Need Help With ARS Web Service From iConclude (NMP) to Remedy

2007-01-31 Thread Candace DeCou

OK guys - I'm lost. We have the web service built - we can create a
ticket, but we are having trouble getting the modify function working.
I am totally unfamiliar with iConclude and the tech working with
iConclude is also unfamiliar with iConclude and with Remedy. And, I
admit, I'm not very savvy with web services - but learning fast.

We are on 6.3 Patch 16 - MS SQL - Mid-Tier 6.3 Patch 16 - Windows

Is there anyone out there that would be willing to help me - maybe
directly offline since I don't know of anyone else trying to set up this
type of service?

Thanks in advance for any help.

I may be a bit confused here ... Since you have a filter to do your work
you can have it fire on any modify or submit. If you only want it to
fire for a specific process then you can create a Display Only field
that the perl program puts a special value in when modifying the record
and have the filter use that in the Run-If.

Does anyone know how to fire an AR filter using arsperl? I have a
webform that is submitting data. I created a filter to encrypt the data
from one field and I need to fire the filter from arsperl. Any comments
would be appreciated. We're running ARS 6.3 and Iarsperl 1.83.

It will stop when the qualification is no longer met. ($FIELDLABEL$ =

There is no need for an Active Link guide. I tested it without one. It
starts and stops as desired.

Is it that much of a performance hit if the SET fields is done on the

I mean, there should be no DB request for this action and anything
that would process a count would use some CPU time. Correct?

Darshana, Rick, Dan & Saravanan,
The enhancement request for the full client and the Midtier would be
great but there is an alternative with AL workflow and the interval.
Granted it has a minimum of 3 seconds but you could fire a set fields
on interval that counts the length of the current field and subtracts
it from the known max length of the field.
Now there is the issue of trying to activate/deactivate the interval
so it only runs when needed. Maybe inside an AL Guide?

Re: SSO Problem: AREA being called more than once

2007-01-31 Thread Ben Chernys
First, I would code the AREA plug-in to handle all calls properly. You do
not need to authenticate on the subsequent calls unless a timeout is
reached. You will need to provide address info and an OK return code.

Then, yes, 16 seems like it should work though the comments are confusing.
Perhaps 7 is more correct.

Note that you will have to restart the plug-in server to reload this value.

Try it and see

Hello Ben,
I looked at the Configuration Guide's list of the parameters related to area
and notification and this is what i found:

Option:
External-Authentication-Return-Data-Capabilities

Description:
A bit mask that allows you to specify the return data capabilities for the
current AREA plugin. This setting does not control the AREA plugin, it
merely desecribes the behavior of the plugin, allowing for server
optimization. Acceptable values are as follows:
- Bit 1 (Value = 1) - no email address will be provided
- Bit 2 (Value = 2) - no notify mechanism will be provided
- Bit 3 (Value = 4) - no group identifiers will be provided
- Bit 4 (Value = 8) - no license information will be provided.
- Bit 5 (Value = 16) - no notification user validation should occur.
The default is 0, meaning the server wil attempt to retrieve this
information from AREA. A value of 7 will allow the server to potentially
reduce the number of AREA related calls during notification processing.
A value of 16 will allow the server to avoid using AREA for notification
user validation and information retrieval. Use this setting for sites using
a form of AREA that applies user names as email addresses and where there is
no benefit to accessing an authentication database.

So if I put the External-Authentication-Return-Data-Capabilities in the
ar.cfg and set it to 16, will ARS stop calling AREA twice?

Hi List,
Has anyone ever had any problems with their AREA being called more than
once? In the password field, a one-time-use token is being passed in. AREA
then calls SSO with that token, then SSO verifies the validity of the token.
However since the AREA code is being called more than once, the same token
that was being validated the first time it went through, is being validated

The AREA code we are using now is exactly the same as our old AREA code in

If you'd submit data with ARSPerl this is being treated as any other method
of data entry. That is, the filter will fire depending on the Run If
qualification and the Submit / Modify / Merge checkboxes.

Mid-Tier error (ARERR 9351)

2007-01-31 Thread Foy, Nathan
Anyone have any suggestions on how we can fix this error ARERR 9351 on
the mid-tier?

Users are getting this error when attempting to open/view an existing
request from the Requester or Support Consoles. They select a request
from the table and hit or click on View button to open request.
An error pops up stating "Unable to setup data connection which is
preventing the application from working correctly. (ARERR 9351)". When
you click on Ok, the error box disappears and the screen remains blank
until you hit the Back arrow.

The same user can successfully open the request from the client
Requester tool. This is only happening on the mid-tier client.

If you give the user Administrator permissions, the request(s) open from
the mid-tier just finewithout the error. Remove Administrator
permissions and the error returns.

I ran the logs and found the log stopped at the belowwhen it
popped the error. Successfully opening a request continues past the
break below and opens the request.

Re: User permissions

2007-01-31 Thread Colin Love
Thanks to Ben & Carey for their help - works a treat .

Got slightly muddled up with public permissions to the request-id -
removed that and it works exactly how
I want it to (and will use a hidden field for the request-id if I need
it).

Thanks,

Colin

**
I can think of two ways to do this.
- One, you make the field public and enforce permissions through
workflow.
- Two, you keep the current permissions on the field you have
and create another hidden field with public permissions where you mirror
the value of the original field. Modify your notification to use the
duplicate field.

User permissions

Hello,
We have recently upgraded to v7 of ARS (from v4.0!!) which was
done
via a new install. Obviously lots of things have changed
between the
two versions, but there is one thing I dont seem to be able to
nail.

We are intending to use mid-tier to allow users to submit and
review
their
own tickets, and have set up some LDAP authentication against AD
for
this
and it works well utlising the submitter field. We can further
use
field permissions to restrict access so the user can only see
their
entries and nobody elses. This is what we want.

However, we also have notifications going out from the form in
question
that go to what would be deemed public email addresses (ie dont
appear
in ARS) and for the field values to work we need to open up
permissions
for Public on the fields, which then breaks the user access as
they can
then see all of the calls.

Is there a way of locking down permissions to allow both
functions to
happen correctly, or perhaps a way for the notification to be
run as
a defined user that we can assign a group permission for
(instead of
Public) ?

Thanks in advance.

