good singer overall... :)

It seems that poor Madhushree is at the receiving end again with the
pronunciation of this particular song. Being Non-Tamil speaking
person, I prefer to be out of this debate.

But if AR Rahman himself feels that Madhushree is better choice for
this song irrespective of her pronunciation and chooses her to sing
his songs again and again, frankly one shouldn't complain and evenif
one decides to complain, it is meaningless because the song is
recorded and is already out in the market.

Moreover, I find that I could enjoy the melody and the voice quality
in that song and I enjoyed this one immensely.

Enjoy the music !

while u could see the beauty of the music and tune, i see the beauty
of her voice... esp where she goes Maruthan towards the ending

and yes, in Tamil, other music director has been able to bring the
best of Madhushree more than ARR. for instance Unakkul Naan -
Pachaikilimuthucaram, probably her best Tamil Diction song. Rasasiya
Kanavugal - Bheema another beautiful number. Her Eppo Nee - Kaalai was
a hit number, and yea, her magic scored there, eventhough some part
her diction was off.

 Hi all,

As mentioned by Gopal in his earlier mail, ARR won the best Music
Director Award at the Sunfeast Tamil Music Awards, held yesterday.

Director Shankar, actress Gautami and Shruti Hassan (kamal's
daughter) presented the award to ARR.

ARR started off by saying ella pugazhum iraivanukke (all praise
belongs to God) and then thanked everyone for the award.

He said that while answering questions from the readers of a tamil
weekly**, he noticed there were many questions about movie songs in
the past being melodious and the current songs lacking melody. Hence
he realised that there's a communication gap - a gap about what the
audience want and what is given to them as film music. Since there are
so many constraints while making film music, it's not possible to give
what exactly the audience are looking for. To fill this gap, through
KM Music Label, he is going to come up with albums which will satisfy
the audience in terms of melody.

Earlier, ARR presented the best female singer award to Chithra.

** The tamil weekly ARR was talking about, is Kumudam. ARR's
answers to readers' questions was published in the latest issue of
Kumudam, the transcripts and scans of which were also posted by Vithur
couple of days back.

(The award function was a major mess-up in terms of organising.

2008-07-06 Thread Dinesh
Well, never heard of Indira??? Do not give a way to miss this album!!!
quickly listen to it... Its one of ARR's best, its a movie by
Suhasini, Maniratnam's wife. And the songs r top class. released in
the year 1995.

the best being Thodha Thodha Malarnthethena by SPB and Chitra. This
song continues to show the beauty of the combo... not to mention the
tune... super!!! i feel u could say its a melodic fusion. Vairamuthu
scores here big time

Next i would rate Nila Kaigirathe by Harini... its her 1st song in
her career yes... ARR introed Harini with this song only, and it
turn out to be evergreen number in Tamil Film Industry. there cant be
a single Tamilan who doesnt know this song. Its just too beautiful to
explain by words... Vairamuthu shines again here Nila Kaigirathe,
Neram Theigirathe, Yaarum Rasikevillaiye, intha kangal mattum unnai
kaanum. just shows the innocent of the child. this song another
proof for the excellent combo of ARR's music with Vairamuthu's high
Tamil poetry. listenin to this song while closing ur eyes just
brings u to heaven. Hariharan's version is another beautiful
version too

Accham Accham Illai, haha this song is just too popular that it
used to be used for events regarding national day and such, and some
even uses it untill now Again Vairamuthu shows his skill here, u
just get goosebumps listening to this song..

And then we have Muneredhaan and Oothakaran Marimuthu as typical tamil
folk numbers... was used beautifully in the film. Ootakaran Marimuthu
has modern beats but suited well for its folk tune...

Overall its an album which gets rating 10/10!! do not miss it

and album that will find its place in his top 10, along with
Alaipayuthey, Roja, Duet, Boys and such :)

You haven't heard Priyanka or its language version Indira. You are
 missing a lot.

It is one of the best album of our man.

Though only lightly humorous, naughty, peppy, teaser Bhaanumati/
Rupmati
had become popular at that time, the real divinity of the album is in
the Khili Chaandni, a male version and a female version, and then,
just a tiny notch lower is the duet Thoda Thoda Pyar. Both are in
different voices but I think lyrics were same.

And then there is a nationist Ye Jaati Paati Kaisi that I always feel
sad about that it didn't become a hit, though it is a worthy precursor
of Vandematarm and should have been rightly included in that album. ARR
has never made such a song again. Just feel the vibrations in the
opening like Ye swarg Bhoomi Main Paaoongi Kahaan, what a feshness,
what
a purity and innocence, it spreads hope.

And there is as simplistic Barasne Wali Hai Barkha also there.

PK Mishra has done a respectable job with lyrics, for a change.

Go get it somehow and you are in for a treat. And thanks for reminding
me also, I also have to hear it again.

[arr] Rahman-Awards-International Recognition and his FANS !

2008-06-28 Thread Dinesh Vaidya
I have been reading some interesting topics / discussions on this
group regarding awards which Rahman got or didn't and a recent topic
about his songs not known to westerners.

I find all this business of awards and international recognition very
amusing. Music is such a personal matter, I can't force someone to
like A particular music by giving an award, Can I ? I like Rahman's
music and that is extremely personal thing to me. If he gets an award,
fine ! If he does not get one, still Fine ! His music is invoking
positive energy into so many lives and that is enough for me..

Rahman does have huge fan base here in India as well as through
genuine music lovers across the world, and I don't think anybody from
our group started liking Rahman's music because of particular award of
because some westerner went gaga over his music ???

