Re: [313] RE: Detroit Techno Art
Hello, Mark Pauline from SRL used to do some pretty off the hook stuff. As time has progressed he has gotten a little more business oriented and he isn't quite as radical as he once was. He isn't attacking bill boards anymore, he isn't stealing his supplies from factories anymore either. ;) These days the stuff that is probably getting him the most attention is the Robot Wars events in SF that he organizes. If you watched Discovery and TLC a couple years ago the events used to get coverage on their tech shows. Remote control robots that smash each other up while the onlooking crowd cheers, its like Rome with IC's. I do not think SRL is very active anymore, in order for SRL to have a performance they have to be commissioned by an individual. I looked into it once out of curiosity, and I think the cost would have been around $150,000, plus the time involved with permits and logistics. I would have hella bragging rights if I could say that I had Mark Pauline build some robots that blow each other up with home built rocket launchers, lazers and flame throwers in Hart Plaza, but I think financing and insuring the whole endeavor would have been difficult. ;) Definitely one of the old school industrial pioneers. I think his billboard modifications are probably the most interesting thing he did, at least in my mind. Fine art is interesting, but I wish there were more people doing art terrorist actions in Detroit. Those who yo baby daddy and casino signs on I-96 are just begging for modification. That is the sad thing about Punk and Industrial, as time passed they stopped being radical and just became another set of poses. But that, my friends, is a completely different thread. Re: [313] Classic Kraftwerk Find
Hello, Good job on the finds! I know that there have been recent repressings from Capitol for Trans-Europe Express and Radioactivity on Vinyl. You should be able to order from most of your better vinyl retailers, as it is a major label release. buying doubles is an option if you do not to touch the old pressing. The shame is that they recorded Computerworld for Warners and that has not seen a recent repressing. I remember Tour De France being recently repressed as well. Radioactivity is an interesting record, I do not like quite as much as Autobahn. The songs were shorter and a little more evolved, and there was definitely greater use of weird synth sounds in the compositions. I though the moog bleeps in morse code on the titletrack was a nice touch. It is good stuff, but not necessarily essential. IMO everything Kraftwerk did between TEE and Tour De France needs to be in everybodys collection, the stuff before TEE is good for historial perspective, and everything after Tour De France should be heard just so you do not make the same mistakes in your own music. ;) While we are on the subject of classic finds, does anyone have any good recommendations for obscure but good new wave records? take care, Mike JavierDrada wrote: Just picked up the original 1974 pressing of Kraftwerk's, Autobahn and the original 1975 pressing of Kraftwerk's, Radio-Activity. Re: [313] carl craig at cranbrook
Hello, This idea goes back a lot further, you would have to look into academic electronic circles for the beginning of concept. Off hand, Edgard Varese and Stockhausen both employed this concept in their installation work in the 1950's. I am sure there were other using this concept in their installation work during the early days of tape music. I would imagine poly-channel sound goes back even further than the 1950's. I have a collection of academic electronic music history books from the late 60's/early 70's, I will have a look through them tomorrow afternoon for more info. Anything people are doing now in digital media is simply a technological refinement of concepts people were carrying at least half a century ago. Take care, Mike On December 8, 1995, the west sound circle was installed in the legendary e-werk in Berlin. This event marked a turning point in the evolution of the clubbing experience. Through the use of state of the art quadrophonic sound engineering, renowned DJs and live acts created for the first time ever a rare multidimensional landscape of sound. -- Michael Taylor : [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://homes.arealcity.com/Intermodal/index.html http://www.mp3.com/TheMSProject http://www.egroups.com/group/tech-gear Occasional collisions unexpectedly encountered determine the direction of a lifetime. Re: [313] Trying....bullshit