  Colin

Re: ARLogAnalyzer output

2007-01-31 Thread Rem Valenzuela
I've spent countless hours reading and analyzing files like this and
troubleshooting performance problems for the last couple years with more than
70% increase in performance. In my case the AVG Idle time was less than a
second and in some cases very close to zero. We ended up doubling the number
of threads, twice and saw a dramatic improvement. While this may be
subjective, I would increase your threads, but without knowing how many you
already have It's hard to say by how much. Though I'll stick my neck out and
say, increase by about a third and evaluate your hardware performance during
system load to determine whether it will remain that much, AND look at new logs
again, then adjust from there. By looking at your numbers too, I might
suggest increasing Fast threads more than List.

This is however a subjective and difficult to say how much better your system
will be without just doing it and by trial and error. If you would like more
info, or if I can further answer questions, contact me.

Thanks,
Rem

Re: ARLogAnalyzer output

2007-01-31 Thread Rem Valenzuela
BTW, to answer your question, AVG Idle time is more important because it gives
you a reference over time about how busy the thread was. The MIN Idle time
only gives you a point in time reference... meaning, it tells you ONLY how long
the shortest period was before the thread recieved another request.
I probably shoulda only answered your question instead of the book in the early
message. HAHA, oh well, hope some of this helps.

Maybe OT: RPC Service Going Up/Down

2007-01-31 Thread Heider, Stephen
Windows Server 2003, SQL Server 2000, ARS 6.3 p17

The outside connection to our production Remedy server keeps going up
and down. The Remedy system appears to be running fine. I have been
receiving the morning email notifications fine (which are produced by
system processes running according to a schedule).

There are no errors logged at all in Remedy or SQL Server. The Event
Log on the server does not show any errors that would contribute to this
issue. There are 3 errors that occur every time someone logs into the
server via RDP:

Error 1: Userenv #1053 - "Windows cannot determine the user or computer
name. (The specified domain either does not exist or could not be
contacted. ). Group Policy processing aborted."

Error 2: MsGina #1010 - "Failed to set the user's home directory
(Drive U: connected to Share \\TPAFS04\HOME)."

Error 3: Userenv #1053 - "Windows cannot determine the user or computer
name. (The specified domain either does not exist or could not be
contacted. ). Group Policy processing aborted."

Our remote system monitoring server is reporting that the RPC Server is
going up and down. It could be that or instead it could be the
monitoring server is losing connection with the Remedy server and is
interpreting the event as the RPC Server going up and down.

Logging into the Remedy server via RDP is taking about 20 minutes. It
does not get stuck in any one part of the login, but all parts are slow.
For example, connecting to the server takes about 5 minutes, loading
computer profiles takes about 5 minutes, loading personal profile takes
about 5 minutes, the login script takes about 5 minutes, etc.

Connecting to the SQL database with SQL Enterprise Manager (from another
computer) sometimes takes several minutes, and then sometimes
instantaneously.

It is shaping up to be an interesting morning. Good thing I have a pot
of Starbucks Espresso nearby.

On the surface it appears to be a server or network issue instead of a
Remedy issue. No changes were made to the Remedy server yesterday or
today. No patches have been installed in several months.

Any ideas?

Stephen

Re: Netcool 7.1 + ARS 7.0.1 ?

2007-01-31 Thread Tony Worthington
Yes... both. There is a conf file setting for the adapter which is
AR_TCP_PORT, as well as the ARS environment variable of ARTCPPORT. :=)

I hear that the config file one is somewhat broken, so we're going to try
with env vars.

We have portmapper, and fixed TCP. Netcool is using the AR_TCP_PORT

Netcool logs show sucessful connection, but it shows the same message when
we put in a bogus server name.

We've opened a netcool ticket...

The ticket is still in "New" status (having been submitted 01/18/07) and

there are no updates (other than my original submission) except the

Re: Need Help With ARS Web Service From iConclude (NMP) to Remedy

2007-01-31 Thread Joe DeSouza
**

Is there any specific error or any condition that you are facing that is preventing you from creating this web service?

One of the possible problem since you say you are creating the service afresh is the cache. A must do when you create a new web service is to refresh the Mid-Tier cache just in case that hasn't been done as yet... Newly created web services appear not to work with the applications page not found error until the cache is refreshed..

Also check how you want to run the web service - whether you want it to run with a specific permission group or if its a public service.. accordingly make those changes on the URL...

OK guys – I’m lost.  We have the web service built – we can create a ticket, but we are having trouble getting the modify function working.  I am totally unfamiliar with iConclude and the tech working with iConclude is also unfamiliar with iConclude and with Remedy.  And, I admit, I’m not very savvy with web services – but learning fast.
We are on 6.3 Patch 16 – MS SQL – Mid-Tier 6.3 Patch 16 – Windows
Is there anyone out there that would be willing to help me – maybe directly offline since I don’t know of anyone else trying to set up this type of service?
Thanks in advance for any help.

Thank Michelle.

Rick, AFAIK the manual says all interval Active Links fire at the same
time for the same interval so it looks like three (3) Active Links set
for three (3) seconds each would all try to fire at the same time
anyway.
RFE Time?

That's a great solution Michelle. Now all that's needed for real time is
an interval of 1...or create 3 active links that are set to interval

2007-01-31 Thread Carey Matthew Black

Mario,

Yes they should. However please use the Severity values correctly:

Ref:
http://www.bmc.com/info_center_support/overview/0,,19097_4736154_39703040,00.html

"
Severity Level 1 = Critical Service Impact

Issue critically affects the primary business service, major
application, or mission critical system. Customer resources should be
available and willing to work on a 24x7 basis with BMC to resolve the
issue. Characteristics of a Severity 1 issue include:

 Business service is not operational
 Production system crashes
 Data integrity at risk
Production backup and recovery operations fail.
"

Also please note that your BMC support contracts only really buy you
defined "Initial Response Goals" based on . ( Which simply is not
"resolution time".) Yes they do all they can to get you to resolution,
but... there are limits to the amount of effort they will devote to
your issue if you are not paying for the highest levels of support.
(And the sky is almost the limit to the "highest levels of support".
They do, last time I really looked, offer "custom support options" for
those companies who really want to spend +22% support bills per year
too. Options like... they will keep physical hardware with your custom
application on it, and actually support it. :) )

Actually I've gotten good responses for Medium. We had some confusion over a

entered a medium Midtier question yesterday that had quickest response time of

Re: Maybe OT: RPC Service Going Up/Down - RESOLVED

2007-01-31 Thread Heider, Stephen
It was not an issue with Remedy. It was DNS and WINS. Here is what
happened in case someone else experiences the same symptoms.