Do I or anybody in this group needs to reaffirm our faith in our GURU
depending on the awards he gets ?
Did I notice Rahman only because he won national award for Roja ?
Was I disappointed when Rahman's songs did not get to Oscar Finals ?
Was my liking of Bombay Dreams changed because they were not nominated
for Grammy ?
Does it concern me if Pray for me brother song is not known to
westerners ?
Do I need a foreigner / westerner to tell me how great my GURU is ?
Do I feel worried if westerners are not able to understand the
greatness of this simple man ?

The answers are obvious... NO !

Rahman has done some work in the Western world because HIS TALENT IN
INDIAN MUSIC was noticed by the westerners which made the producers
there INVITE Rahman to work with them.

Having listened to virtually all his compositions ( thanks to my
friends on this group ), I can definitely say that Rahman's music is
very very different than other composers. I won't say difficult, more
as CHALLENGING, and to those who get hooked to Rahman's compositions,
the key lies in the fact that Rahman's music makes direct connection
with the listeners heart and mind !

For a humble man he is, I think love and affection of his fans is the
award he always likes to have more than anything else.

For MY GURU, we the PUNE based The Wandering Souls disciples will be
performing a special edition of RAHMANIA in July to celebrate
GURU-POURNIMA in that month !

If so, then Hindi music for it will certainly be better than Tamil

disputing that, please share with us your reasons why you are eager for
re-used songs that you have already heard in other languages. I mean

I have also bought and heard ARR's various south indian language

So, I think the problem is because of the hype created in this list and

 The solution is simple:

Bring our expectations to the same level that we are going to be

 How?

There are people in this list who are in touch with ARR.

So, they can request ARR to inform them about the re-used songs. Then
those persons can share the info with the list here, even if not giving
full info, may be things like ARR will be using a few songs of

Sakkarakatti in due course, and how many exact number of songs in due
course, and which exact songs in due course.

This will keep members mentally prepared of what is going to be
delivered, so there will be no unpleasant surprises when, after waiting
eagerly for 15-20 days for Sakkarakatti, having read a posted a few
hundred mails about it, one comes to know that it has re-used nums.

Of course, it will be subject to ARR's commercial commitment to the
producers whether he can release such minimal information beforehand.
But I think that ARR should understand the disappoint his genuine fans
are having with reuses in the new releases, and should convince the
producers to allow him to release such minimal info among specific
groups.

   me
that the music made in the span of 1.5 - 2yrs has 2 used songs.
anyway, there are 4 other songs for a fresh treat.. hopefully,
they

[arr] Re: SO ONLY 4 SONGS IN SAKKARAKATTI.DAMN!!

2008-06-21 Thread Dinesh
let people post their opinions too... sheeshh we r not here to
praise ARR always, isnt it?? its good to take stories from both the
sides [positive and negative]. lets wait for sakarakatti and see
what this reused songs has done there... till then, lets put it to
rest...

 message is poorly-crafted, insulting spam!

Either way.. to you and to others who come up with ridiculous messages:

Grow up! You really think you need to defend Rahman? Guys he's out
of our hands... he's not your little kid brother in a junior band on
their first performance, who you need to defend. A.R. Rahman is an
international, highly-acclaimed artist. You think people will buy or
not buy, listen or not listen to, Rahman's music because you have
total influence over everything? The same applies for all those
people with... Let's vote for Rahman and totally spam on this
start-up site... this award.. that competition

Same with the Rahman lost National award. Sure, it's a prestigious
award.. he's already received them... does he still need to keep
proving himself? Are we so insecure as fans.. that we need some jury
members to reassure our faith in Rahman. Same thing with Oscars...
who cares? If he wins... GREAT.. if he doesn't.. who cares? I still
love him and his music. No regrets.. no defensive..no offensive
comments.

Listen to his music and enjoy it guys, we don't have to defend it.

Learn from the man himself. He's probably the most popular Indian
music artist and yet has the humbleness of a beginner. He let's his
music speak for itself, and his music does speak for itself. Please
stop posting ridiculous messages. Moderators should definitely
filter out these kind of messages.

And for the rest of members on this group: Please do all of us a favor
please don't reply to these kind of pointless messages. I know I did,
but I had to. I have been seeing these kind of messages for a very
long time and had been wanting to make a point. I will not reply to
these kind of messages again. Ignore them and they will go away.

I'm not sure if my message will go through. Gopal please don't filter
this one out, it may be harsh or rude, but it's the reality.

[arr] Re: One of ARR's most underrated and best soundtracks

2008-06-21 Thread Dinesh
most underrated albums of ARR

1.Kangalal Kaithi Sei [ gosh, all 5 songs were 5 diamonds, tracks that
cant be re-created again. En Uyir Tozhiye, Theekuruvi, Azhagiya
Cinderalla, Anarkali . these 4 r TOP TOP TOP class..]

2.Udhaya [The tracks r very fresh, take Anjanam for instance, what a
composition, beautiful man!! Enna Enna is another beautiful track,
love the tune and SM's rendition Rehunuma could have been an
anthem if released on Time, superb song! Udhaya Udhaya was a fantastic
love melody.. Pookum Malargal, mind blowing so beautiful like
its composed by an innocent kid... lyrics r just too good chinna
siripe poothume, sella nanbane... koodi selvam etherke?

these albums were treated so badly, infact i have mentioned KKS
deserves a national award for its outstanding music, hereby i stress
again, a magic[KKS] that cant be re-created again.

