Re: (313) DEMF 2012 Post-Op
The local news this morning reported it was the most tickets sold since it went private. It is very interesting to see how the movement brand has evolved. It will be very hard to get a crowd the size of the free festivals but I think electronic music is not going to fade away in our lifetime. Afterparties? Visionquest's need I say more 7 party at the Old Miami was cool, the weather was great and the backyard was bumping until about 8pm Monday. The cover was 10$, drinks were taxed up for the holiday and the sounds were oversexed (sexy lyrics), housed up, and minimal funk basslines. If the partied had continued further I might have just stayed there as it was closer to home. Cheers to the Detroit-Berlin crew for keeping it real. Monday evening at Heart Plaza seemed busy as usual, arabmusik was beating on his Akai, seemed to have a 90s rave sound. To elaborate, breakbeats and shrill monophonic synth lines in the vein of early prodigy--except with dubstep beats--seven minutes was plenty for my Detroiter ears. There was the typically beatport euro minimal stage and the harder sounds of the underground stage, the two stages sound good, beatport had a better sound. Keven Saunderson was at the main stage and Jeff Mills closed. Saunderson's set impressed me, I'm not sure why this is the first time I've really been impressed by him--perhaps my taste has changed or the DEMF vibe has changed since 2000 and his style has remained the same and that is what I really appreciate, can't pin-point it. Jeff Mills played as the wizard, it has been a few years since the last Wizard show in Detroit. He played all the classics and a few unknown old school jams. Towards the end he went into early Axis techno and finished with a seven or so minute 909 drum solo, amazing drum tabs. DS On 05/29/2012 03:05 PM, Arturo Lopez wrote: Couldn't make it this year. Overall, it was still a whole lot better than '06, but that was the year Paxahau took over the fest last minute. Sequence of performers, and stages the performers play on, still is terrible, there's little flow conducive to dancing or even chilling [why was Moritz on Red Bull, and not Beatport, for instance]- Red Bull is like a spring break party stage, Beatport is great for chillin with the nice grass and open view of the river]. Afterparties were just above average too. Detroit Odyssey film fest on friday was incredible, the J Dilla movie was so inspring, missed the first film tho [cycles of the machine or whatever] Then Timeline [w/Mad Mike] played a very soulful shorter set, more on the jazz tip with lots of bright, ambitious sax solos, perfect ending, just great. The Omar-s party later that night was so-so, disappointing after the raves last year, ended early after 3am. Sat. day at the fest was disappointing, Scion were good, tho muted, but the sound/setting didn't do them justice. My top were Orlando Voorn, Model 500 live, Shake, Rolando, ESP, Starski and Clutch, Larry Heard and Kirk Degiorgio at the fest. Rob Hood was too much mhs for me, but solid. Never saw him at Metroplex 25 year, or Sims either. DMX Krew never played at the afterparty at Blondie's sat. night [wasted night]. Metroplex party had logistical problems, only got to hear Sergeon, Stingray, Assault, and Juan, still a good time tho, solid party, lots of jitters and jukers showing how it's done. Monday was a big disappointment at the fest due to rain cutting off sets in the afternoon, and mediocre sets too. Model 500 was awesome, mostly for the flow of the classics, some reworking to make them snap, some hip hop courtesy of MC Nick Speed, who has a forthcoming album on UR. The visuals were straight out of star trek, the whole main stage audience was jumpin. Monday night I went to Oslo for more jukin/jittin, was not as good a vibe as Metroplex, Assault spun mostly the same set, still fun. I'd do this weekend again but skip sat. at the fest, and the afterparty at Blondie's. More on the trip from my Demented Scrawlings From DEMF-twisted tales from the underbelly of Detroit, later. A few standouts here and there but I wasn't blown away by the majority of the acts, but definitely plenty of fun moments throughout. As usual the afterparties were generally more entertaining than anything going on at the festival proper. Festival - Mark Ernestus was great, but I could still hear sound bleeding from the stage behind the amphitheater, which was a bit distracting. Enjoyed the reggae but as usual no one around to hear it at that time of day. It's unfortunate with paxahau banishing all the locals underground to the land of terrible sound quality, but caught a few sets that were quite good (Shakir, R. Hood, etc). Larry Heard was a lot of fun and was great to hear something more mellow for a Sunday afternoon. Inner City was fun, probably the best way for me to describe it. Beatport Stage - Pardon my hatoraide but I couldn't listen to more than about 30 seconds of that nonsense at any point over three days. Thought the music was 90% junk. A lot of people on that stage thought they were -very- cool, though. One of the only stages that each performer needed to bring a 30 person entourage along with them to populate the performance area. Lame. Redbull Stage - As I've found over last few years there's always something entertaining going on in that direction, even if I'm not a fan of the music it seems like everyone is having a pretty good time over there. Afterparties - Center Street Social - Got shut down around 4-ish before I really got into it. I never did get the whole story with all the other drama associated with that party

