Especially the Mumbai station will be airing an exclusive programme
on
THE WANDERING SOULS team who has a special distinction of performing
 ALL RAHMAN SONGS show.

Today, the Radio City studio recorded the songs section / samples of
the 6'th Jan programme and this is what we performed,

 1. Bombay theme flute piece Tu Hi Re flute piece (Instrumental)
 2. Vellai Pookkal - in HINDI / MARATHI and TAMIL (Vocal)
 3. Yun Hi Chala Chal - (Vocal)
 4. Kehna Hi kya - (Vocal)
 5. Khwaja Mere Khwaja - (Vocal)

All vocal songs were performed with accompaniment of only an
accoustic
guitar, harmonium and flute in bits and pieces and (only for
Khwaja )a
 Tabla !

Believe me, with so little instrumentation, the songs were
stunningly
melodious and we learnt a new facet of Rahman's music..

[arr] Re: True translation of Chalka Chalka

2008-10-23 Thread durba bhattacharjee
Hi Pravinder,

Thanks a ton for the true translation and explanation of the song.
Even I was also thinking of writing a translation to this. But I
didnt know that 'Paathi' means cow dung cakeI was actually
searching for this word's meaning.

Now I would like to suggest one thing. I think its not 'Tulsi waali
paati rah gayi' but its 'Tulsi waali baati rah gayi'. Baati means
small lamp that is shown every evening to the Tulsi plant. I think
she's syaing that she couldnt show lamp to the Tulasi plant as she
had to get ready for wedding.

 Hi Neetika, Lali and all,
I finally had to come and translate the controversial lines (in the
group) for you all, with due respect. Because I come from a small
village of Haryana (Rajasthan border), I understand almost
everything
conveyed in the song and I hope that will solve all the confusion.
 Here we go:

First of all understand this; when a girl is going to be married in
the village, she goes through a process of rituals. Before few days
of
the marriage day almost everyday women from village come to her
house
and sing folk songs. Also, during this process she does not stop her
day to day activities and keeps doing household work; even on the
day
of marriage. She only stops doing her normal activities when its
time
to get ready for the marriage. Now while singing the first stanza of
Chalka Chalka Re, she is just mentioning the fact that just a while
ago she was doing her normal work and now she suddenly had to get
changed and get married (7 phere) and go to her husband's house. She
is emotional and says the lines like 'Choolha main jalaati rah gayi'
means she was in middle of process of lighting the fire and they
asked
her to get ready and leave all that work.
Now Stanza 1 line by line:

 Poley poley pairon se chali
(I walked very elegantly, means she put less pressure on her feet
while walking, for example when we walk on a wet Flor trying to not
 make it dirty)

 Babul teri chhoti thi gali
(Father, your street was narrow. She is giving the reason of first
line now, why she walked elegantly)

 Geetey mere peechhay rah gaye
(I don't understand what 'Geetey' is. Whatever it is, she left them
behind. She is sad that she had leave them behind)

 Paathiyon ke neechey rah gaye
(She says she left them [Geetey] below the pile or stack
of 'Paathi'.
Now Paathi, as far as I understand, is 'Gobar ke oople'. See how
they
let the waste of cows and buffaloes get dried, and then they burn it
 for gas in the villages)

 Gaiyya meri pyaasi rah gayi
(She had to leave her cow thirsty. Because she had to hurry and get
ready because 'Baaraat' was about to arrive.)

 Tulsi waali paati rah gayi
(All of you were confusing the word 'Paati'; its not 'vaadee'. Paati
means leaf. Either she could not pluck the Tulasi leaves [to worship
god] or she did not have time to use the Tulasi leaves she had
already
 plucked to use in Pooja)

 Choolha main jalaati rah gayi
(She was in process of lighting the fire, and then she had to leave
it
 and rush to get ready).

I hope it solves a lot of confusion.
I also hope that it confirms how deep is the knowledge of Gulzar
Saab
about the subject he is writing about.
Guys, none of his lyrics are meaningless, its only that we don't
know
 them well.
 He writes gems not songs.

At the time of marriage, when she is supposed to leave the house,
she is not able to bear the separation..and she is saying..

of the naughtiness and flavour..but we cant say that Hindi lyrics

You are the first faith, you are the first style of life

You are beaming like the glowing sunshine

Its you who appeared in my dreams all night
Tujhe Ojhal Hawa Se, Sawaan Ghata Se

The same scene with Bengali teleserials also. Sometime back when I
was in Kolkata, I noticed almost all serials use some music or other
from ARR's composition. It was funny. Though I cant remember all,
some of the pieces that I heard were The horses and Dacoit Duel from
WOHE, Piano theme from 1947, some Swades tune (cant remember which
one) and Bombay Theme.

 Dear All,

All the Teleserials in Tamil ( esp) are using ARR 's BGMs in
 their
   serials.. Some notable ones are

   a) Urvasi Song - Kadhalan . The initial chords are reproduced
as
 it is
   b) BABA Rap... - A very similar rap comes in Arasi ( a serial
at
 9 30 PM...
with only wordings different ). The RAP is very very very
similar
   c) SPirit of rangeela

Even Aravind AM had observed this before, and had posted this...

Even Ilayaraja 's most famous Mouna Ragam BGM has been used in
 serials..

I think all these are done by a person by name Kiran. He should
 be a
Rahmaniac like all of us... having entire collection of BGMs of
 Boss.

[arr] Re: JTYJN very disappointing.

2008-07-06 Thread durba bhattacharjee
I beg to differ. I think JTYJN was a big time disappoinment. The
movie was ok with some good hilarious scenes but it was clear that
the director has no understanding of making a song sequence. He just
wasted the songs. For example, Tu Bole starts at the very next scene
after Aditi song ends. We havnt gone to see Chitrahar, right? Then
why two songs in two consecutive scenes? So naturally, Tu Bole comes
with the fate of being chopped off after 30 seconds or so. The same
fate with Jane Tu Meri Kya Thi (Sukhwinder version). The situation of
the song arrives at the middle of another song After the first
para of Kahin To (the most ill traeted song), the opening music of
Jane Tu Meri Kya Thi (Sukhwinder version) starts!!! And it was quite
obvious that this song would never take off, for that simple reason,
we are note gone to see Chitrahar.

But one thing I really don't understand why this same story repeats
with ARR again and again? Why his songs being treated so badly in
almost every film? Hindi film is always identified with music and
dance. In last two years whatever movies I have seen and liked are
full with songs. Except Aamir and Sarkar Raj, the movies like JWM,
TZP, Omkara, Metro, etc all has good music and good song sequences
too. The directors of these movies not only succeeded to get good
songs from their MDs but also gave their movies a different dimension
by using the songs the most beautiful way. Then why this never
happens with ARR? The last time I saw ARR's music being used very
well was RDB.

While I can appreciate the concern as ARR's fan, I think we shud be
realistic in our expectations about treatment of songs in movie. I
thought Jaane tu felt like bit stretched in terms of time and two
more
full songs wud have made considerable damage to the movie. I am
happy
that Abbas got two nice songs from Rahman( even though they were
just
meant to be background) and it is not that those songs didn't reach
 public as well.
I am looking forward for future movies from same combo and def Abbas
is here to stay as a director. And yes ARR has probably found a
young
director who makes cool movies and he has been missing such
directors
 for too long.

to
hear much from ARR in terms of background music. But i know that
situation was like that in the film where you dont actually need
background music. But who wants to see the film i went there for ARR
and i am happy that ARR has done brilliant job in terms of music.
But
director had done injustice to his music. And more thing the
director
has also edited Jaane Tu Meri Kya Hai from the film. I think ARR
should not work with those people who does not understand his music.
My rating to this movie is 2/5. ARR's music 5/5. Because it was only

The Guy Girl are separated, away from each other.
Through the song, they inquire about each other's well being

how much they miss each other.

live in other parts of India where Tamil cds are available. Ask them to

[arr] Rahmania Show - My Experience!

2008-06-09 Thread durba bhattacharjee
Being a member of this group, the concept of Rahmania show by The
Wandering Souls (TWS) is not new to me. As I failed to attend to last
year's show, this year I had no reason to give it a miss. But as I
was making my journey to Pune, little did I know what I was going to
experience. The tremendous dedication and effort that these people
have shown to master even the minutest note of a song can dwarf any
one's claim of his/her being the most-devoted-fan-of-ARR. Each and
every person involved in the Rahmania performance that evening was
a `True Rahmaniac' and they proved that with their magical and
marvelous performance.

Professional to the core, the TWS members gave no moment to complain.
The entire show was flawless with no delay in-between two songs.
While all the singers demand applause, Pallavi Paranjape needs
special mention. She performed probably three most challenging songs
of the evening – Chandralekha (in Tamil), Mayya Mayya and Shakalaka
Baby – BD version. She is an amazing performer with awesome energy
and voice range. Jasraj Joshi is another singer who calls for debate
that whether his singing is more commanding or his cool hairdo. The
trio Hrishikesh Ranade-Ashutosh Joshi-Jasaraj Joshi simply took the
stage on fire with their electrifying Yu Hi Chala Chal. Hrishikesh
Ranade is the golden voice of the concert, never missing even a
single tone.