Guys - Dont know how many will agree with me but my take on this is
that compared to ARR's strike rate of good music, the other MD's are
much lower (my figure would be that easily 80% of ARR's releases would
fall under the good music category. The exceptions would be one off
like Parasuram etc). It's just that due to either non or low publicity
of the audios, the sales figures dont come up. All MDs fall a victim to
this but in ARR's case, it seems to be much higher. A recent case in
point would be Ada - wat a CD but unfortunately extremely bad
publicity!! Considering all this, according to me some of ARR's most
 under rated tracks would be

 1) Tehzeeb - just did not get the praise it deserved particularly for
ARR's efforts in giving Ghazals a different twist!

 2) Kabhie na Kabhie - Awesome music - lousy movie and even more
 pathetic publicity for the audio/movie

 3) Bose - Probably his best in the millenium

 Cheers!

[arr] RAHMANIA Pune Interesting Statistics !

2008-06-10 Thread Dinesh Vaidya
First of all, thank you all Yahoo group members for your personal
emails and postings on group. ( Hi Gopal Sirish (Hyderabadwale ), we
are performing again in July. You will be my guest }. Your encouraging
words give us enormous strength to carry on spreading our GURU's work
in both music and social field. We are also working on logistics for
taking this show outside Pune to say Bengaluru or Chennai or other
cities where support of you fans is guaranteed.

Here is an interesting statistics from 8'th June RAHMANIA programme.
Out of say 22-25 odd songs we performed, following was the breakup
Movie Director wise

a. Mani Ratnam's movies = 9 songs
b. Ashutosh Gowarikar's movies = 7 songs
c. Rakyesh Mehra's movie = 4 songs

Interesting ! out of all songs we performed, more than 80% were by 3
Movie makers mentioned above !

Does that say something about the passion / skill of these Directors
and the comfort level ARRahman has with them ? We have every reason to
be excited whennever anyone of the above director announces a project
with Rahman.

So let's count the movies these three directors have announced with
Rahman.

Best regards

2008-06-08 Thread Dinesh Vaidya

Small Talk
with- Rahmania

(A group of
youngsters have been paying tribute to the musical genius in their own way…. by
performing his songs !

nbsp;

Pune Mirror (
Times of India)
Sunday June 08, 2008

by Veda Aggarwal

nbsp;

It was raining
outside. I was on my way to swargate, to a room on the ground floor of Nehru
Stadium to be precise. It was an interview I was after. A group that performed
only works by AR Rahman, the only group of its kind in the country ( other than
the one that backs up the man himself ).

nbsp;

It was late,
almost 10 at night. But I was up and so were they. They were practicing for
their next show. The room was small, but large enough to fit all of the group
(22 of them ) and their instruments. They have keyboardist, a bass guitarist,
percussionists and even a Shehnai player.

nbsp;

The concert is
called RAHMANIA, another tribute to the musical genius, and the band calls
themselves “The Wandering Souls”.

nbsp;

Anmol Bhave is the
man behind the band. “I fell in love with ARR after I heard the music he made
for
Roja. That was back in ’93. When I was in college, I used to participate in the
college fests. You know the ones like VERVE. After a while I began to recognize
the faces of the participants. And as it often happens, that there’ll be one
sing that’s picked up by a number of colleges. I noticed that no one chose
songs by AR Rahman/ I got in touch with what I thought was the best of the
talent and together we put up a performance at the Tilak Smarak Mandir with
only music by AR Rahman. That was the beginning of Rahmania.”

nbsp;

“Since then I’ve
listened to almost everything that he has ever composed,” continues Bhave. “My
favorite is from the soundtrack of Kannathil Mudhalmittal – that’s a Tamil
movie directed by Mani Ratnam.”

nbsp;

“No,” he said,
when I asked him if he listens to anything else. “The way ARR composes, I don’t
need to. There’s the song from the movie Taal,
Kanin Aa Lage, that has been inspired from Russian folk music. He’s used an
acpella technique for the song “please sir’ from the movie BOYS. That’s only
with voices, no instruments backing them up. I admire the number of layers of
tones there are in a single song of his. And the way he uses voices, that’s the
reason we have so many singers (there are 7 in our band), he does the same.”

nbsp;

“I owe what I am
to ARR.” says Bhave. “I am a sound recording engineer. I wouldn’t have gotten
into that field at all if it wasn’t for his music.”

nbsp;

When Rahmania
started, it was a very small baby,” says Sagar Chordia, “But now I’m determined
to make this show successful. We want to have a performance at least once every
month. The repertoire won’t change. It will be something that people can relate
to.”

nbsp;

Chordia is an
investment and finance consultant. Anmol and he are friends ever since they
went to school together. He told me about a show they had in 2005. “It was July
and the performance was scheduled at Yashwantrao Chavan Auditorium,” he
narrated, “ It was raining heavily. It then started to pour and we were sure
that people wouldn’t bother to venture out. But they did come, bought tickets
and the show was successful.”

 nbsp;

“The Wandering Souls” has just now finished their RAHMANIA
concert in Pune and as I type this letter for you, my mind is filled with
emotions…… Emotions of happiness, emotions of fulfillment…..satisfaction that
we upheld the soul of your music and we gave the audience the BEST what we
could as per your own encouraging words to the group.

 nbsp;

Rahman Sir…… WE DID IT….WE DID IT !

 nbsp;

Our programme started at 7.15 PM and ended at 1030PM. The
group had prepared a bouquet of songs chosen from your choicest of all. What
did we perform this time ? here is a list for you,

 nbsp;

We had a 2000+ audience who were rooting for Once-More for
so many times….We also displayed the PFMB books and informed the audience about
the work you are doing with UN for poverty alleviation through your ARRahman
Foundation. I am sure the audience understood the MAN behind the music this
time.

 nbsp;

