tuneintuition:

Has anyone done any sick Bjork remixes that could be used in
a techno/electro set... not that Homogenic isn't dancefloor,
but maybe something more clearcut made specifically for our
 pleasure.

the LFO (Mark Bell) remixes of Hyperballad are a possibility,
particularly the Stomp remix, and for something a bit calmer Plaid's
gorgeous remix of All Is Full Of Love is an option. i don't know that
i'd describe either as sick, but they're top quality remixes by class
acts.

ASIDE: I remember Heckle and Jeckle dropping a Radiohead
techno/electro remix at Forans [@ Bump] awhile back - anyone
 know what that was?

it might've been the original version of Idioteque off of Kid A?

expensive given that i may need a couple of dozen.

i'm sure this has been brought-up before - iirc Mr Tom had some

(313) lost talent

2003-02-07 Thread rob webb

Alex:

1) Lee Grainge - I pulled out those 2 human records the other day. They're
great. Why did they stop? A shame
2) Lee Insync - Great DJ, great producer.
3) Matt Cogger - Barely mentioned, yet some of his tracks were awesome.
'Facility Junction' was a staple fave at our club for a long while...

I was thinking about this the other day, I guess as we all know money is
tight in this 'scene', so I guess they might have just lost all their
enthusiasm. Or their marbles/money. A shame, some real talent there.

i haven't seen Lee Grainge in ages but last i heard he was no longer working
in Smallfish and was doing a sound production / engineering / technology
course. his tracks have moved in a different direction - mostly
experimental, dark, dubby soundscapes, one of which was released (under the
pseudonym Soundtree) on Smallfish's label. i don't know if he dj's much
nowadays, but i'm sure i recall him doing a few live sets as Soundtree.

other lost (and / or dormant) talent:

B12. unfortunately, i think spending hours tweaking a few electronic boxes
in order to sell a few thousand records kinda lost it's appeal when decent
jobs and families came along.

Art Forrest. whatever happened to him? The Flow is an absolute timeless
classic!

Dave Peoples. the Vigilante crew never seem to have had the attention they
perhaps deserved, imho.

Walt Jones. how solid a label was Dow? the last release, Endow (i'm
assuming it's by Walt J) which came out back in '99, is amazing minimal
house - kinda like a prototype Playhouse record.

last but not least, Kenny Larkin!

...and the list goes on.

(313) interesting stuff - KDJ, Red Planet, UR, Footwork, RjD2

2002-11-21 Thread rob webb

Alex:

So, anyone got any interesting stuff to tell us or what?!

non-313:

the RjD2 album, Deadringer, is worth investigating if you're remotely into
hiphop. picked it up on Saturday on a whim, and mighty fine it is too!

313:

the new Moodyman 12 is quite nice. i can take-or-leave much of KDJ's
stuff, but i heard some samples of I'm Doing Fine online this week and i
think it's a definite maybe. ;)

some interesting goings-on at Submerge. looks like there's a new Red Planet
on it's way - #11 Revenge of the Wolf - plus a Red Planet associated book
Understanding the Connection between Black and Aboriginal Peoples.
there's also something which looks suspiciously like another
reissue/replacement release on UR - Dark Energy Dark Paradise 12 (listed
as UR-031, which used to be the Dark Energy doublepack!).

if you're into wicked Detroit-style (electro and techno-tinged) house then
keep your eyes peeled for a label called Footwork Records. the label's
London-based, but the guys who run it are closely affiliated with Detroit's
IS12 collective. due out sometime around now is an ep from Detroit's
AudioMatriX, House Ballads Part Two (Part One was produced by Mark Flash
and was the 2nd ep on Footwork), and an ep by Louis Digital, The Crack-Up.
i think Groovetech have some samples, so head down there and have a listen
if you're interested.

...and that's about it for now.

Re: (313) interesting stuff - Footwork, Stuff

2002-11-21 Thread rob webb

JT:

yes the first 12 on footwork was pretty nice too, by louis digital, had a
really stripped-down homemade peaches-n-cream remix, and a couple nice
house tracks. that mark flash one (the second footwork) was godawful but i
guess that just means i'm not a mark flash fan...0 subtletly..definitely
excited to hear the new ones tho!

the new Louis Digital definitely shows a progression from the first one, and
the AMX 12 is really good too imho! i'm not sure what's happening with
their website, but as i said before Groovetech has some samples anyways.

also check out this new label from Glasgow with it's first release next
week - Stuff Records, vaguely affiliated (i think?) with the guys from
Rub-a-Dub (and redshift, who i think is on the list?) ...the first ep is a
various artists ep full of totally crazy chit, from drexciyan electro to
wigged out japanese hiphop-idm, straight-up rb remixes(!?) etc...they
clearly dont care about making genre records and there is some cool stuff
on there..they have a website, incomplete now but very soon complete at:

http://www.stuffrecords.co.uk
and a soundbite:
http://www.stuffrecords.co.uk/audiobank/truffleclub.mp3

cool, nice heavy funky Mary J remix!