But for me the most magical moment of the entire concert was the
instrumental version of Swades by Pramod Gaekwad. The another ever-
lasting memory of the concert is the performance of Khwaja by the
trio. But unless and until I mention the performance of flutist
Satyajit Kelkar, this review is not complete. He is amazing with his
flute.

People who have missed this show, wake up. TWS ended their show with
a promise to come back again this July. So, hey guyz/galz, specially
those who live in Mumbai/Maharashtra can definitely plan for a trip
down to Pune and take a plunge in the trance of Rahmania. Believe me,
it will definitely take your heart away.

Regards

Durba

  First Half

  1. Azeem-O-shaan Shehenshah

  2. Roja Janeman

  3. Khalbali

We had a 2000+ audience who were rooting for Once-More for so
many
times….We also displayed the PFMB books and informed the
audience about the
work you are doing with UN for poverty alleviation through your
ARRahman
Foundation. I am sure the audience understood the MAN behind the
music this
  time.

We can not speak for ourself, I think our audience will probably
say
something about us. After performing the RAHMANIA show for more
than 10
times now, the group can certainly vouch that it is a very very
challenging
task to reproduce the essence / feel of Rahman sound. We have
been trying to
  reach that

 Friends,
I do not know how much I am qualified or not qualified to say some
thing on
this knowledge forum. Though I am with the group for months on,
this is my
first posting. My favorites are almost all the songs of ARR. As a
matter of
fact I am, eminently placed to get disqualified from belonging to
this
Group. I do not know Hindi. I do not Know Tamil. I do not have any
knowledge
of Music. Above all this, I am aged all of 72 years. But I have a
gut
feeling about and instant reaction to good tunes, good
instrumentation and
 calm, soothing and vibrant music.
That day ages back when I first heard songs from Roja, I
instinctively knew
that this gentleman arrived to thrill us forever and take us on a
musical
raid of un-scalable and unimaginable heights. He elevated cine
music to
 unattainable heights.
I have a good collection of his Tamil songs which I love many, I
like all.
Daily, I listen to these songs for 2 to 4 hours. They refresh me,
keep me
fit and energetic. Arr's uniquness, according to me, I repeat,
according to
 me,, lies in:
 1. Treating voice [male or female] as yet another instrument, to be
played
 upon.
 2. Each of his song is a symphony. To reach those heights and lows
in 3/4
minutes is possible only to him.
 3. He is a master at creating heavenly interludes which are more
often than
not are the highlights of many songs.
 4. I had never heard any one using drums [or allied instruments],
shehnai,
[I am not worried about exact names, as long as I enjoy them],
flute to
this advantage. How he introduces weaving them in to the voice,
takes them,
leaving the voice behind, to a solo crescendo and taper off, very
effectively, yet all in a fraction of a minute, which is humanly
impossible.
He is Blessed, if not he himself is Divine.
 5. I divide the Indian cine music era in to two segments. PreARR
and PostARR
eras. In the PreARR era we used to ask who sang that song? Rafi or
Kishore.
Now we ask who composed it? That is the power duly acquired and got
by our
 honored ARR.
I have my own two Play-lists of ARR's Tamil songs. One I play in
whichever
mood I am in. These songs are level-all gems. The second list I
play when I
feel I am in good and high spirit!
In other words, what I am saying is that I adore those, around 70,
Tamil
songs tuned by ARR, even though I do not know the language.
Proving, if
proof is needed, music has no language. Rather It is ARR who proved
it
through millions like me. Let us not enter in to Lilliputian
arguments over
that GIANT Musician whose presence amongst us we are fortunate to
have.
The Beauty is I hear his songs even when I am not listening to
them!!!
Thanks to those haunting and teasing melodies and tunes.

Re: [arr] A.R.Rahman Unpopulared Movie Names

2008-06-03 Thread durba bhattacharjee
Well said Rawat.

There are more 'unpopulared' (unpopular) sound tracks by ARR like

  Mr Romeo
  Love Birds
  Khel Khiladi Ka
  Tu Hi Mera Dil

But I would never tag them as unpopular or failed albums. The fact that they
have come out of Tamil Nadu, got dubbed into Hindi and that those movies never
released, speaks for the extreme popularity of ARR itself.

Otherwise, for people like me, who stays millions miles away from TN and who
has no conection to Tamil language, would never get the chance to listen to
them.

I have heard all of them and am proud to have them in my colection.

 Hi,

 *Yodha - 1992*
 *Gangmaster - 1994*
 *Mona Lisa - 1997*

The above were dubbed to hindi from other languages to cash on ARR's
popularity, I think first two movies probably didn't get release in
Hindi and though I had seen video's of third one's songs, i still don't
remember having hearing about the movie. So these are not exactly ARR's
failures but badly planned projects.

 *Vishwa Vidhaata - 1997*

Sad that this album didn't become popular. Its Kal nahin jo kya hai aaj
wo is such a lovely song, one of my favs. Kaliyon ke khilne se was also
quite good. This album was ARR's high, not his failure.

 *Fiza - 2000*

It added insult to injury when this album's best and most popular song
Mehboob Mere was sadly not by our man but by Anu Malik. In any case,
ARR's only song in the album was a religious Piya Hazi Ali and was a
lovely sufi rendition but religious songs don't really become that
popular. Failure but not ARR's.

 *Love You Hamesha - 2001*

Sad that it had one of the last lyrics by the veteran Anand Bakshi, but
didn't give any indication of his greatness. Mehboob could have penned
much finer lyrics than the cheapness in botal tod de and sone ka
palang. Indeed ARR's failure.

 *Lakeer - Forbidden Lines -2004*

This would remain as an example of excess hype not getting met in the
delivered product, be it movie or the music. ARR's first attempt at
Punjabi music in Nachle didn't make the world say balle-balle, and his
first attempt on cheerleaders music in rozana was just a dumb squib.
Though he could do better with Punjabi music in RDB's title song, it is
sad that ARR didn't attempt at rozana again. Indeed ARR's failure.

You can add Muthu also in the list. outright ugly lyrics when the song
speaks of making love 4 times a day as the method to keep wife happy. It
was vulgur, it was cheap. Indeed ARR's failure.

You can add Priyanka also which didn't find much takers which is so
hurtingly sad because it would be one of the best album of ARR. Khili
Chaandni and Thoda Thoda Pyar were heavenly and I don't think ARR has
given Ye Jaati Paati Kaisi type of song in any other album. This was
one of ARR's all time bests, not his failure.

As the whole world may know-Rajasthan, The incredible state of

Celebration. The weeklong festival had people all over the world
coming in to participate.
Jaipur-With its rich and colourful past, resplendent with tales of
valour and bravery, breathtaking beauty, stunning jewelry, over a
hundred feet long fort walls, precious stone-embedded palaces,
the `Rajputs' as quoted-who use swords to wear the `tilak' on their
foreheads and with a reputation of being included as a city with a
striking knowledge of astronomy and geometric planning had to
rewrite its History. All of the aforementioned took a bow-when one
musician entered this city, with innumerable adjectives. Little did
they know, that all the History that is talked about would look like
the smallness of an ant, when the Azeem O shaan Shahenshah himself
would rewrite History. The whole city halted when this man sang. And
they continued singing even after he left them. Who heard them?!
Gomtesh, Navas, Pavan and myself heard Jaipuri's sing Ae mere
darbar main khwaja, when hours before they sang the title tracks
of `welcome' and `race'.
A gtalk talk with Gomzy, a little bit of googling on Jaipur and
tickets were booked. Bags were packed-with clothes, cameras and
luck.Lots of them. Jaipur gave us a warm welcome indeed-in the
literal sense also, and the regular sandstorms ensured that we took
baths at regular intervals. The autos here are twice the size I see
here, and is adorned with all the possible mythical figures.Jaipur!!
The weeklong celebration had a lot of artists coming in-prior to
ARR's performance, were Sunidhi Chauhan, Rahat Fateh Ali Khan and a
few others. They all seemed like a cup of water in front of the
might oceans when ARR's show happened.
The group that came together was Vithur, Gomzy, Navas, Pavan and
myself. It surely brought back memories of the Bangalore, Delhi and
Chennai concert.
The stage setup was amazing. The lighting was excellent. And this
time, I believe ARR had the most rigourous practise session.Till
5.30 in the morning!!
We decided that the next day we load ourselves with cameras and go
sight seeing-and make full use of the long journey undertaken. But
God made different plans for us. The long prayers and planning,
worked out. We went to the Hotel where ARR was put up. Thanks to
understanding people in the ARR family, we got a chance to meet him.
I had the great opportunity to walk with ARR from his room to the
lobby where the rest of us waited. And what he asked me on the way
was perhaps the most awaited moment of my life .Hey, do you want to
come for Namaaz with me?? I was stunned. I had no time to even
repeat the question in my mind. I said Yes, of course
obviuosly. But first-he stopped by to meet the group. He spoke to us
for a few minutes. Very relaxed, composed and calm he was. He
volunteered for photographs, autographs, handshakes and hugs.
Gaurav, a finalist in the airtel super singer, was there in the
hotel. He came, hoping he'll get a chance to get a glimpse of
ARR.But what he got from ARR, just remains testimony to the fact
that ARR is the greatest and most humble. ARR recognised him. He
gave him an autograph and asked him-Hey, do you want to sing with
me tonight!? Now, this is what I call FATE. Gaurav was stunned. So
were we. So was the world. He requested to sir that he'd sing for
Pukar, and the gentleman musician smiled and said ok, see you at
the venue .Cried Gaurav.Such was the greatness in the man.
Then came my moment. My most awaited moment. To have rubbed
shoulders with Rahman and to get deep into prayers. To read Namaaz
with him, that too on a Friday, which we believe is a like a mini
Eid. To have read the Du'a with him. To have wished the angels
together. Rahman no doubt imbibed in me a great sense of Sufism
through his music, but this prayer surely made me a more spiritual
person in life. Rahman would close his eyes and not open till his
prayer got over. Dressed in a white kurtha and a green topi-ARR won
the hearts of the people around him. And God. That was the man AR
Rahman. I wish to follow this, with the magician musician AR Rahman.

