The collection, entitled Electrevival, is comprised of two exclusive tracks as well as three new versions of previously released material. Speaking on his website in an official statement, Carl says that the most important thing I want you to do is ENJOY it! Some of these songs are new, some are not. But ALL of them represent various points in my life and careerthe different paths I've chosen, where I came from, where I'm going... You get the point. Of the new tracks featured, one is a remix of If There Is a Heaven by fellow Detroit residents Ican, whilst the other is a hip-hop collaboration with relative unknown Humility's Hand. Backed by new versions of Aaron-Carl's bona fide anthems Tears and Down, the collection is an insightful look into the work of the stalwart producer, who has previously released on labels such as Metroplex, Subject Detroit and Mahogani Music. Re: (313) New Recloose
That Petone gig sounds like it had some fine chemistry between the players. He's playing soon with his full 8-piece live band at a little club in the heart of K Rd here in Auckland, 4:20. What about the pleasures of musical humour/irony he's stylistically mining in the new material on this album? I'm trying to think of other Detroit techno/electro acts who arguably might do the tongue-in-cheek thing apparent in 'Perfect Timing' compared to say other eras. First thought of the DGP, Aux 88, Gary Martin...anyway, here's more of Matt's thoughts from the interview: It is kind of a joke. The thing is, you listen to it and the whole album isn't an '80s funk record. There are definitely three, four, maybe five tunes that are influenced by that era. Think about it, those songs that influenced it ['Perfect Timing'] had to be taken with a grain of salt as well, cause they're pretty ridiculous. Look at Prince, look at the sh*t he's wearing, or what he used to wear. You think you're meant to take that dude totally seriously? No! There is a bit of irony going on there, Parliament, all of it. There is definitely somewhat of a comedic element going on. Re: (313) new recloose album
I've heard some of it -- superb stuff. Here's a review from the local paper: Recloose: Perfect Timing By Rebecca BarryHerald rating: * * * * Dance music may not be as fashionable these days but those still into its jazzy, funky strains will find loads of good times on the fourth album from Matt Chicoine. The Detroit native, who settled in New Zealand seven years ago, has been embraced as part of the local music scene, defying his name with music designed for socialising. A song like Deeper Waters, with Joe Dukie, Warren Maxwell and members of Fat Freddys Drop shows Recloose can balance the techy sound of his homeland with the laidback vibe of Aotearoa. No, it's not quite perfect timing for a release that could have been a summer slammer five years ago. But Recloose will revive your taste for noodly, bottom-heavy party tunes. Steeped in late 70s, early 80s funk, and coloured with bongos, brass and squelching Moog keys, it's a beautifully produced album that pays exquisite attention to detail, whether it's his consistently inventive beats, fun, spacey effects or clever use of vocal talent. And damn, he knows how to get his groove on, from the punchy nu-jazz of Can It Be, the deeply funky So Cool with Tyna, or the skittish Emotional Funk. Even when the lyrics are no more than a doo-doot-doo motif (Soloman's Alive) you'll find it difficult to sit still, which is just as well as he's about to set out on national tour with his band. You can hear the influence of Robert Hood et al. on some tracks, but he invariably does his own jacking minimal thing with it to great effect. http://www.discogs.com/release/1076 The remix of Kenny Larkin's Loop 2 he did for RS deserves special mention as well for its timeless funk killer strings. http://www.discogs.com/release/25993 --- Wes http://www.soundworker.net On 10/18/06 7:32 PM, David Gillies [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Cyclone Wehner wrote: Luke Slater can be a bit hit or miss for me, but I have to say I always loved his Wireless album - some very eerie sounds, very space documentary. I definitely wasn't feeling his last electro project, though I'm not adverse to some of the new pop electro (love Kelley Polar, Goldfrapp, etc) I'm not a huge Slater fan, but I agree, Wireless is a pretty cool album. Re: (313) Oliver Ho
Ho's music has a real sense of history embedded in its grooves, like a lot of the best Detroit techno. Some real mental energy spirit to complement the sensuality of the rhythms. That inner track flowing on from the Pure mix of Magick (Meta 19) always slays me with its sampled voiceover: I go with my feelings, you know, I love music...the only thing that makes me play continue (in) this business is my love for music. Sounds a bit like Miles in a good mood. Anyone have any idea who Ho's sampling here? http://www.discogs.com/release/252723 Wes

