Perth community radio station RTRFM broadcasts a lot of underground dance music. They stream it as well, point your browser to http://www.rtrfm.com.au and check it out. The shows (+8 GMT): * Auditory Spiral: Friday nights, 11pm to 1am Saturday. Deep techno, electro, heavily detroit influenced. The host (Seamus) has been a listmember at more than one point. * Looney Choons: Saturday Morning, 1am to 6am. Techno, electro. I play on this show now and then as one of the regular guests. These are the prime techno shows. There are lots of other shows: * Full Frequency: Every weekday (mon to fri) from 3pm to 5pm. Monday is house music, Tuesday is hiphop, Wednesday is different flavoured House/NuJazz, Thursday is house and hiphop, and friday is miscellaneous. * Saturday Night Underground: Sat. Night from 9pm to 12pm. Going for about 8 years now, run by Ben Stinga. Highly regarded, very experimental nowadays. If you like reggae/dancehall/etc, tune in three hours before that for Jamdown Version, a show which is also highly regarded around the world. The guy who presents the reggae show (General Justice) has been in the biz for a very long time. * Ambient Zone: Sunday night from 11pm to 1am. All sorts of mellow music. So you can see that there's a lot of good radio support here. I think radio is really important for helping good music be heard, and getting people interested in new music. RTRFM services many different styles of music and does a great job at it. -Dave --- David Gillies <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > Yeah. What about tracks that aren't at 130bpm? They must ruin your mix too huh? And tracks that don't have four solid kicks must be fucked too. Impossible to mix! What are these 'artists' thinking? Sheesh, give me a break. There's nothing difficult about mixing tracks with fade-ins. Personally I find most Mills' records the easiest to mix. Try going to some of those glitchy German (Villalobos, Isolee) or West Coast (Twerk, Safety Scissors) guys and mixing those, when you come back to techno things suddenly seem a -lot- easier. -Dave __ Do You Yahoo!? [313] Boards of Canada
Well, I picked this up last friday. My thoughts? It's worth buying, if you have liked any BoC (not Bunch of C*nts!) before, or if you like strange and exciting music. The whole album is very strange, and very beautiful, and not totally grounded in reality. It's a bit like being asleep, or under the influence of lsd, or being underwater. Maybe all of the above. Anyway, I like it. There are longer songs, which are more like songs, with slow triphop style beats, eerie strings, and snippets of samples and stuff. In between are short (1-2 minutes) interludes of pure strangeness, weird noises, ominous pads which you could compare to Atlantis or something. It's just that if you listened to it in the store, and passed up on it because it didn't grab you, you may be missing out on this year's weird, eccentric, intensely beautiful albums. If you do buy it, get it on vinyl so you can appreciate the massive triple-gatefold with eye-twisting graphics. -Dave __ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! > > listening to chris's emotional distortion LP this morning, > wondering what has he been up to, and deep4life, have there been any > exceptional releases i should look out for? Yeah, a couple. :) Actually all of the deep4life's have been really good, I think that they're up to number 10 or so now. There have been EPs and mini-LPs from Chris Gray, Ricardo Dias, Sweet Abraham, Darand Land and a couple of others. All are very good, most are quite original. The best chris gray release IMO would have to be the moonchildren EP, it's one of the first few and it is in the same league as 'emotional distortion'. There has also been a CD compilation called 'the deeper side of the internet', which featured songs from a lot of obscure artists known to chris through the internet. Very nice. > also brett dancer, was really interesting to read about his hookup > are there other amazing songs like cosmic vibes in his back catalog? Yep - check out Trackmode records. That's Brett's label, as you know the vinyl of 'emotional distortion' was released on Trackmode a while back. Some essential Brett Dancer would have to be the Melodic Communications EP (I think that's what it's called). It's hot. -Dave __ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! I dunno, I found all these bios very interesting. Almost like putting names to faces but more informative. I for one was stunned that diana p. is only 24 - she has a sharper tongue than oscar wilde. And I was pleased to see that phred is a renewable energy enthusiast - I hope there are more. I'm still waiting for bios from Kent, Otto and the other list gurus. Anyway: