Seemed to work for me with 1.3.0. But tonight it selected used channels and got
bad packet loss.
I had to overrule the selection this morning.
Instead of help with interference it makes things worse.

2016-03-04 Thread Rory Conaway
We have a hotel we are working on that had about 4Mbps for the entire hotel and
was functionally unusable after 4pm. Dropped the Barracuda in there and
blocked all video streaming. The funny part was that it wasn’t NetFlix
streaming causing the issue. Everybody can surf, do VoIP, and get emails now
until we get more bandwidth in there.

"the United States [...] created the industrial revolution "

I'm not taking a stance on the political discussion. Just pointing out
that the industrial revolution started in England, specifically in the
textile industry. It was illegal to export their machinery or even
drawings of the machinery because it was such an advantage. Samuel
Slater was considered a traitor to England for building similar process
equipment here after studying the machines in England and then emigrating.

We might have embraced and expanded the ideas...like a Microsoft to
England's Apple.

But I will add this, the United States with all it's evil Capitalism, advanced
the world at an unheard pace technologically for a long time and created the
industrial revolution. That's the difference between capitalism and socialism.

The long skinny expensive 12V AGM telecom batteries are designed in such a
way that there's no top terminals to drop a wrench on. Front facing
terminals.

I've never seen a low voltage disconnect on telecom rectifier + float
battery setups. It's assumed that for a backbone ISP POP that you will have
an auto start generator.

Or that you would rather drain your batteries all the way to dead, damaging
them, but keeping the equipment online as long as possible (customer SLAs
and hoping the grid power restores itself before the battery string is
toast).

Never hurts to have a big ass fuse between the batts and everything. Twice the
size of your rectifier output.

Dead short fuse of last resort type of fuse. Just to save your butt when doing
wiring and you drop a wrench across some terminals.

In some battery plants I installed, we had these nice large knife switches with
a big cartridge fuses built into the knife part. Allowed you to take the batts
off line if you want. Nice to do if you are doing batter wiring, like
replacing a cell or something.

If the load, rectifier and batts are all on the same parallel circuit, then
when the power is out, the batts provide the load current. When the power

LVDs are mixed blessings. Many folks don’t use them any more. Especially if
you have a back up generator.
If the LVD trips, then it generally requires a truck roll when the power comes
back on because things in a larger NOC do not always gracefully recover from
having their power interrupted without warning.

Probably where a product like that is intended to be used, you’re just never
going to run the batteries all the way down. Lots of batteries, and a backup
generator. If the generator fails or runs out of fuel and no one fixes it
before the batteries are at 0%, there is no sentient life remaining on Earth,
or at least some damaged batteries are the least of your problems. Like
Hurricane Katrina where they couldn’t refuel the diesel generators in the
highrise datacenter buildings.

The general idea is that the rectifier maintains a -48 battery string at
float voltage, and the load runs off the batteries. that's your ups
functionality.

-48 not actually being 48, of course, float voltage for an AGM string is
2.25V per cell. More typically the 2v cells are in 12V units, those wired
in series to achieve 48.

So (2.25 x 6) x 4 = 54VDC thereabouts

should be set for giving you 54-55 VDC out.

If the load, rectifier and batts are all on the same parallel circuit, then
when the power is out, the batts provide the load current. When the power

Subject: [AFMUG] Eltek Rectifier Huh?

Trying to figure these things out! I purchased and built an Eltek rectifier
product using these products:

CG1S-AUN-VC COMPACT POWER SHELF / REAR WIRE 200AMP MAX 48V UNIVERSAL OUTPUT
POLARITY

BC2000-A01-10VC 48V, SYSTEM CONTROLLER W/ ETHERNET, NEXTGENERATION, W/ CLEI

V0750A-VC RECTIFIER, 840W, 53.5V, 15A, FAN COOLED (BOTTOM TO TOP) -INPUT:
90-264VAC

It seems like this just takes AC power and gives me 48v DC out. I was
expecting it would also attach to a battery array and provide charging of those
batteries plus use their power source if grid power was lost. Am I totally
wrong on that? I don’t see any method of connecting batteries to this power
shelf :/

Noob out,

Scott

it or or just look like all the other people who just don't like that side

We have a workable contracted option thats itching to do our installs

go that route to the boss. Our network is simple and installs arent brain

Re: [AFMUG] Installer Performance

2016-03-04 Thread That One Guy /sarcasm
I see alot of the decline here being purely stubbornness and attitude. I
screwed up and told every installer that if they have a better way for them
to do it, then do it. I also let mopes train mopes.

I showed them things I do that speed things up like preterminating one end
of the outdoor cable so when climbing up to test signal, once you find the
mount, you can peak it, then just secure the cable on the way down, its
only one climb for the most part. or as an alternate, do your testing, get
it mounted, estimate the cable run and cut it to length in the van, poke
the two ends through the divider and do the terminations from the warmth of
the front seat (we do split runs using an SS as a demarc) their complaint
was they arent good at estimating lengths, no problem, so i got them some
nice flexible test cables marked with tape every ten feet, then they use
that for an exact number. eliminates putting boxes back in the van,
eliminates multiple trips back and forth

what i get when ive audited them is, climb up and test, climb down to get a
mount, climb up and mount, climb down to get cable, walk box of cable to
tower or ladder, terminate, climb up and connect, climb down to get
something climb up. climb down, do the rest of the install, then come back
and fasten.

It boils down to "im going to do it my way, not your way" like i said to
them all, i dont care as long as the job gets done right and well. They
only hear the first part.

The two man crews just doubled the amount of wasted time, not to mention
stopping to use the bathroom, stopping to smoke before leaving the shop,
before getting to the customers, after leaving the customers, etc. pooping
and smoking should be banned in the workplace and im a pooping smoker

[AFMUG] Eltek Rectifier Huh?