Re: (313) UR
It's also worth remembering that Mike Banks (like K. Larkin, S. Stoll, J. Hendrix) is an ex-armed services man who has chosen to wage war on oppression, injustice exploitation using alternate means which appear inconsequential to the unknowing unwitting. At the risk of stating the obvious, politics music remain inseparable in his book. UR's reaction to the bootlegger problem can't be divorced from the ongoing struggle to prevent George Orwell's vision from becoming the all-encompassing reality: The future of mankind is a jackboot stomping endlessly on a human face. UR has determined it will kick back, right to the bitter end. On Mon, 14 Apr 2003, Cyclone Wehner wrote: OK, I think I understand the context of this now. I think it's kinda a hip-hop way of expressing it, appropriating terms like 'shock and awe'. It's ironic, flipping terms to get people's attention and make them think. I would be surprised if UR supported this current conflict, com'on. But some 'wars' are necessary - struggles for self-determination, justice, equality, etc - and I am as pacifist as anyone. War here is figurative, it could be as much about people power on the streets or campaigning Sony as with the Jaguar 'cover'. UR have a compelling point on the bootlegging. Bootlegging affects their ability to run a business and look out for their families - and so achieve self-determination. I think KDJ has been very, very, very misunderstood. People shouldn't take it so personally, unless they're bootleggers! I think you'll find he just supports all people who keep it real and realness has no colour. Haven't really followed this thread, as I have been off for a while, but I am sure it's figurative, as is a lot of UR's music and imagery. Probably more a reference to The Struggle - civil rights, African-Americans, Indigenous peoples, working class, women... self-determination, equality, etc. It's there to make you think? While I do not support the rip-off, I think the footer message War when necessary sucks big time. Peace in the good times/War when necessary. What defines necessity. If the US economic situation continues to deteriorate does this necessatate enforcing control through trigger happy kick ass advanced technology toting red-necks - know what I'm sayin'?

Can't remember anyone mentioning Jonny L's darkly evocative track, Detroit, off his album 'Sawtooth'. Carl Craig remixed one of his earlier singles as well: This Time, on XL, wasn't it? L is one of the select few who could be mentioned in the same breath as Photek, IMHO, though he seems to have dropped off a bit during the last few years. Kraftwerk live the other night were devastatingly powerful. Slater finished his set with some of that overwhelmingly stringladen FSOL stuff off 'Lifeforms' (though there could have been some Orb in there as well). Then it was all on, non-stop, the 4 greying, grey-clad laptoppers pumping out the classics: Numbers, Pocket Calculator, the new UR/Rolando re/remix of Expo 2000, Neon Lights, Autobahn, TEE, Radioactivity etc. all the way through to Musique... as an encore. Best track was probably Tour de France though there really wasn't a weak moment bar the fact they left out Computer Love :-( Superb visuals clinical perfection all round, and defiantly uncompromising (in contrast to the crowd-pleasing antics of Underworld, who followed.) Best moment: getting caught up, with 5000 others, in the irresistible electro funkiness of Expo as the Detroit...Germany: Soul Electric refrain filled the pavilion. New Yorker Steve Stoll's album on Fine Audio, 'Windows on the World' (named after the ill-fated tower-top restaurant) comes to mind. Gaiden's 'Walking on Wires' (Music Man) was dedicated to the 9/11 victims as well, if memory serves. Gigolo artist Chris Korda's track 'I Like To Watch' (www.churchofeuthanasia.org) is about the only techno response to 9/11, which is also the date he's intending to release it. Sample quote: I don't think we realized what we were really doing [...] We just followed our passion and it turned into something. And that's normally the way it happens. Good things happen because they're not thought out, they're just spontaneously combusted. Nobody was monitoring us. Ask about the re-release of all the wonderful Wackies material with which they're currently heavily involved, how BC continues to tie in with Rhythm Sound. Who else from the Jamaican pantheon of reggae singers players might they collaborate with in the future? Any chance of more remixes of Carl Craig material (a la Climax, Quadrant)? Well, right...Durutti Column hardly carried the urban funk terrorist flag in the manner of Skidoo! But I also mentioned ACR, where there is the obvious label connection with DC. As for things in common, let's just say Skidoo, ACR, DC were each breaking new ground in their own right, creating classics never bettered by their later recordings. They each cut first, cut deep. Hence we can talk about them in the same breath as among the leading pioneers/innovators of cutting-edge music during that dark, distant time. Must check out that compilation you mentioned earlier. Re: [313] dave angel djing (was Re: [313] Dave Angel mixtape ID needed)
