Re: Populating the BMC_Person

2012-04-10 Thread Peter Romain
Strange, then, that the latest data in the auto-impact feature doesn't
include the person class.

The software license management engine has out-of-the-box license types that
use the person CI's to help calculate license compliance - this is why I
understood that the person CI's were being created.

It is for impact analysis. Only relationships can be used for this therefor
the person who may be impacted has to be related to a CI that may be
impacted. This cannot be done through associations.

I have seen inconsistencies and errors in the workflow to generate the
Person CI in 7.6 (not checked in 7.6.03, 04) where some Person CIs were
doubled or not there.

Hi all,

I have noticed now in 7.6.04 (maybe it was earlier as well), that when you
add/update someone in the CTM:People form, it is adding them to the CMDB as
well. Is there a reason that this form is being populated?

Right now we link people to the CI, by using the AST:ComputerSystem form and
going to the People tab. I do not us changing this unless BMC makes us in
the future.

I am just wondering if I can turn off this workflow or if it is needed for
something I am missing or will be needed in the future.

Thanks!

John,

I agree!
Hopefully BMC will do something about this?
Using an object name to control how the system operates is hardly best
practice. Adding a couple of flag fields on filters active links to achieve
this is certainly not going to be difficult for BMC.
I have had to defend Remedy's honour in the past from developers, dba's and

2012-04-10 Thread John Baker
Theo

The use of manipulating strings for instructions has been going on for
years. Look at the Run process action being overloaded with perform
action. Run process has been treated like a script element, which I
would applaud if it meant that workflow could be written with scripts,
ie one could write ten lines of script to run with a form (as they can
do with HP Service Manager).

Any application that's spending time checking strings for `! or trying
to interpret run process strings that may be script instructions, is an
application that's going to consume more memory and run more slowly than
an application that's compiled script into byte code (ie Python/Java).

I can view and work with the macros like this:

* Make a copy of all the Macro files in the Macro folder and place them
into a new working folder.

* Rename the files and add the .xls file extension.

* Open the files in Excel and use the Visual Basic editor to view the

Re: HTML and Plain Text emails

Thanks Mahendra – that idea crossed our minds and we consider it the “nuclear
option”. Something we’d rather not do unless we have to. I think we’d back off
the HTML before doing this.

Hi,
Why you want to set a flag in people form? But if you want to set then create
two types of messages in SYS:NOtification Messages form one in HTML coded and
another plain text. Set filter tags for both and fire these tags in
notification filters depending on people tags set on people form.
In email messages form write a filter for plain text body to set in HTML body
field when incoming message is HTML coded. This can be fired on condition in
run if.

Some of that may depend on the e-mail server being used. Exchange for example
is capable of giving a plaintext version of an e-mail even if it was sent in

My experience has been that Remedy (or something in the chain) takes a stab at
converting the plaintext messages to HTML and tacks the HTML and BODY tags onto
what you put in the notifications form. What I did was just use DIV tags in
the notifications:

DIV
Message content
/DIV

Then I could put any special formatting in the DIV or whatever is within the
DIV.

One catch that I found was that the e-mail engine (or something) was set on
replacing all newlines in the message content with BR tags. So, something like

DIV
Message
Content
/DIV

Which in normal HTML would display on a single line gets translated to

DIV
MessageBR
Content
/DIV

It's a bit annoying and keeps you from formatting your HTML the way you might
normally like (it forces you to have less newlines in your HTML text so that
the message looks right in the e-mail client), but was still workable.

the html tags in their notifications.

The email templates used under AR System Email Templates have the following in

I have noticed now in 7.6.04 (maybe it was earlier as well), that when you
add/update someone in the CTM:People form, it is adding them to the CMDB as
well. Is there a reason that this form is being populated?

Right now we link people to the CI, by using the AST:ComputerSystem form and
going to the People tab. I do not us changing this unless BMC makes us in the

I am just wondering if I can turn off this workflow or if it is needed for
something I am missing or will be needed in the future.

Thanks!

Re: automatically creates a Tickets

2012-04-10 Thread Joe Martin D'Souza

Sagar,

If I understood you right, you need to create multiple tickets from
information that is provided to you in some sort of a file?