We can not speak for ourself, I think our audience will
probably say something about us. After performing the RAHMANIA show for more
than 10 times now, the group can certainly vouch that it is a very very
challenging
task to reproduce the essence / feel of Rahman sound. We have been trying to
reach that sound and each time we try to reach closer it brings us the
satisfaction and pride that “YOU ARE THE GREATEST” !

 nbsp;

Rahman sir…..we missed you…..We are hopeful of getting a
chance to perform in front of you, whatever we have learnt from one of the
greatest musical genius, a humble and caring person………

 nbsp;

On behalf of the entire group consisting of Anmol Bhave /
Hrishikesh Ranade / Ashutosh Joshi / Jasaraj Joshi / Swarali Joshi / Swarada

2008-06-03 Thread Dinesh
Its from the movie Kadhalar Dhinam yes...all the songs were
SUPER HITS in Tamil. and the Dola Dola u mentioned is Doli Doli in
Tamil. that song, Kadhalenum, was one of the most popular song
in 1999 for Tamil Industry .. :) and it sure made a
BIG change in my life

Hey im surprised u didint know its Original Version's name r u
aware of ARR's other Tamil albums??? I mean, Kadhalar Dhinam was one
of the most popular Album of ARR. not knowing it really shocked
me...

There are more 'unpopulared' (unpopular) sound tracks by ARR like

But I would never tag them as unpopular or failed albums. The
fact that they have come out of Tamil Nadu, got dubbed into Hindi and
that those movies never released, speaks for the extreme popularity
 of ARR itself.

Otherwise, for people like me, who stays millions miles away from
TN and who has no conection to Tamil language, would never get the
 chance to listen to them.

I have heard all of them and am proud to have them in my

The above were dubbed to hindi from other languages to cash on
 ARR's
popularity, I think first two movies probably didn't get release in
Hindi and though I had seen video's of third one's songs, i still
 don't
remember having hearing about the movie. So these are not exactly
 ARR's
  failures but badly planned projects.

   *Vishwa Vidhaata - 1997*

Sad that this album didn't become popular. Its Kal nahin jo kya
 hai aaj
wo is such a lovely song, one of my favs. Kaliyon ke khilne se was
 also
quite good. This album was ARR's high, not his failure.

   *Fiza - 2000*

It added insult to injury when this album's best and most popular
 song
Mehboob Mere was sadly not by our man but by Anu Malik. In any
 case,
ARR's only song in the album was a religious Piya Hazi Ali and was
 a
lovely sufi rendition but religious songs don't really become that
  popular. Failure but not ARR's.

   *Love You Hamesha - 2001*

Sad that it had one of the last lyrics by the veteran Anand Bakshi,
 but
didn't give any indication of his greatness. Mehboob could have
 penned
much finer lyrics than the cheapness in botal tod de and sone ka
  palang. Indeed ARR's failure.

   *Lakeer - Forbidden Lines -2004*

This would remain as an example of excess hype not getting met in
 the
delivered product, be it movie or the music. ARR's first attempt at
Punjabi music in Nachle didn't make the world say balle-balle, and
 his
first attempt on cheerleaders music in rozana was just a dumb
 squib.
Though he could do better with Punjabi music in RDB's title song,
 it is
sad that ARR didn't attempt at rozana again. Indeed ARR's failure.

You can add Muthu also in the list. outright ugly lyrics when the
 song
speaks of making love 4 times a day as the method to keep wife
 happy. It
was vulgur, it was cheap. Indeed ARR's failure.

You can add Priyanka also which didn't find much takers which is so
hurtingly sad because it would be one of the best album of ARR.
 Khili
Chaandni and Thoda Thoda Pyar were heavenly and I don't think ARR
 has
given Ye Jaati Paati Kaisi type of song in any other album. This
 was
one of ARR's all time bests, not his failure.

If im not mistaken, he already composed song for a movie called
Sakthi It had a beautiful track called Achuvellame.. That
song itself sounds very close to Athangara Marame - Kizhaku
Cheemayile...

and he was a part of AGOSH, a trio in a group, like SEL and they
composed for the movie Kodieswaran, and the audio was a TOP SELLER in
1998. too bad the movie never got released even up to now, but the
audio is very very very famous and close to heart of every music

Dear Dude Pavan

Glad to know your keen interest in the activities of The Wandering
Souls group who performs RAHMANIA and thank you for your best wishes
! To reply to your queries,

1. Noted your feedback on the AR Picture, but we loved it.
2. We performed Vellai Pookal last year in 3 languages, Marathi, Hindi
and ofcourse Tamil. Rahman's original song is in Tamil only. We have
talented lyricists and language translators in our group and through
their efforts, the Hindi / Marathi version was born.
3. This group is performing a Tamil song this year and that is
probably from Thiruda Thiruda. They also perform the Bombay Dreams
version of Shakalaka Baby. The highlight of their concert is ofcourse
the Bombay theme.
4. The RAHMANIA programme has been performed 11 times ( give and take
a few more ) till date. Outstation performances are limited to nearby
cities in and around Pune because all group members are employed in
Pune and this activity is purely out of love for Rahman and his songs.
5. I think some videos have been uploaded on Youtube, that is what
Amith Chandhran has informed me. You can check on that.

 *Sultan The.. Trailer

Superstar Rajinikanth saw two things when he watched the trailer of the
 animated movie 'Sultan The Warrior'.

For the first time he saw himself in a movie in which he did not act but
still was able to enjoy Sultan as he is called in the film.

He also saw the talent and potential of his own blood in its full
glory and
splendor revealing in front of his eyes.

The actor after watching the trailer was moved and appreciated his
daughter
Soundarya who is the creative force and director behind the first of its
kind animation project in India where a film star is being featured in a
full length animated movie as an 3D animated character.