Hello, I am not trying to start a big argument, but I will put it to you like this. get a random teenage techno DJ, and play them a marco corolla record, and then play him the Kick the Pump Mix of Big Fun by Derrick May. I guarantee you he will pick the Marco Corolla record. You know your stuff, and you have a perspective of a person who knows their stuff. Most people do not have your perspective, and they do not judge records the way you do. You can see the context, and because of that you can enjoy most of the metroplex catalog. It is easy to point to No UFO's, but how about Play it Cool, or Triangle of Love. Those records are great, but you are nuts if you think that those records are great productions. They were made in low budget studios, and they sound like they were made in low budget studios. bad gated reverb kicks, poorly recorded vocals, they sound old and primitive by modern standards. As for composition, Juan was good, but his shit isn't that complex. He had a great sense of groove, he could write in key, and he had a knack for good sounds. When you get outside of the 313 dogma and learn a bit of music theory you might judge those records a little differently. Juan was good, but he wasn't Bach or Miles Davis. I like them because they sound old and primitive. They have soul, they are interesting and distinctive. But what you and I see in those records, the average punter does not. I do not think Marco Carolla is better, I just think he is a lot more obvious, and that is the whole point of my posts. I still have my Detroit records, I don't miss the hard techno records I sold. If not being rigidly dogmatic about records is sacrilegious, I am ready for the stones. Early Detroit is great music, but it is just a branch on the tree of music. It is great music, but I have enough perspective to know that it is not the center of the musical universe. take care, Mike [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: [EMAIL PROTECTED]: records, but I admit that many of them are poorly produced, the writing isn't all that great, and they do not really work in a modern context. I like sorry, man. but this rubbish. early m500/metroplex is surely not poorly produced at all. juan`s early works still kick ass in 2000 and will still be working in ANY modern context beyond the year 00, while any modern type 4/4 bangtech all sound alike music is almost forgotten once the dj enters the next one in the mix. serious futuristic musical visions last forever, son No U.F.O`s is gonna move the crowd from chicago to oslo and back even in the year 2976 ... Re: [313] Trying....
my only problem is finding records that are pre 1990. I think that is part of the reason why you may disagree with Cyclones post about people not liking early techno. When I think of those early records(play it cool by M500 comes to mind) I can understand exactly why a 16 year old who just got into techno would not like it. If you were raised on post '91 techno, those early metroplex records might be difficult to get your head around. Honestly, I love those records, but I admit that many of them are poorly produced, the writing isn't all that great, and they do not really work in a modern context. I love them because they sound so old, so primitive, and because in many ways they laid the groundwork for so much of what came after. I like them because they are history pieces, and I judge them on that basis. When it comes to immediate gratification, I understand why people would prefer filter house or Mills'y stuff to very early Detroit records. Most people do not listen to records because of their historical significance. I think those records are great, but I understand why people might not like them. I will also admit that 3 years ago if I had to choose between Ocean to Ocean, or a Regis record, I would have picked Regis. Some people will be into it, and some will not, it isn't anything to sweat over. Big Fun still sounds great to me, and I think Derrick May's music will continue to date well. There are other records that are only going to work as nostalgia pieces. Some people will dig that sound, and other people will not grasp it. I do think that those early records might not be the easiest thing for people to get into when it comes to Techno. Mills seems alot more immediate to me than Bang The Party on Transmat. take care, mike -- Michael Taylor : [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://homes.arealcity.com/Intermodal/index.html http://www.mp3.com/TheMSProject http://www.egroups.com/group/tech-gear

We talk about records here...we talk about gear elsewhere
hello, I would like to comment about the current off topic-ness of a lot of the 313 posts lately. Gear is cool, and it definitely was an obsession of mine for a few years, but it is off-topic on this list. If you feel the overwhelming need to talk about Roland or Sonic Foundry, that is cool, but you should do it on other lists. I know that I am not the only person on this list that has paid dues in AH, DH, RMMS, RMMM, Synthzone, Sonicstate, Harmony Central...and when I want gear information, I will go to those sources. When I want to hear about what is going on in Detroit these days, or want to know about an obscure pre-UR Mike Banks record or details about what Damon Booker did after retroactive records, that's when I come to 313. I do not mean to be a jerk about it, but it is better discussed elsewhere among more knowledgeable people who are interested in the subject. One of you guys should go to eGroups.com and start a detroit techno gear list, or something to that extent. It will take 5 minutes, and it will save a lot of OT traffic on this list. If somebody would make the list, I would join, personally. It's something to think about... take care, mt
Re: [313] We talk about records here...313 gear mailing list.
