Re: Row level access with flashboards

2007-09-12 Thread Jason Miller
Thanks Carey and David. I really appreciate the feedback.

Carey, I didn't think about it from a statistical information point of view.
With the way it currently works an admin/developer has the option to show
statistical information but still protect the actual record as you
mentioned. If it were locked down to row level permissions this would not be
an option, limiting design capabilities. The desired locked down result
could be obtained by using the user's group list in the FB Variable
qualification.

David, thanks for confirming this is as designed (again your participation
in this list is greatly appreciated). Your explanation of how it technically
works helps. I do have a little trouble with understanding how defining the
permission at design time (mentioned by both yourself and Carey) relate to
the permission of the record data being displayed. The permissions defined
in the admin tool grant right to see the flashboard object(s) but does not
have any effect on record data being displayed in the FB, correct?

This may be taken a bit out of context for flashboards and row level access
but in BMC Remedy Action Request System 7.0 Concepts on page 101 there is
the following section:

The additive nature of permissions

Access control in AR System is additive. Each user starts out with no access
permissions; administrators then add permissions as needed. In this way, AR
System implements strict access control. Administrators must make a
conscious decision to grant access to specific groups on a case-by-case
basis.

I usually take the start with no access and grant it as needed approach.
That may be why I was caught a bit off guard when I noticed this behavior.

To look at the other side of the UNIX disk usage example... Now a list of
valid user accounts has been created (possibly ordered by most active ones)
that could be use to try an launch an attack on a system. Granted the list
could show full name and not the actual username... I get your point, just a
little bit of devil's advocate ;-)

It is as designed and not considered a defect.

The thing to keep in mind is that the admin user is typically the one

doing the query [to be able to see information across multiple

permission groups] for the flashboard (as defined at design time), not

the user. Thus, since the admin can see all data, all the info is

passed into the high level response that Flashboards use for display.

As mentioned, the data itself is not available and is protected by row

level security when users drill down.

It's kind of like if you wrote a program (as root) that listed the users

on a UNIX system with the highest disk usage for everyone to see - you

would be posting high level information about each user (e.g. disk

usage), but the users themselves could not see the actual data that was

taking up the space.

Jason,

I think that what you are seeing is as designed. I hold this position

because you can control the permissions (at design time) to the

Flashboard object. So the developer has to have some ability to expose

or hide the data for the targeted users.

I think the real difficulty is that statistical information (like Count,

Max, Min, etc) might need to be done across all of the application level

restrictions for management to really get the whole picture for the

business. So I can see a good argument for allowing Flashboards to show

such things. However, when the user goes to drill down into the data,

then I would think it reasonable for the results to be limited to the

portion that the individual user has access too.

Example:

Flashboard to show number of order that are 4 or more days old that

are not yet Sent to the customer.

I would think that the President would have enough access to see all

order from all departments. So when they drill down they see the whole

picture. However a head of a department might only see the orders from

their department when they drill down.

I would also suspect that the Group By clauses would likely match (very

However, we only have three SQL servers currently available - a SQL2K

The idea was to install ARS 5.1.2 onto a vmware session on our ARS 7 dev

(blank) database on SQL2K5, set the compatibility level, but ARS 5.1.2
displays a Error Invlaid object name 'sysxlogins'.

So what I'll have to do is install the 5.1.2 dev environment onto the
5.1.2 live database, take a backup. Restore that to the SQL2K5 dev
system, and re-install, or something along those lines?

2007-09-12 Thread Tom Shurmur
Rami,

The benefits of an Class/Subclass data model include enforcement of common
attributes among similar types of CIs and the ability to search within not just
a given class of CIs, but within any branch of the hierarchy. From a base class
from which all others are derived, you can search for all CIs or all
relationships.

So an example of this would be a Switch and its components. A Switch is made
up of a 1 Chassis, multiple Controllers (Soup Engs), Multiple Power Supplies,
and Multiple Cards. Building Parent/Child relationships allows you to track the
individual components like a card or power supply by serial number/asset tag.
If a card needs to be replaced you remove the relationship and add the new card
and build the relationship. The old card can be sent in for repair and tracked.
When repaired, this card can be used in any switch that needs it.

I hope this answers your question.

I don't know why it took me more than 10 years to figure out this one.
The escalation log actually shows you if you are running late, for
example if some escalation is taking so long that it delays others. If
you never have had this problem they you probably have not tried hard
enough.

