Hey, I didn't want to interfere in all this, but in Fred's defense, he never insulted Tom's kid. He only attacked Tom about his mental state (and I happen to agree with him), being in such a bad shape he would run the risk of his kid getting taken away from him by the authorities or something along those lines. I agree that's harsh, but Tom's not exactly in need of pity here and if anything is not insulting to Tom's kid, but Tom himself. On 27-aug-2006, at 21:56PM, J.T. wrote: Re: my approach to Tom. This was something I had been looking forward to for a while. Once things got underway, Theo took control. He started off by playing Stevie Wonder's 'As' and talking about how Lil' Louis played the track at a club in Chicago when Theo was 15 or 16 and how it blew his mind because he was used to just thinking of that track as something he sang with his mom. Theo was full of stories from his days in Chicago and Detroit and every track he would play seemed to put it in a new light for me. I think the lecture went on for over 3 hours. Theo was opening up about everything, from talking about going to college for art, to DJing and production work. It was definitely something special to hear Theo today. etc... seek jurren baars wrote: most of you will probably have allready spotted this, but there is now a video up on http://www.redbullmusicacademy.com of theo parrish's lecture during this year's red bull music academy. it is supposed to be an interesting lecture (can't comment myself, as i only get to see the video, somehow audio doesn't work...) so enjoy. jurren

Re: (313) But can they sing?
Oddly, I have good associations built up around house or techno 12's with off-key vocals. Y'know, like an old 12 on DJ International or Eightball. I can't tell you how many times I've heard a vocal trainwrecks, as a dj beatmatches flawlessly while the vocals roar out of tune over each other. There's something really awful about it, but the imperfection sort of puts the humanity back in a dj set. It's a sort of sonic phenomena that you wouldn't ordinarily hear (hopefully) where people were singing two distinct songs, wildly out of tune. Im fine with vocals in techno (while Im not crazy about Atkin's The Flow, his single Ill Be There is an outstanding cut). Doesnt make a difference to me. Best sets I've ever heard involved a good mix between house techno 12s, with an attentive dj who just knew what to play. And a good house set with a live singer just brings back disco/gospel/soul in a good way. Peter --- Tim Moore [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: On Nov 3, 2005, at 3:53 PM, Ian Malbon wrote: Clearly there has been a move by many producers to incorporate more vocals in techno and related genres (Diva-house has always been an exception). I remember thinking this was going to become a trend when Juan dropped The Flow. Some, like Recloose, employ guest vocals, and others, like Jeremy Ellis, handle the task themselves. First, what's your general reaction to vocal tracks? And does it bother you when some of these vocalists can't quite cut it? I think that vocal tracks, used sparingly, can really enhance a set or an album, but it is easy to overdo it. Bad vocals can be pretty bad... or not, just as in rock music. It's not as much a matter of whether the vocals are on key as whether the style fits the rest of the music and the rest of the set. To choose some examples, I think Matthew Dear pulls it off really well, because his delivery sounds very techno to me. On the other hand, when I saw Safety Scissors live, I have to say his vocals were a low point. Maybe it's the difference between using live, dry (and not especially strong) vocals vs. studio-manipulated ones. But then to further contradict myself, I thought the Nitzer Ebb track on the first Dex Efx 909 mix ruined the flow of the mix, even though I have no problems with the track on its own. Overall, I like the move towards more vocals... I don't mind the blurring of the boundary between techno and pop music at all. But when DJing, you have to put each track into the context of the set as a whole (as always) and make sure you're neither playing too much of one style, nor constantly jarring people with tracks that are totally out of place. -- Tim Moore __ Yahoo! Just received this in the mail: http://www.geminidj.com/news_ikey.html Considering the brand, I don't expect too much of this. You still need an additional storage device (it should be possible to use an iPod for this) and if you do want to convert to mp3, the highest bitrate is only 256 Kbps. But if you want to record to wav and you already have an iPod or similar device, this could work. You still couldn't play back the wav directly on the iPod, but that's just a matter of connecting it to your computer and importing it through iTunes. In the mail I received it had a suggested retail price of approx 200 euros which I think is way too expensive for a device like this. Don't have a clue about US prices though. I'd prefer not to record to MP3 format or mini disk, and want to avoid the hassle of tearing down the computer to move it to my 'DJ room' since I don't have a laptop. Any Help? Chris