Ocher movies, Soundarya Rajinikanth's company is producing 'Sultan The
 Warrior'.

*As usual in Rajinikanth movies, S.P.Balasubramanium has given the
voice for
the intro song in this film composed by the music wizard A.R.Rahman.*

*Three other songs composed by A.R.R. also add elegance to the film
which
has the duration of one hour and fifty minutes.*

For Thotta Dharani, the acclaimed Art director, the experience in
working in
this movie turned out to be entirely different as he did not have to
work
with physical resources which are used to construct a set but just
had to
come out with designs which got the material and texture in the
hands of 3D
animation artists working under his guidance.

This attempt is sure to find followers once it gets released and
Kollywood
can be proud that the idea of 'Sultan The Warrior' was conceived and the
effort to make it true was dared in Chennai.

Even if the film shows a Rajinikanth made up by animators, the
opening and
the hype to this movie is going to be the same as like any other
film of the
 superstar.

That also is an honour that is meant exclusively for Rajini.

 Who can argue on that?

[arr] I copy / You copy / He copies.....

2008-05-22 Thread Dinesh Vaidya
Due to some members on this group, this debate has commenced once
again ( and BORINGLY going out of hand ). As usual experts will
dissect each and every note on their systems and come up with a
nano-strain which may show a note or a chorus has some similarity .

As far as I am concerned, I am thrilled enough to witness a rare
phenomenon of RAHMAN's 2 albums releasing simultaneously. We have
suffered the days when not more than one or 2 albums used to release
in a year so this 16'th year of Rahmans Film music career ( give
and take a few ) is yielding 15-16 releases ( probably ) is indeed a
cause for celebration, for me atleast...

We are not going to dilute our happiness by even countering the copy
arguments..

We, the PUNE fans are celebrating this MEGA RAHMAN YEAR by performing
our hit programme RAHMANIA by The WANDERING SOULS on 8'th Jan
evening. A detailed announcement will be made soon. All are invited !

Let's continue to enjoy RAHMAN's beautiful songs. And if copying is
the issue try and copy Rahman's humbleness, his talent, his
helping nature to social causes That will be something worth
copying...

Rahman RahE-maHAn !

I agree with you fully. Whatever method Wassim and AJ used to extract
voiceless ( And they were genuinely voiceless ) BGMs, is something
really worth learning.

Eventhough not voiceless extractions, we should appreciate the present

No harm in trying

who is putting in effort to rip BGMs, I only like the BGMs posted by

of quality and the fact that they are truly voiceless.

Although it is great to collect all the BGMs Vithur and others are
posting, they are not as enjoyable as the one kaissiom posts, because
they still have some voice in the background... which at least kills
my mood. I want to be able to put the BGM CD in the stereo, just like
how I put in a music CD, and enjoy the music. Sometime the ones with
the voice tells us exactly what is going on in the movie... so the
focus changes to the movie where I start visualizing it..not paying
much attention to the music, rather paying attention to the voice and
dialogues. This is why I prefer only truly voiceless BGMs.
Unfortunatley, kaissiom doesn't post all of his work.

Only if Vithur could start posting truly voiceless BGMs..it would be
dream come true. Or if kaissiom had never posted anything... we would
have appreciated vithur's efforts more greatly. Now I'm unsatisfied
with vithur's efforts only because I know it could be better. So,
forgive me if I'm hurting anyone's sentiments but the truth is we are

I also support this idea. Moreover I have a feeling that apart from
doing movies ( in which Rahman has to compose music to suit
the song situations in the movies), Rahman must be thinking more
about composing his own albums like he did for JGM / Vande Maataram /
Set me Free etc.

I am amazed by the compositions of SET ME FREE. I have made my
hardcore english POP music-loving friends listen to this album

some US POP female artist group or sometimes THE CARPENTERS !

2008-02-26 Thread Dinesh Vaidya
You are right Pravinder. This blogger thinks that he likes Rahman
songs. He may be, but further, he is NOT A RAHMANIAC. Once you are a
Rahmaniac, you IGNORE cast / language / state / religion and all
these factors which divide people.

It does not sadden me when someone critises Sadhana or Madhushree for
bad pronounciation, it does not irritate me when a fans comment
that Ashutosh and ARR combo is great is treated as a North versus
South issue. Inspite of listening to Rahman if such issues are
raised, then these guys probably are not true Rahmaniacs yet..

It pleases me that people like Pravinder, Gopal, Vijay, Amith,
Sirish, Durba, Vithur, Chord, Wassim, etc come together on this
platform and try to follow Rahman's philosophy of bringing all world
together and make it a harmonious and happy place.

You don't become a Rahmaniac by simply listening to Rahman's songs.
Rahman is trying to tell all of us something very important and if
you can catch that message from his songs, then you become a true
RAHMANIAC

You watch Rahman and you can 'read his message... one that follows
simplicity, humbleness, politenesss, peace, unity and love for your
motherland and family .

   Rahman's
contribution... if u go for Ashu-'s 1st directorial venture (Bazi
   starring
Amir Khan) am sure u'll be laughing at hearing the songs and BGMs.

Ashu killed a beautiful song called Yeh jo desh in Swadesh with
   poor
picturisation.

Mani's thinking is far beyond than Ashu's... I think no one other
   than Mani
can give an idea to compose songs in Chor Chor/thiruda thiruda.