Whe the escalations are running late they create a log entry that has
the currentime and the firetime

I let the esclation log run overnight and I wanted to see how late (in
seconds) the escalations were delayed. This works on our linux. I'm sure
there are smart people that have solved this before, but I thought it
was cool enough to share.

% grep set firetime of 1 second, firetime arescl.log | awk '{print
$23-$21, late at, $20, $21, $22, $23, $24}' | grep -v ^0 | sort -nr
| mail -s late escalations report [EMAIL PROTECTED]

The output looks something like this:

1495 late at firetime 1188930731, currenttime 1188932226
1097 late at firetime 1188973269, currenttime 1188974366
1093 late at firetime 1188961114, currenttime 1188962207

ITSM 7 is quite different in that you don't submit directly to the Incident
form. There is another form called HPD:IncidentInterface_Create that you
submit your requests to via email which calls the workflow to generate the
actual Incident ticket including generating the field 100161 for the
HPD:Help Desk form.

Re: Row level access with flashboards

Jason,

RE:

The permissions defined in the admin tool grant right to see the
Flashboard object(s) but does not have any effect on record data being
displayed in the FB, correct?

Since you are more interested in the technical details... here is a
quick overview of what I see going on with Flashboards.

Actually, the data that Flashboards displays is a separate data set
than the source data that the Flashboard variables point at.
FB:History and FB:History Summary if memory serves is the actual
data stores used by the Flashboard objects. It looks like the v7.1
version of these forms the data is totally locked down and only an
Admin can actually see the cached data. (The form and the rows are
Public [which seems silly to me], but the actual values are admin
only.)

The data is collected by the Flashboard server based on the definition
of the Flashboard variables as an admin user.

So when the users are looking at a Flashboard they are really seeing
the FB:History and FB:History Summary data and not the source
forms that the variables are pointed at. However, when they drill
down then the user is directed to the Source form with the proper
qualification to match the Variable/group by/additional Flashboard
qualification/restrictions for the UI that the user is clicking on.
That is then also restricted to the users Group List access for the
source data.

HTH.

Re: New Java Plugin Server Problems

2007-09-12 Thread Papolu, Appajee
Axton,

We think this is a defect in armonitor with command lines that have
exactly (or multiples) of 10 arguments. We fill fix the defect.

But in the mean time, if you're seeing this problem, you can workaround
the issue by removing the option -m at the end of the monitor entry.
[This option is not used by the Java plug-in server itself, and is
retained just for backward compatibility for C plug-ins that may use it
for whatever reason].

java -Xmx512m -classpath
/usr/ar/sundev71/pluginsvr:/usr/ar/sundev71/pluginsvr/arpluginsvr71.jar
com.bmc.arsys.plugin
vr.ARPluginServerMain -x sundev71 -i /usr/ar/sundev71

Or, may be you can add an extra argument to ensure your command line
does not 10 items, for example as in:

java -DNoTenArgsNow=HaHaHa -Xmx512m -classpath
/usr/ar/sundev71/pluginsvr:/usr/ar/sundev71/pluginsvr/arpluginsvr71.jar
com.bmc.arsys.plugin
vr.ARPluginServerMain -x sundev71 -i /usr/ar/sundev71 -m

This is on Solaris 10 sparc64x2 with a remote Oracle 10g instance

This only seems to be an issue when using libumem as the memory

arsystem script):

UMEM_DEBUG=default
UMEM_LOGGING=transaction
LD_PRELOAD=libumem.so.1
export UMEM_DEBUG UMEM_LOGGING LD_PRELOAD

Without this, it starts just fine.

Guys,

Read the script. It is the awk script that prints the text late at so no
greps will find it in the escalation log (unless you have an escalation named
...late at...)

Re: Error: Plug-In server is not responding

2007-09-12 Thread Papolu, Appajee
Hi Gopala,

All the needed info is in the link Jarl had posted earlier:

http://developer.bmc.com/jiveProd/entry!default.jspa?categoryID=528exte
rnalID=22fromSearchPage=true

Beginning with the versions in the following table, the Report
Creator plug-in will check for the existence of this configuration item
and if configured, use the designated private queue for its loopback API
calls. ... All other proprietary and third party loopback plug-ins that
don't have special queue requirements should also use this queue.