Evening.8 pm. The police in jaipur were shocked. They failed to
understand that for years, they never saw such a huge gathering in
this city, what had made the rather conserved people of jaipur come
out and break

It was 'Spirit of Unity Concerts for National Integration' airing every Sunday
at 10 in the morning. I used to watch it religiously even before I heard Roja.
I never cared to check the credit list at the end to see who composed the title
music, though I used to like it very much. It was only after the 'roja
experience' one day when the program started I thought that it must be by ARR.
Then only I checked the credits at the end and came to know that it was by A.
R. Rahman. As far as I can remember, he was not credited as 'Dileep Kumar'.
Later probably they had felicitated him and included the footage also during
the begining or ending credits.

I used to wait for the part where BGM comes, the one which is the
 beggining of Roja Janeman song.

Consciously i started listening ARR from Zubeidaa.
The song used to come on radio and i loved it.
Later on i found out that it was a Shyam Benegal film, the director
was my most favorite one. Because of that i bought Cassette.
Came to know about A R Rahman and the process started; the end of
which was me becoming a Rahmaniac.

Got this idea, when i was reading review of Roja music in a website.
Especially from Gopal / Vijay, would love to know your first

  Let me start...
I happened to know about ARR very very late. I was in Class 9 i

It was an evening, i had returned from School. There was a program in

interlude, made me shiver in the Kashmiri snow, i really felt a cold
when the chill sound splashes along with the beat... Wow man... and
so my next question was, who is the composer. Next comes the
surprise, a 25 year old young chap... And i ran out to the music shop
  to grab a cassette.

I was flattened and still breathing his music.

And i soaked in his music since then... I was called as Rahman in
my college hostel. Siraj would know that...
Where ever I go since then, ppl talking to me for 2 days will know
that i'm a fan of ARR. That much i talk on ARR. :)

Its been 17 yrs now. I cherish the times i run to music shops to grab
the first cassette on almost all releases. Now, at the age of 30,
i've somehow lost the habit of grabbing the first CD/Cassette, may be
not getting time or out of reach, but the passion towards his music,

2008-02-29 Thread durba bhattacharjee
It's a wonderful thread started by Bergin (???)I read it when he posted it
first but couldnt reply. It's good that the topic has come up again.

Just like Bergin (???), I heard arr for the first time in the curtain raiser
program for national award that year. It was the starting piece of Yeh Haseen
Vadiyaan. Madhu looking amazed at the snow covered peaks and valleys. At that
time except for the music piece, nothing registered in my mind as Roja was a
Tamil movie and then Tamil was similar a language as Hebrew now.

After some time I saw the interview of ARR in Surabhi and again nothing
registered in my mind. I was in school then and I hardly could understand
English conversation.

Some months later when me and my family happened to watch the dubbed version
of Roja quite accidentally, and when the Yeh haseena Vadiyan started, I was on
the verge of my chair, as the tune was very familiar, something very lovable.

Only it was then when I started to hunt my brain hard and started to
recollect all the 'unregistered' events and came to knwo the man - a r rahman.

It was a wonderful write up. I think you also posted a write-up on Delhi

detailed narration of the concert. Thank you very much.

  naztitude [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote:
To most of us-The Private concert concept was a mystery and not well
understood, but soon we learnt it all. To put it plain, ARR and
troop were a part of a program-that had more events to the evening,
in contrary to an exclusive ARR live in concert-that has three hours
and more of ARR!!
This time-Marg, a construction firm had their celebration with ARR
as chief guest and also as performer (With the gang obviously!).The
show opened with an AV presentation of the company and followed by
the Chairman of the group, Mr.Reddy who presented a momento to Boss.
Note: Boss came in dressed with a simple white shirt and was his
usual calm-self. The event followed by a Classical-guitar
performance led by Mr. Prasanna and our dear Keith Peters. Honestly,
the crowd could not wait for the man's entry-obviously, who can when
you know he is going to be up there any moment.
Finally, the moment arrived. The man returned to the stage-not as
chief guest, but as performer this time-and the next two hours to
follow, Rahman touched favorites from Roja to RDB, Guru to JA!
Blaaze-started the show with his regular hiphop approach!

It goes beyond doubts, the performance was mindblowing. This was
ARR's first concert of the year and he said he was lucky to perform
in his hometown. The stage was set. Three levels of the stage was
made to make the show interesting. Every song was perfect,
unmatchable quality-after all there is a lot of hardwork that gets
behind an ARR concert.

The performance lasted for around two hours-and breakless. The list
of singers included Hariharan, Chitra, Blaaze, Chinmayee, Naresh,
Benny, Neeti Mohan, Tanvi, Sayanora, Aslam, Dr.Narayan, Raihana AR,
Ishrath AR –musicians-all of them Super percussionist Sivamani to
Bass king Keith. The entire show was conducted by Mr.Srinivas Murthy
and to lead them all was none other than our humble, god fearing
magician musician-AR!!!

The show kickstarted with Jaage hain from Guru-Chitraji took one
corner and her sweet voice opened the concert, and as the
orchestration became grander the voice that I call Chocolate
Souffle voice, as quoted by the Hindu-Bangalore came in-Wearing a
black to the knee overcoat and continued Jaage hain.

The list of songs are as follows:

Jaage hain (Chitra, ARR)
Khalbali ( ARR)
ARR speaks
Kadhal Rojave (Hari/Chinmayee)
Barso Re (Neeti Mohan)
Paatshala (Blaaze/Naresh/Aslam)
Monroe (Benny/Ujjaynee)
Rubaroo (ARR/Naresh)
Dil se (ARR)
Jashne Bahara (Aslam)
Maduraikepogathadee (Benny/Chinmayee)
Azeem O shaan plus Rukkumani plus Veerapandi (Percussion and Chorus)
Intro to musicians, setup of unplugged
Tamizha Tamizha (Hariharan)
Hari speaks
Unplugged
Tu hi re (Hari)
Anjali Anjali (chitra)
Sahana (chinmayee/Aslam)

Vennilavae (Hari/chinmayee)
Maiyya Maiyya (Neeti/Aslam)
Kehna hi kya (Chitra/ARR)
Tere bina (ARR/Chinmayee)
The boss (blaze/aslam/naresh/Dr Narayan)
Vaaji Vaaji (Hari/chinmayee)
Athiradee (ARR/sayanora/Aslam/Naresh/Chorus)
Humma Humma (Blaaze/ARR/Naresh)
Maa tujhe salaam (ARR/All)

The following songs were a part of the schedule, but was kept from
performing for unknown reasons:

Ellampughazhum (ARR)
Saregame (Blaaze/Tanvi/Naresh/Sayanora)

Athiradee rocked as usual.Needless to say!! Rahman was super
energized for Khalbali.Dil se re was touching. Chinmayee surely won
hearts with her singing and I personally loved Vennilavae.
The highlight, as in the Delhi concert was again-The medley Marhabaa
plus rukkumani plus veerapandi kottayile. What a show!! This can only
be felt-no matter how much I can write here, those there would agree
with me on this. The energy of this performance-I'm amazed. This
time an ensemble of drums was lead by kids. Excited they were-and
honored-they shared the stage with ARR!
The unplugged was a rare one.Rahman took to his keyboard, initially
there was some technical snag-but was well covered by the
technicians and some timely smartness by Hariharan-who took to
interact with the crowd. He asked the crowd to sing along and gave
them a time to remember.
I got a hundred msg's asking me who sang Maiyya Maiyya. Neeti Mohan
from Delhi was the performer here-but not to forget the ease with
which Aslam Bhai plays the gujurati with his Walidaaa-brilliant.
Needless to say-Aslam Bhai is a hero-among his pals and fans.He sang
Jashne Baharaa.Beautiful, infact I'm in loss of descriptions. Really
well performed.
Tere Bina –a personal favorite. The song of the year.AR's voice just
reaches your heart and what better than to hear chinmayee play with
her voice too.
The boss was a crowd favorite.Blaaze stole the show there quite
easily.
Honestly, the crowd was a huge disappointment. Primarily because the
show was an invitation based

[arr] Mann Mohana Translation

I myself being a devotee of Lord Krishna find the song even more
special. I strongly believe that one who is immensely graced by God
can only compose such a song. God bless ARR and thanks to God that I
find my answers in his music.

