Last time I was there they had no new inventory of any kind; seemed like they
had batches of the same tracks int he bins. They mentioned that they were
hurting when I asked about anything recent being stocked. They referred me to
Detroit Threads. I think they would have been better off keeping the Ferndale
location, instead of the Roseville. Sad, but not surprising.

Yet another casualty of the shrinking record business, Record Time — a Metro
Detroit institution for 27 years — will sell its final piece of vinyl early
next
year.

Owner Mike Himes said today he'll be shutting the doors of the store's
Roseville
location in March, at the latest. He cites years of declining record revenues —
record sales were cut in half over the last decade — as well as a massive
overhead he can't keep up with any longer.

"I've known this day would come, I was hoping we could just ride it out, but
we're not able to do so any longer," said Himes. "I've been purely in survival
mode for about the last three years, and it hasn't been fun, really. It's taken
its toll. We can't stay open just to stay open anymore."

The first Record Time opened in 1983 and held various locations in East Detroit
before settling in its current location in 1996. Branches were opened in
Rochester and Ferndale though both eventually felt the pinch of declining
record
sales. When the Ferndale store closed in 2007, Himes said at the time, "the
crystal ball doesn't look so sunny."

Record Time's Roseville location covers 8,500 square feet and has a large
selection of used vinyl recordings, as well as a heavy presence of electronic
records. In recent years, Himes changed his business model to focus "98
percent"
on used products, but that presented its own set of problems: If they didn't
have something used, they didn't have it at all, which led to store regulars
buying product elsewhere. "We weren't able to give customers what they wanted,"
he said.

Record Time will stay open through the holidays and will participate in a Black
Friday event sponsored by Record Store Day, which offers exclusive releases for
independent record store retailers. After that, he plans to liquidate the
store's product, and will probably toast the store's long history by hosting
in-store events with bands and DJs.

Down the road, Himes says he's looking into the possibility of opening another
store, but doesn't have any concrete plans. "We could survive in a smaller
spot," he says. "There's still a good niche for what we do."

Chris Flanagan, owner of Street Corner Music, moved his store from Beverly
Hills
to a smaller location in Oak Park in 2009. He says Record Time still has a
shot.

"I think the days of huge record stores, square footage wise, are pretty much
over. You just can't have that playground anymore," he says. "But it's really
hard to kill off a name. Even if (Record Time) dropped out and came up again
six
months later, it would probably still have a chance.

"There are people that are going to be looking for you for a long time to come,
and if things improve around here, (Himes) might have another chance to open
his
store back up."

If he thinks they could survive in a smaller spot, then why close the
store completely instead of trimming some merchandise and moving to a
smaller space?

Hi, be sure to check FLUR while you in Lisbon. Address is "Av. Infante D
Henrique, Cais da Pedra, Santa Apolónia" and website flur.pt

It's near the LUX club which may have some 313-related nights too.

As for Coimbra the very last record store that could have some detroit

Have fun though!

I wasn't offended, I know where Tristan is coming from. I'm just glad

One of the things we are doing with Dust Science later this year is
offering people a CDr with wav's on for free if they buy 12"s from our

it for your label for free :)

Yeah, I do understand those reasons as an artist, but the more we're
talking about this the more I'm wondering if these aren't purely the
concerns of the artist rather than the label - meaning: artist-run
labels are the ones that would be less likely to distribute
digitally. Put another way, I reckon this discussion is really about
the relationship between the label and the consumer rather than the
artist and the listener, if you see what I mean? In cases where the
artist is the label, this gets much murkier. Perhaps a bit
simplistically, or maybe just wrongly, I've always thought that it
was the label's job to provide me with the output of the artists
that they represent - thus my confusion about some of them not
wanting to sell stuff to me.

The only thing that I would add is that dealing with selling your
stuff digitally is a different process than pressing up vinyl and it's
much less personal and fulfilling as a label owner/artist. The
collaborative effort is pretty much out the window. Not to say that
there aren't some great folks working at digital download sites. It's
simply not as much fun.