Hello, I took my own advice, and started a gear mailing list dedicated to Detroit related electronic music. IF you would be interested in joining, click on this link: http://www.egroups.com/group/tech-gear It is fun, it is easy, and if you want to talk about Rich Hawtin with a devilfish 303, or Dan Bell running up and down Gratiot Ave. with a fully loaded RZ-1, you can do that cuz it will be 100% on topic. If you want to talk about Lawrence Burden sweating behind a W-30 during a Octave One live set, you can do that too, it is all good. On what other list can you learn fun facts like the main board played during the Tikiman/CR DEMF set was a Prophet 5. You feel me dog??? mt Intermodal wrote: hello, I would like to comment about the current off topic-ness of a lot of the 313 posts lately. Re: [313] Re: Industrial - The Cabs
hello, Cabaret Voltaire had their first release back in 1978 so they were doing electronic music while a lot of industrial artists were still at nursery school. As for now, from what I remember Steven Mallender is living in Australia, Richard Kirk is still alive and well and releasing new stuff and I can't remember what the 3rd bloke was called. They were doing live shows before many of us were born, they were messing around with tape loops and audio collages on stage as early as 1974. I believe the third original member was named Chris Watson, he left the cabs in 1982. He eventually went on to become an audio engineer for the BBC. Apparently he went to specialize is nature based field recordings, and actually put out a few solo releases of field recordings. If anyone has more info, I would be interested in knowing more. hey, Ive got to second this. I am glad that I was not the only one who found it offensive that Derrick and Omar got a lukewarm reaction for DJ'ing, and an utterly confused look for the poetry(which basically nailed everything that is wrong with American society in 5 minutes) while Rich shows up with a 909 and a compressor and the crowd goes apeshit. Not to hate on Rich, but Derrick May deserved alot more love from that crowd than he got. He was playing those great afro-cuban jazz records by the end, just so lush and deep. Hawtin was alright, it was cool to hear Vaporspace and Lyot on a system, but he was not coming with soul like Derrick May. I guess we are just getting old Phred. *** Ain't Psycick T.V. the act of Genesis P. Orridge, founder of Throbbing Gristle? The thing people need to remember about Genesis P.O is that he is a media personality, and not a musician. He is good for interviews about concentration camp psychology, why fluxus sucks, Crowley related ritual Magick, and William Seward Burroughs, just do not ask the guy to write a tune. He was a performance artist, not a musician. TG was Genesis applying the gallery performance art of Coum Transmissions into a rock context. Most people do not realize that the brains behind Throbbing Gristle were really Chris Carter, and to a lesser extent Sleazy P. That is why there never has really been a true GPO solo record, he isn't a musician. When you listen to newer Psychic TV you are really listening to younger Fred Gianelli. From what Fred has posted to this list, he does not feel that he was treated very well, and felt cheated by the whole process. OT Gear Posts
Hello, I just wanted to mention to anybody who has been making posts about gear the last few days that there are other lists to talk about this stuff(and it is on topic on those lists.) There are lists like Digital Hell, Analogue Heaven, Movable Parts, IDM-Makers List, Electronic_music...that all deal with this subject and would be happy to hear about things that have already been covered in greater detail and much more insightfully. This is all really old information, please check the archives of those lists for more info on said drum machines, synths... Thanks alot, mt -- Michael Taylor : [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://homes.arealcity.com/Intermodal/index.html http://www.mp3.com/TheMSProject
Theorem vs. Stewart Walker
Hello, Picked up this 12 this afternoon, and I have to say that I quite like it. This is my favorite record of the THX series, and it is the best music that Dale Lawrence has recorded. Deep and dubby and in line with the Elements records and previous THX releases, but it is showing a strong evolution. I give Dale credit, each record he puts out is better than the last. Definitely a record to check out this week. Take care, mt -- Michael Taylor : [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://homes.arealcity.com/Intermodal/index.html http://www.mp3.com/TheMSProject