Mann Mohana
[Mann Mohana means Lord Krishna. Literally Mann means heart and Mohan
means the person who fascinates.]
Kanhaa.Suno Na
Kanha...please listen [Kanha = Lord Krishna]
Tum bin paoon kaise chaiyn
How can I be in peace without you?
Tarsoo tumhiko din raiyn
I yearn for you the entire day and night

Chhod ke apne Kaashi-Mathura
Please leave your Kaashi and Mathura [Kaashi = Varanasi]
Aake baso more nain
And dwell in my eyes
Tum bin paoon kaise chaiyn
How can I be in peace without you?
Kanhaa..tarsoo tumhiko din raiyn
Kanhaa.. I yearn for you the entire day and night

Ik pal ujiaara aaye
One moment it's (life) is full of light
Ik pal andhyaara chhaye
The next very moment it's dark
Mann kyun na ghabraaye
Why shouldn't I be frightened?
Kaise na ghabraaye
Why shouldn't I be frightened?
Mann jo koi doraaha apni rahon mein paaye
If my heart is confused in front of a crossroad

`Brindaban ke Gokul ke basi' means a person who hails from Gokul
situated in Brindaban, which means Lord Krishna]
Radha Tumri daasi, darshan ko hai pyaasi
Radha is at your service, athirst for your glance
Shyam salone Nandlala Krishna Banwari

Life is like a river, meandering in waves
Is mein mann ki naiyaa doobe, kabhi tar jaaye
Here the boat like heart sometime sinks sometime emerges
Tum na khiwayiaan ho toh koi tat kaise paaye
If you are not there to help, then how can one find his shore?
[khiwayiaan = sailor]
Manjdhar dehlaaye
Wobbles in the mid-ocean
Toh tumri sharan aaye
Then comes to your submission
Haan tumri sharan aaye
Yes, comes to your submission

Main hoon tumhari
I'm all yours
Hain tumhara yeh mera jeevan
And my life is also yours
Tum ko hi dekhoon main
When I look at you
Dekhoon main koi darpan
It seems I see a mirror
Bansi ban jaoongi
I wish I could turn into a flute
In hoton ki ho jaaungi
And submit myself to these lips
In sapnon se jalthal
Fascinated by these dreams
Hai mera mann aangan

 Aesthetic Judgment (Taste)

I don't have to tell you that ARR's taste is of the highest
possible kind compared with composers of all time. I mean how many
composers the world-over has ever had the privilege of being compared
to the ideal of Mozart, let alone being called one? Not even the
kings of melody of the West – Richard Rogers (of The Sound of Music
(59) fame) Sir Francis Lai (Love Story (1970)), Maurice Jarr (Dr.
Zhivago (1965)), or even Ennio Morricone, who have written some of
the most soulful and moving music I have ever heard, have been told
they are like Mozart, at least not to my knowledge. Most music
lovers, and all great minds, Leo Tolstoy and Albert Einstein among
them, have acknowledged unanimously that Mozart's music is the most
perfect and the most universal imagined, no, let me use the word
conjured, by any human being; because imagination, to many, could
still mean there's some conscious involvement in that process of
creation; perhaps, it is still a conscious process, but it is a far
superior sense of consciousness that, by average human standards, it
cannot be called one. If anybody here has seen the Oscar-winning
movie Amadeus (84) by Milos Forman, you can see why it is so:
Mozart's music, to use a phrase Einstein once used, seems like have
simply been `plucked out of the universe'; the great scientist who
adored Mozart and used to play his Sonatas on his little violin when
he wanted a break from his scientific pursuits, says that compared to
Mozart, Beethoven's music feels `too personal, almost naked.'
Tolstoy, in his polemical book `What is Art?' destroys the kind of
conscious creativity that he believes Beethoven and the followers of
the Romantic movement that he charted, Richard Wagner, for example,
brought about to Europe, overthrowing the musical dominance of the
spontaneous and universal music of Mozart.

In essence, Mozart's music and its perfection are not a result of
conscious processing, they come from a superior sense of natural
harmony and an extremely rare capability of letting go of one's self
and connecting with the universal spirit and listening to it in all
its infinite beauty. There cannot be a more fitting description of
ARR's music and how he has conjured his magical output over the
years; and it is no accident that the West would offer up their ideal
for comparison with the best the East has offered to date. That sort
of taste, a sincere kinship with the natural harmony and beauty of
the universe, with God, if you will, years in an industry cannot fade
away or dilute, and, if anything, I can confidently say that ARR's
taste has, over the years, been refined like fine old wine, and I
have not witnessed an instance where his aesthetic judgment, given
the proper opportunities, has faltered beyond identification. In his
choice of movies, directors, and lyrics, there maybe exceptions, but
I will address these in a later category.

It is difficult to pin down one or two works from the 92-96 period
in which, like Rano said, beauty oozed out of every single phrase
that he weaved, but I will pick two of my favorite songs `Kannalane'
from Bombay (95) and `Uyirum Neeye' from Pavitra (94) in which I
think ARR achieves the highest form of perfection. Sometime back, I
analyzed the beauty of the song Uyirum Neeye from a conceptual
viewpoint, so if anybody is interested, let me know and I will send
it to you or post it on the forum. Kannalane (or Kehna Hai Kya), I
hear, has entered the music textbooks in certain parts of the world
(Canada, if I recall correctly)! Yes, these are songs of superior
beauty that they have that universal appeal that Tolstoy hailed as
the finest ingredient of the greatest of art.

What about now? What are the ARR compositions within the past 5
years which evoke the same feelings in me? Piya Ho from Water (2005)
and Do Kadam from Meenaxi (2004) for sure are my favorites from this
period with Tere Bina from Guru not too far off. When I refer to the
perfection of these songs, I mean that I don't feel that I need to
remove any part, any phrase, any instrument, sound or note,
everything is in the right place at the right time! If anybody felt
differently about these songs, I would be curious to know which parts
destroy the perfection of these songs. I can write an essay on the
song Do Kadam and will do soon so that I can back up my feelings just
like I did with Uyirum Neeye. Do Kadam is so personal for me that I
don't want to hold it up as universal! This song symbolizes what ARR
and I share in silence without speaking a single word with each-
other, but by connecting to the same universal spirit that we both
trust wholeheartedly and by whose mysterious ways we are awed day in
and day

Re: [arr] JA Pet Peeves (sort of)

2008-01-28 Thread durba bhattacharjee
Chord, I agree with you on most of the points. Actually I was wondeing that
something was definitely lacking with this album. All the songs are
tremendously beautiful in themselves, but they dont seem to complement each
other. A thread perhaps is missing and I just cannot figure out what's wrong!
But there's something wrong as I just cannot be satisfied with the album.

I wish there were one or two more songs or at least one song that would stand
apart as the identity of the album. Any movie soundrack usually have one or two
songs that actually pull the identity of an album. This is not always true but
in most of the cases the OST of a movie contains a song that promises to be a
'hit' song both among the classes and masses. It may or may not be a fast peppy
number. For example in Guru, Tere Bina is such a song that stands by its own. A
compelete song that is neither bounded by situation nor handicapped by the use
of instruments. I miss such a powerful song in JA.

All the songs in JA seem more situational than eternal. Azeem or Khwaja are
too type specific to be a stand alone songs. Mann Mohana is a bhajan, cant
serve the purpose. That leaves Jashn-e-Bahara and Inn Lamhon. I found Inn
Lamhon very mutch situational as it has actually four phases of composition.
That leaves Jashn e bahara, which is too mellow to be an out and out hit.

I can't forget how ARR has done wonders before with even more stringent
situations. For example his composition in Zubeidaa, Lagaan, Mangal pandey,
1947 Earth, Water, WOHE (I'm considering the period dramas only) etc are
classics. Then what is the problem with JA? For myself my answer is that
there's some difference of vision between the director and music director. I
know different people will have different opinions.

And I was also terribly mising sarangi, sitar and mohan veena. I wish there
was at least one instrumental composition in the album.

minutes under Lagaan's soundtrack length. But, there's this
nagging
feeling that some songs were cut or there's just not enough
material
  here.

  2) Why not a pure classical song? Classical music is heavy in this
soundtrack, but I would have loved something more traditional,
like a
Kathak dance thumri or something of the sort. Did anyone listen to
Chale O Saiyaan from Khoya Khoya Chaand? It's got complex tabla,
ghungru, pure classical melody. Perhaps the film's story didn't
allow for such a dance, but I sure wish it did..ala Devdas but
  better!