The DNS and WINS settings on the Remedy server were old. All of the
other servers were updated but this server was overlooked. The DNS and
WINS settings were finally purged from the network and instantly made
the Remedy server's settings invalid.

Subject: Maybe OT: RPC Service Going Up/Down

Any ideas?

Stephen

2007-01-31 Thread Grooms, Frederick W
We recently upgraded our Oracle from 9i to 10g (10.2.0.2 + DST patches)
and the DBA would like to know about changing the optimizer setting. On
9i it was set to RULE and 10g does not officially support RULE anymore
so he would like to change it to COST based. All indexes are analyzed
every night.

I know that this has probably been discussed on here before, but which
would be better for running ARS on?

Re: Workflow

2007-01-31 Thread Rick Cook
Thanks, John. The manual's answer, if correct, would also point to the fact
that due to the syncronization of the interval Als, there would have to be
some client/server traffic for the server to accomplish that. Would be nice
to run some logs and see how much.

Thank Michelle.

Rick, AFAIK the manual says all interval Active Links fire at the same time
for the same interval so it looks like three (3) Active Links set for three
(3) seconds each would all try to fire at the same time anyway.
RFE Time?

That's a great solution Michelle. Now all that's needed for real time is an
interval of 1...or create 3 active links that are set to interval 3...or
something like that

Re: Mid-Tier error (ARERR 9351)

2007-01-31 Thread Lucero, Michelle - IST contractor
Hi, Nathan:

I see that your patch level for ARS 6.3 is 17. What patch level is your
Mid-Tier 6.3?

We use to see this error on older patch versions of Mid-Tier 6.3. I
distinctly remember receiving this in random places on Mid-Tier 6.3
Patch 5 and 13, even with an Administrator log on.

I have to admit that we haven't seen it since moving to Mid-Tier 7.0.0
Patch 1 (prod), nor Mid-Tier 7.0.01 Patch 1 in dev. I also don't
remember seeing it on Mid-Tier 6.3 P17.

Hope that helps,

Re: ARLogAnalyzer output

2007-01-31 Thread Misi Mladoniczky
Hi,

I usually focus on the number of calls with "no gap", compared to the
total number of calls.

To this end our rrrLog-tool presents a percentage for a gap less than 1,
0.1, 0.01, 0.001 and 0.0001 seconds.

http://www.rrr.se/tmp/rrrLogThread.html

You have to decide what "no gap" means. My experience tell me to look at
the "less than 0.01 seconds" column.

To get the exact number of times the server has queued calls, Server
Statistics would be the way to go.

Re: OT: Creating a view from 2 tables using SQL...

2007-01-31 Thread Jim Ashton
Hi, Joe.

If I understand your problem correctly, I think you may need a UNION query.

Something similar to that below:

SELECT Col1, Col2
FROM Table1
UNION
SELECT Col1, Col2
FROM Table2

This assumes Col1 is a compatible data type in both Table1 and Table2, as
is Col2. This will give you the entire set of data from both tables in one
view; that is if each table contains 10 records, the view will consist of
20 records.

Cheers,
Jim.

System Requirements (W2k3 ram?) / performance

2007-01-31 Thread Nick Hromyak
I have been told our Remedy server should have 1GIG of ram per processor.
Is this a “basic” standard?

Our web performance seems hesitant. After logging on, it take 3 – 5
seconds for the home page to come up. Then another 1 – 2 seconds for
Support Console to come up. Other pages seems fine.

The Mid-Tier does not show performance problems, although I am not sure
what more to turn on for logging. I currently have Warnings (usually set
to Severe) with Cache, Performance, Servlet, Web Services being logged.

80 concurrent users during the day - all are using the Mid-Tier interface.

Remedy Apps = ARS 6.3, HD 6.0, CHG 6.0, AM 6.0 (AM is not in use yet).

We have (3) three separate servers for our Remedy environment
All are Windows 2003
(1)Remedy, (1)MS SQL 2003, and (1) Mid-Tier with IIS 6.0 (Asapi).
Each server has two (2) dual-core 2.8Ghz or better processors, and 1GB NICs.

Our Remedy server only has 1GB of ram.
SQL server has 4GB of ram.
IIS has 2GB of ram.

All Windows performance instances and monitoring shows all of our servers
are running as well as can be. None of the major sub-systems (processor,
network, memory) are being utilized over 50%. The threads; fast = 2/4 list
= 2/8. Given the little processing time/power, it seems like this could go
higher, if we had a larger load.

Both our DB and IIS server will support other applications. Hence, they
are only being “throttled-down” to around 1GB of ram.
Drive space seems unlimited.

Thanks in advance.

Indeed. Misclassifying issues can be the equivalent of crying wolf, and can
cause support to not respond in a timely manner when you really need them
to. If you must up-classify something that is more time-sensitive than
critical, do so sparingly, and only when you really can justify it. Abusing
the process can get all of your tickets ignored.

Yes they should. However please use the Severity values correctly:

Ref:
http://www.bmc.com/info_center_support/overview/0,,19097_4736154_39703040,00

"
Severity Level 1 = Critical Service Impact

Issue critically affects the primary business service, major application, or
mission critical system. Customer resources should be available and willing
to work on a 24x7 basis with BMC to resolve the issue. Characteristics of a
Severity 1 issue include:

  Business service is not operational
  Production system crashes
  Data integrity at risk
Production backup and recovery operations fail.
"

Also please note that your BMC support contracts only really buy you defined
"Initial Response Goals" based on . ( Which simply is not "resolution
time".) Yes they do all they can to get you to resolution, but... there are
limits to the amount of effort they will devote to your issue if you are not
paying for the highest levels of support.
(And the sky is almost the limit to the "highest levels of support".
They do, last time I really looked, offer "custom support options" for those
companies who really want to spend +22% support bills per year too. Options
like... they will keep physical hardware with your custom application on it,
and actually support it. :) )

Changed-By-Another-Check: Y

2007-01-31 Thread Mathieu Pitre
Hi all,

Long time no see. I have a new employer with some new challenges...

