(313) Aaron Carl's Latest EP (Free Download)

2009-05-03 Thread Wes Prince
Just a heads up to help spread the word. It's available at his site:

http://www.aaroncarl.com/

Here's some details from RA:

Detroit producer Aaron-Carl has decided to make his latest EP available via
his website, and it won't cost you a penny to download.

The collection, entitled Electrevival, is comprised of two exclusive tracks
as well as three new versions of previously released material. Speaking on
his website in an official statement, Carl says that the most important
thing I want you to do is ENJOY it! Some of these songs are new, some are
not. But ALL of them represent various points in my life and career‹the
different paths I've chosen, where I came from, where I'm going... You get
the point.

Of the new tracks featured, one is a remix of If There Is a Heaven by
fellow Detroit residents Ican, whilst the other is a hip-hop collaboration
with relative unknown Humility's Hand. Backed by new versions of
Aaron-Carl's bona fide anthems Tears and Down, the collection is an
insightful look into the work of the stalwart producer, who has previously
released on labels such as Metroplex, Subject Detroit and Mahogani Music.

Re: (313) New Recloose

2008-03-20 Thread Wes Prince
That Petone gig sounds like it had some fine chemistry between the players.
He's playing soon with his full 8-piece live band at a little club in the
heart of K Rd here in Auckland, 4:20.

What about the pleasures of musical humour/irony he's stylistically mining
in the new material on this album? I'm trying to think of other Detroit
techno/electro acts who arguably might do the tongue-in-cheek thing
apparent in 'Perfect Timing' compared to say other eras. First thought of
the DGP, Aux 88, Gary Martin...anyway, here's more of Matt's thoughts from
the interview:

It is kind of a joke. The thing is, you listen to it and the whole album
isn't an '80s funk record. There are definitely three, four, maybe five
tunes that are influenced by that era. Think about it, those songs that
influenced it ['Perfect Timing'] had to be taken with a grain of salt as
well, cause they're pretty ridiculous. Look at Prince, look at the sh*t he's
wearing, or what he used to wear. You think you're meant to take that dude
totally seriously? No! There is a bit of irony going on there, Parliament,
all of it. There is definitely somewhat of a comedic element going on.

Matt may not have realized it but he's a natural-born band leader.

It's not boundary-stretching music but it's always a pleasure to see
something really well done. And they may have gone in some
different directions since I saw them. Anyway, recommended from
 here...

Some insights (from local mag Groove Guide) on the eve of Recloose's NZ tour
with live band. Responding to the interviewer's description of 'Perfect
Timing' as full of 70s/80s funk echoes -- an album where Polynesian soul
 meets Detroit robo-funk, Matt reflects:

It's just a phase man, I'm getting older and I miss the good old days of
funky electronic noodling synth business. I was born in 1974 and I'm still
at it at 33. I guess I'm at the point where you start getting nostalgic. So
yeah, a bit of nostalgia and me trying to recreate my funky suburban
childhood memories...coming from Detroit there is always, well not always,
the impression you have to keep it real. You know, keep it dark, keep it
melancholy. I like that side of music as well, and I've done it before. But,
I mean, life's too short to always be serious. I think sometimes it's funny
to make some 'tongue-in-cheek' sh*t that makes you want to move.

More comments if people are interested...

(313) New Recloose

2008-03-18 Thread Wes Prince

Cheers,

Wes

Re: (313) new recloose album

2008-03-06 Thread Wes Prince
I've heard some of it -- superb stuff. Here's a review from the local paper:

Recloose: Perfect Timing
By Rebecca BarryHerald rating: * * * *

Dance music may not be as fashionable these days but those still into its
jazzy, funky strains will find loads of good times on the fourth album from
Matt Chicoine.

The Detroit native, who settled in New Zealand seven years ago, has been
embraced as part of the local music scene, defying his name with music
designed for socialising. A song like Deeper Waters, with Joe Dukie, Warren
Maxwell and members of Fat Freddys Drop shows Recloose can balance the techy
sound of his homeland with the laidback vibe of Aotearoa. No, it's not quite
perfect timing for a release that could have been a summer slammer five
years ago. But Recloose will revive your taste for noodly, bottom-heavy
party tunes.

Steeped in late 70s, early 80s funk, and coloured with bongos, brass and
squelching Moog keys, it's a beautifully produced album that pays exquisite
attention to detail, whether it's his consistently inventive beats, fun,
spacey effects or clever use of vocal talent.

