Yes. The 450m has an Aux port capable of powering a UGPS and receiving
sync from it. Same goes for the SyncBox Junior Aux version. I've used
them on several 450i's and they work great. Except the GPS data, which
Cambium still needs to fix on the 450i. They also broke autoSyncStatus
via SNMP in 14.2.1 and up.

2017-02-02 Thread David Milholen

Im just the opposite.

All of our Sync/control are CMM4/CTM2 and now CMM5. I cant argue price
point but I cant argue total reliability either. Since our total cambium
deployment of cmm4

the sync just works ,the surge protection just works and the poe just
works. This year we did not lose a single device on any of the 20 towers
we have in operation.

Since the surface of PMP450i radios I have been waiting way too long for
the CMM5. We have 2 to deploy this week.

I am really liking the gui on the cmm5 and it seems there are a ton of
oid's for stuff as well so nice job on the box.

There are no moving parts IE fans but heatsinks YESS..

Oh and yes GigE compatible for sure so definitely thumbs up!

cumbersome, too expensive and little to no versatility. not to

As far as powering them.. nothin wrong with a regular ol

power cycle them. Or hell, even just a GigE PowerInjector+Sync and
turn the sync off (or don't connect a sync pipe) if you find that

Hi Sean, since the 15.0.2.1 firmware release, have you had a chance to hang

We've done 1-1/4" and 2" Sch40 PVC up water towers and grain legs. Clamp

Straight PVC conduit is cheaper than flex.

If you used IMC, like Ken is saying, then it's rugged as hell and you'd

See where I am at I got access to:

Lowes
Home Depot
Rural King
Menards

This is in Ohio

I get most of my conduit is from Menards since I am only 15mins away from the
local store. Where as Lowes/Rural King I am about 45mins away and Closes Home
Depot is about hour away from me.

This is our first time ever using conduit. Lowe's didn't have any goose necks

I can criticize him for spending it. What's the point of making millions if
you can't spend it blasting someone's ashes into space with a cannon? But
if you want to eat breakfast at McDonald's every day like Warren Buffet,
that's OK too. It would not be my choice.

OK, so it's not that there is no power in there, it's that there is
no UPS power in there, and the Office has a UPS that can feed it. And
it's not a closet, but more of a room. And I can Guarantee that
rogue devices will not be plugged into it (I alone control the room).

I'm sure your individual devices are lower consumption than that,
but you can't assume someone won't plug in something higher power at
a later date.

IMO run two cables to two smaller switches, or get an outlet in there.

Is there another POE-IN powered switch, ALA Edgepoint S16, that
can do both 48 and 24V output? I have a remote wiring closet with
no power, but want to put a switch there to power a couple VoIP
Phones and ubnt cameras. I'd like to power the switch and
subsequent POE devices via 1 or 2 cat5 feeds from one of the
offices. The S16 will work perfect, but wondering if there is
something else that might be a little cheaper. I looked through
the netonix page, and saw DC powered switches, but not one's that
took the POE straight in one of the ports.

it's not a closet, but more of a room.

NETCONF is for configuration, not data export.

XML formatting is nice, and might be useful in a monitoring method not
reliant on MIBs.

I've actually been rolling this around in my brain today... Like if I were
to build a open standard for a real SNMP replacement, what features would
it have?

Authentication
Delivery Reliability
Multiple Endpoints
Per-Metric Subscription (Per Endpoint)
Low network overhead
Low CPU overhead
Data Push as well as Data Pull
Structured, descriptive data format
Optional Encryption

I have some ideas on how to accomplish most of this, but I'm curious as to
what else people want/need.

[AFMUG] Hosting recommendation

2017-02-02 Thread Travis Johnson

Hi,

I have a friend that is asking me for help selecting a new web hosting
location for an active domain. It requires basic hosting functions (SQL,
Perl, PHP, etc)... but he would also like to find someone that can help
maintain, update, etc. the website backend and filtering attacks, etc. I
think the main site is using Expression Engine for the backend.

He is willing to pay for the hosting as well as maintenance and such.

[AFMUG] Good alternative for CRS106-1C-5S

2017-02-02 Thread Paul McCall
We have a couple situations where we need a cheap way of adding a couple ports
to a switch that has run out of fiber ports. I got excited to see this
model... CRS106-1C-5S, but no one has it. I liked the Mikrotik for consistency
and management

Any good suggestions for an alternative?

Re: [AFMUG] Providing Service at Different Rates / in Different Markets

2017-02-02 Thread Dave

We under sale it. So, the expectation is what it is.
The up to and starting at puts you in the marketing land of Cable-Co and
Telco.

We dont go there..
Yes, some areas cannot afford said package for said rate so we have a
package that fits those areas but the package is cut back.

On 02/01/2017 12:28 PM, Christopher Gray wrote:
How do others handle providing service in different markets at
different rates?

As I've expanded into different areas, I've found I need to charge
significantly different rates and have to provide different speeds. I
adjusted my website to say things like: "...up to" and "...starting at
$...". It feels a bit misleading. I want to be clear without
publishing every single service option.