The BGM of Dil Se...the song concept for Dile Se re, satrangee

its like awesome.
Take any song from Roja... in India rukmani rukmani is 1st song
   of its
kind... and think about the picturization.
What abt iruvar/Kannathil
   muthamittal/Bombay/Alepaudey/GURU??
The best thing of mani-arr combo is the freshness and new blend...
something never before heard... be it songs or bmg...so
   innovative

Innivation also noted in RDB BGMs..
I am telling u the diff between Ashu and Rakesh mehera in terms of
innovation:

The song Ghanana ghanana... the part Mana dharkaye bijuria in
   3 times
(lyrics may be wrong)...its called a Tihai in hindustani
   classical... but
what Rahman did in the last phrase he added mana mana dharkaye
bijuriawhich is technically not correct or out of beat... but
   musically
awesome and innovative... but I am sure...this is coming
   completely out of
Rahman's musical mind...no contribution from Ashu.

Now consider the song Khalbali ziddi... a totally misfit
   song to the
Rebels in 1940's India... but Ziddi.. portion is being played
   when Bhagat
Sing and his followers are fasting here Rakesh is injecting
   the song in
right place

Also take the moment the patriots are hiding and British police
chasing...and a rock kind of guiter is in background...just like
   telling
I'll break free...this is innovation, again Rahman is
injected by
Director

but in Ashu's movies songs and bgms are contemporary... real good
compositions but not surprising.

Anyway... all these are my personal feelings...

ARR-AG combo is only 3 movies old, whereas ARR-MR combo is how much
7, 8, may be 10 movies ? Bahot door tak jaana hai Ashutosh ko !

Both Ashutosh and Mani are great movie directors with good knowledge
of music but Mani Ratnam has huge body of quality work to show
against 3 of Ashu. Ashutosh has lots to catch up...

It is indeed an exciting thought that both these movie directors are

In my opinion, Mani did good justice to this song. However, subject
of this movie was so serious, the movie probably did not do too well
as a ManiRatnam movie should do. I have seen this movie many times on
my VCD, but I find many of my Chennai friends are totally at loss
when I name this movie.

If I can read Mani Ratnam's mind, the idea of using the song at the
begining of this movie probably was to show the calm status of life
before the cyclone of war.

I have a ringtone of this song and use this as alarm sound. Getting
up in the morning to this sound is pure bliss.

Re: [arr] Time now to accept ARR - Ashutosh combo as No. 1 in India [ Shankar ?]

2008-02-21 Thread Dinesh
Nope. i totally disagree !!!

1st of all, i think u have 4gotten the GREAT Iruvar movie, which had
superb songs [Narumugaye, Pookodiyin, Hello Mr. Edhirkatchi,
Aayirathil Naan Oruvan, Kannai Katti Kollathe, Vennila Vennila] BGM.
there is this BGM, for Mohanlal and Aishu [1st wife], and the BGM when
Monanlal was provoked to become the Minister. if u ask me, that film
is ENOUGH to proof that ARR - Mani is 1 of the best in India and NO
Swades or Lagaan can overtake it, IMO ofcource. Well, i have not
watched JA yet, but Swades Lagaan was good. but never did gave me
the feel that 'im living' along with the movie.

What about Alaipayuthey Kannathil Muttamittal ?!! those had BGMs and
songs that were altered for the characters/scenes. Im guessing its
either u 4gotten these great films or either u never watch them
propaly. :)

And where is DIR Shankar in the list??? this is so unfair for me,
ARR-Shankar is the best COMBO in India. Not only Shankar manage to
bring this peppy side of ARR, but he gives ARR songs a brand. He
simply spends crores on 1 ARR song. Shows how he appriciates them
something i hardly see any dir is willing to spend that much of money
on a single song.

on the BGM section, Jeans, Indian, Mudhalvan, Sivaji had some BGMS
that is 1 of a kind and something that u cant find in other ARR
films.Hmmm... Jeans theme in the Airport where Aishu is going back
to India, but she wanna confess her love b4 she leaves, but many
things stopping her, and the BGM comes there was simply soul
stiring.. and many more in the Film . Indian, do i need to say
more??? Tell 1 part in the film which the BGM was not GRAND :)
Mudhalvan... the Chant is enough to say it all :)

Well, i guess diff people diff taste. And this is from my point of
view, being an ARR fan for almost 10 years...

Hey... no fair... haha... yea, im glad Madhushree sung in Telugu, but
i will be more than happy if she rendered the Tamil version as well.

Yea... Sadhana S. too sang the Telugu version of Mana Mohana isnt it,
she sounded good there compared to the Tamil version. Just a doubt,
was Sadhana S. by any chance not feeling well when singing the Tamil
version?? as some parts her voice were cracking. On the other hand the
Telugu version she was perfect.

Madhushree is indeed a gift for music lovers. Her voice has this magic
to me, that whenever im angry or upset, her songs will somehow make me
calm down im able to be in a correct state of mind. :)

But wanna know what song when i listen, i will have this smile that
stretches for miles?? haha, its Naine Milake - Saathiya. Where both my
Music Goddess [ Sadhana S. Madhushree ] have sung together in my
fav MD's composition. Its just Magical!! Both have sung it in a manner
that Who is better which leaded to both giving their 100% effort in
that song and making it sound extraodinaire !!

Is that song popular up in the North??

[arr] JA Review by Musicindiaonline - ...breathtaking is the word...

2008-02-20 Thread Dinesh Vaidya
Following is the review of Jodhaa Akbar appeared on
Musicindiaonline.com at following link

http://www.musicindiaonline.com/ar/i/movie_name/9539/1/

-
Movie Review : 'Jodhaa-Akbar': Breathtaking tale of love, war,
secularism

Producer: Ashutosh Gowariker, Ronnie Screwvala
Director: Ashutosh Gowariker
Cast: Hrithik Roshan, Aishwarya Rai, Sonu Sood, Ila Arun, Niketan
Dheer
Music: A.R. Rahman

There is Hrithik Roshan as Akbar, in full regalia, watching a
traditional sufi qawwalli when he suddenly goes into a spiritual
trance and joins the qawwalls for a dance to divinity.