And damn, he knows how to get his groove on, from the punchy nu-jazz of Can
It Be, the deeply funky So Cool with Tyna, or the skittish Emotional Funk.
Even when the lyrics are no more than a doo-doot-doo motif (Soloman's
Alive) you'll find it difficult to sit still, which is just as well as he's
about to set out on national tour with his band.

Label: Loop
Verdict: US expat will revive your inner beatnik

Cheers all,

Slater's album Fluids Amniotic under the name Morganistic (Input Neuron,
1994), is a bit of a neglected classic to my ears. Marbles still sounds
incredibly powerful on the right system no doubt. You can hear the influence
of Robert Hood et al. on some tracks, but he invariably does his own jacking
minimal thing with it to great effect.

The remix of Kenny Larkin's Loop 2 he did for RS deserves special mention
as well for its timeless funk killer strings.

Ho's music has a real sense of history embedded in its grooves, like a lot
of the best Detroit techno. Some real mental energy spirit to complement
the sensuality of the rhythms.

That inner track flowing on from the Pure mix of Magick (Meta 19) always
slays me with its sampled voiceover: I go with my feelings, you know, I
love music...the only thing that makes me play continue (in) this business

It's also worth remembering that Mike Banks (like K. Larkin, S. Stoll,
J. Hendrix) is an ex-armed services man who has chosen to wage war
on oppression, injustice exploitation using alternate means which
appear inconsequential to the unknowing unwitting. At the risk
of stating the obvious, politics music remain inseparable in his book.

UR's reaction to the bootlegger problem can't be divorced from the ongoing
struggle to prevent George Orwell's vision from becoming the
all-encompassing reality: The future of mankind is a jackboot stomping
endlessly on a human face. UR has determined it will kick back, right to
the bitter end.

I think it's kinda a hip-hop way of expressing it, appropriating terms like

But some 'wars' are necessary - struggles for self-determination, justice,
equality, etc - and I am as pacifist as anyone. War here is figurative, it
could be as much about people power on the streets or campaigning Sony as
 with the Jaguar 'cover'.
UR have a compelling point on the bootlegging. Bootlegging affects their
ability to run a business and look out for their families - and so achieve
 self-determination.
I think KDJ has been very, very, very misunderstood. People shouldn't take
it so personally, unless they're bootleggers!
I think you'll find he just supports all people who keep it real and
 realness has no colour.

Haven't really followed this thread, as I have been off for a while, but I
am sure it's figurative, as is a lot of UR's music and imagery.
Probably more a reference to The Struggle - civil rights, African-Americans,
Indigenous peoples, working class, women... self-determination, equality,
  etc.
It's there to make you think?

While I do not support the rip-off, I think the footer message War when

(313) D'n'B/Kraftwerk Live

2003-01-18 Thread Wes
Can't remember anyone mentioning Jonny L's darkly evocative track,
Detroit, off his album 'Sawtooth'. Carl Craig remixed one of his
earlier singles as well: This Time, on XL, wasn't it? L is one of
the select few who could be mentioned in the same breath as Photek, IMHO,
though he seems to have dropped off a bit during the last few years.

Kraftwerk live the other night were devastatingly powerful. Slater
finished his set with some of that overwhelmingly stringladen FSOL stuff
off 'Lifeforms' (though there could have been some Orb in there as well).
Then it was all on, non-stop, the 4 greying, grey-clad laptoppers
pumping out the classics: Numbers, Pocket Calculator, the new
UR/Rolando re/remix of Expo 2000, Neon Lights, Autobahn, TEE,
Radioactivity etc. all the way through to Musique... as an encore.

Best track was probably Tour de France though there really wasn't a weak
moment bar the fact they left out Computer Love :-( Superb visuals
clinical perfection all round, and defiantly uncompromising (in contrast to
the crowd-pleasing antics of Underworld, who followed.)

Best moment: getting caught up, with 5000 others, in the irresistible
electro funkiness of Expo as the Detroit...Germany: Soul Electric
refrain filled the pavilion.

Go to Concerts and then lire for the Paris shows. The quality is not

(www.churchofeuthanasia.org) is about the only techno response to 9/11,
which is also the date he's intending to release it. The track actually kind
of echoes Dave's comment below about it almost seeming like a 'Made For TV

[313] D. May Interview

2002-06-20 Thread Wes
Quite an enlightening interview with Derrick May (by Elizabeth Mitkos) in
today's edition of Toronto weekly, eye (Beat section). Sample quote:

I don't think we realized what we were really doing [...] We just
followed our passion and it turned into something. And that's normally the
way it happens. Good things happen because they're not thought out,
they're just spontaneously combusted. Nobody was monitoring us. So when
this music hit the world, it had such an influence, such a
strange-sounding feeling, it seemed to latch on to hearts and minds that
always seemed disillusioned, disenchanted and not necessarily satisfied.
That's exactly what this music is doing today, because those people have
kept the fire going.