as well as that Mary J remix (The Truffle Club Perculatin') the Stuff ep
also features a track from Marcia Blaine School for Girls whose 12 on
Dalraida is superb downtempo melodic electronica, and one by Redshift who's
last ep on Surface Effect i really liked n'all (reminded me of early
UR/RedPlanet electro)... and as it happens Warp have the Stuff ep in stock
so i think i'll snag one shortly, along with a copy of Twoism!!! :)

rob

ps: is it the same Redshift (signs emails as Joe i think?) who's on this
list? i always assumed Redshift was a Scot or based in Scotland, mainly cos
of the Rub-a-dub association.

it sounds like maybe an edited (or praps re-recorded) version of Max and
Nick's set from Public Life as iirc the plug was accidentally pulled at one
stage and there's no sign of that on the mp3. anyways, there are some cool
tracks on the mp3 Max! i'm looking forward to hearing some of them on wax.

regarding the recording/encoding of the other sets i don't have copies of
anything myself. afaik Nic (Larsen) has them.

Nic - any news on the mp3's?

Is the Daniel Bell more in a housier way or in his old bleepy style??

Dan's remix is lush deep house, with a few classic quirky DBX touches.
v.v.nice track. John Tejada's remix is cool funky techno. 2 quality
remixes, and definitely a record to look out for!

a coupla other records came in the mail yesterday morning (thanks Juno!):
Shake's new 12 on Seventh City, and the aforementioned Moves 12.

Shake's 12 is pretty good, if not his best imho. the tracks have got a
wicked disjointed funk feel, with beats flying around all over the joint.
the record feels like a cross between the 12 he did on Klang, Mr Shakir's
Beat Store, and the various Frictional Beat tracks he's released on
Frictional.

i wouldn't want to over-generalise, but in essence Moves is more of the
same Metro Area style discoid house from Mr Geist. if you're into that
style, and i am, then this record's for you!

most of Super_Collider, but
I didn't really dig what I heard at the end. The screening of Metropolis
was v.good. In order to appreciate
the CD, I think you have to watch the film with the music. I enjoyed it
thoroughly, and it posed
the question of how tough it must have been to create a soundtrack that
didn't get too Vangelis-like, i.e
just lots of atmospherics. Robot Replica makes a lot more sense now.

spot on Toby, i thought Metropolis was excellent too - Mills' soundtrack
matches the flow and mood of the film really well. it's difficult to know
what to make of his dj set afterwards. on one level it kicked, but on
another i found to be a bit samey - other than Jupiter Jazz it was an
hour's worth of hardish techno. a bit more variety would've been good, but
then again would the crowd've been into that? it's like the DE9 cds... i
find myself uncontrolably bobbing along to the music, even tho it's also
kinda boring. guess that's the 4/4 for you. hmmm.

as for Matthew Herbert - imho he puts on a great show, but as far as the
music's concerned i'd rather hear a Herbert set than a Radioboy one.

i quite enjoyed Super_Collider, and it looked like they were into it
themselves. as Marc said their performance used some v.creative visuals,
and the tracks themselves were pretty cool - loads of heavy funky bass. i
wasn't too impressed by their first lp, so it'll be interesting to hear how
the new one sounds.

That Tim Barr used to be the editor? of a magazine in England, the name of

long article on Robert Hood for it and shortly after they went bust, and I
don't think he ever got paid for it. He was an excellent journalist though,
if only because there were only a couple of people in England at the time
(Magic Feet was just starting too) pushing some of the 2nd/3rd wave
Detroit guys into the media, and he was probably the most high profile guy,
so therefore his articles were always a couple of pages long, and, of
course I was fascinated to read anything about anyone from Detroit.

is Generator the magazine you mention? it's shame that one went belly-up...
aside from your mate not getting paid, as you say Generator used to give a
pretty decent amount of coverage to techno, and Detroit techno in
particular.

Any remixes of this in the works or already out there?

Carl's done a Paperclip People remix of A Different Feeling. there are
promos of it doing the rounds, but i've not heard it myself and i've no idea
if or when it'll be officially released.

rob

ps: i agree, Since I Left You is a cool lp! it's original - no-one else
sounds like The Avalanches - and is a bit like a musical scrapbook, using so
many varied samples to such great effect.

Tim Maughan:

sorry, but i've heard the avalances LP. to my ear its no more revolutionary
than anything Moby has done. bland watered down trip hop nonsense for
marketing execs.

don't mince your words now... say what you really think. seeing as your
clearly not all that keen on The Avalanches i suggest a copy of the new
Shake on Frictional and/or Macho Cat Garage on downLow as this weeks
purchase instead! probably not particularly revolutionary, if that's what
you're after, but stunningly good music nonetheless.

rob

ps: also non-313, The Streets lp is a nice surprise. i'm a bit wary of
records that get loads of hype and i thought it'd suck, but it's actually
rather good in places, despite the mockney vocal stylings. and no, i'm not
a marketing executive.

[313] list party, London, 18th May (?)

