Glad you liked it :) Now for a spot of shameless self-promotion... The record was charted at #1 by Dave Clarke last month (in his electro chart) and has been doing quite well - anyone who's interested in grabbing a copy can do so from the following places: http://www.juno.co.uk/IP/IF147606-01.htm (UK/Europe) and http://www.djnexus.com/main_view.cfm/a/114979/Non%20Stop%20DJs (US) There are sound samples on both sites, and more info about the release on our own site: http://www.non-stop-djs.com/ . The survey looks like they are looking for ways to justify state/council funding and/or sponsorships. I.e we brought X $ to the local economy therefore its worth your while keep us running type thing. upwards of 500 euros for plane tix. LOL if only it were that cheap from here! with costs well over 1k euros from australia. First i want to know i'm going to get into the country and then secondly that a party is actually going be happening. A line up is important well well in advance. I'm not bagging the Movement, good on mr May and Co for such an excellent effort and im sorry i couldnt go. I'm just adding to others comments. Could there be a possibility of artists paying for stages if they don't already or charging for entry? I mean if i'm paying all that money of a stupid air-fare what is a bit extra to guarantee and event happens? The timing issue is so important when you have a scaled festival like this, with such large out of town support. People in europe want to know they aren't throwing away their money before they spend upwards of 500 euros for plane tix. Even on top of that, the line-up wasn't even anounced until the week before the festival, which kept alot of the parties /people from being able to plan around it. I was talking to Mike from Threads, and he said that usually he gets a stream of customers during DEMF weekend, that is larger than his xmas crowd, but this year was just like a normal week for him. Just been watching FK. He seems to have a go at everything i thought, just been glued to to the video. Bit of CD's i thought, vinyl definately and the laptop a lot. Looks like technical hell i would have thought but he seems to manage it, not quite sure how, i mean he's mousing the speed of tracks on the laptop to mix into the vinyl. Great track selection going on there, you can here his production skills coming through in way he mixes. Very classy set, only 1 cliche 'hits and memories track' the rest nice an minimal and quite obscure and very electronic. I'll pay to see this any day. I've even seen some contracts for as little as 6 months :^) after the agreed upon time the artist/owner (licensee) is free to do with the master recordings what he or she wants in all territories (re-release, remix, re-license to someone else, bury in a landfill in Arizona). there are many other legal stipulations to licensing but I only mean to address why there is no need for Carl to bootleg this compilation. sean deason: contract killer

Don't know this track but i like 'sleeper in metropolis', i dig the whole raw electronics and poetry type thing - i think cold/dark wave it might be called. I've heard loads of stories that are pretty interesting. You therefore have no sense of change in your environment other than your inner sense of space and/or time, and so in an limited sense these things cease to exist. Philosophically I call this a 'white room' scenario, actually a very interesting situation which highlights certain things about how we perceive and know anything at all. So there! Peace, Andrew

(313) Detroit equipment (was do you*)
I beg to differ in you saying 727 is OT . I think what you are mentioning is the true essence of detroit music- Classics like roland 101,303,808, 909 and 727. Yes i was going to say dreamfish- an old favourite of mine, even if some of those sounds used were abused by nameless commercial offerings elsewhere and later. On that subject of Apollo does anyone know where i can get a copy of Model 500 - the passage on vinyl? When you have a site that gets nailed as much as CBS did, (OK, for a relatively small outfit such as those guys ran), you can bet there servers were getting a decent amount of of downloads and streams, all that fun stuff. So I'm thankful CBS lasted as long as it did, and maybe it will be revived someday. If not, maybe people can fan those awesome mixes out through the usual underground channels :) I-f has always had a flair for the dramatic, (esp. with announcements, public diss of Hell, etc.) but in true form he's still a major force in shaping underground dance music in his own dark wayl... and we're lucky to have him around in any capacity, IMHO. I have learned so so so much from Cybernetic Broadcast Systems and even before that the mixes he'd post from old crazy Intergalactic Gary tape edit mixes and italo fetishist stuff. and about italo being dead, or overblown, what!? pah!!If it ain't dead yet after 20+ years of weirdo collectors scouring it all.. it's not going to just up and