Name: Dave Clark Age: 24 Living: Perth, Western Australia (geographically opposite 313) Occupation: Software engineer for ERG. If you catch the bus or train in Toronto, SanFran, most of the UK, rome, berlin, singapore, and heaps of other cities you would have seen a ticket machine built by ERG. Not that exciting, really. :) Production and DJ: Yes, still working on it. Music tastes: all over and every which way. Favourite 313 would have to be Detroit Escalator Company. Played culture host for Perth to a few 313ers, including the infamous Otto (TechnoTourist) and Alistair Lyon from Glasgow (GMT). I think they preferred the excellent Asian restaurants we have here to the music selection. I occasionally get mistaken for Dave Clarke from the UK, which has resulted in offers of touring, remixes, and all sorts of malarkey. Re: [313] agents of change
WORD! When Isolee came to town a few weeks ago, he came on to almost no audience reaction at all and everyone around me was yammering away at the top of their voices. I felt like shouting at the crowd "Everyone, please shut up!" so I could actually hear what was happening (it was an amazing live set). Then someone had the temerity to stand IN FRONT of isolee on the stage and have a conversation with his girlfriend, right in the middle of the live set. Luckily I calmed down enough to just ask him politely to please step aside (not what I originally had in mind). I guess it's a bit rich to expect everyone to be quiet at a club, I mean everyone has the right to conversation, but sometimes it really detracts from the moment when you can hear music AND a bazillion conversations. -Dave ps To those who think I am being snobbish or whatever, just think of this: These people have flown thousands of kilometers (probably) and gone to a lot of effort to put on a show. The promoters have forked out a fair bit to get it all together. Each person there has paid X dollars, presumably for some fun and hopefully (but not necessarily) because they want to see what these guys have to offer. --- Mxyzptlk <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > perspective. Just a question, which Every Dog... are you talking about? I don't recall any 12". Luomo, Soul Center, Hakan Lidbo etc are mostly soulful stripped back house, whereas your Clicks n cuts, farben, peter f speiB, etc is much more experimental glitchy stuff. Re: [313] fanboy track ID
That's arguable. Voiteck or TD5 is an excellent techno producer - he played in Detroit at one stage. From what I heard it was rockin. Also Tim Jackiw is pretty sweet. I haven't heard any Souther Outpost yet but I'm sure it's good. And there are plenty of unknowns. Not to dismiss HMC - he's got some good stuff. I caught a DJ set from him last year when he toured with Voiteck - it was pretty good (pretty banging too). While we're on the topic, didn't Claude Young live in Adelaide for some years? When he played here last he had a reunion of sorts mid-set with (Aussie) Groove Terminator. -Dave --- Toby Frith <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > DJ HMC is Australia's finest export when it comes to House/Techno. Dear List, Don't be so quick to slam someone for asking a question. It leads to people not asking questions, which leads to a 313 mailing list with 5 messages a day, 4 of which concern M*by and 1 from spam meisters about Juan. Anyway I thought it was a good question. I think that with a careful touch, you could blend our music well and maybe provide some real emotion to offset the blandness of hands-in-the-air trance. My first track would be the original Knights of the Jaguar. Then I would check out: -Red Planet (Stardancer, Ultra Violet Images, Sex in Zero Gravity, etc etc etc) -Derrick -Stacey Maybe drop 'Good Life' at the appropriate moment and watch the crowd go off. As previously stated, this is definitely Kevin Yost. I picked it up on the compilation "One Starry Night" on Distance records. Damn, I second this. Excellent gig, no glowsticks, whistles, or attitude. This was one of those events that make it all worthwhile. Plus he seems like a really down to earth guy which is good. Excellent supporting dj's too, not usually the case for a lot of internationals. I'm glad he didn't play the big gig the next day with laurent, josh wink, ritchie, plus some trance guys and a whole lotta other stuff. Thinking of Detroit
Hi, I've just been bitten by the travelling bug (it actually happened when I was reading the freep's coverage of the demf) and am interested in coming to detroit around the time of next year's demf (assuming it will happen again). I know this q. has been asked before, but is there any info. regarding the status of next year? I may end up coming anyway, but to know that it's on would definitely be a kick in the pants(to get going). Also, any IT oriented people on the list in that area? I might consider an extended stay with work (assuming getting a working visa is possible). Thanks heaps for any help, I really would appreciate it. Underground commitee articles