2002-03-15 Thread rob webb

morning all,

after much to'ing and fro'ing and a smidgeon of effort, particularly from
Nic Larson, we at last have a proposed date and venue for a list party.

the venue is Public Life, 82a Commercial Street London E1 6LY.

the date is Saturday 18th May 2002.

so, who's interesting in coming? anyone want to dj or play a live set?
please please reply (in private might be best) if you're up for this,
because if we don't get enough numbers then we won't be able to go ahead.

cheers

rob

ps: if you live somewhere other than London don't worry about accomodation -
there are a few of us living down here (London / the SouthEast) so between
us all we should be able to work something out.

However, with regard to the acts before and afterwards, i've never taken

a bit weird.

anyone have any experience of this sedentary form of appreciation?

my guess would be that he doesn't dj, rather they'll show the edition of the
film with Mills' soundtrack.

has anyone been to one of the other screenings? care to comment? did Mills
dj, did he do anything much, was he even there?

Wibo:

you can double it up nicely with that Edition 2: STation of the groove is
on

this one as well,

yeah, wicked track that one! it's a Vice remix on the 12 you mention.

as is a vocal (Morales???) mix of the groove that won't
stop?? (don't know this for sure so don't shoot me!)

i don't have the record to hand, but i think it's a Morales (Defmix, with
keys by Eric Kupper?) mix of Just Another Chance.

On this record is a mix of Direct me that works pretty good with that
Marty

Hardy mix on edition 1

the a-side of the edition 2 12 is the Joey Negro mix of Direct Me. quite
an up remix, if you know what i mean. always reminds me of that Take That
track Dave Lee produced, Relight My Fire... but maybe that's just me.

Genesis, do you see what you've done?

that just let us hear the opening build of the track.

look, it's a preview. nothing more, nothing less. it's supposed to whet
your appetite. it's a teaser... a taste of things to come.

that can't be all the record does.

probably yeah. i'd imagine that it's 6 to 6 1/2 minutes, perhaps even 7
minutes, of that 30 second clip fading-in and then fading-out again. it's
Submerge's take on the recent looped bangers (copyright: r pinning) fad.
the secret's in the transition between the fading-out and fading-in you
know.

if it is all that the record does, than this is a sad state of affairs.

hmm, i think we've been here before haven't we? you weren't so keen on the
preview of Inspiration either were you? ahh well, your loss.

how about letting us hear the good parts?

why don't you drop Submerge an email and suggest that they let you hear the
good parts? i'm sure they'd appreciate some constructive comments tendered
in private.

here's an idea. why not play 3 different 10 sec parts of the track?

just like you would if you were previewing a track at the store.

that's a fair call. why don't you email Submerge and suggest it?

then we could really get an idea what the track is all about.

isn't that the point of a preview.

it is. i hear enough from the 30 seconds, but if you don't then that's

[313] Every Dog Vol 3 again...

2002-03-12 Thread rob webb
...and on the subject of Detroit techno, my copy of Every Dog Has It's Day
Vol 3 arrived today. i've only played it the once, but i've gotta say it's
the best thing i've heard from Mills on Axis in feckin ages... perhaps since
Humana. if you're into Mills' more subtle and less pounding moments then
you need to check this record out.

regarding the price, it's pressed on 2 lovely fat heavyweight pieces of
vinyl! i don't know if that accounts entirely for the price hike, but it
might have something to do with it... after all, Warp are due to release a
v.expensive (40 quid!) pressing of Aphex's Drukqs lp which is apparently
being manufactured at some bad ass plant in California. from the Warp site
- 4 discs of highest grade vinyl (the best audiophile vinyl available, made
at a single plant in California, with higher quality control and labour
intensive manufacturing processes, and made of 100% virgin vinyl- not
recycled) that will cost around £40.00. so, um, there you go.

also the new cd from Deepchord. not sure when it'll be pressed-up, but it's
only available from their website (http://www.deepchord.com) and they're
taking orders up to the end of this month.

something else which is also due out soon is Mixed-Up In The Hague Vol 2.
[EMAIL PROTECTED] used to be subbed on here, but i dunno if he's still around to
give us the latest on that one. maybe Otto or one of the other Rotterdam
guys (Chris?) can oblige?

the new Soul Designer lp (speak up Mr Lig!) on F Communications is
apparently rather lovely, tho i couldn't swear to having heard it yet

it's not really Detroit related, but Boards of Canada Geogaddi is too good

thoughtful, reflective, dancefloor pummelling mood. it's £20 (and
higher) tho... what's going on there, 20 quid for a doublepack! sure,

they can get it, but a lot of places are marking it up at their usual
percentage.

we've ordered alot of copies of
this and will still no doubt sell them
but it's gonna limit peoples spending
on other vinyl this week so other artists
are gonna suffer. good music maybe but

yeah. it's a shame it's so expensive... there are 1 or 2 other records i've

I think it's a (defunct?) offshoot of Blueprint - the only release I have

Experimental downtempo techno stuff...

i think you're right that Fracture was connected to Blueprint, Tom. from
Amazing Discographies (http://ad.techno.org):

fr001 Paul Mac - Outerspace Obsessive (12)
fr002 Huburtus Krantz - Disturbe No (12)
fr003 Claude Young presents - Golem Craft of Ages (12)
fr004 Quentin Garlic - Independent Order of Oddfellows (12)

given Paul Mac's liking for bizarre aliases i fancy there's a good chance
