'latent racism' is holding back Urban music on commercial radio in Australia... it's more a case of the target marketing of a specific audience, with a specific format/sound. Commercial radio is a very stagnant medium in Australia and it works to a very limited playlist... which is pretty much Classic Rock, M-O-R and a handful of crossover-pop tunes. Sure Hip-Hop, RB and Soul hardly get a look in... but neither does most Alternative Rock, Heavy Metal, Electronic music, Country Music etc.etc.etc. This is why community radio is so important and why its supportbase is building in momentun... Amen to that! because it responds to the community and young people (and young at heart) and ethnic people and working class demograhics and gay audiences, not monied young Anglo-Australian conservatives and suburban sheep who don't know that they are being programmed. I don't know about your demographic categorisations... conservative sheep come in ALL shapes and colours. Re: [313] 313 and Broadcast Media
I think fundamentally Australian mainstream types are scared of anything that is ghetto-centric - that is anything that either glamourises/celebrates the ghetto (ie Puff Daddy) or exposes the hardships/realities of inner-city America (The Roots through to DMX, etc, etc). They say, this is not relevant to us. This thread was started by a comment on how major-labels have screwed-over alot of 'underground' artists. And in my post I wasn't specifically trying to focus upon Urban music... I was making generalisations to the bigger picture (313 included). I don't doubt that racism exists within Australian mainstream music media. In the big picture racism is basically ignorance and fear, and mainstream media is ignorant and afraid of many genres (not just Urban music). Mainstream media doesn't cater to my music needs, so I have very little to do with it. Music is relative. I'd rather read reviews on Forcefield, read articles in Straight No Chaser, listen to interviews on Andrew Duke's Cognition, and listen to Ron Hardy DJ-sets on the Deephouse site. People have always had to try that little bit harder to get exposure to underground music (like Detroit techno), and underground music has always had a pretty steep learning curve. And no matter how underground you think the music you like is... more often than not, there's always a bunch of people out there who like it too (hello 313-list). A genre like Jazz has a huge following thanks to dedicated media outlets and grassroots support... and despite the lack of mainstream media coverage. peace ~Askew _ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com. Much respect to Matthew Herbert, he's an excellent producer and entertaining DJ... but you should look a little closer at his live performance. He played a solo set (clunky Radio Boy style including 'Take me Back') by himself, and an 'Around the House' set with Dani and Phil in Melbourne. During the solo set he was 'playing' objects (plastic bags, Coke cans etc.) into the microphnes (and playing with the FX on the mics), but the actual tracks were running off DAT. During the 'Around the House' set, there was live vocals by Dani, and live keys by Matthew and Phil... but the rest of the tracks were playing stright from DAT. I have yet to read a report of the show (especially interested in Loomit's involvement. Kinda behind on the report. Was cool. The graff was on the wall outside the club - very original idea. Loomit did a l o n g piece... with a mural/airbrush feel (although he only used cans). Pretty cool. There was a hip-hop room too, rare groove room, different music styles. So it all tied in. short review of KDJ 026
KDJ 026 Andres 'untitled' (2x12) Non-descript label (unlike previous Andres or KDJ releases) with no song titles, in plain white sleeve. Overall, a very satisfying release... with improved production and song writing, following on from the three previous 12s on KDJ. SIDE A 1. Sweet cut-up, with a house rhythm... featuring pitched-up male vocals that sound like a cross between falsetto Smokey Robinson and a chipmunk. :) 2. Another 4-on-the-floor cut-up, with nice flute samples and female vocal samples. SIDE B 1. A cut-up of 'Friday Night' by Debbie Welch and Norma Jean Bell (out on Pandamonium last year). Hip Hop tempo, with hard hitting kicks. 2. Smooth house track, with nice piano samples, and chord progression similar to '313 Love' (off KDJ 20). SIDE C 1. Stepping away from previous KDJ releases this is an up-tempo breakbeat track ('Reality'-style) with a Latin flavour. Featuring a live-sounding bongo intro. Absolutely killer! 