You can probably find the rest on www.eye.net

[313] Tresor has to close later this year (fwd)

2002-06-20 Thread Wes

From: C-zam [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Sad news, I'm afraid:

Last week, renowned techno club Tresor (Berlin), received an announcement
from the new owner of the Tresor property. Later this year, one of the most
notorious techno locations ever, will be demolished.

Of course Tresor is hoping for a miracle and needs support. A spokesman of
Tresor said : 'Fight with us for Tresor's survival'.

This means also, that Tresor will celebrate its last Love Parade and Tresor
Park this year, which will be undoubtly legendarious. The theme this year is
Solid.

some that are more BC-esque than others?

None of them are particularly BC-esque, apart from the grainy, eq-heavy
production techniques used on the dub versions that accompany certain tracks
on certain discs, like this one:

Horace Andy Meets Naggo Morris Wayne Jarrett: Mini Showcase (Wackies
1716/1722)

Others now out:

The Meditations: I Love Jah (Wackies 510)
Junior Delahaye: Showcase (Wackies 1382)
Love Joys: Lovers Rock (Wackies 2383) Reggae Vibes (Wackies 3239)

Try bentcrayon.com, as I seem to remember seeing them in stock there.

Though not part of the recent re-releases organized by BC, don't miss one
of the wickedest Horace Andy albums he's ever made: Dance Hall Style. Wayne
Jarrett's Bubble Up is also a classic.

From more recent years, an album by Japanese melodica player, Takashi,
backed by Wackie's Riddim Force is well worth a listen (especially if
you're a fan of the late Augustus Pablo). It's entitled Melodic Moods.
Sugar Minnott's latest, From the Heart (on Black Wacks), also has some
solid tracks. Lots of computer riddims, but in a different style to BC,
 R S.

I live in a strongly West Indian area of Toronto, am lucky enough to
have an old-style record store nearby--which could have been transplanted
directly from Kingston--laden to the gills with 30 years of reggae history
in almost total disarray. Digging round for an hour or two often yields a
Wackies gem or two. These types of laid back, family-run store are where
you should also look for this material. Support the originators.

Re: [313] basic channel cd qs

2002-06-15 Thread Wes
It's like they felt a deliberate need to atone for the metal box design hitch
by releasing both the Rhythm Sound CD comps. in hemp[?]-based biodegradable
holders, which look good enough to smoke. (Though, of course, the BC comp.
originally came out in a cardboard sleeve, so there goes that theory.)

Has anyone ever had any trouble getting through customs with the R S
comps? Does the compressed greenery give off any sus. aroma to those
drug-loving dogs they employ? :=//!

Remember the Plastikman CD cover that looked like a sheet of acid got
someone into strife in the Mid-West a few years back? To fly in N. America
with the Chain Reaction/BC metal box collection of albums (all seven or so) in
one's luggage these days would be asking for trouble, no? I decided against
it--just taking two at most next flight.

A question for Rene from Scion: has he taken a close listen to the title
track of G-Man's latest on Force Inc., Avanti? The legacy of Lyot
lives on with a vengeance! Any plans for more Vainquer material? Substance?

Ask about the re-release of all the wonderful Wackies material with which
they're currently heavily involved, how BC continues to tie in with
Rhythm Sound. Who else from the Jamaican pantheon of reggae singers
players might they collaborate with in the future?

Any chance of more remixes of Carl Craig material (a la Climax,
Quadrant)?

To what extent do they feel the superb laptop mac stylings of Scion (live,
at any rate) match (or uneasily rub up against) the obsessive analog ethos
of BC? Does the upcoming Scion/BC Tresor set represent a techno. 'soundclash'
in that respect?

I sample hours of radio air waves every morning and dissect

assemble all the bits, like a puzzle or a collage. My approach is inspired

Skidoo, ACR, DC were each breaking new ground in their own right, creating
classics never bettered by their later recordings. They each cut first,
cut deep. Hence we can talk about them in the same breath as among the

I think it depends on the venue crowd what kind of set he spins. DA

cd, DA-01, represents his more clubby style he plans to release
another 3 mix comps. this year. They'll presumably show off the remaining

The DA-01 mix features producers like Francois Lauren, Mr. G, The Reaver,
Nick Holder, Sebastian Leger, The Ambush, Francesco Pico, DJ Sandy Vs
Sinesweeper, Redhead, and Bryan Zentz amongst others. Plenty of superb DA
reworks, plus a few by Jamie Anderson. A really well compiled,
energy-filled set, though damn expensive to buy here in Canada. (The
Saunderson 'Trust the Dj' one will set you back over $40 with tax too.
Maybe it's cheaper on the net?)