die anytime soon.. I'd say by comparison, 'glitch' is rapidly approaching the terminally ill/boring stage, but that's just me :P If Italo (or whatever electro/disco variant you want to call it) gets more popular, it's just going to make the old school headz like Ferenc stronger and more of a Don in the end. And even if it blows up more, he'll keep burrowing deeper underground and cold-press some hard clear musical gemstones under all that pressure, while the rest of us Cocadisco the rest of the HOTT nights away.. I was just reading this article about Chip E who said italo was what the house guys were trying to copy/sample in early chicago jackin trax stuff, it was as much a blueprint to some of those guys as disco percussion was. So it's not like influences that important ever just evaporate or suddenly become uncool. People just stop making high profile CD compilations of it ;)It disappears into the mist of history. It appears as a backbeat, buried deep inside of a Purpose Maker track (I Remember). Shari Vari was a reply/answer to Kano's Holly Dolly! It all comes full circle, it's a snake eating it's tail and then puking up something better. In the big picture, Italo is a tiny tiny part of electronic dance music that most people who say they like Techno or House aren't even that familiar with.. so there's still lots of room for it's influences to keep sprouting new stuff. Ferenc is in many ways the flashpoint for a lot of that exposure, or at least championing it mightily in his own tracks and DJ sets. Speaking of new italo, some of those new Pigna records coming out of Italy are hot!! The Francisco tracks, and the Raiders of The Lost Arp tracks especially,, warm electronic dance techno, chugging analog basslines, top beats and beautiful electro melodies, count me in.. also you could argue the $tinkworx and Macho Cat Garage / Legowelt and etc. etc. are all connected in some way to that era... it's definitely living on. have i made utterly no sense yet?? Anyway, respect to I-f! whatever his reasons i think it's silly to just publicly speculate on what *might* have been his reasons.. hell it's his prerogative and I'm sure we've not seen the last of that madman... that you can bet on for sure. like william devaughn said: Be thankful for what you got! -- Matt MacQueen http://SonicSunset.com

RE: (313) Ableton Live mixes
It seems one of many limitations of ableton, correct me if im wrong but these things irk me as these are things i automatically expected to be able to do. This is what you can't do: play mp3's be able to mix without having to put stupid markers into all tracks (unless its like banging 4/4) use both audo no midi play virtual instrument plugins I dont know who has time to put markers on all mp3 tracks especally with the clumbsy marker controls in ableton, not me. RE: (313) warprecords
i suppose if you are using final scratch to DJ its good to have reliable high quality rips, also some sites let you just download each track from am album so you don't end up with fillers kicking around, for 1$ its not much to pay if you only need 1 track. On that matter i never understand why people press albums like this anyway or 12vs. Why not put 100% good tracks on each release then people wouldn't question about buying releases or your labels. Quality controls are bad on a lot of labels although things are changing with stuff like downlow and pigna etc. Its good that now the market will change and now people will have to release good stuff as fillers just wont sell. I'm hoping more underground stuff goes the way of digital distribution. For us her in australia its getting to $$ to ship, wait and hope compared with having almost instantly. I would be buying if stuff if it is available. Someone mentioned it is too early for mp3 dj's, i disagree totally the djing is totally split now with FS and not FS dj's. There is just no way to compete with a dj with 10 days of selection and custom remixes, especially when you need to lug a huge box around and risk stuff being stolen. Things have changed already and there is no way to stop it,i think its a case of join in or loose out. Oh and another note- all those rare records you own that only got 100 releases well 2000 people have these now and can dj them, its easy to angry about this but i think there is now way to win the fight. RE: (313) warprecords