Here is my question:

How can I update the core Field "Modified Date" from another form without
displaying the "Changed-By-Another-Check" error message when someone is
editing the record. In fact, the application is an in-house service desk.
It is used to create requests and work orders. Now, the client wants me to
remove the message that the user is getting when he/she creates a work
order from the request.

When a user creates a work order, he/she creates it from the request entry.
Now, if the user save the work order, an active link Set Field (SQL) is
fired to update the "Modified Date" in the request entry. Then if the user
add something in the Request entry and save the entry he/she gets
the "Changed-By-Another-Check" error message. The user know that the
message notify him/her about is/her own change and therefore they would
like to remove this warning message.

Is there any mechanism which would allow me to remove the message for this
particular scenario? I know that I could remove the message from the
ars.conf file but this will remove the warning message for the entire
server.

Tips for dealing with Remedy's new support site

2007-01-31 Thread Joseph Kubasek

Here is a few of things I stumbled over that may reduce your frustration
level in using the new support site.

* When you are defining "My Product List", if you first enter a string in
the 'Product Name' field, then the menu only returns items that contain that
string.

* The search is case insensitive.

* "BMC Remedy AR System Server" is for version 7+.

* "Remedy AR System Server" is for version 6.0 and 6.0.3.

Re: Remedy Client Uninstaller?

2007-01-31 Thread Michiel Beijen

This was what I was looking for, found it today in the Release Notes 700
guide:

Keeping settings from pre-6.3 BMC Remedy User
Although upgrading BMC Remedy User is not supported, you can keep your
old settings from pre-6.3 versions of the tool.
* To keep your server lists, saved searches, and reports

  1. Do not uninstall the pre-6.3 BMC Remedy User.
  2. Install the new BMC Remedy User tool into a different directory
  from your pre-6.3 tool.
  3. Uninstall the pre-6.3 BMC Remedy User.

The current BMC Remedy User installer will copy your settings from the old
pre-6.3 directory to the new directory. This way you can keep your server

I believe this is mentioned in the instructions.

You should just check in your procedures wheter or not there is a 5.x

client installed and then uninstall that, before you install 7.

Re: Changed-By-Another-Check: Y

2007-01-31 Thread Grooms, Frederick W
My question would be why are you using SQL to update a record. Why not
use a filter Push Fields action?

Another option... Open the Work Order in a Dialog. When they save the
Work Order (and close it) you could then auto save the Request.

Subject: Changed-By-Another-Check: Y

Hi all,

Long time no see. I have a new employer with some new challenges...

Here is my question:

How can I update the core Field "Modified Date" from another form
without displaying the "Changed-By-Another-Check" error message when
someone is editing the record. In fact, the application is an in-house
service desk.
It is used to create requests and work orders. Now, the client wants me
to remove the message that the user is getting when he/she creates a
work order from the request.

When a user creates a work order, he/she creates it from the request
entry.
Now, if the user save the work order, an active link Set Field (SQL) is
fired to update the "Modified Date" in the request entry. Then if the
user add something in the Request entry and save the entry he/she gets
the "Changed-By-Another-Check" error message. The user know that the
message notify him/her about is/her own change and therefore they would
like to remove this warning message.

Is there any mechanism which would allow me to remove the message for
this particular scenario? I know that I could remove the message from
the ars.conf file but this will remove the warning message for the
entire server.

Another related tip, I noticed when submitting a new issue, the Product*
field is read-only when first attempting to add information. This
forces one to select from the attached menu.

The work-around for this is to select from the field to the right and
select "All Products". This appears to enable the Products field.

At this point, you can a product name and select from the menu and only
those items matching %product% will appear in the Product* menu.

Thanks,

frustration level in using the new support site.

* When you are defining "My Product List", if you first enter a string
in the 'Product Name' field, then the menu only returns items that
contain that string.

* The search is case insensitive.

* "BMC Remedy AR System Server" is for version 7+.

Maybe in this case, WE ARE QA?

On a good note, we did go the installation executables path. We
upgraded our ARS, Email, and Flashboards 6.3 P18 to ARS 6.3 P20 on a
Windows 2003/Remote SQL Server environment. We uninstalled Mid-Tier
7.0.0 Patch 1 from our Windows 2003/IIS/Servlet Exec server, before
installing Mid-Tier 7.0.1 Patch 1 on Windows 2003/IIS 6/Apache Tomcat

All components were upgraded with the installation executables.

So far so good, but its in our dev environment.

A customer should reasonably expect that before QA (Quality Assurance)
gets their hands on a patch that the "release" would be finalized and
any problems that QA finds would be fixed (and spawn a new release set
to be retested by QA) before it is released to the customers. The QA
approved release should be the exact form that it was released to QA,
because there were zero bugs/problems found by QA.

I mean if QA has Engineering do the install/setup it is not exactly a
fair test now is it? ( Well, it certainly does not test everything that
obviously needs to be tested. )

Re: ITSM 7 MidTier Install

2007-01-31 Thread Lucero, Michelle - IST contractor
Hi, Frank:

We had the same issue after a 7.0.01 Patch 1 install on Windows 2003/IIS
6/Apache Tomcat, Java 1.6.

Updating the Initial and Maximum Memory Pool helped us.
On your Mid-Tier server,
Go to Configure Tomcat
Click the Java tab
Enter a reasonable Initial Memory pool in megabytes
Enter a reasonable Maximum Memory Pool in megabytes (based on the Memory
available on your server)
We then restarted IIS or rebooted and it came up.

I think someone provided a link to Apache Tomcat setup information
yesterday. You may want to check that for some base numbers.

By the way, I've been told that it is best to have 2 gigs of RAM on a
stand-alone Mid-Tier server.

Hope that helps,

Re: Tips for dealing with Remedy's new support site

2007-01-31 Thread strauss
I have found that it is worth the initial effort to go ahead and define
your products list, since it saves an awful lot of time later when you
avoid scrolling through pages of BMC products to find yours. It is even
more useful to define your custom product list under documentation, a
separate process, after which you get regular email updates with direct
links to the pdf files as new release notes, technical bulletins, and
other documents are released. IMHO, that is by far the best feature of
the new supportweb.