2016-03-04 Thread Scott Vander Dussen

I don’t see any method of connecting batteries to this power
shelf :/

Noob out,

The biggest problem I see with two man crews, is travel time - in a lot of
cases getting to the install and back takes as much, or more time than the
install itself. Safety seems more to be more of an argument for two man
crews than time - our guys often will team up on the more complicated
installs for that reason, but a typical install is just one man, and we
normally schedule three installs, but if travel time allows, he can easily
do four in a day... and a few service calls besides.

There does seem to be a disconnect between the office staff and the
field staff regarding how long something should take.

Granted, this time frame was increased when we started doing more

typically schedule a morning job, and and afternoon job, both are
installs, then we squeeze in repairs or other onsites after their
first morning job, or after their afternoon job, or we schedule two
fixes, one install in a day, or other combinations. It’s a very
specific structure that our dispatching department follows. On
average, I’d say our guys complete 2 installs and 1 fix a day, but
some guys are a little quicker than others. Each job is different, so
as I am often reminding both the techs and dispatch, there’s no sure
way of predicting the amount of time to allow for a job. The added
factor to everyone’s answer that I would think has an effect on the
productivity times is who is paying their techs hourly +OT, and who is
paying their techs per job? That to me can have a major factor in
jobs per day.

2016-03-04 Thread Jay Weekley
Is anyone willing to offer a short internship for an "experienced"
installer? I'm thinking 2 to 3 days for an established installer
(maybe me) to help do installs and learn how the bigger guys do things.
I definitely wouldn't send a new guy to get trained. I'm self taught
and know there are better ways of doing things.

Too many bottlenecks for two man crews. When I was the only installer, i
had the option of pulling the partner company guy, but I would have to be
able to cut the time in half or more, never could do that consistently,
could get an hour down to 35 or 40 never a consistent benefit

We just busted the two man crews to one because it was taking longer with
two than with one, but thats just because of bottom of the barrel economics

Sometimes it depends on how much you want them to accommodate fussy customer
demands as far as where to mount, how to run the cable, etc. Also how much
time you want them to spend connecting customers devices like smart TVs and
wireless printers to the WiFi. Running the cable and dealing with customer
devices seem to be the big variables. Unless we have to run a PTP wireless
link to another building to get LOS, that almost doubles the install time.

Depends on travel time between installs.

But when I did installs I usually did 3-4 a day (we were contractors at that
time so we would push for four during the summer). Every installer at the WISP
I worked for was booked at least 3 a day. 9am, 1pm, and 3pm… but it was
something like a 2 hour window for first contact.

Average install was 75 minutes from knocking on the door to leaving. Tried to
have no more than 30 minutes tops travel between jobs.

Thank you,

Two things wrong with that. First, what do you mean "back to"? This
country has never been socialist, and I don't see that happening any

Second, the guy who made everyone stand in line for toilet paper was
Johny Carson, and he wasn't even a politician. It was pure supply and

One man does not make a committee. You're forced to go in there making
deals with people at every turn - tit for tat. Some things went far
enough, some didn't. I will say that committee made more progress than
congress as a whole over the last 8 years.

In Alaska, the commitee made it possible for me to visit general
physicians instead of driving 4+ hours in snow covered roads to the
nearest VA facility. I was also able to receive care at the local
hospital in an emergency under the VA rural healthcare program.

I am also an IAVA member and am well aware of some of the things the
organizational leadership has been pushing - they're going a bit too
far.

Trump is going to ultimately save the right. He put the nail in the
coffin for the gop. The right will have no choice after this election but
to reorganize and resurface as something new. Trump didn't do that
directly, the right has been a lame horse for some time, he just put her
out of her misery. This is a good thing because when the right reemerges it
will not be splintered. With it looking like Hilary has a looming
indictment it will probably come down to having to choose between a useless
hippie and a lunatic, not an ideal set of choices. This election may end up
being determined by who is on the ticket for vp with hopes of an
 assassination.

thats a response made to discredit the opponent, it still doesnt change the
fact the VA failed under his watch, with his knowledge, unless he didnt do
his job and read the reports. He sponsored nothing, just voted.

Twice now my dad has come near death due to VA mistakes, if we werent a
family full of people in the medical field, he would be dead, once while
bernie was being incompetent.

No, he does not have a good record for veterans, he just didnt make thing
worse directly.

All femtocells that I know of are 3G. There will probably never be a 4G

So don't expect much data through a femtocell.

If they want data they should use WiFi.

I don't think you can use data over it. What model is it?

Re: [AFMUG] Verizon network extender data speed

2016-03-04 Thread Ken Hohhof
Not really asking what Internet speed it needs to function properly, but rather
what you should expect to get on a smartphone connected to the Network Extender
and not using WiFi.

Not sure why someone would use it like this, maybe they don’t want to give out
the WiFi password.

I have a 10/2 and it works great. I have no idea why they would use it like
that though. I only use Wifi for data when I am connected to it. If you turn on
the phone WiFi it won't use the femtocell for data.

I thought these were only 3G and mainly for voice, assuming if you really
cared about data you would just connect directly to WiFi. I remember when my
smartphone speeds used to top out around 1M but I don't remember if those were
the 3G days or whatever was before 3G.

I have a customer on a 20Mx20M connection who put in a couple of these
microcells and is complaining about Internet speeds on their smartphones only
being around 1M, they called Verizon who blamed our Internet. Verizon also had
them test speed to internetfrog.com which gave significantly worse results than
speedtest.net. I swear the training for all microcell support reps is "blame
the ISP".