Maybe im exaggerating a bit but my point i think is still valid. Actually thinking about it more, when cd's arrived everyone claimed the end of vinyl. Now maybe i fell for this for a bit, but not too long. Probably because there was still too many limitations for cd's to make them 100% okay for djs. IE: availability of new releases, pretty sleeves, easy of djing, street cred value etc. Now that things like FS exist it is really a further extension of the progression into digital that cd's failed to deliver to dj's. This time it is more irresistible because of speed of delivery, potential quality (can be higher then cd's), street cred value (laptop dj's) still look impressive :) and price. Quest Pond -Original Message- From: Odeluga, Ken [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Thursday, 15 January 2004 12:40 PM To: Quest Pond; [EMAIL PROTECTED]; 313@hyperreal.org Subject: RE: (313) warprecords Oh and another note- all those rare records you own that only got 100 releases well 2000 people have these now and can dj them, its easy to angry about this but i think there is now way to win the fight. Quest Pond (Hey Quest!) This last point I can't quite see. - A major point about p2p etc is that on the whole, whilst they may have a wide range of tracks for download - in the areas in which we on this list are interested - the quality of such rips is generally not high, therefore whilst those '2000' djs (nominal number I know mate) might now have that rare track which you had to become a private detective to track down and a mortgage to buy, until 'legitimate' downloading services (like iTunes for instance) catch-up with the really specialist end, I can't see that FS, Traktor, Ableton etc folks have got the edge in our little area - unless they actually own the original vinyl ... I feel the real competition will start from people like iTunes when they ratchet up the sampling rate to 32 and even beyond. It will simply not be feasible I feel, for your soulseeks and limewires and kazaas to match that - at least for a while ... k

RE: (313) Techno clubs in Sydney
HAHA- Welcome to sydney- Yes Home is a complete joke for sure. Anyway forget techno clubs as they dont exist here, but i can say Madd Racket parties are okay for house type music with some detroit flavour sometimes, still i havent been to one for over a year as i've been in the UK. I think Simon's Hindle (list member) pub night on Saturday that Sofie, Simon and I played at would be one of the only techno gigs in town. This is sort of monthly though and not a club night. Other then that you might get the occasional one off parties. Like the ones My friends and I put on, Deepspace. Or maybe an international every now and again maybe one every 2 months. These are usually the same names eg. Herbert,Mills,May,Godfather, Garnier, Mills, May etc, only big 'been here' before 'sure bet' type things. Most people wont turn out on mass for local dj's so international nights are the only alternative. Except for deepspace parties :). The only reguar weekly techno gig 'technical' which closed last week. How long are they around for? Check here for events listings, but i think its pretty shaky at the moment except for big day out and aphex twin. Sydney is Generally pretty conservative in its music tastes and house music rules here. There is an underground movement here but its small at the moment. http://www.inthemix.com.au/whatson/?city=1 Regards, Quest Pond www.deepspace.net.au -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, 13 January 2004 9:25 AM To: 313@hyperreal.org Subject: (313) Techno clubs in Sydney ** Entertainment UK Limited Registered Office: 243 Blyth Road, Hayes, Middlesex UB3 1DN. RE: (313) public life
Hey - thanks for putting on a great night- just so i dont get accused of being a club lurker and list lurker that is me in the #76 blue shirt looking real happy boogying on the dance floor and only after one vodka and cranberry ;). I managed to drag a few friends along who are more into trance music and they were blown away by the music on the night- great selections! and great vibe. Later i made it down to fabric to check out Fabrice Lig, Rolando and Steve Bug- i must say the 313 party was much better then fabric, there seems to be some bad crowd elements at fabric. Fabrice was doing the live thing with percussion accompaniments- very nice to hear this top class music in a commercial club. Rolando was spinning some Detroit classics and Chicago classics but wasn't quite as smoth as I have seen him b4 but still classic tracks. Steve bug was quite amazing for the small bit I heard him, funky as all hell, can't complain about Detroit options in this town. Anyway i will be checking out Ken and Toby's night this weekend at public life as scape1 is playing and because i plan to make the most of the UK before moving back to Sydney next month to help transfer the 313 vibe Sydney side. Nice to see all the 313 londoners again. As Tristan said, the venue was absolutely packed, and the dancefloor responded spectactularly. And to think that, at around 10pm, the venue was practically empty and I'd been seriously expecting the whole party to turn into a complete flop...! The football definitely had an effect on the time people arrived, though, and so only an hour later things were really getting going. I'd probably say that, if there was a point at which the night really kicked off (to stay on the football theme!) it was Matt Chester's devastating set at 11.30pm - the BPM and the volume were cranked up, much to the pleasure of the crowd. I was coming on afterwards and remember being quite worried