I read those articles posted by Javier yesterday, the one by Cyclone on Women in dance, and am just reading the James Pennington one. I really liked Cyclone's article, but am I the only one who found it really really hard to read? I just about burst some eyeballs trying to make out the letters. :) The orange background, the 7-point font... I must be going blind. Once again though, great article. I thought Cyclone really covered a lot of ground and presented her thoughts clearly. I want to read it again, is there any chance I could get it in another format? And does anyone else have this problem? Thanks, Dave __ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! Shopping - Thousands of Stores. Millions of Products. http://shopping.yahoo.com/

Neither Mills nor Jaguar
Picked up the Detroit Escalator Co.'s Peacefrog album this week. I was already sympathetic to it due to the excellent appearance on the transmat time:space compilation, but after putting the needle on side A of the album and letting it spin for all of 15 seconds I was hooked. Great stuff, really deep soulful mellow stuff. Also picked up some funky electro from 'Mr Velcro Fastener' - you can't listen to serious music all the time and these crazy electro beats and some guy talking about DSP and UMB had me laughing. Anyway, none of the tracks from every dog has it's day are on from the 21st. Oh no, wait, the last track (all 30 seconds of it) from every dog has it's day (not listed) which is also from the humana ep (those lush ambienty chords) is used to kick off the third track on from the 21st. I don't have track listing for from the 21st, due to the fact that I couldn't buy it ANYWHERE, but I've got them both anyway. Every dog has it's day is almost all mellow pleasurable music - from the 21st has a combination of styles such as the mellow lush style, through to the angular momentum powerful tracks. There are also beatless rhythmless ambient tracks throughout. Also - if you are computer sound enabled - the plonging sound that the axis site makes when you click on the axis symbol in the bottom left corner is a 3 minute long track (number 10) on from the 21st. Great stuff!!! If anyone from axis is reading this - I apologise for my piracy but would like to point out that if I could buy 'from the 21st' I would. BTW - just finished the new metropolis soundtrack. Very interesting. You can almost tell it's mills, but it doesn't sound like other mills. Does that make sense? Dave __ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! Judging by the records you mentioned, it looks like you prefer the -less- intricate and more banging/harder records. This explains the preference to older mills material, some of which was pretty damn hard. I like the new Axis, it's mellow and pleasant. I wouldn't say it's dramatically innovative though, and (for example) the deep moments in 'From the 21st' are somehow deeper than in Ax20. Not every record can be the best. :) I still love my Detroit techno but I feel the need for the intricate sound structures that Aaron describes - I'm still overlistening the Isolee album, the Pub:Summer mixes are dope, and Shake's stuff is just too damn funky. album time
Finally got the Mills album "Every dog has it's day", makes me wonder why it seems like any album I see has been discussed a month or two ago on here. Is it because I'm on the other side of the world, or because y'all are getting whites? Same goes for the Random Noise Generation 'Links in the Chain' vinyl. Anyway it's pretty sweet, Some nice housey stuff from mills. I was pleasantly surprised to hear that brief chordy interlude at the end, from humana (and from the 21st). Such a sweet moment :) How available is the humana ep, anyway, as I'm starting to beleive it's somewhat essential. What's the first track on the RNG record? That's from another record but I can't put my finger on what... it's killing me. The other album I grabbed was the archetype on Black Nation... I like the intracacy of Archetype records - even when it's hard, it' deep. Whatever happened to 21/22 corp anyway? after 'cron' i can't remember hearing from that particular label. Re: [313] Chicago/Detroit/France/Germany