So the issue lies with the individual plug-in (that loops back to the
Server) implementation in that it talks to the server using the private
queue. So to solve this problem, your plug-in code must issue .NET AR
API calls thru the private queue. So simply add the following line right
after you instantiate login using BMC.ARSystem.Server object but
before issuing any API calls ...

Server server = new Server();

Server.Login( ... );

server.SetServerPort(0 /* or the TCPPort value */, 390693 /* Your
private queue */);

/* ... rest of your API calls */

Regards

Appajee

ITSM 7 assigment email. Where is the URL link in email body set?

2007-09-12 Thread Ray T.
Hi all,
I need to change the ARS server name that's embedded in the direct access
URL that appears at the top of email body sent to members of a support group
notifying them of Incident assigment to the group.

The message on SYS:Notification Messages form (ID 4), does not include
this URL. What code is adding the direct access URL that's slapped at the
top of the email body...or where are the parameters for this URL set? Can't
find it anywhere in the config screens.

TIA.

Michael,

I had raised this as a ticket to Remedy Support and they recognized it as a
software bug. I do not recall the bug number. I tried to find that E-mail
but can't seem to locate it.

An interesting thing I had found about a particular ticket that had NULL
entry ID's in the email notification was the result of this query.. Incident
with Entry ID INC0013 had a NULL Web_Incident_ID, while it did get
an Incident Number INC0059. I didn't get a chance to get to the
bottom of this problem, but it could be that the Web_Incident_ID is pushed
to the notification form to send out the notification resulting in a null
eid.

I ended up wrapping it in a script so that there are no parameters.
armonitor seems to start and stop the java plugin daemon without a

included with the plugin server.

Try breaking the criteria by use of more brackets...

NOT('sAMAccountName' LIKE (% + $))

PS: Is this a Vendor form? Or is this a Regular form? If I recall right, the
LIKE operation has problems with Vendor forms created from the LDAP ARDBC

Re: Push field sometimes happens and sometimes doesn't

2007-09-12 Thread Joe D'Souza
The questions about timeouts and entries on the other table that I asked was
to check if it might be an indexing issue, where there might have been some
sort of search on that table before the push fields causing a table scan..
With 30 entries that should not be an issue..

The filter may fire twice if it is on submit and a part of a Filter Guide
that is called on Submit.. So it could fire on the execution order of the
filter on Submit, and then again when the Filter guide is called in which
this filter is a part of.

Check that..

First of all, Thanks, Mike, for the info on Linux servers. We just switched
from Unix to Linux. Hope we haven't made a big mistake.

Joe,

When it doesn't get updated, does the filter log
show that the filter had fired to perform the push??

Yes, the filter log shows it pushing to the other form whether the other
form gets updated or not.

Do you ever get ARERR 93 timeout errors during these
   operations?

No, no timeout errors, or errors of any kind.

What is the record count of the form into which you
   are performing these push actions?

30 entries

What is the Push Field If criteria?

 'PIQ ID' = $Other Call no$

PIQ ID is the renamed Entry ID field #1. Workflow does show Other Call
no getting set correctly. And the Push Fields is set to display No Match
error if it can't find the record, and we are not getting any error message.

Earlier I reported that the SQL updates are happening twice. The filter log
shows that the filter itself sometimes fires twice and sometimes once. The
filter is firing on Submit, so why would it fire twice? Contrary to what I
reported yesterday, firing once or twice doesn't seem to have any affect on
whether or not the record gets updated.

Thanks,
Dwayne

   Hi Dwayne,

It seems to me that if the SQL routine you specified
was executing twice, it should impact performance
   but not the actual data.

But I can see you are running a Linux server. I
have worked with several companies experiencing
weird Linux problems. About a year ago BMC put a
special support swat team into place to address
Linux issues. I would recommend you putting a call
into BMC Remedy support and having the issue
   escalated to them.

   Hello Everyone,

We have a push fields action to a diary form. The
same filter is pushing from the same form in all
cases. Most of the time it works, but sometimes the
field does not get updated. The filter log is
identical in both cases, and it clearly shows the
   push taking place.