For such a small store, it felt like there was a lot to delve into. I only made my way through half the stacks before I had to leave, but I found lots and lots of treats nonetheless. We also checked out the Detroit techno exhibit upstairs. I'm glad Cliff (I think that was his name) brought it to our attention. I also made a trip to Ya Digg records. I was truly surprised when I pulled up to the address and saw the building it is in. I thought I'd written down the wrong information. That was completely NOT was I was expecting. The store itself was a bit hard to find, which was a good thing because I had an opportunity to see the variety of other businesses within the building. I guess that is a perfect example of adaptive reuse. I wonder how many other factories have been similarly reutilized? Gotta luv Detroit! Ya Digg itself is a small store and still needs to settle into the space. It apparently opened just recently. I didn't have enough energy to dig through the stacks, so I limited myself to two small sections and managed to spot a number of interesting items in no time. Cha-ching Local heads may want to check it out, though you may want to come ready to rummage. Friday evening I went to the film fest at Detroit Music Hall, primarily to see Metropolis. I've had Jeff Mills' soundtrack for years and I've seen the original movie, but never in conjunction. I thought his music worked for the most part, though the ambient sections seemed to work better and more often than the beat-driven sections. Seeing the film while in Detroit seemed gave a whole new relevance to the storyline... The 'Timeless Suite for Ma Dukes' was curious. I don't know J Dilla's music at all, so I had no point of reference. The orchestrations did sound interesting. However, I noticed that at least two Erik Satie pieces were performed in their original and then orchestrated forms yet Satie wasn't mentioned, only the song titles. If I didn't know any better, I might assume those were J Dilla songs. I had to leave the theatre to put more $$$ in the parking meter, so I missed the final credits. Hopefully, Satie was given due credit. I still don't understand why Satie pieces were being performed during that concert and what connection Satie and J Dilla have. If anyone can explain, I'd appreciate it... The Drive Home was fun to watch. The audience reactions were very funny. I had to leave early, so I couldn't stay to hear Timeline perform, unfortunately. After resting a while at the hotel, I decided to check out the Dub Science party. Never found it. I guess it would have helped if I'd been in the right part of town... :) Eventually, I gave up and went to the Black Nation party at The Works. Did Jay Denham and/or Scan7 play at all? If so, when? Granted, I got there pretty late, but by 4am I gave up and went back to the hotel. I will say up front that Paxahau should be commended for having improved the sound quality in the underground stage. After trying different configurations, they actually found a setup that alleviated some of the aural problems that have plagued that space. Standing on the sidelines, the increased clarity was obvious but it became even more obvious once I went into the pit for the full aural experience. Deep, chest-rattling bass and sufficient representation in the mids and highs to make it somewhat easier to discern what was actually going on in the tracks. Of all the stages, the music at the underground stage was most often in tune with what I wanted to hear at the festival so I gravitated towards it. Patrice Scott's set was nice warm-up music. Since I'd managed to tire myself out before the festival even began, I just sat and listened. It was a good way to ease into the weekend. I really enjoyed Nico Marks' set too. I'd never heard of him before, so it was pleasant treat. I liked what I heard so much I picked up one of his CDs (he obviously has quite a number) at Record Time and have been enjoying it. Wouldn't mind hearing more of his work. Mark Ernestus and Scion's sets were good, but it was much too quiet. Not that I was expecting the sound system to be cranked up all the way, but it really wasn't loud enough to fill the space sufficiently. What I did hear was good but I was more interested in staying out of the sun/heat so I never lingered at the main stage for very long. Onur Ozer's set was kinda interesting and was the only thing I heard at the Beatport stage all weekend that I could