Re: ARS 7.0 Install as non-root user

2007-01-31 Thread Dwayne Martin
Hi Axton,

Some time ago you offered to help me if I ran into problems
doing a non-root install in ARS 7.01. I hope that offer is
still good.

Here is what happened. The install went OK, after a few
snags. But when we restart the system we get all sorts of
messages about improperly defined objects.

Some of these are about filters. In each case the filter is
not in the filter list in the Admin tool for the new database.
But when I try to import the missing filter from the old
database I get "This violates a unique index." The filter IS
in the "filter" table.

I am working with Remedy support. They sent me a script for
updating the number of actions in the "filter" record. The
problem is that the "filter" record for each filter has the
same number of actions in the new database as in the old. So I
don't think that the "numactions" is the problem.

There is one message about the number of actions, but it
doesn't say what the filter is. This is even more worrisome.
There are quite a few messages where they don't even say what
the object is.

I am attaching a screen print of the start-up messages. If
you have time to look at them I would be glad for your
suggestions. If not, I realize that we are all busy people.

Like I say, I am working with Support, but I would still be
glad for your opinion.

Best Wishes,
Dwayne Martin

Subject: Changed-By-Another-Check: Y

Hi all,

Long time no see. I have a new employer with some new challenges...

Here is my question:

How can I update the core Field "Modified Date" from another form without
displaying the "Changed-By-Another-Check" error message when someone is
editing the record. In fact, the application is an in-house service desk.
It is used to create requests and work orders. Now, the client wants me to
remove the message that the user is getting when he/she creates a work order
from the request.

When a user creates a work order, he/she creates it from the request entry.
Now, if the user save the work order, an active link Set Field (SQL) is
fired to update the "Modified Date" in the request entry. Then if the user
add something in the Request entry and save the entry he/she gets the
"Changed-By-Another-Check" error message. The user know that the message
notify him/her about is/her own change and therefore they would like to
remove this warning message.

Is there any mechanism which would allow me to remove the message for this
particular scenario? I know that I could remove the message from the
ars.conf file but this will remove the warning message for the entire
server.

Re: System Requirements (W2k3 ram?) / performance

2007-01-31 Thread Lucero, Michelle - IST contractor
Hi, Nick:

You've given us a big clue. Besides all of the RAM and system
requirements, you mentioned that "other pages seems fine".

We went through a rework of our custom Home page. The initial display
time use to be pretty bad. I mean like a full minute to come up.

We received permission to rework it. It takes about 1-1.5 seconds to
come up now.

Very IMPORTANT:
If you haven't already, turn on Active Link AND Global logging on your
account and a test account.

It will boggle the mind. You might find yourself swimming in a sea of
active links that fire twice. It makes me nuts to see active links that
have an execute on BOTH Window Open and Window Loaded. The ones that
send me into a tailspin is when they add the third execute-on of on
"Display" just for flavor.

We also upgraded from ARS 6.3 Patch 13 to Patch 18. That helped response
time in both the User Tool and Mid-Tier.

Hope that helps.

Subject: System Requirements (W2k3 ram?) / performance

I have been told our Remedy server should have 1GIG of ram per
processor.
Is this a "basic" standard?

Our web performance seems hesitant. After logging on, it take 3 - 5
seconds for the home page to come up. Then another 1 - 2 seconds for
Support Console to come up. Other pages seems fine.

The Mid-Tier does not show performance problems, although I am not sure
what more to turn on for logging. I currently have Warnings (usually
set
to Severe) with Cache, Performance, Servlet, Web Services being logged.

80 concurrent users during the day - all are using the Mid-Tier
interface.

Each server has two (2) dual-core 2.8Ghz or better processors, and 1GB
NICs.

Our Remedy server only has 1GB of ram.
SQL server has 4GB of ram.
IIS has 2GB of ram.

All Windows performance instances and monitoring shows all of our
servers
are running as well as can be. None of the major sub-systems
(processor,
network, memory) are being utilized over 50%. The threads; fast = 2/4
list
= 2/8. Given the little processing time/power, it seems like this could
go
higher, if we had a larger load.

Both our DB and IIS server will support other applications. Hence, they

are only being "throttled-down" to around 1GB of ram.
Drive space seems unlimited.

Thanks in advance.

While talking about the support site, I thought I might try to ask if anybody
experienced any problems with the BMC Remedy Product Download link.

When I click on it, I only get a blank page with a white rectangle in the left
top corner (it edges are actually grey). No messages, nothing.

I raised it with support few weeks ago, but their suggestions so far have not
made any difference.

Could it be related to the fact that my PC is behind our corporate firewall?

Any suggestions or hints are welcome.

Thanks.

I have found that it is worth the initial effort to go ahead and define your
products list, since it saves an awful lot of time later when you avoid
scrolling through pages of BMC products to find yours. It is even more useful
to define your custom product list under documentation, a separate process,
after which you get regular email updates with direct links to the pdf files as
new release notes, technical bulletins, and other documents are released. IMHO,
that is by far the best feature of the new supportweb.

Another related tip, I noticed when submitting a new issue, the Product* field
is read-only when first attempting to add information. This forces one to
select from the attached menu.

The work-around for this is to select from the field to the right and select
"All Products". This appears to enable the Products field.

At this point, you can a product name and select from the menu and only those
items matching %product% will appear in the Product* menu.

Thanks,

level in using the new support site.

* When you are defining "My Product List", if you first enter a string in the
'Product Name' field, then the menu only returns items that contain that
string.

* The search is case insensitive.

* "BMC Remedy AR System Server" is for version 7+.

Thanks for the reply, you can never have too much information (well okay,

BTW, to answer your question, AVG Idle time is more important because it
gives you a reference over time about how busy the thread was. The MIN
Idle time only gives you a point in time reference... meaning, it tells
you ONLY how long the shortest period was before the thread recieved
another request.

I probably shoulda only answered your question instead of the book in the

OK guys - I'm lost. We have the web service built - we can create a

Filters limit for an operation ???