I love the way Cyclone's posts are always thought provoking :) To be honest, I'm not sure I know that much French artists' music, at least not much that has grabbed me. I have a couple of F-Comm records, and maybe an I-Cube or so, but apart from that, nothing comes to mind. What are some of the other French artists around who are making the good stuff? I know Distance is a French label, but a lot of their artists are from elsewhere. At the moment, apart from my first love of the US musicians, I'm REALLY enjoying the German stuff coming out lately. Anyone heard the Ricardo Villalobos on Perlon? It's AWESOME! What about the Users and Gadgets compilation. Check out the Corrado Izzo track on that, sounds like deep Detroit chords. I was a bit uncertain about hearing the downtempo tracks as sometimes downtempo leaves me a bit down (the new recloose excluded). They're actually not that slow anyway. I know we had a thread about downtempo recently - did anyone mention 'Summertime is here'? This theo parrish release is an excellent downtempo track. Question to Lance (or anyone): who was behind the Pub:Summer release then? Awesome song! hoy, back to work. Dave __ Do You Yahoo!? Kick off your party with Yahoo! Invites. http://invites.yahoo.com/

I spose you don't think > about anyone else tho once you put those headphones > on... record stores are another world... Aww, a whole 1/2 hour? :) When I go record shopping, I spend 4 or 5 or 6 hours listening to records - I love my music, and want to be sure not to miss out on anything. I've listened to tracks more than once many times, because so many times in the past i've missed out on fantastic records due to perfunctory listens. It's up to the store to provide more than one turntable, that's just ridiculous. Some of the best records don't reveal themselves on the first listen - for me (although I'm a bit weird like that), the Isolee 'Rest' album sounded bad on the first 3 listens, ok on the next 8 or 10 listens, and now I absolutely love it. Does anyone else ever get this? Deepness needs waiting. Dave > > massive pile of vinyl, who listens to every single > > second of all the tracks > > and ends up buying one record. That is annoying, I'll admit. Some records I just flick through, when it's fairly obvious what sort of style they are. __ Do You Yahoo!? Talk to your friends online with Yahoo! Sounds good! I picked up a Paul Mac record recently on Ongaku, sounds like what you describe. Warm yet powerful techno. 313 list party mixes
Yes! thanks to all who contributed to these being put up. My attempt at swimming to detroit from australia failed, so these are the next best thing. Now, what you would all expect - a track id please. The first mix on there, phred and low (nice electro cuts btw) at around the 24 minute mark. This deep and haunting cut has always eluded me. Who is it?? A great tune... Thanks in advance. Dave np 313 list party mixes :-) __ Do You Yahoo!? Talk to your friends online with Yahoo! Messenger. http://im.yahoo.com
Mills/Atkins in the boondocks of Perth
I thought I'd post a semi-review of this gig since it is pretty freakin 313 relevant. When is the next stop of the mills tour, and atkins as well? I know perth is the only place they played together. Well let me just say that you can add me to the long line of mills fans. That guy actually lived up to his hype and more, something i never would have expected considering the hype surrounding him. The man is INHUMAN... i saw a video of him once and thought it had been sped up - it hadn't. He dj's in fast forward. Either he's a complete natural, or it's like those tennis or golf players that have played hundreds of thousands of hours of tennis since they were a kid and just can't help but be phenomenal. Atkins played first, that was interesting to watch. He kicked off with a few fantastic tunes like a red planet, and the old and new jaguar mixed together. After maybe 3 or 4 tunes he went into disco loop territory... for about an hour it was awful. I couldn't take it, but he got to a point where he kicked into some harder stuff. That was pretty good, quite fast tempo and the mixing got slightly more dynamic. "Strings of Strings of life" got heard which was pretty cool, plus a few other gems. Some good hard techno. Mills stepped up after that and played for a few hours and although by this time i was deleriously tired, i just couldn't drag myself away. I'm so glad i stayed because it was just amazing. There was another point at which the jaguar combo's got played, he stretched it out by playing all 4 different mixes including the original. It went for about 20 minutes with the crowd going beserk. Some deep humana - ish stuff got played as well which won me over completely - the best combination of deep and hard techno. If you have the means - check these guys out (not like every man/dog on this list hasn't already). Dave PS Only Mills can play 'the bells' __ Do You Yahoo!? Talk to your friends online with Yahoo! new records