Right. Well there's one confusion resolved, as I had assumed none of
this label stuff was particularly fun! ;)

And I'm not sure what you were saying about administrative costs T.
Depending on whether you do your own mastering or not, there are none.
But managing digital content and dealing with sites takes time. And
regarding that, refer back to my last paragraph. I find it quite a
pain in the ass. If the money were better I might change my tune. But
it's not good enough for me to at this point and considering how
entrenched iPods and the digital market is at this point, I wonder how
much more things could improve.

I think this bit may have been a miscommunication. I thought you said
something about digital distribution being expensive towards the
beginning of this discussion - I must have misunderstood that. Nothing
to see here. Tumbleweed, etc.

And a last important point is that digital has the tendency to
invalidate the notion of an EP or LP, ie narrative, ie a more complex
listening experience. That sucks. It really is not a nice feeling
that music consumers can and usually do ignore whatever you (the
artist, the label) were trying to communicate. It's great some digital
buyers pick up whole releases. And I also understand it's nice to just
buy the one or two tracks that you deem worthwhile and skip the ones
you think aren't.
I hear you. I remember reading similar in an interview with one of the
guys from Autechre a while back as well. Personally, I feel like I've
heard lots of narratives that really disappoint though, and cost an
awful lot more due to accommodating more tracks. As a listener these
days, I'm more interested in a couple of tracks that stand out, because
more often than not, the tracks that complete the narrative don't stand up.

I'm not sure this is really about convenience either. It's about
enjoying as much good music as my budget will allow, and I definitely
feel like I'm getting more of what I want for less this way. That said,
I love it when an album or an EP creates that narrative and I always buy
it all if I feel like that's something that I'll get out of it.

I guess the key thing is that ultimately I don't care about whether or
not the artist has a nice feeling about my purchasing or listening
experience. That's a bit ruthless perhaps, but you could also argue that
holding someone ransom to purchasing an entire release for one or two
quality tracks is ruthless as well. Commerce is ruthless I suppose.

But almost nothing about digital is actually better
for art itself; it's all access, convenience, individual imperative.
And in fact it makes the art more homogenized, not in terms of content
but just about everything else, and disposable. So yeah. I don't
really like it and I can sure understand why guys like KDJ haven't
jumped into it yet.

Hmm... I can't say that I agree about this. If the pleasure of listening
is obscured by the burden of encoding vinyl to a digital format that is
more suitable to a lifetime spent commuting, then digital can be better
for art. It means that more of the listener's time is spent actually
listening. I know Thor has just said he spends more time browsing, but
this isn't my experience of it at all. If I only listened to vinyl on
turntables I wouldn't listen to much music at all. In fact, I probably
see more of the cover art while listening digitally than I would with wax.

I'm actually working on a digital relaunch of the dL catalog like,
right now. And I'm working on a few new vinyl releases.

Well that's good news!

A physical thing I think you are forced to have a relationship with.

When I owned one, I found myself browsing my collection on my iPod
almost more than doing actual listening.

I don't do that with my vinyl records because they present physical
limitations that 1's and 0's do not. I usually listen more than
browsing. Others like the art and just physical ownership too and I
don't disagree with that either. On top of all that, 1's and 0's are
fundamentally different than a record groove, and digital sounds
different.

i don't think that's quite right, although it doesn't help when you're
trying to get distrib/sales, you send promos to places, and they get
snatched by people who work there before the people in charge get to
hear it. that happened with us and hardwax.

it's more that the people who run/work at a lot of distribs/stores are
part of the floundering dj/club scene, and focus their stock
accordingly.

I think the elephant in the room is that for a very long time, and

the people who work for record stores and distros were primarily DJs
who don't really want to sell records because they want to keep them

2008-01-10 Thread JT Stewart
Surprised it's taken Syntax so long. They seemed to be a mess 5 years
ago. We worked with them for a couple years, and I can't say much good
about them except that John D (the owner) was cool. Eventually they
were ordering fewer records of ours than we could sell direct in the
USA by ourselves, which struck me as a little odd.