Both when it work and when it doesn't sql log shows
   these actions:

SELECT C536870931 [the field getting updated] FROM
   T580 WHERE C1 = 'PIQ00083'
   UPDATE T580 SET C536870931 = EMPTY_CLOB() WHERE C1 =
   'PIQ00083'
   SELECT C536870931 FROM T580 WHERE C1 = 'PIQ00083'
   FOR UPDATE
Set LOB into the above row ...

But in the cases where the update fails, the sql log
   shows this routine happening twice.

What would make the routine happen twice? Could
second routine be overwriting the first? And what
can I do to stop it?

How you you guys analyze ITSM 7 code? Dev Plus? Master AR Suite? No logging doesn't count.

2007-09-12 Thread Rabi Tripathi
Hi all,
Apart from the BMC Remedy IT Service Management 7.0
Architecture pdf book on BMC's support site, what do
you guys use to analyze ITSM workflow to understand
and customize it?

I have done/tried the following:
1. Workflow Logging - always works, but very tedious.
takes time to create test cases and go thru the log
and cross ref objects in Remedy Admin. It's my distant
friend that I mostly invite only for troubleshooting,
not understaning a big chunk of workflow.

2. Browse Remedy Admin - tedious, not to mention it
pushes me closer to a doc visit for carpel tunnel
syndrom. i never liked Remedy's point and click
boast. I would rather write code in sentences so that
in one glace I could easily understand a chunk of
workflow. Try understanding what 10 filters do. How do
you like the point and click in Remedy Admin this
time?

For me, Remedy's strength is the macro programming it
allows, not the point and click way of doing it. It
sounds good only to the VP who is too lazy busy move
his hand to the keyboard and assumes that this
excellent trait flows down his chain of command. He's
got the purse, so, you've got a whole lot of
clickityclick click click to do in your life...

3. Master ARSuite - whoever decided to kill this
product, i would like to confront loudly one day. He
better have an earplug. I have been able to use it
with mixed results for some of the custom apps written
locally in ARS 7.

Trying to use it for ITSM 7, I can't even get a def
file created thru Remedy Admin. Exporting 40 forms
causes malloc error on server. Is this typical, or is
my server good for nothing bum I sometimes think it
is? Currently trying the export in something like 20
separate chunks. Not done yet.

Anybody able to do a def file of ITSM 7 in bigger
chunks? After the def file, i wonder how upset Master
AR Suite will be on meeting this new def (I already
know I need to strip the new header line about char
set). And after I do some customization, it's another
round of fun with def file export. Why ca't I use a
true IDE like the ones others had in 90s or even 80s?
Yeah, tell me it's coming. I have to see it.

4. Remedy developer plus. I was able to get this to
work with Rem admin 6.0.1 only. But loading objects
(only Incidet Management) didn't finish in 2 hours (I
got 2 GB on my client pc), so I killed it. Is this my
unlucky day, so I should't buy NY lottery today or is
it like this for you guys too?

5. I dearly miss that simple and sweet free command
line utility...what was it called...arexport I think
that gave you object details in readable format. I
can't even remember it's name. I told you this was a
very old friend. I wish it were still around. Rest in
peace, my friend. Your life was a worthy one.

Do you guys know of any other book, white paper from
BMC. With actual object names, their definitions? Any
luck with Master AR Suite or Rem Dev Plus?

If anybody wants to tell me about their superior
product xyz that is THE BEST out there and would allow
such analysis, that I should have already paid for
sparing me this long rant...please keep it short, and
mention the price. A trial version?

ITSM has turned into a monstrous beast never before
sighted in this part of the world. Do we have enough
ropes and shackles to tame this beast? Or is it going
the natural way of the marvelous dinosaurs, too hefty
for their own good? Hope not.

Re: Atrium integration engine(AIE)

2007-09-12 Thread Joe D'Souza
Cause the Lord said no!

Sorry couldn't help saying that..

Is it on UNIX or on Windows? It may be possible to change it on UNIX after
the install by modifying all related paths in the applications configuration
files. I am not familiar with AIE to name all these files, but you could
start with the regular ones like ar.conf and armonitor.conf and see if you
see any references there.

Internally in the database there may be an AIE applications settings form
(just like EIE has one) that contains this path too.

On Windows you'll have to be more careful as there might be registry entries
with the path that you would have to look for and modify..