2. Classic KDJ house-style, with a deep piano riff and saxophone samples. SIDE D 1. Another Latin-flavour breakbeat track with Spanish vocal and guitar samples. 2. Latin percussion and guitar samples feature on this uptempo breakbeat track. The pitched-up vocal sample sounds like a cross between Motown and Ofra Haza (of 'Paid in Full' fame). A highly recommended release (probably my fav. double pack for the year), and a good jumping-on point for folks unfamiliar with the KDJ label. You might want to think about playing Sides A D at -8% though... then again maybe you might not. I'm betting that Andres' sampler doesn't have a 'time stretch' function. :) cheers ~Askew **warning: Do not borrow your partners' credit card/money to buy this record... they will claim it for themselves! I'd have to agree with Andy here. Some early techno records might have raw production, mixing and muddy pressings, but these records are also full of the kind of raw expression (soul) that's so hard to find in 'modern' techno. and Re: Juan Atkins IMHO Juan's early productions have some the sweetest arrangements, programming and song-writing found in any genre of dance music. The 'No UFO's/Future' 12 is a textbook for techno/electro. Sure... in some of his production work the edits and mixing are a little loose, but he was doing it all live. Re: [313] What Is Up With 313?
I think some folks are taking the 'three degrees of separation' a little far. If you're bored with 313-techno, don't have anything to say, or maybe don't really know what 313-techno is... maybe you should bite your tongue and take it elsewhere. As for more on-topic threads... How about Sherard Ingram getting some long-overdue play at the DEMF. His 1998 LP 'The Collapse of Modern Culture' has proved to be a real 'sleeper'. It received a piece of the spotlight when it was initially released (thanks to the Mo Wax link and the guest artists), but it seems to have faded all too quickly into the background. There's so much expression and soul in this release that it almost overwhelms you on the first few listens... but give it a few months and your ears really start to open up. IMHO 'Peacemakers' is still one of the stand-outs of 1998. Or... what about UR 043, 'Condition Red' by Dark Avenger (aka Chaos/Marc Floyd)... another release which hasn't drawn alot of attention. Following on from the bomb that was 'Afrogermanic', Marc Floyd serves up the real-deal yet again. Personally, I really like electro... but there are so few artists at the moment who are really pushing the boundaries, so many sound-a-like releases, so many artists treading water and counting the pay checks. Tracks like 'Cosmic Osmosis' and 'The Safety is Off' cut the shit, and 'Wobbler' gets noisy and freaked out (in true UR style). And... how about the 'New Phonies' picture disk by Adult on Clone. Following on from the ground work laid by Le Car... Adult have been pushing the electro/synth-pop boundaries for a few years. While there have been a number of Adult-highlights, there's also been a process of development... especially with the treatment of Nicola's vocals and the overall production. 'New Phonies' finds everything clicking nicely into place... apart from the slick artwork (which has been pressed on the wrong sides of the disk). :) Finally... check 'Summertime is Here' by Theo Parrish. I know this release has been out a fair few months, and also very hard to get, but the one-sided one-track 12 is breathtaking. Vocals, live trumpet, and live sax push Theo's production to new levels. And while everyone's worrying about 'down beat', 'deep house' and all the rest... you know that the new double-pack is gonna say shut the f*ck up and listen to the music. Of course some lucky list-members have already had a sneak preview... where are the reviews? Like TP said (when talking about 313-house) a few months ago... there are a handful of Detroit artists who get their props (sometimes over-and-over again), but there is also a 'living and breathing' local scene who deserve their fair-share of exposure. ~Askew And as a final word... I'd like to offer some overdue respect to Alan Oldham. In the past some parts of this list have been quick to kiss his ass, but when the chips were down and Alan (a fellow list member) needed a little support... what happened? Out came the soapboxes and knives. What kind of reflection was this on the list? Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com