This historic moment that takes us beyond the dynasties of Mughal
history, couldn't have been possible without Hrithik's amazing
capacity to infiltrate the portals of divinity through dance
movements.

As we traverse the simply stunning spectacle of Ashutosh Gowariker's
historical epic, often wonder-eyed and open-mouthed, we end up
looking at Akbar as interpreted by Hrithik rather than as what the
Mughal legend might have been.

The body language of the sword-wielding poet-warrior reminds us of
Mel Gibson in 'Braveheart' and Tom Cruise in 'The Last Samurai'
rather than Prithviraj Kapoor who played Akbar in K. Asif's undying
classic 'Mughal-e-Azam' with such imposing imperiousness.

In terms of the creative and visual terrain covered in the three-
hour, 20-minute journey, Gowariker's vision subsumes a reined-in
wealth of ideas and images into an opulent but aesthetic tale of
love, romance, war, hatred and secularism.

The director transports us into an era when brother battled brother
in bitter rage. But love blossomed in the heart of a secular Muslim
emperor who married a fiercely individualistic Rajput princess and
allowed her space to be her own person.

The narrative patterns Akbar's chequered life of love and wars
through the various characters who influence his mind and heart. To
begin with, we see the young Akbar being moulded into a violent
person, brimming with ideas of revenge and acquisition by his
senapati-mentor Bairam Khan.

In a frightening burst of vengeful brutality, we see Akbar ordering
his soldiers to throw a stubborn adversary head-first to death.

But all said and done, Gowariker's Akbar is a man who'd rather live
in peace than wallow in war. Alas, Akbar lived in violent battle-
friendly times.

Then there's the complex relationship that Akbar shares with his
foster mother, played by Ila Arun. But the friction between the
foster mother and Akbar's new bride could be straight out of Indra
Kumar's 'Beta'!

Gowariker also purposely brings in kitschy elements from commercial
cinema to provide a kind of warm accessibility to his historic tale.

The filming of the durbar song 'Azeem-o-shaan shahenshah' is the last
word in spectacle. Breathtaking is the word that often comes to mind
in this tale of vibrant valour and vitality.

Never before have we seen battle sequences so spectacular and
energetic in Hindi cinema. Take the opening sequence where the battle
lines close ranks in such passionate movements that the audience
almost feels trampled in the middle.

Kiran Deohans' swift but sublime cinematography is of international
calibre, at par with 'Gladiator' or 'Braveheart'. A.R. Rahman's music
is a bit of a letdown though. Veering between authenticity and
listener-friendliness, it's a bit of a mellow mishmash signifying
none of those enchanting echoes of Jodha and Akbar's ever-lasting
romanticism.

The love story occupies the pride of place in 'Jodhaa-Akbar'. The
sudden marital alliance between the benign king and the free-spirited
Rajput princess, their post-marriage courtship, the misunderstanding
that cuts through their growing fondness, and the final and
irreversible reconciliation, are portrayed with exquisite fluidity.

Not once does the director allow the inherent opulence of his theme
to overpower the love that grows between them.

Hrithik's pleading, poetic eyes in a warrior's face define the
historic romance as much as Aishwarya's swan-like grace and
passionate individualism. After 'Dhoom 2', this pair surely whips up
a Mughlai feast of passion and romance.

Watch 'Jodhaa-Akbar' as a splendidly spiced-up slice of history. Or
just savour the chemistry between the warrior and the princess, with
hundreds of junior artistes, elephants, rabbits and parrots
accompanying the couple's journey from secularism to eternity.

[arr] JA Tamil Mana Mohana by Sadhana How happy I am !

2008-02-19 Thread Dinesh Vaidya
No offense to the talented Bela Shende for the Hindi version, but the
moment I heard that song, I had thought to myself, this song is fit
for Sadhana alone.

(May be I am biased for Sadhana's crystal clear yet soft voice...)

My mental prayers were heard by Rahman probably and I find Sadhana
returning with a touching, soul stirring and direct-from-the-heart
performance with Tamil Mana Mohana. Sheer bliss

I was worried earlier when for successive movies Sadhana did not appear
in Rahman list. Now I am very happy..

When did Sadhana sung for Rahman last ? Was that Godfather ?

[arr] Re: JA Tamil Mana Mohana by Sadhana How happy I am ! - Not Me!

2008-02-19 Thread Dinesh
it was a happy moment for me too, when i saw Sadhana Sargam name
printed for Mana Mohana in Tamil. though i was looking forward to
Shreya Ghoshal or Madhushree to render the song in tamil.but i was
glad it was in a 'safe' hands [Sadhana] if its not by Madhu or Shreya
G. but the moment i heard the song, my dreams were shattered. she had
NO emotion in the song. She struggles in many portion in that song.
Some words, which needed more emotion like Yen Sogangal Theerpaya?
Yen Dhagathai Theerpaya? where she falls flat there and many others.
u can see that she has sung it without knowing the meaning well. i
believe its a number u singing to the Lord in a crying state with ur
pure devotion. Bela Shende was excellent in that manner. We could
close our eyes feel the Lord. but with Sadhana, all i was waiting
was when is the song is gonna end.

ps : i know people r gonna bash be up here, becoz i know its tough to
convery ur opinion here if its gonna be negative. many dun have the
attitude to accept both negative positive. and ive seen people who
give some negatives view on ARR here were bashed up by many with harsh
words. well, i hope many feels the same with me on the Mana Mohana tamil.

many will trash me next coz i listed Madhushree to sing a tamil
number. Well, 1 things for sure, she is probably bad in Tamil diction,
but she never KILLS THE EMOTION. She can render the song well and lift
the song enough with her EMOTION though her tamil diction is bad.
She probably could have done a whole lot better work for Mana Mohana
in Tamil.