A video has surfaced depicting officers dressed in full military fatigues raiding the main stage of the event. Local news stations side with police in initial reports. Attendees of the outdoor electronic music event dubbed Versus II taking place the evening of Saturday, August 20th in the Diamond Fork area of Spanish Fork Canyon in Utah County arrived at the event with confidence that the concert organizers had obtained the proper permits and legal clearance to hold the event. Personal accounts available at the local electronic community websiteutrave.org paint a scene of police brutality and mayhem, many accounts bearing eyewitness to the forceful arrest of young girls. Reports state that at approximately 11:30pm upwards of 90 officers, many wearing full camouflage gear, gathered from Sherrif and SWAT departments in surrounding areas stormed the previously peaceful gathering dedicated to music and dance. At least 1 helicopter was dispatched, along with large tranport vehicles designated for both officers and detainees. Numerous statements from attendees indicate excessive force being exerted by many officers. Inuries including mild to severe bruises and cuts have been reported by party goers as young as age 17. The Utah County Sherrif's Office has expressed a long term vendetta against what they call Rave parties. Statements from the Sherrif's office as well as eyewitness accounts make it clear that this was a premeditated attack on the promoters and community supporting these events. While the Sherrif's office has stated that many drugs and pieces of paraphernalia were obtained, they fail to note how many of the 60+ citations were for drug violations. Many accounts indicate the majority of citations and arrests were for resisting arrest. The Sherrif's office states that the party was raided on the grounds of failure to obtain a mass gathering permit for an event hosting more than 250 attendees. Reports vary as to the number in attendance, estimation ranging from 250 to 1,400. Controversy exists as to whether a mass gathering permit was actually obtained, however, a Health Department permit was obtained, and hired security and emergency medical service personnel were on site. Many eyewitness accounts indicate that officers singled out party goers attempting to document the events on camcorders, cameras and camera phones. Victims have claimed that officers knocked cameras out of the hands of the owner, even confiscating some. Luckily, one video has surfaced, and is quickly spreading across the internet, as well as being featured by at least one local news station. The video clearly displays a large number of officers dressed in full camouflage fatigues, some brandishing rifles. In the higher quality version of the video, which includes sound, it is apparent that the use of a taser was employed. While the video is somewhat unclear at times, the viewer can plainly see an officer atop a young girl fully subdued on the ground on her stomach; he swings on her at least twice, as more officers rush forward to manhandle the girl. It is clear that many others were subdued using similar levels of force. Initial reports from local news stations side with the Sherrif's Office, one anchor calling the event a drug party without batting an eye. Reports tend to focus on the drugs and paraphernalia acquired by police, rather than the obvious violation of civil liberties reported by those in attendance and depicted by the amateur video, which has been provided to all major local news agencies. Surprisingly, the local Fox News affiliate Fox 13 seemed to give the most unbiased report, stating that many attendees had reported excessive force, as well as showing the official media response from the Utah County Sherrif's Office. Clips of the previously mentioned video were also shown. Other news agencies have gone along with the Sherrif's Office in painting a picture of drugs, guns, and sexual assault running rampant at electronic music events in general, and especially this one. KUTV Channel 2 News blatantly inferred that the hired security was merely in place to prevent the sale of drugs by anyone but the event organizers. All major reports restate the claim made by the Sherrif's department that a