  3) I am missing a female solo love song. There is a male solo
romantic song and a female solo devotional, but I wish there was a
female solo song too. Just my wish. Again, the story probably
  didn't allow it.

  4) Man, as much as I love the instrumentals based on the main
songs,
I sure wish ARR had done a pure theme instrumental, ala 1947 Earth
  Theme. I really miss this!

  5) There is a distinct absence of Tanpura in this soundtrack.
Listen
to Naina Neer and Bangari Marori from Water or Ishwar Allah from
Earth..feel the magic of the divine Tanpura as the drone
backdrop. I wish at least one song had it. Also miss the Sarangi.
It fleetingly appeared for 2-3 seconds beautifully in the
beginning
of the In Lamho song, but never to be heard again! Also wished
more
Sitar was used other than the brief interlude in In Lamho.

Ok, I admit, I am basically wishing for my fantasy album! I'm not
really upset or bothered too much that these wishes didn't come to
pass. I am more than happy with what ARR delivered for us, and
like
I said in my review, JA went beyond my expectations!

One correction... this track is not exactly a Naat, it's a
Nasheed. Naat
is generally referred to any religious poems/shayari/verses.
Whether a Naat
contains music or not is completely up to the producer of Naat, it
doesn't

when they

Nasheeds. Therefore, this album has all Nasheeds.

Marhaba Mustafa is an awesome Nasheed, very simple yet spiritual.
The one

Re: [arr] Tamil cds/cassettes in Delhi?

2007-12-11 Thread durba bhattacharjee
Though I could never manage to find a tamil cd/cassette shop for myself, still
you may try in three places

  1. Connaught Place (one shopkeeper once said me that there was one such shop
but i could not find it out as i was getting late)

  2. Tamil Sangam Marg near RK Puram (there are a number of tamil shops there.
If not a cd shop, at least you can have some idea from other shops. As I used
to stay in Noida and Dilshad Garden, it was not possible for me to go there)

  3. Lajpat Rai market

I just came to know that ARR is supposed to sing in an upcoming album

Re: [arr] Delhi concert-In depth (detailed report!)

2007-11-21 Thread durba bhattacharjee
Thank Nazeef for your excellent write up.

naztitude [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Who says
that this world is out of sweet people?!

Somehow reach the backstage of an ARR concert and I'm more than sure
that the above question will be answered! The sweetest I've met are
a part of the ARR family. This

should be a good starter, bear with me for being detailed-it's on
the request of a few members.

 Friday, 16th November 2007-Rehearsal

Met the first sweet person of the trip in the airport-Varun Nair of
our group. Now that's what is called a coincidence, meeting a group
member for the first time, that too in an airport going for the same
concert in the same flight. After a series of lies and saving up
money-I finally reached Delhi. And the first thing we see when we
landed was this huge AR Rahman Live In Delhi hoarding!! It was
convincing that the event was going to be big!! Thanks Varun for the
wonderful hospitality, can't be greatful enough for your sweetness.

The afternoon I met the group co-ordinator of the group Pawan
(Pawancumarr). Needless to say another sweetheart-Thank you Pawan
for all that you did, on behalf of the group let me thank you for
receiving us well in Delhi and entertaining us ( Vijay, smile
please!!). Varun and Pawan, to the two of them this was the first
concert and the excitement was obvious, so was mine-but having
worked in the Bangalore concert-I knew that much more than the
actual concert the rehearsal day is more pleasant for the fans.

It seemed like we were entering some fantasy land then-or should I
say, It was a fantasy-to be walking and talking with the people who
together with ARR give us –what we get to hear and to be under this
 wonderful community.

Forgive me again for writing this on a very personal viewpoint, but
I hope you guys understand what it is to be with such people. The
first one in the list was Sayanora Philip.

Thankfully acquainted with her-the entry into the musical camp was
even easier. We spoke for almost an hour-snapped photos, one of the
best ever! For those who are not familiar with this name-Sayanora is
the voice behind Sivaji's Athiradee and a few other popular non ARR
numbers in both Malayalam and Tamil. We got introduced to Tanvi Shah-
the stunning voice that sang Fanaaa fron Yuva/Ayutha Ezhutu
complimentary to ARR's high pitched voice and numbers like Jillunu
oru Kadhal to name a few.

A few more clicks. A few more smiles and poses. Tons of
satisfaction. But most importantly, it's the feeling that Humbles
you down-that people who share the stage with ARR, are here with us
for an hour or more-talking about our group, Rahman, the malls and
the dust in Delhi!! I'm sure Varun and Pawan agree-it was almost
like we knew Tanvi and Sayanora for ages.

Artists entered one after another-Aslam, Hariharan, Blaaze, Murtaza
and Qadir, Neeti, Kailash Kher and the rest made entry one by one.
Most of them we were able to catch up with, talk to and take snaps
with-while the others were just too busy rehearsing.

Blaaze recognized me-all I had to say was Yahoo! And Bangalore and
almost like lightning he comes up with Aah Dude-Yo! I remember!
How can I forgot you guys!??

He spoke to for us a long time again-and more interesting trivia on
ARR-how he works and how he makes things work. He spoke about how he
unexpectedly made his debut with B to the A to the B….and no looking
back after that-rightfully as put by some newspaper BLAAZE-Blaazing
with Rahman!! Guys don't shoot me for this one-Blaaze showed us and
spoke to us about some upcoming surprises by ARR!! All I can say is
I can't wait! And as promised to Blaaze, we won't talk about it. And
let it all come as a surprise-worth the wait! By this time we were
all lost in a new world-dashing shoulders with singers and bumping
into media people who would just have one question Has ARR
 Arrived?

Almost half past seven-A Black 5 series BMW, sleek and long makes an
entry. And quietly putting his left foot down was the man whose
music features in TIME's all time top ten, whose music lists as
multiple entries in the oscar and the same man who brought us all
together- AR Rahman. The first thought was-I can die right now and
I'll have no regrets, the happiness you get when one sees this man
 is multi-himalayan in heights!

But No! Wait for the rehearsals. The stage was not completely ready-
the production team was working-hammers and tools. The musicians
were busy tuning their instruments and Mr. KJ Singh and H Sridhar
were busy checking for minute specifications, whilst ARR dressed in
a black Formal Blazer supervised the whole stage. It looked chaotic-
everyone one stage running about-the mics kept on and you can hear
commands in Hindi English and Tamil. There is a sudden silence and
there was a familiar sound-it sounded like JA-or was it

[arr] ARR INTERVIEW Tonight at 8:30 pm - Please Someone Record It!!!

2007-11-18 Thread durba bhattacharjee
There's an ARR interview in Times-Now at 8:30 pm tonight. Someone
Please record it. I saw it today when it was aired at 2:30 pm. The
interview is taken by Arnab, and the show name is Frankly Speaking
with Arnab.

Arnab set some nice questions. ARR talks about his feelings
particularly for the songs like Roja Janeman, Tu Hi Re, Tanha Tanha
and Fanaa.

He also talks about his accepting criteria of a Hollywood project.

Arnab seemed to be completely submissive (very much unlike him)in
intervening ARR. He admitted it more than once that he is a great fan
of ARR.

Someone please record it. It's worth watching a number of times.

2007-10-05 Thread durba bhattacharjee
Though late but still I would like to express my view on this topic.

I agree with all the movie names mentioned here. But there are some
other sound tracks also by ARR in Hindi, the movies of which never
even released! Like

Love Birds
Tu Hi Mera Dil (Duet)
Priyanka (Indira)(was showd in TV once though, but I missed it)
Chor Chor (Thiruda Thiruda)
Khel Khiladi Ka (Super Police)
Mr Romeo
Love You Hamesha

But according to me the biggest 'un-noticed' album ever made by ARR
is One Love. He made the project for a social cause but there was no
media coverage on that! Regarding the issue, I have read a minimum
of 500 articles in three different languages - English, Bengali and
Hindi and NOWHERE I found a single mention of ARR! All the Delhi FM
stations launched 'Vote Taj' campaign, but not for once One Love was
played. After Taj got the nomination, every odd and even
personalities (like Bipasha Basu, Shilpa Shetty) were associated but
not ARR! I really feel sad for that.

Oh.thanks for such a meningful post after a long time.

Dinesh Vaidya [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Saw this interview of Lata
Mangeshkar on SAHARA news where she was
interviewed in RKB show on the occasion of her birthday recently.
Pretty bad interview because of Mr RKB, but there was this gem in the
form of Rahman speaking about LATA didi. The brief gist is as below,

Rahman : My memories with Lata ji are different from others. They
are from my fathers side. My Father had a photo of Lata ji and every
morning he used to wake up and see that photo. He used to say that
the divine face of Lata ji gave him inspiration and calm feelings. I
remembered that always.

So when I met Lata ji, I did not remember her achievements, ( they
are there to speak for themselves). I remembered that my father held
her in highest esteem and through that I had a very spiritual
connection with Lata ji. Whennever I meet Lata ji, I remember my
father

Touching indeed... I know, Rahman still misses his father. But
then, I am also sure, his father must have been proud of such a
prodigial son of India...