I think it depends on the venue crowd what kind of set he spins. DA has a versatile range. For example, he says this new 'Trust the DJ' mix cd, DA-01, represents his more clubby style he plans to release another 3 mix comps. this year. They'll presumably show off the remaining strings to his bow. The DA-01 mix features producers like Francois Lauren, Mr. G, The Reaver, Nick Holder, Sebastian Leger, The Ambush, Francesco Pico, DJ Sandy Vs Sinesweeper, Redhead, and Bryan Zentz amongst others. Plenty of superb DA reworks, plus a few by Jamie Anderson. A really well compiled, energy-filled set, though damn expensive to buy here in Canada. Don't forget the several Synewave New York comps. they released (Damon Wild's label), the whole Techno Nations series Vols. 1-8, which often featured exclusive tracks Detroit artists. Just looking at Vol. 7, with tracks by Drexciya (Depressurization) Claude Young/Twine (Scarred). There was a second Elements of Jazz cd as well, though not quite as stellar as the first if memory serves. That Dave Angel track Lagoon slams on a good system. Re: [313] p-funk
A couple of years ago Derrick May took a turn at The Wire's Invisible Jukebox. He listened tried to identify tracks by Herbie Hancock, Olly Wilson, First Choice, Dade Krama, UR, Kraftwerk, Depeche Mode, Ice Cube, A Guy Called Gerald (one of the unsung heroes of future music), The Williams Fairey Brass Band (Acid Brass version of Strings...) Last track up was Funkadelic's (Not Just) Knee Deep, from Uncle Jam Wants You (Warners). Here's a transcription of what followed: DM: Hell, yeah! [Starts singing along] You can go to Detroit now and this stuff is still on rotation on the radio. This is a big part of my youth. M. Shallcross: So is this your favourite track from today's selection? DM: Yeah, everything else is kind of okey-doke. I wouldn't mind playing this at a party now, just to see what happens. I've heard Rob Hood play this, but I don't think he played enough of it. MS: Your famous and somewhat over-repeated equation for Techno was 'Kraftwerk and George Clinton meeting in an elevator'. Does Techno sometimes forget its funk roots? DM: Yes, I think so. It was never meant to be just about technology. It was the sound of man and machine making love. I would love to see Kraftwerk and George Clinton on the same stage, playing one after another. That would be cool. I'm still looking out for something like this today. Re: [313] Juan Atkins - then having a break
Nobody is denying the fact that Black artists like Juan or Stacey have had a raw deal when it comes to gaining anything like widespread commercial acceptance with their particular brand of techno--you're preaching to the converted there, I'm afraid. Going unrecognized in one's homeland is part of the price all artists whose work proves ahead of its time must pay, like it or not. At least we support their cause by buying their material turning people on to it whenever possible. In terms of true activism the creation of what Pullen calls thinking machines, impassioned music will always speak louder than impassioned words. Venting one's spleen in a self-righteous attempt to blame the woes of some Black techno artists _solely_ on race can appear a little reductive has caused a few firestorms on the list (mea culpa!) You may choose to disagree, but things are usually vastly more complex than they appear on the surface, over-simplified arguments (beguiling as they may be), are often alienating to others and the kiss of death to (constructive) dialogue. [313] Trainwrecks/blue notes
A while back on the Global Techno list, Max Duley was talking about the phenomenal energy Mills brought to the tables clubs he played at in the UK in 94-95, how (like the Liquid Room cd), the mistakes simply magnified the intensity of an already supercharged atmosphere. Isn't a trainwreck in the hands of a Mills simply the techno equivalent of a blue note (in jazz)? The skilled musician's imagination triumphs over the technician's 'mistake' converts it into a previously unknown sonic form. Any slip always has the potential to be so much more in the right hands. Well, that's a little harsh though you're entitled to your opinion. The cover notes for Every Dog Has Its Day state that the music is designed to ease impatience and restlessness, but I guess it doesn't work for everyone in some programatic way. What about Now is the Time? How anyone can describe that as an example of lazy production is beyond me. Is it because the vocals sound improvised the structure is rather free-form?