Cheers

Joe

2007-09-12 Thread Rick Cook
Rabi, I have had success using the Sync Search Database to lead me through
some of the related items in ITSM 7. Unfortunately, log files are about the
only other thing that's been educational. I'm sure that there is a utility
or two out there that can help - too bad BMC can't seem to provide any of
their own that are better than stuff we had years ago.

Maybe with the new Admin tool coming out, they'll have the ability to give
us some functionality that the current tool won't support. I wait with
fingers crossed.

If you create an issue with support about the malloc when exporting 40
forms, you prpbably got the answer: As designes, I'll create an RFE
for you if you want

Yes, ITSM and workflow is not easy. Tried to add two more attachment

gotten away from its original premise--Rapid Application Development
that can be done by non-Software Engineers. Now BMC is using its

Have you looked at ARInside? Free utility to create html documentation.

I think that ITSM 7 was purposefully designed this way, you know,
security through obscurity? If they make it so complicated that no one
will dare go near it, then the don't have as many support calls from
 people breaking it.

Plus, this works well for the consultants, who are very well trained
and
tailored specifically for ITSM, unlike a lot of the full-timers who
have
other things than ITSM to worry about.

I've not really gotten to look at ITSM, but just by reading the buzz
on
the list, it sounds like they really did a spectacular job at building
a
bird's nest. I wonder how they were able to make it so complicated and
get it to work (sort of)?

I'm sure that one of these days, I'll most likely have the privilege
(!)
of working with ITSM. I just hope that by then someone would have made
an ITSM 7 for Dummies book!

Some consulting company out there really should do that, but that
might
end up costing them some business.

Yes, Abydos is a good tool - I only question whether the number of objects
that it has to connect in ITSM 7 would make any output unreadable - like the
CMDB CDM chart/poster/billboard.

I mean, once you get it in small enough pieces to read easily, they're
without the necessary context to make it understandable.

Does anyone know what constitutes a DSO update transfer

2007-09-12 Thread Hyslop, Bruce
I'm having a tough time with a DSO application we support that does a
chained distributed transfer. In this process I transfer from one form
to another with the Immediately Update option set. When the form I
transfer to gets updated it does 158 Set Fields which I believe queues
up 158 distributed update transfers (I see this in my logs but don't
believe my eyes). When 158 transfers get queued it causes not only a DSO
bottleneck but causes extra filter processing on the originating form.
I'm thinking of getting rid of the Update Immediately option and
controlling when updates get sent myself.

Re: 5.1.2 install problems

2007-09-12 Thread Joe D'Souza
Did you try running the 'upgrade' option after you set up the blank database
on SQL2K5? Your ARS Server is perhaps assuming that it is still connecting
to SQL 2K and looking for that system table sysxlogins. This table name must
be different for SQL2K5.. Running an upgrade might resolve this issue.

Cheers

I'm now part of the way there

I've installed the SQL 2K clients onto the relevant machine, and its got a
step or two further.

However, we only have three SQL servers currently available - a SQL2K box
for running our live ARS 5.1.2. 2x SQL2K5 boxes for running our live/dev
ARS 7 install.

The idea was to install ARS 5.1.2 onto a vmware session on our ARS 7 dev
box, and connect it to the SQL2K5 server. I had setup a relevant (blank)
database on SQL2K5, set the compatibility level, but ARS 5.1.2 displays a
Error Invlaid object name 'sysxlogins'.

So what I'll have to do is install the 5.1.2 dev environment onto the
5.1.2 live database, take a backup. Restore that to the SQL2K5 dev system,
and re-install, or something along those lines?

Re: Instance ID

2007-09-12 Thread John Sundberg
We (Kinetic Data) reported this problem a couple years back. We like to use
the GUID as a web parameter -- URLs generally don't like special characters.

We do not use/have CMDB -- so this is a raw ARS issue.

The docs say that a GUID is:* (from BMC Dev Network -- which is pretty nice
BTW)*

*Structure of GUID: *

This 30-character identifier is composed of the following:

   - 2-character prefix, padded with underscore if necessary
(default prefix is ID if no prefix is supplied)
   - 12-character server MAC address, or hostname truncated or padded
with zeros on the left as necessary
   - 6-character datetime (seconds, hex, since start of 1 Jan 1970)
   - 6-character clock ticks (hex, since start of server, with rollover)
   - 4-character counter

So - no mention of non-alpha chars in the definition.
In fact - they specify HEX as the character clock ticks. (see my GUID below)

We reported the issue -- to the previous ARS Product Manager - he agreed it
was a bug.