Re: [313] Porter ricks - query

2002-03-28 Thread Wes
You're welcome. But if you stopped buying after Biokinetics then you may
have missed hearing the following superb releases which took the Ricks
sound in a slightly different direction:

Porter Ricks: Porter Ricks (Mille Plateaux, 1997. Contains the great Scuba
Lounge, Spoiled various versions of Redundance)

Porter Ricks Techno Animal: Symbiotics (Force Inc., 1999. Wicked bottom
end, stellar tracks)

Melwig also remixed an old Tuxedomoon track or two last year. Check the Thomas
Koner website for more discographical info. Oh yeah, the NINails remix is
worth a listen--a bit formulaic sounding, mind you.

Porter Ricks have been spotted hanging out with Thomas Brinkmann on his
floating studio somewhere in the Mediterranean, sampling dolphin calls
generally going deep. That's when they're not busy with remixes for
acts like Nine Inch Nails legendary punk group, Flipper...

Seriously though, Thomas Koner has been releasing material on Mille
Plateaux (Daikan), and Die Stadt (2 live albums with Asmus Tietchens as
Kontakt der Junglinge), + some vinyl-only projects. If you're looking
for material in the PR vein, check Andi Melwig's solo disc as Continuous
Mode on Klang Elektronik, Disinformation Design. A future classic:
 hyperfunk rules!

RE: [313] other music mailing lists?

2002-03-22 Thread Wes
The Wire run their own mailing list. I'm not sure if it's as eclectic as
the mag (where you can find artists of the calibre/diversity you mention,
sometimes all in the same issue). May be more what you're after.

I picked up the Vladislav Delay: Naima cd on Staubgold a while back, still
haven't had a chance to listen to it, let alone review the thing. Seems
like he's sourcing the Anima material from his last release as VD for this
live extemporization. Love the credits: vocals: girlfriend

Actually, if there is a mailing list that represents exactly what I am not
looking for, it is the [EMAIL PROTECTED] list. ;)

To be even more specific, what I am looking for is a list that is pretty
broad in range, something that encompasses the whole of electronic music. I
am looking for a list that will discuss Vladislav Delay, Electric Tones
Records, Edgard Varese and Derrick May during the course of a single day.
Basically, a big mailing list that covers the whole of electronic music and
 is more content than chatter.

I want a list with more discussions about why Ionisation was better or worse

than Deserts, what is happening with obscure amsterdam IDM labels, and what
were the 12s to pick up this week. Ideally, it will be low traffic high
 content.

 Hello,

Does anybody have any recommendations for music mailing lists that are
interesting and informative? I am looking for something that covers 313,
ambient and IDM without a lot of OT opinion posts, and other gratuitous
traffic that seems to plague this list. Something web based would be nice
 as

well, something like I Love Music, but with more electronic content.

As much as I love this list and the people that I have met through it, it
 is

taking up to much of time time for too little information.

 Take care,

SND = a duo, afaik. Tender Love is a tad more beat-oriented less
cerebrally chilled than previous releases. Less obvious Detroit influences

[313] RH Single

Someone mentioned Richie Hawtin. Recently picked up Closer to the (Re-)Edit
on CD single. 2 cuts totalling just 11 or so mins., (Re-)edit #1:
freak'd which is actually rather subdued, (Re-)edit #2: ranged. This
last one uses Rhythm Sound, some Bluetrain/Mosaic track(s) to quite
devastating effect. Definitely worth a listen on a serious system, though
it's hard to top the original source materials. Dean de Costa can do no wrong
in my book.

Do I got a story to tell, I was actually around to experience some of that
era, brings back memories of seeing a young Jeff Mills when he was with UR
back in 91 during the Punisher tour. I think it was his only Texas
appearance, he played Deep Elem Live in Dallas and his mixing was I geuss
you could say wizard like and flawless (no train wrecks) of course he
had some kid with him that would hand him a record every 30 sec or so.

He followed up the next day on a local radio show playing the same exact
set. Here's playlist for all you old school trainspotters, man I wish I
still had that on tape.

Those were the memories the early rave and techno scene. I wouldn't be
caught dead going out to a rave these days unless someone paid me to spin.