Freddie has made some great analog-style electro... check the following releases: Freddie Fresh/Invisible Man - 'Fresh is the Word' (Sockett UK 001) Supergroupies (w.3rd Electric) - 'Supergroupies' (Sockett UK 002) Invisible Man - 'Cross Bronx Expressway' (Sockett US 001) Freddie Fresh - 'Lectro Outtakes' (Electrecord 500) He has always had a sense of humour (and DJing out of Minnesota since the mid-80's... you'd need one), and his 1997 LP 'Accidently Classic' on Harthouse is a fine mixture of hip-hop, electro, latin, funk, house and techno. Sure... his current output might not be too aesthetically pleasing... but you still have to give respect where its due. Recently his house burnt down and he divorced his wife... so maybe he has some bills to pay. peace ~Askew __ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com

Cyclone wrote: Common Factor is confirmed at The Lounge (Melb) sometime this Feb. Look in the street press for more details. The line-up is Common Factor, Voiteck, Boogs Spacey Space... and I assume it will go down on a Saturday night (Boogs' weekly residency). There's a good chance he'll be playing live, he's bringing an MPC 3000, and has asked for quite a sizeable gear-rider... peace ~Askew __ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com

Anyone spoken to him, was he happy with the tour? Hopefully he'll come back here in the near future. Voiteck and Boogs got back from their US tour/holiday quite a few months ago. By all accounts they had a great time, hanging out in San Fran. staying at DJ Rush's place in Chicago, visiting Canada... and of course spending some time in the Detroit area. I've heard all the stories... both of them playing with Rolando (and the party getting busted), night-time radio in Detroit, hanging out with BMG (and heaps of other cool people), and of course all the records they bought (damn Voiteck bought back heaps of sealed Alice Coltrane records)! Boogs is blowing things up in Melbourne at the moment... if any of you guys are thinking about visitng make sure you check out his on/off residency at Centiphugal on Friday nights, and his own night at the Lounge on Saturdays. peace ~Askew __ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com
(313) KDJ new cut
Kool DJ Duke wrote: KDJ has a limited 12 on Mike Grant's Detroit-based Moods and Grooves imprint. There are two untitled tracks. You've described the first one, the second one is a disco cut-up of a Ten City track. Just before the new year I saw a new 1-sided KDJ 12 by Moodymann titled 'Thief Stole My Sadness' at Hedonzim records. I haven't seen or heard of this record since. Does any have info. on this release? cheers ~Askew __ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com

Greg wrote: Markus Nikolai 'Bushes (Freaks Turning Yellow Speakeasy)' [Perlon] Is this the same mix as is on the Farina san fran sessions release? Also, can anyone tell me if this bushes track is on the LP release? I've tried to search for it and nothing lists the tracks on the LP release. I've heard one mix of this song onperlin, and frankly I don't like it, but the mix on the farina CD is pretty smooth. I'm not familiar with the Farina mix-CD, and I don't have the Markus Nikolai LP... but I do know of four other versions of the 'Bushes' track. The first house mix of the track came out on the 'Superlongevity' 2LP various artists comp. (Perlon 10). This version is simply entitled 'Bushes' and is a nice Herbert/Cologne-styled house track, built around guitar and vocal loops. Markus Nikolai's 'Passion' 12 (Perlon 12) has three more mixes of the track. 'Bushes (Zero Volt)' is a short acoustic pop-song (presumably where all the samples/vocals have been taken for the house mixes). 'Bushes (Freaks Turning Yellow Speakeasy)' is a house remix by Justin Harris and Luke Solomon... which lays most of the original vocals over a new catchy arrangement. 'Bushes (Freaks in Outer Space Dub)' is an instrumental version of the first Harris/Solomon mix... with a slightly different arrangement. hope this helps! ~Askew __ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com

Cyclone wrote: Luke Slater's new album Wireless is just the shit... The song that is doing heads in with Melbourne's DJs is All Exhale, the first single. Much respect to Luke Slater as a producer... especially for older tracks like 'Gruve' (P.A.S) and 'Doup' (7th Plain)... but I think the new single is a pretty naff' attempt at electro (check the cheesy breakdancer with his boom box in the video). Goes well with the electro breakdown in Puff Daddy's 'PE 2000' and the new single by Jordan Knight (ex- New Kids on the Block). :) peace ~Askew BTW: respect to Cyclone for representing Detroit (specifically Stacey Pullen) in Melbourne's major tabloid newspaper... the Herald Sun. __ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com
(313) Bolz Bolz
Christopher wrote: 1. I've got a bolz bolz on ersatz audio (that's 313 right?) with an electro track featuring some subbed out bass and a spooky female spoken german vocal over the top that I really dig, but I've never encountered any similar bolz bolz tracks. Are they out there? If not anybody have suggestions in that vein. Andreas Bolz a.k.a Bolz Bolz, Funktaxi half of Third Electric (w. Gregor Luttermann/Rootpowder). BolzBolz and Rootpowder run Electrocord (formally Electrecord) out of Cologne in Germany, and more recently Bolz Bolz has set up his own label... 'World Electric'. IMHO... Bolz Bolz is an underrated electro producer who's making some really interesting records at the moment. For examples of his most recent electro output, check the following: Bolz Bolz 'Plus Bonus Track' 12 (World Electric 001) featuring two new mixes, by Plasma Co. (Ersatz Audio) and Bolz Bolz, of the previously released 'Musik'. Bolz Bolz 'The Ultimate' 12 (World Electric 002) Bolz Bolz 'Deluxe EP' 12 (World Electric 003) Funktaxi 'Mild' 12 (Electrocord 1500) very impressive release, with some of the best s l o w e r electro tracks released this year, keep an eye out for the fuller length CD release. peace ~Askew __ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com

yeah...but it really kills the mood when you gotta keep getting up and flip the records ;p That's why you gotta get into threesomes... Then you got an extra pair of hands to flip Marvin's 'Let's Get it On'...