Bangin' hard monotrack techno from the mid-90's, considered brilliant in its day. If you like monotrack techno it is good stuff, if you like your records to have musical developments and phrases that last longer than a bar or two, you might not care for this record. In my eyes, it is pretty souless and disposable, but that is _my_ opinion. BABY DIDDY - Original Message - From: Music Non Stop Sales [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Monday, May 08, 2000 5:35 PM Subject: New Kraftwerk Annoucement Hi all Today MNS can bring you news of a fantastic new Kraftwerk release. KRAFTWERK - A SHORT INTRODUCTION TO KRAFTWERK CD / BOOK £15.99 Please note that this is an OFFICIAL release. Produced by Sonic Books who are personal friends with Kraftwerk. Ralf Florian allowed this release to happen as all the tracks (original recordings) on the CD are over 20 years old, hence the copyright is no longer with EMI, but with the band members themselves. For the first time in the 30 years of KRAFTWERK history, this CD offers pre- viously unreleased NEW version of 7 Kraftwerk classics, never before heard on any album or compilation! 45 minutes of EXCLUSIVE versions of timeless classics. The CD opens with a 3.38-minutes harder and more rhythmic version of 'It's More fun to compute', originally recorded for a planned 12 in 1981, but never released. It is followed by a 1990 re-recording of 'Kristallo', a track from legendary 3rd Kraftwerk-LP 'Ralf Florian'. Kraftwerk were working on this version for a possible release on the '91 cd 'The Mix', but the track remained unfinished and can be heard on this CD for the first time. The following 6 mins. 31' version of 'Autobahn' was another early study for a re-make, intended for 'The Mix' and is completely different from both official versions, although the lead vocals are missing. The very short version of 'Hall of Mirrors' (2.36) dates back to 1976 and is a demo-version of the song, later released on 'Trans Europe Express'. It follows an all new instrumental version of 'Radioactivity', that has not much in common with the official version or Kevorkian's remix on the single of 1991. Quite minimal, very rhythmic and atmo-spheric at the same time! 'Uranium' was a short track on 1975's 'Radioactivity' album here included in a completely re-recorded, much longer (7.09) and different version, originally planned for 'The Mix', but never released. 'Das Model' finally is included in an early demo-version from late 1977. It was to become Kraftwerk 's biggest hit so far a few years later, when it was re-released as a single in 1981. The 88 pages booklet in CD-size offers a short introduction to the great maestros of the 'Electronic Order' who founded in the early 70ies became a school which was to produce noteworthy heirs all over the planet: From the Human League to Depeche Mode, from The Chemical Brothers to the last techno heroes of our days. Unforgotten and adored by the public, musicians and critics alike, they have just returned after years of silence (their last official album dates back to 1986!) with the new single 'Expo 2000', showing that Ralf Hütter and Florian Schneider are here to stay for the third millenium, too. The Booklet includes the band-history, excerpts from Interviews and full discography including promo-only releases, bootlegs etc.etc. We shall have this item in stock and shipping at the start of next week, so pre-order now! Re: (313) 808 usage in mainstream music
hello, The 808 was a mainstay back in the 80's, but that stuff is rarely used anymore. Ever since the first sampling drum machines started coming out in the late 80's and early 90's (EMU sp-1200, Roger Linn's Akai MPC-60...) the 808 has been fading out. You can really start to hear the shift around the time Bell Biv Devoe and that era of commercial RB started coming out. That whole era of stuttering, swung-out snare drum roll's would not have been possible without the shuffle function Roger Linn programmed into the MPC-60(and co-incidentally alot of that era of RB sounds so grungy because of of the fact that the MPC-60 was only a 12 bit sampler) The MPC series, and the rising cost of 808's really put the 808 out of business in black music in the 1990's. You can still hear altered samples on the 808 on commercial black radio(even though demographically it is actually white radio) Listen to some of that shite coming out of Cash Money or no-limit, and you will find 808 samples. Then again that stuff is all sampling drum machines too. Bling Bling, The Block is Hot, any of that crap, it all comes out of an MPC. Gear-rant mode : off Mike Taylor NP : Wolfgang Voight/Gas : 20-2000 Andrew Duke wrote: blair: many of today's pop musicians don't have the reverence for the 808 and other classic gear like those on a list such as this might have. so, when an 808's sounds do make it into one of today's pop songs, it is likely just another drum sample, nothing special, to the person using it ie just one of many drum sounds in a sampler, sampler