Where are you getting that file from? Another system? User input on a flat
file or excel file?

I think in order to better help you, it might help if we know the source
from where your input is coming from, and the possibilities of manipulating
both the format and possibly even the 'transport' of that information..

There is more than one method. ARImport as you mentioned is one. Or you
could create an ARM file for that form, which is a mail template for the
information to be sent, and can be sent as separate emails for each entry..

Then off course there are other integration points such as view forms, web
services, and what not depending on your source. So if you can let us know a
little more about your source, we should be better able to help you..

Sagar,

The Crystal Reports 'Engine' IS NOT installed with the AR System.

When you install the AR User Tool, you have the option of installing the
Crystal Reports 'Viewer' libraries that allow you to open a CR on your
client.

You have to purchase Crystal Reports Engine separately to create reports and
install it separately. This is best done on a reporting database, if your
reporting needs are bulk reporting that could consume a lot of resources..
If reporting need is sporadic, it may not matter that much depending on how
much your DB is powered

You would need to further customize your customized system, to disallow
users from specific groups to not change Status when the DB.Status is closed
using filters. Looks like you might not be familiar with comparing
Transactional values of an entry to the Database entries using Filters. You
need to read up on that and use those concepts to trap users trying to open
tickets that are closed with an error if they do not belong to a particular
group (use 'Application-Confirm-Group' for that instead of comparing
$GROUPS$).

Transferring in-house 6.3 code to a 7.6.04 server

2012-04-10 Thread David M. Clark
Folks,

I am finally in the process of upgrading our 6.03.00 patch 017 implementation
to the latest offered. By upgrade I mean a transfer between old and new
servers, not on the same server. The revs are apparently too far apart to use
Migrator to transfer code between, so I will be using a 7.1 server as an
intermediate transfer point. Migrator 7.1 from the 6.3 box to the 7.1 box,
then the latest Migrator from the 7.1 box to the 7.6.04 box. I'll also be
using Export/Import tools as needed. Note that no BMC Remedy applications are
involved here, though I will be loading ITSM later. My concern now is only
with in-house developed code created under or compatible with version 6.3.
Solaris and Oracle on both sides.

Anyone ever done this or have any suggestions as to problems that I may
encounter?

Thanks,

-David

2012-04-10 Thread Joe Martin D'Souza
If you do not have any OTB applications, I do not think you got too much to
worry about.

Have you customized any of the core forms? Core workflow? By that I mean forms
like the User, Group, Email Engine forms, etc..

If your answer to this is no, you can go your merry way as you might have in
previous versions..

If you have customized these core forms and workflow, you might want to check
with BMC if they have a hash file for just the core components, so that you can

And then go your merry way with what you want to do with your in house stuff..

I really do not see much you need to put on your watch list except for

**
Folks,

I am finally in the process of upgrading our 6.03.00 patch 017 implementation
to the latest offered. By “upgrade” I mean a transfer between old and new
servers, not on the same server.
I’ll also be
using Export/Import tools as needed. Note that no BMC Remedy applications are
involved here, though I will be loading ITSM later. My concern now is only
with in-house developed code created under or compatible with version 6.3.
Solaris and Oracle on both sides.

Anyone ever done this or have any suggestions as to problems that I may
encounter?

Thanks,

-David

Product Catalog

2012-04-10 Thread KathyMorris
Hi,

In development, we currently have an installed version of the Product
Catalog 7.6.4 on Solaris/Unix. We would like to wipe it clean and start from
scratch. There supposedly is a maintenance tool that runs on the Unix
server that hosts the Remedy system. Not sure where this file/tool is.
Does this tool manage the cleanup? I read thru the Product Catalog DML
docs, however I was unable to figure out how to re-install the product
catalog. We have existing CI's on Dev. What will happen to the CIs in Dev
when I wipe out the current product catalog entries? And how do I
re-associate the new product catalog categorizations to the existing CIs in
Dev? I hope this will not wipe out the people CI's.

I have done an product catalog updates before by importing the data into the
staging PDL tables, however this is different. All the files that I saw on
the EPDs were downloads for updates (Sp1/SP2). How do I reinstall the
product catalog? Are there any things that I need to watch out for? We also
have services / service offering CI's in Dev.