I order from dancerecords.com, or go to dope jams in brooklyn...also
sometimes visit/order from turntable lab, submerge, or forced
exposure. Thre's also a great recordstore in Chapel Hill, NC called CD
alley (despite the name, it's full of as many records as cd's, and
though they don't carry loads of dance music, they can order anything
with US distrib for you).

I still think there is opportunity for new record stores and distribs
in the USA. All the old stores and distribs who are still centered
around dance music as club/party/dj music are going to fail. The
places I see it thriving are places that sell it side-by-side with
jazz, disco, soul, rock, etc, ie as "real" musictough times but a
change for the better, in the long run, if you ask me.

http://2007.newformsfestival.com/open-studios
Sat Sep 8 dubstep - Youngsta (Tempa Records), Filastine
Sat Sep 15 minimal techno - Mike Shannon, Frivolous, JPLS
Also Jesse Rose at Lotus on Sat Sep 15 (not really my cup of tea but...)

For record stores, you probably know the usual suspects
Scratch - http://cdn.scratchrecords.com
Zulu - http://zulurecords.com
Beatstreet - http://beatstreet.ca
Remix - http://remixrecords.ca
Vinyl Records - http://vinylrecords.ca
None of which are that great for stuff that gets props on this list...

(313) record collector (iowa city) vinyl clearance sale

2007-06-15 Thread kent williams

The Record Collector, Iowa City's premiere record store for 25 years,
is moving locations, and is blowing out EDM vinyl of all sorts -- 10
records for $50, 25 for $75, 50 for $125, 100 for $200. Anyone
wanting to drive over from Chicago can stay at my place if you want to
make a pilgrimage.

What's there? I've gotten 50 records so far, and only scratched the
surface. Basic Channel, UR, Force Tracks, Traxx, Relief, Kanzleramt,
Profan, Disco records, Tech House, tons of House...

For some reason there aren't many local vinyl DJs left, because they
say just me and a couple of other people have jumped on this. There
is still tons of stuff -- I found 60 records and put back 35...

What I got tonight:

Sorry about the SPAM. I've recently put a bunch of stuff up for sale on
Discogs if anyone is interested. Most 12"s are £4, usually in near-mint
condition, which seems to be less than the going rate on discogs for most of
them. Since I've just spent all this time using Discogs to sort this out, I
reckon it's only right and proper that they get the dues for any items
purchased, so please buy through the site. Shoot me an email if you have any

The sound system is really good there.

Damn straight. They've got Martin Audio upstairs in Panorama, and a massive
Funktion 1 installation in the main room:

Or check www.zitty.de, the Berlin city mag. A bit of German basic knowledge
is helpful maybe. :)

Under 'Veranstaltungen' (= dates) you can enter the place
(Veranstaltungsort, like 'Maria') or better just click on the date and check
a genre like 'Party'. Hit 'Suche starten' (Start search) and wait for a
lng list of dates. :)

Cheers!

I've been there a couple of time and both times have rolled up in company
with a bunch of lads, obviously off our heads and obviously tourists. This
has not resulted in us having any hassle getting in though! The only sign
of door policy I've seen is the famous confiscation of camera phones which
they're very polite about (and let's face it it just adds to the buzz). In
my limited experience all Berlin clubs rock - know what you mean about the
Maria audience, it's still great fun though, Watergate seems "cooler" (both
a good and bad thing) but is certainly a very smart place indeed!

I was in Berghain 2 weeks ago and didn't see anything from what Roman
was talking about.
There was short queue on the door due to couple drunk dorks who were a
bit too agressive and they were the only ones who i saw not getting in.
and i totally agree with security guys with this one :)

ok, i was there together with my girlfriend, i don't have long hair and
i am from Eastern Europe rather than Southern, but we got in quite fast.
They did search people pretty carefully but that was not a big problem.