It was fixed in the sense that they changed the [ to a # -- which equally
sucks - for our needs.

In fact - just ran into a bad GUID today.
6.03.00 patch 20 Windows

Here is my GUID -- KR00D0B7A9C485quzmRgU2#IlA#74B (YUP 2 # signs)

KR -- 2-character prefix, padded with underscore if necessary
00D0B7A9C485 - 12-character server MAC address
quzmRg - 6-character datetime
U2#IlA - 6-character clock ticks
#74B - 4-character counter

So - a pesky bug -- in my opinion.
And a hassle to deal with. Meaning - you probably have historic data with
bad GUIDs -- so a patched server (with GUID fix) -- may not generate new bad
GUIDs - but you still have the historical data to deal with.

As an FYI -- one strategy we did was to replace # with X.

 Hi Arlist,

I have ARS 6.03 installed on SQL 2000. Some of the instance Id's produced
by Remedy inclueds characters like '[' (ex: SH00110A5FEA769fTbRgY[X4QgbTsG)
which are unable to be resolved by SQL 2000. Please let me know if i can
restrict the system to generate instance ID independent of '[' character, if
not is their a way in which SQL 2000 can read this data.

I wouldn't say that we're a dying breed as much as we're being pushed to

What is really bad about this is that ITSM 7 is not that great of a
product and has destroyed a lot of good will that has been built up by
people used to homegrown and third party ARS applications.

There was another comment below about how BMC intentionally made ITSM 7
into a pile of spaghetti code in order to drum up professional services
work. The problem with that logic is that the professional services
folks at BMC are just as lost as the rest of us are when it comes to
this product. I seriously doubt there is a single individual on the
planet that completely understands all of ITSM in detail.

After all the really bad attention implementing ITSM 7 has created for
my team, I am going to start some public relations type of meetings
with all the I.T. management and some of the business users to show them
ARS and the benefits of using it to develop applications in house over
building them in Java or .NET. I'd like to refocus the attention from
ITSM maintenance to ARS development, and hope that the decision is made
to go back to using homegrown incident and change applications in time.

2007-09-12 Thread john rosquist
Sad :-)) I have spend 4 long months with ITSM 7. I have succeeded in becoming
a good configurator -- even CMDB knowledgable. Once unpon a time, I was a
remedy developer, and before that a software engineer. Now, ...

Sync works reasonable well, but will take a while to return. Logging will
work, if you can limit the scope. I do not think it is practical to try and eat
the elephant, I mean , learn ITSM 7, in one whole swoop. You need to learn the
various facets that will impact your fielding of the product. For example, the
notification system as it applies to incident. it is 10 or so forms and a whole
bunch of workflow, but at least it is possible.

IMO dev is useless. MARS is much better, but mostly a dead product. It seems
that time is what it takes to crack it. Tools are helpful, but alone they will
not tell you what you need to know to use the product. There is no silver
bullet. Stop looking for one and take the time to learn the product
systematically.

I predict that Performace will eventually kill ITSM 7. It is slugish running
on a 64bit 8gb, 8 way apps server with a 64 bit, 8gb ram 8 way sql server 2005
backend. Oh yea, it is 95% OOTB. Any performace advice?

Venturing another observation, ITSM 7 (aspects) is very much based on old
techniques. Who uses pagers anymore, so why base the bulk of your notification
engine on a pager interface or the notifier tool! Agh. Ok so much for the rant..

I think that ITSM 7 was purposefully designed this way, you know,
security through obscurity? If they make it so complicated that no one
will dare go near it, then the don't have as many support calls from
 people breaking it.

Plus, this works well for the consultants, who are very well trained

tailored specifically for ITSM, unlike a lot of the full-timers who
have
other things than ITSM to worry about.

I've not really gotten to look at ITSM, but just by reading the buzz
on
the list, it sounds like they really did a spectacular job at building
a
bird's nest. I wonder how they were able to make it so complicated and
get it to work (sort of)?

I'm sure that one of these days, I'll most likely have the privilege

of working with ITSM. I just hope that by then someone would have made
an ITSM 7 for Dummies book!