about how I was going to sustain the energy Matt had built up! But luckily I managed not to completely kill the momentum and the scene was set for the rest of the party - Public Life stuffed full of people, from wall to wall, and each DJ that played dropping both classics and more obscure gems to an extremely responsive crowd. I only wish the night ran longer so that each DJ could have played a longer set; Ken, Dan, Toby, Tristan, Matt and Guy each did an amazing job, accomplishing the feat of delivering a programme of music where the BPM might go up and down over time but the energy on the dancefloor just keeps slowly building. It was also really good to meet even more 313ers who've previously just been names on a screen - big thanks to everyone who was able to make it down, and I hope you enjoyed the night even half as much as I did. I fully accept my half of the blame for the recording mess-up, of course, and I also have some of Tristan's adapters and a copy of someone's record to return (who lost a Network EP?). But it was very encouraging to see the 313 massive show its stuff in such spectacular fashion, to echo Tristan once again - and just *who* says the Detroit techno scene is on its last legs??? ;) We've got some photos from the night as well, which will be going online imminently. Thanks once again, to everyone who came down, and particularly to all of the DJs! I'm looking forward to the next one already! Unfortunately last time i saw him playing in Sydney expecting him to dig out 'garden in the palm' and 'Pneuma' style stuff, he bludgeoned me to boredom with 4/4 average house music instead. Does he always do this? Another legend disappoints... Fantastic news Martin good on you. Can i please make one suggestion to improve on overload- can you please separate or allow to sort the club night/event listings by some criteria IE location and/or date. I and others that are geographically challenged (not my fault im Australian) have trouble finding event listings quickly or at all. The site will run on it's own with dust playing no other part than paying the bills... We have a new URL, Loads of disk space and enough bandwidth to almost be pornographic! RE: (313) Excuse my ignorance... pad sound?
I hate to bring this up but i totally disagree with Rob, I think too many interview are non technical. This might be quite controversial but I see little point about asking producers about the weather, politics and the club scene. Might it be the case that the main source of inspiration is racks full of funky analog equipment? Or a mad sound made by feedback loops? What is important is the music and how they made it, not what colour underwear they have. Personally i want equipment and methods, am i the only one who feels like this? RE: (313) Excuse my ignorance... pad sound?
Okay Rob - I apologise for being defensive. I like the techy speak in reviews, but it is not for everyone you are right. These reviewers need to walk a fine line here. Really my point is slightly related though really about interviews. I do think there should be more emphasis on the music and equipment and less on lifestyle in interviews with producers, I'm interested to see if anyone else agrees. RE: (313) jeff mills at lost yesterday + free mix
Lost was pretty cool night no doubt, great atmosphere, better venue then heaven, except for one thing. I was dancing around then i saw Jeff on the screen, went closer to the front and noticed he was actually wearing a different shirt to the video. The music was in time with the video and fader movements, so wtf was happening at the decks? Where they even on? Was that even Jeff there? At that point i and others felt cheated and just left. Now i knew nothing about this DVD thing, but as far as im concerned its just cheating and being *^*^* lazy. Why didn't they just put up a cardboard cut-out and play a DAT tape? At a guess, the pots that control the voltages for the pitch might have been coroded or loose giving a poor connection which could cause inconsistant voltage and hence speed for the slider. RE: (313) 313 Weekend in London
I think both dj's who only play techno and dj's who mix it are both valid approaches. Its just a style thing and this is some dj's style and they are good at it and can get away with it while some dj's i would prefer to hear play techno all night because this is what they play best. Neither is wrong, and really i can enjoy both just depending on what i feel like. I think the important thing is going to see a DJ's interpretation of the music and as long as its done tastefully and i'm in the mood for it then fine by me. Also techno doesn't haven't to be all 4/4 tyranny, there does exist techno without 4/4 beats. One more spanner in the works here-maybe peoples interpretation of dance music and or techno can differ from their exposure depending on their age and locality so its going to be impossible to come to a general consensus. Its all good if its good. Quest

RE: (313) Here we go....