Rahman. Rah-E-Mahaan !

Re: [arr] Re: ARR has sung 2 songs in Hindi SIVAJI

2007-09-09 Thread durba bhattacharjee
Yes...i just hope the Hindi Shivaji does well. But still I have a hunch that,
it's difficult to create the magic it did when released in Tamil. I think it
would be best if the Hindi version too released at the same timebecasue I
remember then I was in Delhi and all my friends, who all Non-Tamilians, were so
curious about the movie that they decided to see it even when it released
without subtitles! Thses kind of craze is rare to see and its difficult to
recreate also. I just hope the Hindi Shivaji does not get unnoticed like a lot
of masterpieces of ARR.

And you are right Avinash. I too wish Boys and Ah Aah were dubbed in Hindi.
For a long time ARR hasnt done any commercial movie with styles and all.

[arr] Shauk Hai Translation

2007-08-30 Thread durba bhattacharjee
As yesterday the entire day I kept listening to Shauk Hai like an
addicted and as I had ample amount of free time in hand, I though to
give its translation a try and here it is. as always, both +ve and -
ve feedbacks are welcome. In last couple of translation postings both
by me and other members, I've seen the group members not responding
much. Are members not interested in translation anymore? Anyway, as
far as my intentions are concerned, ARR is god for me and translation
is nothing but a worship and even if no one responds, I'll keep
sharing them. Here it is:

Raat ka shauk hai
I aspire of the night

Raat ki saundhi si khamoshi ka
That earthen silence of the night

Shauk hai
I aspire

Subha ki roshni
That light of the morning

Bezubaan subho ki aur gungunati
Humming toward the mum morning

Roshni ka Shauk hai, ho shauk hai
I aspire of light, oh…I aspire

San sani anwlon ka
Of those pungency of amlas (I aspire to taste)

Ke ishq ke banwlon ka
Of those crazyness of the lovers (I aspire to have)

San sani anwle
Those pungent amlas

Ke ishq ke banwle
Those crazy lovers

Barf se khelte badolon ka
Of those clouds playing with the ice

Shauk hai
I aspire (to touch)

Kaash ye zindagi Khel hi khel mein kho gayi hoti
I wish this life were a child's play

Raat ka shauk hai
I aspire of night

Neend ki goliyon ka
Of those sleeping peels (I aspire)

Khwab ke loriyon ka
Of those lullabies of dreams (I aspire to listen)

Neend ki goliyan
Those sleeping peels

Khwab ke loriyan
Those lullabies of dreams

Bezubaan aus ki boliyon ka
Of those (unsaid) words of mum dews (I aspire to listen)

Shauk hai
I aspire

Kaash ye zindagi binkahe binsune so gayi hoti
I wish this life had gone to sleep without saying or listening
anything

Subha ki roshni
That light of the morning

Bezubaan subho ki aur gungunati
Humming toward the mum morning

Roshni ka Shauk hai, ho shauk hai
I aspire of light, oh…I aspire

[arr] Re: ARR Interview in Surabhi - 1995

2007-06-29 Thread durba bhattacharjee

That's not mistake. Surabhi rd was perfect. As far as I know, just
before finalizing for Roja credits, ARR's mother wanted ARR to change
his name from Dilip to some Islamic name, which they all had embraced
quite some years back. Then ARR's spiritual guide (forgot his name)
suggested that it should be A.R.Rahman. The initials A and R were
first thought of Abdul Razzaq but not finalised. Later they all
decided on Allah Rakha. That's the reason till 1995, I also knew that
ARR's full name is Abdul Razzaq Rahman but later only came to know
about Allah Rakha Rahman.

I hope I'm not wrong. Somedays back I read an article also on this
very topic but cant remember where I read it.

As the year was ending to a close, we were all under pressure for
achieving maximum targets.

As i work for IT dept and that too search and seizure section(raid
section in normal lingo), u never know where to proceed next anytime
during the day.

because of year end, most of the staff was on holiday and i was
happy that 30th and 31st were gonna be holidays.

due to hectic schedule i was not able to buy cd of guru; which had
appeared in stores a fortnight ago. sensing that now it is just
gonna be me and rahman for two days; i somehow squeezed time to drop
into planet m and bought my copy.

as i was heading to office, i got a message in my office to report
immediately. I reported and came to know that i had to go to a raid(
i.e complete SATYANAASH of my vacation!!) We generally have no
option but to go.

it was a small drive from the office to premises, in zaveri
bazaar. cutting lanes, we reached into a very poorly lit building-
the target place was on 2nd floor, but to our surprise, our address
didn't specify which room on the third floor.

as we always have warrant authorised w.r.t place, we had to cover
the entire floor. the floor had two rooms, one locked and the other
with some petty jewelery designer having his factory cum outlet.

We occupied both the places and started searching for some Mr Shah
who was supposed to be there.

As i had to enquire his whereabouts, i went and inquired to other
neighbours of Mr shah. In the meantime, one of our team members came
running and told u s that somebody named tanvi shah has come
visiting in adjoining shop.

alarmed by the name, we immediately caller her in. we were
definitely curious.as the lady walked in- quite young, good looking
and wearing jeans and top- we started quizzing her and she was
totally flabbergasted.

we had to take her statement and the responsibility came to me.i
started my regular routine.

i asked her the address first.she gave me the one which was
located in Madras. i was surprised. i said what brings u here then-
she coolly replied i am a part of a.r.rahman's troop and we are
performing live a day after!!!

now it was my turn to faint. being a rahman bhakt; i was talking
to a lady who was sharing space with my GOD! i knew rahman was
performing(entire mumbai knew 'bout it!) and it was difficult to lie
on oath cause i had already explained her the consequences earlier.

i continued my quizzing bit w/o letting anybody what was going in
my heart. as i found a good chance, i gently said to her,' madam i
am also rahman's biggest fan, but surprisingly u have been at a
wrong place in a wrong time; so please cooperate and ill see to it
that u get released as fast as possible'.

she asked- ' what was the last album that u had heard of him'

i said - 'i buy ALL.infarct i have one right now- the latest one.

she asked me to open my bag and show me the cd. i was surprised
and thought is it her statement i am recording or vice versa.. but
still i opened up my bag and showed her the cd.

she proudly showed me her name featured in two tracks as
background vocalist. i was floored. i was actually talking to
somebody who had worked with god. i just kept my papers aside and
started quizzing her about Him.

it was very difficult to gather something from her- she was tense
(obviously), we could not talk much. but i gathered that

 1. he is gentleman to the core
 2. doesnt communicate too much- 'do yr own thing' seems to be
mantra.
 3. likes innovation- no ego hassles, absolute down to earth
 4. he is really init. totally immersed always.

i could hardly gather more, as i wanted to free her at the
earliest for her rehearsals

i took permissions from bosses(n'ways she was not even remotely
connected to the case) and allowed her to go, but i asked her if i
can mail her and ask few of her experiences with Him for our group,
which she happily agreed to.

i saw the live telecast of the show on tv and she was right there.
however sincerely i explained, nobody at my house believed that she
was our captive a day before.

a few days before i mailed her, and guess what - she has already
sung in Shivaji...

After the concert. We were about 20-30 guys waiting outside
the arena
with the hope that ARR would come out and meet us all. Initially
we were
more than 200. I wanted them all go home so that, I thought, ARR
would
consider meeting us. (if there's less no of ppl). It was getting
late. Last
BART train to our place was @ 12.00. We decided to forget about
the train
and wait for ARR. After an hour, the crowd size shrunk to 30.
[There were
two Americans in that. They saw 'Bombay Dreams' in London it

 I was little bit happy!

Finally, ARR came out but he did not get down from the car as he

A.R Rahman is riding a global wave of enthusiasm for India's films
and musicals, a genre he helped define

When most people think of Bollywood, they picture colourful movies
with energetic dancing and larger-than-life characters. But there
is
much more to Bollywood than that.

It's a cultural phenomenon that is sweeping the western world,
providing creative inspiration for everyone from fashion designers
to
home decorators and even the television producers of The Simpsons.

Bollywood enters the limelight in Vancouver on Sunday when
composer
A.R. Rahman, dubbed the Mozart of the Madras by Time magazine,
takes the stage at the Pacific Coliseum as part of his 3rd
Dimension
 North American Tour.

The show is expected to attract a big audience, says Rahman's
promoter, Raj Subramaniam, adding that his first concert tonight
in
San Francisco sold out days in advance.

He's a worldwide phenomenon, Subramaniam explains.

Not even the international cult fame of composer Ennio Morricone --

awarded an honorary Oscar this year for his 400-odd soundtracks --
can touch the popularity of Rahman, sometimes claimed to be the
best-
 selling composer in recorded history.

The BBC estimates Rahman has sold more than 100 million albums
worldwide. He has scored for over 80 films and six albums
comprising
 more than 600 songs.

Born in 1967 in Chennai, Tamil Nadu, Rahman is rooted in the
southern
tradition of Indian music. He is the son of composer R.K. Sekhar,
and
his biography reads like one of his movies. His career began as an
instrumentalist at age nine, following his father's untimely
death.
By age 17, he was creating jingles for TV commercials.