Some consulting company out there really should do that, but that
might
end up costing them some business.

causes emails to be sent in duplicates or sometimes in triplicates. I knew it

An event triggers an email, which spawns two AR System Email Messages entries

why the workflow happens twice.

Unfortunately, this has nothing to do with why the pushed values aren't showing

causing a table scan.. With 30 entries that should
   not be an issue..

The filter may fire twice if it is on submit and a
part of a Filter Guide that is called on Submit.. So
it could fire on the execution order of the filter
on Submit, and then again when the Filter guide is
called in which this filter is a part of.

First of all, Thanks, Mike, for the info on Linux
servers. We just switched from Unix to Linux. Hope
we haven't made a big mistake.

   Joe,

When it doesn't get updated, does the filter log
show that the filter had fired to perform the
   push??

Yes, the filter log shows it pushing to the other
form whether the other form gets updated or not.

Do you ever get ARERR 93 timeout errors during
   these
  operations?

No, no timeout errors, or errors of any kind.

What is the record count of the form into which
   you
  are performing these push actions?

   30 entries

What is the Push Field If criteria?

'PIQ ID' = $Other Call no$

PIQ ID is the renamed Entry ID field #1. Workflow
does show Other Call no getting set correctly.
And the Push Fields is set to display No Match
error if it can't find the record, and we are not
   getting any error message.

Earlier I reported that the SQL updates are
happening twice. The filter log shows that the
filter itself sometimes fires twice and sometimes
once. The filter is firing on Submit, so why would
it fire twice? Contrary to what I reported
yesterday, firing once or twice doesn't seem to have
any affect on whether or not the record gets
   updated.

Dwayne,

Just a few guesses... ( It is very hard to tell without seeing all of the logs.)

Well.. it actually could have something to do with it.

What if... the ARS server is holding on to the old results of this SQL:
SELECT C536870931 [the field getting updated] FROM T580 WHERE C1 = 'PIQ00083'

And using it from the first time around rather than the second time?

Basically if the select is done to return the whole blob, and then the
whole blob is re-written every time, then if the first copy of the
blob is used during the second trip through the workflow the final
data would look like the first pass through the workflow never
happened. However that would be a real bug that BMC would have to fix.

Another possibility might be that you have a filter phasing issue
where the second push is not seeing the changes from the first push.
(Assuming your updating a record in your diary form.) If that is the
case try to set the filter that is doing the push to be non-phased and
see if that fixes the issue.

This is interesting..

Have you tried regenerating the instance ID instead of replacing a bad
character with X?

Maybe you could put the creation of an instance ID in a guide, and exit the
guide only when the instance ID created contains none of the bad
characters.. It may mean that the guide would loop a few times sometimes
causing a few seconds delay randomly to complete the action but at least you
would end up with a clean instance ID generated by the system than an
altered one..

We (Kinetic Data) reported this problem a couple years back. We like to
use the GUID as a web parameter -- URLs generally don't like special
characters.

We do not use/have CMDB -- so this is a raw ARS issue.

The docs say that a GUID is: (from BMC Dev Network -- which is pretty nice
BTW)

  Structure of GUID:

This 30-character identifier is composed of the following:

a.. 2-character prefix, padded with underscore if necessary
(default prefix is ID if no prefix is supplied)
b.. 12-character server MAC address, or hostname truncated or padded
with zeros on the left as necessary
c.. 6-character datetime (seconds, hex, since start of 1 Jan 1970)
d.. 6-character clock ticks (hex, since start of server, with rollover)
e.. 4-character counter

So - no mention of non-alpha chars in the definition.
In fact - they specify HEX as the character clock ticks. (see my GUID
below)

We reported the issue -- to the previous ARS Product Manager - he agreed
it was a bug.

Well.. it actually could have something to do with it.

What if... the ARS server is holding on to the old results of this SQL:
SELECT C536870931 [the field getting updated] FROM T580 WHERE C1 =
'PIQ00083'

An event triggers an email, which spawns two AR System Email Messages

which is why the workflow happens twice.

Unfortunately, this has nothing to do with why the pushed values aren't
showing up.

I wouldn't say that we're a dying breed as much as we're being pushed to
extinction by BMC.

Yeah - we thought of that approach (looping filt guide) however - were
nervous about a never ending loop or hitting the max filter count thing.