The club itself looked quite large and nice. Don Williams was doin some
monoish techno, that was pretty boring to me but probably could appeal
to some 313 purists :), so first hours i was spending in small room with
DJ Sasse (Moodmusic) playing awesome electro, house and acid sounds.
later came back to see Adam Beyer and was totally blown away from his
set. Very futuristic techno, something like that nu-skool tech from
no-future camp. not as crazy and sharp but very groovy and interesting
indeed. the groove was totally oposite of pounding relentless beats :) .
it kept us dancing for quite a while! The sound system is really good there.

didn't have enaugh energy to see Prosumer (Playhouse) and Mr. C playing
as it was already arround 6 in the morning and we left to hotel.

Watergate, Maria are also great clubs. and i can't skip Weekend and
Sternradio who are located at the same building (one on 17th floor, and
other in the basement) and happened to be just 200 meters away from our
hotel.

very good place to check whats happening is http://www.de-bug.de (go to

for the record shops - besides of hardwax - make shure to check out

the venues usually reveal their upcoming acts for the weekend between

this weekend we have the m-nus party, rob hood and john tejada in town

RE: (313) Record Time ...The Truth

2005-10-11 Thread Fred Heutte
That's a good note from Mike Himes. The fact remains
that Huck is out of a job, although he probably wouldn't
have liked standing behind a cash register or restocking
the main floor all day.

What Himes says about the changing nature of the business
is very true. Last week the headlines were all about Steve Jobs
dictating to the record industry what their new business model
will be. They don't like it one little bit and nothing is for
certain, because the industry has 100 years of whatever it takes
(and I mean that) to keep near total control of the creative
output of musicians. But that is the way it is.

What Mike Himes, Huckaby, Vince and all you who have worked
in the fast-diminishing world of retail record stores have is intimate
knowledge of where the good stuff is. That doesn't need four
walls and a bunch of display racks, and it's very valuable. Ebay
is one place where that knowledge goes, podcasting is another,
and there are a lot more opportunities going forward.

I'm not worried about vinyl because the truth is, despite all its
drawbacks, it has vitality as a performance medium. The "death
of vinyl" at the end of the 1980s was the rise of dance music
culture as vinyl changed from mass market to performance medium
and allowed very small runs of 500 to 5000 to dominate, opening
up the market radically to new sonic ideas. The digital revolution
that began right at the same time has been dominated by the
digital rights lockup of the industry and the RIAA, and they have
killed the retail record stores moving from vinyl to CD and now
DVD with their greedy and narrow-minded approach. Of course
they will try and dominate the electronic digital media as well
(sorry, Steve Jobs ain't *my* friend, his tussle with the industry
is a competition among sharks), but there is an opening for many
new business models, some of which will at last treat the creative
and performing musician with some fairness. Submerge and many
others selling on the net is one such but not the only model.

Record Time was always an anomaly, if you ask me. What
other full-service retail store during the last 15 years had a
full size dance music room like in Roseville or a fully committed
electronic music staff like Ferndale? Ameba in San Francisco
has the latter but they have never even had listening stations
which is the other essential part of the retail business model for
dance music. And I can't think of any others. From Gramaphone
to Eightball and Vinyl Mania in New York to Tweekin and BPM
in San Francisco to the late lamented 12 Inch Dance Records in
DC, the stores I've always found to be the best are specialists.

Obviously RT will continue to emphasize electronic and dance
music, but it is just the same the end of an era. Although if
you want a tragedy, this isn't it. (A tragedy is the loss of
those priceless record collections and stores and source
recordings on St. Charles Avenue and the Lower Ninth and Treme
and throughout Cajunland in the Katrina flood.)