Re: [313] p-funk

2002-02-07 Thread Wes
A couple of years ago Derrick May took a turn at The Wire's Invisible
Jukebox. He listened tried to identify tracks by Herbie Hancock, Olly
Wilson, First Choice, Dade Krama, UR, Kraftwerk, Depeche Mode, Ice Cube, A
Guy Called Gerald (one of the unsung heroes of future music), The
Williams Fairey Brass Band (Acid Brass version of Strings...)

Last track up was Funkadelic's (Not Just) Knee Deep, from Uncle Jam
Wants You (Warners). Here's a transcription of what followed:

DM: Hell, yeah! [Starts singing along] You can go to Detroit now and this
stuff is still on rotation on the radio. This is a big part of my youth.

M. Shallcross: So is this your favourite track from today's selection?

DM: Yeah, everything else is kind of okey-doke. I wouldn't mind playing
this at a party now, just to see what happens. I've heard Rob Hood play
this, but I don't think he played enough of it.

MS: Your famous and somewhat over-repeated equation for Techno was
'Kraftwerk and George Clinton meeting in an elevator'. Does Techno
sometimes forget its funk roots?

DM: Yes, I think so. It was never meant to be just about technology. It
was the sound of man and machine making love. I would love to see
Kraftwerk and George Clinton on the same stage, playing one after another.
That would be cool. I'm still looking out for something like this today.

At any rate, this article made me lose respect for him.

Is that the reason you mis-spelt his first name throughout your post? The
thing is, many unprincipled journalists have made a dark artform out of

their words to suit an agenda. Usually, that agenda is to stir s**t up

So take it with a grain of salt. As the lines from an old Soft Boys

Re: [313] Juan Atkins - then having a break

2002-02-03 Thread Wes
Nobody is denying the fact that Black artists like Juan or Stacey
have had a raw deal when it comes to gaining anything like widespread
commercial acceptance with their particular brand of techno--you're
preaching to the converted there, I'm afraid. Going unrecognized in one's
homeland is part of the price all artists whose work proves ahead of its
time must pay, like it or not. At least we support their cause by buying
their material turning people on to it whenever possible. In terms of true
activism the creation of what Pullen calls thinking machines, impassioned
music will always speak louder than impassioned words.

Venting one's spleen in a self-righteous attempt to blame the woes of some
Black techno artists _solely_ on race can appear a little reductive has
caused a few firestorms on the list (mea culpa!) You may choose to disagree,
but things are usually vastly more complex than they appear on the surface,
over-simplified arguments (beguiling as they may be), are often alienating
to others and the kiss of death to (constructive) dialogue.

Please respond off-list if you feel you must.

Keep the faith, spread the sounds,

Wes

Soul Center*, Let's Go, from the first album on W.v.B. Enterprises/NL.
No idea where Brinkmann sampled the vocal, but he's awfully fond of The
Undisputed Truth, The Temptations, The Four Tops.

[313] Baxter mix?

2002-01-19 Thread Wes
Any opinions on the Blake Baxter Globus mix that came out on Tresor a
number of years ago with tracks by Basic Bastard etc. on it?
I'm not a huge fan, but have a definite soft spot for Visions of You
that wicked old track on the Made in Detroit comp. Has this mix stood the
test of time?

Thanks

[313] Trainwrecks/blue notes

2001-11-27 Thread Wes
A while back on the Global Techno list, Max Duley was talking about the
phenomenal energy Mills brought to the tables clubs he played at in the
UK in 94-95, how (like the Liquid Room cd), the mistakes simply
magnified the intensity of an already supercharged atmosphere.

Isn't a trainwreck in the hands of a Mills simply the techno equivalent
of a blue note (in jazz)? The skilled musician's imagination triumphs over
the technician's 'mistake' converts it into a previously unknown sonic
form. Any slip always has the potential to be so much more in the right
hands. Chance + ingenuity = dynamic tension.

Re: [313] Jeff Mills Every Dog Has His Day CD

2001-11-22 Thread Wes
Well, that's a little harsh though you're entitled to your opinion. The
cover notes for Every Dog Has Its Day state that the music is designed to
ease impatience and restlessness, but I guess it doesn't work for
everyone in some programatic way. What about Now is the Time? How
anyone can describe that as an example of lazy production is beyond me.
Is it because the vocals sound improvised the structure is rather
free-form? Not sure what vol. that track was on--have you listened to it?

Not to take the wind out of your sails, but I found Every Dog... vol. 2 (the

who loved the Other Day and Metropolis I can't help feeling that perhaps the
title reveals some of the intention behind the compilation(s) - giving each
dog of a track a day to be spun. hmmm...