A.R.Rahman, please use more of Madhushree in your tamil songs please.

I give you the list of BGM scores I have. Those published by KAISSOM
and AJ also the recent ones by Vithur are complete movies ( means BGM
files in excess of 10 per movie ), and remaining are a couple of
pieces from the movies.

Alaipayudhe / Anbe Aaruyire / Bombay / Jeans / Doli Sajake Rakhana /
Kaadhalar Dhinam / Kannathil Mudhalmittal / Roja / Minsara Kannavu /
Rhythm / Sangamam / Mangal Pandey / Iruvar / Boys / Swades /
Uzhavan / Lagaan / Yuvaa / Dil Se / Indian / Indira / Kandukondain /
Lakeer / May Maadam / Meenaxi / Mudhalvan / Padaiyappa / Taal /
Kanangal Kaidhu Sei / Pudhiya Mugham / Parthaale Parvasam / Bhagat
Singh / Saathiya ( how it should be different that Alaipayudhe ?) /
En Swasa Katrae / RDB AJ / RDB Kaissom / RDB Someone else / One 2 ka
4 / Dil hi Dil men / Kadhal Virus / Thenali / Rangeela / WOHE /
Baba / SOK / Guru / Shivaji / ATM / Thiruda T / Godfather / Puthiya
Mugham / Tehzeeb / Gentleman / Taal Vithur / Kadhalaan

It is worth checking with Wassim (Kaissom) and A Joshi (AJ) on their
technique of making GENUINE VOICELESS BGMs. Truely professional stuff
they had released when both of them had a great run on this group, I
think 1-2 years back and then suddenly the flow stopped..

[arr] (Semi ARR) Open letter to Ashutosh Gowarikar THANK YOU ASHU !

2008-02-17 Thread Dinesh Vaidya
I watched Jodhaa Akbar yesterday night. I can only say that I am
speechless ! This movie is by far the BEST I have seen in a long long
time, to be precise after Swades. Now call this as a biased statement
of a Rahmaniac or admirer of your talent but believe me, all those
negative reports you might have read about JA are all FAKE. This
movie is Awesome !

Dear Ashutosh, Take a bow !! Be proud of a well deserved hat-trick !!

Contrary to all those pseudo-intellectual critical reports, this
movie appealed to me for many many reasons,

1. Rahman's Songs are already famous, but the BGM's ? My god ! Out of
the world ! I want to request you, Please come up with special
edition of BGM score, especially for us, the Rahmaniacs. Moreover you
have done justice to Rahmans songs.

2.Another important thing is all actors have literally lived their
performance, including Hritik and Ash. I would say, like Shahrukh in
Swades, this movie will be remembered as a special turning point for
both the lead actors. For others, All their characters are well
drafted so much that in the end, you remember each and every one of
them.

3.The detailing to minutest matters is really noteworthy. At no stage
in the movie I could feel that something is fake or not correct. You
and the art director deserve special mention for this. The swords and
the shields are truly what they are !

4. Costumes and jewellery has been done with great care and the
grandeur of Mughal Empire really comes up well. And the sets ?
AUTHENTIC !

5. A special mention about the glorious and well deserved praise you
have used for the Rajputs. Not only they are the pride of India,
their struggle and honour in defending their land comes out extremely
well in your movie. Those who are opposing your movie are plain
ignorant.

6. In the end of the 3 hrs 20 minutes, the movie length, or the more
of it, was NOT AT ALL an issue. In fact I can not single out one or
couple of scenes which can be cut. For those who are cribbing about
the movie length, I can only say that there is no rule on length of a
movie is it ? Is there any restriction on number of pages in a book ?
NO ? Then you can not call a movie long or short ! Period !

7. Dialogues are apt, screenplay and editing is top class.

8. Your quest to go deep into the subject and do thorough research is
seen in each and every frame, I would list following scenes which
standout as directors special,
a.During Khwaja Mere Khwaja, at the near end of the song, Akbar
gets up and joins the whirling Darwish team.
   b. Akbar and Jodha sleep side by side with a curtain in between
when Akbar says sorry to Jodhaa. Jodhaa pretends to be sleeping. Next
shot she just about opens her eyes and there is a glorious smile on
her face, like Monalisa..
   c. During same scene, when Jodhaa decides to sleep, she uses a
hand-fan to douse the oil lamps.
   d. Akbar visits Jodhas's temple, and seeing her footware
outside, removes his and then enters in.
   e. Akbar during the Azeem-o-Shaan song, goes out on horseback
amongst his subjects, but is constantly surrounded by a ring made by
his trusted guards.
   f. After serving food to Akbar, when Jodhaa stops him from
eating under the pretext of salt, her glance towards Ila Arun speaks
10 words !

All in all, I loved this movie and can not wait for its DVD and BGMs.
Kindly do not delay these 2 items anymore !

For those so-called-critics who gave funny numbers ( especially the
Times of India and Indian Express, because I read those yesterday
morning ), I would sympathize with them because probably they went in
to see your movie assuming it as DHOOM 3. My advice to you is, kindly
ignore such critics and their comments, they do not know what and why
they are writing it in the first place !

My verdict on the movie ? FANTASTIC / AWESSOME / GREAT piece of work.
A collectors item indeed

I am eagerly looking forward to your next movie, with AR Rahman
ofcourse !

Keep up the good work !