Well, I couldn't say really. I have 2 records by them. Gone and Love is OK and both only contain remixes by minimal house/techno guys. (Villalobos, Neuman, etc.) There's some bonus tracks on there as well, but those are quite experimental and I don't know if they're representative. In general I would say they sound very very German. Re: (313) Planet-E Bootlegs?
Well bootlegging is one thing, but what HTFR is doing isn't bootlegging, it's counterfeiting. It's no different from what's happening to Rolex watches and Louis Vuitton bags. Only where Asians are producing cheap, low quality knockoffs because of otherwise very expensive originals, HTFR are producing very expensive low quality knockoffs because of otherwise unavailable originals. For Rolex and LV I can understand it's difficult to find the culprits. But for Carl, Derrick and all the others who have been ripped off by these crooks, it should be quite a lot easier. They know exactly who they are And it's not that they're so p*ss poor they can't afford a lawyer are they? Especially when it's such a clear case theyre going to win. After reaching a peak in 1999 with 1.5 million ravers grooving through the streets of the German capital, the event gradually ran out of steam and its management said it was unable to find enough sponsors to fund the July event. Sabine Bremermann of the Love Parade Ltd said plans for the street party were now being revamped with the aim of winning fresh backing to stage it in the summer of 2006. We will do everything we can, in cooperation with the city-state of Berlin, industry and the media, to find a way to make a comeback the year of the World Cup in Germany, she said. Germany is hosting the World Cup from June 9 to July 9 next year. South Korean electronics giant Samsung recently cancelled as a sponsor and the Berlin daily Tagesspiegel reported that Germany's T-Mobile had also pulled out. The Love Parade blamed Berlin's ailing economy for the sponsors' flight but officials from the city-state government said the organizers had failed to change with the times. After starting small in West Berlin in 1989 the summer before the Berlin Wall fell, the party grew with the craze in electronic music and helped make Berlin the techno capital of the world. Spin-offs were launched in Switzerland, Israel, Mexico and the United States but Berlin remained the mecca for the world's ravers. While the organizers used to leave Berlin to pick up the costs of the parade by claiming the event was a political demonstration, a court ruled in 2001 that it was a commercial venture and liable for the expenses. The cancellation comes just days after the legendary dance club Tresor shut its doors after 13 years as a fixture of Berlin nightlife. I wouldn't read too much in what he is saying there. Sounds like he was in a pretty depressive mood when doing that interview. He also states that Juan Atkins should burn in hell for naming the genre Techno :-) I particularly like the bit when he is talking about the new music coming out as a big pile of crap and that the pile of crap was growing to be a vulcano of crap and that the vulcano just started erupting... LOL Mind you, this is well before stadium trance and progressive! Then either people can search for the file name or find your name on slsk and grab the file that way For bittorrent, you can use something like Azureus (http://azureus.sf.net) to create a new torrent, then publish the torrent file up on a bit torrent tracker site. I have a tracker setup on my server that can be used for this purpose. The good part of bit torrent is that as long as someone sticks around to seed the file, you don't necessarily have to be the only one sharing it out the whole time. I need to go away and do my homework ' I have slsk on my mac . but not the bit torrent .. basically have stopped using them cause it's boredom and awfully more'ish / also is it true that slsk has stopped giving out usernames ! Not sure. i haven't used slsk for a while.

Re: (313) Galaxy 2 Galaxy Los Hermanos live (report)
I agree about the performance. It was like nothing I have ever witnessed before. What an amazing vibe! Gerard Mitchell sure knows how to pump up a crowd! And to play the keyboard for that matter, wow! Although I didn't quite understand everything what Mad Mike was saying when he took the mic at the end. About people who couldn't stay in Detroit any longer or something?? And a lot of things were hard right now? And who the [EMAIL PROTECTED] was that DJ before and after the performance? What were they thinking booking this guy? It couldn't have been further from the vibe that UR were spreading. A dreadful example of anti-funk as I've ever heard. He totally ruined the evening for me. Also, wasn't there supposed to be another room, where Fabrice Lig would be playing? I was desperately looking for it when this crap DJ was torturing me, but in vain. I don't think it lives up to what I've heard but it still is amazing albulm. The first track really sucks me in especially with the synthy opening. I think Ping Pong and Headcase are very good also. When listening to the albulm I think its important to keep in mind that it is a concept albulm, bringing you closer into the mind of Mr Hawtin. I think the vocals are a very important part of the albulm which relates directly to the concept behind it all. I'm constantly amazed on how dark the albulm feels. I will agree with Dennis and say that it is a must buy when it comes out in October. -K - Original Message - From: Dennis Donohue [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: 313@hyperreal.org Sent: Tuesday, August 05, 2003 1:17 PM Subject: (313) Plastikman - Closer Please forgive me if this has already been discussed, as I haven't yet seen anything about it. After giving Closer a few listens, I have to say that I'm very impressed at not only the musical quality but the way in which Plastikman was able to keep that traditional Plastikman sound, yet meld it into a new album that isn't walking on exactly the same ground that he's walked before. The whole album plays out like an album should, a full context of itself, with each song becoming a part of a greater whole, which is very enjoyable as a listener. All of the compositions include somewhat basic production methods, but used in a sort of finesse that really uses each part to its potential, instead of relying on tons of layers to tune out things that don't quite work. The very industrial-inspired vocal work is pretty non-descript and not over-the-top or cheesy, as one would suspect simply given the description. The heavy use of delay and reverb gives every production a lot of space and feel, ala Consumed, but the songs all have more of driving presence akin to the direction of earlier albums (sheet one, musik). This album is a marvel in keeping pace with expectation without dissapointing the faithful followers of a specific sound, while adding some new elements. Definitely Plastikman, but at the same time, definitely new. Buy on site. -dmd