Thanks all for your various reports. Reading them made me slightly feel like being there. Because due to a dark tale of plane overbooking i couldn’t make it. I was so piqued that i took the week off and went hiking in Normandy. I’d like to thank my Shorecrest room mates for their understandings. — K* Le 06/06/2010 14:51, ja...@iridite.com a écrit : Great report - thanks for taking the time to write it all down - sounds like you managed to fit a lot (maybe too much??) in? If so, when?Granted, I got there pretty late, but by 4am I gave up and went back to the hotel. I liked what I heard so much I picked up one of his CDs (he obviously has quite a number) at Record Time and have been enjoying it.Wouldn't mind hearing more of his work. Onur Ozer's set was kinda interesting and was the only thing I heard at the Beatport stage all weekend

Re: (313) DEMF Post-Op Thoughts
Jacob, I enjoyed your reports too. I'm impressed with your speediness at getting posts up!! It was great to meet you this weekend. Sorry to hear about the media pass distinctions. I didn't realize that. The stages were much emptier this year. I think the artists were complaining last year about too many people up on the stages. So I'm glad they took care of that this year. Although, how I would love to just be able to be right up there with my face up close to all the instruments - esp Moritz von Oswald trio - to be able to actually see what I was hearing. I'm slowly getting my act together. Just put my first festival post up last night. I'll be adding bits nightly for the next little while. http://denisedjsdetroit.blogspot.com/2010/06/movement-festival-2010-happiness.html I'm beginning to accept the fact that I have more fun outside of Hart Plaza than inside. But that's fine. Plenty of good music to enjoy this year at the festival. Moritz von Oswald Trio was excellent. Got to see Carl Craig play modular synth twice in one weekend! I don't have much time to write much more at the moment, got to get working on other stuff...like a dissertation. Re: (313) DEMF Post-Op Thoughts
I only went to the festival Saturday… and I could see the way things were headed so I chose to skip it the rest of the weekend, and instead hit TV Bar Sunday during the day, and Old Miami on Monday. I must say I have no regrest with my decision… TV Bar was pretty good when I arrived though it died out a bit early as people headed to the festival. But the Old Miami day party just has a vibe that nothing else during the weekend seems to replicate, and I quite enjoyed the music there this year too, it seems to be quite a bit better than it was last year. The previously mnml guys seem to be coming around, and to my ears the tracks being played now actually have a pretty nice house vibe and some funk to them. The Hot Natured disco party may have also been good, as it was pretty fun last year, but sadly I was too tired to catch it. ~David

Re: (313) DEMF Post-Op Thoughts
I second that it was not a great weekend overall, though sunday was a great day at the fest, could stand against any other one day at DEMFs I have known, of 6 for me. Afterparties - Center Street Social - Got shut down around 4-ish before I really got into it. I never did get the whole story with all the other drama associated with that party, and along with the whole police thing made Saturday was a miss for me all around. Sunday - Interdimensional Transmission Party - Great venue, and an awesome crew. They've thrown some of my favorite demf-related parties (Cannonball Run) and I had an amazing time. The main room was a sweatbox though, but aside from that quite fun music and a great atmosphere. Metroplex - Didn't catch it, and none of my friends did, have yet to hear how it went. Old Miami - Apparently the place to be now? I went to it a few years ago for the early morning party and had an amazing time. Was a lot of fun, good food, and very reasonably populated (room to hang out, dance, and have conversations). By the time I got there this year there were like 500 people wall-to-wall, and a line around the block. Thankfully with the onset of rain and

Ok little late on this but i am catching up on my e-mail. Last time i heard Robert Hood play was really, really, really horrible i was pissed all night just hearing him play. I think he doesnt live in Minimal Nation any more and some should do a Coup d'état there very quickly if there is anything to be saved. If Inner City live is anything like their first performance at the DEMF/Movement or whatever you seriously do not want to miss it. They had a full-on band on stage (including backing vocals). It was raining like crazy but Hart Plaza was loaded and the show started with Kevin shouting One nation under a technogroove and 5000 people going crazy and shouting along. That show was top notch and it was one of the best (techno) live-acts i have ever seen, period. Yeah actually I don't mind side B, although I'm not absolutely mad about it. It's quirkier. And I feel it might grow one me. I feel I already have absorbed all the juice out of side A and I've only heard it about 3 times. I tend to think that the headline track is the A side though, so that's what I was levelling my ire at. Re: (313) DEMF Schedule Released!!!