Hello,

operation) >1 ? Does it work fine if the limit changed from 1 to 25000
? If somebody knows please share. We have ARS 6.3,Helpdesk 6.0 and currently it
is working on limit 1. But up to this limit one of our process is giving
'Too many filters error'. Logical breaking of the process is very difficult for
us. So we need the solution by increasing the limit of filters.

Re: ARS 7.0 Install as non-root user

2007-01-31 Thread Grooms, Frederick W
It looks like each of the filters has a bad action and that is causing
the count of actions to be off. When you imported did you mark the
"Replace Options on the Destination Server" option?

You have 7 bad action value, 7 Incorrect format in the definition file,
and 7 numactions errors. I think each of the 7 filters has a bad action
and that causes the numaction error.

If necessary you might have to do the following ( *** LAST RESORT *** )

   1. Find the FilterID for each of the 7 filters.
   2. In each of the FILTER_% tables delete the records for those
FilterID(s)
   3. Re-Import the 7 filters

Hope this helps some.

Subject: Re: ARS 7.0 Install as non-root user

Hi Axton,

Some time ago you offered to help me if I ran into problems doing a
non-root install in ARS 7.01. I hope that offer is still good.

Here is what happened. The install went OK, after a few snags. But
when we restart the system we get all sorts of messages about improperly
defined objects.

Some of these are about filters. In each case the filter is not in the
filter list in the Admin tool for the new database.
But when I try to import the missing filter from the old database I get
"This violates a unique index." The filter IS in the "filter" table.

I am working with Remedy support. They sent me a script for updating
the number of actions in the "filter" record. The problem is that the
"filter" record for each filter has the same number of actions in the
new database as in the old. So I don't think that the "numactions" is
the problem.

There is one message about the number of actions, but it doesn't say
what the filter is. This is even more worrisome.
There are quite a few messages where they don't even say what the object
is.

I am attaching a screen print of the start-up messages. If you have
time to look at them I would be glad for your suggestions. If not, I
realize that we are all busy people.

Like I say, I am working with Support, but I would still be glad for
your opinion.

Best Wishes,
Dwayne Martin

RESOLVED: ARS 7, Windows 2003 (64bit), Oracle 10g

2007-01-31 Thread Russell Wurth

Apparently, I am experiencing issues due to a bug in Oracle.

To summarize for anyone else that is interested, I was attempting to run ARS
7.0.1 on Win2003 64 bit and Oracle 10g (10.2) 64 bit with a 32 bit Oracle
client installed separately since the 64 bit database did not install lib32. The ARS install connected and created the database and some arsystem
tables, but failed to load forms and data, and the server subsequently failing to start, giving an ORA-06413 error.

The Oracle bug is that the networking layer cannot interpret parenthesis in a directory name. AR Server, by default, goes into 'Program Files (x86)'.
 Details are here:

http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=159581&SiteID=1

My workaround, since I don't have a metalink account to get a patch, was to
install AR Server under a directory without parenthesis in the name,
'D:\ARServer'. This worked.

Also, during the install do not forget to indicate that the Oracle database is
on a remote machine, a requirement for connecting to a database with a
different version of the client. I had to do this even though the client,
database, and AR Server were on the same box. The Oracle connection string
I used was the following format:
//servername:1521/dbSID

This gets set as the Oracle-Two-Task in ar.conf. I did not have to set any
Windows environment variables, as one typically has to do on a UNIX/Linux
install.

Hope this helps with anyone else running a similar configuration and choses to
do an arslist search on this problem rather than Remedy's KB

Thanks for the response. I had success in the past doing exactly what you did

 a different beast.

Anyone out there with any Windows/Oracle experience? Do I set ORACLE_HOME,
ORACLE_SID environment variables?

Other than my initial troubleshooting, I downloaded and installed the full
client in a separate directory.

Again, the install runs, creates ARSystem schema, but then I get the following
error when attempting to import workflow:

ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specified

The only thing in my ar.conf file that is DB related is the following:

Oracle-Two-Task: devdb01

your 64Bit env and how it fuction with the 32 Bit Oracle client, or ARS 32 bit on the 64 Bit OS.. Check the Archives.. of the list.

Hope this helps some.

All,

anyone with a similar configuration. I have performed

installations

on various UNIX platforms many times before, and a few Windows 32 bit ones, but
never Win 64bit.

The 64bit Oracle installation did not create an ORACLE_HOME\lib32 directory, just a regular lib directory. The Remedy install would not
proceed, so I downloaded and installed the 32bit Oracle Instant Client and installed it in the lib32 directory. The Remedy install found this

directory and proceeded successfully, creating the ARSystem tablespace and
ARAdmin user account, as well as necessary tables. I had to use
the following as my Oracle Connection String, as the Remedy install did not
connect to just the SID: //servername:1521/dbsid. Again, the
database is on the same server that I am installing ARS, this suggestion comes
from the installation notes

The install failed during the importing of sample data and workflow. I
discovered the following in my arerror.log:

ORA-06413: Connection not open Cannot initialize contact with SQL database
(ARERR 551)

This error occurs any time I start and stop the server. I am able to connect
via SQL Plus (in ORACLE_HOME\bin) as ARAdmin and see the arschema
 tables.

Do I need to install the 32bit Oracle full client with a 32bit SQLPlus? Does
this go in my ORACLE_HOME or another directory?

Thanks in advance for any assistance

Re: Verifying that ARS 6.3 Patch 20 Worked DST

2007-01-31 Thread Pierson, Shawn
My plan was to simply do a few things like the following:

1) Create a few tickets with the current date.
2) Change the date to right after the DST change and create a few
tickets.
3) Modify the tickets created in step 1.
4) Verify everything worked as expected in steps 1 - 3.
5) Repeat all above steps but substitute the date we return to standard
time from DST.

The system I support currently is not as date critical as a lot of
companies, so a minimal amount of testing is appropriate for me. You
may want something more detailed, but I would suggest at least doing
what I mentioned above.

Re: Filters limit for an operation ???

2007-01-31 Thread Randy Simon
I have mine set to as high as it will go in the Admin tool without any problem.
From time to time need to run a process that needs the MAX. Sometimes I need to
change it at the ar.cfg file.

Please remember why it is there, to prevent endless loops. Caution will be all
you need.

Subject: Filters limit for an operation ???