Create a filter to run on the form when Modify

For the Run If Qualification

To stop a group from being able to modify a request where the 'Status'=Closed
((('DB.Status'=Closed) AND ($GROUPS$ LIKE ((%+ Restricted Group)+%)))
AND ($USER$ != AR_ESCALATOR))

To stop everyone but a specific group
((('DB.Status'=Closed) AND (NOT(($GROUPS$ LIKE ((%+ Allowed

To Allow Specific Users
((('DB.Status' = Closed) AND ($USER$ != User1)) AND ($USER$ != User2))
AND ($USER$ != AR_ESCALATOR)

If Action is an Error Message

Note: the ($USER$ != AR_ESCALATOR) is so escalations can still modify
requests if needed.
If you want users to be able to modify Closed requests but not change the
'Status' from Closed add a ('Status' != Closed) to the Run If

 Hi,

As you say this is a customized application, so wether or not it is possible

Maybe there has been produced some documentation for the custom app that
 might be of help?
If not you probably would have to ask the people that made the application.

Missing Active link to manage

2012-04-10 Thread John Atherly
I'm trying to add another button to the Navigation bar on the left side of

link to the button it is not in the drop down list of active links to add.
I have saved the form and active link but I can not get it to show in the
drop down list when you click here to manage active links.

Re: Transferring in-house 6.3 code to a 7.6.04 server

2012-04-10 Thread Kemes, Lisa
Ditto to what Joe said. We moved from 7.1 p7 to 7.6.04 SP2. We simply just
created def files of all of our custom forms and then used RRRCHIVE to move the
data. Something you may want to think about? Then I don't think you would
need to use the interim 7.1 server? Up to you.

We had about 517 forms to move (plus all the workflow). It really wasn't that
bad

Thanks!

If you do not have any OTB applications, I do not think you got too much to
worry about.

Have you customized any of the core forms? Core workflow? By that I mean forms
like the User, Group, Email Engine forms, etc..

If your answer to this is no, you can go your merry way as you might have in
previous versions..

If you have customized these core forms and workflow, you might want to check
with BMC if they have a hash file for just the core components, so that you can
create the overlay layer for those customizations.

And then go your merry way with what you want to do with your in house stuff..

I really do not see much you need to put on your watch list except for

Re: automatically creates a Tickets

2012-04-10 Thread Ben Chernys
You can use Meta-Update for this. With Meta-Update you will not need any
staging forms or merge workflow. With Meta-Update any errors are
automatically logged and the input file records that caused the errors can
be automatically replicated to a different file. Any needed data can be
loaded or set.

With Meta-Update, development savings over staging forms etc. are in the
order of magnitude scale.

Try logging into the database (SQL client) as ARADMIN and run this query..

select count(*) from actlink where name = ‘My active link name’;

Obviously type in your exact name of the active link (case sensitive).

Or try the name in all lower case..
select count(*) from actlink where LOWER(name) = ‘my active link name’;

If you do not get a count of 1, that active link for some reason does not exist
on your server..

Are you sure you attached the active link to the right form??? If not you will
not see it on that list..

Also why don’t you associate the AL to the field directly when you are editing

an AL and then saving and closing it, opening the form its tied to, and then
attaching it from the properties of the field.. That’s sort of like taking a

I'm trying to add another button to the Navigation bar on the left side of
the Incident Console. I created the button and created the active link
that will fire off the button. But when I go in to associate the active
link to the button it is not in the drop down list of active links to add.
I have saved the form and active link but I can not get it to show in the
drop down list when you click here to manage active links.

2012-04-10 Thread Dee
David,

I understand you going to 7.6x on solaris, but maybe you will see issue
like, what we when thru.

We when from 6.3p20 to 7.5.p4 on UNIX with 10g - custom service and change
environment. As Joe pointed, if you have not customized core forms:
user:group, etc.. you should be good but then you may get minor errors
example the user form gave us a box 4 error, which made the installer fail.
Basically delete the view (not the table) that is given the issue.

We did this, copy your production to test, and run the upgrade work thru the
kinks. Blow the test away again, do it again, to smooth out the process and
steps. This way you can work with BMC on the issues.