Inner City's performance may be only so-so, but I would still like to hear them live. Given that their sound is from a different era, it will likely be a welcome stylistic change in music. Derrick May may play everywhere all the time, but he never plays near where I live so it would be silly to miss the opportunity to hear him again. He's always played well and interestingly when I've heard him so I see no reason to skip him altogether. That said, I love Hood to bits!!! Granted, I was truly disappointed with his amazingly lackluster set the last time he played the main stage at DEMF, but I can forgive him since I've heard him play enough times to know that he can send me into orbit in a way that very few DJs can, especially when he plays in smaller venues. The fact that he'll be playing live makes me super curious. Changes are opt for May and Hood and pop into Inner City occasionally I hate having to float from stage to stage, but sometimes it can't be helped. {}0+| On 5/24/2010 10:03 AM, kent williams wrote: Well, to my mind it's a no brainer -- Inner City will be meh, Derrick May plays everywhere all the time. I've no doubt that Kevin Saunderson will show up to be on main stage for this, and who knows, maybe they've worked up something live-ish (or Live-ish perhaps) to perform, but I can't get that worked up about missing this. The last time I saw Saunderson at DEMF he played a pretty generic big room hands in the air set*, with a few cheesy prog-house tracks in the mix. I'm more of a small room, sweat on the walls kind of person, so it did nothing for me. Nothing would please me more than to hear afterwards DUDE, It was AMAZING! but my hopes aren't high. *this is a real problem, especially in Europe, where they still have big room events. There's a certain kind of least common denominator set that gets a big reaction from a large crowd of pilled-up punters. So the DJs that play out 2 or 3 times a week all the time tend to streamline their sets to What Always Works. And just as all cars optimized for drag coefficient will tend to look the same, all perfected Big Room DJ sets will look the same. That's fine if you want the biggest reaction from a big crowd, but it's generic and uninspiring to anyone who actually cares about the music. One DEMF tip for all -- if you're in one spot and you're enjoying it, don't be tempted to try a different stage because it might be better! You end up spending the whole weekend walking between stages, and you still miss the good stuff. It's like traveling in Europe -- do you want to see places, or train stations? All true but when I did see KMS in Europe (at Berghain in December 2008, following an off-the-hook live set by Octave One), he stayed away from the anthems and played deep and well. Greetings 313! I hope you're right Robin, I'm making my debut appearance at Movement this year... finally making the pilgrimage to techno mecca : ) Started the Detroit warm-up by catching Iggy the Stooges live the other week (playing through Raw Power.) Next up it's a 6 hour Derrick May set at Bleep, that should be a fitting send-off. RE: (313) DEMF prediction [plus cheeky Bleep43 re-spam about this Friday]
Cool. I'll try and listen out for it when out. Ahem. This isn't a bad time to RE-SPAM the list with something fun coming up on Friday. Stop reading now, if you're averse. Speaking of Transmat, label owner Derrick May, AKA techno demi-god Mayday will in fact be playing a six-hour set for us at Bleep43 this Friday, in London. Mr. May has promised that as it's us, he will not be bringing his box of 'Super-Club Techno.' Instead, expect a set of fun, across the board, deeper techy gear, house, disco and whatever takes his fancy, a la his best sets at Lost, DEMF 2000, and Mix-Up Vol. 5. Hope to see a whole lot of you there. http://www.bleep43.com/ Cheers. Nuff respect to Michael Geiger. I think he's an excellent DJ - but it's mad to see him on that list, given that as soon as I saw Carola at 4x I was thinking WTF. Does anyone outside of Detroit or people who have visited Detroit know who Michael Geiger is? I'm not trying to make too big of a deal about this, but I'd expect to see Derrick May there before him. That said, there's little rhyme or reason to this across multiple festivals and multiple sets of political pressures. Tristan