I'd like some suggestions for more appropriately treating the
different areas. Perhaps entering a zipcode or town to see price options?

Thank you - Chris

[AFMUG] Upcoming Linux conference

2017-02-02 Thread Zach Underwood
I wanted to let everyone know about 2 upcoming Linux conference. They are a
great chance to learn and meet other open source people. I will be at both
leading the deployment of wired and wireless networks. At both of the
events there are many companies that are looking to hire Linux sysadmin and
Linux programmers.

*Southern California Linux Expo(Pasadena, CA)*
March 2-5, 2017
Pasadena Convention Center
Attendance~4000
https://www.socallinuxexpo.org
For this event they already own all of the network hardware but lost the
people that setup last year and had no documentation. The network will be
based on ~120 wndr3800 running openwrt and about 40 hp switches. I have
built a system to bulk config all of the APs and switches much like a
central management system. The internet connection will be a 200m fiber DIA.

*South East Linux Fest(Charlotte, NC)*
June 9-11, 2017
Sheraton Charlotte Airport
Attendance~800
http://www.southeastlinuxfest.org/
For this event a company will be loaning us ubnt APs and hp switches. This
is the 4th year that I have done the network at this hotel for the event.
The very first at this hotel we ran all of our cable in the drop ceiling of
the expo area and have been reusing it each year. The internet connection
is 300m x 20m coax connection.
Here is the network from last year.

I hope to see some of yall at these great Linux events.

And what about "rouge" devices? I'm not sure what they are, but apparently
they are common these days. Maybe because you can't say "off the reservation"

How much would it cost to have an electrician wire that closet with an outlet,
and maybe an exhaust fan.

I worry about a POE switch in a closet with no ventilation. Now throw a few
hats and coats on top of it.

Hi,

Here is the new fiber network that has been developed over the last 6 years in
a suburb of Idaho Falls. A quick breakdown:

Fiber install = $3,000 to the homeowner, or financed at $15/month as a bond
against the property for 20 years.
Fiber transport for 100Mbps = $25/month to the city ISP service ranges from
$40-$109/month depending on which provider you pick and which speed.

So, right now 100Mbps x 100Mbps total cost is around $149/month with $0 install.

The other thing is the customer can switch providers "on the fly" from a
webpage.

If you use liquidtite and use the proper connectors, you don’t need to put in a
drip loop or 180 to keep the water out. Any bend you make in that stuff makes
it harder to pull the wires through. But if you can pull the wires and you
don’t have connectors then what you are describing is just fine.

This is our first time ever using conduit. Lowe's didn't have any goose necks
or anything so I'm thinking I'll run the conduit up (so the opening is facing
earth) and then do a 180* down the silo and into the shack/our NEMA box. Is
this what everyone else does or is there an alternative?

You know, there are some common sense ideas that would allow "guests" to
work here legally while removing the "once you're put one toe on

Instead, immigrants, legal or otherwise, are permanent political pawns

Re: [AFMUG] Providing Service at Different Rates / in Different Markets

2017-02-02 Thread Cameron Crum
Christopher,

FCC basically wants advertised plan rates which makes the whole thing BS,
but what else are you going to do? I guess they assume you aren't
advertising more than you can actually deliver. Taking the speed at each
customer location is somewhat impractical for such purposes unless you just
do a one time test and call it that forever. The FCC doesn't really have a
way to report a "variable" rate plan. I have a customer who goes through
this every year. He runs everything wide open and has data caps. So he lets
you get as much "speed" as your radio can handle but bills for overages
every month. He ends up doing a speed test on install and putting that into
the "baseline" info for the customer and we use those numbers for the 477
grouping them together into as few "buckets" as possible. So it can be
done, but it takes more effort and is certainly not "traditional".

We just have the same set of plans (with names, rather than speeds)
with the same prices everywhere, and the speeds set differently depending
on the area - so if you're in an area where we can cover you with ePMP 5ghz
half a mile from our office, you'll get a vastly different speed than if
you're out in the middle of nowhere where we can only cover you with 900mhz
FSK from a tower with a grand total of 5 customers on it, but for billing

I like this dark fiber model too, but I think it's been tried, probably at
the wrong time though. I know there were several companies doing that down
here in the DFW area back in the late 90's. None left. My buddy, who worked
for one for a while ended up taking the job as IT Director for the city of
Frisco, a wealthy suburb north of Dallas. Every time they tore up a road
for any reason, he would make them put in fiber with the idea that the city
could not only serve it's own needs but generate revenue that wasn't tied
to the taxpayers. When the not so forward thinking city manager put a stop
to it, my buddy resigned. I would think that any company doing this on a
large scale would need some major funding and at least some laws to fast
track the regulatory process so they wouldn't have to fight permitting and
zoning in every municipality in the country. Unfortunately, that means
politics which generally leads to how much of the tax payer's money is
involved whether it is loans or grants or just greasing the palms of
everyone who wants a piece of the pie.