We found the installer failed many times,..

we did a gradual, installing each component at a time, and work thru the
errors.

Yes I double checked that. But thanks for asking I have done some simple
mistakes before.

It is link to the button on the form. But if you look at the navigation bar
properties there is another place it looks likes you need to link it. I
just tested it and it is working but I'm still wondering while the active link
is not showing up in the manage active link area of the navigation bar. May
the active link fairy connects it during the night.

Are you sure you attached the active link to the right form??? If not you will
not see it on that list..

Also why don’t you associate the AL to the field directly when you are editing
the AL?? I would think that is a easier one step approach rather than creating
an AL and then saving and closing it, opening the form its tied to, and then
attaching it from the properties of the field.. That’s sort of like taking a
world tour to check a local landmark..

No there is no AL listed on the right side. I counted 215 AL if the
Incident Manager Console is the primary form and then counted the AL that
are on the left side with Show available Active Links checked and it is
only showing 126. If I unchecked the Show available Active Links the
count jumps up to 276 AL tied to the form. So I'm guessing I have 61
associated with the form but not as the primary

The link is working even thou no AL is listed in the navigation properties

permission groups that you have created (groups with Group Type View or
Change), or Roles that you have created that your forms have been added to,
those need to be imported or created on the new AR System with the same Group
and Role ID before you import your customizations.. Failing which you will have
issues with permissions..

Java API connection pool question..

2012-04-10 Thread Dee
Hello List,

Senario,

Browser -- Loadbalancer -- 2 http server -- UNIX + Websphere App Server
(MT) -- F/W-- ARSERVER UNIX + DB=Oracle 10g)

This is the first time the ARS is behind firewall. The firewall flushes
connection on each session every hour.
Midtier configuration session timeout is set to 60 min.

We see slow/long logins and 'out of state session in the firewall.

So if the Connections to arserver are from the Java API connection pool,

- How can the connection pool be managed?
- If the keepalive protocol is enabled, will this keep session to database
open?
- If the connection pool is has stale connection, how can they flushed
immediately such that less time to create new session?
- if the unix default keepalive 2 hour variable is changed to 1hour, how
does this impact the Java API connection pool.

Basically, how can we either keep the session alive across a f/w that
flushes sessions every hour?
or Manage the pool to flush stale connections very quickly, such that
establishing another session (login) is in seconds rather than minutes?

2012-04-10 Thread Susan Palmer
We did an upgrade (mis-nomer) last year. After 3 months of trying to
upgrade we ended up just creating new servers and export/importing
objects. The biggest gotcha we ran into was when you import forms to the
new database it changes the form ID (T236 became T450). Any sql statements
included in workflow needed to be updated and external programs needed to
be updated.

There were other things and if you take the time to search archives I
described them pretty extensively.

Good luck!!

Re: Caught exception :invalid operand to in

2012-04-10 Thread gok's
This error will occur when one of the columns in the table field has a NULL
header.
Edit the field properties for the table field. On the Table / Tree property
tab, find the null column title and add some text for the column title.
Another option is to hide the column that has a null header. This can be
done by editting the field properties for the column and clicking on the
Hidden box to hide the column.

This is expected behavior since the parent window must have been closed
first. Correct procedure is to close Midtier dialog first then the Browse
dialog.

You may need to re-position the Midtier dialog, in order to close it first
i.e. bring the Midtier dialog to foreground close it then close the
Browser dialog

Also, the timing of Browser dialog box cannot be controlled. Thus, you may
find their appearances to be over-lapping.

Re: Transferring in-house 6.3 code to a 7.6.04 server

2012-04-10 Thread Joe Martin D'Souza

A very useful tip:

Many of you may know this.. If you MUST write a Direct SQL, you NEVER should
write SQL directly to T tables.. Instead write them against the view name.. for
eg if you wanted to write one for the HPD:HelpDesk form whose table is lets say
T654 do not write it to T654.. Describe HPD_HelpDesk and write it to that..
Then the upgrade would be seamless as the view name never changes..

You may want to consider a project where if you have Direct SQL’s to the T
tables, convert them to address the view names..