Re: (313) DEMF statistics revealed
Programming of the fest has never been as good as in the first 2 years, and those that don't realize that, i don't know. i say this with all due respect to all involved this and recent years. Comparing a detroit fest that headlines marco carola, and had benny benassi, to one in which the last poets's Umar Bin Hassan recited poetry with Kenny Dixon and Derrick May is nuts. One highlight for me was Mills' first time playing, when he got slightly wizard on the decks. (and when the mixer blew up, and dmay got on the mic - drama is good sometimes). And finally, a big mistake is the absence of DJ Hell. He merits a place on the lineup. Maybe even a whole night or stage devoted to his sound, from his punkier days to now, curated by him. There's a reason jeff mills is the international dj gigolo on gigolo 2, and its annoying that that connection hasnt been brought to bear on the world stage that the demf sometimes is when the music stands for itself. I mean last year was a great year, but in my ears only because of a few choice, hot moments at the fest, and a couple of parties that stood out, like the friday night party at the works, and the matchless Music Institute party. A few of those moments and connecting with friends is all i need. -Alex ps just remembered, whats up with omar s not playing (or is he?) I'll be dropping data bits on my blog over the coming week. Anybody interested in the .xls file with the raw data please let me know and I will email it to you offlist. Kevin Saunderson in one guise or another has played at every DEMF. Magda and Marco Carola are the only two performers to have played more than three times. T-1000 has played at only one. Neither Terrence Dixon nor Omar-S have played at one yet. More here http://www.deejaycountzero.com/blog

Programming of the fest has never been as good as in the first 2 years, and those that don't realize that, i don't know. i say this I agree, but some other years were damn good too. It's entirely possible that the best is yet to come. And finally, a big mistake is the absence of DJ Hell. He merits a Gigilo is/was a popular label, that's for sure. And it stands to reason that if Adam X has played, Hell should too. But I'm not nearly as enthusiastic about it as you are.

Let the hating begin? There are some Detroit names I'm glad to see but it seems pretty front-loaded with Europeans. Not necesarily a bad thing -- witness the year the Dutchies all came. But considering they're probably going to be paying bushel baskets of hundred dollar bills to Benny Benassi and Carl Cox, they could have booked some Detroit guys who would be big draws, and don't play in Detroit much. In a perfect world, Francois Kevorkian would play next to the river first thing Sunday and make it the ghost of Body and Soul.
Re: (313) DEMF Pre-Lineup
I actually don't mind this line up. It's got the usual Detroit suspects I enjoy plus peeps like Flying Lotus and Osulande. There's a bunch of Berlin DJs/acts they could have got too (Dettman, Shed, Scuba etc etc). At least there are some Detroit people on there. I was prepared for less than that. Surprised to not see the likes of Theo, Omar S, Patrice Scott, Keith Worthy, Sascha Dive, Seth Troxler... Early days yet, I'm guessing more will be added. robin...

I thought Scuba was an alias for King Britt?