Have you tried regenerating the instance ID instead of replacing a bad

Maybe you could put the creation of an instance ID in a guide, and exit
the guide only when the instance ID created contains none of the bad
characters..

The docs say that a GUID is:* (from BMC Dev Network -- which is pretty
 nice BTW)*

 *Structure of GUID: *

This 30-character identifier is composed of the following:

- 2-character prefix, padded with underscore if necessary
(default prefix is ID if no prefix is supplied)
- 12-character server MAC address, or hostname truncated or padded
with zeros on the left as necessary
- 6-character datetime (seconds, hex, since start of 1 Jan 1970)
- 6-character clock ticks (hex, since start of server, with
rollover)
- 4-character counter

So - no mention of non-alpha chars in the definition.
In fact - they specify HEX as the character clock ticks. (see my GUID
 below)

We reported the issue -- to the previous ARS Product Manager - he agreed
 it was a bug.

Some of the instance Id's
produced by Remedy inclueds characters like '[' (ex:
SH00110A5FEA769fTbRgY[X4QgbTsG ) which are unable to be resolved by SQL
2000. Please let me know if i can restrict the system to generate instance
ID independent of '[' character, if not is their a way in which SQL 2000 can
  read this data.

  Awaiting a speedy reply,

Re: How you you guys analyze ITSM 7 code? Dev Plus? Master AR Suite? No logging doesn't count.

2007-09-12 Thread strauss
random speculation It seems like some of the Windows-based Remedy ARS
folks are honing their .NET skills, which will help them if their
organizations move from Remedy to Microsoft System Center Service
Manager once it becomes a mature piece of their System Center suite. I
suspect that a lot of IT managers will take a serious look at the cost
comparison in a couple of years, once all of the System Center (2007/8
versions of SMS 2003, etc.) are well established in their
infrastructures; I know ours will. At that point, the BMC push to
packaged apps over custom (or reasonably customizable) apps may begin to
hurt them, as comparable packaged solutions with local extensibility
begin to compete at lower price points. ARS admins will have been
reduced to tiptoeing around the fringe of the dark (and dangerous)
bowels of ITSM, and be less able to deliver the kind of deep adaptations
to our environments that were the strength of the platform in the past.
/random speculation

On a more serious note, I would do almost anything to get my hands on an
honest-to-gosh, working version of MasterARSuite for ARS 7.1, even if
all they did was update the old one to recognize the new definitions and
programming features. It was by far the best diagnostic and
troubleshooting tool I ever had, and made it much easier to judge the
implications of any proposed customizations - which today are more of a
trial, error, log, fix, and try again process. And that is just
nibbling around the fringes of ITSM 7.

P.S. No tarring or feathering, please - I'm just speculating since this
thread has degenerated enough to leave us writhing in ancient
petroleum-based substances.

Re: CMDB Question

2007-09-12 Thread Carey Matthew Black
Rami,

I think the answer is very similar to the answers to:

Why is it useful to program in a language that allows you to create
Classes and Sub Classes?

IMO, almost identical OO (Object Oriented) answers apply. The only
difference is that the CMDB is really just a data model and not a full
Object. Although some might argue that the federation concepts
(features of an Atrium CMDB class) might constitute methods of that
class. So, some might have a more OO'ed view of the Atrium CMDB than
just a data model.

HTH.

OT: JDBC ARDBC Plugin

2007-09-12 Thread John Baker
Hello,

We (I personally) wrote most of a AR-JDBC plugin once upon a time. But I
quickly concluded that the job had a high maintenance factor (as the specs
change). We therefore took a different view and implemented an AR to SQL
translator into XML Gateway query requests. Look at this:

query type=sql
  templatesampleARSQL/template
  searchessearch
servermyarsqlserver/server
selectGroup List, Full Name/select
fromUser/from
whereLogin Name = 'xmlgwtest'/where
  /search/searches
/query

You'll note that I am referring to the User form and field names. Of course,
these do not exist in the database as it uses T tables and C columns. The XML
Gateway translates these declarations into SQL using T tables, C columns
(etc.) and executes the SQL directly against the ARS database using JDBC.

Therefore, all a user needs to do is put the correct JDBC driver into the
gateway, tell it how to connect directly (using the JDBC driver) and execute
the above XML query.

The result is rapid access to ARS data because going via the XML Gateway
JDBC is hundreds of times faster than via ARS server/ARAPI.