Rahman earned a scholarship to study classical music at Oxford
University in England, earning his first hit at age 25 with his
soundtrack for the film Roja in 1992.

He collaborated with Andrew Lloyd Webber for the stage musical
Bombay
Dreams in 2002, and also created the music for the stage version
of
The Lord of the Rings which premiered in Toronto in 2006.

Mainstream Western audiences have had limited exposure to Rahman's
film work (more than 100 titles and counting); the soundtracks to
Lagaan (2001) and Water (2005) are perhaps his best known.

Rahman is quite modest about his accomplishments, attributing all
his
successes to Allah. He recently told an ABC/Australia
reporter: When
I got my first break I thought, 'I want our music to go around the
world, being appreciated by all people around the globe.'

So that made me take efforts to do little changes, changing the
beats and getting harmonies and chord progressions and stuff like
that, with traditional Indian melodies. And I think something
magic
 happened.

He admits his perfectionism has given him a reputation for being
difficult; some of the playback singers featured on his
soundtracks
have called him a tyrant. Rahman shrugs off such criticism, seeing
himself as a composer for hire along with the rest of a film's
crew.

He wowed Los Angeles last season with a Hollywood Bowl spectacular
that combined song, dance, and projected movie clips. His
Vancouver
appearance promises more of the same, with a troupe of more than
100
 performers.

Bombay Dreams and Lord of the Rings are musicals not albums. What
about Set Me Free and Deen Isal Malai? They are not included? Taj
Anthem does not have any significance here. Total is not coming six

[arr] Re: Creating music a Challenge for me: Rahman

2007-05-27 Thread durba bhattacharjee

After reading the article 3-4 times I could sense some negativity. I
am not sure though but I feel there lies a subdued flow of mentality
to prove that ARR is more a technocrat than a composer. May be I am
wrong but it's been done by the Hindi film media for a long time
ever since he arrived.

Mixing soundtracks and getting audiences hooked on to a lyrical
melody -
that in some ways explains AR Rahman, a musical rage in the South
and now,
an all-time favourite of music-frenzy Indians spread all across
the globe.
As for the latest, the man with a musical mind a la Rahman is now
bringing
out a series of albums. This, of course, is in additon to the
anthem song
that he has sung and composed on saving Taj. The new range of work
includes
an album on Hindustani Classical music, ancient Tamil poems among
other such
unique experiments in the world of rhythm and sounds.

Even for the maestro, creating music is never the proverbial
icing on the
cake. He recently was at an event that was aimed at saving the The
Taj Mahal
in Agra, but took time out to reminisces about a musician's
constant
struggle and passion to churn out chartbusting numbers. To put
together some
notes for the Taj Mahal project, for instance, all he had was a
piano by
the side and used the instrument to its fullest despite the
constraints of
 the musical prop.

So what does he think about musical technology? He considers
technology to
be the greatest gift to every musician. You can listen to all your
favourite numbers and feel inspired on the array of portable music
devices
available today, he says. Rahman has definitely used high-
technology to get
grooving on some musical favourites that include some western
numbers and
several other compositions from the genre of classical music.

But there is more to Rahman than just music. One of them being his
closeness to Illayaraja, another timeless musical icon from beyond
the
Vindhyas, who, in some ways was instrumental in Rahman's success
as a
musician in the filmdom - be it Tollywood or across.

My connect with Illayaraja dates back to my father's time. I
used to
listen to him when my father was working with him. Today
Illayaraja's kids
listen to my piano, he adds. Apart from spinning such all-time
musical
charm, Rahman is also betting big on a new entrepreneurial venture
that he
has floated in the world of music. From designing music to
deciphering
concepts, a huge leap may we say?

[arr] An old Hindu Interview

2007-05-18 Thread durba bhattacharjee
Just accidentally I came across this old interview of ARR, which was
published in the Hindu sometime after Roja. As I read it for the
first time, just though of sharing it with every one here.

Question: How did you come into films?

A.R.Rahman: My father, R.K.Shekar, was a music director in Malayalam
films. He assisted Salil Chowdhary, Devrajan and others. He
died when I was nine. At 11, I came to the field, playing
on the keyboards and later as an accompanyist. I worked under
under various music directors in Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam -
Ramesh Naidu, M.S.Vishwanathan and Illayaraja. It started becoming a
bit monotonous. I thought advertising would be a good alternative.
This went on for three years. I built my studio and took to
different forms of music - pop, rock and so on. It was then that I
met producer Tirlok Sharadha, cousin of ManiRathnam at a party.
He (Mani) came to my studio and heard some of my tunes. We agreed
to work together though we did not then decide on which movie.Only
later he told me it was to be Roja which he was directing for
K.Balachander.

Q: Despite your success, you do not seem to be working in a lot
of films.

ARR: Rather than making money, I believe in making people  happy;
all other things are secondary. That is why I am not interested
in a lot of movies but only in one at a time. I like directors
whom I can vibe with. Ten years of experience in this field has
made me quite frustrated. I have evolved a technique which re-
quires a lot of time. Other music directors record a song in
seven or eight hours. But I am different. we do a basic sitting
and we record it. we record the voice and I add instrument by in-
strument to improve the quality.

Q: Will not the producers say that you are delaying their
projects?

ARR: My process involves a lot of time. The delay is not inten-
tional. That is how I get my results. When people say that
in Gentleman and Thiruda Thiruda the music is good and not like
the usual beats, I feel happy. Abroad, in some places, they take
three months to make an album.

Do you use computer in your films?

ARR: No. Not computers. The technique involved is different. In
fact, they say the music in Roja was computerised. As I said
earlier the recording takes time. You can hear the same flute
here in a different way. It is not computerised music. Nearly 40
persons sang `Veerapandi Kottayile' (a song from Thiruda Thiru-
da) that does not sound like computer music. `Vellai Mazhai'
from Roja) is sync oriented. I do not restrict the musicians,
but ask them to play whatever they feel. Then I record what I
want. I spend a lot of time on lyrics too. It takes around four
days. We write something in the first instance and then improve.
So it takes about a week to complete a song.

Q: Then you will be working only in perhaps half a dozen films a
year?

ARR: What will I do if I work for more films and only a few
click? I do not want my energy to be wasted. I want every film to
be a musical hit. In fact, Thiruda Thiruda songs have created a
record for any Tamil film - 25,000 discs were sold in Malaysia.
They are going to give us platinum discs.

You say you are choosy, but you also go in for popular songs.
Why is it so?

ARR: Different people need different songs. I want to go down to
the people at various levels. When I toured Tamil Nadu, I found
that people wanted songs that would make them happy. Also noth-
ing vulgar. There is nothing vulgar in Sikku bukku Sikku bukku
raile (a song from Gentleman).

Q: So you want to be with the masses?

ARR: No, rather I want my music to reach everywhere. If I play
rock, only youngsters will understand, while older people will
say Why is he shouting like this?. Each category of music
reaches only one circle: for the class audience Thiruda Thiruda
and for the masses Gentleman.

Q: Does basic knowledge of Carnatic music help?

ARR: Sure. I am learning Carnatic classical music from
Dakshinamurthy and Hindustani from Krishnan Nair. I like tradi-
tional music much.

Q: Why is it that the songs these days go out of people's mind
soon unlike the old numbers?

ARR: In those days, the lyrical value was greater in songs.

Q: You want to be called number 1 in the industry?

ARR: No. Numbers are not decided by me, but by the grace of God
and by the people. I want my job to be interesting and fun. I
just do not want to get stuck again in monotony.

2007-05-03 Thread durba bhattacharjee
When I gave RDB the first and complete hear, Khoon Chala and Ru Ba Ru
were the two songs that took my maximum attention.

Khoon Chala is more lyrical than musical and I loved every bit of its
poetry. I loved the way Mohit Chauhan sang it and kept on listening to
it repeatedly though mainly for its lyrics. But the thing that
surprized me the most was the way he controlled his breathe. It was
amazing. The song was very quiet and still there is no sound of his
breathing unlike many other star singers. It's been almost 2 years RDB
released but I never heard anyone say anything about Mohit Chauhan,
neither in this group nor outside. I just hope he doesnt get vanishes
in the crowd.

Re: [arr] Swades' Lyrics in English - Here it is

2007-05-03 Thread durba bhattacharjee
Diyan

I tried to translate the lyrics of Yeh Jo Des. See, if it helps you.
But couldnt translate the mood though. I will be really glad if
someone comes forward with a better translation.

Ye jo des hai tera, swades hai tera, tujhe hai pukaara…
That country of yours, that's your own land, is calling you

Ye woh bandhan hai jo kabhi toot nahin sakta) –2
This is the bond, which can never be tore off

Mitti ki hai jo khushboo, tu kaise bhoolaayega
That fragrance of earth, how can you forget that?