Hello,

Is anybody using limit for (File->Server Information->Maximum filters for an
operation) >1 ? Does it work fine if the limit changed from 1 to 25000
? If somebody knows please share. We have ARS 6.3,Helpdesk 6.0 and currently it
is working on limit 1. But up to this limit one of our process is giving
'Too many filters error'. Logical breaking of the process is very difficult for
us. So we need the solution by increasing the limit of filters.

Regards,
Tarun

Hey all,

I have installed BMC Discovery Service 2003 for 5.6 and created an

And this list extends on for about 400 entries or so, any ideas?

Re: System Requirements (W2k3 ram?) / performance

2007-01-31 Thread Michael Worts
Nick,

You did not mention what patches you were on. I would recommend upgrading
to the latest patches on AR server and Midtier as they can sometimes
resolve these unusual problems. Maybe, for some reason, the midtier is
caching each time you load the home page - possibly? Do you have the same
type of performance behaviours on your test/dev servers as a comparison?

Subject
System Requirements (W2k3 ram?) / performance

I have been told our Remedy server should have 1GIG of ram per processor.
Is this a ?basic? standard?

Our web performance seems hesitant. After logging on, it take 3 ? 5
seconds for the home page to come up. Then another 1 ? 2 seconds for
Support Console to come up.

Each server has two (2) dual-core 2.8Ghz or better processors, and 1GB
NICs.

Our Remedy server only has 1GB of ram.
SQL server has 4GB of ram.
IIS has 2GB of ram.

All Windows performance instances and monitoring shows all of our servers
are running as well as can be. None of the major sub-systems (processor,
network, memory) are being utilized over 50%. The threads; fast = 2/4
list
= 2/8. Given the little processing time/power, it seems like this could
go
higher, if we had a larger load.

Both our DB and IIS server will support other applications. Hence, they
are only being ?throttled-down? to around 1GB of ram.
Drive space seems unlimited.

Thanks in advance.

Escalation Reports

2007-01-31 Thread James Collins
Hello,

I have a requirement where I have to run a report once a week collecting the
number of entries for a particular form with all of the appropriate data. I
can create the report, but do not see a convenient and well thought out way
via Remedy to have this run automatically through its workflow. I thought
perhaps an escalation.

Any Suggestions?

Configuring Prefetch on MidTier 7.X and ITSM

2007-01-31 Thread Terry Bootsma

Hello everyone:

Here is the situation:

ITSM Service Desk 7.X (Incident/Problem)
CMDB 2.0.1
MidTier 7.0.1 with ServletExec / IIS
Windows 2K03
Localized Views for French/English

As you may have seen from previous postings to the list,
the only method of obtaining acceptable performance from
the mid-tier upon initial use is to configure the
"prefetch" using the prefetchConfig.xml file on the
server. However, given that we are "localized"
(French/English) and have different types of users
(permissions) accessing the application (each user type is
cached separately by mid-tier), it has made this file
extremely difficult to create, maintain, and debug. I've
referenced the presentation given at RUG as well as the
prefetch7.0.doc that support provides... but to no avail.

Also... upon initial startup... it currently takes 45
minutes for the midtier to cache all the necessary forms
for my server... affecting my end user performance and my
ability to efficiently test/debug if I've got my
prefetchConfig.xml file correct

I can see this being an acceptable solution for a small
application that uses 20 or so forms. But for the ITSM
suite, this has become an exercise in frustration! Has
anybody else gotten this prefetch thing to work in an
acceptable fashion for the ITSM suite of products? If so,
can you send me your prefetchConfig.xml file off the list?
At this point, I'm thinking about pointing everyone to
use the User Tool vs. the MidTier unless I can get
this solved. As most people have pointed out on the list,
support doesn't seem to be much help on this feature
either.

Thanks a bunch..

Terry

2007-01-31 Thread Candace DeCou
Thanks Christopher - I wasn't aware of the advantages of customizing the
product list under documentation but will certainly do so now. However,
I do have my product list for all my servers and applications customized
in the Support section for submission of tickets, but whenever I do
submit a ticket they always come back and ask me what my environment
is...so, are they just not paying attention to that or ?? Does anyone
know? I always have to duplicate what I have already set up in the
product list.

Just my rag for the day - sorry.

Thanks,

** Here is a few of things I stumbled over that may reduce your
frustration level in using the new support site.

* When you are defining "My Product List", if you first enter a string
in the 'Product Name' field, then the menu only returns items that
contain that string.

* The search is case insensitive.

* "BMC Remedy AR System Server" is for version 7+.

* "Remedy AR System Server" is for version 6.0 and 6.0.3.

James,

An escalation is about the only Remedy way to do this. Here is an
excerpt from the Runmacro vs Macro in client thread from earlier this
month:

I recently did something very similar and encounter some of the issues
you are seeing. What I have is an escalation (because the report is
needed on a reoccurring basis to meet audit requirements) which has a
Run Process action. The command line of the Run Process looks like:

c:\\progra~1\\remedy\\reports\\report.bat $zTmpDate$

where $zTmpDate$ is a variable I pass to the file being generated to
make it unique.

The batch file (report.bat) looks like:

Part of the no file issue you are seeing seems to be related to the way
the command line interface treats the DOS-like commands, which is why
there are doubled slashes in the batch and command line of the run
process. Make sure that the name of the macro (seen above, first line
of the macro) matches the macro name in the runmacro command (end of the
third line of the batch file above).

Netcool 7.1 + ARS 7.0.1 ? (SOLVED)

2007-01-31 Thread Tony Worthington
Well, it appears Netcool doesn't like anything but the 6.30

When replaced with the 6.30 no patch, everything works as designed

We've tried both the 6.3 and 7.0.1 api's and neither work. I have on API

Thad,

Well, rrrLic is the most popular one. Probably because it is easier to
understand than hardcor logfile analysis...

Regardless of the tool you use (Notepad works), I would urge everyone to
use the logfiles more. Both for performance and troubleshooting issues.
You do not need to know that much to make use of them.

I did a presentation at UKRUG about performance tuning with logfiles.
Please let me know if you want a copy of the presentation. It goes through
the important API-calls for performance, and maps them to the actual
workflow involved to trigger them.

upgrade for DST

2007-01-31 Thread Mahan, Janet L [EQ]
We are currently on a unix server Sun0S 5.9, ARS 6.00.01 patch 1351 and Sybase
12.5.1/EBF 11657 ESD#2. It is my understanding that we need to upgrade to at
least 6.0.3 patch 20 for DST and upgrade the mid-tier. Is this correct?