disc, cdr, etc. they might be using an 808 in some way and not even realize it or even care. andrew duke Blair McBride wrote: i know that the 808 was used a lot in mainstream music in the 80's and whatnot. does anyone know how widely used it is today in hiphop/rnb/etc? the rnb group blaque has a track called 808 and although im not a fan of rnb, i was attracted to the song at first cause they sang about an 808 (among other things). i was under the impression that 808's are rarely used today in most popualar music, and i thought that blaque just sang about 808's to be old skool. any thoughts? blair __ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- Cognition/Andrew Duke's In The Mix mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] http://techno.ca/cognition 1096 Queen St #123 Halifax NS Canada B3H 2R9 - To unsubscribe, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] For additional commands, e-mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] -- Michael Taylor : [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://homes.arealcity.com/Intermodal/index.html I am still learning. Re: (313) basic channel on planet E
Hey, I assume you are refering to the Quadrant record that came out in 94/95? It is really good, but it is unlike the Quadrant material on BC. It is a little more synthy sounding, and not quite as grey as the basic channel material. It seems to me that it was a little more geared towards a Detroit label, so it has a little more of a Detroit feel in the Synth dept. Definitely a good record to have if you can find it. Re: (313) My gratitude and apology - Velvet Lounge last night!
Hey, KREEM ~ Triangle Of Love - METROPLEX RECORDS (a true Detroit classic) how could someone not like that song. it is proably my favorite song by Mr Saunderson, behind Velocity Funk of course. I can understand how somebody could not like it. It is such a primitive take on New Order, and if you cannot judge something outside of its historical perspective I can understand how you would not like it. It isnt modern or slick, it is the sound of some guy just getting his shit together in a studio. Then again, that is exactly why I love that track, because it is so raw and it reeks of that era. ;) That jam that has soul! It is probably my 3rd favorite KS track next to Goodlife and Feel The Mood. Take care, Mike Taylor NP Triangle of Love __ Do You Yahoo!? Talk to your friends online with Yahoo! Re: (313) mike grant
greetings, I am going to have to second what BVL has to say. I do not particlularly care for the a-side, it is a bit housey, good, but nothing really amazing. However, the B-side is off the hook. I am going to have to put my foot down and say that that Rest in Peace My Brother is my favorite cut off this record. It is a non-four on the floor track, that reminds me in a way of a primitive Psyche/BFC era Carl Craig with rhymic elements that remind me of the Mood EP by MonoJunk. This is very much a current track. I remember Mike telling me about a friend of his being shot in the studio during a robbery, perhaps this is some reference to that incident. The A2, Sunlight, is an increbible track as well. It is not quite as moody as Rest but it is a floor track. Its a smooth 808 kick, with a simple bassline, with percussion elements that are very reminescent of the Mood EP on Plug Research. The strings on this track make it, along with these abstract lead lines that work very well. It is a deep soulful techno track, this is what people _should_ think of when you say techno. Bill is right, this record is fantastic, I highly reccomend it. I just wish that the Moods and Grooves records were more in this vein rather than on the Detroit House tip. Either way, this is a label worth looking into, and I reccomend their records highly. Take care, Mike Taylor William VanLoo wrote: The track Sunshine off that record is fantastic. It's the only one I play, but it alone is worth buying the 12 for. It's deep, very bassy...and has gorgeous synth washes that come in after a brief intro. Highly recommended. I have a very distinct memory of Paris carrying an R8mk2 up the stairs and how impressive it looked to me at the time. John Williams also played a set at Exat at Zoots I would like to say sometime in 1997. John Williams also collaborated with Dale Lawrence on Graviti, on the first Theorem LP on Plus8. It was one of the strongest tracks on that album. I have also heard a bit of gossip that he has a couple mixes floating around for a TH remix project, but I think Dale might be the guy to ask about this. ...snip... E-mail me for contact details. Making records doesn't threaten your life. If you fuck up you're not going to die, but nonetheless, the thrill is to do something that takes you by surprise, that makes you wonder, god, what in me does this concept connect with?