Start by trimming off the excess bits of vinyl around the label. This bit is mostly useless and contains wavy lines and fuzzy noise. Next you need to boost your laser power of the cd player to read the new cd sized vinyl as its denser then normal cd. Try maybe 500Volts instead of the usual 240v for your cd player. Now your you can place the vinyl in the cd player and its ready to play no problem Quest -Original Message- From: Data General [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Thursday, May 01, 2003 5:21 PM To: Grammenos, Peter Cc: 'Rob Theakston'; 313 list Subject: RE: (313) Here we go yeah? name one. RE: (313) Juan at Lost
Juan didn't play techno that i noticed - it was more deepish house in keeping with what alex mentioned and pretty similar style to the last two sets i heard him play - one in Sydney and another in Grenoble last year. Sounded very tight. Rob hood was very hard playing lots of his own stuff, techno no mistaking this. At one point he mellowed out and dropped some old Djax like Majic Feet which was a highlight but then soon after back to 4*4 banging. Actually come to think of it i spent more time upstairs as Mr Weatherall was playing some storming electro. Detroit, dutch and UK mixed all up. All up a fantastic selection of music. RE: (313) Online record shopping
Personally i have order and can recommend: www.vinylunderground.co.uk www.smallfish.co.uk www.formic.de and www.clone.nl. I have always wanted to use nuloop but the totally outrageous shipping cost makes it impossible. I have used groovetech in the past because they have great deals on shipping but if possible i would always support the independents. I find these stores have a good selection but i mostly order electro and a bit of older Detroit. I haven't ordered from rushhour but the instore selection of house music is quite tasty. A good BK selection is a nice bonus, but I value an up-to-date stock list most. http://www.planetxusa.com is decent. There's an indicator next to each record showing how likely it is to be in stock, and Real Audio samples of just about everything. The site works best in IE (certain things go flaky in Phoenix/Mozilla). My only complaint about them is that they don't seem as personalized as they were a couple years ago. They used to surprise me with random promo records, posters, t-shirts and the like (much as Submerge is known to do), but ever since they went Internet-only there's been less and less of that. I mean, yeah, it's not like I can complain about not getting free swag, but it's definitely one of the things that will keep me going back for more. - Brian balistic Prince http://www.bprince.com - art and techno Strokes of Defiance EP . . . soon.

He really had the crowd enjoying themselves here in Detroit when he rolled through for the Ghostly International party celebrating the release of the excellent Disco Nouveau. I was stunned and very delighted to see the hardcore elite of the D singing along with don't you want me baby, don't you want me o? and slow dancing to Prince at the end of the night. Ed himself was fun to watch because when the spirit moved him and he really was feeling the tune, off came the headphones and he'd do the disco shuffle from side to side in the booth with his long hair exploding in motion around him and his fine, green sports tee (was it a Saucony?) At any rate, I'm jealous and would love to go to this event. For free no less. If you have the chance, don't miss it. Don't expect too much from him, i have seen ritchie about 4 or more times and he is nothing like he used to be. I even went to melbourne on nye 2 years ago just for this gig and loved it. I Saw him in sydney on wednesday and he played really boring and dare i say almost progressive bouncy loop techno and not even the good stuff. He went quite hard on the chiche mid range sweeps on the allen and heath mixer. Since when did ritchie hawtin smile??? What is going on? too much ibiza? This is Kraftwerk (as in Kraftwerk 1) not 2. Went to see this record dealer the other week and, apart from picking up a 12 of Shannon 'Let The Music Play' for just £2 (bargain!), I bought a mint copy of 'Kraftwerk 2' for £4 (another bargain!). Or at least, I thought I did: when I got the record home and pulled out the vinyl, I noticed that the tracklisting on the centre sticker didn't match that on the album sleeve. Instead of 'Klingklang' etc, I have a 4-tracker on Philips with 'Ruckzuck', 'Stratovarius', 'Megaherz' and 'Vom Himmel Hoch', all credited to Ralf Hutter and Florian Schneider-Esteban. So the question is, what the hell have I got here? And does anyone have any background info on the record? (He sells via the web and had a couple more copies left if anyone's interested - mail me for contact info). 2. Has anyone heard Gayle San's record on Black Nation? I, like many others I suspect, had her down as a known trance offender, but I'll hazard a wild guess that this record isn't trance if it's on BNR. So what's it like? BTW, the Dedbeat weekender was fantastic - I'll post a review sometime this week. Anyone else from the list make it?