Has anyone performed a similar upgrade and identified any problems? How long
does this usually take?

Good Afternoon,

I have two consultants (an Asset Manager and Senior Remedy
Developer) both based here in San Diego that are coming off of a project
soon. Both individuals have active secret clearances. However, they
are available for both government and commercial sector work, local or
travel. I can be very competitive on rates and can also entertain
sub-contracting/partnering opportunities...

If you know of anyone that has a project (short or long term)
that we may be able to help out with, please let me know or feel free to
pass on my contact information...

I look forward to seeing you at the next SDRUG or OCLARUG...

Re: ARLogAnalyzer output

2007-01-31 Thread Matt Reinfeldt
Thad,

Look at it this way: the output is telling you, that for the timeframe you
logged, your Fast Threads are waiting, on average, 1.1 seconds between
calls. and your List Threads are all waiting about 2.5 seconds. now, there
are periods of time when the system is really crunching, and there's very
little idle time (the MIN values). but, for the most part (the AVG), they're
acting like they've got all the time in the world (if you live in a world of
nanoseconds as CPU's do.).

Not knowing anything else about your system (like how long of a snapshot
this covered, how many users were logged in, how many CPUs do you use, how
much RAM, and several other factors), I'd say that it is a healthy system.
However, as I just pointed out, there are other factors that weigh into
that, which are, to us, the peanut gallery, an unknown.

So, long story short. the AVG is what I'd really watch. :-) (although, if
you note the MIN times on the List threads, you'll note that 6 of the 8 went
through a period of time where the calls to them were right on top of each
other (0. MIN Idle Time = no rest for the wicked!), so it might be worth
looking at the API and SQL logs in detail to see what was pinging them so
heavily during that timeframe.

Good luck!

Hello,

I haven't had much occasion to use the log analyzer very much, and I want to
make sure I'm interpreting the results correctly as part of thread tuning.
In determining if I need to increase my threads, which column is more
important, the "AVG Idle Time" or the "MIN Idle Time"? I can see it either
way and was hoping someone would share their experience.

Thanks,

Hello,
So we tried a value of 16, that didn't work. We tried 7, and that didn't
work either. The AREA is still being called twice.
Here are some logs (user.log) to show it attempts to login twice (I'm going

As you can see clearly, it calls AREA twice within a few milliseconds from
each other. So if I was using a Single Sign-On, this obviously wouldn't work
because a single-use token cannot be used twice. Would anyone have an idea
as to why it is still calling the AREA twice?

First, I would code the AREA plug-in to handle all calls properly. You do
not need to authenticate on the subsequent calls unless a timeout is
reached. You will need to provide address info and an OK return code.

Then, yes, 16 seems like it should work though the comments are confusing.
Perhaps 7 is more correct.

Note that you will have to restart the plug-in server to reload this value.

Hello Ben,
I looked at the Configuration Guide's list of the parameters related to area
and notification and this is what i found:

Add the bits together to implement multiple parameters. e.g., a value of 31
will disable all callbacks.

You may want to review the technical bulletin at:
http://www.bmc.com/supportu/documents/78/29/67829/67829.pdf to determine
if your environment will be affected by the DST event. If you are not

All,

Funny that this subject would come up like this, but just Monday I got a
request to build the three second interval counter to show characters
remaining. Works.

I was concerned about performance too, so my test form has one active link
that calculates the remaining space in 16 character fields (set fields X =
255 - LENGTH($field$) every three seconds (one set field action, 16 fields).
The integer fields have no label, disabled change flag, and is displayed as
text adjacent to each character field. If you watch closely Aruser's CPU was
up by a (one) percent when this window is open, but you're only typing in
one field at a time. No human-discernable pause, but the workflow log gets
pretty large...

There's no client-server traffic in this, networking's not an issue.

Re: Workflow

2007-01-31 Thread Rick Cook
Doug, not that this is a big deal or anything, but if the earlier report
that the 3 second interval AL was synced to happen all at once for multiple
clients, that means that either there is C/S traffic, or that there is some
variable set on the client as a result of the AL and form load.

Plus, you mentioned that logs got larger when it was active. Were those
client logs or server?

I'm not picking at you, I just want to be as clear as I can be on some of
the find points of how it all works.

Doug

It goes
through the important API-calls for performance, and maps them to the
actual workflow involved to trigger them.

Best Regards - Misi, RRR AB, http://www.rrr.se

Our limit has been set at 5 for quite awhile now, and it is working fine at
that setting.

Regards,
Tarun

Depends on your applications. If you're running full ITSM 7.0, or something
as heavy as that, you might want to bump that higher. I'm pretty sure the
recommended setting is mentioned in the docs.

Filter Scripting Issue (plugin dying)

2007-01-31 Thread Kern, Robert SBA
Hello list,

AR6.3p20 (prod and test box / prod is server group, test is single)
Win2k3
MSSQL (external at prod, same server at test)

We are experiencing some issues with the Filter Scripting Plugin (available at
the community downloads).

It works all well at the test box.

At the prod box it works fine at first as well (for example by just using the
provided example), but after some minutes we get the error message that the
plug-in server can not be connected at this time (until starting arplugin.exe
again -> it works a few minutes after that until it stops working again).

Both servers share the same config settings (best to my knowledge), have the
same patch level (both upgraded with the installer) and same dll's and such
(something must be different though, as there are no issues at the test box).

...just wondering if anyone has run into that issue so far, or might have any
thought what might be going wrong here ?

[the plugin is nice for making use of some VB.net code ... we use that for
playing around with MS AD values ... really nice ... it would be a pitty having
to do that within a webpage or some other "non Remedy integrated" means]

My best guess at the moment is, as the plug-in was written for 6.0, that there
may be an issue with the dll's after all. However, test and prod seem to be
identical in that matter (had word that the plug-in may be updated to 7, not
only the Java part ... so perhaps that may solve the issue then as well ... not
counting on that possibly fixing the issue thouh :-) ).

Thanks anyone and best greetings from Germany,

Robert