I was excited thinking i was playing a festival with kraftwerk probably still worth seeing, and I mean the above as no slight to Mr Bartos. - Original Message - From: Oliver Ruehl [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: Jim Bishop [EMAIL PROTECTED]; 313@hyperreal.org Sent: Saturday, July 12, 2003 3:22 PM Subject: Re: (313) KRAFTWERK - September 20, San Francisco hi there. it's not kraftwerk performing there. it's just the ex-member karl bartos trying to make money by playing old kraftwerk tunes and some poor songs of his own. i think its really a shame that the organizer of this show claims that kraftwerk is performing there: the line up reads: Kraftwerk Live! featuring Karl Bartos it's just karl bartos playing kraftwerk songs...and even this not in good versions... best wishes, oliver - Original Message - From: Jim Bishop [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: 313@hyperreal.org Sent: Saturday, July 12, 2003 9:11 PM Subject: (313) KRAFTWERK - September 20, San Francisco Oh yeah.. http://www.coolworld.com/cyberfest2003/index.html

Joe louis been going around for years... In my opinion his original stuff was much better then the stuff on relief that wasn't even him.. It was a guy called jamie read who he got most of his relief material from... I got his 4 original target releases on my site www.acid-house.net you can heve a listen to the more acidic sounding tracks... He also did 'the love of my own; back in 86 with larry heard which is damn fine aswell p Hello, I've had this record for years now, and it occurred to me to ask if anyone here had it, or had heard it? It's an amazing Detroit-style techno record, but it's on this London label, and it seems to be from Joe Louis from Chicago (it says on the label ''Licensed from Target Records''). I just thought he was more well-known for his Relief releases, or music in that style - does anyone know if he's done stuff that's as good as this EP? Or in the same kind of style? Thanks, Andrew

I'm pretty sure that 'kool kat' was the pre curser for 'network' records... I know it sounds bad but there was an album called 'acid trance' on blue chip from 88 which is pretty damn fine aswell... You can hear how it morphed into nexus 21 from the lp Matthew: what was the deal with Blue Chip, anyway? i'm fairly sure i read somewhere that Blue Chip was the precursor to Network and/or somehow involved Neil Rushton. there was also a Blue Chip Studios, in Stafford (or Stoke), where Altern8 produced a chunk of their tracks and where iirc Laurent Garnier produced his remix of The Reese Project I Believe. Yeah I got that it was silver I think...'overload' Move my body was my favorite.. It had that 'log' noise in it which I loved... I got the nexus 21 stuff but don't remember an lp on network there was only the remixes of sti life iirc p Bizarre inc were originally dean meredith and Mark Archer and Gareth Hunting Personality conflicts between Meredith and Archer led to that group fizzling out, with Archer going on to form the successful Altern 8 Who of course was also one half of Nexus 21 along with Chris Peat, one of the purest Detroit Techno outfits outside of Detroit in the late eighties/early nineties. Who remembers Still Life(keeps Moving) or thier Progressive Logic EP? They also released an LP on Network that I've never been able to track down. In fact now that I think about it I seem to remember seeing Anthony Shakir creditied on my copy of Progressive Logic. Who would have thought they would end up wearing boiler suits and face masks with big 8s on thier chest? Although does anyone remeber the very first Altern 8 ep on Network?? It had 8 tracks with names like 'techno city' and was really good, deep minimal bleepy UK techno.