Tu chaahe kahin jaaye, tu laut ke aayega
You may go anywhere; you are bound to come back

Nayi nayi raahon mein, dabi dabi aahon mein
Traveling new roads, in subdued steps

Khoye khoye dilse tere, koyi ye kahega
To your lost mind, someone may say (or ask)

Ye jo des hai tera, swades hai tera, tujhe hai pukaara
That country of yours, that's your own land, is calling you

Ye woh bandhan hai jo kabhi toot nahin sakta
This is the bond, which can never be tore off

(Hmm…hmm…hmm…hmm…hmm…)
Tujhse zindagi, hai ye keh rahi
Life is telling you (or asking)

Sab toh paa liya, ab hai kya kami
You have achieved everything, is anything left?

Yun toh saare sukh hai barse
Though you have attained all worldly pleasures

Par door tu hai apne gharse
But you are away from your home

Aa laut chal tu ab diwaane
Let's go back now

Jahaan koyi toh tujhe apna mane
Where somebody finds you akin

Awaaz de tujhe bulaane, wahi des
Calling you to come back, that country of yours

Ye jo des hai tera, swades hai tera, tujhe hai pukaara
Ye woh bandhan hai jo kabhi toot nahin sakta
(Hmm…hmm…hmm…hmm…hmm…)

Ye pal hai wahi, jis mein hai chhupi
puri ek sadi, saari zindagi
This is the moment, where
a decade, even entire life is hidden

Tu na poochh raaste mein kaahe
Aaye hain is tarha do raahein

Don't ask why there is crossroad (or dilemma) in your way

Tu hi toh hai raah jo sujhaaye
You are the one to suggest the right way

Tu hi toh hai ab jo ye bataaye
You are the one who will say now

Chaahe toh kis disha mein jaaye wahi des
In which way that very country should go

Ye jo des hai tera, swades hai tera, tujhe hai pukaara
Ye woh bandhan hai jo kabhi toot nahin sakta
Hmm…hmm…hmm…

[arr] Re: Kadalikkum of Kadalan.. Crispiest?

2007-05-02 Thread durba bhattacharjee
Raghu, that's a very nice thread you started. I took some time,
listened to it again and now I'm replying. No wonder, it's an
amazing song and surprisingly I like to listen to its Tamil version
(which I don't understand) more than its Hindi version. The lyrics
seem to be very apt for the rhythm and beat of the song. I could
figure a lot of `kadhal' in the song, which I think means `love'.

Stretching the thread further, I also love `muqabla' immensely. I
think this is a landmark song in India and is one of the best ever
made in India. So many people had stolen its music, rhythm and
beats. I remember, then I was in school and I used to boast a lot
that I have the `original Tamil version of Muqabla' and people used
to borrow it from me. It's such a nice feeling when everybody around
you is praising ARR!

Thanks Thulasi for posting the article. Even I was about to post
asking for who this 'Sayanora' is. I liked her Tamil version
immensely for her excellent stylish pronounciation. I just loved the
way she sings 'Eddie Murphy pol naughty'. She complements perfectly
with ARR's style...but I didnt like her Telugu version much.

Sayanora gathers applause IndiaGlitz [Saturday, April 28, 2007]

As the audio of Sivaji has become a rage in Tamil Nadu and Kerala,
one of
the singers is jumping with Joy in her home town in Kerala.

The one family in Kerala that has personal reasons to celebrate
this
success- is Sayonara's. The Singer from Kerala had sung a song in
the album
that too the opening numbers with A R Rahman.

For this song, starting Adiradi Kaadhal Machcham..., Sayonara had
modulated
 her voice more like Shakira.

After recording the Tamil version, the music director tried to
bring
someone else to sing the song in it Telugu version, but very soon
he
realized that the voice wasn't as good as Sayonara's.

Eventually, she sang the song in Telugu too. Now both the songs
are reigning
 the charts.

Sayanora has earlier worked with A R Rahman in many projects. She
was in the
lead of Rahman's Bosnian album, and also worked as a chorus singer
in
Manirathnam's Guru. Then she sung songs for Sillunu Oru Kadhal,
its Telugu
version, and a yet-to-be released Hindi film 'Jane Kyon'.

As she has become a regular with Rahman, She will join him, when
he tours
the US and Canada this summer for music shows.

Sayanora debuted into filmdom with the song that she has sung for
Malayalam
movie Manjupoloru Penkutty in the music of Alphonse.

Recently she had sung two songs for the Malluwood Vishu hits
Chotta Mumbai
 and Big B.

Is there anyone in the group who hails from Bangladesh? As far as I

[arr] Shivaji wave – My experience

2007-04-10 Thread durba bhattacharjee
Yesterday my brother came home and asked me `Have you heard of
Shivaji, the new Rajnikant movie?' I said `Yes, waiting for the
cassette to come' (my friend is about to courier it to me shortly).
Then he said `Oh, you have not heard it yet, but it's available in
Musicindiaonline' and went straight to his room and actually started
to play the music. I was dumbstruck. It was the first time in last 13
years (except those days of my and ARR's B'days) I have seen him to
play Tamil song and listen to it.

Just imagine the hype Shivaji created that made my 100% Bengali
brother a Tamil listener!!! No wonder it's the name of ARR that made
all national channels to turn their head and see what's happening down
south. The power of ARR is proved again.

[arr] Lajjo Shelved??

2007-04-05 Thread durba bhattacharjee
According to a report published on Metro Now (Delhi Edition) today on
Kareena Kapoor's future projects, it's mentioned that Lajjo is shelved
over a tiff on Amir Khan and Mani Rathnam. For the time being I dont
want to believe the report because that would mean that only Jodha
Akbar will be a big budget project in 2007. Can people near ARR
confirm it?

in there movies, especially in big budget movies.
Ofcourse, the music he gives is priceless, but also the coverage
the

The way sivaji music has been shown in media, some in national
news
channels like CNN - IBN,Star ,and ofcourse countless websites.

Well,When chandramukhi released there was not such coverage,Even
when
anniyan released there were news in websites how the audio has
received
lukewarm response and all those kind of stuffs.

Yes i do agree that Its a dream team of Shankar - Rahman -
Rajini ,
but i doubt if this movie's music wud have got the converage if
there
was any other person as music director.

Also note that Rajini may be well known place among tamils and
most of
the indians.Shankar is still to make himself popular beyond the
South
India. But if you need your music to be heard not only by
tamils,but also
by the indians all over the world, then it shud have rahman..Even
those
who dont understand hindi will buy the Cassets CD's -- Reason -
For
Rahman - 80% and rest for hype it has created.

Thats why i feel Anyone else than Rahman is a Comprimise.

And also, wat rahman creates is a universal music, irrespective of
the
language.Even if the sivaji songs are gonna be dubbed in hindi, its
gonna
be rage everywhere. And who knows some may even be used by Rahman
in his
 hollywood works,just like Shakalaka Baby.

  Thats the Power of Rahman.

As fans of such a powefull man,wat one important lesson we can
learn
from him in our life is Whatever success you get, never let it get
into

Re: [arr] Which was the last ARR album that you listened non stop ?

2007-03-30 Thread durba bhattacharjee

I remember getting 'Kaadhalan'from a shop in my home town, which was
the first Tamil cassette i bought. I was in school then and I bought
it while returning home. I remember I had taken bath and had my
tiffin probably in 10 minutes and started listening to it. I dont
remember for how long I heard it continuously but after 1 week I
noticed I had memorized all the songs even including 'pettai rap'.
I learnt them so hard that after 10 years, I still can sing the
songs without understanding a single word :)

The same history repeated with Thiruda Thiruda which I got after 2
years after much trouble.

Latest was Guru which I listened continuously for probably 20 days.

When it comes to ARR music we always keep listening to it non

those days when kadhal virus got released, and I got the new
casette from the shop got into the train for 5 day tour arranged
from my school. From the time i put that cassete first into the
walkman it didnt stop for a single minute.. continous... non stop...
i didnt give that to any one.. it would be away from me only when i
go to bath and when i am sleeping.. mind blowing numbers...On the
fifth day when i returned back i couldnt hear those songs because
the film in the casette torn off :-( that shows how much time u was
listening.

[arr] Re: Gift Suggestion

Try to get an ARR T-shirt. If not getting it, then go to any Kodak
Express near your house with an ARR image saved in a cd, get it
printed on a coffee mug...it will take 2 weeks and will cost around
150/- to 200/-...and gift it to your friend. As a Rahman fan, it
would be the greatest gift for me :)

[arr] Re:CNN VOTE - ARR is far ahead with 60.53%

2007-03-26 Thread durba bhattacharjee
ARR is far ahead with 60.53%

But, is the voting counted perfectly? Since morning I have seen ARR's
percentage to rise from 52% to 60% but Ekta Kapoor's percentage didnt
fall from 11%. Sine the result is in percentage, it is obvious that
with every vote casted for ARR, there wiil be some decline in other's
percentage. Or otherwise, somebody else is dedicatedly voting Ekta too
at the same rate as we are doing for ARR, which seems to be quite
unlikely to happen.

an important fact i have noted: those who replied against 40 secs

there is a guy who replied that PFMB is a normal work by ARR

Out of 11,000+ members in our group there are at least 25% who are