RE: (313) Record Time ...The Truth

2005-10-11 Thread Svagr, Jodie
Seeing as how some of the posts relating to Record time seem to have gotten way
off the mark, I thought it best that the truth be posted from Mike Himes(see
below)... and although it is a shame that Mike Huckaby is no longer with the
company, it's a terrible insult to the really good people that still work
there, and have been amazing music buyers for the company for many years to
compare Record Time to Tower Records. I've been buying music from Record Time
Ferndale for many years now, and Vince Patricola and Matthew Boynton's
knowledge of dance music has been invaluable to me. Matt and Vince both know
their music, and they work really hard to be a positive force in the Detroit
scene, if you have any doubts, check out the Detroit Electronic Quarterly
magazine. It's a great example of what can be created if you have a positive
attitude, and Vince is the creator of it.

So, to dissuade anymore of this getting out of hand... (and just so you know, I
originally chose to shop in the Ferndale store because I preferred the
layout... the Roseville store's seperated dance room felt way too elitist for
my tastes... once I started shopping in the Ferndale store, I realised that the
buyers and the staff are incredible with what they know).

a message from Mike Himes:

Recently we made the very tough decision to close the dance room and
put all product onto the sales floor as we have had success with in
Ferndale. I had been struggling with this decison for almost 2 years as
the room had been slowly losing sales and traffic. With this decision
came something that made total sense on paper and on a business level
but tore my heart as it was my baby and vision and had done so much for
us and the community it served. It's 2005 and the climate for dance
vinyl is changing fast and although it is hard I had to face the
writting on the wall and make the decision to close the room and move
forward. This meant that Mike Huckaby, a dedicated and respected
manager and DJ had to be let go.
In a perfect world the room would be there forever but today the way
people aquire music is changing fast and technology which was once my
friend is now taking business away from me at a rapid rate. The DJ in a
box craze is over, final scratch and the laptop DJ systems are used by
almost 50% of DJ's today and the "good" music has gone back
underground.
In the past 5 years 70% of all independent record stores have closed as
again music is being aquired in different ways that skip people like
me. I don't want to be part of that statistic so I must do what I have
to and unfortunately closing the dance room is a step I took to not be
included in that stat.
For 22 years I have been part of this community and our allegance to
the electronic music scene has not been equaled by anyone else and I
find it sad that people would think I would turn my back on something
that is so very special to me and this is why I am writting this note.
Some of my best friends and most cherished moments are from the work we
have done with and for this great music community. The dance room is
closed and things change but what will never change is my committment
to support our local scene especially the electronic scene.
We are planning on still carrying the music and supporting it and the
mail order business is still alive and busier than ever.
 I guess that's all I have.
Thank you all for your support

When the Tower Records here in Birmingham, MI closed it's doors, I
snagged several sealed copies of various Drexciya releases along with a
bunch of Tresor records. This was after Stinson died, so you can imagine
my excitement in being able to find extra copies to stow away at an
unbeatable price.

No knock to Huck at all - but RT has more than one person on staff that knows
wax. Mike will be missed indeed, but I'd be surprised if the stock dropped
into oblivion.

For clubs, be sure to check out:

Moog - http://www.bcn-nightlife.com/en/clubs/164
Nitsa - http://www.nitsa.com/
(the 2 best IMO)

There's also Razzmatazz / The Loft, but I'm not into it to be honest, too
much of a big tourist spot, a bit soulless - like Fabric in BCN.
I think La Terrazza is shut down now, which is a big shame - if it's
re-opened definitely go there, amazing venue.

For record stores check out Sci-Fi, just off the top of La Ramblas. They
should be able to give you much more info on good parties happening at the
time too - I don't have a link though, sorry, but just turn left off La
Ramblas (facing up) about 2 blocks before Placa Catalunya and you're there.

I just tried PlanetX in the US, and Juno and Nuloop. None of them have

but maybe that is asking too much.

I need to get that Bitstream Domestic Economy double lp while I'm at it,

Even less 313, but a track that I'm slightly obsessed with at the