An absolute glut of high quality tunes in the store when i went shopping yesterday. Actually i spent more money yesterday on records than ever before. A few: Twerk album - Humantics If you liked the Dissappointing Human on context, definitely get this baby. Paranoid stutterings over some fantastic bass work. SenseFiction - Heiko Laux - Kanzleramt Man can this guy possibly do a record i -don't- want to buy? Kanzleramt is a fine label anyway. This ep has 6 songs crammed on there, a nice cover (looks like it was meant to be an album), and features your expected deep moody tech grooves from heiko with a bit less 4/4 kick and a bit more electro kick. G-Flame/Mr G - Moods n grooves Can I be yet another person in a long line of lovers of this release. It kicks ass! I liked the way it's still fairly techno, but with a somewhat slower tempo which gives it plenty of space. Cool. Users and Gadgets Excellent compilation of somewhat more abstract techy housey whatever. Mostly german but i did notice an old plug research 'on the avenue' on there. Deep and fantastic. Peter SpieB - Klang Oh yeah, some more german stuff. Did i hear someone say that Peter SpeiB and peter ford are one and the same? Or is that just a figment of my imagination. Either way this is good stuff if you like your abstract german stuff. Ditto for the "Ibiza" tune on playhouse, dark and different. Btw who has checked out sven vath's new record? Very melodic and full, yet somehow still minimal... I dig it. I love the way some artists take melodic elements and arrange them in a techno fashoion, like they were percussion. I notice this for a lot of hood stuff as well, in particular duet 1. That's why I mentioned him. Also i could think of Question 5, a song off of that in particular. The great thing about these songs is you can slip them into a percussive techno set no problems, and break things up a bit - keep it interesting. 2-bits. Dave __ Do You Yahoo!? (313) Fiebar
Yes, my mistake. It was Leandro Gamez who did that funky techno effort on Fiebar. The reason I thought it was hawtin was due to the shopkeeper telling me it was some sort of hawtin remix - any info on this? Maybe it's a remix of a hawtin track (or maybe I'm completely wrong and hawtin has nothin to do with it). Either way it's pretty cool. Dave __ Do You Yahoo!? Talk to your friends online with Yahoo! Re: (313)kdj 2 track EP's SUCK!
Just to clarify - I haven't heard the record yet - I'm reserving my own judgement until that time. I would also like to point out that this record has not hit any shelves here at all, due to the fact that it doesn't look like it's hit any of the distributor's sheets. Why are so many good records only pressed 100 copies or so? (although most of the time Perth gets a decent portion of these). Is this 'underground' or just snobbery? The other moodymann stuff on the shelves is great... 'ya blessin me' is pretty cool, the pandemonium record is EXCELLENT, and if you missed out on shades of jae, that is available. One thing though, the other side supposedly has 'the setup' on there - that is a different song! 'The setup' as plays on my original shades of jae/setup EP is completely different. Who knows what's going on? Re: (313) 2 track EP's SUCK!
Moodymann is notorious for doing the single sided record. I'd agree with the rest of the crew here - I quite like the idea of an absolutely excellent track all by itself, plenty of pressing space for some fat bass. If the song is good enough, that's all that matters. Also, i like to think of it as a concept thing - don't clutter up a record with filler - just give us your best shot. On the other hand, I've been told that the kdj on moods / grooves isn't actually that good (I guess when you compare it to other moodyman stuff). I'll still hear it for myself, if mike grant decides to repress the sucker. I'm loving all these represses of theo / kdj etc that are out... picked up the three chairs with kdj, theo and rick wilhite. The moodymann track on there - Gawdamn An absolutely killer. (313) hawtin in perth
The latest stop in the hawtin tour was last night here in perth, along with a whole bunch of other people I'm not interested in (aheh... like Adam Freeland). Man, it f*ckin rocked... absolutely no mercy from hawtin, just continuously funky records, mostly hard stuff, along with the occasional electro, german house (Brinkmann!), and 909 workout. The crowd loved it. Sweaty as hell in there, too. I finally heard the sandwiches track as well ("I know you wanna do it"). :) I'm glad there weren't any major hassles like riots and such stuff... is that common in the US What's the story? I quite liked most of the stuff on there, particularly the first few songs. Metroplex's release by Gerald Mitchell, 'Celestial Highways' should be held in the same high regard as Knights of the Jaguar.
